Name a superstition you believe most in and why.

when you are driving and a black cat crosses in front of you to turn around and head the other way because the last time i did so and crossed the path of a black cat i hit a dear head on doing 50.

I knock on wood not to jinx something.

Walking under a ladder, The last time I did that I fell off of one working on my own roof last summer.

omg I don't walk under ladders either. I tend to fall off of ladders all the time anyways, cuz I'm a clutz, but I don't walk under ladders in hopes of lessening my clutzyness.

I never step on someone's grave (err, the unmarked ones I may have missed are the exception) and I noticed the other day while walking, that I tend to go out of my to step over cracks but I'm thinking that might be a subconscious OCD rather than concern for my mother's back... Or is it a subconscious attempt to repress the desire to break her back? Calling Dr. Freud!

I spill salt, breathe while walking past cemetaries, my parents own a black cat and I never knock on wood (most tables I've tried that with turned out to be formica...).

I'm going to die a horrible death, aren't I? lol

I pray over all blood i spill on the earth, even my own... i don't know if this is a superstition or not.. but hey..

Whenever we dive for seafood, if we move a rock or something like that, we ALWAYS put it back and never eat what we have collected on the beach

I got that from the link I provided and I think it could be true. A circle could be a symbol to shield and protect. :]
I also believe this one, "Seeing a single crow is very unlucky. But 2 mean good luck! 3 means health, 4 means wealth, 5 is sickness & 6 means death"

ummm not really supersticious eg i walk under ladders, i brake mirrors, black cats are awsome in my opinion...when i was younger i always thought that everytime i killed a bug or something like that another one would come and kill me, is that relevent?

I don't know why, but I too "knock on wood" even though I may not be able to knock on real wood.

It is always done after making a statement about how something has turned out good when it should have been bad.

By knocking, I am trying to maintain the positive energy and prevent the damn jinx that always seems to occur if it is not addressed.

Example: Man, I am glad it slow and quiet at work today. (fails to knock on wood).

lol I have this habit that came from a superstition.


When I was little, my grandma..after making a funny/scary face always used to wipe her face with both of her hands and blow on them as to blow away her scary face she made so it doesn't stick on her face lol.



Since I lived with her most of my life, I took that from her. So now I do that everytime I make a stupid face. Just one of the silly habits I have. =p

i'm not really superstitious, i love black cats and i don't mind walking under a latter, but i do avoid cracks but i think that's just OCD.

Its not really a superstition but every time a broom drops in my house I say "Company's coming."

Its an old thing my mom used to tell me and it has always proven to be true. I guess it was a little thing to look into the future.

I dont really think much about it, but I do always stop myself if I am about to walk under a ladder. It could be because of a superstition or just afraid of what might fall down. But that is the only one that I stop myself.

I hold my breath when I pass a graveyard My Nan always said that if you were breathing when you passed a cemetery then you could end up taking the soul of someone there with you.

To right the spilling your supposed to pitch some salt over your left shoulder..

I dont believe in many, but there are a few. Abstract mentioned the "Companys Coming" when a broom falls in her house. I believe in that one as well, it always proves to be true. Another would be the "Black Cat". Also, I've gotten the "If your ears are ringing someones talking about you.", one from me mum. Sad fact is, they're always ringin'. O,O

I dont walk under laders, throw salt over my shoulder and I knock on wood.
I also wish on stars, look for four leaf clovers, have a horse shoe to improve my luck..I dont have the rabbits foot cause it scares me.

I always close a session with a ouija board with a prayer to keep the spirits at bay.

It's not so much a supersticious belief, but more of an "err on the side of caution" sort of thing.

Well I always believed in Friday the 13th superstition, although nothing bad ever happend to me on that day.

I throw salt over my shoulder when I spill it, I don't walk under ladders...I do knock on wood when I say that phrase.

Don't know if it really a superstition, but when you scratch your nose someone is thinking of you. Or play with your ear someone is talking about you, scratch your palm, you'll be getting money. Hell, I ought to be scratching it more then. XD

I also hold my breathe going by graveyards. Step over cracks in sidewalks, don't step on my shadow.....

These are Irish superstitions taught to me as a child. But I have found that they are well founded in reality, having experienced visits from these other worldly messengers myself.

My Grandmother was always saying to me, "if you have a black cat cross your way, spitt fast three times! otherwise something bad would happend!"

I actually never believed this superstition, but I was kind of forced to think about it in some kind of fear, since it was pretty hard suggested!

i do not have many superstions anymore. used to think if i walked on the other side of a pole as my friends that i would strain the relationship. turns out thats only the case if they have the same superstion and are offended when i do it to them (thats the only strain, so i care anymore)

also used to light cigarettes etc with the same flame as my friends, dont know why. dont do that anymore either.

to this day i do not throw tobacco, i give a coin to anyone who ever gives me a blade, i say "excuse yourself, thats discgusting damn it" everytime someone sneezes.. or just damn you (that last one was a blatant joke)

lots of people have spooky superstitions like checking a mirror when they have to go back home cuz they forgot something. its like something they have to do before leaving the second time. and for some weird reason people sometimes have a way spooky supserstition where they like pray and ask that the laws of the universe be comprimised for their confessedly unworthy self.

I am in favor of Friday the 13th as well. Not very unluck...(Knock on wood, lo.) but for the origination of the day was very unlucky.

I stopped believing in superstitions a long time ago. It could be that I am either lucky, or some would say unlucky, but I believe a person makes their own luck.

Well, I don't believe this- but most architects seems to have a fascination with it... buildings rarely have a 13th floor. At least not numbered- the elevators go from 12 to 14.

My entire family does the knocking on wood thing...I kind of picked it up...

I guess I do it because otherwise I start to feel bad...like something bad is going to happen but I suppose that could be part of my OCD.

Not sure if this really fits but I guess its the closest i can get to being superstitious..

What ever you send out you get back three fold. I personally see it as common law and common senses but to eaches own..

I have a black cat, so if I believed that one, id be a nervous wreck. I’d say my one I’m most conscientious about would be the ladder thing.

I used to attend an all-girl's Roman-Catholic private school...(I know, ME of all ppl, but its true!..lol)

They had 3 "magic" bridges there....
1) The "Toll" bridge....if you are crossing that bridge going towards the church you will become a nun, or never get married if the church bell tolls while you are crossing. If the bell tolls while you are crossing and walking away from the church, you will be married in a year.
2) The Kissing bridge--if ever a guy kisses you there by the light of the moon it is who you will marry
3) The Wish Bridge-- it was over a road and when you drove under it you had to honk 3 times and place your hand on the ceiling of the car as you drove under to make a wish.

Those are rather silly I know....
But I do believe in such things as planting lavander for luck, throwing spilt salt over one's shoulder, wearing tiger's eye for protection and contrary to popular belief I think black cats and friday the 13th are lucky ---among a few others! :)

Wow, those three bridges sound very interesting. Do you know if any other Catholic School in your area had those bridges? They also sound pretty old.

Dont know of any other bridges per say....but yes those bridges were old...built in 1840 If I am not mistaken. :)

A little off topic, but the school had all sorts of legends as well as "hauntings" The most famous of which was the "Faceless Nun" who is featured in a book I own....If you are really that Interested I could go find it and give you the title and author...LOL But its something like "Hoosier Hauntings: Real Accounts of Paranormal Events" or something of that nature....

OOoOoo, yeah I forgot about that one. I do tend to have issues on Friday the 13th.. I don't know why because things like that don't bug me but some how it always turns out to be a bad day even when I have no clue what the date is and find out the next day. LOL

I try not to believe in superstition, but I can't say I don't have one of My own that I've not seen many people have.

My superstition:

I won't ever tell someone I love them forever. Everytime I do, something happens to that person, and I get hurt. I will say something like, I'll Love you for always, but not forever. In My life the word Forever is a curse, or it seems to be.

More of a defence mechanism than a superstition - never get your hopes up. Always expect the worst then you'll never be disappointed.

But then, i'm a hardcode pessimist *shrugs*

Like the bridge thing we had one at Incarnate word (all girl catholic school) because of the nun graveyard that was behind the school if you ever did anything bad around the graveyard like cuss or spit or drink those kinds of things you would become a nun so as a dare my sophomore year we dared a friend of mine (who was going to become a nun anyway) to say god damnit and spit while standing in the middle of the graveyard...I found her on face book a couple weeks ago and she did a 360 she’s smoking and drinking and living it up at college lol. So I guess it worked backwards.

Another superstition I was forced to believe in was "don't leave your keys, wallet, or hat on a glass table or you'll never have money".

one of ours is always keep a piece citrine stone in your wallet and you will never run out of money.

mine is that spiders are good luck,I always seem to have good luck when I see one.so I'd never kill a house spider, because it would bring bad luck.

If you knock salt down throw it over your shoulder. I know it may sound lame.. but I actually do it..

my dad tought me the find a penny pick it up all the day you'll have good luck, take that penny and throw it away and you'll have luck another day.

I also know that some people wont pick it up if heads is up.

I have to say the Knock on wood or the "don't split the pole." I don't know why but It has always been in my friends and family so I'm use to it.

because i was told this in my earlier years and i did it very much for a while. and it appears that everything i wished for came true.

I think this is a band thing to keep kids quiet on the bus while the driver has to stop at rail roads.. but when going over rail road tracks you lift your feet, find an exposed screw and touch your finger to it and make a wish as you go over the tracks. My friend is such a band geek she did it while driving!!

now i'm a band geek but we didnt touch the loose screw we did raise or feet and held our breath while passing a graveyard.

I am not superstitious i will walk under ladders. If i break a mirror oh well if i spill salt i just clean it up and so on

I tend not to believe in superstitions... because none of them that i have heard have proven true for me so I don't believe in something that never happens to me..

But... I have noticed that when I'm at work if I do one thing wrong... most of the time it starts a trend for whatever is left of the day I keep making mistakes even when I keep cool and act liek I don't care or if I even FORGET it... then suddenly something else gets messed up... so I guess that if I believe in any superstition it's that if I mess up at work one time more mess-ups will follow. (I have never heard an actual superstition that goes like that but that would have to be mine.)

LOL Is THAT what happened to me??? There were 8 of us around the table, sometimes you ate where you could squeeze in if you were late getting to the table! And since I always had my nose in a book, I was often late!

I don't know if this is much of a superstition, but I have a thing about when i get shivers when the room is plenty warm enough for me. Usually something in the future happens and it tends to be unlucky or even life changing.

Well I picked up the habit from my grandmother when you spill salt you take a pinch and toss it over your left shoulder... well I think its the left shoulder, I tend to forget so I toss it over both.

And I never walk under ladders, but don't think its a superstition more a practical matter. Don't want to be crowned by someone dropping something on my head lol.

i belive in the superstition that if you lock yourself in the bathroom with the light off and hold burning candles in front of the mirror and say bloody marry 3 times she will come and watch you when you sleep and when you wake up you will have scratches on your body i belive in it because i feel that it can be true and i feel that im being watched a lot

Its more Karma than superstition but I really believe if you treat people well you will be treated well in life and if you treat people wrong you will get what's coming to you sooner or later.

Anyway - I am moderately superstitious. I always pick up money on the street no matter how small. We are given gifts for a reason and I think it is bad manners to whoever left it there for you, not to pick it up

Sorry forum I could not resist and see it was removed. So I won't revisit the subject. But I think that if you hold beliefs of this nature it has a way of controling you. You will avoid ladders, you will be extra careful with salt, you will be a bit fearful of black cats. Irrational fear is never a good thing. There is no boogieman , but I have one of these quirks so I am not throwing stones...lol.

I don't really believe in them negatively. For an example, friday the 13th. Nothing bad happens on that day. Its just another day. As for black cats crossing my path..I'm still here because I got 4 black cats for pets and the cross me a dozen times a day. If anything they're more like luck for me more than they are something bad happening.

I try to avoid saying "things can't get any worse" as the universe is apparently on a neverending quest to prove me wrong when I do.

Last year, during a blizzard, my roommate and I were watching the news coverage of the storm (it was that bad) without heat because our furnace died, and while we were watching the news, our cable went out, and not long after that we heard glass shatter in our kitchen, and found that a tree branch had crashed through the window. At this point, my roommate says "At least things can't get any worse." And that's when the storm knocked out our power.

I stared in her direction in the darkness and said "You realize this is your fault for saying that."

Hello, I am not much on superstitions, I do believe that most don't hold water. Not saying that they are not true, it might just be that the more you believe the more they are true. But who knows. Although my wife says if you see a bunch of cows laying down that it is going to rain. lol

I believe in the superstition on how Bloody Mary appears if you call for her.

I'm not sure if this would be considered a superstition of not, but in my family, when it comes to a family member or a close friend dying, we believe in the rule of three, so we are always on the look out when someone dies. I've had the rule of three happen so many times in my family when someone dies, I get scared to even go to work.

And for anyone wondering, 90% of everyone that has died, was from natural causes.

Normally I am not superstitious....

but when it comes to sports, I can never watch my Fav hockey team on TV..... because I'm afraid I will jinx them.

until they hit a losing streak.....

The only one that has ever meant anything to me is spilling salt. I immediately try to throw some over my left shoulder but I have no idea why this means anything. I believe my grandmother taught me this superstition when I was quite young.
