Vampires in one form or another appear in countless fictional depictions from movies (all the way from Nosferatu and Dracula through to Dusk to Dawn, Blade, etc.)

Then there are the literary ones - lots of good book series out there - and many aren't even written by Anne Rice... ;-)

Then there's the RPG's, TV shows (Kindred, Dresden files, etc.)

Which are some of your favorite depictions and why?

I always liked Kindred The Embraced the TV show. I wish that the would start it again. I think I like it because it seemed to have a story line to it not just a typical vampire show.

I am going to have to say the book series, Dark Hunter by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I just like the way she depicts them as heroes and not mass murders.

She brings her characters to life and you can actually picture them in your head. She portrays the Dark Hunters, vampire like creatures, as immortal heroes that the human people do not know even exist, but live among them.

I reccommend this series to all readers.

I love to read books by Christien feehan.
She write about vampires in her Dark series.
Vampires and carpathians. It's like two awsome parts of a vampire in one..though carpathians are not really vampires-well almost.threw hundreds of years without a lifemate..and darkness they become vampires.
I donno if anyone reads her books. But,I must say..it's an awsome series.Romance,darkness,passion,old-world and new-world info about vampire and carpathian legends.Great stuff.
Movies,
I like movies that involve..todays world..acting as and 'If it was to happen'
vampire story.Like Frightnight,in a way-blade.

The vampire Sonia Blue appeared as the heroine in "Sunglasses after Dark" back in the 90s. There were sequels to continue the story written by Nancy A Collins. Also the vampire fiction of Poppy Z Brite appeared shortly after Anne Rice, and brought the vampire into modern southern gothic literature. Currently the vampire fiction of Kim Harrison and Kelly Armstrong are what I am reading.

There was this series I have just finished reading. It started with a book called "Twilight." It would mean a trip upstairs, right now, to get the authors name, so that shall wait 'till the morning. In the book, the writer made the vampires so mysterious. They were afraid of what they were. In such a chilling way, you could almost feel the fear of the characters. I loved how she portrayed them. Each vampire had their one gift, an enhancement of a latent gift in their human life. From what I see of descriptions around here, that is very close to how other feel about their "awakening."

I am a huge fan of the old Bela Lugosi dracula depictions. The good old days where a movie was about the acting abilities of under paid thespians and not the allure of a multi-million dollar special effects budget...

I am greatly fond of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. For me, it was the first depiction of vampires being beautiful and exotic in every way.

The underworld series are my favorite vampire movies for the simple reason that it was the first time a story was done where someone could become a vampire/werewolf hybrid. It definately made for an interesting and exciting story.

I agree that Christine has alot of good books, but my favorite so far has to be Maggie Shayne's 'Wings in the Dark' series which is still going on. She depicts the night life with science and magic combined in a sort of harmony, except for the fact that the science means to kill out the vampires after. . . you'll just have to read 'em.

Hmm...I have read so many books about vampires, its honestly hard to choose between them all.

Anne Rice's series was the first series of vampire novels I read, and was instantly in love with Lestat. But I do very much enjoy novels by Katie MacAllister and her books about The Dark Ones.

As for movies, I would say definitely Underworld. Who can resist Kate Beckinsale?

I know I couldn't... :-)

I cut my teeth on all of the old Dracula movies... even watched the old "Cliffhangers" TV show that had a vampire storyline as one of the three major storylines...

Anne Rice took things to a new level for me...

Varney the Vampire

first published 1845 and one of the influences on Bram Stoker when he wrote Dracula, over fifty years later, in 1897

thought to have been written by Thomas Preskett Prest who is best known for writing Sweeny Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Varney has been republished again and is listed in the database :)

I loved Kindred: The Embraced. The only reason the show was canceled was the fact that the Price, Luna - The real life actor, was killed in a motorcycle accident during the making of the second season.

Although the new series Moonlight is quite a looker. As well as the Dresden files.

30 days of night has a great dipiction I think, there has been some toying about vamps in alaska and whatnot, but this comic series seemed to bring it more to light (or night) than others. I am also found of both Ann Rice and Vampire: The Masquerade's versions. Then there is always an oldy, but a goody, Braum Stoker who didn't invent the fictional vampire, but certainly set the standard that fictional writers all use today. Salem's Lot is also interesting.

Doesn't anyone like Spike?

Hey, I'm a reader --- gobble this stuff up from Varney to Vlad, but Spike, on Buffy, was one hot vamp. Also liked Darla. they tended to be less tormented about being "moral" but the characterizations were good. They fought the good fight. Blood and humor, does it for me every time.

There are alot of entertaining movies and books.

Lestat is my hero though.

" God kills indescriminately and so shall we".

Remember that part? When Louis is balking over what he needs to do to survive?

" You are what you are Louis!"

Lestat is not a whiner~ he doesn't go around asking why. He revels in what he is. He enjoys his existence.

Bram Stoker set the stage for the vampire most are familiar with. The movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was more lavish I think than even the book. But God I love the Chronicles of Radu in the Subspecies movies.

yeah, the 'subspecies' films were great. pity they stopped making them but i don't think there was much more they could do with the storyline. wasn't there a film which was almost a sequel called 'vampire journals' and i don't mean the anne rice books!! It featured the same vamp 'ash' i think his name was, as in the last 'subspecies' film.

I am going to have to go with a couple of newer movies that went straight to dvd.

"Perfect Creature" & "Night Addicts"

Mainly because the tend to focus on more natural creations than on the mythic supernatural themes.

Then again. I always do picture a Vampire more as a Wedigeo like Creature than as a Bram Stoker Ghost. LOL

I think most of the people here are VERY confused about the meaning of the term "romantic".Please read more about this subject and do not mix the so called romance with the dark romanticism from the XVIII century!!!

I dispise the "modern" american vampire characters (Buffy the vampire... slayer makes me laugh) as they are no more then kitch characters and false "art".

I love Clarimonde from "La Morte Amoureuse" by Theophile Gautier ()and Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu.
There are many good works unknown to the american readers and that`s a pity!I couldn`t find on the internet even the title translated in english!!! ROFL

Here are some names of french, russian, german great (yet unknown LOL) writers and the years when vampire books was wrote:

Merimee (1827) La Guzla
Ewers (1921) Der Vampir
Ponson du Terrail (1853) The dead baroness
Paul Feval (1875) The Vampire City
Paul Feval (1865) La Vampire
Tolstoi !!! The Family of Vurdalak
Puskin !!! The vurdalak; Marko Jakubovici
and so on... there are too many to list here.

Some could say it is a matter of taste but I the taste itself can be educated ... and the soul would became profound and the feelings diversified and nuanced.
Please read some old books and you will be seduced by really GREAT characters and don`t just hang on with the action based storyline.

Haven't read any of the vampire slayer series. Not too interested in slayers, although I do like it when the heroine's kick ass.

Lost interest in Rice sort of mid-way through Queen. Tried to read a few others, and once tried to listen to a recording on a long road trip. 18 disks!!! of endless, winding tangents and florid language. Couldn't take it. I'll read the Victorians for that.

i have a few series that i like to read. the first is the Cirque du Freak series, by Darren Shan. I like it because it goes into detail abot the life and society of vampires, and their more violent off branch, the Vampaneze. It's tottally original, and even a little funny at times. It's a series that i never wanted to stop reading.
the next is the series written by Stephenie Meyer.Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse. I like this series, because I can relate to the main character, Bella. She meets and falls in love with vampire, almost kills herself on several accounts and finds out her best friend is a werewolf, all in less than a year. The first book is kind of and introductory, while the second is a tragedy, and the third is of love and sacrifice. well, that's my opionion, really. but i love this series alot.

I personally since into poetry so much think's that Lord Bryon is awesome in his work of a vampire... One of his poem's and my all time fav's is below...

But first, on earth as vampire sent,
Thy corse shall from its tomb be rent:
Then ghastly haunt thy native place,
And suck the blood of all thy race;
There from thy daughter, sister, wife,
At midnight drain the stream of life;
Yet loathe the banquet which perforce
Must feed thy livid living corse:
Thy victims ere they yet expire
Shall know the demon for their sire,
As cursing thee, thou cursing them,
Thy flowers are withered on the stem. (O:

Okay so he is probably not the most compelling vampire but I want to give props to Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I personally enjoyed the television show. This was mainly because of the girls of Buffy but none the less I watched. Spike was a deep character or as deep as a character could be on that show. I liked the way the series ended with Spike sacrificing himself. I say go Spike.

I like Dracula 2000, i know the movie itself wasn't amazing, but the story behind dracula, being jusdas and all, i found quite entertaining, aswell as "Bram Stokers Dracula" was great aswell if only they could have found someone other then a surfer and an idiot to play the leads, perhaps two people with an actual english accent, or maybe two real actors... but thats just me.

Anne Rice and many others were great but my favorite has to be Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), She adds a few twists to vampires and werewolves that I truely liked.

I too liked Dracula 2000, the storyline was excellent, pity about the actors although the actor who played Van Helsing was good, sorry forgot his name. The sequel was alright, nothing special and the 3rd instalment was utterly atricous i'm sorry to say.

ok, I've never read Anne Rice, but I'll try to get some of her books. My favorite vampire movie. . .hmm. . .I guess that there will be a couple: 'interview with a vampire' think was the name (had brad pitt in it), queen of the damned, underworld 1 and 2, dracula 2(with jason lee), dracula (with winona rider), and there's more I just can't think of 'em.

For me the most compelling portrayal would have to be the character of "Louie" in Rice's "Interview with the Vampire." His near-schizophrenic internal struggle between the desire to be compassionate and the polar opposite desire to feed on those he feels such compassion for is excruciating to watch... and a struggle with which I personally identify.

i can't really place one author or another i just like the way they all make vampire's. some are sexy, some are exotic and some are just murders. I love the way the authors make them so real in the stories and on tv. It almost makes you actually believe they are there.

I actually enjoy the classic Bela Lugosi version though the Spanish version filmed at the same time and on the same sets at night was probably even better done that Todd Brownings film. Nosferatu was interesting though I'm sure not many here are interested in silent films, but the remake followed the orginal quite well. And I must admit that the Full Moon Videos of the Subspecies series is a guilty pleasure of mine. I think Radu rocks. They all have their flaws but after all the movies created the image that most people have of vampires no matter how far off the mark they are.

I personally prefer the vampires portrayed by the written word. There is more free reign for my own imagination when I don't actually see something. :) While I know that there are other authors that have written about vampires (many of which I'm very familiar), I still have to say that Anne Rice did a beautiful job with her vampires. She gave them all such distinct personalities and a vibrance that some vampire literature lacks. She managed to weave an intricate web with her tales that ensares the reader and has you wondering what's real and what's not. Her vampires were so alluring for both their human frailities and their god-like strengths.

-.- I could go on and on...and on. lol

Although she was only in a couple of episodes the character of Uta Refson in the showtime series The Lword during season 3 was very erotic and believable.
She was a vampyrologist and vampire presented in a modern and hip context. I so hope she makes a return appearance in the series in the future.

I'm kinda old hat and enjoyed the character of Dracular that Bram Stoker depicts.
I have read and enjoyed most of Ann Rice's work but it does get too much how they (vampires) are all made to be perfect specimens both in looks and physical appearance.

I think Angel is a new age barbie.

When it comes to these fictional ideas, than I always choose Lestat, but not that boy out of Queen of the Dummned, but the Real Lestat, the way T.Cruise depicted him, with Skill, and Vigor.

Undestructable image in my mind.

A perfect picture of a powerfull human.

Twisted, yet Handsome.

Kind, but Determined.

Capable, but Lasy.

Lestat just rulez

One of my favorite vampire stories is Vampire of the Mists by Christie Golden. Next to Dracula, it is one of my favorites. I am not even sure its published anymore though.

As for movies, the Lost Boys is still one of my favorites. Its not a very serious film but I love the depiction of a vampire gang feeding off of the various riff raff that gather at the amusement park.

I really like one game for doing a decent job of portraying a vampire. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was a pretty good atempt at making the "hero" of the game a vampire.

I'd much rather read books than watch over the top Hollywood inspired scripted movies and TV shows
I find that ones imagination is a far better tool than a movie screen, as well all see things through different eyes...

A book can take you to places that no movie or show could come close to, even with expensive special effects and A-List cast

On-screen - Spike (of course!)
Lost Boys - my first taste of vampires

Off-screen - I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Kim Harrison's take on vampires in her Rachel Morgan books. They have 'living vampires' - those which are born with the vamp virus yet can still go out in the sunlight, worship, and all the things that humals can, yet they're much stronger, then when they die they become the undead vamps - more like the classic vamps.

I think Bram Stroker and Anne Rice have done the best job so far in describing vampires. I may have some bias though. Stroker was Irish and so am I. I am your basic European mutt, who embraces her Irish hertiage more than anything else. Anne Rice is from New Orelans. I was born there.

I have a few series that I like which the reading is very smooth and addictive and can’t put it down

The Black Daggar Brotherhood Books by J.R. Ward - These are some of the hottest men besides the sex … the books and the actual battle is a fight to keep a balance between good and evil (Heaven and Hell).

Dark-Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon – these books are very unique and the stories that make you crave for the next book. You really can identify with the characters as if you know them just as Temptation mentioned above in her comment.

The Hunters by Shiloh Walker - These vampires are hunters to protect innocent victims from abuse by humans or rouge vampires and if they have special gifts such as witchcraft than they will train them to be hunters. (explicit sex)

Many of the books today are bringing vampires to a more erotic forefront with the ‘dangerous appeal framed to set fire to your libido’
