Here's the thing on immortality..or my view on it. Immortality means endless life...so that right there counts out and vampires, for vampires can die if exposed to uv rays or what ever your beliefs are on how a vampyres die but either way they die. To be immortal is to never be alive, for then you can never die. Or is there somthing that is alive and will live forever, even beyond the end of time for the living thing could never die to be immortal. Maybe I am wrong...please correct me if I am
That is one way to look at it. Sometimes though the mistake is looking at immortality and invincibility as the same thing.
For instance if we get into Norse Mythology it is said the gods were immortal but they could be killed they could also age if they didn't eat the apples that kept them young.
In some sense it is immortality if you do not die of natural causes. Hence murder or being killed by some other means isn't natural.
I don't believe in the immortal vampires thing.
For me they're people like me.
i agree with nitegrl
but immortality..sure it could be possible, i mean in ancient days a human could live no longer than 40 years
now people have made it to 130, who says immortality is very far away
i understand that immortality is a state for the 'soul' rather than that of the body.. i was under the impression that that was a thing of holywood.
daeg.
Well I have two comments for this thread.
1) BloodGod, you bring up a good point, but don't forget Methusula, who lived 999 Years, I like your point of view, because it that light, it does seem that as time goes by man gets closer to immortality just by the nature of life span.
2) My point of view is that memories can serve as immortality. One can't truly be forgotten because the reside in other peoples memory.
that is also a very good point, thinking of someone forever is immortality
like jesus is immortal, sadly, gheghe
And even those who believe in souls beleive that we are immortal.
Blood God, Good One, I don't know how I missed that one, well I havent been to church in years lol
Someone lived 999 years?
But anyway I still don't think that a long life is immortality.
They still die so they're not immortal.
deathnitegrl yes, I can't remember which book of the old testement it is in, but Methusula lived 999 years.
Oh here is another thought, how about the Redwood, and other trees that live thousands of years?
actually no, to be immortal is only to not die, if you look at it from a purely spiritual stand point then we are all immortal since the spirit lives on regardless and in point as long as they are not killed the vampire is immortal in the physical since the soul has left the body
Wait wait,the old testament...
Don't forget that at those times years were calculated differently.
For example the 30 years of now they were 100-400 years of now am not sure about the exact number.
But am sure about the calculating thing.I learned this from Religious classes at school.
So those 999 years can be much less.
not by enough to get it under 100
besides anything is possible, most things are only improbable.. do you really want to live forever here?
well depending on your religion immortality is a way of life...
think about this..the belief in reincarnation..your soul lives on into the next life...isnt that living on forever? your soul never dies..it continues on to its next life...its only your body that doesnt make it ...
Immortality for me is dying and coming back to this life in different years.. a cycle sort of .. which not everyone is able or needs to do..
immortality to me is not to die. as in vampyres it's myth but maybe some organisms (plants, viruses, bacteriae) are, i dont know
Immortality... I think it would be an interesting way.... But it is really possible? I mean, physically, I think it could be achieved (complex genetic solutions); what I am not clear at all, being confused ba Hollywood, are vampires immortal? I mean, they can be killed, but do they not age at all?
Firstly, Methuselah reportedly lived to be 926 years. Just clearing that up.
It could be theoretically possible to sustain life for hundreds of years, if the body was kept in absolutely perfect health, but there is still chromosome damage done every time a cell splits, so eventually, the body will become too damaged to survive.
Which is also recorded in the Bible - Which in my oppinion really is just the first proof that weed existed back then too - Too many things dont add up, nor seem possible in the slightest way
Immortality...Wow, big subject. I have my own beliefs so here goes. I believe that all life has to do with energy. Our souls as some put are merely concentrated energy and our bodies, made of different energy, hold that in. When we die, our energy can no longer be contained by our bodies and flows out into all things, thus creating new life and reicarnation of some sort. I think when people remember past lives, they are seeing some places and times from the old energy that they were created out of. I believe to be immortal, one must find a way to keep this energy. To harness it so it does not leak out. I think this is possible if someone would only be able to come up with how. Maybe will power, or concentration, or spells or just a good diet and exercise. i dont know, but i think it is possible and to the original post, How can you say it is endless life and yet say that the person is not living? That is my only question about that. But that is what I believe.
Oh yeah and I forgot about jesus. Jesus was immortal in the sense I was talking about, yes but in the whole godly sense, that only works if you believe it. I personally do not think jesus was god or son of god or what not. He was a person who led the life he thought was supposed to, the way he thought he should. People wrote down things and the rest is history, but that is just my personal view on the jesus thing.
I believe that Science will make possible human immortality.
I was reading a very interesting article about the cancer cells, how they can be the key to imortality. Cancer cells never die. They live for ever. Scientists are working on it.
http://www.theage.com.au/news/Science/Cancer-cells-may-hold-the-key-to-immortality/2005/03/18/1111085974393.htmly
In my opinion being immortal would mean never dying ever and I don't think that is possible for anyone. I also don't feel that the correct term for vampires was immortal. I think the correct term would have been reanimated. But everyone has their own opinion on this matter.

I do not believe in immortality- yet... I believe it is very possible to happen in the future. Science is a many splendored thing.
And back to Methuselah- He actually lived to be 969 years only, many back then lived hundreds of years because of the belief that since they we early descendants of Adam and Eve who ate from the Tree Of Life in Eden... generations and generations removed didn't have such a long lifespan. Adam himself lived to be 930--- go to Genesis 5 and read the numerous folks who lived to be centuries old. But still, not immortality.
"Words- Although they are only breath, Words Which I command are Immortal"- Sappho
Oops. I should have read before posting a numerical figure. Haven't looked in the bible in years.
Immortality maybe possible through gene manipulation and selective breeding.
Methuselah lived much less... In that time, a year was measured differently, so he didn`t live that long! Chromosome errors and destruction could be corrected through viral genetic mutations...
If you believe in the existance of souls, we all are immortal already! Our temporary vessels of flesh may decay but as astral bodies of energy we simply travel on.
As much as I enjoy my present form of existance I wouldn't want it to last forever, there are just too many unanswered questions that would drive me mad in time if I physically was immortal.
I can agree moreorless with the last poster. Thoug I disagree that eternity of even the stral form is automatic. It's my belief that to maintain conscious immortality you must maintain the etheric body with supplementation, as it primary source of energy has ceased to be functional. If not, then we risk the Second Death which comes in the form of spiritual unrraveling at which point we return to the great melding part that is the cosmos. :)

Immortality is like the government. It contradicts its self.

I belive that immortality is IMPOSSIBLE no matter what you are you are human...as we are in the vampire world we may drink blood or take energy and stay inside but that dose not mean that we are immortal for we are just human with vampire desires/needs. We are human just with different veiws as normal humans. So in my conclusion we are just humans that have vampire traits basicly.
just going to throw my 2 cents in here, while immortality seems to be grand and the whole not dieing thing attracts a lot of people. i personally thing that the human mind has not yet reached a level where it could deal with the endlessness of immortality, the neverending cycle would drive people mad, well at least thats what i think, and in the case of vampires, well some might see it as a gift, i perfer to look at it as a curse, to never die, trapped inside a dead body.
I'm going to reassert the position that physical immortality is an absolutely ridiculous I idea. I really don't see how anyone here can think we're going to cheat nature on a cellular level forever.

I've allways felt that true Immortality exists in the sense that people still think, speak, are reminded of you. LaurentiusManx made a p[oint similar to this a while up on the discussion. If people write stories about you, sing songs about you, have pictures of you around then you could be labeled as Immortal.
I beleive that a spirit lives on in the hearts of whom they have touched. One can live as long as memory is served be it good or bad. I think a few others have posted similar comments.
i dont belive anything is immortal. memeries are not immortal becase people are always forgotten if only for a secound.
the only thing that stays the same is that everything changes
I do not believe in immortality, But I do believe that with care and certain ways.. one can extend his or her life.. whereas a normal person would live to be anywhere from 65-90 for example. It might be possible to make a person live to be say 150 if one is careful with their bodyand keeps it in the top possible shape.
for me no one is immortall.. we all that dwell on this earth will die one day and thats a fact.... but i guess or at least i believe that our souls are immortal... i dont know what will happen after we die, but in every cutlure since the first sign of human being has appeared by human hands they believed that souls are immortal and so do i...
Immortality is about as possible as you or me flying without the aid of a plane. Helicopter or other aviation device
I agree with Evangius on the whole immortality issue. I think immortality is directed to the fact that natural causes or just plain time has no effect on you. Could be possible from a scientific and metaphysical point of view. It's all about how fast our bodies regenerate lost tissue. That includes skin, brain, lungs, everything must be replaced as quickly as they are destroyed.
if it was possiable..i dont think i would want it..i wouldn't want to watch everyone around me dying..or seeing the world fade into nothing because of the way that the people are handling or treating the world today.
The quality or condition of being immortal.
Endless life or existence.
Enduring fame.
although im sure it would fun to see the bad people be tomrmented..and treated like trash..as they treat other people..lol
I believe that no one is immortal as where there is life there is death!
Although l must say LaurentiusManx makes a good point
i believe that everyone who dies is reincarnated so in a sense they are immortal but i believe everone has to die to return so in a sense they are not as conflicting as that may be
One reason why I wouldn't think it could ever be seen my humans eyes is the mear fact that it can bring lot of attention, pressure and/or jelosy if anyone where to be in factinmortal. My opinion is, no inmortality cannot be riched at the very least not in this world.
Imortality is possible...think of all the examples from the Bible when the human average lifespan was for hundreds of years. Considering that science is constantly advancing and that at the moment we have the technology and the knowledge to extend our lives, why not in the future to be imortal? According to an italian scientist by 23rd century immortality will be acieved and i see it possible considering all the nanotechnology we are developing and the stem cells we are trying to create:)
Of course there is always a more spiritual approach to it but i think most of you covered it very well.
no it isn't possible. you can aproach to the end of the world with your spirit but you cant' be immortal.... not even vampires.
There's a different in Imortality and being Eternal. Imortality means that you live forever with weakness hence the (weaknesses) Eternal beings live without fear of death or weaknesses.
I myself believe in a totally different idea of the Imortality which you speak of as a Vampire. This flesh is just that flesh, your body will die but your energy returns to the collective until needed once more. Sort of like a type of reincarnation only within the same present existence just on a different plane...
Want to know more just ask me and I'll be glad to explain my words.
To be immortal, means to exsist forever. Time would have no effect of whatever it is that is immortal. until we understand what it is to be alive or to truely be dead, we may never know what true immortality is.
There Ant Noway In Hell That You Can Never Die Everyone Is Going To Die Sooner Or Later No Matter If Your A Human Or A Vampire Or Anything Else For That Matter.
i think it's possible in a spiritual sense, but not in a physical sense.
My Energy is immortal...It has always been and always will be...Time is a paradox...Bodies are just shells...
I believe that as being human we cannot be immortal, but when we die our soul will supposibly live on. In my opinion our soul's are immortal not us as being humans.
nothing can be imortal for even if we could live forever we would go insane in the changeing times and be unable to grasp the conecept of new things
Immortality is the ability of one to exist without dying of natural causes. Those that have awakened to understand their existance as energy know that they are immortal, for energy never dissapates, it just changes form.
Though the body dies and decays, the conciousness carries on.
i believe we all could be immortal if we wanted to.....just my thought on it
Interrestingly put. 'If we wanted to." Why would someone choose to just not exist any longer? hmmmmm.
Imortality can be achived. it´s like cancer. every cell has it´s own clock. it controls how fast that cell will duplicate. if the clock is reset to zero the cell will duplicate out of controll. that´s how cancertumors evolve. but, if you can reset the clock in every cell of your body and then make them die as fast as they duplicate, imortality is reached. You would actually heal in a matter of seconds if you were to cut yourself. and you would only age to an certain age then you would stop, still alive, only looking abot 25-30 years old. because thats when you cells start to decompose because of oxygen, but that won´t happend because your cell constantly renews themselfs...i´m So smart XD
Well met! I do know of the loss and pain and burdon you speak of. But to have outlived your mate of choosing.. some many times over is just another experience for the books. It does hurt to loose someone so close to you. Especially over and over. After a while though you learn to accept it as the fact of existance that it is. But to live immortal, would also mean to know all emotions more intimately that those of the mortal realm ever could.. a much deeper understanding. I personally, don't see that as a reason to cease to exist... then again.. that's just me and my perspective =D
i think its a matter of perspective.
a fruit fly lives 4 days. so to it, we would seem to be immortal.
with us, i like the redwood tree example.. living thousands of years.. so they would be immortal to us.
Immortality is only an illusion for the ego to strive for.
i agree with larry4rock....
Vampires aren't immortal, they only cheat death. The humans are immortal only through their soul.
In the game of life, time will always win and death will prevail.
"On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero."
it is my belief that ones soul is immortal, the body may perish, the soul lives on. As time progresses, humans have managed to increase life span, but this is for the body. The soul has always lived, and shall continue so.
but think about it. DO you really want to live forever?Sure it is cool to know you can see the future, but all you family and friends are going to die. Yes you can make more friends, only to watch them die.
And if it is anything like highlander, you'll be cursed with at least 4 flashbacks every half hour.
For anyone one interested. A reall good book very interesting. Breaking the Death Habit, The Science of Everlasting life by Leonard Orr its a papper back very short read only 135 pages. Has techniques, many of which I've incorporated into my daily life.
immortality is more like the ability to live for ever, not being unable to die or be killed. Invulnerability or invinciblility is where you can't be hurt or killed, thats like superman or something..... to me immortality is the ability to have an indefinite life span as long as you dont get killed, or it could be where you could die in a specific way but no other way.... to be immortal in the sense that you're saying would be like being god
even if immortality were possible, would you want to watch everyone you care about or will care about die. knowing that no matter what you will always be a lone.
i think it could be possible but not in this life time but to be immortal you would indeed half to be a god or goddess but to reach that at this point in time is not impossiable but improbable
My understanding of the definition of immortality is to live forever....never to die, in the traditional sense. And, because I believe that when a person experiences deja vu, they're actually remember past life experiences....which brings me to the belief in reincarnation. The fact that there are those who possess abilities that are far and above those of their peers....like the child of age 2 who can somehow play Mozart on the piano with no prior training whatsoever....leads me to believe they have inherited a soul which possessed that talent. Not just "any" soul, however, but that which they possessed before....in a former life...which they possessed in an even earlier former life....and so forth (or is that so "back") and so on. We're drawn to people because we were drawn to them then...and will continue to be drawn to them in our upcoming lives. I guess the point I'm trying to get across is that I believe we are all immortal, at least as far as our souls are concerned.
"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" :)
If in the pyshical sense then I am not sure but spiritually I think so.
I woudl liek to believe that one may live on forever physically. But I do believe that Immortality does exist in the afterlife.
through our kids we live forever our memories and characteristics we pass on to them and then the cycle repetes it self again and again and thats what i realy think immortality is
Immortality has been interpreted in a gazillion ways!!
BUT, none, to my knowledge, has achieved it.
let me just ask you this.. do you beleive your soul moves on or dies with you? (to those that have one) in all in all your soul is immortal but as far as living as we are at this moment.. no such thing, it's a spiratual state
i believe in rebirth so in that way arent we all immortal?? our souls will never die, only change where they live...a bit like moving house every now and then...but id still love to live forever in the form i am in...so i hope there is such a thing...but i dont believe in invincability, every single thing in this world can be killed in some way otherwise how would all the gods before us have died?
I beleive the same lestat.. and it would be fun to live forever though, but then again it would suck if you were the only one that could....
Who says that living forever is immortality? Immortality, to me anyway, is the memory of a loved one, or even an enemy, for you always remember them.
Again, *anything* is possible, within reason. That's my opinion at least, lol. Vampires can indeed die under specific circumstances, therefore they cannot be immortal.
Immortality, is very possible, but only to those who can grasp both the power of the light and the dark, grasp it, but put no feeling toward either. To grasp that power and smother its emotions, you will find the center, and in that is Immortality.
You have an intersting view on the subject, Death. A god one at that.
extreme longevity, certainly.
immortality, no. anything can be destroyed
I always say the term Immortality as not so much living forever but more as being with out death.....as in your immortal soul is your undying soul.....
Matter changes it's forms but is never destroyed.
the same for energy.
your body is matter but does not stay in that combination of matter and energy for ever,
however if matter and energy simply change and are never destroyed cud we also follow this pattern?
this gives rise to the possibility of reincarnation.
If we "come back" as wot we once were and if we cud store who we are noe (possibly electronically) then we cud simply put the stored consciousness into the new form of ourselves and we cud live on like this forever.
I just don't get it at all, religion, immortality, 996 years, someone please tell me. Does it really matter what one person call immortality compared to the next.
Immortality could be possible, but only spiritually
An immortal soul can roam the plain of the living, yet it cannot take physical form. It exist outside of our realm
since time immemorial the quest has been on to extend, and prolong physical life, it is the stuff of fiction myth and legend, and the final aim of all alchemical investigation, the fabled philosophers stone
whether by an internal purification or as in the vampiric legend by consuming the life essence of another , or by consuming alchemically prepared substances, mercury for instance, the aim of extending mortal life for the serious practitioner was essentially to remain in the same body for a longer period of time in order to resolve karma, something that can only be done in a human body, much of necromancy is also based around this concept, the notion of moving from body to body , to keep the movement on,
since birth erases memory of past karma, and by the time one realise some of what one needs to do, one is already 30 something , and has but another 30 or 40 years to go out of which perhaps 20 would be with a perfectly healthy body
extending life also allows for power and abilities gained by ritual and penance to accumulate in the same body, like a battery of sorts
the alchemical, internal and external search is for something known as Amrita
it is a glandular secretion, cerebrospinal fluid, the stuff that halos are made of, a larger concentration of Amrita adds to the halo and aura of an individual,
celibacy, much restriction and continous purification of the body allow for Amrita to permeate through it
I do not belive in imortality.
A thing taht people has to understand is that we vampires, are in a human body, and there is absolutley nothing we can do to stop mother Nature.
there has been a theory that says that one could lengthen life, by constantly adding fresh blood to the human body.
This is, unfortunatley not true either, and I think, because of this theory, many people associate vampirism and imortality
No clue... I think all things die..... Some things just may live longer then others.
It is possible if you add the gods into that category...well actually they can die too i guess... maybe it's impossible
In some circles of thought you achieve immortality through your children
I don't think immortality in a physical sence is possible , but to have your name live on is . I would hate to live and grow while my loved ones died around me tc
Well anything is possible, so I vote in a sence it could be possible, but I rank it right up there with Big Foot and God, possible...but not likely. I think its just a hollywood extra.
I agree with you on the Immortality thing I think its inpossuble for anythig to live forevere.
I don't think anything can possibly live forever. Something could, possibly, live for an unfathomable amount of time, but what is forever but that?
I don't think there is any true "forever" in this universe, just a lot of insanely high (to put it lightly) numbers. And thus no true immortality.
Immortality is a heavily argued subject. Some say it makes you completely invulnerable to everything. Nothing harms you at all.
However, others believe that, you just cant die of the everyday stuff. I'm pretty sure someone has said this already to you...but yeah....thats pretty much how I learned it.
Great Kings, leaders and psychopaths have tried through out history and yet death does find them.
Well immortality in my opinion is something which can´t be achieved that easy...longer life...yes! But immortality i don´t think so...
i think the its the body that cant take the duration of time as the mind and spirit will go without pause
We are just flesh and will die on this earth....but we have a soul and will live on.....so we never actually die.....just our bodies crumble....We were not meant to die....wherever your going is up to you....
Who knows? There have been tribes who've claimed to be immortal, and know the secret of eternal life.
But, immortality can also be a religious aspect, as well. People of the christian faith believe they have eternal life in the after life. As well as other religions, too.
I believe it really just depends of your perception of life, religion, and history.
I find it possible for immortality to be real, but what most are thinking of is the ability to heal and not die from the ticking of time. But dieing from like the sun and so on is ways of dieing as the old saying goes "What can be given life can have it taken away." just some don't go with time.
Its written into your DNA how many times your cells will be able to divide in your lifetime. The only exception to this is Cancer. Now, if we decided instead of looking for a cure for cancer, to harness it so that the cells keep dividing and regenerating, then yes, it is scientifically possible.
the definition of immortal is: not conforming to accepted standards of morality
meaning if it can die in any way shape or form it is not immortal. To my knowledge there is no living thing that cannot die but you also have to think that earthlings have limited technology at this point in time. Now immortality is impossible but who knows what our future may hold.
