In various myths, stories, movies and legends, vampirism is treated or described variously as a virus, a mutation, an infection, the tainting of a live soul by a malignant evil, and the re-animation of a dead body with a malignant evil.
Are any or all of these transferable to non-humans?
There are few diseases that are contagious from animals to humans, but the ones that are tend to be quite virulent.
If it involves evil taking over a soul like a malignant tumor, then animals would be immune, giving to the popular theory that only humans possess souls.
That leads to the question of humans drained of blood and life by a vampire returning from the grave 3 days later as an undead vampire. There was no soul when the body was re-animated, so why wouldn't it have the same effect on animals?
Food for thought. Can there be non-human vampires?
i think there was another thread sort of liek this before, but any who, my answer then is the same now, animals have a different genetic makeup so i dont think it would work the same.
Don't forget vampire-bats, fleas, mosquitos, ticks, and all those other creatures in nature who drink blood by Nature's design. ;)
Well...there are species of creatures that are called out for vampirism, like the tick.
I don't think it's limited to only humans.
Well to be honest, I don't believe that people who actually practice vampirism as a life style are actually changing, they are just people. So it's not possible for any thing else to become a vampire either.
But if you are speaking about fiction then sure I guess it would be just as possible for animals as it is for humans.
animals ??? well I thought we were animals just on top of the food chain is all :)
Seriously who knows if an animal could be a Vampire
well thats an interesting question. like some people relate bats and leeches to vampirism....but i mean thats just the sucking blood aspect of it. there is much more to being a vampire than just sucking blood. animals are genetically different from humans. I think it would affect them differently. In my humble opinion, vampires as we know and love....that kinda vampirism is limited to humans.
i think purblood said it best and i totally agree with her view on this ...
Well, it worked with the dogs in the movie Blade Trinity...
lol i really dont think that animals could what we call vampires could imagine a dog stalking someone for a nightly kill or better not just any dog but French Poodle LOL
we do ingest blood in meat products anyway, not to mention ostensibly blood based products like black pudding :-)
I THINK JUST ABOUT ANY LIVING CREATURE MAY BECOME VAMPIRIC
Well if vampirism is truly a disease, then yes, I think it could be transmitted to other creatures.
i think only humans can be awakend as far as i know we are the only ones with a soul
considering what everyone else has said, i guess not, it can be transfered to any thing or anyone.
Yes, and then of course there were the vampire fish too :)
Alas who really knows 'tho, lets find a Vampire that stands on two legs first!
in some movie it is some sense that is what we are talking about i would say ya
I'm sorry, but how can you say animals have no souls? I don't buy that: they have souls just like we do, and animals have perversions just like humans do... I would have to say there probably are some vampiric animals out there, somewhere.
Any non-humans that consume blood are just animals feeding from their basic intincts.
I don't see why not. Who's to say anyway. There seem to be blood suckers in all species, lol.
O K so if the meaning of vampirism means drinking blood, wouldnt the fabled Chupacabra be a Vampire also........LOL,Its non human too!
I read this awesome (erotic) book a few weeks ago and the author included vampire cats which were quite interesting. They all had their own personalities. Mortal Companion
except when mosquitos drink your blood don't they die?
Are we speaking about fiction ? If so, anything is possible. Nonetheless, in reality many animals are vampiric and the vampire itself was patterned after the animals.
if we are talking about fictional vampires then yes there could very well be other creatures turned like the dogs in the movie blade as far as in real life I have no idea really
good question... it may depend on the animal. there some animals that have similarity to vampires, but for the most part, animals do have a completely different genetic makeup (don't remember who said that before me.. but i kind of agree with them)
Hmmm, depends if we are talking fiction or not, of course I think it is all fiction, so yeah why not....
I honestly say that if you mean are there animals in the classic sense of vampires then no. When I say classic I mean the undead, although the idea of animals not haveing souls is pure human pride...huburis people huburis. But look at lampreys, bats, worms, fleas and ticks...I mean the list of non human organisms that are blood drinkers is fairly extensive. Even libing humans can develop a taste for blood. But seeing as I have yet to mean a real vampire in the classic sense, I am going with yes animals and anything else can be parasitic and vampiric ie venus fly trap?
Perhaps if the vampire virus in humans mutated, and infected animals, then there would be vamp kittens and puppies. Cute, dead animals reanimated by the virus, but would they feed on other animals or humans?
In the light of mythology and most superstitions, vampirism is usually defined as an abnormality and sickness so it seems to affect humans only, but thinking it over there are actually many creatures who are, by nature, 'vampires' , ticks, vampire bats, leeches, to name a few. But it really all depends on what context you are considering.
i find it quite intresting that animals can become vamps..........
I dont see why not.
Firstly there are real bats that are vampire bats in the fact they drink blood of any other life forms (not to the point of draining them, but wasnt that a facture in the human vampire also)
It is a common fact that deases or virus are transmitted from animal to man and vice versa so anything is possible.
Only the vampire bat in my opinion. As, I don't think it possible if, say, a giraffe became a vampire, being a[n] herbovore and all.
You know, it would all depend on what book you are reading, right? The author cam make anything a vampire.
That is so true. I think anyone or thing can be a vamp.
Huh read this before, to me it seems that animals have a different desighn than humans, could they be vampiric, maybe but doubtful in my opion. Sounds like a movie I seen , yeah on blade trinity, vampire pomarainian.
Many species can be called vampiristic, and some even cannibalistic!
Well since you are obviously speaking of fictional or mythological vampires I would say yes. There have been fictional vampire animals though not all authors may see it that way. If you go by myth that's how the vampire bat got it's name. Now if we consider real life there are as Jens pointed out several animals that live off of blood and could be considered vampiric.
Well, that is one theory. I have read books that said a vampire infected such animals as dogs, cats and horses, and that the animal turned vampiric itself and became a servant of the vampire in some way. I think it is whatever the author decides sounds most believable.
This is a really greta & a fun post with some interesting ideas.
But in way you must think that if she means fictional they put that idea in Blade 3:Trinity.
If she means real-life then I do not think so because if that was the case then there would be alot more vampuric animals out from getting bit from our primaries the bat leech etc.
oh my sure hope its just humans hate to see my dog got vamping about.. would look awful scary
Another question.
If your pet became vampire...would it bite the owner or remember & just protect it?
depends how you've treated it in the past and how well you keep it fed.
Oh another thought while yes some do view vampirism as a disease others view it as a curse. A curse in theory could be passed on to anyone or anything including other animals besides man.
It would depend on if the being other then human was cursed or not rather then diesed
True vampires are not human. They are a different humanoid species.
Realistically speaking vampires don't exsist in the "movie" sense.
but if you are speaking fiction... well in true fiction anything is possible.
Very interesting thought you have put before us.. I guess it is possible for this to happen.
I agree with Wolvie statement the most it explained quite a bit to me anyway.
i believe its possible for anything to be a vampire im a fan of eagles but what ever floats your boat!
by natures design yes, i movies sure why not .. in practice are there any "REAL" blood sucking eternal vamps any ways??
I don't think an animal has a soul, so maybe they are vampires already.
I agree bur how do we know that they don't have souls?
no, many animals display vampiristic tendencies...and lets not forget those creatures in a symbonic relationship with some other creature, to survive, sometimes latchin on and sucking blood from the host.
You mean juno that like when a certain type of fish gets a parasite & the parasite is what eats when the mouth opens.
Why don't have animals have souls? Is the soul exclusive to humans only. Well, humans are animals. Also, the idea of a vampire not having a soul, is **** ****, I think.
Vampire animals, there is no way to prove it, animals can not communicate with us and say yes I feel things strongly, smiles.....anyways some animals have a sixth sence to say, some drink blood, its a complex discussion to say the least and could go on and on. In my opinion I would have to say its possible, but not easily proven.
I would think yes to some animals at the very least to apes. Some diseases don't care what species it is it will infect whatever is living.
no. vamirism can be transimtted to anything with a consicious.
CaptainGlobeHead: you start this thread by expressing the fictional, and in my reckoning that cannot translate into affecting humans, unless of course you mean in a story, myth or movie or myth about Vampire. In that case it depends on where the author of the story wants to take it.
Since vampires are just a myth then there cant be real vampire animals
I would agree with maryjade, If you are talking about vampirism in the mythological sense then no it cannot. Due to the fact that mythologiclal vampirism was based on the fact that vampires were human like.
I am not sure I dont know if I believe vampires are real or not
In theory vampirism is HVV(human Vampire Virus), a mutagenic, wich is acting like any other virus, but instead of destroying it's
host, it is assimilating it, and changing the DNA, in to something new, a Vampire. It is capable of assimilating every cell in ones body. I guess animals can be easily infected as well, and turned/assimilated on the same principle.
Vampirism can't be transferred cross-species at all, there are species of creatures that are already classed as vampires or such, likes bats or there's a squid somewhere, i cant remember the name of it, that has teeth for sucking blood.....
I also believe that vampires are not fact, but fiction, they are a fragment of people's imagination....no-one can live off blood, if you drink too much then it will kill you coz u can't digest it fast enough...
Hypothetically, I suppose it would be possible. But what vampire would really want to awaken an animal?
I believe they would probably have less self control, and it would be hard for their presence to go unnoticed.
So you are saying alcohol is just like blood if you drink to much you will get drunk of it??
take a look at it from this point of veiw,
many viruses can be transmitted to humans, its true.some viruses can be transferred to other creatures.in my oppinion anything is pssible in this world or the next.
I think in a fictional view, yes any animal can, in reality, beside thoser already mention...I highly doubt, unless maybe some are psy vampires, like some cats, or dog.
I dont belive it wouldn't effect animals, because as you said yourself, animals are not belived to have souls, and secondly, animals are structured completly defferent. And i dont think that they can be vampires...
*dons glasses and grabs pointy stick*
Depends upon your version of Vampirism;
If you believe it's a disease then it would depend upon the original form and the adapability of said disease.
If it's a form of necromancy or magick then surely that too would be possible with the correct incantation.
Vampirism caught in a kind of fly... evolving it into what people call a mosquito... little fuckers!
I posted this to two other forum posts about this topic but I will post it here.
Vampire Animals
A vampire's best friend...
Vampirism is not a disease limited to only human corpses. Vampirism has been known to be present in animals such as dogs, cats, birds, and even farm animals like chickens and pigs. It's also the belief that some clans of vampires have the supernatural ability to transform themselves into animals. The vampire animals act in the same aggressive manner as the common vampire. They will attack and consume the flesh and blood of their victims. These vampire animals are said to have eerie red or yellow glowing eyes with an imposing stare of evil malevolence. Strange odors, blood covered fur and supernatural activities also accompany these unholy creatures of the night.
Vampire animals usually begin by feeding on other smaller animals. They tend to be very timid at first attacking only tiny animals like rodents or small birds. As the vampire's power increases so does their bravery and intensity of attack. The vampire animals will begin to attack medium sized animals such as chicken, pigs, cats and larger dogs gaining more confidence with each successful attack. Eventually, the attacks will cover large animals like goats, horses and cows. When the time is right and the vampire animal feels bold enough it will attack human prey.
Real vampires have the authority over certain animals and can command them to do their bidding. These animals may be summoned to protect the vampire from harm during the daylight hours or assigned an evil tasks such as tormenting or attacking its enemies. The vampire lore says that the vampire animals are easier to destroy than the real vampire. They can be shot, beheaded, stabbed, burned, etc.
The most common vampire animal is the hellhound. Hellhounds are giant vicious dogs that terrorize graveyards where vampires are supposed to sleep. They are extremely loyal creatures and will guard the vampire master with their last breath of life. They are usually in packs of five or more and are intensely savage monsters. They hunt together with a psychic link, supernaturally knowing everything that the other hellhounds and the vampire master know. This leaves vampire hunters with quite a serious problem. The best time to destroy a vampire is during the daytime when the vampire's supernatural powers are the weakest, however, to get to the vampire the hunter must first fight their way through these crushing beasts of hell. Not an easy task.
It is said by skeptics that vampire animals are actually regular animals that have contracted the rabies disease common to wild animals. While others argue just the opposite, saying that some animals suspected of having rabies are actually vampires.
Webpage I found this:
http://www.zerotime.com/night/animal.htm
this is the third thread about animals...
I don't know how you can say though that animals don't have souls
i believe that anything is possible and vampirism can be transferred possibly.
No one knows if anyone or anything has a soul. It's a belief system. One I believe and animals...I believe so but have no proof but in Blade, lol...they had vampiric dogs, lol.
I think this topic can only be equated to fiction stories. Therefore, it would depend on the writer.
Of course there can be. There are several species that indulge in vampirism...leeches uhhg!
Jens makes a good point. We have species outside of human that are blood-sucking by nature.
As someone already pointed out, humans are animals too, we're just near the top of the food chain and a little more intelligent.
I see no reasons why any animals could not become vampires, infact I remember reading somewhere about a bird once sighted that was suspected of possessing vampiricy.
I had a conversation only yesterday with my mother about my observation on almost all mythical/fantastic/fictional/unknown etc. creatures. For example, vampires, werewolves, centaurs, angels, demons, succubi, mermaids, elves, faeries and so on, are all human or humanoid.
This would stem the believe in the majority of people that only humans can become things like vampires or werewolves. Stupid really. I mean, why only humans? What makes us different really? Nothing.
Oh yeah, and you can't say that things like leeches, ticks and vampire bats are actually vampiric in anyway. Blood is just what they eat all the time, all of them, the entire species. Not just a rare possessed few. It's just like us eating meat and vegies all the time.
When wild animals kill they do take in blood but I don't know if it is for the purpose of drinking it per se. They are unable to do certain things with the meat they catch in the wild because they are animals.
Being a vampyre is about energy and not blood. Blood can be involved but that is just a form of feeding and getting what is considered a very condensed for of energy. No one really knows as this is just what people say. a fasciination with blood is something else.
If you bring fiction into it then anything living could become a vampire. As for the virus aspect only a small portion of people consider that to be anything to do with the cause of vampirism and to be perfectly frank seen in movies and sometimes a story line in books but as for the community...they laugh at people who suggest that and usually get flammed. I know because I see it all the time. No one talks much about that one because they don't believe it and there is no scientific proof but there is no scientific proof about anything really. All of it is just belief period.
Look at the Masai...I have never heard anyone call them a tribe of vampires yet their main diet is blood (not human) mixed with milk.
most definitely believe its more energy then the blood.. so who knows.. i mean i dont know
it is hard to know unless you been there done that sorta thing..(i think)
i can imagine if humans consume energy some animals could also..
but again i think its for the story teller..
or the one who has been there done that..
I definately think it's possible for animals to be the typical myth vampire. I mean they're living and animals have souls. Well at least I think they do. Their blood can be infected as well as their soul.
I had a vampire I know bit my Hamster Dank Kola Nug ....we'll have to wait and see now.
