Do you think art can really bring out supernatural activities? What do you think about the "symbols" of Satan and God, and do you believe in them?

Do you think art and the supernatural is inter-connected in any way, and how so?

I never really thought about it.
But I reckon so.
Art, in my view, has the ability to influence almost anything on this planet.
Why not the supernatural?
I think that symbols of God and Satan, however, are simply that. Just symbols that bring meaning to those humans that would be affected by them.
I think that when a band plays a concert, they are drawing energy from the crowd. I consider music art. So yes, I think the ability to draw energy or lifeforce is art. But that only really covers vampires.
*giggles*
Sorry, it's all a bit of a jumble. I know what I'm trying to say!
Vampires = artful.
Other supernatural beings = I'm not so sure.
Gods and higher beings = No. Not connected to art.
^.^

You think God and art are not connected? What about all those paintings?

I think art IS life. Without art, there wouldn't be life. Without life, there wouldn't be art.

I think art is everything, and it effects everything.

Yeah, I'm with you on that.
I did a journal entry on how my favourite people are art.
I guess what I mean, is that although everything is art, there is a lot of art that I don't consider art. Doesn't mean it's not, it just means that I don't understand/connect with it.
Such as piss on a canvas. Some call it modern art, I call it a weak bladder.
Art pertaining to God and Satan merely affect the followers and the believers. I do not think that it connects directly to those beings.
Unless, of course, you are of the belief that God only exists through the creation of a large number of peoples' imaginations. Then yes, God is completely and utterly affected by art. Music, painting, the whole shebang.
I guess there is an art to everything. Even things that are not artful, for it's an art to not be artful...

I was watching a documentary on art. This professor Lewis Williams was talking about neolithic cave art and he was saying that, "[the cave] paintings were not just pictures of everyday life, but they were about spiritual experiences." Art he indicated was all about magic, it is where it started, and for some artists it is still about the magic.

However if you are talking about magic like, Oscar Wilde's, "The picture of Dorian Gray," which from Wiki...

The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward, who is greatly impressed by Dorian's physical beauty and becomes strongly infatuated with him, believing that his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Talking in Basil's garden, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new kind of hedonism, Lord Henry suggests that the only thing worth pursuing in life is beauty, and the fulfilment of the senses. Realising that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian cries out, wishing that the portrait Basil has painted of him would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, subsequently plunging him into a series of debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin being displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging.

I think gothic horror about art is fictional :)

I think art is an expression of ones self. And how they look at life some express threw journal or bloging. Some threw music some threw poetry. Some even threw writing fictional stories. And nothing to do with the supernatual at all but what we feel inside us that we can not get out or explane.

Religious art is the evolution of the symbols used in neolithic art. It also follows the theme of religious beliefs through the span of our existance, most notably the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Hindus. The image of the divine is believed to have power, so there are numerous temples and cathedrals filled with sacred art. Believers wear metal images of their divinities as talismans, and adorn their living spaces with images and statues of them. Art makes the observer feel closer to the divine. Of course there are religions that feel venerating a statue, or picture is too close to paganism in this modern day so their temples are devoid of sacred art.

Ok I believe that art is a wonderful and beautiful thing. The artist expresses themself through their work, even with some it reflecting on religious things or demonic whichever way they feel or believe .

Also it is a way of expressing their fears as well .... so do I believe that art is connect with the supernatural? Well I believe it is up to the eye of the beholder and how they may persive it.

Some art is very much connected with the occult and dark side where onthe other hand alot is with heavenly and godly things so ..... do we believe that are is connected with the supernatural .. maybe then maybe not, we have used art *idols* , *images*, etc with all things relating to religion and even demoinc worshipping so .... there for art is a strong part of the supernatural, to me just my opinion is all..

Well, energy definitely plays a role in art, both in making it and effecting people once it's finished....and the supernatural is highly dependent on energies....so I''d say yes, there's probably some connection there.

Gregory, you are right. In my opinion at least. Art is everything, including life. Everyone is a piece of art. They are their own canvas.

Now art being connected to the supernatural and the idea of higher beings such as Satan and God. They are. The art that depicts them gives the world a connection with them.

I think that art reflects what the creator believes and can influence the observer. It could have a number of effect. It could strengthen faith in the supernatural, or offend the viewer for example. Beyond that, I'm really not sure.

Personnally, I think that art and any symbology contained in art only has power if it can be received by the observer.

The observer is the only one who can experience the art form and/or decypher the symbols contained in the art.

I think a painting with symbols of god and satan, and another symbols and references will be lost and useless if observed by a tribesman from the deep Amazon.

He would not have the mental reference required to release or generate any energy.

I believe that art and the supernatural are throughly connected. As for the religious symbols, any object can hold connection to a god/goddess/devil if enough faith is behind it. If you believe throughly that a cross is a physical representation of god then it is, simple as that.

Music (being a form of art) can bring out things that normal would not show them selfs. Also I have seen pictures that have been said to be haunted. Them gave me the oddest feeling when I looked at them.

Anyway...yes I think that if done right right art can effect the supernatural. As for what the right way is.... I have no clue!

Art is the oldest magic. cave dwellers would paint successful hunts on their walls to ensure it would happen, and they wouldn't go hungry. must have worked, else we wouldn't be here.

there always has and always will be a powerful link between Art and Magick. Austin Spare's paintings were magical spells, and the paintings on N ative American shields are made to invoke protective spirits.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder . . .

And perhaps insert good vs evil/bad instead of God and Satan? Again, that can be very subjective.

For myself, I do not call one swipe of paint across a canvas art, but others do.

How about the tv show, Heroes where Isaac's talent was going into a trance and painting events yet to come? Wonder if others have done such a thing.. or to paint a scene in which to hopefully change their reality to reflect the painting?

I am sure ther are people who's talents lay in painting scenes of what could or would happen and up to the person to work on changing that outcome - like guidelines Tarot card readings can be.

I have never really gave it that much thought. Good subject though. I believe maybe they might have a connection, but i believe that it might have to do more with the arist then the painting its self. I believe the artist can channel there energy and passion into a painting or forum of art enough to give it some kind of power of not really being but more of just a ball of energy.

I'm not sure if I totally understand the question. Do I think that art in itself can bring about supernatural activities? Well don't think that a drawing or painting of anything by itself will open a door way to fairy land and leprechauns will jump out screaming for beer.

That being said, as a tattoo artist, I have seen first hand how tattoos can certainly have an effect on the people that get them. I'm talking about complete transformations on a persons psyche not just a passing mood. Is there something supernatural behind this... I don't think so. It probably has more to do with their subconscious.

I do believe in the use of sacred names. There are many documented cases of them being used and the resulting effect of their use.

Art can transcend like music can. People can be drawn to a painting or drawing, even CGI art and be just sucked into it with what it is saying to that person. It is an individual thing.

Music and art is there for the beauty and pleasure it gives. Sometimes giving a person much more than that, gives them focus and even sanctuary.

If you look at certain religions, organized or not, you'll see symbolism plays a huge part in day to day rituals so it's not a huge leap to assume that if these symbols made it into what the mainstream regard as Art(hidden or obvious) then they'd certainly be able to bring out supernatural activities.

The symbols of Satan and God?They have symbols now for those two?I mean the only "symbol" i can think of to represent God would be the Crucifix but that's more related to his supposed son than he/she/it themself. As for that guy Satan...666 is just a number to me personally.

Quote - "Do you think art and the supernatural is inter-connected in any way, and how so?"...

Yes i believe so..when i paint oils on canvas the thoughts/ideas rush so fast and furiously through my head that i almost always block out all around me and enter into a state of being i suppose some would call a trance but it seems so much more than that...i become so involved with the paints, colours and the canvas that my mind almost becomes one with the whole process...it is by all definitions a mystical experience, hence the connection to the supernatural...most only experience this kind of thing with meditation, rituals and such.

I think a lot of art has been intrepretated by the artist to be either good or evil. You can see this in many Churches and Cathedrals and particuarly in the work of Michael Angelo

I think they Can be but aren't nessacarily always. Of course one can paint symbols into art, or incoporate art into ritual. And I am sure there have been instances recorded where metaphysical beings have created art for what ever reason.

And I am sure many of you are aware of the amount of artists which combines religious symbolism into thier art and no I am not simply meaning Cathedral windows and the such.

And depending on your view of religion, technically it could be seen as supernatural in someway and so that would count.

Art, like all things, can be magically oriented. It has to do with symbolism overall. Symbols are exclusive to animals that can think in the abstract. Letters themselves are an example of it and can by stylized and used in ritual.

Personally, I use art in the creation of sigils. They are usually pretty simple, but the symbol of a sigil is a definite art form, as are the summoning symbols of demons and angels, and several other 'magical signs'.

But then again, a line is a line is a line. Unless otherwise specified.

I thought to add that the deeper question here is how the supernatural works... it can be perceived in art, but really art is a means of triggering a certain reaction in our minds that is 'magical' when it comes to ritual. What we associate with the symbol or work of art is all that really matters and what seems like 'magical' to one will carry no meaning to another and/or vice versa.

I would have to agree with the statement "Art is Life". Every work of art is a world of its own conjured from the stirrings of the artist's soul and heart. As for the meanings and associations- in this case God, Satan and the supernatural, I think it is up to the viewer/observer to introspect. I would like to believe that art is a personal experience, different from one person to another as well as having different degrees of influence over the onlooker.

_I'd have to agree with Elizabeta on that aspect. Art is something that all people can connect with, it is a universal language. While we may not connect with all types of art, i.e. my professor who thinks anime isn't art, it influences all of us in some way shape or form, whether we want to believe it or not. Every piece of art we view affects us in some way, changes us a little. And yes, to me, art is life. Without art, we wouldn't have the buildings we live in, or the music we listen to. We just wouldn't be able to survive. As for God and Satan, I do not believe in Satan. I believe that there is an evil force just as there is a light force, but I do not believe in Satan. I'm Wiccan, and so it is basically the God-ess. The symbols of God and Satan are art in some way shape or form, and they do affect me every time I see one of them._

Do you think art can really bring out supernatural activities?

Yes I believe it can, if the artist put his heart and soul in to it.

What do you think about the "symbols" of Satan and God, and do you believe in them?

They are just symbols, to some they mean something to others they are just paintings on the wall.

Do you think art and the supernatural is inter-connected in any way, and how so?

Yes, art goes allot deeper then people think.

Yes I do believe that art can bring out supernatural activities. Most people get inspired to do their art whether it's drawing or painting etc... Some people get inspired in a dream or by something that happened to them that was a big inspiration.
Some dreams lead up to supernatural occurances so I do think that art can bring out supernatural activities and I do think that they are connected in some way.

Do you think art can really bring out supernatural activities?

Could be. When I read a poem about Necromancy that I have attached to my bedroom wall (it is not mine) something weird happens during that night.

What do you think about the "symbols" of Satan and God, and do you believe in them?

Hmmm...not exactly but I love religious symbols even though I am not religious.

Do you think art and the supernatural is inter-connected in any way, and how so?

Yes, talented Art has to be supernatural because talents don't get learned, get developed and skilled but not learned. Also certain drawings have like a hypnotising effect on me, I am able to stare at a picture for a quite time if I like it, and I don't realise it. Maybe it's not supernatural maybe it's just my mind but I like to think it's supernatural, I am a big fan of art even though I am a crappy artist and dare to call myself an Artist!

If you consider symbols art, definitely..But I think its more of the feelings it provokes in people. Like the ankh, or a cross, or a pentagram...It gives believers a sense of security, often times...And opposite symbols could give them other emotions, such as anger, or feeling vulnerable and uncomfortable.
Maybe some supernatural beings can prey on those feelings, and the feelings that paintings or drawings inspire, too.

Reading more of the posts on this, and pondering it some more, I present an interesting thing to consider.

Do symbols used in art provide any power to the art work?

As a picture the sits on the wall, no.

The proof: Create a painting with various Wiccan, Christian, and/or Satanic symbols. Show this to someone from Nepal or from the Amazon jungle, or some other location where there has been a lack of symbolic exposure.

Depending on the asthetics of the artwork, they might be emotionally moved, but I seriously doubt that their reactions will be caused by the presence of any of the symbols.

The ability for the symbols in the art to produce any power will be from the emotional response by a viewer who is famliar with the symbols and can respond to them with their knowledge.

I think art and the supernatural are really just different forms of creativity. People have muses and others say they were inspired by the gods. I believe they are stongly linked together.

What if your muse was a dearly departed? Would that mean your art would be supernatural? Or just art?

Art is defined as a creation. Almost everything we have on this Earth has a symbol. I think that symbols are just a way of a meaning. We have symbols for the elements and what not. The symbol represents the thing it symbolizes. Something has to be created first before you can give it a symbol. I think that art and supernatural are connected but only through symbols. The symbol IS the thing. Know the symbol and you own the thing. Like in most rituals some sort of symbol is required.

I believe that art and the supernatural go hand in hand. As Dragonice said when you create something you put your heart and soul into it.. therefore it creates a life of its own.

Symbols as come down through generations have power because we put the belief into it... hence we put our energy into it... which is what gives it life and power.
