in some point of every ones life we have all heard or read about nostradamus, and his prophecies, which all about a small hand full have come true,

what i have wondered was he just a man blessed with the gift to see into the future? or did him practing the occult arts bring forward his prophecies? what is our opion or explaniation.

me i think it was a little of both, many people through out history had visions of things to come which did come true,

and some people who do practice things such as star gazing, tarro , palm reading, tea reading, candle reading, and the many others i forgot to add, have had visions and they came true,

with him like i said i think it is a little of both,

I think he was using dark art, and black craft, most of his prediction were I would 75% if I remember correctly, so this why I think it was black craft.

I actually believe in the alien god theory....For those who are not familiar with this theory it states that Aliens came here and helped us evolve.I have read a few scriptures from different religions and i have noticed a lot of connection...For eg In the bible its said that humans were created from adam's rib right?
That was called a miracle, today its called genetic cloning....Hinduism is a pure pagan religion, even it has a lot of alien connection in it.For eg:the Mahabharata has battles which if anyone read would clearly understand it to be full scale nuclear warfare with lasers and nuclear blasts....Egyption civilization, the Mayans and Aztecs too record a lot of extraterrestrial interference. In my opinion Earth was visited by a no alien races each giving away their knowledge to us....

Coming back to the post Nostradamus published books based on judicial astrology..
Even Galileo who said that the Earth is round..

Nostradamus-Galileo-Truths about our world-Astrology-Extra Terrestrials..

See the connection....

alien theory is a bit a long shot but its is a good point and well develop answer so it gives some taugh to it.
I dont beleve in aliens beside the fact that alien to me mean not living on earth so technicly angel could be consider aliens so maybe I do beleive in them.

Darn getting a headack here....gonna have to pound this one.

You're right CryingMist...It is a long shot....And heh hee you just said that angels can be considered Aliens....thats exactly what i'm saying....Maybe Aliens being a race more advanced than us had mechanical wings and at that time when superstitions ruled over nations the people gave them a name "Angels"......

I know its a very long shot but i'd like to believe in it..Its all a matter of perception ...

Nostradamus' supposed prophecies have been discredited on almost every level... like Shakespeare a lot of his supposed insights were not even his... the widespread practice of the time was for authors to attribute their own researches to him to enhance their pedigree... Nostradmaus had not greater insight than your average daily paper astrologer... he predicted hitler... oh please... references to the hun prove that do they? he predicted gorbachev (Michael the Marked???) as destroying the world? where is he now? queuing up for potatoes in Moscow?

I think he's like Santa Claus... a mythical figure based on several figures who's tales and wisdom are largely apocryphal... he didn't really predict anything specific at all... his prophecies have all the authenticity of the Bible Code or Revelations... The power lies in the faith people put into his prohecies and their determination to find meaning in some fairly open-ended couplets... fortune cookie claptrap for the most part...

St Colomba was a monk who was tormented by powerful visions of the future... the Catholic Church is rather embarassed by him... here's something to tickle your fancy...

Revered as a saint, his life was written by Adamnan. In reporting Columba's life, Adamnan gives what appears to be the first written account of the Loch Ness Monster.

Traveling in Scotland, Columba had to cross the Loch Ness. On its banks, he saw some of the Pict folk burying a man who had been bitten by a water monster while swimming. The body had been pulled from the loch with the aid of a hook by rescuers who had come to his assistance in a boat.

Despite the danger, Columba ordered one of his followers to swim across the loch and bring back a coble (boat) that was moored on the other side. This man's name was Lugne Mocumin. Without hesitation, Lugne stripped for the swim and plunged in.

The monster, robbed of its earlier feast, surfaced and darted at Lugne with a roar, its jaws open. Everyone on the bank was stupefied with terror; everyone, except Columba, that is. A firm believer in the authority of the crucified Christ, he raised his hand, making the sign of the cross. Invoking the name of God, he commanded the beast, saying, "You will go no further, and won't touch the man; go back at once."

At the voice of the saint, the monster fled as if terrified, "more quickly than if it had been pulled back with ropes," says Adamnan.

The heathen were amazed. Everyone who witnessed the sight gave glory to the God of the Christians.

Did the event really take place? A church historian may be permitted a few doubts.

To begin with, Adamnan's account was written over a hundred years after the alleged events.

Furthermore, different versions of the story disagree with one another. One has Columba raising the monster's first victim from the dead by laying his staff across his chest.

We also note that this is only one of many extraordinary events in Adamnan's account. According to him, Columba dripped with prophecies and predictions that came true. He made water into wine like Jesus, drew water from a rock like Moses, calmed a storm at sea, provided a miraculous draught of fishes, multiplied a herd of cattle, drove a demon out of a milk pail, and cured the sick. A book owned by Columba could not be destroyed by water. Through his prayers he killed a wild boar, stopped serpents from harming the inhabitants of a certain island. Angels and manifestations of divine light attended him throughout his life. Adamnan's account has so many incredible tales that it is unbelievable.

First most of the text he wrote in was very obscure and hard to interrupt so who really knows what he was predicting but him. I think it would be easy to either find documents proving he was gifted or the complete opposite. I look more into the OP’s question as does being into the occult bring forth certain gifts. In this I would say that to open the mind to a wider range of views then societies standards for what is normal opens many people up to discover gifts we have and to share those gifts with others.

Perhaps Nostradamus was born with what was known as the veil.. a gift to see into the future. or perhaps he was able to use brain more efficiently than most. I've heard it said that most of us only use about 20% of our brain's capabilities.

I believe most if not all his predictions were false. Its those that have read the predictions that have placed them possible truths.

i.e. I read somewhere that Nostie predicted the Trade Center falling. I delved into it and found that people have taken separate predictions and blended them together to read what they want.

We create our own future, nostradamus simply put forward what could be from the energies around him. Some have come true, others have not because the energys changed after he gave what he saw.

seeing the future is a little like trying to predict where the spider will build their web. it all depends on the spider.

He was gifted, how this gift came about is of no consiquence to us.

At the time, just to record his preminitions, he was risking being charged with hericy and burned alive or worse...

The fact that he was smart enough to hide his findings in his Quatrains, like future predicting Hiku poetry, it survived the test of time and his words made it to the present day.

Had he been clearly spoken in his written records, they most assuradly would have been burned and he, executed as a heritic.

P.S. I'm a huge fan of Nostradamus, in case thats not apparent.

Nostradamus was extremly well connected with the elements, and with that undoubtly, extremley aware individual/soul.

He needed less that three hours to get fully rested, that speaks of his achievments, of his awareness, and ultimatly, of his connection with the machine that is surrounding us, knowing it trough.

He used some tools, wich served as, say..., divination media. Those tools were, among the mentioned; a mirror, a somesuch golden ring, and a simple three legged stool, lol

Who knows in wich manner he used these, but Nostradamus was extraordinary, indeed.

There are a number of books about what he saw and the way he had to 'disguise' certain things for fear of being killed.

There is a huge amount of information if you care to look.

The Nostradamus miracles read a lot like the Bible Code... you can find what you want to see in them... Hisler could just as easily be Husler?... or Hussein? The world is not ending... global warming is a crock... the planet was at its hottest when no fossil fuels were being generated... Nostradamus is like a lot of similar figures... people alot reputations to them and these just spiral until the myth becomes harder to leave behind than the truth... as Iago says of reputation "oft gained without merit and lost without deserving"...

His quatrains are so vague. They read like horoscopes in a newspaper letting you apply them to many different situations. Some say he kept them vague so he wouldn't be persecuted but I'm not sure if this was the intent or not.

Hmmms ok thinks i will go back to the idea of the differen planes that exist ... It could also be He has used this plane and so in His dreams Having them be so Vivid and Realistic HE wrote them downHis Own kinda Deja vu He saw what was coming and decided to Help out our civilization its is our choice to believe Him or Not Not all Dreams are Real or Maybe How He saw His Dreams were slightly off making it to us Him being inaccurate and Wrong... But it was His perception of HIs dreams Seeing How Many of His dreams were in Fact Head on ... It is also possible He has had this Gift of being able to observe this 4th dimension and se what was going to occur.. Another possibility.. rather then aliens..

the trouble is, when you actually get down to it, his prophesies are quite cryptic and vague - they could apply to almost anything. he was undoubtedly a great bard in the druidic tradition, and clearly had some prophetic gift, but i think a lot of it has been blown totally out of proportion. just for the fun of it, try and apply his prophesies to the events in your favourite soap opera.

he who throws money at the people of gates shall reap it back a hundredfold
yet the man of delorean shall fall to the white powder

could mean anything really.

I don't believe there was any magic at all! If you write enough stuff in a vague manner someone will come along and find events that seem to fulfill the prophecy.

But the true test for a prophecy is does it have specific predicitive power that can portend an event before it happens! I certainly have not seen any such power in any so called prophets.

Most of his predictions were made to fit. Like he said Hister...and everyone thought it was Hitler....during his time there was a gereral named Hister and a river near where he was born. You can make anything come true if you fudge the facts to suit yourself.

Nostradamus was a great man, who got his more clear visions from arsenic mixed with mugnot. He had his visions earlier than that, but they became more clear after that. Also he was in a secret society to read "forbidden material" such as Ghajat al Hakim (The one his first wife wanted badly enough to kill herself).

I heard that Nostradamus used to snort nutmeg then look into a bowl of water and write down what he saw.

I made a thread about this once but it got deleted because it dealt with drug use, heh.
I think it's a case of 'softening' your mind this way in order to open yourself up to being able to 'see'.
Not sure that made much sense to anyone except myself.

Most of the antique greek sybills were as vague as the Nostradamus prophecies are.
He was not into the dark arts though, sorry and he was at the side of light: his entire life it is a prove for that!
He didn`t feared the religious persecution though, because he was protected by the Queen of France herself: he was her advisor and teacher into the occult sciences just like John Dee in England and Bohemia ;)
I think every prophecy has a great degree of unsure, because there are more futures not just one.
Of course his prophecies did came true in a rather small percent (certainly under 50 %) and they are not of very much help for us.In fact they never were, even when they were true.
Nevertheless he remain one of the greater alchemists and physicians of his century and he was the one who cured a very dangerous plague who killed many people.

I do not agree with Uzziel about Shakespeare though... but that`s a matter to discuss in a different thread of course.

I believe nostradamus's abilities were a mixture of natural skill and occult practices.

I also believe that he saw many possible futures and not just the one avenue.

I believe there is a contraine that mentions the end of the world and another where he sees the world at peace.

However thinking of the time and place and his need to be vague about his predictions it will always be impossible to understand what he was going on about and what he truly saw.

I do remember there was a contraine that saw the coming of world peace when a powerful nation has the first woman president, and it will bring about the change.

He did predict the catholic church going through problems with people losing faith and finding other forms of belief. All because the church is too strict in its policies.

So I think some of what he saw has come true! But as for his disaster predictions, well with the amount of wars going on in so many countries on a regular basis, it would be so hard to predict which country will invade who and who is going to be attacking who.

All in all we are the ones that control out destiny, we are the ones that can make the changes needed to get this world on an even keel again. Its just up to us to make a stand for our beliefs and take the lead.

Ok will stop jabbering now. :P

My explanation is that he just made a tone of general predections. Having done that the odds that some would come true are pretty good. Most of his predections are ambiguous and could be interpreted in different ways anyway. I don't think he had a gift.

Whether much can be gained --- understanding and the ability to thwart disaster --- from Nostradamus' predictions, kudos to him for even making the effort, much less writing them down for us to ruminate over.

The man lived on the edge in his dark corner of the world, and he believed in himself.

I think he may have had a gift but occult technique surely didn't hurt. I like to think that his vagueness can be attirbuted to him seeing things too far in the future for him to understand and so it was hard to express...but...who knows. I do think he got some things right. However, you can't get it all right. Just like with Tarot you see how things will unfold if things remain as they are at the time of the reading. The future is changable.

shadowfever hit the nail on the head. I'm not saying his predictions aren't, didn't, and haven't come true...but being as vague as they are, it takes a very skilled person (con artist?) to take the vagueness, then find the right situations to apply them to in order to be convincing enough to draw forth profit, from the prophet.

'The renowned prophet Nostradamus (Michel de Nostradame) was born on December 14, 1503 in St. Remy, Provence, France. Nostradamus came from a long line of Jewish doctors and scholars. His family had converted from Judaism to Christianity in 1502, as a result of persecution on the ascension of Louis the XII. After a classical education he studied medicine, herbalism and astrology.

During Nostradamus' lifetime the Black Death (today known as the bubonic plague) wiped out over a quarter of Europe. It is no wonder that a sense of apocalyptic terror fills Nostradamus' quatrains.

Nostradamus can indisputably be said to have been ahead of his time, at least in terms of medical practice. His treatment of the Black Death involved removal of the infected corpses, fresh air and unpolluted water for the healthy, a herbal preparation rich in Vitamin C, and (in contravention of contemporary medical practise) not bleeding his patients.

Nostradamus was successful in lessening the impact of the Black Death in the capital of Provence, Aix. The grateful citizens gave him a stipend for life.

Nostradamus began to write his prophetic verses in the city of Salon, in 1554. They are divided into ten sections called Centuries (which refers to the number of verses in each section, not to a unit of 100 years). The Centuries were published in 1555 and 1558, and have been in print continuously ever since.

Nostradamus had the visions which he later recorded in verse while staring into water or flame late at night, sometimes aided by herbal stimulants, while sitting on a brass tripod. The resulting quatrains (four line verses) are oblique and elliptical, and use puns, anagrams and allegorical imagery. Most of the quatrains are open to multiple interpretations, and some make no sense whatsoever. Some of them are chilling, literal descriptions of events, giving specific or near-specific names, geographic locations, astrological configurations, and sometimes actual dates. It is this quality of both vagueness and specificity which allows each new generation to reinterpret Nostradamus.

Nostradamus is said to have predicted his own death. When his assistant wished him goodnight on July 1, 1566, Nostradamus reputedly pronounced, "You will not find me alive at sunrise." He was found dead on July 2, 1566.

Nostradamus was interred standing upright in the Church of the Cordeliers of Salon. However, his story does not end there; he was disinterred twice, once on purpose and once maliciously.

In 1700, his body was moved by the city to a more prominent crypt. When a necklace was found on his skeleton bearing the date '1700', his body was hurriedly reinterred.

During the French Revolution, in 1791, some drunken soldiers broke into his tomb. The mayor quickly placated the mob by describing how Nostradamus had predicted the revolution, and they replaced the bones in the crypt.

However, Nostradamus had the last laugh. In Century 9, Quatrain 7, he had written:

The man who opens the tomb when it is found
And who does not close it immediately,
Evil will come to him
That no one will be able to prove.

Reputedly, the soldiers who desecrated his tomb for the final time were ambushed on their way back to base and killed to the last man.'
