i have been wondering tis for awhile now..what power does the name give to us? or is just that a name ..plz tell me what u think...
Kamara,
All names have power, since they provide a shared meaning of incidence in reality.
But what do you think about this please?
true they can hold some power..but is really power stabb or what we think is power of the name?
Kamara,
By cognitive recognition of a concept of any 'thing', by the association which we place upon its shared ideal representation, we subject our minds to acceptance of a defined notion of said 'thing', which provides others the ability to affect our psyche by using its descriptive name in communication with us, in order to bring about the required reactive effect.
So yes, the title of 'Vampire', when used as a name to describe the attitude and demeanor, or way of life for someone, contains power in how it affects the other to whom we are using this descriptor.
Knowing how that other will react to this, provides the means of exercising manipulation of the other through that use of the name, hence it's power is apparent, but invariably unique to each individual who uses and hears it.
in olden days a name meant so much but i dont believe this is so today.
I agree with STABB. A name in and of itself has little power, unless power is inffered upon it.
I would like to say however, that we need to make the distinction between "hollywood" and real Vampires. Having the name Lestat or Marius does not give you anymore power than having the name Jenn or John, unless of course you are using it for manipulation purposes.
The name to add to STABB, for me....RESPECT...the longer you are able to pass teachings, the more respect you earn...and deserve.
My 2 cents
they say that some ones greatest weapon is there name and how well the people know it. so yeah a name is the strongest weapon we have.
I must disagree BLACKOBLIVION, as there are many ways that a name will not give this power. Some of which have been mentioned above.
That said, I think that there is another way that a name can work- by allowing the potential of growth into it. This was part of the reason "great" names are used over and over again in the hopes that the name's power transfers to the child/person it is given to.
Often times there is a learning process and growth required, it depends on the name and the individuals.
Other individuals will change their names to their power names for a short time in affirmation of what they wish to be, how they wish to live. It helps them in their quest of expansion.
Still many deny the parts of their name viewing it as unimportant and trifle.
Jean Paul Sartre often named his characters very carefully if not well, ironically. One just needs to look at the play No Exit to see how these names both add depth and irony to the characters they represent.
In short names of power only contain that which we accept and then actively work on. It is not just the power, but what we assign it that influences us.
through out history certain names have held power and sway, but due to the acts which the name was linked to if you said Richard, most would linc that to the Lionhearted, anymore though, its a name
I feel that names can be abused for power depending on how and why they have been chosen.
I do agree with Stabb though.
I do feel names hold not necessarily power, but energy of some sort. Your sense of identity holds a great deal of your personal energy, and your name is the most basic form of identity, so therefore your name should hold power as well.
Well, that's how the theory goes anyway.
names do hold power. even more today than in the past. in olden tymes, it was believed if you knew something or someones true name, you could have power over them. that is true today. it is even more true of numbers. if i knew your national insurance number, i could use it to find out things about you, or even to change data that is held. to a lesser degree, i can do this with your name. if i knew all your passwords, i could access your accounts, even get to your bank accounts and help myself to your money. words do have real power.
even in the old days, if someone knew your name, they could ask people about you, find things out about you, spread tales about you.
Witches used pseudonyms within the coven so that they could not be betrayed, even under torture.
it has also been widely believed that knowing a name can enable you to cast spells upon that person. knowing the true name of a spirit or demon can enable you to summon and bind it.
this is why in Judaism it is forbidden to use the name of god. to even attempt to hold power over god is blasphemy. try telling that to the joveys.
While I agree that with certain information, people can really mess up your life, I don't believe that your name holds much power, unless YOU believe it holds power.
Perhaps it is different for magical names, but as I'm not involved in magicks, I don't know about that. I have only my given name and I'll share that as needed.
As Stabb said...All names seem to have power.
Though some can debate they only have power if you believe in it. I don't really know for sure.
I do know that almost every name has a meaning. So...vampires have been regarded as mysterious creatures so if you use the term people automatically think of the mythology behind Vampires.
Although it seems to me that everyone is becoming desensitized to the name vampire because so many claim to be one...
your name is who you are and somewhat what you do. just take me name of ex!
In today's society a name can hold some power. Look at the identity teft.
All the protection that is needed is in your name. A name can scare the hell outta the enemy ... a name will be remembered for a very ong time.
Very well stated Stabbb .I also see a name as a reflection as onces inner self being projected outward for the mass to see.
I agree that a name defines who you are. Much like the saying "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." In a way, it is a description. When you hear "frog" you automatically see the image of a frog in your mind, you don't need someone to tell you "the slimy thing that starts out as a tadpole", you just know. A name can tell you many things about a person, especially if it is one they have chosen for themselves.
I believe that once upon a time a name once held power. If you believe that your name has power then perhaps someone can have a hold on you.
But I do pose a question. I have read many references that when your soul is created it is given a name. So would knowing someones soul name have more power over them than their current life name?
I think people's perception of a name is what gives it power. Many consider the name Lolita to be one for a female who has loose morals in the sex department. That is because of a little book and movie with that name.
Okay, and now for my two cents worth...
A name is just that, a name. It holds no power unless you want it to, or unless the someone else wants it to. Now a days, a name is just an identifier for people, and things.
a name only has the power you give it nothing more nothing less.
I think all names are powerful. My reflects where I grew up.
misfitchick - you have hit the nail on the head - but there is one thing you have missed. today, more than ever, we live in a world where information is power. if someone knows your name, they have a portal to information. a name is the very root of information, for once you have identified a person or thing, you are on the first step to having control over it.
most names now a days are just picked because someone liked the name not because it has any meaning at all but funny enough it seems that the name can influence how the person turns out
Well, I'm not entirely sure whether it gives power, but Lirit Le Boursier could also be known as Lioness of Raven's Wings. And the whole name means "A dark one, ancient, who flies free above all others". This makes me feel powerful, but it might not make me be powerful.
A name sometimes hints at the inner self or alter ego .Or some hidden passions or desires or aspirations.Aye, a name can be powerful ,if the energy of the soul is attached to it.For me, several names hold power or passion. Not necessarily only vampire names. Some energies never die, hence perhaps the name linked to that energy holds power still.
all names hold some power liebe. it is on how u view that power. but yes in ways stabb is right.
My Name was given to me by the who calls herself my maker... she saids it holds all my secrect and when some see the name will know them
Not sure exactly what is being asked..is it "does the word vampire give you power" or what? I see calling yourself a vampire gives you a boost of ego. Not like..cocky ego but I mean like..you know it gives you a belonging. It lets you know that you have a place where you feel like u belong. Along with others who are like you.
If someone called you "Vampire Bob," what power do you think you'll get besides laughter. There is always power in words or lack of.
Karnstein -You do have a point, and I admit that I realized that after I had posted. That is very true now a days, but you only give someone power over you through your name if you let them.
I will attempt to quote shakespear on this one forgive me if i don't get the wording exactly right.
"What is in a name would not a rose by any other name still smell as sweet?"
I believe that a name has as much power or respect as one is willing to put into it.
I believe that names do hold power, take "Satan" for example. The Christain faith's biggest blunder is giving evil an name. Humans all have an evil nature as a species, and in true form, instead of living up to the responsibility of doing bad things in life, they decide to claim that evil comes from an outside, corrupting source. By personifying this force and moreso, teaching others to fear this personification, they give evil a hold over them...so yes names can carry power.
A while back names meant a great deal and in some places they still do. but mostly i think names have lost their power in the new world.
I really dont think their is any power in a name unless your going to cast a spell on another person that is why names were powerful but only to the person who was casting a spell on you...today i dont think names mean anything because people has lost the fear of others putting spells on them...
Check the history books. Many warriors gave their weapons names. Even in the LotR. Names have power.
i agree names do hold power...some more than other's...that is y they r given..but y do vampires have names that hold so much power and honor? to me mortal names hold no power within them only my true name does...what do u think about that guy's?

In some cultures people have two names. One that they use in public and then their secret name that is known only to family, a mate and their Gods. To be told their secret name is a great honor.
Sorry the pictures were suposed to be different. The ones displayed are both for Vampire the second one was suposed to have the egg shape in the lower right not the upper right... my appologies.
Any name or title has some power to a point it tells people who or what you are and because of that name everyone knows what it is problem is with vampire it has so many negative meanings for people that most are afraid of it so to a point that is power.
I think that a Vampire's name is his or her Legacy. We may have a birth name, but that is not what our Real Names are. We vampires take pride in our names.
Your name is what you are , it is everything that makes you you . As for the written name , there is power in the written word .
The name does not necessarily define us but by people knowing it makes them believe that they know you... it is how people use that name that gives them power over you... As for Vampire names well they normally will give the other person an idea of the age of life of a Vampire
To be honest, it doesnt really matter what is in a vampires name...a names a name...if a vampire chooses a name that describes him, his personality, history etc...then fair enough but otherwise, they should just stick with the name they were given!?
Are we talking about simply vampire names or names in general as well?
I believe names are one of the most important things a person can possess, not necessarily for the purpose of power but for the self. Your name might not mean anything to others, but to yourself it might mean the whole world.
That's why I find it very important to choose the right name for your child, it's a name it'll grow up with and carry for it's whole life. The history, meaning and thought your parents have put behind your name can have some importance to your personal inner strength. I do believe that in a way, your name might influence on your character development. That's why it's important to me to give my child a name that insipres harmony and peace, since I value that a lot.
When it comes to Vampires, their names have different meanings depending on the person seeing them. Just the word Vampire might awake feelings of respect, fear, admiration or even laughter. Because of how well known vampires are, I believe they have gained some power status. The power of the name behind the vampire might later be increased by how well known the name is, it's history and so on.
At least, those are my thoughts...
I believe a anme is a name...unless or parents named us from something else
some say that if ur given the wrong name, ur not usuing ur full potential. i cant remember when i read that , but there was another thread on the subject.
i dont personally think names are as impt as who u are on the inside.
A name is a name. what you do with it gives it it's power. think about it. if i say "jon" or "tom" you're like...okay, who are they? but if i say "adolf hitler" automatically your mind floods with nazi imagery, am i right?
A subject with interest. What's in a name?
The proper name of a being is related to the hermetic principle of correspondence. Knowing the name of a target is as good as hitting the target in the unseen world.
By the name of another, we grant direction to a spell designed to hurt or to heal. I can direct a spell at a propername with great precision. If I have a picture, all the better.
Knowing the name of the rose gives it meaning, and when this is associated in the unseen realm, it is powerful indeed.
I dont know about power but I think that names are given for a reason. I dont know what reason but a reason.
A name in and of itself has little power, unless power is inffered upon it.
At one time names really meant something, now they are just that, names.
If they really had meaning that means id be the "victorious waterfall" (vickie lynn) like my name says, but alas im not.
Names have always held power. It is the deepest connection to your birth you have
name is that word who can tell something about us,i mean not about everybody but some names connecting us with some persons who we good know, and i think our names must have some special power...but that is just my opinion
I think all names have meaning and power, i've always wondered where my friends names originated from and what they used to mean and stuff.
If you place your power behind your name the name becomes power. Cher , God ,Chanel so on and so on .
true..but i'm talking about vampire names not mortal names..
Every word with a meaning has power, sometimes stronger in what context it's being used
weather or not a name has power is all up to whom uses it and for what purposes. example. my given name is Desare' a french word for desire, to be desired, desired one ect... does not define who i am. my name on this sight resembles who i am inside, but on the out side im quite the opposite...
If you chose your vampyre name i would imagine it would have more power than your 'mortal' name. However, as many have said, all names have power
Like Vampiress Nancy.. as opposed to Vampiress Lunaria!
Or Vampire Fred
as opposed to Vampire Raven
Names sound powerful..
an attractive 'sexy' Name Empowers!!
the ancients belived great power was held over someone just by knowing their name. and the native americian indians belived that to take their picture was to steal a part of their soul. who knows maybe so.
But names can also hold you back, if someone has labelled you as one thing, but you are capable of much more than just that one label, its a category and most beings don't fit into just one
Stabb, I think that is why some cultures allow for a person to choose and change their name as they grow.
Very few of us "hold our names" our entire life, as most of us continue to evolve. So I have always been fond of the idea of shedding one name to take up another for the purpose of new perspective and change.
Does it truly change me, no. But it does allow for other experiences that the old name did not.
Just like in the movie, "IT", when you name something, you give it power. You give it power because you chose to acknowledge it. Names have certain associations with them, whether they be positive or negative, this adds to the power behind a name
I believe that names do have some sense of power, depending on the person/creature who bares the name.
For example, my name is Melanie. Most people say it is a very pretty name BUT unless you are good with the origins of names they would know that Melanie comes from the Greek name "Melania" which means black.
Not such a sweet name anymore, is it? *smirk*
Whether it be ones Vampire name or Witch name, it holds personal power, for it was either appointed or chosen for a reason. Keeping it secret is much better in Witch Craft, because it is used to call upon the Deity which is needed for a particular spell. I assume that a Vampire name can be kept secret for similar purposes.
Names are power, some cultures even remove the gods letters from the alphabet so as not to call him …
by giving something a name we give it an identity and power
what ever power we allow it to have a name can bring about many emotional changes in a person....you hear the name of a loved on and you feel love you hear the name of an enemy and you feel hate what would you feel if there was no names for things?
The power associated with that being … take a kid give him some pirate stuff and a great name and he will have great adventures and do much in his head.
Take a god and bring it forth and depending if it’s nature is destruction or life it will do what it will do.
Names have power associated with them … if I picked up a woman and in the hotel room she said my name is sister tereaser I would know im not going to get lucky and she is good.
If she told me she was the black widow I would feel like running if she hadn’t poisoned me yet as she is bad.
So I guess names cause awareness to their powers, what they are will be down to history and the individual.
Its in essence- like a spell.
When a parent gives birth to a child and names it- on that day they *are* (should be) putting their energy into that child
i guess that could happen..but some of us change our names then what?
It is only my opinion, but a name is just that, a name. As William Shakespeare put it: "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
No matter what name it is given, a rose is still a rose. So it is with all things, so I believe.
♥
An interesting point Beshadowed. Yet it calls to question that if the rose felt that it was not a rose. Would its sweetness or essence change to match its new found name. Could the Rose will itself into a Lilly?
when you are named at birth, it gives you originality, and also, one day, depending on your path of life, it may provide you with power or good fortune.
I think your name has a very powerful meaning... and that is enough, it transfer you some kind of power ... even more if you were named in a special day...
Even more!!! our nick names give us power too... because they come from us and usually represent something important to us...
An interesting thought, boogieman. Can a rose will itself to be a lily? I don't see how. If we call a rose a lily, it still looks and smells like a rose. Such would be the case if a rose calls itself a lily.
A leopard cannot change its spots, as they say.
♥
The NAtive Americans name their children some INCREDIBLE names...
In all the vampires I have encountered ALL have had Magnificent names...
Male and female.
i dont really believe all that, but you should pick up a name book, it'll tell you what people are like. like if you dont know a name for your child
A name is a name and merely a way to differentiate ourselves from one another, isn't it?
To me my name is one with who I am. It denotes who I am and what I am called. It is part of my whole...part of my identity.
names hold a great deal of power but in this time frame very few know how to tap into that power
