I was studying the 16th century (among others)trying to find us in history and except for bull n speculation where are we?Where are we?Why are we not taught in schools? So many questions any answers are appreciated. We should be in history books as is everything else,as is in reality not fictional crap. Why when I trace my heritage, there are no Vampires.

Um...Probably because most people don't believe there are vampires, at least those who write the history books.

There's a lot of mythology in history. You're looking for your heritage, when you find that, look into what their beliefs and superstitions were.

It could be beacause history books are written from the point of view of the person writting them , and there is no hard proof of real vampires.

Whos 'we'? You keep saying 'we' are not in history books. We = people, I'm guessing. People are in history books, normally on the very first page.

Well Bigfoot, is mostly speculation, the same with aliens. There's "proof" here and there but no one is for certain. With Vampires, it's much more difficult for people to believe that a dead body re-animates and must suck blood to survive.

"History" books are keeping track of "Important" times in History. Most all history books are about times within "Human" history that made a mark or something that was discovered, invented or about something the "Human" achieved. If you want a book on "Vampires" or some other fictional characters, then read a novel.

Well, what about history being recorded in movies (1900's) and in books (pre-1800's)? Wouldn't those constitute being the modern version of 'history books'? In that respect, the history of the vampire and its evolutionary changes are being recorded as we speak; even if it is exaggerated, like every other story has been to some extent.

History has been written by the victors, it has been said. Let's start being these victors. ;)

Let me pose a question to you. Would your family admit if there was Vamp in the wood pile? I come from a family of Witches and Warlocks, yet that information is not in our family tree. Persecution for one's beliefs tends to lead people you barely know to judge you about something that they are not qualified to judge on. Wouldn't you agree?

In a perfect world we could just be ourselves, but history has shown what happens to those people who were just being themselves. The Inquisiton, the Salem Witch trials and so forth. If some idiot hurt someone that I cared about, there would be grounds for a whole lot of evil being introduced to the world. It may just be safer to keep this info buried or perhaps you can do deeper research on Vamps and then see if there is any crossover.
Best of Luck

Few schoolbooks I have seen include something about mythology or folk lore...Why would vampires be any different?

What people believe is up to them. Personally I would not want schools teaching my kids about Vampires or any other mythology...Let them research it on their own if they want.

If we are to trace history and examine folklore and mythology, we know that vampires are not welcomed. They are feared monsters who drink blood and who are not considered human. The incidents of vampirism are far and few in between when we look at historical documentation in civilizations around the world. The little bit of knowledge we have of historical vampires is questionable and unproven, so are you really surprised that you cannot find it in your lineage?

Schools teach mythology in History classes beacause they help to explain the progresssion of man from thoses times. Vamps have nothing to contribute to the general social developement of most people. The difference lies in the fact that at one time in human history, many people beleived in the gods out of ignorance. But there has never been a populace that believes in Vamps.

Probably the same reason that werewolves, ghosts, zombies, and other creatures of myth are not taught in schools UNLESS someone is taking a special course on such creatures of myth and legend.

Is this thread linking mythology and folklore vampires as being the same as modern day vampires? Because historically, many of our modern day psy and sang would not fit the description of vampires mention in history.

In my opinion...history doesn't dwell on lifestyles that some "normal" historians deem "not of interest" to the "normal" people. Anyone in history who lived the vampire lifestyle probably would disgust the majority of historians as J. Edgar Hoover's cross dressing didn't.

Hmm,Im not so sure I would want Vampire history in school books. For one, alot of times, there are many things left out,or simply incorrect facts. And for real, look at all the different legends and myths surrounding the Vampire, you couldnt even begin to put it all into a small chapter in a schoolbook. And even if you did, which one would you use? Which one is truth?Too much speculation.
I dunno,I just dont feel it would be a good thing to put in school books.

@ Oceanne, I whole heartedly agree.
I believe there are too many opinions and too much info for someone to sift through and try to organize into a compact chapter. Not that the myth of the vampire is not appealing but I have to be brutally honest here as always. When I was in school we didn't learn (out of our text books none the less) about stupid crap like Big Foot and "legends" in our academics. We learned the important stuff like chemistry, anatomy, physics, calculus and government (come on who are we kidding, government's not important, lol).
Things like vampire legend and the study of film noir, or even a class on Beowulf were available as an elective (I took every one of these and more) So Vampires ARE taught in schools, but not in an academic class, which, I'm sorry to tell you, is where they belong.

A lot of important things are skipped over in history books. I mean A LOT of things. The schools do nto teach everything either.

It took my school untill we were in 11th grade to teach us anything about the holocaust.... and everyone knows how big that was. So them skipping over other things does not surprise me one bit.

I have ancestors that helped to make america the way it is today with the trading system and who did a lot of exploring and trying to make peace with the indians, but he is not mentioned. (I saw his name ONCE in a MN history book and they didn't even really say what he did. All they did was say his name.)

history books never publish thins like that, they put t in the folklore section, because there is no based proof or fact, stating that such a thing is real, they censor alot of what goes into the books even today.

School curriculums are designed to enable students to learn fundamental tools through high school that is basic education. During the basic tools of learning math, science and English to be able to function as an adult ask yourself “where would you need vampire history to fit in?” You can further your education and go to University which there are a few that have vampire studies along with the paranormal if you want but that is on your dime not the tax payers.

Why are vampires not in history books...?

Think about it, if you went in and asked a teacher "Where did vampires originate from?" They would laugh at you and call you psychotic.

You also have to concider people want proof. Vampires in general are hunted so they are not going to glorify their existence to prove who, what, where, when and how just to educate the kiddies and for what gain? exposure to their enemies? which are us we are the hunted as we hunt them. Think about it.

Actually if I went into a classroom and asked one of the teachers where vampires came from, most of them would try to find an answer. Especially the sience teachers, they would have a hayday. lol (they would probably try to figure out and explain how vampires truely could exists and the whole shebang.)

That is, if they had the time and the students seemed interested. They would teach us a lot of other things along the way... I know because things like that have happened in class before. Depending on the subject and the question they can actually cover everything they needed to teach us through giving us the answer we asked for.

History is written by the winners. If humans have currently won the dominance of the planet then they are going to write the history according to how they see fit. If it vampires were in active planet dominance then they would write the history. Being the vampires are considered by most humans to be mythical, evil, and quasi-ludicras creatures that have not had any real impact on history (war, culture, etc) why would they bother writting about vampires? It would only instill fear and that which instills fear will cause the psyche of the average human, and that isn't considered healthy. So they just delete the idea, and lore of vampires from history. This is true with the exception of folklore.

why should fiction go inte history books? There is no proofs vampires exist. Same with what really happen after death. It is all belives not facts and therefore vampires dont is (and they dont have anything to do) in any historybook based on real things.

The history books are filled with ancient societies that drank blood. However, how many more books documenting blood drinkers have been distroyed by shallow minded society? My guess would be thousands. Because society looks down on the sang practice, they hide or destroy all the information they can.

I don't understand the need among so many modern living vampires that they have some kind of validation of themselves by the rest of the world. Why is it so important that everyone believe in your beliefs? This isn't meant to be cruel but there's no need to teach modern vampirism in history because it never apparently affected history. The vampire community declares of itself that beyond it's addiction to blood or energy, they are humans like anyone else. That means that their nature as such isn't historically significant. It's apparent to me that the main reason for desiring historical documentation of the 'living vampire' is to strengthen your own belief in yourself.

History text books are meant to teach people what has happened in history that has gotten us to the point we're at today. They aren't meant to teach about mythological or fictional creatures, or anything of the sort.

History books are filled full of limited knowledge. The only information you get depends on the agenda of the author and what he deems worthy. And it goes back to the old Santanyana quote: "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it". All knowledge is beneficial.

I agree that our history books are written from the point of view of the author..Perhaps no vampire published history books.

They left the American Indians point of view from our history book s for many years...Did you know the structure of the American government was copied from the Indians..

I was simply stating that many things get skipped over in history books. I was using that as an example. (and yes it is true.) It points out that vampires are not alone in being the left out of history books.

Okay one reason for you & us others notbeing able to look into history because very few people want to bother there time getting the knowledge of such things & some find it irrelevant to even bother about vampires & this site has a lot of people but very thin extra thin slice of the world thinking & population worth & about your ancestors the reason for that i believe is because not much was known about vampires back then as now & so it is hard to find any such data on that aspect in culture

Can't find the history because it's just that his-story most history is written by those who were trying to tell of events in their own words. Up until the days of camera's which helped a little but you could never prove the story true. The digital age has it's problems also because you can falsified thing with great ease....all it takes is one good photo-tech and a big bribe.

I think it may also have something to do with the fact that vampires were feared back then, and people tried not to talk about them and did not want to hear about them.

Instead of tracing vampires, try tracing the ShuttenJager, this found numerous results for my bloodline.

Most in society use vampires as a scapegoat for the "things that go bump in the night" expression. As well as ghosts, goblins, witch's, the boogeyman.

Many just pass these things off as simple folklore and fairytale, if they were truly "real" without the cover-ups from distinct parts of society, think about how the mass populous would react to it...To see an example, check out my profile...Not hyping the profile, just the movie within it.

Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny along with the tooth fairy and the boogey man are also not in history books that would be part of your curriculum. History or the teaching of is usually based on historical fact.

Perhaps you are taking the whole "vampire" thing a bit too seriously. Be a vampire, do what you must to fulfill your dark needs, but don't expect it to be in history books. That I'm afraid is bordering on ridiculous. No offense.

If real vampires were recorded as fact in history books it would make them so much more real to the general public and cause panic and more then likely hunting parties out for vampire blood so I don't see vamps not being in the history books as a bad thing.

If you really want a hint of proof then why don't you look at where the vampire myths generally came from. Then go through and look at your family history and find out what countries you came from.

It is not something that I was looking for at all but it kind of popped up in my face. Because I have Gypsy blood and also am part Turkish, Hungarian, Austrian and such. Vampires were known in all of those regions and I have heard it said that vampires and gypsies teamed together.

Really it was just an interesting thing to hear... I don't know if the thing about vamps and gypsies is true but... it gave me food for thought at the time.

Schools are only meant to teach certain things, asking why things relating to vampires are not taught in school is sorta like asking why is god not taught in school. In my opinion, only the things considered to be fact should be taught to our children in a public school. Anything else is, it is best for the parent to do.

Well theres a simple answer to your question. The victors write the history. Since there are no Vampires writing text books and most who do write text books are hard core right wing republicans history here int eh USA gets a hard core slant on it..

There is a lot that is fact that we are not taught in school. Or it is twisted. We are taught in school that a Man made the cotton jin but in reality it was a woman.

We are taught that Canabus is illegal and only told that its because pot is grown from it, but in reality the paper and fabric company's at the turn of the last century lobbied the government to have them outlawed as it infringed on their profits. Canabus is cheaper to grow and will grow pretty much any where , where there is sun light, or heat lamps.. LOL

You see we are told a lot of things but only from one point of view

Probably because history is something they want us to learn only when they are sure the people exist. If there are rumors but no proof they can show us many do not believe in such things as supernatural beings ever existing. Not just Vampires, but werewolves, fae, and so on. These are best explored in mythology classes or the likes.

I would agree fully Mistress,
to the victor goes the ability to write what happened.

look simply at the story of Cleopatra, the written story is that she commit suicide, however it is close to proven that a more likely story is that she was murdered by Octavian... so funny is it how the truth can be hidden through the ages?

From the beginning of time, history has been recorded by the victors, and then diluted or enhanced, depending upon the need of cultural or political expediencies, by the elitists of the society writing the history. It has been, for the most part the victims or the losers who have had to maintain their customs, beliefs, or traditions through myth and legend.
History has been written and rewritten to the point that even fact has become fiction.
History, like the news should never be a matter of opinion, political policy, or based on any particular agenda. Unfortunately that is rarely the case, and what passes for history, usually has as much (or as little) validity as what passes for the news.

Well, vampyres were mainly a cultural belief. Maybe that is why they are not written about in history books. Also, the only way it might have been entered in a history book is if there were mass attacks on people by vampyres.
