how did you find your tarro cards, and what if any rituals did you do to merge your self with the cards and to purify them? below is how i did mine
when i first selected my cards on my 18 birthday, i had a special way of finding them. i didint look look for them, but they found me when i was in a book store they were some how in the romance area, when i got them home i wrapped them in a long slik cloth and for a week kept them in my pillow, them placed them in a bowl with lavander for another week before i started to use them, this is my ritual on how to merge my self with the cards.
Wow that is actually how I did mine. I wrapped them in silk scarf and put them under my pillow.
That is the best way to chose a deck.. have them chose you..
i have no set ritual for my different tarot decks. They have all been gifts from others and i simply use them whenever they call to me. My main deck is a Celtic deck. But I also regularly use a Greek deck and a Faery Ring Oracle deck. I keep mine wrapped in velvet, save my first deck which i keep in the pouch my foreseer friend made and blessed for me.
When i have seen the decks that caught my attention i have got them and put them with some personal item of mine and wrapped them in black silk~
I was drawn to my deck . Its the witches Tarot , I also wrap them in a scarf and I have them in a small chest just sized for them and keep them in my alter drawer .
I was drawn to my first deck and they worked very well for me for many many years. When I merged with them, i did much the same as everyone else (placed in pillow wrapped in silk).
My second deck were a gift from a friend who knew me well....again these worked very very well for me. (again i placed these in pillow wrapped in silk).
My third and current deck however, are seemingly not so attuned to me. I have them stored in a box that corresponds with them incredibly well, they also have an uncanny way of letting me know they are ready. I slept on them for weeks (under my matress) and never once felt uncomfortable and suddenly one night I could not sleep as all i felt was the box under me. When i went to get them the next day they were not there. They had moved under my pillow.
I have since had them launch themselves at my fiancee a few times from a seemingly safe place on the other side of the room.
This deck however, seem not to be very descriptive, but the artwork is incredibly good. They are the egyptian Tarot and I think I have a little more work to do with them before they attune to me properly.

The easiest and best way i have found to cleanse a new deck of tarot cards it to leave them on a window sill, on a day when the moon is going to be full that way they are charged by the moonlight,...
I was always taught that a deck of tarot should be gifted. However, one could get tired of waiting for someone else to buy it for you. Since tarot is basically a focus for yourself...I'd recommend that you choose one based on how the images make you feel. One where you get a sense of comfort or belonging or just really like the images. Anything that will help you focus on them later and help you remember the meanings behind each card.
I have a collection of the Hermetic Tarot which is black and white but includes astrological signs and kabbalism in the symbols. However, I've never felt very connected to them because as an artist, I longed for better pictures. Could explain why my results were always less than satisfactory.
i have 2 that i use....one i found in some little antique shop and the other i got at a occult shop..i tend to lean towards the Egyptian deck that i have rather than the old templar knights one that i aquired.
I currently have 2 decks wich both I were drawn to the midevil deck and the Celtic Dragon. My dragon deck has a special box wich they reside after use the midevil chose a resting place and who was to recieve them since the decks are currently conflicting with each other.I know sounds weird but for some reason I am only to have one deck.
I cleans my tarot cards everytime I use them, before even thinking of anything, then once cleans I concentrate focus and the answers comes to me, clearly, so far I got 100% right *cross fingers* been doing it for a couple of years. I also had 2 decks, one was more special as it was always clear and precis regardless if I use it for me or for others, the other on I use only for certain special request, so far only used it 3 times. As to cleans them I push away the residual energy left in it out, then insert mine again new energy.
I was told that you were not supposed to buy ur own tarot cards that they should be given to you.
is this not true?
I have been reading since i was 18 and I have in my long old years of life have had a total of 6 decks and some of those actually were gifts people just handing them to me.I do not let other people touch my cards and I have a special cleansing ritual wich is not in the book that comes with the cards most people use. Also what works for me to keep the cards clear is to keep them around a quarts or an amithist crystal. Crystals have the ability to absorb negitive energyes and can recharge cards.
Its true your not suposed to but like felix stated whos going to wait around for along time till some one just hands you a deck.
and cleansing or smudging a deck is a good way to connect with it and get past all that commercial buying it deal. I think the original gift requirement probably stemmed from the desire to keep things more like a handed down art and to keep prejudice out...but since tarot is now so common and accepted...it's not truly necessary.
I never was drawn to tarot cards so my friend bought me wait for it...Titania's Fortune Cards.....oh the name kills me lol
I love em though, but didn't feel the need for ritual of any kind, just held them for a while and off I went.
I was still in high school when I was choosen by my cards.... I didn't know anything at that point, so they sat in one of my dresser drawers for a long time.... then one day I was chit chatting with a friend of mine and I got the urge to do a reading.... After that I have kept them close to me they are never more than a room away when I'm in my house and they are easily accessable(?)...
I was told once that the cards should be gifted as some of you have said in your posts and truely I don't think that's the full case.... It's nice if they are but I agree with several of you who said who wants to wait for it?... LOL...
I'm still getting to know my cards as they with me and we get along just fine... even for not doing anything with them to cleanse or fully give my energy at first... course that was in the beginning... now they are fully in tune with me...
I've been reading tarot prefessionally for over 10 years. The deck I use most? (you'll laugh) White Wolf Games' Mage: the Ascension deck. (told you you'd laugh)
I've drawn/painted 5 other decks, 4 that were based on a standard Tarochi/Rider-Waite deck, and another that is entirely my own system. These generally work best for me, but then I made them. Most people either feel like they don't have the skill or else don't want to put forth the effort and time needed tomake their own tarot cards. So choose imagery that speaks to you, something that sparks your imagination.
As far as rituals to purify the cards or attune them to me. Attunement is something I find a little unnecessary. It is really a way of getting yourself intothe right frame of mind to give a good reading--a focus for your brain. And though I have given readings for some really nasty people who have made me want to run home and take a shower, I find that the cards are still just tools, objects. If you must use rituals, you can never go wrong with a good white sage smudge though.
My first set of tarot cards were a gift from my mom. I basically just used them on myself for a while until I felt well aquainted with them.
My second deck, I bought myself, and did a little cleansing ritual because they were bought at a bookstore.
The deck I use now was also a gift from my parents, and I did a cleansing ritual followed by leaving them out under the full moon for a night (in a window from which you can see the moon just about all night, not outside).
I got the daughter's of the moon tarot cards and they work very well for me. I smudged then with sage when I got them and put them in a film case that a very close friend of mine gave me and wrapped the whole thing in a muslin cloth that my grandmother made and was passed down to my aunt then to me when my aunt passed away.
I didn't choose my Deck my deck chose me. I don't know why they did that. My deck is a very femine and shamministic deck and I enjoy working with them
I am slowly collecting a deck though Mind, Body, Spirit.
Here is a link to Llewellyn's free tarot generator. You can choose from 11 different decks and different spreads.
It is probably okay to cycle throught the decks to look at the pictures, but I wouldn't ask a question each time.Tarot Generator
You can also sign up with Llewellyn for free Tarot updates. If you don't know, Llewellyn is a big publisher of Pagan and New Age works.
i got by desk in the oddest fashion, i was looking for a book in the children spot and i found them there which was odd by itself so i bought them, for the reason wanted me to have them.
Emeleth,
Curiously enough, the last reading that I did about two years ago, was using a 'Magic the Gathering' deck.
I originally started with a reproduction on the Marseilles style. Can't remember which original design, but never got the chance to really use it. Not even sure how I got it, or what happened to it.
i had a friend but me mine n i keep it wrapped in silk in my desk but some how ill find the cards in wierd places...even if i go back n count the card before i put them away
Since I am a solitary Witch, it is very difficult to wait on someone to *gift* me with things. So I have purchased both my decks.
The first was the Witches Tarot and like many I was drawn to it. I kept waking away from it, but going right back so I finally purchased it from a Pagan Bookstore. When I got it home I also did a thorough cleansing and consecration before I used it.
The second deck is the Faerie Oracle and it was purchased for a class I co moderated. It too came from the same shop and was also thoroughly cleansed, consecrated and blessed before use.
Sort of along this line abotu tarot... Does anyone else here read cards with regular playing cards?? Both playing cards and the modern tarot developed from the same source, so I am curious...
One of the decks that has recently come to me is a vintage deck, about 20-30 years old from the seventies. It has the tarot associations, and the playing card on the card.
However all my decks tend to come to me. From friends, or students, or most recently when I was working at a thrift store, 5 sets of tarot cards i happened to spot and rescue from the trash.
I actually found my deck the egyptian deck... I was walking my dog and down in the ditch was an unopened pack of them. I put them in my pillow case for 2 weeks before actually opening them
A lot of people think that you should wait for someone to get you tarot cards, but i think it would be best to find your own cards that way you will know they are right for you, and you will not have to use cards that you do not like, because that will not help you in your readings...
The best deck of cards that matched my personality was the extended thoth deck, which, I aquired in my youth...But they work different if they are gifted then if they are purchased.
If they are gifted, then you can tell about yourself.
If they are purchased they tell of others.
My deck is the egyptian tarot although i seem to be drawn to the enochian tarot for some strange reason. I have never really worked with high magicks or celestial magicks but this one deck has held my interest for many years. Unfortunately they are incredibly hard to get hold of as there is a very specific book that goes with them that unlocks the cards properly.
My old deck was the mythic tarot, and when i got my egyptian deck i gave these to my fiancee.
I also use the ancient egyptian oracle cards. Does anyone else use them?
Thanks for the Big Up Felix..... now here is where I probably piss people off.... :-)
I don't read Tarot at all, I hate the way they have been corrupted. I read a Runic card deck for preference. I picked this deck as it looked pretty. I bought them with my own money (and had change) and I keep them either chucked in a draw at home or in my laptop case if I'm taking them to work.
I don't wrap them in silk, I don't clense them, I've never smudged them, I let other people touch them (infact encourage it, they are too pretty not to share!) and they work fantasically well for me.
The thing is as with all ritual its all about the focus of putting aside the concious mind to allow the unconcious access. Interpretation is everything, and that can only be done by stopping the concious mind getting in the way.
If you need to be surrounded in candles and incence and under a full moon to do this, then that is perfectly fine, but I like to be the one in control here, not external forces, so to me a clean table (preferably with a cloth so the cards can move better) and maybe a cigar (cause I like them) and thats me set!
I have done reading in some serous places, don't get me wrong, but it was my choice to do so instead of it being "required" (as an example I did a reading for Felix sitting dead in the centre of the Avebury Stone Circle! Great place, and handy that there is a pub right in the middle!)
The deck does not matter, its all within you, the deck is mearly a conduit. An old friend of mine for a laugh did a series of readings using chunks of circuit board! He set loose structure to things (such as a capacitor indicating a storage of energy, a Diode showing direction, that sort of thing) and sat down to do some readings. No one was more shocked them him when it worked like a charm!
The act of removing the concious mind from the equation and allowing the subcoicnous to rise to the surface, thats the key here!
Ok, now discuss! :-)
i use regular playing card for readings but my friend gave me a set of tarot cards and i only used them once
I actually have a question for whomever may be able to answer me.
My deck was bought by a family member for me as a Christmas present. When I got them, I too wrapped them in silk and slept with them under my pillow for a week (I still do, actually). My question is, does the fact that the deck was bought for me undermine it at all, or do you think that is just another way of a deck choosing it's owner in a roundabout way?
Read my previous post! :-)
Matters not either way! They are a conduit to your inner mind, how you pick them or treat them is a matter of personal preferance which only effects their ability to work for you by as much as you ALLOW it to affect YOUR ability to utilise them!
My Tarot Deck chose me. The Deck I have is called the Gendron Tarot by Melanie Gendron. It is a very beautiful deck
Druidic - I like the cigar bit
Some folks are going to want to cleanse or purify or sanctify their cards because where they came from or whether or not they bought them provide a distraction to the unconscious mind. Ritual is for the most part, a way to set aside the conscious for something deeper. Some people will require the 'mood' in order to remove distraction...others are fine with flipping a switch and just going.
I forgot the reading you gave me wasn't in fact actual tarot but the results are similar regardless of symbolism. I remember a great set of cards a friend had from back in my youth that were totem cards I think. I loved them because they were all done with animals like the Otter or the Bear and I've got an affinity with animals more than people.
i believe there are many different ways to use tarot cards in how one draws from the cards and i am curious as to what pattern everyone uses when setting them up for a reading.
Ooh, like the sound of the Totem Deck!
I use different spreads depensing upon my instincts and the question being asked.
USUALLY however it resolves around 3 cards, a primary and two to add detail. This is more to do win "that's what I've practised" then any deep symbolism, I'm used to reading them that way.
i have a little ritual just before i do a reading, but it sounds a little silly, and i won't say what, coz i'm a little superstitious, and it might break the spell if i tell.
my first set was given to me by my awakener.they have a wonderful energy about them, so he choose well.
I love tarot, i have many decks. I put mine in a box, but i have cleanse mine for i read for a friend and when he handed them back to me the negativity was so thick with him, it raised the hair on my arms. I treat my tarot as I would other objects of importantce to me. i cleanse them and store them in a velvet box. For at one time my dog got a hold of one and I had to shase the dog around until it finally dropped it.
i find myself usually going with the pyramid or cross spread although i have used others i feel i am just more comfortable with these spreads with the tarot i choose to use.
I have four decks at the moment, and will be buying another soon.
The first was the Rider-Waite deck that my friend gave me, then the Vampire Tarot, 3rd was the Druid Mini deck, and my last one so far is the Jane Austen deck.
I have to say, I am most connected to the Jane Austen deck.
As far as rituals for their up keep, I like to keep them in a patterned scarf in my little Occult cupboard. Nothing fancy, nothing major.
The Cards I have were given to me, by a good friend, A faith Healer.. he said the cards came to him, and that he had to give them to me.
I palmed the cards for days, constantly.... Then wrapped them in a white cloth.
I have two decks that work wonderfully well for me.
The first was gifted to me by my best friend on a birthday, and it's the Gothic Tarot of Vampires. Out of the two, this one works best for me. When I had received it, there was no real ritual I did, I merely wrapped it in red silk, and placed them under my pillow. I also liked to just play with them, shuffling, examining the images, just holding them.
My second deck was also given to me on a birthday by a friend. It's the Fairies' Oracle. With this one, I simply wrapped it in silk, placed it in a wooden box and left it on my bedstand for a handful of nights.
My tarot pack was given to me and I used it in mediation as this heightens ones ability to see …..
One night we were trying to raise dead spirits and things were happening … but not enough we still weren’t talking to it…. So I got my pack and read them as we questioned our summoned spirit.
Oh no I thought the next day iv ruined my pack as I kept it wrapped from harmful stuff.
I went to my teacher and asked what I could do…… she laughed.
The cards were invented around 15 century in Italy renaissance period no earlier she told me… there just like ruins stones or tea leafs … do you think they need protecting too lol
Being of chaos magic it doesn’t matter it is just a tool to help one and the tool is only as good as the skill of the user
When I used to do terro cards, I bought mine when THey drew attention to me and i cleansed them and stuck them in black silk and lavendar, and placed and item with my cards or apicture
All but one of my Tarot decks have chosen me. The one that didn't was handed down to me by my maternal great grandmother.
I will usually play with a deck, just shuffling over and over, then I'll wrap it in silk and put it in a box that I've cleansed just for my cards.
I was drawn to my deck. in fact i have 2 sets. My druid animal oricle which i use for guidance, and the Lakota Sweat lodge for issues of personal life.
Perhaps I should've said that my decks were drawn to me, like everyone else.
I've never been able to just go buy a deck. There has to be something there, something that pulls me to that deck.
...tarot cards were never meant for divination... they were a way that the templars could communicate their religious beliefs to those "with eyes to see" under the noses of the catholic church... did you know for example that the story of cinderella is a templar parable... the wicked stepmother representing mother church? Tarot, like reading tea leaves, bibliomancy etc is the projection of one's own psychic ability onto a focal point for contact to be made with the divine...
I have one deck, and it sort of fell into my lap.... I refuse to get rid of the deck, my energy is bound into it and it has not led me wrong yet
I have always let the deck chose me, and the moment I pick them up they are already attached to me. I personaly thinks its the best way to get a deck, that way you know you belong to them and they belong to you
thats very simlpe really. go with the vibe that you feel from them and pick the one that makes you the most comfy. and as far as purifying, wrap in a black cloth and place under your pillow for about one week before u use them.
My first deck I bought myself. It was the Witches Tarot deck. Sadly however, I no longer have that deck. :(
My second deck, and one that's currently hiding somewhere around the house, was gifted to me. It is the Vampire's Tarot deck. That one actually works the best for me of the two I've had.
The spread I tend to do is the Celtic cross. It seems to me that it does a better job of clarifying things than the other spreads. But that's just my opinion.
I believe in tarot cards 100% as long as they are used the right way. I have a pair of tarot cards and many say that u have to have really expensive kind to get a good reading. I dont believe that at all my cards are not the best i got them from barnes and noble on christmas. I put my faith into them and thats why they work. When i have put my energy into them they have given me a great reading. When i goof off they will give me a crazy one. My moth had a set from britain she bought when we lived there. They were very expensive. And they worked the same way myne do. The more thought the better reading the less the not as good reading. Also many people think that you need to take extra care with them and wrap them up and things like that. The first couple years i had them i didnt. They were placed in my purse, my top drawer ect. They worked the same for me. Now days they are getting older and i put them in a velvet box and for sum freak reason my mom wrapped them in a pair of my ex's silk boxers. but my mother was a firm believer in taking extra care of them. Also i will never give away my cards. I do believe that set has my energy in them. And just like a healing crystal or such u never give those away.
I rather choose my own style cards, pictures that I like, because I can understand the cards much better, but I keep them in the original box, so I dont lose them. I am a beginner, and I enjoy studying and reading books, but I have studyed Astronomy since I was young.
Im a little confused … the tarot cards were invented in the 15th century how would the templar night use them they were executed by then ?
I accually wrote a spell to claim my cards as my own and then slept with them under my pillow for three nights. I noticed after this that my cards responded to my touch in a more intense fashion. Before performing my little informal ritual, I could only feel the cards' vibrations in my fingertips, afterwards my entire hand was shaking with each card I drew.
i was told you could not purchase your own cards so my husband for my birthday gave them to me he picked them out and they have been very accurate!!
I got my deck as a gift, and the funny thing is I was drawn to them when I had seen them in the store.
I put them in a silk pouch and placed them in my bed. I have the Aleister Crowley deck, they are gorgeous, I love them. (:
Yes. It has been said that it is better you receive them as a gift, then to buy them on your own.
(:
Mine came to me via a gift, I did see them in a book store and pointed them out to my mother then completely forgot about them. And I opened a gift on Christmas day and there they were.
For mine I wrapped them in a personal scarf that I use to wear all the time, they are still wrapped in that scarf almost 20 years later.
When I first recieved the cards I use to handle them a lot looking up their meanings and doing my best to memorise each card. I did a blessing and cleansing ritual which I still use before and after each reading. It is simply I ground and cleanse myself with white light, ask the goddess to guide me and the cards, and I breath the white light over the cards. Then I fill my right hand with white light and knock on the deck 3 times to send the white light energy through the entire deck. And once feel protected I can start the reading.
Sorry it was so long to say that lol.
I do not have tarot cards but my mother does. I used to look at them for ages.. jus flicking through them with fasination. But I relly didnt get into the whole thing until this year. Now I relly want to learn about tarot cards and the whole basis of religion. I do not know how I will pick my cards... but I hope to get the right ones for me. Im thinking of doing what you did wit ur cards.. thats a good idea. Its like ur connecting with ur cards!!

I found a deck thats for me, which was the Vampire Tarot, for some reason i couldn't take my eyes off of them, they kept basically staring at me in a way. After a couple of months of us finding each other, next thing I know, my boyfriend got them for my birthday last year without my knowledge, it was weird.
I don't have any myself, but I've heard it's best to let them find you or have your tarot deck given to you, rather than going out looking for one.
i have several decks, but my favourite is the Tarot of the cat people
?? do tariot cards really work or is this just myth?? They never worked 4 me thats why I ask this Q . thanks.
The only deck I had so far was the crowley deck. It was a gift from my friend and did very well in readings. I also got this book that was like a companion to the deck, with the explanation of energies used within the cards. It also had several rituals that you can do besides readings. they all worked fine, still my curiosity lead me to coming up with my own ideas for rituals... needless to say things didn't go so well and even the readings were effected. the cards & book were promptly destroyed. (so I am forced to believe based on what I've seen. but it has to be done a certain way)
My best cartomancy deck is not tarot, it is a used regular (albeit painted) playing deck that found me at a second hand store, I did not like it for playing cards with, and spet years looking for books and people to teach me how to read with regular cards..
I have another found deck (tarot), that was given to me by my mother that she retrieved from a second hand store that she worked at. It was printed 1971 the same year as my birth. It is rider/waite and pretty generic.
The first deck I actually bought new was the hermetic tarot, made I believe by the order of the golden dawn, and is a very beautiful black and white deck with great symbolism in the images.
I have yet to make my own deck... my friend has a beautiful deck that she made herself. She collected clippings that appealed to her for 10 years out o magazines etc and made about 38 collages intuitively; every once in a while she will go through her collection of clippings and add another card. The cards have no set meaning, and are absolutely incredable... even the increadibly obtuse can devine with those cards.
ryder waite are pretty much standard, great deck for most beginners I hear
Taro cards will choose u if urminds eye is attracted to that deck . If u see many and only one keeps comming to u then thats the one which chose u.
I know I want to learn Rider Waite. I know it's the deck for because it's the only deck I'm attracted to. I haven't gotten a deck yet, but when I do it will be Rider Waite. When I have a deck, no one will be aloud to touch them but me. I will sleep with it under my pillow, wrapped in a black cloth. And i wont do tarot readings on family members. My grandmother read tarot cards and she told me if I was going to learn, those above are rules I must follow.
as i just said in the other tarot thread, i made my first deck
check this out:
http://www.angelfire.com/goth/paganslounge02lrc/tar.html
I used many type of tarot cards adliest two three times each, and found them to be quite inefficient. One day a friend showed me the Celtic tarot deck, and we were doing some readings, and those tarot cards proved to be ideal, they were accurate, truthful, easy to use, no rituals were needed in order to bond with that specific deck of tarot cards. Since that time, I always use the Celtic tarot deck.
I will place my hand over cards and see if i feel something from them if i do then i know they are for me
Lavisbre made me think how sometimes I will encircle myself with the Major Arcana and meditate. Doing the meditation I have seen some awesome meditations.
i was givin a deck by my aunt... and my other deck "found me"
I myself use those which were passed down to me. I feel that they have a more symbolic sense of feeling rather than just going out and buying new ones.
to have a deck that suits you, you need to have the cards find you, i found mine in a little magic shop, i saw them, touched them and knew they were for me and no others.
I use the Toth deck, I've got it tightly packed ... In a regular box as I don't go for the whole evocative and spiritual vibe thing.
well the first deck i was given as a gift and that is the cat peoples deck
tarot cards and runes should pick you and you not them. they also give you a special feeling when you find them and then you know that they are the ones for you
i like that there are so many speciality types of tarrot cards. you should get what you feel comfortable with, what feels good in your hands and what is pleasing to your eye. beyond that, it's all in your personal abilities.
