There are many urban myths about phantom hitchhikers. usually they go along the lines of some young man on a motorcycle sees a pretty girl hitching a lift, so he stops for her. they travel a few miles, when he suddenly notices she is no longer gripping his waist, so he stops and turns around to see she isnt there. thinking she must have fallen off, he rides up and down the road looking for her, but to no avail. eventually he calls in at the nearest police station / hospital to report the accident, only to be told that this has happened before, and that the description matches that of a girl who was killed many years ago in a crash.

there are variations of this tale all over the world - there is supposed to be one of these phantoms hitching a lift in the mersey tunnel.

in some cases, the hitcher is picked up by a car, or even a bus. there is one case on record of a bus stopping to pick up a "passenger" on Ashby road between shepshed and Coalville but when the doors open, the woman at the bus stop vanishes. it is thought this may be the same ghost that haunts the ruins of Grace Dieu Priory, though why someone who died long before buses were invented would wait at a bus stop is quite another mystery. Apparently, a motorist driving past her once slowed down, but was so shocked at seeing her suddenly vanish that he crashed into the side of a bridge - or so he claimed.

as anyone here ever picked up a phantom hitcher, or knows someone who did?

I have never personally seen such a thing, but have always been fascinated by the stories. There is even (supposedly) one around here though I have never met anyone who has even spotted him.

Not a hitch hiker , but I did come across mysterious bikes once it was a very crazy scary thing... Long raod trip .. Stopped to go to the bath room, couldnt find a place.. So me being a girl and that time of the month i HAD to stop. So me and my best friend pulled off the road, a long road with no place to stop but some old church with its door winging open...

Of coarse we go inside and yes the bathroom has to be all the way in the basement go figue.. Well when we went inside there was NOBODY there.

Me being me of coarse I must scare the piss out of my best friend, so i go hide around the corner, ya know to jump out at her when she is done...

Well as she exits the rest room we hear loud noises like motorcycles outside... So we freak out and find a tiny window to look out... To our horror there are like 10 harleys outside.. Then we hear foot steps upstairs...

We totally FREAK and ran for out lives out the door to the car... When we get outside to our car... We realize the harleys are gone.

So my thing is with one exit to this chruch that we ran the hell out of, Where did all these bikes and bikers go?

That is the oly freaky story I have hope u liked it.....

now that's odd - i've heard something similar somewhere - a ghost from pre-motorised transport days changing to adapt to new technology. it seems to be a theme amongst what can best be termed travelling ghosts. spirits who seem to be desperately trying to complete a journey they started but died before reaching their destination.

I knew this guy once who picked up this girl one night because she was hitchhiking in the rain, he said that she got in the back seat of the car and when he reached the bottom of the hill he was driving down, he said that he looked in the rear view mirror to ask the girl a question and she was gone, he said that he stoped the car and looked in the back and he even drove back up the hill to make sure she did not jump out of the car, he said that would be the last time he ever picked up another hitchhiker...

there are some that are seen by so many people, that the local police dont bother investigating anymore when someone goes to them telling of a vanishing hitchhiker. some roads have picked up a reputation for them. also quite common is cars accidentally driving through a "traveling ghost" and going back to look for a body that cant be found. there is one just north of lowestoft in Suffolk.

omg I can't believe I found this thread at the time that I did. I was actually taking my friends motercycle out for a spin when i met up with this other biker chick. We then decided to go out to a more country like place to ride together where there are less people. She told me her name and everything. So we're riding next to each other and this semi comes speeding behind us and the next thing I know we both go left and right and the semi passes (I almost got run over) when I get back into the lane I look for her and she's just completely gone. I couldn't find her or traces of the bike, so naturally I'm freaking out so I called the cops, got a ticket for riding a bike without a license wich sucked, and they wound up telling me in the end that the girl died on that very road by getting hit by a car and that they didn't appreciate my prank call.

I personally have never experienced the phantom hitchhiker, but there is an odd local story from around where I live...though it's not really a hitchhiker.

Apparently there is a back road in the town over from where I live where a young woman died a few decades ago in a car accident. Supposedly, if you drive down that road at night alone, sometimes she appears and starts chasing your car until you get off the back road and back onto the main street. I've never experienced that either...but I'd kind of like to investigate it.

On a road trip a buddy of mine and I were driving and saw a hitch hiking female. It was late and dark so we passed her. There were no other cars on the road and we turned around to go back and pick her up and she was gone when we got there. We both thought it was just our imagination and lack of sleep. We drove from Detroit, MI to Jacksonville, FL only stopping for fuel.

My friend slamed on the breaks and we jumped out buy when we got ou there was no one there. she backed the car up thinking maybe we did hit her even though we didn't hear anything and when she backed the car up there was a ribbon on the ground it was really fragile and yellowed from age. It was the weirdest night.

Never come across something like that before, but I have heard of phantom highwayman riding carriages through a persons house and the residents found out that there was a old road that the houses were build on. I heard of a Roman soldier on horseback that cuts through a pub celler in York and the land lord found out that it was a old road. I have heard about the phantom monk that wanders a busy bypass, and a lot of drivers have reported sightings of a monk appearing in front of cars and wandering around the side of the road. They found out that the bypass was build over a old monastry from Medievil times.

you wouldn't know. they don't look like ghosts - they aren't see thru, they dont have blood dripping from wounds, or look like zombies. they usually look like pretty young women (though sometimes they are male) and you might be tempted to feel sorry for someone stranded at night.

i was wondering if roads somehow psychically attract spirits - or maybe the energy trails of so many road users feed them. who knows?

Yes, I know of some married couple who had this experience. They were going back home and it was getting really late at night so they decided to go on a short cut. I know where the place they went through and there is nothing but trees and you wouldn’t be able to see a thing a night without head lights over there. But anyways as they were riding they saw a little girl just standing at the side of the road and the guy wanted to stop but the wife said to go. So he only slowed down to see what the girl had looked like and said she was kind of solid rather than seeing through her. But he said the next thing he remembered was black out. Of course that leads them to crashing into a stone wall that was built there for several years now. But that place they went through is a very old ground my grandparent tells me stories about it of which are said to be true. So to me it’s not very shocking that they had seen a ghost of some sort personally I probably wouldn’t get scared if I saw one there.

ghost stories like these are told to keep little children inside, and/or to keep people from picking up hitchhikers...

its just like in the 17th century or so with vampires... they told their kids that vampires cant come into houses unless invited in, that they grow weak around sunlight and garlic, or you can kill them by shoving a wooden stake through thier heart... these were told to keep their children from being to terrified and so that they can sleep well...

My father is the oldest of 13 children. He, my grandmother and about 5 of my aunts and uncles all told me (at different times, the same story) about one night when they were all little, my grandmother picked up a girl walking. My grandmother said all of the kids were scared to death of the girl and she could never figure out why. The girl said she was going to a place up the road a bit (I cant at the time remember where or what it was) by the time my grandmother got there, there was no one in the seat. All the kids said she just vanished. This happened in New Jersey at least 30 years ago.

I have never, and not that I can recall, nor has anyone that I know ever picked up a phantom hitchhiker, but there is supposedly one in front of a small rural graveyard about eight miles North of East Grand Forks, Minn. The phantom appears on foggy nights and so far, as the story goes, has only appeared when the car, truck, motorcycle, or bus does not have any male passenger's. There have been several reportings to the EGF Police and County Sheriff's about one or more women stopping to pick up a man about 6 feet tall with a very thin build in front of this cemetary, and gets in the vehicle with them, and then makes some "wierd" sounds and then vanish's right before their eyes. Needless to say, the women involved come close to "relieving" themselves and have to pull off of the road to calm themselves. I have also heard of phantom cars and driver's picking up hitchhiker's and while giving them a ride, tell them that what they are doing is right or wrong and tips on what to do to succeed or change in their ways. After the rider gets dropped off, the driver says that he/she is going back to where they just came from and turns the vehicle around and drives a short distance before disappearing from the road. my uncle once saw a phantom bus. he was driving late one night and saw what appeared to be a crashed bus, so drove to the nearest police station to report the accident. he was told that a bus did crash on the spot he described - several years earlier, and since then someone reports seeing a crashed bus on that spot every year on the anniversary of the crash. he drove back, adamant that it was a real bus - but couldn't find it again.

here is another story i found on the internet..

Phantom Hitchhikers have become somewhat of a more common occurrence in the late 90's. Supposedly they are spirits of those who have fallen victim to automobile tragedies, spirits that haunt that very location where they were killed. Many reports have come forward, claiming that a hitchhiker was picked up around an area where a fatal accident occurred, only for the hitchhiker to disappear from the vehicle just down the road. Some instances involve many fatal accidents on the same stretch of highway where phantom hitchhikers are known to appear.

One case involves a young girl, known only as Resurrection Mary. She was supposedly killed as the result of being struck by an automobile on a hitchhike home, after being dropped off by her boyfriend due to a quarrel. Five years afterwards, her apparition began to appear, asking motorists for a ride to the ballroom, or the cemetery. She would disappear from the vehicle halfway down the road. Another case took place in Cape Province, South Africa. An army Corporal offered a young woman a lift home on his motorbike. He gave her a helmet and an earpiece to listen to the radio to on the way. Ten miles down the road, his back tire spun out, and so he stopped to see whether or not he had a flat. When he turned around, the young girl was gone. She could not have fallen off, for the helmet was tied to the passenger seat, and the radio earpiece was in his left ear.

Cases of Phantom Hitchhikers continue to rise. One small town even has a road sign with the figure of a ghost to warn motorists of a phantom hitchhiker that has been reported to have caused many accidents in the area, some fatal. The cases seem to take place heavily in Australia and South Africa, as well as the western United States. But every country has its own Phantom Hitchhiker, and as time goes by, their numbers will rise.

I dont doubt that this is possible. Esp if its late at night adn these drivers are exhausted. Not that they might be dreaming, but the frame of mind when u are that tired makes the mind more vulnerable to seeing those things. I believe it totally can happen. I have never had this experience but Im sure those accounts were made for a reason...

The first of these stories I ever heard about was actually in a Reader's Digest than my grandparents had when I was a kid. I believe it was the girl in the prom dress story. When the boy went to her house her mom told him she had died on prom night a few years before. The sweater he had loaned her ended up folded up on his car seat when he returned.

true - hitching is definitely dying out. i've not done it in over ten years, and it's very rare to see someone hitching by the roadside now. 15 or 20 years ago it was quite common. i think the stories are told and retold though. legends never die.

i wonder if the hitchhiker ghosts will just give up and fade away, or find another means of getting from a to b? maybe they will get more forceful, and simply materialize on the back seat of moving vehicles. anyone hear of that yet?

I wonder if it could be the area that is haunted and so attracts the spirits to appear there

No, I've not seen anything like that, & if I have, I've not noticed.

I'm not silly enough to even contemplate picking up a hitchhiker.

I've heard many of these urban legends & I dont doubt them

I suppose if you beleive in ghosts or banshees that a phantom hitchhiker could happen.
So may people die on roads I think a ghostly apparition by the road would be a possible occurence. I see those roadside crosses all the time and it makes me think about it.

There have been stories for years near where I grew up of a girl hitching a ride home and when they cross the railroad tracks, she disappears. The car that picked her up first tried to beat the train and they were both killed.

I have heard of a hitchhiker dressed in bluejeans, and a bluejean jacket being picked up along Illinois route 1, then vanishing from the car that picked him up. One of the people who had stopped to give this guy a ride was a police officer, who, just like everybody else, then went back, looking for the guy along the road, only to find nothing.

I guess even wandering souls sometimes get tired of walking, and prefer to ride. I do have to wonder why these poor souls are forever wandering our roads. Do they seek help for a wrongful death, or seek to leave a message for loved ones, or even homicide detectives? I guess we'll never know, but it does make life a little spicier, doesn't it?

Then there is always Ressurection Mary, from Ressurection Cemetary in Justice/Argo Illinois, who has been seen by many wandering around the graveyard there.

I have a friend who has seen her many times on his way to work at a grocery store in the area. He rides his bike past the cemetary weekly, and has seen her at least ten times.

There is a song called Phantom 309 by Red Sovine that is about a similar type incident but it is the hitchhiker that gets picked up by the "phantom" in the song. I personally have never experienced such a thing. Though when I was in college I did have a spirit that would travel with me a lot and was even witnessed by some of my friends.

In many ways this adds to the parental lecture to not pick up hitch hikers. They could be a seriel killer or even a ghost. Either which way, I'm not going to be picking up any strangers for a drive.

theres one for the peak districk in england where I live...so I've been told.
if you go down a long road at night I forgot the road name (somthing hill) and your in emotional distress, a woman will be seen on the side of the road and will get in the car and speak to you about your problems till they are sorted and since the road is long, if you turn off it before the end she will disapear, but if you carry on the road she will stay in the car untill the very end, get out and then disapear.
