I have noticed that in a large number of movies, books, tv shows, etc, vampires are portrayed as being either gay, bi, or at least metro. I am wondering if there is any factual basis for this portrayal so why do you think this is and what do you consider yourself?
A movie is just that, no matter what sexual portrayal the movie depics the "vampire" to be, it is up to the director to create that portrayal...Mayhaps the director is viewing the Anne Rice sexual view of what she deemed fit to justify for her mental awareness of the "vampire." Or, it could be the director has inner feelings they are trying to approach but are afraid to reveal to their friends, so they let the general public become aware of it.
I do not seem to grasp the relevance as to why a "vampire" needs or has to be gay, lesbian, bi, or metro as you put it. Personally, romance comes from all walks of life.
*Chuckles and raises a brow* Something troubling you? Thinking about coming out of the closet perhaps?
Considering if vamps were real they would in fact be dead, so I dont think romance would be an issue with them
I would have to agree with Blackhawk because once vampires are dead they wouldn't be able to feel the sexual part of being with someone. Unfortunately, Romance novels and movies portray that to make our minds think that but in reality they don't have no such bearing in reality because their bodies are cold even if they were around us.
With this day and age they have to include all sexual orientations into movies. Just like they have to include all races.
and even in these much vaunted cinematic offerings the vamp in question admits to having no heart beat or love (VanHelsing) however we find in Bram Stokers Dracula, a vampire very much in love, whatever sells is what he or she is going to be depicted as reguardless of gender
Please don't take their insatiable sexual appetites away from fictional vampires!
Without that, they are left with only their bloodsucking and might as well be zombies.
Vampires have the leisure to pick and choose, to get into the individual, so to speak. In an immortal life, I imagine human sexual preferences might become irrelevant.
I think authors writing about transcending gender in relationships is another way of getting out the word to the outside that times are progressing and it is time for "society" to stop being so closed-minded and and setting "moral"standards when it comes to sexuality.
The modernized vampires seek love and companionship, and are able to love whomever they chose, regardless of gender, without the restrictions of social propriety, because they are outside society's confines and prejudices.
Perhaps, one day, it will be possible for all of us.....
well in the movies they do not try to be bias LOl so they show all sexuality sides and it is just that a movie.. something that sells the Vampire concept.. just an opinion
I actually have to agree with PsiVamp. The ability to pick anyone to feed from gives you the ability to choose any sexual nature you wish, permanently or just the once.
And of course since most people have a desire to at least try something "new" (don't deny it, you really can't) it gives the reader a more personal experience with the players in the book, movie etc.
An interesting question however let me shed some light on the subject from what I have observed. Ok let’s see in any movie do the vampire have sexual relations with or even kiss the same sex? I personally have never seen anything like that. They are simply obsessed with the beauty and fragileness of the human body be it male or be it female. They love and respect what they once where, its not sexuality that the authors are describing, but the love of the mortal that the vampire are exhibiting and in order for that to show truth they would have to admire both sexes. Its not about sexual preference its about the lust and beauty of what they once were and what they once took for granted. This is best exposed in Anne Rice’s book, Interview with the Vampire.
we can be anything. we are just like humans, we don't have a designated sexuality. we just don't really care cuz energy is energy, usually our sexual encounters have to do with the energy.
that is mainly because of the director because the new movies are done that way to make people less scared of vampires. the old ones show just how ruthless a vampire truely is
What LadyC said! lol
Of course the overriding factor is food but I do think part of the "art" of all the books and movies is tapping into human desire, after all if it doesn't peak our baser interests you ain't gonna make any money.
I agree with LadyChordewa on the basis that this sort of depiction stems from Bram Stoker's depiction of the vampire. Throughout the time between his novel and, I'll say Anne Rice, the vampire has really become a creature of seduction, which kind of adds to its other macabre traits.
Each author has put a spin on the vampire and an immortal bisexual is where they have ended up.
I agree that perhaps the sexual orientation was written into recent media to include all people of any orientation. I feel that a vampire is often referred to as being a "metrosexual" archetype because they are often thought of being clean, beautiful, and borderline obsessive compulsive.
Movies portray vampires in all sorts of sex types.. Straight or gay.. Those are just movies.. What the producers think we all want to see. I think that vampire do not need to have sex but can and do just to show the closeness to his or her mate.
I always thought that if you were immortal and had been around for hundreds of years, straight sex had probably become "old hat" and you would be eternally in search of the next big feeling.
Sexuality sells and appeals to the masses, myself included, so adding an erotic or taboo dynamic to any novel, movie or television series, serves to attract more attention and commands a much wider audience.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula challenged the old folklore image of Vampires being unattractive monstrous beings, by introducing Dracula as a physically strong individual who exudes sexuality. Now who can say that those are not attractive traits?
He used the vampire as a metaphor that exemplified Victorians views of sex being perilous and precarious. For women, sex with a vampire was transformational, creating seductive sirens as opposed to the stereotypical Victorian views that promoted chaste and dignity.
Bringing it back to the notion of vampires being gay or bisexual … Why on earth would they not be also? Sexuality is not confined to heterosexuals, it embodies the entire sexual orientation spectrum. It would be discriminatory not to ;)
some vampyres don't feed off blood at all. in rare cases there are incubus/succubus, which feed only on sexual energy.
Oh thats sounds so much more appealing than those who feed on blood ;P
hahah, it's all too risky for me though. aside from regular psychic feedings of emotion or just plain energy feeding without blood or sex.
because you could catch deadly diseases, much discussed in other forums.
But surly the element of risk is equally as appealing and exhilarating? It evokes all sorts of emotions, raising issues of trust, danger, being chosen and the prospect of life or death. In my fantasy world those are more exciting prospects as opposed to the risks incurred from having sex with mortals ;)
I thought, and I am probably wrong, that since the Vampire is undead that the normal rules of living beings no longer applied. So would who they fed on actually denote sexuallity not to mention without the blood flow, how would the erection take place?
But I do agree that the mainstream media has started to portait them as a sexual being and not gender biased at all. I guess that arose from their need to feed regardless of gender and was just transfer to sexuallity out of romantacism.
If I am wrong, someone please set Me straight.
I dont think it matters what the sexuality is, as we have all seen they are romantic creatures and they are always horny
The way a Vampire looks has changes so much. In the oldest legends a Vampire is a bloated corpse that rises to drain the blood of the living. But books and movies have made them into what people today see as the Vampire.
I believe that a Vampire's perceived sexuality can be attributed to it's desire to feed.....
what is easier?
A vampire attacking someone from the shadows.... with a possiblity of the victim escaping and running away?
or....
A vampire seducing the victim and luring them into a vulnerable state?
when a vampire bites someone or even if there is aperson that might bite a bound is created between them and it can be confused with attraction to the point that a vamp no longer cares what sex there partner is. and so in a way the movies are true because only a few vamps can tell the diference between blood lust and true attraction.
Coming out of the closet or the crypt lol
Life imitates art or art imitates life.
I guess when you take out the need to procreate … then sex becomes just that.
Three cheers for blackhawk........ a vampire is dead so wouldnt the lust they feel also be dead and since the dont breathe I lot would be misssing how would the kiss and do a lot of things
Wow. I was not expecting this discussion to be so big lol. Y'all are raising some good points. As to my sexuality i'm already out. lol. I was just trying to figure out why there is a social trend for vamps to be portrayed as gay/bi or whatever.
lol, well, if were talking about the immortal vampires, maybe it gets boring being with the same sex after a few hundreds years
I agree with Soulshroud *think I spelt that right*
The sexuality of vampires in films or books .
because in the end books and films are just make believe.
Very true darkXwhisper and we all know the significance of blood in relation to "rising to the occasion" lmao
I doubt a vampire would have any sexuality at all because they're a bloody risen corpse.
I know a few mortals who could be described like that also ;)
That's cause of the crowd you hang with, mimi. Broaden your horizons, baby.
I find the way vampire sexuality is portrayed to be offensive. Not all vampires sexual desires are the same. They come and go. Vampires can feel just like humans can. Mayhaps even more so.
i think that thye are written this way because thye were originaly from back in the days when everyone was gay or bi. and it didnt matter. so since the stories all come from that time.. they have kinda kept that part in them up too.. this day..
I also agree with PsiVamp. Also, the fact that a Vampire has no preference as to which sex it feeds on, so why have a preference to whom they love?
stereotypical how can a dead being love anyone or anything.. movies are movies they are the fantacy of the writer to make money in books in supposed real life tales vamps only use what they have to, to get what they want and that is to feed but also i think that the scare is even better if you can understand that gets the blood pumping
The blood is blood, I imagine if vampires don't necessary have sexual relations (intercourse), yet I could imagine they would induce an experience in someone, like they had had sex, then regardless of gender the person is likely to think they had sex, instead of feeling the extraction of vitality.
i think is might just make a better story or some thing, i dont think it means anything.
but i am bi
it makes no diffrent to me movies, books, legends.they always protray themseves as being very sexual, therefore i fine the myth to be very sexy
Not all of them are they portrayed as sexual or anything like that. I consider myself to be me.
They are movies and Hollywood is its self we all know that. You may get a high from feeding it may be sexual or it may not be, but All Hollywood see is what can they sell, sex sells and being gay and stuff is still some what risk gay as they say.
i think that what ever we so happen to find sexy that is all that matters anyway right. i am so sick and tired of Hollywood to say how we should act or what we should eat or even how we should be intimate with our loved ones. Hollywood is well Hollywood they are paid lairs worst then lawyers in my book.
I think there is inherent sexuality in the vampire (modern or otherwise) the ability to take ones life blood falls in the same category as sexual pleasure, psychologically speaking.
As for being gay, bi, straight or "try" it's a matter of modern perceptions and ideals of our own sexual nature.
Well for me, a Sanguinarian, I have as far back as I remember (and I am on my like 15th life here approxiately) , I have always been bi or pansexual, meaning gender is irrelevant as far as attraction goes for me, it's the act of romance, the pleasures of the flesh that rule me, and it has very little if anything to do with the persons actual gender.
This is the way I believe it is for TRUE actual vampyres.
Well I think that it is more the Hunt and prey for the Vampire not so much the sexuality or preference of said sexuality. I mean they feed off the ones they feel may be the most .... how do I say, interesting or fun to play or dangle with, and then they become their victim once they are done toying with them. LOL just how I look at it.
Grant it the Bram stroker (SP) vampire, was very in love with his prey or should I say the woman whom reminded him of his Mortal wife, and he was recapturing the LOVE of her (trying to) and we see how that turned out LOL
I feel for a Vampire to allow Love into the mix is very deadly for one.
I mean it is not sex ... I have not ever seen a movie yet that the Dracula actually had sex with anyone.... if so then please enlighten me so I may watch it LOL
i think they do that because vampires are very sexual beings and them living forever, they would be more open to trying anything than mortals.
I still say its Hollywood putting fake tales in to are heads
I think that LadyC hit the nail on the head with her post. To me its just whatever sells in the theaters or in books.
chances are in movies they want people to believe they are very sexual which they are and some are bisexual gay lesbian or straight it really depends on what blood tastes best i think...or what they are attracted to...
I personally think that in almost every novel about vampires this day and age, the author is trying to sell sex with the book. We all know that sex sells, and its just another chance to increase profits. As for them being bi, or gay... Come'on.. most of you are talking about Ann Rice in the first place. We already know how she writes, what with the Beauty saga and everything. Of course she's going to be predisposed to writing about going any which way so long as it made for a solid scene.
Although.. if ya are talking about Anne Rice, its kinda weird.. none of the vampires have sex after they've been made(Except Lestat in Tale of the Body Theif) a vampire. In the books, its always about the blood. I like that. I think books should stick to that more. The blood should be the rush, the "orgasmic" moment that Vampires live through/and for. Hell... I know that if Feeding on blood planted me firmly on Cloud 9.. I'd probably be a Bloodhead.. (VvvV)/
And really, if it was all about the blood like that, and the rush, it wouldn't matter who you were feeding from. It would always be more about.. how much is in them, how strong is the heart, and how long can I make this jucie bag last... Like Tantric for Vampires.. =D

Today's vampires are seen as supposed to be appealing to both sexes... That's why they're all beautiful, gay, lesbian, whatever.... They have to be perfect in order to lure in whatever they want.. Everyone wants the perfect person.. that's what they're supposed to be.
I Don't Think They Are So Much As gay, But Vampires Regardless Of Sex Are Supposed To Be The Most Seductive Of Creatures That They Can Seduce Anyone They Want.
And for That reason It would Be More Of A Game And Not a Sexual Thing.
vampires express love in a different way they don't fall in love with the sexuality because they cannot procreate they fall in love with the person hence why they seem to have little pattern in their choice of partner
vamp sexuality that very intresting yes most movies now a days are portrayed this way but in essence if we were all looking for a feeding it wouldnt matter how we got it aslong as we fed
Meh. Just go with the whole Anne Rice thing. Vampires can find anyone aesthetically pleasing.
i think vampires are just like humans sexually they can be of any preffernce i think in movies they are gay/bi because it gives a more shocking experience to society.
Oh so true. they market a lifestyle not try to make it real
i believe that vampires were once human, they have the capability of having any type of sexuality they want. Whether it'd be, Bisexual, Gay, or Straight. I feel like they do certain things in the movies for that shock value. The want the audience to go Oh My God! and think the movie was brilliant! But i think there is some realism to it. Maybe they do find that when crossing over they have a new taste for sexuality as well as blood an such things.
That makes me wonder why a vampires sexuality would make an audiance go OMG?
Jeez Distortion, haven't you been watching General Hospital? Sexuality always makes people on-edge. They want to get in on the action, and want to know whether or not they have a fighting chance.
yeah i find the marketing of vampires so to speak to be way off and find that media still portrays vampires as the old myth ways and not as the current modern day vampires, how they truely are.
there is nothing to say to this one......idc what they say about vampires on tv or out in the world.....you shouldnt let a small matter like this get to you as long as you know who you are it doesnt matter.....
and to answer your question i am straight with a gf.....
Seeing as vampire's are portrayed as human but with...different habbits, i guess when it comes to sexuality they are just like humans - Have the concious to decide what suits em.
According to Upir's research,it is one's sexual stamina that determines of you are one or not.
Indeed Oceanne :)
We must not forget that nearly all of the original vampire stories are developed around our sexual nature. The vampire has always been a sexual creature but like I've said before the whole gay/bi thing has, for the most part, come about due to recent cultural changes.
They really are Zav.And actually,I am posting Upir's link here in case anyone would like to see what he has found in his research..
https://www.vampirerave.com/profiles/profiles2.php?profile=UpirLikhyj
As for the gay/bi thing..Im open,as I have several thoughts on that, but I personally ,I feel it could also be the survival mechanism that is demontrated when a group of animals has reached the peak of its resources.
But thats a whole drawn out topic in itself..
I'm not going to read every response. But I did come across ladyC's first response...
I take it you have absolutely no belief that vampyres are real? Seeing as how you compare us to the average hollywood vamp as being "dead". Nothing can be dead if we're alive and breathing.
Oh, not to pick on you now that I see how many people think this. That's just sad. I think people should do more research about subjects before they make a statement.
XTC? might I ask what leads you to believe you are a vampire? And think about what Upir might think of all this..the man has done extensive research and has solid findings..yet not one peep has commented on the information provided...doesnt that in itself tell you something?
"vampires sexuality would make an audiance go OMG?"
How about the fact that a true Vampire can sustain a hard on for hours without the help of drugs?Yeh,that would certainly elicit an OMG from me or anyone else.
Actually, according to the research I linked not even close. You might want to go read it..seriously.
I don't think, I know. How you do you know that you're just a regular human? I will respect your belief, as well as this Upir person you speak of, whom I've never heard of. But we're all different. And the truth is, nobody has all the answers to who and what we are. I'm just saying, what do you consider to be alive or dead? Are vampyres not just like humans? We eat, breath, love, hate; what makes the belief that we're dead. We don't sleep in coffins, those are just too uncomfortable. You don't need real fangs to be a vampyre. Evolution has solved that problem. Our donors freely cut themselves for us, thus making no need for our fangs. We don't explode in the sun light, that's just silly. Although we do have an extreme sensitivity to it, which is why sun block comes in handy. Yes, we are more acute to our surroundings. Stronger, faster, and hightened senses. We know who we are, we don't need mundane people to tell us that. I just wish to spead the truth.
I don't think, I know.
*** I understand that,I can see by the conviction in your answers..but how do you know it isnt just lifelong fancy?***
How you do you know that you're just a regular human?
*** Im not,at least in some ways ,and I know this because of genetic testing and many other things ***
I will respect your belief, as well as this Upir person you speak of, whom I've never heard of.
***Thats good, because I respect yours, even though I ask my question and I most certainloy respect Upir, who just so happens to have some of the most solid and documented evidence out there***
But we're all different. And the truth is, nobody has all the answers to who and what we are.
*** That goes without saying***
I'm just saying, what do you consider to be alive or dead?
*** It would take far too long to answer that ,but I do not consider Vampires to be dead***
***Please do not take my comment wrong, but that is yesterdays news.***
Yes, we are more acute to our surroundings. Stronger, faster, and hightened senses.
*** I disagree,Im faster, stronger and my senses are heightened more than almost anyone I know, supposed Vampires included, and Im no vampire. Not bragging, but its truth..that just comes down to genetics***
We know who we are, we don't need mundane people to tell us that.
*** Make no mistake, you are just as mundane as any of us,in no way are you or any Vampire supernatural.***
I just wish to spead the truth.
*** I dont mind the circulation of truth myself, but sometimes what might be true for us,isnt what the reality of it is.***
This debate is more trouble than it's worth. Some people just aren't ready and never will be ready to handle the truth. So I will leave you with your beliefs, as I will leave with mine.
well my take on vamp sexuality comes from the old vamp movies where dracula made his way to a sexy ladys bedroom to put her under his gaze and feed on her and make her one of his brides?
he only ever bit a guy to kill him?
the romance was always female orientated?
and in the series moonlight the vamp guys have girlfriends! and a couple even died together for their love!
i think a vampires sexuality comes from within the individual?
and the individuals sexual ideals?
as a hetro male i find the romance and eroticism is aimed towards the female and related female ideals !
Thank you CountessMoon.;)
It isnt a debate, there are many here who would love to know why you feel you are a vampire, beyond a cultural choice and are far more than ready for the truth...it is why we are here...But I will be honest,by what you have said thus far, there is still nothing that would begin to lead us to that truth. So I asked. And I am genuine about it..not making fun at all.
Vampires have always been portrayed as high sexual beings and that is the way they would lure "prey" and take their fill.
Whether they are gay bi metro or whatever is just
ack sorry about that
it's just how you want to portray the being or how the persons life was before being changed
The movies do whatever it takes to get the attention of the audience... I feel that their is no sexual preference I mean if they are dead LOL and only feed from us there is no attachment ot attraction in the sexual sense. :)
I noticed that besides being attractive sexual beings, many vampires are also portrayed as being refined and educated...a bonus!
Well but of course, many have lived a very long time and has gotten the refinery and knowledge parts down pat... They are usually very intelcetual people*beings*
Which intrigues their prey.
Well of course it is up to the writer or director to portray them as such even though we know that they have no need for sex. They have drastically changed in their portrayal, the vampire used to be something to fear and the sight frighten you and now they are portrayed in a romantic light most often. Perhaps when describing them as bi they are wanting you to see them as asexual giving them more a sense of mystery....
I have studied in part XTCravers type of Vampyre. My own thought...If vampyres do exist, then they will be just like humans. I think that vampyrism is just another way of life, just as shamanism or being a monk. Each way of living has its differences and perks. They also tend to have a few downs, such as sensitvity to light and the like. All should be cherished.
movies are movies, you can't really take them seriously 100% and can't expect them to be accurate all the time. they're meant for entertainment.
Profane -
I think a vampire would make an audience go OMG for much different reasons than it's sexuality. ;]
