The main character ...vampirewise, has to be believable. I love a character to have a sense of humor, or a dark sultry side. But all the fades away or turns into a bat is ridiculous

The Main Character should be dark but, confident with themselves and comfortable around mortals (those who are comfortable around their prey get fed more often). It would be nice if there was a little Angst too.

As for the time period...hmm...Mix of Past and Present

I like the character to be realistic.. not some ultra-specialized character that is a lawyer by day, vampire hunter by night whom can also use magic crap.

I like vampire novels whose main character may not necessarily be human, but is the less powerful of the two and is tempted. Does this character stand true, or does he/she give into temptation? What are the motivations for this choice?

I love underdog survival type stories. It makes me feel like I have a chance in this life. It also shows how their lives change from contact with the stronger character.

As to timing, I like modern age.. deffinatly after WWII on timing.

The main character should be strong, beautiful (male or female), ruthless, and have an actual role in life, not just run around chomping on necks and stupid stuff. I love Anne Rice. Her vampires (although not very realistic) are always so hot.

The characters have to be believable, preferably as well shaped as Anne Rice's characters. As mentioned here also, no Vamps turning into Bats and flying away...

I look for something beyond what has yet been given me in my readings. Someone real and believable. I am not a fan of Anne Rice and her characters. Though I must admit they are decently developed, they seem to good to be truly real. I don't want some angst ridden, arrogant, detached vampire who still clings to his mortality. But I also don't want some mindless killer who makes me want to wring his throat with every new sentence.

My favorite time period.. now I've always been obsessed with the Renaissance period or the late seventeen hundreds. So, I suppose either of those would work for me, as well as the present.

I generally look for a different kind of story, something that maybe combines the new with the old, while not becoming too outrageous. I also like strong characters and a good plot. I yearn to find things that haven't been done before and a lot of imagination. I tend to think in pictures so I like to be led down the path and told to enjoy, not shown everything and left with nothing to discover on my own.

The main character in my novel, Sorrow: A Vampire's Tale, struggles through his infancy as a vampire, relying solely on the trust he gives to another vampire.

I've taken aspects of different types of vampire stories to bring live to my vampires, while adding some new touches to their being.

If anyone wants more info, contact me.

I like the carpathian series. the main charachters are normally very strict and start off very non-humorous. but as the book goes on they get more relaxed. personally i would enjoy it being during medieval times with swords and shields.

Well I read a romance fantasy novel called Prince of Twilight and pretty much the main character was Vlad. What made it interesting was a more realistic appoarch to vampires. Even though it was Dracula you still got a feeling he was real and really falling for a mortal human. What made it also cool is that vampires were not evil or cruel but just trying to survive. There was many characters based on history involved and it was interesting. It took place in modern times by the way.

I look for characters that take a realistic look at life. I don't want to read about a vampire that lives forever and does not feel pain or love or is dead... I don't like the dead part cause it looses the realistic feel. I always felt when it comes to books that vampires should be people that have been cursed (not that it is a bad thing or anything). I don't want the whole zombie effect.

Also I love Romance novels with vampires.

I like the vampires to be human like. They have flaws and they have a 3 dimentional character. No completely evil or completely good characters. Perfect example for me is Stuart Townsend's portrayal of Lestat in the Queen of the Damned movie by Anne Rice.

As for the place: Present.

THE MAIN CHARACTER OF A VAMP NOVEL OF COURSE SHOULD BE A VAMPIRE, ELEGANT, CUNNIG, WITTY, BEAUTIFUL, WEALTHY AND BLOOD LOVING CREATURE OF THE DARKNESS.

ABOUT THE TIME LINE, I'M FOND OF VAMPIRES ON OR BEFORE LOUIS IV's TIME... VERY CLASSICAL AND SOPHISTICATED.

The main character for me has to be elegant and present himself in such a manner. He has to be mysterious so that you never know what to expect in the book. I like the idea of a d&d theme, so in a realm where there is magic and dragons...or if it happens to be in a present era, I like the story to be in small places.

With Chaotic Love,
Solea

Lately, I have been finding present day settings more interesting because they gve the reader another facet to relate to -- one that isn't strictly built on the fantasy of that mysterious vampire just trying out survive another day... A character that doenst gush all their emotions at once so they become one-dimenional are always nice...then you alwayw hav something to possibly use to surprise your reader...

The most important attribute of the main character for me is that he or she has to face and overcome a moral dilemma. Something that goes against his or her very being. The timeline doesn't really matter as long as it is well written.

I think any archetype can be made into a good character and good reading so long as they are detailed and we understand the motivation for them, can sympathize or at least empathize with them. Describe them well, and give us a reason to like them and you could write me a story about a vampire on the Best Buy Geek Squad and still pen a winning title...maybe.

I haven't found one special "type" of vampire that I prefer to the rest. I look for a bit of a flaw, something to make them a bit more believable, a way that I can relate to them... I have read so many different novels, seen so many movies... All were basically different, in just about every way. And I have a MASSIVE thing for anything written in medieval times.

I enjoy a vampire character that isn't eat up with angst over their situation. I don't want to spend 1/2 the book looking for why they should accept their "unlife". I read for enjoyment so I actually appreciate a lot of humor in a story along with a bit of mystery and a good battle or two of course. I'm flexable with time periods as I enjoy them all equally including alternate universe types where dragons and magic are commonplace.
I just want a good story with a main character I can feel some interest in and writing interesting enough to take me away from the real world for a bit.

i agree that the main character would have to a be a sexy female, i know it sounds a little perverted but women are far more exciting to read about.
i cant decide about the time as i like the past and intrigued about the future with something new

I favor realism but with a hefty dose of the extraordinary-something that makes it possible but doesn't push my suspension of disbelief. A good mixture of time periods, like a modern day tale with remembrances of the past is always good.

if the main charcter has qualities i can relate to, and makes me "feel"... and, of course, it has to be a readable, perferably enjoyable book. time frame? just about any, as long as the author can pull you in.

Hmmmm, the main character would have to be dark, brooding, seductive, but also be loyal to those he holds close.

I am a big fan of Laurel K Hamilton and Sherrilrn Kenyon. I prefer the Carpthians and Jean Claude over any other charcters so far.

I have also read L A Banks and Kim Harrison. And while they are a good read, they are not exactly a *vampire* novel. Yes, I know, there are characters in each authors books who are vamps, but not the main character.

A vampire novel just has to have strong story line that makes sense. The time of the story doesn't matter that much to me. In the end a vampire is always trying to seduce his or her victim.

What I hope to see in the main charecter of a novel is thier authenticity. I want to feel what the charecter is feeling. I want tobe scared out of mind, and want to laugh out loud when the charecter does. I want the author to make me believe that they are real.
I want to wander if there are really vamps in new orleans. I want the author to make me feel that there are darkhunters prowling the streets or zombies being risen in graveyards.
I want my charecters to have real feelings, real moral dilemmas, and a real sense of humor. So long as my main charecters are real to me I will continue to read about them.

A vampire novel...i like them to take place in the current time period, that way people don't only think of us as cape wearing...and with frilly shirts, and a funny accent. The 'lead vamp' needs a believable personality, and very unexpected. [sorry for being so vague about the last part.]

The main goal with any main charector is to make them believable and something people can relate to. I'd reccomend if you're going for something not of this time period to make the emotions and experiences of the main charector something that is experienceable in modern day, or described in a way that people can relate to today. In a modern day setting you can have a little more fun as the setting is that much more real to us the charector can be a little less "normal" and have stranger experiences.
Remember at all times that for every superpower, you need a balance.

Things I adore in a charector is seeing how they face their challenges. I can admire thinkers' much the same way as the people who rediculously refuse to accept reality. I can admire an honourable charector for doing what he believes is right as well as a charming bastard who does what he wants.
Make the charector memorable.

none of the silly superstitions (I'm sorry but you drive a stake through any heart and whether they are mortal or immortal they would die)
moody side
hate their existance

as for time well a time line from immortal birth to present

For me...i wouldnt mind either male or female....but it would have to describe their history (what it was like as a human and what its like as a vampire) personlity (whether they've changed much since they were made), what they do with their time, how they spend it...things that go on in their lives....etc etc...time frame...doesnt really bother me...i do like olden times from say Gergorian, tutor, elizabethian, Victorian time...like say 1500 to present times! But im completely glued to darren shan novels & Ann Rice .... their my vamp novelists/authors!!!

I've always prefered the medieval or renaissance period, though recently I read a book which really opened my eyes for the present as well... You might have heard of it, "Live girls" by Ray Garton... It was so much different from the vampire books I'm used to, so sexual, raw and violent... Nothing like Anne Rice's romantic atmospheres.

So after reading that, I am really open to any kind of vampire story. As for the main character... I look for a depth in them, something that's captivating or something myserious that you just can't figure out... A haunted past perhaps. I also want him or her to be believable and have a sense of humanity in them, I'm not really into the pure evil without a soul thing.

I don't have a favorite time period; I just like to read vampire novels.

Heck, I don't even have a specific main character I go for. There are so many good ones. I mean, before it turned to pure porn, the Anita Blake series was really good; I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Sonja Blue collection by Nancy C Collins.

The Vampire Geneveive from the Warhammer world is a good read.

The World on Blood is an interesting take on vampires that I think EVERYONE should read.

Oh, MaryJanice Davidson is HILARIOUS.

Charlaine Harris is a GREAT author...

Get my point? I like to read and I refuse to limit myself, LOL!

I like the main character to be conflicted within the plot of the story. Having to build upto a hard decision, as well as finding themselves throughout the journey.
There has to be a mysteriousness, that they are misunderstood and keep to themselves in a way, don't open up. Either a good character or an evil one. I guess you have to feel for the character there has to be some pain and loss involved.

For a time period, I like the current, it's much easier to relate to. To make it more interesting, I like it when characters have flashbacks to to the past.
