I'm sure this topic has been beat down in this forum, but I think I could give a new spin to this.

What are dreams to you?
Why do you think people dream?
And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?

Interesting. Dreams to me is something personal that is based om my hopes and inner mind. I think people dreams of that simple reason that the brain is active under the sleep. I mean the brain dont rest as the other parts in the body do. That is caused as i think if the person wake up sometime under the sleep and falls back in sleep without really notice he or she waked up but it is enough to trigger the brain to work. Dreams come from images and fantasyes and hopes the person have. Because the brain is a database with so much files so to speak. I think dreams are putted togheter with images the brain pics.

What are dreams to you?
I do believe that occasionally dreams can be the minds way of working problems out. However most often I believe they are nothing more than our imaginations running wild.

Why do you think people dream?
Some people actually do not dream at all. It’s unsure why some do not. Maybe dreams are our minds way of escaping our realities, or working through problems.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?
Our imagination once the body goes into REM sleep. Some events that happened throughout the day can be related.

They show you what your subconsciouses is trying to tell you.

Why do you think people dream?
Its a part of R.E.M. everyone musty enter R.E.M. or you will go insane.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?
Here is a good site to find this part of R.E.M. sleep

darknesswhispers,

Something you had said:
"Some people actually do not dream at all."

That is false, everyone dreams, everyone. Not dreaming would mean your brain is not working at all, which means you're dead.

A person may not remember their dreams, but everyone dreams. An average person can have about a million dreams per night.

You are right, some people do not remember what they dreamed of and others just do not know if they dreamed or not. We all dream just do we remember it or not?

I also think putting dreams under a formula or a "reason", such as "R.E.M", is also wrong.

I'm looking for personal answers from individuals, not something that someone "figured out" in a lab.

No one has figured out dreams, it's impossible.

I've made an article on dreams to submit to VR, and I'm just looking for individual answers as to what dreams are to you, from your own experiences.

R.E.M. is a part of it though. I know that dreams are something more something lab nor people can understand, for it is what is in us. But there is a part of us that the labs do know. R.E.M. is a part of it, in labs they can show you how much brain waves you have when you do dream, we are more open to things when we sleep then when we are a sleep.

Dreams are from are subconsciouses, they are what we push back and do not want to figure out, they are something are mind is trying to tell us to figure out.

What are dreams to you?
Dreams to me are the way that a person handles the days or past events. The dreams that I have can be night terrors or they are peaceful. But I do have preminitions of sorts in my dreams as well.

Why do you think people dream?
I think that people dream because of their subconcious(sp) minds. This part is always working and going through or rehashing something that happened in the past.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from? Well I answered part of that above. I think that some people dream because it was a gift that was given to them as a child.

My apologies I should have stated. The reference I made to all people not dreaming was intended as my opinion. I know that all the doctors, scientist, and facts say that we all dream during sleep. I personally just do not agree with this.

Wilder,

darkicewolf is correct, is does sounds as though you are having night terrors. Some medications are known to cause night terrors, if you are on any than I would suggest you let your doctor know about your dreams.

well I feel it is our brains way of summing up the things on our conscience and subconscience as it were ... we all have dreams and some have nightmares , night terrors and some actually have their premonitions through their dreams.. I know most my dreams are always warnings or a sign of something or another.

I also have dreams when I am stressed to me it is just my brains way of dealing with things.. just an opinion .I also agree with Xzavier that we should not discuss medical in the forums unless your a professional. I work in the labs and if someone was to just STOP taking certain meds it can cause more or severe problems .... Always consult a professional :)

This is more along the lines of the Psychoanalytic reason behind dreams.

* One theory suggests that dreams are the result of our brain trying to interpret external stimuli during sleep. For example, the sound of the radio may be incorporated into the content of a dream.

* Another theory uses a computer metaphor to account for dreams. According to this theory, dreams serve to ‘clean up’ clutter from the mind, much like clean-up operations in a computer, refreshing the mind to prepare for the next day.

* Yet another model proposes that dreams function as a form of psychotherapy. In this theory, the dreamer is able to make connections between different thoughts and emotions in a safe environment.

* A contemporary model of dreaming combines some elements of various theories. The activation of the brain creates loose connections between thoughts and ideas, which are then guided by the emotions of the dreamer.

Thesavageant- If I can't reply like the good scientist I am what am I supposed to say?? lol

I think dreams can be more than just Freud and neurotransmitters. There is a good bit of evidence that suggests dreams can be a form of non-verbal communication, interaction with entities and other "paranormal" things.

To me some dreams come from higher levels of consciousness and are a means by which we can advance and/or protect ourselves.

As for why we dream, if dreams are more than biology, then it would give some credence to higher forms of life, spirits, gods etc. And if they exist and we are connected to them, then why wouldn't we have the ability to communicate with them? Even if it's just temporary.

Good thread, and here's my two cent's worth :-)

What are dreams to you?

My dreams are a way of escaping the real world for a while and entering a realm where nothing can really hurt me.

Why do you think people dream?

We dream because we have so many thoughts and feelings running through our heads. A dream is a way of getting those thoughts in order and sometimes, making sense of a problem that may have been troubling us.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?

Kind of answered with the last question; they come form your thought processes and your subconscious. Your brain takes note of images and sounds, thoughts and feelings you've had and jumbles them all up in a dream.

I don't personally think REM causes dreams; I think REM is a necessary state, along with sleep paralysis, to stop us trying to 'act out' our dreams and perhaps harm ourselves.

Dreams or the energy's of our subconscious!
We use more energy when we are asleep than we do when we are awake and that is bacause our mind is constantly at work making dreams!
Our dreams are fantasies and they are also a way of letting out stress if you are worried about something you will have a dream that symbolises that worry!

I cant speak for everyone but for me, I think my dreams are just a simple way of telling me things that are about to happen. Usually when I dream about a birth, or death it happens. It runs in my family, but I think alot of times that dreams are just things that you fear or things that are on your mind before you fall asleep.

I'm only spilling out what I learned in my psycology class.. lol...

When you sleep, everything shuts down except for your brain... It can't shut down completely or you'll die, duh...
Anyway, it needs something to keep it busy. So, it takes things you've read, seen, heard, smelled, touched, etc. and brings it to life in your head... It gives smells a color, touches a taste, weird shit..... Every once in a while, someone may have a dream that may seem to come true (Deja Vu). Sometimes, people will "see" thing they think they've never seen before when really, they have.. their brain is just putting together different images to make something new to keep it busy... Kind of like when you make a drawing... you're not really creaing a new face, you're just making another one out of a bunch of different features you've seen before.... No one ever makes something new, it's all been seen before just put together differently..... That's all a dream is.... It's busy work, a way for the brain to play, a toy....

Dreams, to me, are a way my subconscious mind works out the business of my conscious life. If I have had some stress during the day, and felt I dealt with it well, chances are I will still have a "stress dream"...aka reverting back to my waitress days, not finding the menu, wrong table, customers moving around etc...to sort it out in my mind.

Although, sometimes, my dreams are prophetic. I had a re curring dream of my back molars falling out. I thought it was all due to my eating too much just before bed..but lo and behold, I had to have one back molar pulled, and the other I had all sorts of problems with.

I look forward to my dreams and enjoy them.

When I look back on my dreams, I rarely find those "working out problems" kinds of clues. I also don't buy the "random firings" theory. I think Xzavier's aliens theory is interesting, but "communicating" would be stretching the envelope for me...certainly if you mean a dialogue.

So, dreams are a mystery to me. At least my own are for me. But here's a teaser that I think about sometimes after a bad night when I try to convince myself that I am not crazy and the world has order...

What if we are like receivers when our conscious brains are at rest? Receivers that collect signals and try to decode them.

I know it is a simple theory. That is by design. If I elaborate, it taints the pure concept and leads to all the questions you might ask...all the questions I do ask after waking up and inventorying full and vivid dreams I cannot explain.

What are dreams to you?
My dreams vary from hidden messages to foreseeing things that will happen to me personally or one of my friends in the future. I have avoided many a car crashes, falling and so on because I had a dream of that day before hand and when the event does happen I notice similarities in either objects or places.
I do on occasion have those regular what the heck am I dreaming this for dreams though.

Why do you think people dream?
I feel there are many different reason people dream, to go into it would be a long drawn out discussion on my part because I use to dream share with people to help them to figure out the meaning of there dreams in relation to their lives.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from? Some save the subconscious some same the super-conscious. I personally think It steams from several levels of consciousness.

Dreams is a topic I like a lot.

What are dreams to you?
Anything, from hopes, fears and I would ignore the possibility of dreaming about past lives and having premonitions. Also I believe you can know your future from the symbols, usually they happen for real in my case.

Why do you think people dream?
For the same reasons I mentioned above, even just a thought you had before sleeping.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?

Uh the sub concious?

Interesting thread

What are dreams to you?

To me dreams are a way of escaping what is classed as "the real world", as in a dream anything can happen. Dreaming is part of your sub conscious you do not always remember what your dreams are about but everyone has them. To me they are a way especially when life tests us of escaping our current reality and going some place else

Why do you think people dream?

i think people dream to be in a different world that possible does not exsist in our galaxy

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?

Our sub conscious mind, as we do not use all of our brain and our brain never sleeps.

Dreams can be many things.
To me i guess they're messages or hidden subliminals trying to catch my attention.
Other times they are past life memories.
And sometimes, they are like a movie, strictly for entertainment.

Psi vampire summed up my formal understanding of what's going on with dreams.

But what everyone has said still leaves unaswered the nature of the "language" of dreams. I find the dreamworld language perplexing --- the seemingly symbolic, and mostly obscure, actions of the players, the inane exchanges.

Why don't we dream the way we think in the waking world?

Dreams to me are something that I think about before I fall asleep. and i think they tell something. either good or bad.

I think people dream because what would they be doing for the hours they're not conscious? I mean they dream because that's the way God wants people's brains to work... think about it... :P

I think dreams come from thoughts from the person's mind. like if they're thinking about ponies and rainbows, they might dream about it. or it could the opposite. think about rainbows and ponies, and dream about suicide and death. sooo i guess it all depends on the thoughts the people are thinking about... and all in all God provides the dreams..

What is a dream to me - Well it is to me what it is to other's, a surreal world that take's form when i close my eye's to rest.

There purpose - Suppose it depends on whats going on in life. Sometimes the dream happen's just to pass the time faster, or wake you into a better mood. Other time's, when you have alot fo crap to deal with, i beleive your dreams act as subconcious message's, pushing you in the right direction. Lastly, for such dreams in which you kill someone or do terrible things, i think thats an unconcious way of letting off steam. You may wake up so shocked by it that you rethink alot of things.

Where do dream's come from - I dont think we will ever know. My guess is that it does come from within ourself's. Maybe when we sleep we link into a multi-verse and relive past/present situation's of our counterparts. Wereever they come from, my favourate theory is that in someway we are connected to a higher concious on a personal level. Maybe theres a heavenly server out there in which we download and watch dreams that suit our current mood. Kind of like an ipod O.o

Great idea to revive this thread. :)

Dreams are a way to work out your problems, to let off steam ,to escape reality for a little while. Sometimes it may be a way to get a message to us from the spirit realm. Hopefully its something you can enjoy.

I believe that dreams are the manifestations of the things we see during our waking hours. When we rest the brain takes this information we have gathered and sorts it and edits it. It is kind of like a maid comes through our mind and tidies up after us. Puts everything away neatly. Studies have shown that when we do not get enough sleep, our brains do not function properly, which can be seen as if the brain is cluttered and unorganized. If we sleep too much, our brain becomes lethargic and then it has a similar effect.

However, when I dream about things I have never done before, I like to presume it is an energy that permits my mind to perceive a memory of an area or person or thing. This gives me visions of thousands of years ago, to the present, witnessing almost always moments of strong emotion.

So to me, dreaming is necessary and as of yet, it serves a purpose greater than my current understanding.

I think dreams are a way of your mind still running and not keeping you awake. I also think dreams are a way to our subconcious, like we would do something in a dream you wouldn't be brave enough to do in real life.

Reading all these posts under this one subject. "Dreams"

Most of what I read from all of you is true. Dreams are fantacies, ways of figuring out problems in the real world, fears, photos that your mind keeps and then mixes it in with other more personal things, your subconsciouses, and they are most definetly connections to the paranomal like spirits and such.
Dreams are obviously not just one or two things but hundreds and thousands of things.
So do not ask a retorical question like that. You should really ask what do your dreams mean to you.

To "thesavageant" : People don't always dream, when people don't dream then they are not all the way asleep, on a medication, or there mind does not have the energy to project the images to give them dreams.

SINcerely Rebecca♫♪

What are dreams to you?

I view them as a connection to my day, purpose and health. When they get overly vivid or disturbing, I know there are certain steps I need to do in order to regain balance. When they allow for deep restful nights, I know that I have a certain balance occurring.

Why do you think people dream?

Like many here I think it is our symbology or metaphors of ourselves being redone. I will not bore people here saying that I have dreams of what will happen, because I don't. However I tend to dream about future emotions in relationship to my life currently. Such as when my grandfather was dying, I had dreams about how I would respond. These helped me look at grief in a very different light. Typically when I remember my dreams there is something important happening that I am trying to work through.

And lastly, where do you think dreams come from?

I think dreams are a way for us to communicate with ourselves. We are constructed of so many different cells, and systems- still it is our "brain" that has control of our waking hours. For me dreams are a way for the rest of our system to have a say in how we see, and perceive.

i think dreams are what your minds telling you what you want.even if you have a weird dream or a nightmare in some way its showing you what you want in a different form.like if you have a dream where theres two birds flying it could mean anything.it could mean your looking for love or you want freedom.either way your still wanting something.

i think people dream to escape reality.a dreams something only you can expirence. you can have a dream and no one else will ever know what you saw.you can tell someone it but theyll never get to see it.

and i have no clue where dreams would come from.maybe you conscience or i dont know.

What are dreams to you?
Dreams are what our mind is telling us, that we may not want to know. Sometimes our dreams are our fears. Sometime it's our hopes. I mostly don't remember mine, but I know I have them.

Why do you think people dream?
It's just a natural action of the body when you go into REM sleep. It's our imagination at work.

Where do you think dreams come from?
I think it's just our imagination, hopes, fears, want, ect. coming out in our dreams.

People that have dreams good or bad have them uncounsiousely when their asleep and sometimes don't remember them. But the dreams that are remembered can be through a stressful time we have in our lives and sometimes by these dreams can can help us fade away from having an aweful experience that we have consciousely when we are awake and doing our own thing.

Ok guys before reading take a breath and focus! :) I'm a little scared to get more detailed than this because, well, VR doesn't support vast equations ;) So yes it may be overly simplified.

The vast majority of dreams are little more than your mind processing information, thinking for itself and making you drool.

However some dreams are more than that. They let you know somethings wrong or gives you knowledge you never knew before. These dreams enter the realm of new sciences.

Science can explain everything be it God, dreams, thought, magic or why your dog just pooped. There is nothing out of the reach of science, for in the end, it is everything.

Matter is made up of tiny bits of energy gathered in little bundles and they vibrate and give off energies. The mind is made of what...matter.
Thought is a process of chemical reactions and energy transfers.

When a person sleeps their conscious mind goes to sleep but the sub-conscious takes over. It is this part of the brain that gives us intuition, non-verbal communication etc.

Due to quantum entanglement (all matter and energy is connected at the same time) and the nature of time at the level of thought (physical size of thought) wonderful things can happen.

Dreams can allow our mind to, in a sense, tune into the ambient energies of the universe, which contains the thoughts of others. This also explains how people can have the same dream at the same time.

Sometimes our mind pops into a region of space with physical entities and a near one-way conversation can happen. They're mostly one way because our minds are still very undeveloped.

Other times we get to enter the realm of the gods (spirits, demons, angels etc)
At the level of thought, time (past, present and future) basically happens at the same time. Due to this various dimensions become open to entry (only entry of thought not the body).

In the same light as interdimensional movement and communication you can also end up knowing the past or future. Why? Because ALL time happens at the SAME time.

So through these scenarios we can understand how many of these "dreams" happen. It's all science and it's all possible.

I hope I made some sense, I'm rather tired.

I have one word that pretty much answers all the questions that were asked in this thread..and that is your subconscious.

I have read in dream books and such that it is your subconscious mind telling you a message...it is just interpreting the message being sent to you.

If you are wanting to learn more about dreams Barnes and Noble has a very good selection of books that you can purchase...and I am sure there are many more available online.

Okay, So far I agree with most of you especially "Xzavier".

For those who think that everyone dreams, you are wrong. Not everyone can dream. I know that for a fact. I think the reason being is because sometimes the mind is just to tired or the person was just not thinking when he/she fell asleep; in other words they had nothing on their mind and just kind of fell asleep. Oh and sometimes people don't fall asleep all the way they are in an extreme zombie like state that is another time when people don't dream. Some people do in that state of mind but others don't.

I really hope I am making some sense. lol

Well, one of my thoughts is that everyone is more perceptive than they know. That we can know things before they happen, and see the unseen world. Psychics are just people who are more connected to their senses. Dreams are images conjured by the subconscious mind. Sometimes it will show us what we want, what we need, the future and anything else that our heads contain. Things that we can't access while awake.

To me, dreams are all those deep thoughts in my head that never present themselves while I'm awake...

Sometimes I think people may dream as a release from reality - I can dream of monsters, dinosaurs, things like that, and then dream of seeing people whom I haven't in years, and it just feels so damn real!
Then again, sometimes I just dream weird stuff cus I've had too much to drink / eaten something wierd etc.

Dreams can come from loads of different and varied places within the brain I think - you can have imaginative dreams, and dreams in which you get something which you simply long for...

inuyasha1...in response to your post...from what I have read about repetitive dreams is that it is due to a problem we are having and it is the subconscious trying to deal with it..it could be a dilemma or stress...it may not seem like it is bothersome on a conscious level but is opened up and revealed on a subconscious level..usually if someone is being chased or stalked in a dream it means that they are running from a problem instead of facing it. I hope that helps. I am not expert but if you want to learn more I would suggest searching articles online about dream interpretation to get a better understanding.

Dreams to me is a peek into another world. I don't think it's simply our thoughts or desires, but something different entirely. I also think that dreams have not yet been put into any accurate "formula", and they shouldn't be. It's always good to have a little mystery in life.

Would there really even be a formula to dreams? I don't really think so. All dreams are different. They have no base substance because they're formed during sleep by the subconcious.

If there were indeed a formula it would be simple in my opinion.

It is my belief that all human beings have a telepathic like to each other, like one big network. Perhaps, this network is only accessable when we are in a state as relaxed and deep as sleep.

Dreams can be formulated by your mind as a way of solving problems, but have you ever noticed that in dreams like this, people you know tend to appear?

I believe that that is that persons subconcious trying to help you, using this network to transmit messages and images.

all three questions can be answered in my first answer.
a dream to me is a way for the unconcious mind to work on things in our lives that we can't when awake.

I think dreams are another dimension, like if you die in your dreams it is said you will die in real life that is just an example of what I mean.

Alice in wonderland kind of stuff all weird.

I think dreams come from things we fear or we think of that day.

Isn't it possible those dreams that make no sense [well, some of them] are like a puzzle that's trying to tell you something? That needs be figured out?

Very much possible. Your mind has a lot going on and sometimes we forget to listen. So once we finally shut-up our brains are able to try and communicate with us through dreams.

Xzavier...I do agree with you in that during sleep our brains are shut down to outside interference and is able to process things on a different level.

Dreams could be a way of communicating ideas and thoughts that we would not be able to process during the day when there is so much activity going on.

With us only using 10% of our brain then maybe what occurs during dreams can be using what we do not yet know about the brain and all of it's functions.

Dreams are mearly a consequence of the release of hormons inot the brain creating an environement to allow imagination, memories, phantasm and also fears that we know have and are unware of having.
