It seems voodoo is originally from africa. I wonder do voodoo have anything in common with other religions? And is the voodoo doll a pure evil thing or can it be used to heal?
http://www.religioustolerance.org/voodoo.htm
Here is a website that will help answer your question more in depth.
I wouldnt just trust religioustolerance. I have found some of their information to be faulty.
Voodoo, Voodun, Voodou having been around for quite a while, are all speculated to have manipulated qualities and effects.
From your speculated "South African Doctor", to the curse of the presidency; Which was actually a American Indian curse, every something or another president being assassinated, are all part of the same speculated theory. Being that of a Shaman, or Witch Doctor aka Voodoo Priest(ess).
I may get more indepth after a few posts come into play.
Well I don't believe that the doll can be used for just that, but you never know. I personally have never really gotten into the whole voodoo thing so I wouldn't really know. I think it could be related to other religions I mean they all seem to have something in common.
Very interesting post ... I personally do not believe that a Voodoo Doll can be good tho, I think they are ment for harm.. Personally I also would not mess with Voodoo..Had some friends tell me stories, who know first hand...
Voodoo is a recognised religion, in only one place in the world, and would'nt you know it, I forgot where lol....but I know it's just one.
Voodoo is indeed a religion that came from Africa orginally. When the south africans came to america and settled in the south is where is still remains. Especially in Louisana. The voodoo doll can be used for different methods as can any form of magic. A more typical version of the magic is called Hoodoo. It is much more wicked and darker. Personally am from Louisana.. and grew up knowing a woman who was a priestess in voodoo and hoodoo. She was a wise woman but not one to cross. Both are a form of heritage that is passed on through generations. There is much tradition and meaning behind every practice.
It only works when the person believes that it will. Believing in it gives it power. To my understanding voodoo was never intended for healing, but in fact quite the opposite.
I have never heard of a voodo doll being used to heal either
Voodoo did come from Africa. a nother type is Hoodoo. Voodoo can't heal people.
voodoo is aficans mix of christianity n there own pagan flavour ....
yes everything can be used for good or evil .... mainly good as it is christian in base makeup
Voodoo is not an evil religion, it does have some basis and ties to Catholocism but the names of the saints are different from the names that we are used to.
I heard the same thing *70z28man.. It is a religion that is a combining African culture/religions/beliefs with Catholicism... Much like pagan religions combined with Catholicism with is reflected in many of the religious holidays celebrated today.
About six years ago when I got my distance healing attunement in Reiki, I called a well known Voodoo store in New Orleans. I spoke personally to someone in the know about using a doll for distance healing. Its possible - and done! So, take it from the source and don't rely on here-say about voodun. Its not so bad as you have heard.
Is it fair to say voodoo is a form of magic? or is that wrong?
Voodoo is Network Manipulation of a persons social life through minions in network sucker books are prized among them.Once voddo answers one of your wishes it draws in in for all the things that the networks trips you up with the vodoo are cunning and flim-flam billions (Billions) of dollars from "believers".
I never could understand how someone could take a doll and stick a needle in it and that would resemble someone that they hate or want to get even with and supposedly that person would feel the needle I think it's all fake and a bunch off hocus pocus lol
VooDoo, Hoodoo and the like are both magic and religion to answer someones question as is Wiccan and druid.
Voodo dolls are sold to people that wish revenge(a strong emotion easy to exploit).the person leads the network scoots to the person after they are told by the "practicioner" to gather supplies....then the person can be discreetly "tipped"for insight about the wrong the sucker perceives that was done on them. Then they use that knowledge to undermined that person so they appear to be curse by the intent of the sucker. Some even draw the subject of the curse to be cleansed of it using inside info to know there vie and symatize with them.in small communities Voodo thrives.
Dabbler... A true Voodoo doll must be made with or by the person whom wishes to use it.. just a FYI..
either way I have known Vodoo affiliated people who sold them or "charged them"for people at 100 +a pop I know Wanders as well who use the same scams as Vodoo but without the "feather and bead show".
If there are true Vodoo practicioners then I have yet to hear of them.please provide links.
As other religions are used by splinter groups and then con artist get a hold of it using religious backing the results are exploitation, people dieing from cures after giving their life savings to a Voddo priest.
There are a lot of people out there that "claim" to be a lot of things that should not discount the reality of whats really out there.
There are endless abouts of scam artist out there voodoo, Christian, Jew and Muslim. Faith healers, priest, Holy men, witch doctors and so on... Just because you have run across a few snake oil sales men does not mean that they are all fake..
I just caution people not to suspend there reasoning in exceptance of faith based claims.
I agree whole heartedly across the board..
with religion and heck even any belief based system.
Voodoo originated in Africa and was imported into the western world by slaves, mostly from western Africa. It is a religion which is essentially ancestor worship. It is quite ancient, and can be found today among the Fon people in Benin. The doll is more fiction than Voodoo practice, but zombies have a basis in fact.
i think it depends on how you use it. you can use it for bad or good.
Actually as Billy has stated, the dolls can be used for healing...As well as for gambling, good luck, money etc. The use depends greatly on how the doll is created.
I don't know much about the voodoo religion but I am highly skeptical about a doll being able to hurt someone or give them luck. I would have to see it to believe it.
I should think it works both ways. You can heal or damage...its all in the intent.
As for your ties with other religions...I don't think I can answer.
from what I know about voodoo dolls it is more a power over another person then a healing or harming tool.
i personally understand the voodoo as a representation you make of someone, through a doll, and if you use black magic you can harm... now... i´ve tried some spells using candles that you have to carve giving the shape of the person you want to help... and you cover that doll with oils and perform a healing spell... i understand that as another way of voodoo but with a good purpose
I have never heard of Voodoo in refference to healing, but have heard it to have refference to being a religion. Either way its not something to be taken lightly for it does have a dark consequence for unexperienced use.
I have been informed that the religion Voodoo strongly denounces the practice of most of the non-registered-churches those splinter groups are scam artist simuliar to the rogue evangilist in the christian faith.Fellowship under religion is accountable to a group gathering place not those back room come at the stroke of midnight back alley voodoo parlors in the big easy.Yet just like most religions those that want the wam bam thank you for the blessing or spiritual fuzz to my woa and they will continue to attract people that are seeking short cuts in spirituality. For a while the Voodoo religion was reluctant to confront the issue but I have been informed that they now are.The seperation is in the novalty of practice like voodoo dolls are not of the religion.Hoodoo,Voodoo, even JoJu practices vary some to seem conected to a church because that apperance of legitimecy is important to fraud. The best place to recruit is among church goers.
Voodoo is a recognised Religion in many parts of the world and it can be used for good or bad just like anything that has majickal powers behind it. If you believe in it it can be very pwoerful and it also can be very Harmful depending on the ones using it and how they use it.
I feel alot of people feel it is just for Bad or evil and that is not true at all, it can be used for many things for many people ... it is just a matter of believing in it or not .
Voodoo to me is like any other magical religious belief either you believe it works or it does not.. just my opinion..
Being half Cuban I have found that there are other religions practiced similar to Voodoo in many of the Caribbean islands, such as Santeria. Basically, it is a mixture of Catholicism and witchcraft/paganism that was practiced by the Africans and the islanders before Spain took control.
Santeria is still widely practiced today, and is very similar to Voodoo, which I have known to be practiced by quite a few Haitians [sp?]
If ever you are interested in learning about Santeria, a good book to look at is "Dreaming in Cuban" by Christina Garcia... it is written from many points of view, so if you are skimming through the book, the sections narrated through the character Felicia's perspective has the most to do with the subject of Santeria.
Actually, I think voodoo dolls have been used for healing, not just for harm. Once you read more in-depth about the practice, I think you'll find it's not as bad as many are led to believe.
Very Cool Thread...I have made a Voodoo doll myself but not to hurt Him, just to get under His skin, be in His thoughts and all...I believe in karma and this all adds together in a way...As far as it doing good, doesnt see why it wouldnt...But I am a learner...
like Santoria etc, Voodoo has it's place, however the religion that came from africa had different influences enacted upon it
The Voodoo doll is a focus that represents the target of your magic. Other religions share this focusing method but using drawn images of the target or in a less similar fashion using items of or from the targeted person.
Voodoo like other things can be used for harm or good. I have seen it first hand for both. I have never done it or been a victim of it....as far as I know, but I do know someone who has and who can do the voodoo.
it is the same as any other religion it is what ever you make it Good Or evil
I goodled this as I could not remember the one country that recognises Voodoo as a religion.
Vodou is fully recognised as a religion in Haiti
AHP, 5 April 2003. A presidential decree dated April 4, 2003 recognizing Vodou as a religion indicates that all Vodou chiefs, temple officials, officials at a sacred site, as well as all Vodou organisations or associations are empowered to file a request for recognition by the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs.
If you look more into it you will find there are two very different opinions.
1. Voodoo is the only hope of the poor.
2. Voodoo is directly responsible for creating more poverty and personal loss.
Young children are taken by practioners who force parents to hand over large sums of money to buy them back.
Their reasoning is, they have chosen these children to become future 'priests' and parents it seems have little choice in the matter.
One coin, two sides.
i have a friend from haiti and he practices voodoo he has made an efigi of me to help me with my gambling habit to help me win when i do gamble and to try to curve my indulgence so i believe that voodoo dolls can be used for good.
i would also like to add everyone is intitled to their own opinion but there is no need for SOME PEOPLE to be RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL its ok if you dont believe but to call it hocus pocus and fake is just RUDE
Anything in the wrong hands can be evil in the right hands can be used for good.
There also is dominican voodoo which is witchcraft and is basically thier form of religion
I've never heard of it being evil, I'm sure someone can use it for the wrong purposes if they desired.
In real life occurrences, I've seen it used to heal and promote well-being in a person. I don't know much about the practice myself, though.
LS ;)=
I will eat my words if you can provide me with a link to something other then a sactified church gathering that shows that Voodoo is not Hocus pocus.Note I am not against the religion I speak of the rogue practice.
and any religion that is used by tricksters needs to police their ranks constantly Rude for giving people a reason to be cautious...? I think not.
i think you would have to belive in that religion before it could say have an effect on you . and then even if it would have an effect on you if you belived id say that would depend on the person and what there mind is willing to do to freak them out. or beileve they are being healed. much of voodoo is herbs and such to so halucinagens can play a big factor in there to . as some native american indians used to smoke weeds that caused halucinages there for visons were seen and prophsies told. as there fastings on a vision quest also caused halusinations and in turn on what they saw would work it into there day and age and what they thought would happen. a mind is a very tricky thing especially when mixed with what you belive or dont belive in.
When I hear testomony from people who kept Voodoo swindles under wraps a church is never involved directly though they do warn members to be whery of side practiconers I apolize for any generalizations i have made. But Voodoo has been tied to fraud the fact that they use personal ritual involving grossly embarassing things done by those grief stricken people love lorn people and financially ambisous persons, people seldom comeforward against voodoo scams. So I restate my note of warning keep to church funtions ....in all religions if you leave the church there is no accountability for the actions of the person you are putting valuable info up for reading/study.
I have had very little exposure to voodoo but I have been told that it depends on the person who is preforming the magic. It can be both good or bad, but I have also been told that it is unpredictable.
I'd like to believe that if a voodoo doll can be used for harm that it can be used for healing as well..
Voodoo is meant to put fear into somebody. I believe to be able to make it work that the person has to really believe in it.
I cannot say I have heard of it being used for good but that doesnt mean or say it doesnt. People generally on tell the bad side.
Boy, came into this conversation way too late... everything I was goint to bring have already been brought up!
Santeria being the offshoot of voodoo when the Christian/Catholic religions were introduced.
Voodoo dolls are representations and can be used for whichever purpose the wielder of them wishes.
Most definitely a recognized religion and one so full of misconceptions all thanks to Hollywood.
I don't think Voodoo is something that I would like to delve into too much; it sounds whacky but scarey!
In Voodoo, the belief system is based on a primary supreme deity and several demi-gods called "Iwa". It has been compared often to Catholicism which believes in one God yet has many saints. Another focal point of Voodoo is ancestor worship. In Voodoo ceremonies, spirit shakers are used to call upon ancestors and the Iwa.
Here is a bit of a History lesson for you:
In 1791, a slave uprising in Saint Dominque, today Santo Domingo, brought to New Orleans free people of color and their Voodoo religion. These people had no knowledge of European history and had certainly never heard of the Inquisition. They had no reason to believe they could not come to this city and worship freely.
The first Voodoo Queen in New Orleans was Sanit'e DeDe, a young woman who had bought her way to freedom. She held rituals in her courtyard on Dumaine Street, just blocks away from the Cathedral. The rhythmic beeat of the drums could be heard during mass.
For this reason, the Church decided in 1817 that no religion other than Catholicism would be allowed to be practiced within the city limits. It was in Congo Square, now Armstrong Park, where the early Voodouns held their rituals. Here, Voodoo began to evolve into its own New Orleans brand.
It was intermingled with other tribal religions as well ass with Native American customs. The Natives sympathized with the Voodoo practitioners as they had with the Islenos, and taught them about the plant life in the area. Eventually much Spanish and French culture was blended in as well. Even today, New Orleans Voodoo is very differant from the purer form found in Haiti and Africa.
(My apologies if my little history lesson skirts the boundaries of the Forum guidelines, if it does, please delete it accordingly.)
i have been into a voodoo store in new orleans and it had all kind of things in it but i dont know about how many of these thing work. the voodoo doll is surpose to be a toll to inflick pain on the person that you hate. i have one some where in my house.
Very nice post Soulshroude. Thank you. Its true voodoo is a religion and a form of magic. Like any other form it can be used to help or to harm. There is good and bad in all things.
Soulshroud...I like your 'historical' entry. I have a sister who is into voodoo - more about the history than the practice.
to answer the questions directly ... there are some things in common and no a doll can be used to heal.
I follow the Vodou path, which originates from West Africa, in the country of Dahomey. It was brought to the Carribean largely through the slave trade. The slaves in the Carribean blended their path with Catholicism in order to practice in secrecy and safety from their masters, who mainly originated from Catholic, European nations.
In Haiti, the Vodou path is actually called "Sevis Guinea", which roughly means "to serve the spirits." The Haitians serve spirits called the Loa, who are akin to guardian angels. The Loa are seen as helpers or mediators between humans and "Bon Dje", or God. Practitioners leave specific offerings and conduct rituals for the Loa regularly and on special holidays. Vodou is seen as primarily a monotheistic religion in Haiti. In West Africa, however, it is more polytheistic in belief and practice.
Healings and magick are conducted in the Vodou faith, but the practitioner is seen as responsible for their own actions and the repercussions of performing any type of magick. The Will of Bon Dje is the final determination with any kind of magickal working.
As DamienA previously and accurately mentioned, Vodou is primarily a path of ancestor worship. Not only do you serve the Loa, you leave offerings to your ancestors as well. Some of the Loa were once humans who were elevated to a saintly or deified status through their actions.
Vodou shares some things in common with other paths such as Shamanism, Paganism, and Ceremonial Magick. It is a sister to other Traditional African religions. Egyptian Reconstructionism, or "Kemetics" is similar as well. Kemetic reconstructionists often view their Gods as different aspects of the "Aten", or "divine spirit", similar to Bon Dje and the relationship of the Loa.
The Vodou doll, I believe, was sensationalized by Hollywood, and is largely a thing of fiction. Effigies and Poppets are used more often in Hoodoo, which is a form of folk magick.
for those of you who want documented fact ...i will say check out the movie serpant and the rainbow it is more of the real life zombies and how they are made but it is all part of the practice of voodoo this movie is based on true events
LMAO!! Obama dolls!! ROFL!!
Anyways you may find this link interesting,
Origins of Voodoo
Isis temple knows what she is talking about.
I could add two things:
~ in Haiti some catholic priests also practice voodoo (and this is an interesting aspect of this religion)
~ the puppet has an ancient tradition in Europe witchcraft so it`s not a specific voodoo practice
voodoo doll is just like any other magic tool something to give the person help. Like any tool can be used for good or bad.
The sham voodo practitioners rely on embarassing rituals that bind their dupes with secrets
i think voodoo is somewhat like what some would call 'witchcraft', but i don't think it's either good or evil. It depends on how it is used.
Voodoo is more of a generic term and generally indicating New Orleans practices or practices of the American South. Hoodoo here is something else and is often referred to as voodoo as well but it is a magickal system and not a religion. Originally it was more that way in Africa and is something else here. It is a combination of Native American root work and those practices that evolved from magick the slaves practiced that meshed together over time. It is American Folk Magic.
Poppets are used in other forms of magick besides African styles. Most of what we think of as Voodou or other names that were previously mention vary by region and go by various names and traditions. Such as Obeah, Candomble, Santeria, etc.
Voodoo comes mostly from west afraica where it was started, And a Voodoo doll can be good or evil depends on what your using it for.
isistemple said it best and dabbler just because you dont believe and think it to be fake dont go bashing something you know nothing about except the fact that people believe and have a right to believe how they want it dont make them wrong or right it is a belief system that comforts each soul in every type of religion
Voodoo is a derivative of the world’s oldest known religions which have been around in Africa since the beginning of human civilization. Some conservative estimates these civilizations and religions to be over 10 000 years old. This then identify Voodoo as probably the best example of African syncretism in the Americas. Although its essential wisdom originated in different parts of Africa long before the Europeans started the slave trade, the structure of Voodoo, as we know it today, was born in Haiti during the European colonization of Hispaniola. Ironically, it was the enforced immigration of enslaved African from different ethnic groups that provided the circumstances for the development of Voodoo. European colonists thought that by desolating the ethnic groups, these could not come together as a community. However, in the misery of slavery, the transplanted Africans found in their faith a common thread.
They began to invoke not only their own Gods, but to practice rites other than their own. In this process, they comingled and modified rituals of various ethnic groups. The result of such fusion was that the different religious groups integrated their beliefs, thereby creating a new religion: Voodoo. The word "voodoo" comes from the West African word "vodun," meaning spirit. This Afro-Caribbean religion mixed practices from many African ethnics groups such as the Fon, the Nago, the Ibos, Dahomeans, Congos, Senegalese, Haussars, Caplaous, Mondungues, Mandinge, Angolese, Libyans, Ethiopians, and the Malgaches.
I don't think it really goes with any other religion except its own.
when white man brought the slaves to the americas they were forced into catholism but also did not wish to give up there own gods they believed in as i will always say where there is belief there is power this does not make the religion bogus for the lot of us here we are in america where we settled for freedom to believe as we please if we dont believe what another does there is no need to bash them to try to change thier ways ...also isistemple i thought that the hatian vertion of voodou was scantamaria ... iam not argruing what you called it my mind wonders sometimes and i forget and my own info gets all switched around in my head sometimes feel free to correct me if iam wrong
I was told it can only hurt you if you believe it is real
From what I have learned of Voodoo, it is a religion. But also, voodoo works a lot on the mind and if you believe it works it will work, if you have heavy skeptism then chances are nothing will work on you. A lot seems to be hearsay to me.
As for the doll as far as I know it has been used for healing, fortune and to bring love into a persons life. It isn't always used to cause evil.
If something can be used for evil then I dont see why it cannot be used for good. Everything has a good and evil side, black and white etc
Voodoo is an ancient religion for Africans. And yes a voodoo doll can be used for good or ill intentions.
