This has been on my mind for some time, well actually, for over a year now.

I have noticed that a simple touch can keep a person from killing themselves, that something as little as a hug can change a whole day, and that people who are unafraid of touching and being touched are generally happier. I tried to do some research on this, and found nothing scientific to back up what I've observed.

My question to everyone here is:

Do you find that touching and being touched makes you happier? If so, do you feel it is a spiritual connection or something else?

Please be detailed in your responses, k?

I believe that touch does have power.

I know that I was very un-open to touch for quite a long period in my life. I would clench up in anticipation of anothers touch, almost as if I was in a defensive posture.

Now that I am more open to touch I see manifold benifits. And not just from sensual / intamate toch from my wife. Also from hand shakes, pats on the back etc.

I don't know if it is just from the physical touch, or some energy transfer that accompanies the touch, butI certainly think there is much power in the act.

The power of touch is very immense to me. Such things as massage have always been incredibly important to our health and I believe touch and energy flowing through touch helps.

I wish I knew more on this subject...

Scientific.....They can fill volumns of information that science will only scoff at.

Anyway two things have to exist in order for a "touch to work"

1. The person in distress must really want to be heard or helped with all of their physical and mental being.

2 The person who touches with the care of someone who is actually interested in that persons problems, their deepest feelings and emotional content, must really believe in themselves and their truth of wanting to help.

Emotions are a powerful weapon you can help, heal, or hurt someone if you know how to manipulate the energy that drives a particular emotion.
Since the body has an aura around it, and that aura is what reflects what is inside of the individual, the type of energy that the person generates at a particular time or on a constant, it is also reflecting the inner energy, the chi if you will, of that person, the healing energy that works not only on the physical body but the emotional state as well.
Words can heal, a touch can heal all of it comes from the positive energy generated from within. We are natural healers if we put our minds to do so there is nothing we can not do.

Me too!!!

Like I said above... I can't seem to find anything about it. If someone else can find something, they should mention it.

I first thought of it when I spent two hours in the boy's room with a friend simply holding his hand. He told me later he probably would have killed himself if I hadn't been there.

In another case, when my ex broke up with me, I was so heartbroken and having my friends hold me helped a lot.

I believe that people, especially Americans, seem to become more and more skittish as they grow older, and as a result, they rely more and more on antidepressents. My idea is that adults simply don't touch each other enough.

By touch I simply mean physical contact in any form.

touching can do a lot for a person, even if maybe they dont think they want it. it can make them feel cared for which can do wonders for a person. we in general are creatures that need to be touched whether it be a lovers touch, a mothers touch or simply a casual touch such as a handshake, it is something that we crave from as young as infancy, babies that are touched and heldthrive more than babies that are not touched or held, and that has been proven.

I feel that touch in one of the basic human needs. Babies that are held and coddled often are happier children which in turn grow to be happier adults.
Touch can say so much. I saw a study on chimpanzees one baby was held and touched on a regular basis and another was not handled at all a third was given a stuffed animal to cuddle. The first thrived and grew strong and well adjusted the second died and the third was sickly and weak. Touch is a vital part of our well being.

Lamia, I remember that one, but for some reason I felt that didn't adress my question.

What I was kind of looking for is, since touch in infancy and childhood has been proven to be necessary, why don't adults touch so much? What makes people stop touching each other once they're older?

It seems to me that a group of four year olds will incessantly touch, wheras a group of forty year olds will barely touch at all unless they are touching a spouse. The question IO arrived at was Why don't people touch as much?

Touch is powerful both positive and negative. Not just for any kind of energy transfer, but just the touch of a friend in a hug or handshake or a touch to the back or anyplace, does much to convey positive feelings and strengthen bonds; not to mention just letting someone know they are cared and thought about.

who knew, a post that I could actually lend some expertise to. Touch is something I am studying right now ( don't gt pervertd on me now) I am getting my associates in theraputic masage and accupreassure. Eastern practices have held the value of touch for centuries on many levels. Energy work with preassure points can lend relief to a rainbow of ailments that drugs alone are not very adept with.
Psychological issues especially, depression, anxiety, touch can be more effective than prozac and paxil and everything else being marketed as a cure for the blues.
Part of this has been researches and linked back to the fact that human beings are herd animals. It is in our nature to live in groups rather than be solitary. Like primates. Touch provides a tangible link to eachother. It reinforces family bonds and was a survival tool.
Even today,in a world where you could live without never having real contact with another person for days, weeks, the effects of living in such a solitary way would be noticable.
Children who do not recieve frequent touching as reassurance from their parents grow up without firm bonds of attatchment and tend to have lot sof behavioral issues that follow them all teir livs. They have a hard time connecting with other people in their adult lives and generally don't thrive socially. Lack of touch makes people generally un happy.
Studies have enen shown that infant chimps taken from their mothers and not afforded touch but provided everything else they need to live die after prolonged periods.
So don't be shy, pat a friend on the back, rest your hand on their shoulder when they are down, give hugs to the people you are close to. Seal deals with hand shakes, build business relationships on the same premise of touch.
uhh...just be kinda carefull of where you touch, lol, or you get labled a pervert.
And for crying out loud if you have kids give them all the hugs and cuddles and hand holding they can take because in the long run they might roll their eyes at you as teens, but you will know that you gave them a goodstart at mental ad social health and well being.

This is quite facinating. I've always been really interested in the art of healing through touch.

Touch is a vital part of contact with another being, not just humans, I'm sure most of us have noticed the effect it can have on animals as well. not all animals mind you hah...

Oh.. and... I agree with birra about agreeing with me when it comes to agreeing with KCRC.

I am pretty much with everyone here, and must say that I have learned a lot so far. I just had a tidbit to share with everyone, something cool that I came across on youtube that has everything to do with this thread. It's a video of the Hugs Campaign, it's to music, but the jist of the video is that they are trying to brighten up peoples day by giving them a hug, and fighting to be able to do it. Here's the link.

You asked “What I was kind of looking for is, since touch in infancy and childhood has been proven to be necessary, why don't adults touch so much? What makes people stop touching each other once they're older?”

Speaking as someone over 40 who does not like having my space invaded by unwanted physical touching I can only give you my theory. By the time adulthood is reached most of us have learned that while comfort can come from touching so can pain. Not just from spanking but few reach adulthood without someone, somewhere having physically assaulted them. It may be as simple as a sibling fight or the neighborhood bully beating you up. I won’t go into child abuse issues but they may also be present. My point is you will have much more evidence to support not being touched as being “safer” than being touched. As an adult, I want to choose whom by and when I am touched and in what manner, well at least to the best of my ability.
Again this is but my opinion as to why older folks are less happy to be touched.

That being said I do not argue that touch is powerful and often craved but I think it has more to do with the control of the touching that affects people.

its really too bad that adults dont touch more often, but with the sue happy society that we live in, many people misconstrue the elemnt of touch as something sexual instead of compassion or healing. it really is sad that such a stigma has been place on something that makes a child thrive and happy would only make sense that it would do the same for an adult.

Touch is a very powerful thing. A simple hug from a stranger can mean so much and make a person cheer up a lot! We crave attention and as humans we have to have the human contact, well we want it, whether we admit it or not. When someone pats you on the back for a job well done, does it not feel like you are appreciated? And when someone comforts you by holding you as you are crying or down, does it not show another person cares?

Touch is very meaningful. It can both hurt and harm. In terms of healing, I think of masseuses (massage professionals, have not a clue if I spelled that correctly.. I'm really kinda drunk and wasted :) )

The power of touch can calm the mind and spirit. It can also cause fear and trembling in the form of a strike or a punch. Those who are deprived of a loving touch become emotionally detached from their world. They lack emotions and that emotional attachment that love provides. A touch can speak a thousand words.

As a secondary thought, touch heals a thousand wounds. I think that touch evokes the strongest emotions because it is the sense that is the most rarely experienced in terms of contacting another human being on an emotional level. Touch implies a degree of attachment and friendliness. The sensation affords the feelings of acceptance and love towards another. It is the sensation that seals an agreement in the form of a handshake and seals respect and affection in a hug or a kiss.

I believe in the power of touch and I really don't believe it has anything to do with science. It has to do with showing to someone you really care about him and unerstand him. I believe a connection is formed then. It helps psychologically the other person to endure the bad things and have hope....

Also i have noticed that when you are touching someone you pass on energy to him. A gentle touch gives the other person some of your positive energy...

I have noticed that since I was trying to relief my closest friends from their pain... I concetrated on giving them some of my positive energy to take out all the negative they had and it worked...

Nagini:

You say it has nothing to do with science and then state at the root of touch's effectiveness is energy transfer. Energy and how it behaves is the basis of all physical sciences. There fore, theoretically, the effect and means of touch's manifestation can be explained by science IF it is studied with an open mind.

BTW: I wish I was tipsy like Jenova.

I also agree with Morigon that Birra agrees with her in her agreement with me.

Ok, but in response to the idea put-forth about hugging strangers... not in this day and age. Depending on who you hug you're likely to get punched in the face (not good touching there) or have the cops called on you.

I can just see me hugging every attractive woman I see as I travel... I'd be in jail by the end of the first day.

Devina:

I agree with you...To a point.

Positively intentiond caring touch is usually percievid as helpful and welcomed by those in a "normal" state of mind.

To those who are filled with negativity and self-loathing, even the most well meant touch can still be interpreted and felt as a negative, repulsive thing to shy away from. I know this as I was once in that state of mind and felt that way.

Should that stop the "toucher"? I don't think so. Eventually, the "touchee" will come to their senses and realize that you were trying to help. Your outreach, though rejected at the time, will be seen as a bright spot in the gloom.

words can only go so far to a person who is in need of something more....like the saying goes "words fall upon deaf ears" but a touch sends something straight to the heart if you ask me. even if they push it away it still has connected with that person that your their and are concerned about them. And thats where the brain starts to rethink all of their issues. Just by the simpliest of touch can turn the deadly situation into a tear jerking warm moment. Touch is powerful but can also do harm if used wrongly. I won't go into to much detail upon wrong touch. But it does hold power either way.

I know that being a victim of physical abuse from a young age made me cringe from physical touch from most people because I understood touch to mean pain and I wanted no part of it. I still cringe from time to time unless I know the person but I think that I have moved past it all to some degree. I think I still have a ways to go but I feel deep down with I am close to someone and being held by them that I feel safer and happier. Its a sense of utter and total security and peace

It depends on the person. Most will welcome a gentle touch as affirmation or reassurance. There are those, however, for whatever reason it may be (and I respect them), that do not feel comfortable with the same touch. It may trigger some uncomfortable memory or cause them to go defensive. For the most part, I like a gentle touch from most people, but there is a certain area that is off limits, even to those closest to me and I am not talking about the private area either.

I have been told that I have a healing touch. Most humans crave the touch of another. But there are some out there that hate it or are affaid of it. I guess it really has do with the person. But I have found that for the most part that a single hug or a hand on a shoulder can be very powerful.

P@M,
You had mentioned looking around for scientific or scholarly articles to help in your research, I thought this might be a helpful start. The link takes you right to the abstract, but you can download the full PDF text as well. What I found particularly fascinating about this article is the implication that "touch avoidance" can be addictive, so this might provide an interesting dimension to your research. Interesting topic, good luck with your studies.

it is a fact that premature babies are more likely to survive and do better when they are touched and caressed by the nurses and volunteers who care for them-
I personally have found that when I touched someone at the bar in which I was working, and sensed something was wrong, the person was more likmely to share what it was that was bothering them after I touched them and as a result, usually felt better.

It seems like everyone agrees, that touch is a powerful thing. I like to think that the loving presence of another person's energy fields, liking with another's can help to balance the one being touched. When i'm hugging another person, i like to go to the right side of their head, so our hearts press together, hugging 'heart to heart'. I've never had a bad day keep going after a good hug, or even sometimes a touch on the hand. Studies have shown, that people like librarians best who touch the other person's hand while exchanging a book. The same applies for quite a few situations. people should hug more...

Well I have noticed that a simple touch can improve my day. I don't think it has anything to do with a spiritual connection though. I just think that it has something to do with the subconcious wanting attention. Physical attention, mostly.

well for me its much better to be touched. action speaks louder than words, and if you hug or connect with someone through touching, you can show to him that you really care and love him.

it could also be that the energy we posses is transferred to that person through touching abnd that makes the other person happier

I would have to agree with so many of you touch is a powerful thing and yes it can help or hurt... theres a comfort in a hug or a light touch just letting someone know your there but it is very sad nowa days you touch a sranger to comfort them its taken the worng way... I think alot is over the year society changes and little thing get blown into bigger things... if i run into a stranger that you can tell really need someone... I will ask if there ok and sit and talk to them if they want to talk... but touching someone i dont know just seem wrong and I worry would be taken wrong!

Touch for me has always been my strongest sense. and as a kid i always wanted hugs form my mum and sisters and father and fmaily. Even to this dya im the same way. i hug everybody just bc i love the feleing of being enveloped in their arms, and feeling lvoed and being ok.....sometimes its th eonly way i really know they love me.
It does make me feel happy but in the other sense, it also allows me to let my emotions flow easier. If im on the verge of tears, fighting to keep them away, a hug or a hand on the shoulder will send me over the edge and i'll bawl lol
having a Physical connection with someone to me is just as important as an emotional one too.

Touch has a big effect on everyone. If I'm not in contact with people for long amounts of time I tend to become depressed. Kind of feels like no ones there for you. But when someone puts a hand on my shoulder or hugs me it's like "Wow.. there are people that really care about me".

Indeed a touch can save a life, if not physical a mental life.
They did a test at an orphonage, they would leave the same baby at the end of the row of the baby cribs in the sleeping room for at least 1 month. They discover that that baby was happier, eated better, made better naps and in general was in better health then the one at the start of the row. They tried to figure out, when they caugh the cleaning woman on night, she was holding the baby, craddle it and kissing its forhead. She admit doing that every night for a couple of hours after her cleaning was done.

This proove that the touch of this woman made difference int he baby,s life, so her touhc prooved that it does has its important and that it can make a diference and can change someone,s life.

The power of touch will always be important and strong. Simply because it reminds us we are human, it is a moment where you are apart of something greater than yourself. From a baby to an elderly adult we all need human touch to give us that sense of security we all need to survive.

And like everyone, I always feel great when I get a hug from a loved one. Because someone is letting me know that I am important and mean something.

We as Humans, Vamp, other, are social creatures and as such need the connection of others. I believe that the lack of physical contact can and does contribute to physical illness, mental decline, anti-social behavior (stealing, lying), and many other problems. Those who shy away from touch are unhappy, depressed individuals as a rule. There are always exceptions of course. It is a proven fact that married couples who regularly engage in sex into their sixty's, seventy's and on live longer with fewer problems than single, widowed or divorced older people. Just my thoughts.

I don't really like to have my little bubble violated, even if I am a 'touch' kind of person.

however, simple gestures like handshakes, hugs, or pats (you know, nothing overboard) can really make a difference to a person!

Glad your friend is still around.

indeed touch is very powerful. i simply can't have a good day without hugging and hanging all over my friends. i need to feel wanted in order to go on in life. reaching out to someone even smiling at someone rather then rushing past them can change the world. the person who you smile at might decide to say hi to someone at work because there in a better mood and then that person might call there spouse to tell them they love them and then there spouse might call there mother and tell her that they love her. then there mother might go and visit her husbands grave and lay fresh flowers there and she might meet a man about her age sitting on a bench while walking past the park and she might sit and talk to him and have peace in her life.

Touch is and has always been very therapuetiuc in many ways. I am a nurse, and truly I see it every day. Just a simply touch on the arm, or pat of the hand, to connect with that person.Even for a moment, helps, in a way it shows them they are not alone.
There is touch assoicated with energy healing and so on, Reiki for one.But aside from that, touch is almost a forgotten gesture of human contact.

Sevenn I'll be reading that article shortly, but first I want to respond to this.

Thank you guys so much for the amounts of information!

I have read studies that pets are very important to single people, since they provide a sort of companionship. Pets have always seemed to play a role in the lives of fairly seclusive people. I'm picturing the classic dogs around a hunter or the dog sledders (is that a word?).

I have good reason to dislike being touched (mostly by guys, sorry.), but I find that when I am upset, I don't really care who is touching me, just that I feel that sense of solidity.

I'd like to ask those who are uncomfortable with touch, do you want that to change? Do you feel something is missing? Everyone seems to agree that touch is important, so those of you who shy away from it, do you simultaneously crave it as well? or do you simply not miss it and have no desire to change that?

It's scientifically proven that babies that are touched more--held, played with, etc--grow faster and have fewer problems than other babies.

Also, D.O.s (as comparable to M.D.s) are doctors that rely on touch over chemicals & drugs; granted, they will prescribe medication to you, but their practice doesn't rely as much on the medication as an M.D.'s.

Our culture is so increadibly touch deprived it makes me wonder what gives our culture the right to determine how much we are touched by others.

The more decayed our culture is the less we are touched spntaneously by others. Every invention in the last 100 years seams to contribute to personal space and false barriers that create ways to be touched less. TV, Central Heating, modern Architecture, Modern cooking practices, seperate bedrooms for children etc etc.

It may be that to be touched is culture, or rather that the ceremonies that lead to being touched is culture. Any activities that directly lead to not being touched (ie watching tv, modern medicine) are not actually cultural but anticultural.

yes i think it does its like a smile if you see it you generally tend to smile back. A hug can represent a caring nature that comforts.a kiss love or maby a game. what im trying to say is it all depends on what the touch is like a person who is abused most of their lives like most of us are a little sketchy when someone reaches out to us but when we get a hug or whatever its that comfort that gives us that whatever it is...

touch means a lot for me, but i can't just be touched by anyone... and for that matter the type of touch makes a huge difference
i can feel when what a touch means, comforting, sexual, friendly, casual etc and it takes the right kind of touch at the right moment for it to affect me
most of the time a touch that says ' i know your're upset, without you saying it and i care' will affect me the most as those usually happen when i don't even realize i'm upset and need it. there are very few people intune with me enough for both of us to know exactly what kind of touching means the most in any given situation but we are very close

I personally am not too keen on the whole Idea of being touched only because I know that it is an energy tap. We as social animals have incorporated the sense of touch into each and every one of our developement as children.

Another reasonable explination from another perspective is that our nervous systems are actuated by electrical impulses...... as infants our systems need all the sensory imput as possible to better develope.... as the elderly we are unable to generate as much as earlier in our lives ....so both need the extra touch/ transferr of electricity.... touching is good... touch the elderly and the very young often.

Billy, is this a newly published book, or a fairly uncommon one?

I did my research a year ago and discovered there was very little done, since I was researching how it affected adults instead of children. Some people are skittish due to abuse (as I was until I decided I was not going to live in fear any more), but I feel that there was also a connection with society. I was looking for something documented that would help me conduct my research. I spent weeks online and in libraries looking for material, and couldn't find anything that related well enough. In the end I took the failing grade on the project since it was too late to change topics.

I did find one book that talked about the kinds of touch (the meanings of clapping, the six different ways to give a hug, the significance of each kind of kiss, etc.), I could not read it, it was beyong dull and did not give any suggestions as to why society is so afraid of touching now.

The book that I was referring too was: "Infant Massage, the power of touch." I learned about it in massage school. There is also a book that is called, "the power of touch." There is also massage places called by the same name. Really don't understand why you had any trouble with this topic. It is a very basic subject in nursing school. Any nurse will help you with this topic as will any massage therapist.

If you want to learn why people are afraid of touch, try psychology books about "creating boundaries." You will see a difference between personal boundaries and the healing touch. Two different subjects but they may be similar. Good luck with your research

I think that whenever someone touches you or someone hugs you it makes you feel special. like there is someone in the whole wide world who cares about you. Also it shows that they are not afraid of you or the at they don't wanna touch you. so in theory they believe that they are gonna be ok.

I have a book here at home (german translation of course) by Kathleen Keating: "The Hug Therapy Book" (Hazelden Foundation since 1995?)

It may in no way be scientific, but hey, the words in there are true. And it helps a lot.
The physical warmth and touch together with the spiritual connection shares strength and joy alike.
If we humans really have some kind of inner batterie thus hugging is like a jump start in winter.

Also a hug can be initializing an inner chain reaction. It is literally spoken like smiling to your self in front of a mirror. Once started you won't stop! =)

But always, always have in mind, that maybe fellow beeings just do not want to be touched. Be it because they just never experienced the benefits or they have other reasons, respect it and leave them be. If you force a touch it is not only a violation of personal space but may even be mistaken as an attack, thus you will receive a hurting response.
I but had good experiences showing my point of view and listening into the other being (if there is enough time for) to get a catch of what blocks them. As written above, sometimes it needs just an initial to overcome the fears and then the hole thing flowes just by itself.

*hugs you, if you like to*

I believe touch is very powerful, and not from a sexual point of view.
I myself am a touch addict. I love to touch people. My favorite thing, which may seem a little hokey are cuddle groups, a big group of people just laying in a pile like puppies. Its heaven for me, but for me it kinda back fires. Because of my job its not a very touch friendly enviroment, so it kinda makes me afraid to touch people, I don't think they'd understand, its not sexual, its just a need for contact.

I think a single touch can be the thin line between life and death.

Billy was right about the emergency, when we are ina terrible danger or holding by a thread our life, a touch can make a big difference. It can save lifes, a woman in labor will find it lest hard (I had 3 so I know the pain and all) then a woman left on her own and not holding a hand, a child in fear will feel more secure if someone hold his hand when he has to be treated, also a person in recovery will make faster progress then one left alone in a corner. It was even proven ppl in comas are affected, a touch can be very powerful.

Meeper, I was thought of "Kiss me" by Sixpence None The Richer when tyou said "Touch me".

Something that has been inspired since I last posted...

Does "internet touching" count as touching? Meaning, when I type ^returns the hugs^, does that count as a touch since it was the act of a touch, only imagined instead of physical? Can the thought of someone touching you mean that same as the actual physical deed?
