I often see cemetarys portrayed as frightening and a birthplace/dwelling of evil and/or malicious spirits. In my experiance they have always given me a sence of security and well-being (with the exeption o fthe one nearest my house) It seems to me that a religous burial ground would be halowed, and being such, the very opposite of the bad reputation it has. I'd very much like to hear everyones oppinions on this.

A cemetary shouldn't be labeled as "evil" because it's the final resting place of someones loved ones. If anything they should be glorified.

I like cemetaries though I understand that they seem very eerie. When I lived in Niagara Falls, NY I would have to pass by a cemetary on the way to school every morning. My brother and I would look at the dates ranging all the way to 1800's. It was always foggy over the cemetary...

Cemetaries are not evil, seem eerie because of the movies potrayel of them, worked in one for 8 yrs and never found evil there. Resting places of the people before our times, should be shown as a sancutaury for the dead souls and not a zombie filled crypt.

Memento mori and honour the memorie. A cementriy is the place, where we give them the last rest and an anchor to memorize them.
Well, the only evil I can imagine coming out of a cementry is the evil memory remaining a person carries about a decased one.

I like to stay there to relax until I am strong enough to proceed. So do the souls of the dead in the third part of the wheel.

Cemetaries also represent and give us reminders of what is naturally most people's greatest fear...

Well, besides public speaking... makes me wonder why a podium isn't a symbol of evil....

LoL Birra.

Cemetaries are beautiful places. To me they represent a place where we at last get to rest from life's trials and adventures... it's the long sleep in which you pull dirt over yourself as a cover and let your body finally relax completely.

I think that they are gateways and resting places. There's nothing wrong with them at all. Being among the dead probably adds to their scary sense. We fear death, as Birra said, so being amongst the dead for some represents their fate of one day joining the ranks of the dead.

LOL Birra.

I personally find cemetaries to be rather soothing.........in most cases they're well tended, so they are pleasing to look at, whish is soothing. They're quiet too - also soothing. I think Hollywood and their images of rotting corpses erupting from their graves and so forth has a lot to answer for in this instance.

I simply enjoy the history you find in cemetaries...

...ever walk the Freedom Trail in Boston and look at all the old grave stones of the cemetaries there? Where Paul Revere is buried and the like... we're so far removed from the people and events of that era it's almost as if they were only myths until you see there is actually a grave for this person.

Or when you look at husbands and wives buried side-by-side.. and the dates in which they died... and think of how long the one had to live without the other... imagine the heartbreak they endured...

Cemeteries are indeed peaceful places of rest. Oddly enough there are many who think evil breeds there, but if they only took a moment they should realize that evil lives in the hearts of the living not the dead.

I never quite understood that myself. I've always enjoyed frequenting cemetaries, not because I'm morbid, but to see the life that once was. All my relatives however hate going to cemetaries, and when they have to for a funeral they refuse to walk alone amongst the headstones, and wind up dragging me along. I don't mind of course, But it's always bothered me how Graveyards and Cemetaries are viewed. They're not places of evil and doom, they're the resting place of our loved ones; our friends and family.

I don't think of cemetaries being bad at all, in fact, I'm extremely sensitive to evil spirits, and a cemetary is one of the most comfortable places I feel like I can be. Why? cuz practically no one dies in cemetaries anymore. There's nothing evil about it, there's death everywhere.

I love cemeteries. Full of sculpture that reflects the place and time they were made. The stones and tombs often have interesting and insightful stories and epitaphs. I spend a lot of time in them doing family research.
If anyone ever gets the chance - go to Pere La Chaise in Paris (Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Balzac etc) It is stunning

If you die of an illness having to do with I believe some sort of spore cells that are contagious and are burried they can live for thousands of years and if they were in some way disturbed or happend to rise to the surface we could catch that illness. This is what my Advanced Biology teacher said. I don't know this for a fact and am sorry about the lack of info.

I find cemeterys to be to full of trees and sunshine for my liking. They aren't creepy or spooky in my opinion.

i love being in a cemetary i feel safe there. one of my friends from high school took anoher friend of ours and me to this cemetary near us and ppl spray painted all over these old gravestones. i was so mad. it jus gives this sick feeling in your stomach to see that kind of stuff. there's a nother cemetary not far from me it's called Salem cemetary and apparentally there's five witchs buried at the five points of a pentagram and the story is if you make iot through all five of them in the right places they're suppose to come back, but i guess noone has made it placed the thride bc the other two are hided. i had a friend who had the map to which one was where.

cemetaries are not really the abodes of evil. actually we should all respect those graves because it's where our loved ones are buried..

some homeless people here in our country even made their homes inside cemetaries even without electricity. they live there and darkness and yet they are not afraid. i also see in the news that these people even sleeps in the niches when their poorly made houses cannot withstand the bad weathers

Many people are frightened by death. Therefore it's very easy to convince most people that cemetaries are to be feared and that they can contain "evil".

Cemeteries are also portrayed as grounds of the evil by the church as the birth place of evil. So hollywood has taken that concept and run with it. Cemetaries must be the home of the undead the couldn't possibly be from any where else(sarcasm)

I worked in 2 cemeteries for almost a year an never had a problem. But I stilll encounterd many people that were very fearful of them even in the middle of the day because they felt like the dead were watching them and waiting to take away thier soul.

I have never felt frightened or "creeped out" by cemetaries.

When I was in college the most direct path to the area of campus with the science buildings from my dorm was through a cemetary. When walking back from labs at night many of my friends reffused to walk through the cemetary, and took a much longer path. I just walked happily through the cemetary,

I think of them as quite resting places of those that went to the next world ahead of us. Nothing evil there as far as I am concerned.

My friends and I regularly go to a cemetary near where I live. The newest grave is from the early 1900's and the oldest from the late-1600's. We find it to be a wonderful place to relax and it's nearly forgotten, hidden down a dirt road, so not many people know about it.

I don't think cemeteries are evil. I think that concept like other have said comes from hollywoods portrayal of cemeteries having zombies, ghosts and vampires in them that frighten people or do evil deeds. Also may come from old myths that people have told about some cemeteries that have supposed witches or people they say were evil, buried there. They can be a little creepy at night if they are not well lit and no one else is around.

I did have one experience one time at night at a cemetery. My boyfriend and me were out at night walking around a cemetery. The cemetery was not too dark because it was right off of a main road. When we went to leave he could not find his keys. They had been clipped on his jeans and they were not there. He had a flash light in the car so we got it and looked all over that cemetery but never did find his keys. Who knows what actually happen them maybe a mischievous ghost swiped them or they were just some where that we did not look.

I agree with the majority, a cemetary is a final resting place. Its a place of peace and tranquility not a place of evil. Blame hollywood again for that one. Its not a place for evil to hang out and not a place to be haunted as hollywood makes out. The only thing to make it evil would be the fools that hang out there at night causing problems and harming innocent people.

Cemetaries shouldn't be feared at all. If you believe the body is merely a shell... the grave would be the last place that energy would be hanging out. What fun is that? I would think the spirit would be in 'heaven', lingering with the loved ones... or possibly in the same place they died.

growing up, I looked at cemeteries as one of the few places that was peaceful and or comfortable. The fact that most normal people didn't like to go there only helped create a sense of sanctuary within it's gates.

It's true that my friends and I would often go there at night to laugh and have fun but we also never littered the ground nor damaged the property or graves. There was a profound respect that all of us had for the graveyards we visited and I know of one caretaker who actually had no problem with us sneaking in after hours because he had seen us during the day leaving flowers at unvisited graves.

I really don't think we can blame Hollywood for so much. They had to get their ideas from somewhere. Most people know that Hollywood isn't truth even if they know nothing about the subject matter. Most misconsceptions are from old wives tales, campfire stories, rumors, people getting frightened or spooked by something prompted by their imagination.

I fondly remember a cemetary I used to sneak off to to think or meditate in. Even did a silent film there for my drama class in highschool. Some cemetaries are evil, but most aren't. Part of my gifts include being able to sense/feel the general mood or "goodness" of a place. Cemetaries tend to be easier 'cause of the energies living in it. I've been past some pretty evil ones, depressed ones, happy, or content...

I do know however, that it's not usually very wise to go at night. Both because of people who may be lurking there, and because things happen such as roaming spirts or creatures. Also because at night magic/energies fluxuate greatly over and in/through cemetaries, to say they "come alive" could be rather accurate, but I'd say just more active metaphysicaly. I also think it's a thing of respect to not traipse around a graveyard after the sun has set. I did once, to get some dirt for a spell. The things and presenses I felt still makes me shudder.

Over all I still love cemetaries and graveyards.

Speaking in generalities, I see graveyards as neutral. Neither good nor evil. If anything, leaning more towards good, as people are often remembered for the good they did after they pass, rather than the bad they committed. No, that isn't always the case, but generally with the exception of extreme cases, it is.

They are also places of remembrance. And remembering those who came before us, and knowing our history, is essential to growth.

I have never had the conception of a cemetary being an evil place. Cemetaries have always given me a feeling of being at peace with the world.

I think cemetaries are for the living- a place for us to honor those we care for, and 'go to them' when we need it. No, they are not really there- but it helps us in need. And it also places a value on life- that we take careful considerations for how we lay them to 'rest'.

I find cemetaries to be ideal places to meditate as they are generally quite and relaxing. Ocasionally, I have run into places that are cold spots that cause apprehesive feelings. Generally, they are near graves of people who died violently. Even rarer are places that sap energy from electronic devices.

I agree with the majority, but i have an additional point to make....
Whilst a final resting place is calm, serene and beautified... it should be respected....

If i am asleep and someone wakes me up 2 minutes before my alarm, i'd be upset, but it wouldn't phase me.
If i was asleep and was rudely awaken 5 hours early, it would really annoy me....

These guys aren't sleeping for a few hours... they are there for ETERNITY!!!
so... it only leaves the question....
If YOU were woken up as prematurely as a corpse..... WOULDN'T YOU be as pi55ed off as Hollywood says they are????
LoL

Cemeteries are becoming more of a place to visit and not feel so spooked. One large chain owns most of the major cemeteries all over the US at least. There are so many things one can do there besides visit dead love ones. You can do rubbings and if you research it is amazing when visiting an old cemetery how easily it is to tell various aspects of the stones by certain things on them. Not going to go into all that but gravestones are an interesting study. Nowadays in more modern cemeteries they tend to limit the large gravestones due to maintaining the grounds.

The view of cemeteries has changed so much at least out in Califonia they have all sorts of parties in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where many celebrities have been buried.

On Mother's Day we went to visit my Mother's grave, she passed last August. People were camped out by gravesites having picnics so a lot of the fear and stigma seems to have lessened, at least during the day *grins*

I don't see them as evil. I however feel pain when I go there. Pain from the people who are mourning and some pain from the deceased. It is very hard for me to go there. I go to visit my grandfather everytime I'm back in Ohio and I can only stay for just minutes. The pain is almost intolerable and I feel suffocated.

I think it's just people being foolishly afraid when they label cemeteries as evil. They are a place for the deceased to be remembered and celebrated. They're a nice place to go because of all of the spirits around.

I agree with those who believe that cemetaries are places of peace and tranquility. It's a place where people can come to, to make a connection with those who have passed away.

Anyone who considers a graveyard to be 'evil' is condemning whomever they place there to 'an afterlife in hell', so to speak. This is absurd, henceforth my belief as stated above. :)

If you ever travel through Oklahoma, visit Geronimo's grave at Fort Sill. He is buried with a group of other Apache and Comanche chief's. It is neat sometimes to see local Native Americans working rituals with smoke over the graves to protect the spirits.

A cemetery is a resting place...it's where people are put to join back with mother earth. They are normally calm. Cemeteries can only be slightly dangerous to highly sensitive people who can pick up on lingering spirits who do not realize they are dead yet...or are angry.Basically don't mess with the dead...and you don't have anything to worry about.

My opinion on this subject is--homosapiens are too naive to know that it's not the dead that will hurt you--it's the demonic and living. Sure the dead can scare the piss out of you--but they can't really harm you physically, only mentally and emotionally.

I would say I was scared once in my life by a cemetary, usualy I am okay and just feel the presence of those who stay there not realising they are dead and just dont wanna leave their resting place. But once I've been freaked out and scared like sh** the cemetary was really old, around the 1700 but not after the 1800, the oldest grave was 1798, and it was like walking at the gate of a war and feeling all the anger, the fear and the feeling of abadon coming from all those poeple at the same time, really freaked me out. Even my friend who wanted to show off backed up and we when to another cemetary that night.

I would not label cemetaries as evil. All of my life, cemetaries have been my favorite place to hang out. I have found them to be tranquil. There was a huge cemetary on the side of a mountain, where i grew up. One side of the cemetary was not used and everyone from the area used it for sledding during the winter. I have hundred of pictures of us all hanging out there. We never disrespected the area. It was just a beautiful cool place to hang out.

Common movie misconception. Graveyards can be one of the most serene, peaceful, and surprisingly beautiful places on earth.

One of my favorite things to do when I have sparetime is to spend the day with a few rolls of black and white and my 35mm and travel around to the different graveyards taking pictures....I've never felt evil, or or any eerie feelings, just peace and quiet...calming

Thanks to the movies and many horror stories alot of people expect a zombie to pop out of its coffin like some kinda evil jack-in-the-box and grab their ankles. Or at the very least, to see some kinda ookie spookie ghostie floating around like a sheet. Since I live right next to a cemetary, and often park my car about 3ft from headstones, I can safely say that doesn't happen. It never ceases to amaze people that I'm not scared walking about at night like they're suprised nothings gotten me yet, which I think is pretty damn funny. I guess if you're not used to being around it every day, or aren't awake at night and are'nt used to night sounds and atmosphere then it can be a bit scary. Occasionally you might hear some weird noises or see some spooky things, but from my experience there's nothing for anybody to be frightend of.
