Today my husband gave me some very bad news. My chihuahua came up to me and put his paws on my collar bone, looked me in the eyes and started to shake and wimper. I started to think about how he always does this whenever I am upset or crying or mad. How does he know?
Can animals be empaths?

I do think that animals can tell what you are feeling, if you are close enough with them, such as people can. If animals are able to feel a shift in energy moments before an earthquake, no doubt would they feel any negative or positive engery from their owner.

Dogs have a great sense of their owner. Have you ever seen a family dog get very protective of someone in the family that is pregnant? I have, on many occasions. Somehow a dog can sense when a someone in the family is pregnant.

When my father passed on, our cat kept by my side as if protecting me. That day, he slept at my side, having never done that before and cried the day of Daddy's funeral. Don't mistake animals as, well, animals. They have minds and souls and know sorrow and happiness.

I think that once you have had an animal for a while and you become close with that animal, it can pick up on your emotions and actually experience those same emotions. Or, if your pet does nmot experience the same emotions then at least it will be sympathetic to your feelings.

Anyones who's had a pet they consider a family member has a connection with them. Animals bond a lot easier with humans (with the exception of abuse cases and such) and are very very good at reading ppl. It's more then likely you and your pup are connected just because you have a bond. :)

yes, pets can tell what their owner is feeling. it's not much different from a child who can tell when their parent is upset. I'm sure a lot of people will get upset that I related pets to children, but they aren't that different.

I don't think that animals have emotions but they do have a sense for something that has or is about to happen. Examples of this would be sensing earthquakes, but dogs especially do notice when something has happened and emotions are running high.

Animals are smart. I do believe they can sense any emotion you or thier family is feeling and so try to comfort you in their own way.
WHen i was pregnant with my daughter, we had a cat we rescued, we were told she didnt like kids and was very shy.. Well when we took her out of her kennel the firs tthing she did was lay on my belly.. and she did that the whole pregnancy.. and after My daughter was born, she wante dmore to do with the baby then with me. But she was great. I was on bed rest for almost 5 months, i could not take showers. So when i took my bath, she would sit on the side of the tub or on my belly and wehn it was time to get up she would run to get my husband to help meout.. lol

my dogs too were great... Before i found out i was pregnant with my son ( we had been trying for almost 4 years) my Huskey knew.. She would constantly lay her head on my belly and nuzzle it and she would also follow me all over and not let me out of her sight.
After My son was born it was the same only when he would cry, she would have to be there and make sure hewas ok. a few times she would try to bring him a bottle or a blanket..

I believe animals can sense our emotions very much so. I have been around animals since I was born, even wild ones, such as deer, birds, raccoons, possums, etc., can sense what you are feeling and for the most part what your intentions are.

I used to have a 21-point buck who would come and eat with me sitting about 5 feet away from him. I would give him food. he would eat and leave. He sensed I didn't want to hurt him and also my somewhat fear of him.

My cat sensed I was pregnant when I first came back to Ohio. She knew the baby was in there before anyone in my family, other than my mom, sister, nephew, and a couple of others. But she is nicer to me and more easy around me, careful not to trip me or anything. The same cat knew my dad was dying the morning he passed. She kept him company as he died and my mom found her with him when she came home. The cat knows when I am depressed or happy... she even watches over me when I am overly-depressed.

I am a firm believer of animal empathy!

Animals are intelligent in that they sense body language, emotions, and tone of voice. You can say any words you want to a dog, but if you do it in a tone of voice that keeps them calm, it really doesn't matter what you say. Eventually they do learn repetitive sounds as cues... but mostly they respond to tone.

yes, especially if you've owned the animal for sometime. they pick up on your neuances. if you feel good your more likely to be playful with the pet. if you feel bad, they sense it and most tend to leave you alone, figuring you'll be playful with them again when you feel better.

Animals can read their Master's like a book. You cry, they are in tune with that emotion. You get mad, they hide..again in tune. You are happy, their tail will wag, again in tune. No-one can convince me that pets are not empathic. Now wild animals, well that is a different story and no, I do not believe they can be.

Another thing my animals do is sense good or bad people and protect from from those they have deemed unsafe.
My rotti and german shepard/boxer will kill someone before they get near me. They are always watching out our windows and letting me know what is going on outside. My chihuahua growls at people who come near me as well. They are extra protective if I am outside or in bed. They will watch me from any wondow in our house when I am outside and they are not.
I can honestly say I feel sorry for anyone who tries to break in to my house.

We sometimes forget that we are animals.
Is it unusual for animals to love us?
Or is it just because we give them food.
I believe that there is no better friend then an animal......and no one can convince me otherwise.

I myself am and cat person and i always have been. I always raise them from birth if i can and they are very well behaved and the bond it tight when i do this. They can definitely tell how i am feeling and they know enough to leave me alone or try to make me feel better when i am in certain moods.

However, i think they can tell somethings about you even when they have only been near you for a few moments. As an example, I was visiting a friend and I picked his cat up and started petting it and just being nice to it. He was shocked and claimed that only his girlfriend and himself were able to pick it up or even get near it. I think this might be because the animal sensed my intentions and knew that I meant no harm.

I have seen the other end of the spectrum with other people as well. Im sure everyone has seen a normally docile and friendly dog go completely crazy when certain strangers walk into a house. While its just fine with others.

i think that animals have a better ability of empathy than we ourselves do, even some of the strongest empaths. i think this because animals always seem to "know." they know when ur sad, happy, having a bad day. they feel it like we feel it. and esp when they are your animal. they know u personally. sometimes better than anyone else.

Yes, animals have feelings too. They can sense when we are sick or if their female master is pregnant. When my minature schnauzer was still a puppy and when I was pregnant with my son. Kaiser, my minature schnauzer, would lay on my lap for hours and listen to the babies heartbeat. He would fall right asleep on my lap and someone would have to get him off my lap. So, I could go to the bathroom. Animals can sense spirits or ghosts too.

I used to have a black cat named Blackie (original I know =P). I had him for over 20 years and he always knew when I was sad. He'd come up and snuggle me and start kneading and loving me, chewing my hair, stuff like that. By the same token, if I was in a bad mood, he'd keep out of my way, and he knew when to be playful and cause mischief ^^

Animals have amazing capabilities . They seem to have the ability to sense impending danger . Like when a storm approaches , animals tend to behave abnormaly . Horses , dogs ect ...I would like to add , the movie Homeward Bound concept is extreemly fascinating . I have heard stories of animals being lost between unbelievable distances , and finding thier way home . I have never seen an example of this personaly , in my life time . Has anyone had an experience with this ?

well i definently agree.. that animals can be and are empaths... my lil Emmy (dog) knows when i am happy.. sad.. angry.... she has different ways of reacting to different emotions of mine.. WHETHER I VOICE THAT EMOTION or keep it to myself ..
someone else mentioned animals being used to sense the oncoming of seizures in patients.. this i DO have "personal" experience with .. as i had a little cousin, who among other health issues .. suffered from seizures... and her lil terrier.. NICK... knew at least 10 minutes before one would overtake her... and would go to my Aunt crying and whining and insisting that she go to Kelly.. and this WASNT a dog they had had from birth.. or even a dog that they had had since KELLYS birth .. it was a rescue dog, well up in years when they got him.

Now... the HOMEWARD BOUND movie ... though no i havent had anything like this happen with my animals or anyone i know personally... there are documented cases here there and everywhere.. and i think it just goes to further and more definently prove that animals are MUCH MORE intelligent.... that the human species wants to believe... humans AS A WHOLE (not talking about anyone here lol) .. are QUITE the arrogant bunch .. assuming they are the only ones that can feel and are smart ..

DarkCeltic, yes I've had that happen, with my afore mentioned cat :) Our family had moved from a large property about 50k's out of town to a house inside the town itself. The first night, Blackie went missing. We searched and searched to no avail. Eventually my mum suggested we go back and look at our old place... and there he was. His feet were a little sore, and he was hungry, but that was it. It was amazing!

Maybe
They can sense somtimes when something is wrong, just like we can.
so it could be possible that animals are empaths.

It's my experience that animals have a more sensitive empathic nature.

For example, I have a cat who everytime I am upset will lay on my chest and purr near my ear. He only does that when I'm upset though. My mom's cat is the same way, she acts differently when my mom is upset. Let's not even get into my dog...she's so in tune w/ everyone in my house's emotions that I'm pretty sure she's started to think she's actually human. lol

I believe that they are, if they have the capacity to love, and they do.I believe that love they feel for us forms a bond. With that bond, they can pick up our emotions.

I have been able to befriend even the most aggressive cats. I guess they can sense my persona or aura, and they can slowly realize that I am no threat.

My ex's parents' cat would scratch and claw and attack anyone who got too close. It didn't matter how nice and gentle the people trying to pet her were — she still went after them. I managed to befriend this cat and before long, I was petting the cat and brushing its fur. No one could pet her and no one could brush her, so she had lots of mattes in her hair which I managed to brush out eventually. The cat would not scratch me, but would hiss and growl at anyone else. The neighbouring kids were even warned not to pet her, but sadly she got her back paw mangled in a chain-link fence being chased by a neighbour dog and because no one could get near her, animal control was called to euthanize the poor thing. She was about 18 years old too...

Also, often I think of something and a cat will go do something (not always, but frequently). I've always felt a connection to cats, more-so than any other animal. I'm the 'catman'. lol

First off, it's been and continues to be studied that dogs are the only mammals other then humans that show unconditional love. So that should tell you something interesting. As children we are closer to animals then anything else. We live off of our heightened senses (especially that hidden sense that animals never lose that we do through conditioning, growing up and being educated threw schools and day to day life.)
Animals have the remarkable sense to be able to pick up something, especially something that isn't right or normal. It helps them protect themselves from danger. It's normal for a pet who has gotten used to their owner and have formed that bond of trust and companionship that they can tell when something is wrong with you before you do.
I saw this great study on how they are studying how dogs can sense cancer in humans and other dogs. There is a lot more to animals then we give credit. We are only beginning to understand. They have been here longer then we have after all.

I'm thinking it depends on the individual animal. Just like some humans are better at sensing emotions so is it in the animal world.

I don't know that "Empathy" is exactly the right word - but a lot of animals communicate through body position and posture, and they're generally smart enough to figure out what the human equivalents are over time.

I know my cat will come find me and do the velcro thing when I am sick or upset. She is only 2 so I have not had her long.. but anytime I am upset even just kinda miffed or blue she will come and not let me out of her sight till I am better than she goes back to disappearing for hours at a time. I am not sure she knows what I am feeling.. but she knows something is wrong or different. And if my hubby is upset or ill... I swear she torments him.

i believe animals can sense feelings in the people they are close to. i was going through a rough time the past year or so medically and emotionally.. my large dog would always know when i had a very bad day. he would lay his head on my knee and just look at me and if that didn't seem to calm me, he would climb fully into my lap (or the best he could). it didn't happen all the time, just when i had an extremely bad day.

Animals are very sensitive in all aspects. they can detect people, other animals or even spirits before we know they are their. I had a dog i was very close to that would hear someone pull into the drive way and run to the door before anyone else knew someone was there. I had a cat that would not leave my side when I was sick or depressed like she had to make sure she was there to protect me while I was weak.

I definately believe that animals are empathic. Most animals can sense emotions like fear and anger so it only makes sense that they can also feel hurt, anger, sadness, happiness,etc... My cat can always tell when I am sad or in pain, he always comes up to me, meows, puts his paws on my shoulder and licks my neck. Animals are extremely perceptive.

my dog has to be the best at telling what im feeling. actually she cried when my brother passed away. and im serious about that the tears poured out of her eyes like she was human for that ten minutes. she knows things before i do and she is always there to comfort at the bad and good times in life. i do believe they not just can be but are!

I'm not sure if they are empaths or its their instinct. Animals have to learn to read the body language of other animals to survive.

I know that my dogs are very sensitive to me and my trouble with MS. If I have trouble one day, my dogs refuse to leave my side. When I'm upset, they are right there surrounding me.
