From viewing many previous posts and profiles I know that a lot of you enjoy going to the goth clubs that are your area. I have started saving money to get a club up and running in a couple of years.

So I was wondering what kind of environment do you look for when you go to a goth club? Why do you keep going back? Do they have themes or are they plain? Answers would be greatly appreciated.

A goth club would be considered a themed club being that it is a goth club and not just any club I would think. :)

Well since I am a Head bouncer at a club here in the city I rest in. I say it is a better place then just a regular club. It is a "dark club" not a regular one.

You wanted constructive answers, right? You want to keep a goth club open and bringing the people in?

Mirrors around the dance flor.
Pillars of some sort, stone or painted to look like stone.
An area that is a bit grungie. Ie: chainlink fences and exposed brick.
Theme nights. Ie: 80's, Punk, early gothic, and ren-fair type stuff.

It all depends on what kind of"people you want to attract.

Also a big thing considering that is what will be the main course of music you'll be playing there.
That will definately attract or discourage people.

The have one in Chicago, where I presently am now called Neo's.That has 3 different type of rooms, which I really enjoy.2 have bands, one the heavy goth, metal type and the other one upstairs more old type rock and rock. One room seems to attract old school rockers, punk types.Another more vampirish,Cure makeup, fangs, black leather, capes, and the like. And the 3rd seems to be more mundane and less threatening atmosphere, there is more lighting and located towards the front of the pub, mostly for tourists who just want to stare at the people inside*grins*
I really like the 3 rooms idea, one can go from place to place and kinda talk to all different types of people.

We go to an awesome club in Philadelphia called Shadowland which is "Run BY Goths, FOR Goths". Some of the things that make it successful, in my opinion.

1) The music. They have two awesome DJ's, on for the main dance floor, and one for a lounge area in another room. They both are very friendly and open for requests, but play different music. The dance floor DJ palys louder and only dancable music, while the "lounge" DJ plays more ethereal and contemplative stuff. Both are very knowledgable about the music and are more than willing to chat while working.

2) The layout. As I mentioned, the club has two distinct areas, a lively dance floor area, and a more quite lounge area. Plenty of room to either dance and watch or to chill and talk.

3) The club has a "Dress Code". The area the club is in is a very trendy eclectic place (Off South Street in Philly). The area is a mecca for all culures, but the Hip Hop crowd is not too interested in the Goth scene. The preppy, frat boy crowd, however, sometimes are of a mind to come gawk at the Goths. So the club does not let in anyone who does not 'look the part". That is, unless they know you or you are with someone they know. They understand that we all have "real lives" and can't always dress how we wish. The "regulars" can get in no matter how they are dressed. The stranger had beter look the part or the managemnt is wary.

4) Friendly staff. The owner, security , cashier and especially the bar staff are awesome. Always chatting it up with folks. They especially go out of their way to get to know new folks. They try to get to know you and get you together with people who you might share interests, etc.

5) Location, location, location. Try to find an area where your potential patrons will be ANYWAY.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

Good Music, the louder the better. A great bartender. I go to this one club JUST because of the bartender. He's cute, makes a great drink and has a great personality. Great Decor. Mirrors, lights, secluded tables to sit and chat. Drink Specials!! And munchies. You start drinking and you need popcorn or chips or something.

You are right MamaDog.

Shadowlands has an AWSOME bartendress. It helps that she is drop dead beautiful and dresses in amazing outfits, but she's super friendly and makes a great (strong) drink.

And the other thing you touched on...Munchies, they have plent of bowls of chips, pretzels and cheese doodles plus..CANDY is a must! mmmmm candy!

First off, good luck in your biz ventures!

The main things I look for in a 'good' club:

1-accessibility
2-the ability to see the dance floor, and sit down if I need..
3. a dance floor that isn't too tiny.
4-bathrooms that you don't mind actually using
5-Friendly staff that might allow a little rowdiness, but keeps the real chaos to a minimum (even in the midst of a hard set).
6-A bit of variety

Lighting...

Red Lights are better than blacklights... some blacklights are cool. Most people don't appreciate fog machines... they are ok if they are on the floor but breathing that shit sucks.

From a business point of view, you should not keep all the tourests out. but you should kleep them in control. Good doormen are nessesary.

One thing That I love is black and white movies being played on the wall or continuous loop film... or other such things. Morbid displays of some kind are nesseary... a wall made to look liek skulls and bones or a library of books.

A room where the goths can escape the tourests would be VERY nice.

The one that I've gone to hosts a vampire ball where they throw in a waltz here and there which is fab to me. There are also two levels so that the dance music is downstairs and upstairs it's ambient, dark, and has booths to socialize. They're also on an off night to avoid the weekenders that may be there to gawk.

I LOVE loud music. It should be dark (not much light), with a designated dance floor, where one can go to feel noticed, but not feel like the center of attention. The music is a big thing. It needs to be a good constant music, not really fast in one part, with a pause in another. It drives me nuts when there's a pause in the music. If there is to be a pause in the tempo PLEASE keep some rhythm in it so people don't just stop dancing. (I'm done with my rant now^_^)

If you want to have a successful "goth" clb, as many people said, music choice is a big factor...also, you don't want the place looking "proper". you don't want it looking like a dining hall, but rather worn.

I have been to Goth clubs all over the country. There are many different flavors. It depends on what you want to pursue and what your perspective clientèle is.

There is A LOT of cross-over when it comes to Goth clubs. Goths get along very well in the gay scene. One of my favorite nights is a Darkwave night at a Gay bar here in Phoenix.

I also sometimes go to Gay bars when there is no "Goth" music or theme. I can dress in full attire and makeup and have a great time at a Gay bar. I get a lot of respect and attention at Gay clubs.

Then there is the other end of the spectrum, the power-noise and rivethead crowd (not to be confused with Punk... very different scene). I get along fine in those scenes too, but it's much more hardcore.

There is a lot of crossover in music. "Goth" can be anything from Gothic, Gothic Rock, Gothic Metal, Darkwave, Dark 80s, Synthpop, EBM, IBM, Electro-clash, Industrial, Power Noise, to many other forms of music. Most full-time Goth clubs have different music themed nights.

The only thing I can suggest, is that if it is possible, have a strict dress code. Most club owners don't enforce a dress code due to fear of profit loss. There are no dress codes at any of the clubs in Phoenix and in my opinion, it hurts the scene.

Transylvania, the area's most popular Goth night (400+ people per Friday), has no dress code. There is a college bar next door. College kids in jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, and backward baseball caps come in to, "look at the pretty goth girls and hopefully catch a few make out."

It hurts the scene.

You should turn anyone away that is not dressed for the night.

The L.A. clubs have forced dress codes and they have lines around the building.

Dark paths is a brillant place thats got to be my fav of all 3...they have a themed night every friday (best costume gets a prize...either a free bottle of bubblie or vouchers)...then from 10pm - 12pm is death hour...drinks are two for 1...they have a massive lay out...down stairs is the dance floor & upstairs is the seating area with their own lil cubiles & curtains for privacy! Costs about £50 per month for membership but its well bloody worth it!!

what i look for in a club, is comfort. an enviornment that is easy to look at, and provides a good energy. good music. lots of alcohol.

as for what kind of music... well it depends on the kind of club. when im in a dancy mood, i go to a certain place. when im in an industrial mood i go to a different place. so if u wanted to have avariety of people and be sure that ur club is full every night... i would make each night a differnt genre.

the goth club near me has an 80's night. a rap night. and most of the other nights are industrial. but they mix it up a little.

hope that gives u some ideas.

(i would look for 2 stories, that way there can be a balcony and a winding staircase. :o) )

"The Church" here in Dallas is great. First of all, the DJ. Someone who knows great industrial music, great gothic dance music and a variety 80's goth and anything to get a wide range of goths involved and coming back.

Aside from that. The atmosphere is great. Two floors, 4 rooms. Red velvet couches everywhere, all the seats with tables are also lined in velvet. Dancing poles, a stage above the dance floor and a higher level on each side of two small round dancing areas.

They have a huge gothic style screen in which they show the most gruesome moments in horror movies, lots of blood, sex and murder. All the good stuff. They have 2 main rooms, each with a DJ playing a very different kind of music to please everyone.

Walls are lined with old stained glass, a huge chandelier hangs above the center of the main dance floor. It "IS" a goth club, and a great one at that. ;)=

Theres a branch of nightclubs around England called Heaven & Hell.

There really good...The Heaven room is pop music and 80's, the decor with blue clouds, blue carpet etc

Hell has flames inside the bar with cages, red carpet, flame decor that plays goth, rock, and dance music

The only dress codes we have here is no jeans, and no sneakers / caps ...Men have to be wearing black trousers & smart shoes.

I wouldnt really like a dress code to get into a club besides from the above

Well… Cancer and KcRc did give some good input.
And I’m just adding to that.

First of all, the music and the vibe is what everyone looks for. There are a lot of spears coming out of the industrial scene and if you want to attract all the scene rats, it would be a great idea to spilt it in sections if finances permit :

One floor for Industrial, IBM, Electro-clash and Power Noise
And the second floor for Sythpop, Futurepop, Darkwave, Dark 80s, EBM.

If the population of the industrial scene isn’t that big just go with one floor and have some dj’s with extensive knowledge mix it all up depending on what’s working for the night.

The environment: Besides a good location just as the fancy attracts a few, the raw look works even better for most places. As dark and dim as possible like you’re in an unused building or a factory, lights, strobes and such, throw in a couple of cages and a stage for decent bands to perform if you’re thinking big.

Post again with your thoughts and I’ll reply.

I used to run a couple of clubs over the years in England. Yes theme nights are great I had student night Thursday, rave’s Friday, dance sat and chill out Sunday, got to see your target market and support the nights they can go out to spend.
Strong and quick response to trouble makers, remove them out fast.
I had 2 girls taking admission on the door who loved me, they would also tell on each other over to gain favor so I lost no money there.
Your bar is where you make the money it is also a nightmare keeping them all from robbing you.
I used to organize gay nights rubber nights S&M nights on the off nights, do start a data base to keep your target market and have free be stuff, every one loves a bargain.
Tshirts of your club recordings of the night burnt to multiple CD’s for sale as they leave.
Beware of gangsters, if you must then work with the biggest, they will deal in your club and a lot more protective and clean if they are on your side.

I go for the music....have to have a good mix of both gothic and industrial to mix up my dancing...some soft...some energizing.
Depending on what DJ plays, will usually decide where I go

A good goth club would have to have the right atmosphere, dark, the right music, themes like ghosts or vampires... dark corners, etc. That would be a good goth club to me. Somewhere I can sit back and observe.

All these ideas sound good..we have one or two little goth clubs around here..they are not just goth..not a big enough scene here for that. They have an 80's night, and other themed nights. The one I go to, The Wave, is a gay bar most of the week. Thats great! I mainly go for the music, to dance and talk to friends. I never go to drink..I understand they make most of their money at the bar, I just hate seeing drunks lol. Metal floors, barred mirrored wall behind the dance floor, places to sit, a smaller bar and lounge in the back, pool tables, a small outdoor area, darker lighting..all things I look for. Good luck in your venture..I hope it works out!!

We don't have any "clubs" where I live, goth or otherwise. We have bars/meat-markets.

If someone were to bring a club to this town, I wouldn't necessarily want it to be a "goth" club - that seems too exclusive of others who might not consider themselves goth, but would like to go to a club.

I'd like to see a good mix of music. I'm eclectic, so my club should be too. Don't be afraid to play ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. I'd like a place that has an area off to the side that's a bit more quiet so that people can relax and chat.

I'd like to see decent drink prices - without being stingy with the alcohol. I'm a Bloody Mary girl myself - those aren't always good at restaurants and they're expensive!

As for decor? Well, let's not go overboard. I'm a minimalist, myself. Black walls and floors with a red ceiling, perhaps? Nothing too over the top, though. If it's too over the top, some people might not want to come around.

Indeed Cancer.
‘’ Future pop is not synth-pop on steroids! ‘’. You’ll probably recognize that quote by Ronan.

As for Theme nights… I never hosted any but they do work for you even though they were never a personal favorite of mine.

XDominique, If you’d be coming to the U.K make sure to pay a visit to Slimelight London. You won’t be disappointed if you’re into the scene.

I think it should give choice, somewhere noisy to get down with your bad self what what...

And a kind of VIP area, which is quieter where people can get drunk and talk religion and philosophy, which they alway do, at great length with added dribbling and sputtering.

Also very very very cheap drinks, and lots of (easy) strippers.

Tranzylvania is the prettiest goth night here in Phoenix. The club is beautiful, but as Cancer said, there's no dress code and we end up with the frat boy idiots in the club, gawking at and hitting on the girls.

Bar Sinister in Hollywood has a tiered cover charge, based on how you're dressed. If you're dressed properly for the club, the cover is $10.00. If you're dressed like a college goober who just happened to stumble by, the cover is $20.00. Not many people want to fork over $20.00, so it definitely keeps out the yucks. And I don't think it's hurting the club...it gets so packed you can't get to the bar for a drink after midnight.

Atmosphere is very important...as important as the music. And if the music is played loudly, there need to be areas in the club where people can sit and talk without yelling...either outdoor patio or separate rooms that are less noisy (or both).

Staff needs to understand that the typical goth club patron will not cause problems. I had a night I promoted here in Phoenix for 2-1/2 years (ReQuiem) and our bouncer never once had to break up a fight...not once. But he also filtered the people who came in and if they didn't look like they belonged, they didn't come in or were told what to expect and to respect the patrons.

Also, if you live in a town with a smoking ban (like we now have in AZ). you'd want to be sure there's an outdoor area where people can have their drinks and have a smoke, so an outdoor patio would kill two birds with one stone (quiet place to talk and/or smoke).

Having themed nights would be a very good idea if you're going to have a club that caters to what we once called the Underground or Alternative scene. 80's Alternative, punk, old school goth, etc.

I've taken up enough of this post, so I'll stop there.

OMG, network, network, network! I say this to make a point: I used to hang out at this lil, tiny goth club in Nashville called the Asylum. Like I said, it was small, but the people that ran it were sooooo client-oriented. Like others before me have said, they really went out of their way to get to know their patrons. They were so friendly and personable, not that fake just-get-you-in-the-door bullshit either. They really wanted to know that you were enjoying yourself, and what's more, they wanted to know YOU as an individual.

On the other side of the networking thing, even though the club was teeny weeny, because of the business prowess of the owner, he still managed to pull in live acts like Seraphim Shock (whom I SO saw and hung out with!!!!). Make getting to know people and putting yourself out there your business. It'll pay off!

Best of luck, babes!

OK.. I have read this entire thread and It has some fantastic views....

My view is that there are a wide variety of 'goths' from the new Romantic types.. right to the EBM types.. also a Wide age range.

From what i have seen with clubs I have been to (slimelight in london, Being one of the LONGEST running alternative/goth clubs ever run)
People like to be able to sit and relax away from the music.. perhaps a chill-out room.
as they tend to go along an socialize as well as go to absorb the music. Goths are a minority in UK, so tend to relish the connectivity with other 'goths'.
Full length Mirrors in the toilets/rest romms would be a MUST, as they tend to be Really serious about their attire & makeup.
I have seen many TV's and cross-dressers at these clubs so it needs to encourage a relaxed atmosphere and non-judgemental staff IS A MUST!
You'll never completely be able to clear clubs of drugs.. But if you progress a random search on the door.. it does make for a decent deterrant. or at least, make them hide it in a FAR better place!
Theme Nights is a great Idea... themeing it on the music... it'd haul the goth 'types' in to the club.. and perhaps become a regular jaunt for them.

cages seems REALLY popular with the EBM scene.. the girls and guys use them.. and poles for Goth Pole-Dancers..
The toilets in Slimelight are Unisex.. which adds comfort to the 'relaxed' gender scene...
Frommy experiences there, I have Not ONCE experienced any trouble with aggressive behaviour nor drugs.
it has 4 rooms with different music in each room. and a tea room adjaceant to it for 'afterwards' that opens from 7am.
and almost EVERYONE looks like Alice Cooper in there by that time!!
LOL

The best club that i've been to hell is as i said above...but i went to one in holland & it took my breath away...The outside is normal & plain but the inside is designed like a real 1700's castle...the chairs, the bar, the tables, the decor etc..everything...right down to the glasses you use...the music is a mix of goth, thrash, metal, heavy rock, heavy metal, etc...some people do dress up in the traditional 1700's dress code but most are dressed in black red purple etc...it cost 25 euro to get in & drinks are half price for the first hour...you do get a stamp which is of a werewolve in arms...very tasty...!

Definitely a dress code, and either different rooms playing different music or different things on different nights.

As far as decor goes, it depends on whether you want a dance club or a bar/club. If it's the former, then i would suggest a couple of poles, a mosh pit and some podiums. If it's the latter however you will need to pay more attention as people will be there to meet up and talk, so it should look classy, expensive and nice

I have been to many clubs but my favorite had to be this one in FL because it didn't even have a roof to the building. It just had some kind plastic and it was cold because it was the beginning of winter. So I don't think looks have anything to do with the clubs I choose. I tend to like wide open spaces like warehouses where I actually have room to jump around. And more than one bar is always good. The dj has to have his own stage. and it would be kool to have a separate stage to have the hotties dance. I think its the crowd that make the clubs succesful. If you have a good crowd then it should all be good.

there is a club near me, which i have not been there in ages due to me outgrowing the club scene.
though for a very successful club you need to cater for all types.
an upstairs and a downstairs building would be great.
you could then cater for the goths downstairs with the usual bar, music, dance floor etc....
and the upstairs for 60's, 70's, 80's music, bar, and dance floor. etc
the more you cater for the more people you will attract = bigger income = greater success

Ambience is a huge factor is a good club but I couldn't tell you how to make that work unless one saw the building where it would go. I think scouting the right location is extremely important for a successful club.

Likely, if your like most club hosts, you would be renting the space for a night from a club or bar that runs other music on other nights instead of purchasing a location outright. If you can actually purchase a place, then the same scouting should of course be considered but you'll be faced with added costs based on location, neighborhood and size.

Back to ambience. It's really about using the form and style of the building and enhancing it's natural features. You wouldn't turn a dive bar into a castle and you wouldn't take a castle and open a country bar. So learn how to see the inherent features of a location. Look for features like open beams, brick or cement walls, what kind of windows you'll have and more to decide on lighting and decoration. Pay the expense for a few good quality enhancements as opposed to a lot of cheap ones.

Finally, less is always more. If you can use the features of the location and rely less on decorative add ons, you can not only create a more solid and stable 'look' but it can aid you in choosing the theme or nature of your club (ie, if you are stuck in a dive bar with low ceilings and wood paneled walls, then call it the coffin club and enhance that cramped wooden feel)

I think that Cancer brought up a good point...the gawking factor. There will always be those who want "to come look at the pretty goth girls" etc etc lol. So, there are a couple of things to think about in that department alone, both of them relating to clientele.

Do you WANT those people there? Yeah, yeah. Other people brought up dress code, culling out those that that don't belong at the door. If you don't plan on making your place so very Goth-exclusive, then you need to consider:

1) If you allow general population in, is the WHOLE club going to be general admission, or are there going to be Goth-exclusive sections? Or, is that too much to keep up with?

2) Is it more important to you to rake in the extra income from those "regular" people who come by to check out "that Goth place" or is it more important to keep the main clientele content?

3) If you have separate floors of the club, would you have the Goth section on the lower so that the people there were visible to everyone who comes in, or would you give them the upper level so that they didn't have so much of the gawking factor going on?

I dunno...these are just a few things that popped into my mind.

In my experience, once a club has achieved a solid foundation of good goth music and enough goth clientelle, the gawkers tend to be too nervous to spend much time inside. The bigger the venue, the less apt gawkers are to wander too deeply. Bouncers can make sure that any folks looking to start trouble don't get far.

The two room/two floor concept is a good one. I know House of Usher (and it's later incarnation Camera Oscura) had the bar in a more well lit front room separate from the larger and darker dance floor, balcony and stage. This is all the benefit of scouting your location because you can't very well add that as an afterthought.

The only rock/goth/metal club round here has 3 floors each with it's own bar/dj setup. there are different things on on different nights and different music on each floor. There are lots of differnet ways to get from one place to another so you can be wandering around for ages (which is good).

Well for me personally I look for a club that has music that I like to listen to and the "dark" atmosphere. Anything to make the place look gothic would be great. Red and black lights, vampiric things, pointy objects (within reason for safety purposes ;) ), etc. Hope this kinda helps ..

Simple...have a good DJ who is friendly, takes requests, and knows what the people like.
Also the ones I've been to have Pool tables and a bar. Make sure plenty of water is always available. Also make sure to have well maintained bathrooms separate the sexes. Drunk people need the restroom. Larger areas are better for dancing make sure the DJ doesn't get bumped into. You may want a little platform area for bands or dj's . As for decor...Dark. Fence separating the bar area where their should be seats. Fake roses on the tables. Candles. And make everything look old or Victorian.
But the most important thing is the DJ. If the musics bad...the people leave. Keep the beat alive ;)

a skull shaped pool on the roof, the teeth is a hot tub and the eyes are swim-up bars and lounges. the floor of the pool is pyrex or some really strong fiber glass. so the people in the pool can see the pretty lights of the show downstairs. also get some crazy ambiance lights on the walls of the pool that kinda shine down to the floor of the club.

I like a club that has a kick ass dance floor with lots of loud music and energy, but I also enjoy have a place where you can actually sit and enjoy the quiet, separated from the noise. A club that provided both areas would be somewhere that I would most likely frequent.

Some places that I liked:

The Conservatory in Oklahoma City - not exclusively a goth club, but has a good set up for CD parties, separate area for hanging out - sofas and chairs, a second area in the back to sell merchandise, a small bar, and a performance area.

Here is a link to the "Church" in Dallas, iti s supposed to be one of the best goth places there. Maybe some of the pics will help. I heard that Joan Jett filmed her "I Love Rock n' Roll" video there too.

http://www.thechurchdallas.com/index.php?pact=home

Another route is a coffee house, we have one called The Beehive in our heighborhood. It seems to be the place where people go before and after they party. It is also a place for teen goths to go and hang out. The owner found a niche and he also owns several other lounges in the same area. Maybe he can help you.

http://www.beehivebuzz.com/index1.html
same owner as:
http://www.myspace.com/lavaloungepittsburgh

Some other ideas:
You gotta have fetish night too.
Dress code to keep out the frat boys
Smoking area / outside area

Good luck!

I've had my best luck with goth clubs by making them private, it allows you to regect legaly those you don't want frequenting and one sure way to get people to come is to make them think that they have to be special to get in. Also themed nights maybee, sometimes the industirial goths get annoyed when type o is playing and vice versa.
that is my advice, good luck with it

I don't really get into the club scene, never have. It's always been too loud and too expensive!

The club I go too is I don't want to say "sexy" because it gives a weird tone to it. Still it is decorated as a inviting place with plush couches and red velvet drapes on all the walls with stone pillars everywhere and candles... fire hazard I know... the dance floor is smokey... and it just has a dark seductive feel to it... It's inviting and a place to let loose listen to Loud music and just be with people that are like you...

There is a club over here called 'Teen Culture' I've stopped going tho because it got a bit boring. We can't drink here as the ages are from 11 - 17 i think or 13 - 17 anyway, we have different rooms for different music, i thik there are at least 5 rooms, one for Metal, Indie, Emo, Indutria and one main room bigger than all the others for music in general. There are many games room too and also like a kinda shop thing to get drinks, candy and such. It was ok but i found it reather boring.

my view of a goth club is to change themes yet keeping it goth, have something that attracts people to always return because it's something new everynight...

The Goth club I go to in Phila is very cool. It is not so much the ambience as it is the people and music. There are some occult symbols as an ankh and pentagram as decorations. I also love the cozy conversation coutches away from the main action. Hope this helps.
