Imagine being able to pick up a phone — or a device like it — and dial up The Other Side. Answering on the other end is someone who is no longer of this world — they're dead. Sound far-fetched? Not in the eyes of researchers all over the world who are pursuing tech links with other realms for real-time, two communication — including the inventor of a fairly new device: Frank's Box.
In the years since Edison, a host of two-way, real-time devices have been invented. Some seem to produce amazing results — but as yet no scientific, conclusive proof of communication with the dead. One of the newest in the field is Frank's Box, created by Frank Sumption of Colorado.
Frank's Box scans AM/FM and low band frequencies to create a noise matrix from which the dead — as well as other entities — can use to modulate for messages. It's made of computer, radio and electronic components. Like real-time EVP (electronic voice phenomena), Frank's Box produces messages from a word or two to complete sentences in length.
Sumption says he received instructions for building the device from disembodied entities. His first box was built in 2002, and he has made fewer than three dozen. While anyone can build one from his schematics, there seems to be something especially effective about the boxes hand-made by Sumption himself.

I recently watched an episode of 'Paranormal State' in which the team went to a medical center that was once a mental institution. I believe it was Willard State Hospital but I can't remember the exact name for sure. In this episode, team members were able to speak with a deceased nurse by the name of Lucy using a Frank's Box.
Frank's Box seems to be another way to catch EVP's. What are your thoughts on using current technology, such as Frank's Box, to speak to spirits. Do you believe EVP's actually exist? Considering how the Frank's Box technology actually works, how accurate could responses from the box be compared to random am/fm waves picked up by the device?
Here is a link to an article on Paranormal States' visit to the Willard Center. The episode title is The Asylum.
The only response I can give to this thread at this time, would be the fact that the Frank's Box seems as though it is a electronic Ouija Board.
I never thought if it like that... but you may be right.
that would be neet to talk to the dead.. we would hear all kinds of stuff
like alot of questions whats it like on the other side and such stuff like that..
I truely believe that there are some questions they are unable to answer and those are a few of them.
Lol...If it is real, I'd have to agree with everyone on this one. It DOES sound much like an electronic or digital means of using a board.
If the dead want to talk to the living, I believe it doesn't really matter what is used to contact them. They will find a means to let you know what they wish to say.
Or you could be one of the ones that can hear them as good as the person standing beside you. There are not many around here or I'd probably not like it myself. Still, there are more than the few I see because people are often telling me about 'scary' or 'freaky' happenings that occur to them.
It would be interesting if everyone had to live with two worlds super-imposed upon each other the way I do.
No, I am not crazy. I know I sound like it but get over it.
I don't go around telling people that I am listening to them while trying not to laugh at the person they can't see standing behind them shaking his head like he thinks they are ding-bats. It would be rude, and I am a very polite person, but they can make boring days far more interesting to live through...if you get my point.
I just saw that tonight too! haha.....I was wondering about the same thing. I have heard of the EVP machines from long ago. I know they have been around a long time.
A friend of mine created a machine that somehow recorded notes that ghosts would play, one by one, forming words and short sentences. I have heard some of them. It was really cool. I didn't quite understand how he did it, as he was a pretty secretive guy. He didn't even say his last name! Odd. He was Scorpio though and they are pretty secretive.
So yea, I believe they can be built. Asking questions outright and immediate results we can hear? How is it made and how can it be?
Yeah, they asked a question and received an immediate answer. I don't think that any am/fm radio in the area would be randomly saying the name 'Lucy' at the exact time they asked. The only other thing I can think of is what they had on the show was actually some type of receiver and they were asking pre-determined questions and getting pre-determined answers. I believe in supernatural things but am very skeptical when it's on t.v. where things are too easily manipulated.
Box and board have one thing in common, the ability to be the plaything of those who are looking for sport.
Those who has passed over, I agree do have ways of letting us know they are around us.
To know a loved one is with us, and it would be cool to speak to them as they were long distance.
I dont belive in that device. It just dont make any sence at all in my eyes. Afterlife is the biggest secret of all secret it is no proofs actually of what will happen after death. It is just a matter of beliving nothing else.
Yep; audio Ouija board. Still, I'd love to have one. There's been several instances where something comes out of the TV or radio that obviously wasn't in the programming; I'd be hella interested in getting my hands on one and seeing for myself if it's the real deal.
That's right. I said hella. What? XD
Maybe technology hasn't gone too far enough.
....I had to say it.
I believe that we are going to start seeing a lot more new technologies and retrofitted technologies to support paranormal investigations. Since various groups and/or organizations have proven that EVP's do exist with non tainted documented proof. Others will try inventing different things to get like results.
I think if this box really works it would be a breakthrough to contact the other side. I also would love to hear some recordings fgrom this box
Merging EVP and Ouija board together... about time! I've been fascinated by EVP and want to learn more about it...now will add that website to my list.
On the show, they used a Frank's Box and asked question. The answers they received were clear enough to be heard without havnig to scroll the text at the bottom of the screen.
'How many spirits are here'
A female voice replied with Seven
'What are their names'
A female voice replied with Lucy
'Is there anything else here'
A female voice replied with Demon
The head guy at the institute (I can't remember his name) said he's heard the name Lucy quite a bit in his years on the estate. When asked what about the name had he heard, he replied with 'That she's one of the ghosts here.'
Soulshroude had an interesting statement about the similarities of Frank's Box and an electronic ouija board. I'd like to roll with that for a moment.....
Knowing as most of us do, that Ouija Boards are Not toys and can, in fact, be dangerous; would that also mean this box could be dangerous? Is it more like a portal to the other realm and would you have to close it as one should with a Oija board?
How different is this box from evp's captured other ways?
And last, but not least...Why am I thinking of the movie White Noise right now?
I also thought of that movie when I read up on the box. I've said it before with other things and it's the same with this subject, just because we CAN do something doesn't mean we should do something. Yes, I got that from Jurassic Park BUT I believe it to be a completely true statement. With technology advancing like it has been, should we be even doing any of these kind of experiments? No one truely knows 100% what is out there, what happens after our body dies or about paranormal happenings.
if frank's box were a real thing the we could prove with out a shadow of a doubt they are real where science thinks it is all a hoax or camera tricks and then those who are skeptics can have actual proof in what is really out there.
If Frank's Box is using AM and FM frequencies, it is nearly impossible if not completely impossible to be sure that he's not picking up bits of broadcast and background noise from somewhere that are then made vague and 'mysterious' through static, overlap and radio interferrence. It is the same problems with EVP made worse because now it's using multiple media input.
Its probably more accurate then what you're getting with just a regular EVP device. Im not sure, haven't heard anything from this Frank's Box thing yet.
reply to The Unknown
Unfortunately some skeptics shall always be skeptics no matter what the proof is we lay upon their laps. There is so much proof that has been scientificaly tested and still there are skeptics.
When one is not open minded enough to see a possbility nothing will deter them.
I truly agree with Boneyardvixon - should we be doing this?
I would think, especially in my own experiences, that a living person who can speak to those who have crossed over would be more accurate and more reliable than a machine/box.
Daemona - as well there are those who will believe what they want to believe regardless of what mundane facts are brought forward suggesting the contrary.
It's not wrong to be skeptical and it's not wrong to believe in more supernatural answers but most of us would like to know that our beliefs are founded in either experience or repeatable methods. It's what keeps me from sending money to televangelists every week :)
Sounds like pulse and white noise lol. And electronic ouiji board cracked me up!!! Lol. I am not too sure if I believe in all of that but it is VERY interesting. If the dead can contact you through a crystal ball why not frequency waves? There is more scientific proof that it exists which I read up on. Its cool to hear about these things.
It seems like Franks Box is just finding Evp'S
Still the implications are interesting.
Wow, that's incredibly interesting. I definitely believe in EVPs and the like, but its hard for me to say whether this would be accurate or not. It could just be a scheme. If it is, I have no doubt that sometime, a few decades, maybe even less, in the future, there will be a successful one.
So is this replacing the living person who talks to the dead?
I don't think any device would ever be as precise as someone who actually is gifted in that area and knows how to call spirits.
I have to agree it does sound like an electronic bord, but it sound cool too. It is hard to make a determination either way until I had the chance to use one myself, but thats just me.
I truley hope they perfect this communication. I miss my DAD so much and so does my mom. We see him in dreams and such, but we really want to talk to him clearly.
Having it on TV, makes you wonder if there were people using a frequency to talk through Frank's box to make the show more interesting and duping us all. We are all skeptics with lots of different TV shows out there and getting the ratings.
However, if there are reports of other boxes with witnesses, then that helps to give the credibility for the device.
Who knows how good it is but this sounds interesting. Wonder who would answer .
i think this is very intresting but it makes me wonder how to control who is on the other end
I think this one of those "too good to be true" things. Like many others in this thread, I agree that it sounds like an Electronic Ouiji Board. Something I would NEVER play with. This falls under things that I am not comfortable touching or being around.
if it helps him get through the day so be it... in my view there is a reason they say "Rest in Peace" on the stone. You should take the days you have now while your loved ones are alive and tell them what you feel not call them afterwards.
Too bizarre.
If Frank's Box actually worked, I would wonder who would answer. I imagine some poor souls would want a departed loved one to answer and speak to them.
Like all means of contacting teh dead there are bad things that can happen also. Myself and some friends are big into EVP's. My one friend while doing EVP's had a spirit attach himself to her. He was on teh evil side and it took about 7 months for her to get rid of him. If you are not willing to take the risks associated with this, and also dont have a means to vanish a spirit if they attach to u. Then my suggestion is do not do this. there are risks involved.
I saw mentioned earlier this box will prove that spirits are not a hoax. Anything can and will be disputed by those that fear what they dont know
I can just hear the operator now... a spookey sounding voice comes on and says 'Franks Box operator, who can I connect you too' LMAO
I don't think it's replacing humans with the ability to speak to spirits, it's another way for the majority of us who DON'T have those abilities to hear what is being said from the other side. You don't seeing people with the ability a skeptic, it's the rest of the world that doesn't have any special abilities that don't believe.
I was also worried about it being more of a receiver and someone just saying things for those on the other end of the boob tube to hear *but* there is still that wonder, what if? I don't believe in anything unless I experience it personally, which is why I research alot of things and am a big skeptic. I think people will believe what they want to believe.
How different is this device from a regular radio or from a microphone? Nothing is ever truely silent, there are always underlying noises in nature that are always present. You may not be able to hear a flower grow but with ultra-sensitive equipment, who knows what you can hear? Frank's Box could just be a super-sensitive microphone picking up noises accumulating throughout the building.
You have obviously researched this thoroughly BYV, thanks a lot..it is always interesting to read something new on here :) I do like Soulshroude's theory of an electronic ouja board..
Yes, I have been reading a lot about it since watching the episode of 'Paranormal State'. Although I do think a lot of those shows are a crock and only looking for ratings, I did find the episode I learned about the box a very interesting one. In the eposide I watched, the 'spirit responses' were much more clear than in the video clip I found above.
this is really interesting to me, but i wonder if they could make someything that would talk on higher frequencies as I think that a lot of sprits, ect. talk at faster frequencies....
This is so aweosme!! do you think they ahve actually reached people from the other side? It sounds too awesome to believe.
I'm not sure the physics of radio transmissions match up to voices of spirits. It may well be occuring, but for a scientific analysis of the signal heard over this type of a device, one would have to log what frequencies, modulations etc the voices were being received on. One could even trace the source of the signal. I just don't know a spirit would know how to modulate electromagnetic waves to the point that they could be detected by a radio receiver.
I find this little invention intriguing. How do they figure out what is the voice of the spirit and what is just random transmissions it picks up though? It'd take a lot of guesswork, I'd imagine. But still, it's a definite improvement towards talking to the dead.
so i wonder if everyone could own one of these one day, if so would they be totally calling lost family members?
this sounds fascinating..
I think it is really cool. With EVP's you are sitting there trying to pick out words from static noise and if you listen long enough I am sure you could hear a ton of things but with frank's box they words seem pretty clear you don't have to strain to listen to it so it would seem more believable especially if you were able to get specific information from the spirit you are talking to.
There is no way a machine can replace the actual conversation between a spirit and a human vessel.I know this from experience having spoken with a few spirits myself.
If a spirit wants to speak to us they will find by any means neccesary to communicate with the living world.
And if this box is using AM/FM frequencies why cannot everyone hear the dead speak while listening to the radio?
Seems to me like a ploy to make money off of people desperatley wanting to speak to lost loved ones.
the box goes through a series of filters so that the voices are more clean so that you can hear them better. It is just clearing away all the noise and stuff that happens when you are using normal EVP equipment.
Although there has to be something different between the box and a radio, i'm afraid I know nothing about electronics to be able to point it out.
I have seen people using normal evp equipement (of t.v. of course) and the sounds are very different on a franks box. I did state in an earlier post that I wonder if it could be picking up signals from a local radio station. However, I still don't see a radio stations broadcast in any way similar to the answers heard on the Franks Box.
Very true I watched that episode of paranormal states where they were using franks box and it was answering specific questions so that couldn't be just picking up radio stations but the way they explained it was through a series of filters that clean up the noise to make the voices clearer
Again, I think this is something that should not be messed with at all. I am not a skeptic at all, so please don't try and accuse me of being one.
I just think this falls under the category of DO NOT USE along with Ouiji Boards
BathoryBabe, that's what I was thinking. How many stations could possible be saying the name 'Lucy', and for what reasons, at that specific time they asked the question?
Either the machine does what it claims to do OR someone is transmitting answers and it's a hoax.
I did see that episode, and it was fascinating. The very idea of being able to pick up a phone and talk to my dead friends is so far fetched yet apparently easily within reach lol.
I don't tend to think that's possible. I believe when someone passes on their spirit wonders around until it finds a new host right for them. I don't think it's possible to *voice* communicate with them
So you believe a soul is reincarnated into another body. Then why do mediums, like John Edwards for example, exist?
If this could really be achieved it would be gigantic and I bet Microsoft would try to copyright it!
Good question, Boneyardvixen.. and MaraJade, you know he would if he could!
If a person dies, say in 1408, it might be 100 or 200 or even 300 years before their soul is reborn in a baby to relive again... who's to know? Perhaps those voices from the other side do not wish to live again but to stay where they are, they do not feel the need to do it all over again.
Wow, do you really think that they would have to wait as long as that? Well, I suppose 300 to 400 years is only a moment of time in Eternity :)
Too true, I don't think spirits would perceive time the way we do. Time to us is a mathmatical calculated thing/idea. I doubt there is anything quite as concrete where spirits exist.
as far as people like John Edwards I think it is possible that they can talk to those who have passed on because I don't think you reincarnate till you reach a certain place ie the light. and some souls may not know they are not suppose to be here or don't want to leave the life they had. But I am sure there are many reasons for people like John Edwards to be around.
Oh wow, this is an amazing topic! I've always been fascinated by EVP's. It does sound like this Sumption guy is on the right path.
As far as using EVP's to connect with spirit, it seems obvious that they do work but most of the time you only get fragments and not a full sentence. The only thing is, I sometimes argue against using scientific equipment to communicate with spirits. I know I'm being somewhat biased because I'm studying Mediumship, but people who use science to study ghosts aren't going to get the results they want all the time. The spirit has to choose who they communicate too, it doesn't work the other way around. (Not in my experience at least)
Still, I say good luck to this guy. Like I said before, it sounds like he's really onto something!
I have been told by mediumns Spirits know no time on the other side.
Many are woken up all hours of the night..many have told me...
Many spirits do not wish to come back. A well known mediumn and teacher said before her passing over, her husband in the spirit world showed her the home they were going to live in and try to help world peace.
I am only saying what has been told to me, and I always keep a opened mind about these subjects.
But how do you know with 100% accuracy that they are telling the truth? That is the question right there. I could sit here and say i've spoken to Abraham Lincoln, claim he told me this and that and no one would know if i'm telling the truth of not.
More proof that it's all just mumbo jumbo?
As I experimented with various forms of EVP using white noise from white noise generator circuits, and noise between stations on an AM radio I found that listening for the voices with the volume turned all the way up on the tape deck would make my ears ring after a while, so I started searching the web for other methods. I quickly found EVPmaker, which is a software program that runs on a PC. The program takes a wave file of human speech provided by the user, and chops it up to form a "raw" audio that the spirits, and other entities use to form their voices. The program plays this raw audio randomly back out of the computer speakers, while at the same time recording it. The result is often coherent, meaningful messages formed out of the raw, random audio. I had very good results with EVPmaker, but lost most of my early files due to computer crashes. Often I would get messages relayed by spirits that could use the computer, from ones that seemingly could not, so in early 2002 I started wondering what else I could use. After about a week of this "thinking" my current system kind of popped into my head fully formed, all I had to do was build it. The first "box" worked, but was unreliable, and unstable due to the components I used. The "box" was based on providing the same type of random raw audio that EVPmaker does, or how I thought it worked anyway, except in an analog method. I had assumed that the raw audio had to be random, but this has proved to be mistaken in later experiments.
Article from Frank's box creater
I'm still reading up on Franks Box and I don't really see a difference in other EVP equipment.
I believe that technology will develop to that measure when it wil be capable of reading every every unexplainable aspect of the paranormal side of the world.
I did see this episode. I thought the box was a freakin' awesome thing!
I believe in EVP. I've always been in the middle with trying it out. I know I will not do it in my home. It's way different when you are out and about truckin' into some cemetery or something. Doing it in my house would just make me paranoid. I am already paranoid enough, I don't need to add to it.
I can see the advantages and the disadvantages.
The good thing is you can hear them a lil more clearly, but even though you open that line up to good spirits, you can also let in the bad.
With them telling the truth, I think it's a take it at your own risk kind of a deal. If you can research it and find out it's true, then believe it. If not.. take it with a grain of salt.
Just in general, you have to get a handle on who you are really listening to. My training is in electrical engineering and I work in wireless communications. Try and understand what it is you are hearing. Is it a ham radio operator messing with you, is it really the spirit world?
If it is the spirit world, be careful. It is dangerous to deal with things you don't fully understand.
I find the concept interesting... but how reliable is it?
Even with a Ouija board you have to be aware and careful of being fooled by lower level entities that want to play games or find someone to possess. I can't help but think this device just gives lower entities a voice to mess with you even more.
i found that pretty interesting. it just shows the evolution of the paranormal. from watching ghost hunters iv heard alot of voices on evp, now i know its now very reliable from tv and you cant trust all of it, but i have alwas wanted to try one out for myself, and now maybe this box too
Energy is never lost, and many of us are part of the universal consciousness. I believe that when I die my collective energy returns to it with all my current and ancestral memories intact. I believe this unit taps into that, the universal consciousness of the collective mind.
Welcome to the Matrix.
I agree with you Laz, the energy never goes away. Thats what probably happens to our souls.
What you have to wonder about is how a certain spirit can somehow control this energy to show up on a radio transmission.
I do believe that this could be a very useful tool in communicating with another realm, but I also feel that it would have to be used for the right reason.
I find this all very interesting. I too think of it as an electronic ouji board or crystal ball. Spirits are all around us and I do believe that they can contact us if they so choose. Soon technology will be advanced enough to pick up these messages. When this happens and if it becomes increasingly possible what will happen to all the Mediums out there?
i would just freak out and not wanna answer the phone again
Also sounds like it could be apart of the movie 'One Missed Call'. Only better.
I think like has been said here it is like the ouiji board and should not be played with you never know what you could be bringing into your home with any of those devices. But at the same time they are cool
I think something like that would be awesome! If only we could hear words more than usual sounds affiliated with spirits.
If this is for real, there would definetly be alot of unanswered questions. I know there are a few that have passed on I would like to ask why.
Frank's Box sounds like the newest paranormal electronic instrument for speaking to entities. It isn't tha tfar-fetched, it would be just like speaking to a room and someone replying that is dead also. it's just over a phone...
I find this thread to be extremely interesting. Yes this would not be something to just "play". I dont see this as being a toy. Seems to me you would want to explore further but carefully and with respect as you might not know what your going to get.
I think this is an awesome idea. Ya kinda like a audio version of the bad board(we all know what Im talking about) but still a good idea at most. They say the ghosts try to communicate, why not help them out a lil?
Sounds wild.. If paranormal voices can be picked up on tape recordings, radios and other devices why not on Frank's box..
where i sign up for one just kidding lol..finishes reading
I'd be all over it given the chance to use one or be there while it is in use. Would thoroughly enjoy seeing what it is capable of up close and personal.
As most things, being smart about it when using one like using a ouija board comes to mind. Never let your guard down.
I would love to talk to the dead for i have dear one's i wish i could talk to however, the frank box seems far fetched but then again technology has come a long way... but i would have to be cautious around this one
I agree with others that is like an electronic ouija board. I myself believe that EVP's and all of that is real. I see no reason why spirits and other entities can't contact us here. It makes sense to me. I find these sorts of things fascinating. If this box is for real (and there is a good possibilty that it may be) then we have made yet another huge breakthrough in technology. If the spirits of the dead are trying to contact us, then I think they will find a way whether we create things like this or not. I just think this may make it easier for them.
