Do you believe Biting and Stalking is a good thing or a bad thing here on the Rave?
Just curious as to why so many take it as an offensive as opposed to a compliment of interest in getting to know you.
I take it as a compliment.
i believe biting/stalking is just another way to say hello without using words.. i don't mind it much :)
I think it's an attention grabber, just to start a conversation. It's not really offensive unless it says on the profile of the bitten/stalked not to do so.
I agree with that completely --
I only use it to say hello - and only stalk friends .
To me it can go eather way, it tends to be used as a quick ice breaker. At times i do not mind it at other times it annoys me
ya i just use biteing as a quick opener lol, but i only stalk my friends and coven mates
Biting and stalking here at VR is not offensive.
I too see this as friendly greeting between members and friends here.
It is part of VR and that will not change. So people have two choices buy a pm then they can turn it off or they can self delete.
Yes i only stalk good friends.. I use bite as a way to say hello. At first i didnt understand the staling thing but it helps to know when your close friends are on and how many times they are on average.
I'm not a fan of either one, so I have them turned off. Thank you, Cancer, for allowing premium members that option!
i dont find it offensive, but find it as a conversation starter, or a way to say hello
I only like biting when I have talked to the person after a while and then to spark the convo they use a bite. But if some random person I've never even seen does it, then that's lame. They could at least say something to make it seem like they care.
I use biting as away of saying hello and I stock the people I have an interest in or someone who is my friend
Personally, I find biting to be a bit lazy as an initial hello. Rarely will I respond to a bite because if you really wanted to speak with me then you would do just that, speak, you know, with actual words and punctuation and all that fun stuff. I don't begrudge anyone biting me, who doesn't like the occasional nibble here and there, but I wouldn't personally use it as an ice breaker if you are really interested in getting to know someone.
Plus, it's extremely vexing to be waiting and waiting on an important message, then all of a sudden, alas! New Messages Waiting, eagerly click the link all to find a lousy bite message. I've been deflated this way once or twice...
I stalk all my coven members as well as some special friends. And I generally only bite when i have been bitten
Biting is ok it's a little way of saying hi and such, but what i don't like is when underage bite me. It's kinda of creepy. I wish there was a way to make it so only 18 and older can bite you.
Stalking, well it can be annoying when you don't have PM account. Because you can't see who is doing th stalking. Now that i have a PM account i don't care stalk way. But i also think you should be able to make it for 18 an older can stalk you.
perhaps a " cold shoulder" option could be arranged.
Biting can compare to a nod in a public funtion.
A gesture, there are always those who practice novice
social discovery. Ideally if a person bites you. It would be socially proper to have read the persons profile.
The quickest way to come off wrong.. Is to prematurly nip, and stammer.
I almost feel like telling people if you rate me. Bite Me. That way I can catch up on my ratings.
I like many others on here don't mind the bite/stalk feature. It is a great ice breaker. It in my opinion is a way to start a conversation with someone that could be a potential friend
That is why I have mine turned off...the stalking part I could care less about but the biting is irritating
Those two things are more like flirts than anything... I have mine turned off for a reason.
If you bite someone and then do nothing about it, then it's a lame reason...like if you're just going around and biting people...or stalking someone to get attention or to be a pain in their butt.
I use biting and stalking for my fellow coven mates as that's just how we all are, we add everyone from the coven to our friends list, bite, rate and stalk them.
As for biting and stalking other times, I only use it if it's a friend, or if we're talking and have already hit it off, then I'll do it if we've decided to add one another as friends.
wether I like it or not has no value, since the site is own by Cancer he created it, he put stalking and bitting, so there are there.
He also gave the choice to get get a "block" bites and stalking, by purchasing a premium, you can block them.
So he gave us options and choices with ways to change those options.
I find that bitting anyway is vampire related, so I would never argue with it, it is a vampire theme site, so bitting is mandatory.
Stalking too, as a vampire will stalk its prey, he/she will then be ready to suck dry its prey!
So if they were to be missing, then the site would be incomplete. A vampire without a bite and unable to stalk is not a true vampire, but a simple human.
No offence intended, if my post is hurting anyone I apologies, it is not my intent. I am simply stating how it makes me feel.
"So if they were to be missing, then the site would be incomplete. A vampire without a bite and unable to stalk is not a true vampire, but a simple human."
Since this is the internet and not real life, common sense would dictate that the whole paragraph above is flawed. Safety measures are at times mired by ignorance. Not to call the above paragraph ignorant, but stalking and biting on a site... is rather flirtatious in itself, since it is not "real life" to begin with.
Now, if the above paragraph were spoken in person and not alluding to an internet site then it would not be taken so out of context and would actually make more sense.
Since I am slowly skirting away from the whole "we are vampire" philosophy since more then half the percentage of the vampire around the world are nothing but roleplayers and lifers to begin with, then said paragraph would allude just to those who would roleplay the vampire.
Once again, Bites and Stalks could be seen as Flirts in the long run. Be careful of how they are used, since they could be easily taken out of context by those who do not know any better.
Bite, Stalk whatev.
I'm going out on a limb and using a comparison that many will detest...Facebook (insert collective groans here). I can write on a wall and say "Hey, how are you? I hope your day went well" or I can throw a sheep. Throwing sheep is faster- I like it when people throw sheep at me. It's a fun way to say hello.
I like biting and stalking and being bit and stalked. It's part of the site. I think it's fun.
VR gives a structured frame work for people to express their individuality, let their creativity flow, gain knowledge and meet new people.
Those who don't like being bit or stalked can and do get a premium membership and turn it off and/or put a preference message on their profile.
A simple "Please don’t bite or stalk me" would be sufficient but if you see fit to add in suggestions of impending threats or curses or apocalyptic doom befalling those who dare disobey your wishes, its all good , it's your profile- do with it what you please.
Some people like to email, some people like to write letters, I like to throw sheep and bite. :)
being bitten and stalks are just fun, a lot of people use a bite to say hello, there isn't any harm in it, in fact i love to see peoples bite stamps they make themselves
i hate when someone bites me and then they never say a word
I find it as a shy way to say hi, I want your attention and freindship.
I understand Roma's question though, I've seen alot of new profiles with nasty warnings in reguards to "not bite, stalk or even bother messaging them."
I skip over them completely, not even rate them as they seem to not want even that much.
I like dabbler's idea, a shoulder shrug would be cool! If you're not interested in meeting or speaking to a new person, that is!
It is what it is. Like most everything else on this site, whether perceived to be good or bad, it's what the members make of it.
Well...biting I don't mind. I prefer that people only bite me after we've at least said hi and talked a bit. Otherwise it's kind of like...what's the point. You can click a button but you can't type 2 letters?
As for the stalking. I don't really care either way whether I'm being stalked or not. I mean, I even stalk myself just so I can check certain numbers at times, lol
It doesn't really bother me what so ever and I have been known to bite on occassion, usually to the ole man or a friend, it can get rather annoying when the same person sends you bite after bite after bite and no actually conversation inbetween, so from time to time I do turn it off when that occurs. But as said above, its part of the site, it is what you make out of it.
I don't mind it at all. I just think it different people's way of initiating conversation, though myself, I'd just openly send a message. :)
It's fine, but not enough on it's own. It needs to be accompanied by actual words.
I'm shure it's to get each others attention.
don't you ever wonder..to whom may be stalking you..
and why?
got your attention didnt it?!
--
I agree,
that it's silly to keep biting one,if you never speak to them.
I don't mind biting or stalking. I only get annoyed with biting when you reply to the person and never get an answer back.. what was the point in biting me in the first place?
I don't mind biting or stalking.
It's just another way to say hello.
but sometimes people who send them take it sexual.
Which can get annoying...At least to me.
Lady horror
Historically and mythologically speaking did a vampire ask permission to bite someone... NO. But it was rare that a vampire with knowledge, power and experience would get bitten themselves.. So I think if your experienced and dont want to get bit by a vampire here, turn off biting in your account settings
I keep the bites for between friends
or sometimes i bite new members
to welcome them!
stalking i think is a personal choice
i do not stalk all the people on my friends list
maybe just the close ones
i do not mind being stalked
but it nice to be told/asked first
same with being added as a friend really
I dont mind bites b/c they're just a fun way to say Hi, but stalking is on the border of funny weird and funny haha.
I do not mind it Bitting lets me know someone saw and read my profile. Stalking lets me know that People care I come on line I am invisible a lot and I know people care to see me.
Good point xLorex, I get that all the time as well. Even after I message them.
OOOH I love to be bitten, I take it as a greeting...
As far as stalking well, that's for my coven and a few selected friends...
If you find it offensive you don't live in the real world...Have no Life and nothing else better to be annoyed with.. I feel sorry for you...
I love it is just a bit of fun I have always wonder way join a site its fun because when you think of Vampires the first thing to come to my mind its there teeth and there bite as for stalks dont have a problem with it is just a bit of fun.
I don't get bitten or stalked so I never really notice it one way or the other.
I think they are there for fun and away to greet friends and love ones. They also help grab attention to people you would like to talk to.
They are just for fun. If I don't really know someone but want to say hi or I am in a rush, I do it that way. You can't take things on the internet so seriously. I have seen people ask to not be bitten because they are taken....I just think that's taking it a bit too serious. I'm just here for fun and friends....but that's me.
I personally like the bite/stalk feature. Stalking my friend lets them know I like keeping up with them. The biting is great also my friends and I like to have mini biting wars to play around and tease each other.
I think it is a good thing and fun as well.So bite me!
(Bows)
Biting here is the custom now by vampirehood that you been visited by the vampire. Earlier I too was thinking in your line but i accepted that the visitor if bite us, this means they venerated us by biting that they liked our profile and portfolios and journal articles. Stalking is to watch the move of the person. I don't have this option so I do not use this option. but I do respect every one. coz here on VR this is vampire custom. Few of them may bite us due to vampire charm within two. in this case what your conscious allows you, You should do that.
My case - I don't use biting option coz this may harm cordial relation if I go this custom of biting. BUt I venerate the persons who bites me. and I too visit to their pages and read profiles carefully.
Might be this option kept due to one particuler section of peepal uses this and other section reply them not biting that they respected their bites by thanking them,
;)
biteing is just fun and stalking has a very important role here and if you dont know what i am talking about then you have not salked anyone on here .
Its symbolic of our lifestyle... Its a way to say hello and break the ice.. Besides it rasies the debate and gives you something to talk about
I like the biting, it is a quick way of saying hello, drawing attention. The person being bitten has the choice to respond or not. A bite can also be very intimate if both parties wish to make it so.
Have not really gotten into stalking, I think one person is stalking me, not sure who.
I prefer something a bit more personal then a bite, and the last time I had a stalker I secured a court order. Needless to say, I have both features turned off.
On occasion I will turn mine off if someone irritates me with consistent bites. Most of the time its just someone saying hello or trying to start a conversation the lazy way and like another person posted many times its used to flirt........and then some people like to bite you after they have rated you. Just a part of the site.
It's all a matter of preference...I don't mind either.
vampire theme website without bitting and stalking would be incomplet.
as vampire theme means "vampire" image, view, thinking, etch. you get the idea.
In real life I would not want to be bitten and stalk but on a vampire internet website I want it!!! I would consider vr missing an important part of it.
^^
again it seems my previous post was offensive or missinterpreted, so that is why I clarify it.
Ps I am a french speaker so I mean no offence. Previsou post was under my VampireYui profile.
I believe that it all depends. Some people find biting and stalking an intamate jesture and may take an offence to it, but I believe its fine
They are just tools for communication on the VR. I believe people become offended because their perception of biting and stalking is different than that of the sending member, at times, and at other times it is just an unwanted guesture.
I am never bothered by either stalking or biting. Thought it was all in good fun no matter which way it was intended. Biting lets me know someone is thinking of me....sometimes no words are necessary amonst friends and pets...:)
I don't mind it either. I just look at as someone say hello?
I think if you have a problem with someone biting or stalking, you should tel them you dont like it, and would prefer for them to not. Its much more polite than just blocking or ignoring someone.
I don't see an issue with biting and stalking. It's keeping with vampire lore, just as the website is intended to be. If you truly take it as offense, there are lovely Premium Memberships you can take advantage of. Or there is a delete profile option. Whichever floats your boat, I suppose.
Biting, stalking and forced inductions are just how the rave goes. I'm used to it, I don't take offense. I find it as a way to talk to people... as long as I don't receive 500 bites at once. XD
When I joined in 2006, I enjoyed using the biting function...and was flattered by being bitten. However after a while, I tended to notice that nothing else would eventuate from the biting.
Either I grew tired of initiating conversation, or it would merely be a series of bites with nothing else...I did grow weary of it.
The stalking function I use occassionally, for the most part merely for short periods out of curiosity.
To observe the behaviour of certain members that have captured interest.
Those that stalk me, do not talk to me often, and I have the feeling I am probably just one of an extensive and or forgotten list.
*shrug* doen't really matter either way...
I don't really care...
Biting stalking doesn't bother me one bit.
Just don't bite me every 5 minutes, that gets annoying.
I don't find biting or stalking offensive at all.
Some may be shy and with a bite they are initiating convo..some do it just to let you know that they rated you..why I don't know..but the stalking part we use in my coven to track members and it is a good way to see if someone is online even though they are lurking cause you can see the activity on their stalking stats. This is useful for those who run covens.
The biting is an easy hello. I generally answer the bites with hello, nice to meet you. Something short and simple. Those who want to talk will. I only use bites to bite back. I have never sent a bite myself and probably won't nor do I stalk really. I see nothing wrong with these two options and like others have stated, pay for a premium membership and turn them off if you don't like it. I don't see what all the fuss is about really. If you don't want to talk to someone who bites then ignore it.
Well i bite to say hello, not stalked anyone yet, maybe i will try it soon LOL
I agree with people who said is just a way to say hii to some one and may open a conversation and stalking is nice to know how many times and the times that the one you stalked logg in and many other nice side
I do like those
I don't believe I have bitten anyone. But have been bitten and always tell them thank you for the bite. I only stalk those I am fascinated by. If someone grabs my attention then I usually stalk to see what they will do or say next. Neither is offensive on here. Of course, off the website, if someone bite me when it was not offered or stalked me, I would probably kick their ass.
But that is just me. :)
i do not find biting or stalking offensive in any sense. I do think its part of what makes this site unique. I dont really stalk alot of people but I do bite them as a way of saying hello
i remember a time when someone constantly would NOT stop biting me over and over and it irritated me enough to block them lol i don't mind a nibble or 2 but not overly doing it. I'm glad i have the options to turn them off but so far, i havent had to :)
I think biting is a substitute for people who have trouble flirting lol. Stalking on the other hand is more flattering. Yeah it's kinda creepy but at least there is someone out there that's very interested in you lol
My thoughts on this are, If you don't like biting and stalking what the hell are you doing on a vampire site anyway? Besides it's not like you were really bitten or stalked by them anyway just because someone clicked a link. Since many people make their own personal bites it is impossible to completely stop people from biting you unless you block every single member as soon as they join, I'd hate to see the penalty for blocking 11,000+ people. btw not everyone reads your profile before they bite you! some use it as a way to let you know they rated your profile. Again not everyone reads your profile when they rate you either! With over 11,000 profiles and people trying to rate as many as possible to increase their level they are not going to read them all, lets face it people are generally lazy or no one would have invented the wheel. If you don't want to be bitten or stalked again I say what are you doing on a vampire site? You will be "bitten" on this site whether by the built in bites or personally created bites get used to it, IT HAS NO BEARING ON REAL LIFE!!! Now if someone sends you a bite and you ask them politely to not bite you anymore and they continue to do so then that would be a good use of the block button. Stalking you can turn off(if you're a PM) if it really creeps you out that much but it's not like there's any real personal info gained by it. Just my opinion this does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Vampire Rave or any of it's staff members.
I usually bite to open a conversation, or to tease a friend.
Stalking is only creepy if you don't know the person, or if it is someone you don't want to associate with.
And if a person specifically says on their profile that they don't like it, then it would be offensive to bite or stalk that person anyway.
Respect plays a part in all of it.
To be bite or to be stalk, should be an honor. Is a representation of unity within the rave. If biting or stalking were so bad, they will not be part of this site. Ahhh, and those who don't like, just turn-it-off. LOL
again a give or take option of the site, I find the bite a bit annoying but then I think that whenever I get a message at all so -chuckles- guess thats my stand.
Biting and stalking have been around since the inception of Vampire Rave and are a unique feature of the Site...and hmm, since when didn't Vampires bite and stalk! ;)
The stalking encouraged me to get a PM because I HAD to know who was stalking me. Now Im glad to be a supporting member of the dark network.
Guardian
I see it as a way to start a conversation or a attention getter. Never the less I see it to be harmless.
I don't think either of them are bad and biting is an attention grabber, but when the same person(s) just bites.. and nothing else, even when you take the initiative to start a conversation with them, and they choose to instead use biting and not words.. It can get be a tad bit annoying.
Other than that.. I bite all the time, it grabs the attention of those I am talking to and we usually end up joking about the "bite" and from there a good conversation is started.
As for stalking, I don't mind it at all, I stalk and I am being stalked, that doesn't bother me.
But if someone kindly states they would rather not be bit... I usually wont bite them.. but then again this is The Ultimate Vampire Resource and Directory... and if biting really bothers them that much... become a Premium Member- then turn off your bites. :)
I think that it makes rave more interesting, also it is an honour I think.
I rarely give a bite but I have gotten a few and I answer everyone of them with at least a hello or a return bite. This is when I usually bite. I have never thought of them as flirting but just a little hello. With all there is to do on this site it saves a lot of time rather than writing it all out. As for stalking, lol, I pay no attention to it whatsoever. If someone wants to know how often I come into the site I don't care. It's trivial information at best. It's all apart of the charm of this place. People are really defensive about these things but I don't know why. It's really inexpensive to go Premium and if it really bothers you that's your best bet and just turn it all off.
I do not understand this, to me it is for someone to start talking with someone else. and that is it. bites and stalks are part of VR and always should be.
I do not mind them...but lately I have only been getting bites from Men and younger men who only have interest in flirting with me and not really trying to get to know me. I do not block bites or stalking but...if you bite me or stalk me...at least talk to me with respect..
When I received my first 'bite' i was reading the VR manual and was on the part saying that a person can be indicted into a house/coven without prior knowledge or agreement. So, I thought that I was in a coven since someone bit me!!! then my mentor told me that it was like sending a comment on myspace. I think it's unique to the VR site and should be applauded, not discouraged.
It's not to often that I send a bite but from time to time I do and I send it to my ole man, just a way to let him know he was on my mind at the time i sent it. As fro stalking, I have a few stalkers, doesnt really bother me to much either way.
As more you stay here the biting and stalking do slow down, because only the newbies on here do it others just talk with you
