I was reading TrinityGirl01 first encounters and it got me to think. What if as children our “imaginary” friends are not imaginary but more along the lines of ghost. I’ve heard that children have more chances in seeing something that we adult don’t. I don’t understand why they can and we cant, I mean what if we saw something as a child and the adult around us passed it off as a childhood dream or game. I guess my question is do you think “imaginary” friends are just made up or do you think there could be something more to it?

I believe there is more to it...I don't really know why it seems more children see ghosts then the adult...perhaps we do see them but we don't know that they are ghosts...perhaps they appear to adults differently then children...

I know in the case of my own "imaginary" friend as a child, she was quite real. Turned out to be my spirit guide. I would think many of children's imaginary friends are not so "imaginary".

I had imaginary friends when I was a child, but they weren't ghosts. I did see ghosts, though. Everyone in my family had, but I'd seen them the most often

Not for me though. My imaginary friends were just imaginary.

It is an interesting question. Perhaps that is what our imaginary friends are while we are a child. Then we reach the age where people tease you for having them and so we close our mind to those type of occurrances to "fit in". I wish the world were more open-minded. But it seems a good enough explanation to me. Why else would we be able to see as children and no longer when we grow up?

I have never had an "imaginary" friend but I do believe that I have seen ghosts. My opinion is that they are entirely separate, I have a hard time seeing ghosts deciding to just be best friends with children. But thats just my thoughts.

Honestly i think theres more to it. I believe kids perceive things and pick up on things differently then most grown adults. Their senses are more atuned to unfamilar things and they feel the world around them differently then us adults do..Not sure why they sense imaginary friends etc and we can't do it as much. Maybe it is because they have a different mindset and also because they believe entirely as where we adults tend to be more cynical. Not sure, but that might be a good point. =] Their belief systems are different then ours.

Not...Children have a wider span of imagination then adults do. Children have the willingness to create and make things real in their eyes...most adults don't.

Well for the first part of your question . No I belive they are for the most part totally separte . Now some children , not knowing the distinction between the two might confuse them . For the second part of your question . I belive that as a child our brain is open to the boundless possibilites of ...well ...anything . As we grow we are offten times taught that such things are nonsence . As such we start passing them off , and over time shut our brain down to those functions

We know that children have a much harder time distinguishing between what is fantasy and what is real than adults. I think we need to keep this in mind when we are talking about imaginary friends.

I think i have posted this somwhere on here before. i have read that we are all born with the ability to see more then whats visible to the eye. as we grow and learn and slowly conform to what is the normal in our society and culture at that time, we .. no longer nurture those abilities. Hence forth loosing those skills.

My imaginary friend was incredibly real. My parents, to give them their due, were quite happy for me to have her. They were quick to dismiss ghosts and monsters but I think they were fine with me having positive companions.

I would tend to come down on the side of it being a very strong imagination, but it would be nice to think that the companions some of us have had as children could be real.

That sounds a bit like the "cartoon effect". You know, where someone doesn't fall until after he has realized that he has walked off the cliff ....

Sorry, don't buy it. Kids might have another outlook on things and a different way of describing, but either it's there or not.

I do believe that children's imaginary friends could be ghosts. Chlidren can see things we cant, because their minds are more open (IMO) to such supernatural forces. I don't have an example to share offhand but do believe this to be true.

I think that's definitely possible.

The way I see it, the reason young children and animals can see things that we as adults don't see(most of us anyway) is because they aren't told "that doesn't exist" or they don't train their mind that way.
So they actually see what's there, instead of training their mind to block it out. I think the blocking happens sometime growing up.

One thing that's wrong with this idea is that why wouldn't we remember having real imaginary friends? I know I used to pretend to have a sister, but I knew she wasn't there.

i do not believe in ghosts, therefore i do not think there is more.
i believe that children use their minds more because there is more life for them to explore.
they find the joys in life and use their minds for what they are for...to think.
having an imagination is something that should be cherished.

Since not all children had or have an imagery friend it would be more sensible to believe that they are in fact made-up, hence - imaginary. A escape from a world that the child feels that it doesn't belong in. When this child doesn't grow up and interact in the real world as an adult the imagery friend becomes a spirit guide. Some lives are wasted in fantasy.

I would only admit to this on this site, but I saw "imaginary people" until I was 16 years old. I also slept with my head under the covers until the age of 16 because if this. At the time I thought I was crazy (my parents could not see the apparitions when I would call them into the room) , now I know that was just sensitive to my surroundings. I wish that I had been comfortable enough to explore what was really going on.

Interesting question... on one hand I would like to think that it was all in my mind.... but because I have an adult mind now. And as such look to science to explain most experiences in life... I am not truely subjective. Sorry.

Children have not had years of 'don't tell lies' or 'thats not true or real' drilled into their heads. Their minds and imaginations know no boundaries and so they are more open to things.

Children have a better chance to see spirits because they do not have a preconcieved notion that they dont exist. Most adults dont believe that spirits dont exist so they will convince children that wahat they see is just imaginary

This is VERY common. People have often theorized that children, being new to this Earth and straight from the 'other side', are more perceptive to spirits. And as you become an elderly person- you get closer to God once again... and perception is again heightened.

I believe children interact with ghosts and yes, I think it is possible that it is under the guise of imaginary friend. My little sister when she was about 3-5 use to play and laugh by herself. When she left the house...she stopped..It was then we realized the house was haunted. As if the ghost was board or lonely it began to make itself known to the rest of us.

Some good thoughts...I beleive as children are more open to the spirits world around them that it is possible for some to be seeing ghosts on occation. But such things are also rare- I do not think every child would be seeing them. And almost every child growing up has at least one imaginary friend.

My answer to this one is simple...

Imagination is the key to everything.

Do those of you that believe in God SEE him or does the image of him (other than that picture that appears to be some form of Jacques DeMolay and not a Jewish man from the Palestinian area) appear to you when you pray?

We create our own realities in our imaginations.

Imaginary playmates are as real as anything else that one can think up and believe in.

Might be that these imaginary friends are real, and not just imagination.

I wouldnt know for sure, since I have zero experience with these kind of things.

But I am open to that possibility, since it is true that kids are pure, their minds are relaxed, not attuned in their own individuality wich they never still fully develope at that age, so I guess their minds are observant and reactive of other things, wich we as adults subconciously ignore, but they are there all the time.

You know, it depends. Some yes, some no. It's part of being a child no matter how you slice it. There's nothing wrong with it.

My son has gone through this in situations where I believe it to be spirits, and some just the comforting imagination of an only child.

I think that when we reach an age we lose our gifts because the world doesn't want us to have it. Kids see more because their mind is open and untainted ny the world.

I believe they are something more. My little brother, who is 5 years old, claims to have a friend whom he calls Dude. This 'imaginary friend' is 50 years old and my little brother claims that his father died too when we attended a recent funeral. I do believe that they can see something we can't. And as to your question about why we can't, well as we become adults we loose the sense of imagination and open mind. We grow up to society's expectations.

When I was younger I saw a shadow person. For me that was very real.

I had a witch 'imaginary friend', I never saw her, but I would pretend she was there.

I always would talk out loud to no one in particular, but I would feel a presence there. I still do that actually.

My younger brother used to see some creepy stuff when he was younger. Don't know if he had any imaginary friends or not. He also saw a shadow person when I was with him, but I never saw it. I still wonder why I didn't?

some of the imaginary friends are creatures out of this world. in that case they might see a friendly other-planely creature in another dimension, Ouija board style only a Casper the friendly Ghost version.

its like when your cat follows something around the room with its eyes... and you cant see it. maybe your kid can see it too?im just guessing here.

well I think in most cases the child's imaginary friend is just that, an imaginary friend but when the child becomes more descriptive about it's appearance and gets way into having an imaginary friend like not socializing with other children when they are around then maybe it is a ghost something that actually exists...something that adults can't see.

I believe it's completely possible. Children can usually see ghosts better than adults, as children are still new to the world and haven't had society drill into their heads that "such things can't exist". I believe ghosts exist, but because of society and what they deem as "normal", those of us who have grown have a harder time seeing ghosts, while society sees the children having "imaginary" friends as normal. If you have imaginary friends and you're a child, you're normal. If you have imaginary friends and you're an adult, you're schizophrenic.
Another fault of society.
