Here is an interesting parallel subject for those interested in vampiric activities. I was surprised to only find one thread in my forum search that even mentioned this.

From Wikipedia.org:

'The Chupacabra or Chupacabras is a creature said to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated particularly with Puerto Rico (where it was first reported), Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities.

The name, which translates literally from Spanish as "goat-sucker", comes from its reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Sightings began in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s, and have since been reported as far north as the Carolinas and as far south as Chile.

Though some argue that the chupacabra may be a real creature, mainstream scientists and experts generally contend that the chupacabra is a legendary creature, or a type of urban legend.'

I'd like to know if any of our Hispanic members have any family tales to share with us about this subject.

My friends and I were conversating on this matter once... Some say that it got free from an experimental lab that caught fire at one time... I do remember the lab fire being in the news but they never disclosed what ever got free from the lab.... The fact that it was a genetics lab has me thinking though...

Sounds interesting. But like all other mystical creatures that they say are out there. No one knows for sure but it had to originate from somewhere.

So there could be one or something like it.

they are every where in south texas the stories I mean. It has even mad the local news. the reports of sightings and dead cattle. The last one was in dilley texas where a rancher claimed to have killed one but, it turned out after the wildlife dept. investigated that it was a rare breed of hairless mexican dog that has blue skin. so that is that until the next sighting in south texas.

I hear first time about it, when the movie 'the mothman prophecies' came into the cinemas. they listed a few urban legends and mythical creatures. I guess every nationality has their own myths to explain things that cant be explained rational. like the yeti/bigfoot or nessie, the ogopogo in canada (i have seen it btw :P )

Whatever the case may be- someone or some thing is behind these case of dead, blood-drained livestock- investigators/skeptics believe it to be a cult. Even though some people may use it as a scary 'story' for kids- actual killings are happenings. By who? Well, the Chupacabra has the same reputation as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster :)

Yes, the goat sucker. About 10- 12 years ago there was rumor/sightings/drunken illusions, that one was running around in Miami.

Also, big in Puerto Rico and Mexico. An episode of the X-Files was devoted to this creature. There has been a movie on Sci-Fi within the last 6 months dealing with the subject

Interestingly, the Chupacabra is the focus of my second expidition, right after the Mokele-mbembe (check my profile for details).

Descriptions range from a seven foot tall beast, to a three foot tall (baby?) goomba. It is said to be the reason for all sorts of bad happenings, including cattle death, and yes, child dissapearances (good thing you behaved yourself and grandmother's huh?). Interestingly, it is one of the few "mythical" creatures to have reported activity in all weather but mainly (though not always) at night, lending creedance, at least to this guy here, as to it's realism. It is reported to have no real care whether the blood is human or animal, as there have been reports of human attacks, usually ending in the creature being scared off before it can sink it's teeth in. Credable sightings (on continent) extend from mid-Mexico to south Texas, with other, less credible reports coming in from as far north as Oklahoma. Sightings of the creature have been the subject of stories for generations, ruling out the possibility that it is a lab experiment gone wrong.

Thats all I can remember off my head, (my notebooks of all things supernatural is back in the states) and some of it was jogged by you guys. Feel free to add what I forgot and whatnot.

I found this on a website:

EL Chupacabra

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Bernard W. Kelly Sr. (bernard@theshadowlands.net)

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States Of America. Its golden
sun and white beaches have enticed tourist for years to this vacation
paradise. Just off the coast of the state of Florida. It is a short airplane
flight to this Island of delight.

In September of 1995, the first sighting occurred when Madeleine Tolentino
and other eyewitness described what has become known as the El Chupacabra or
the Goat Sucker in English. The eyewitnesses described the creature as being
a cross between a kangaroo and pop-culture conception of a “Gray.” Its height
was about 4 feet tall with a large head, a lip less mouth, fangs and lid less
red eyes. Its body was small and it had scrawny clawed arms and webbed bat
wings and muscular hind legs that appeared to be shaped for leaping.

Michael Negron a student at a local university said “I was looking off the
balcony one night, and I saw it step out of a bright light in the back yard.
It was three or four feet tall, with skin like that of a dinosaur, it had
bright eyes the size of hens eggs, long fangs and multicolored spikes down
its head and back.”

The predatory habits of the Chupacabra have always been toward livestock such
as Chickens, Rabbits, Goats and other small backyard livestock. IT kills its
prey through a single hole, which all of he blood is then removed from the
body. To date no humans have been killed by this creature even though many
have attempted to trap the creature over the years.

In March 1996 the Spanish - language talk show Christina, aired the story
about the El Chupacabra, and immediately following the airing of the show
there was an explosion of sightings from Mexico and the United States.

The El Chupacabra although seen by many has never been photograph and to this
day we have nothing but the eyewitness accounts and artist renderings.

Could so many eyewitnesses, be so wrong?

yes, I was living in Miami during that time.

I watched the National Geographic documentary a couple times. Whatever the case, the death of livestock is happening. We either have a bunch of people who are lying about the sightings along with having all their favorite animals dying, or there is something to this. It could very well be a cult causing the unexplainanble deaths. Cryptozooliogists confirm the animals were not killed by any known predators. They were not the marks or prints of anything we've discovered so far.

The only true, fake thing (oxymoron) is that some people are involved in hoaxes. the deaths are real, and simply unexplained. And we do have multiple countries, different cultures, and people who have not met who say the same thing.

I remember when I lived in Albuquerque NM, I heard numerous natives talk about el chupacabra. There was even a newspaper report about dead livestock around Santa Fe and some Native Americans believed it to be the result of el chupacabra. Hell, I saw plenty of strangeness in NM...it wouldnt surprise me if this myth was indeed fact.

Believe it or not, I'm actually going to step up to the plate here on this one.

http://azaz.essortment.com/goatmanlegend_rhcn.htm

I found this link among many others which I will list below when researching the this topic. First of all, the above link discusses something or someone called "The goatman" whom was supposedly mistaken as a monster, and thus where the Chubacabra legend originated from.

Kinda weird if you ask me. lol

http://skepdic.com/chupa.html

Here is another link to the "skeptic's dictionary" and interesting little peice on the Chubacabra.

http://www.supernaturaluniverse.com/staticpages/index.php?page=chupacabra

This link discusses the Chubacabra on a website called "The Supernatural Universe"

I wasn't too sure about this one either. However, ( and I will get to my opinion eventually....promise. :) The basics were all there.

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/6280/chupa.html

There are some more little stories and such.

My opinion on this whole thing.

I was raised, on horror stories and such about the Chubacabra. Very interesting stuff. I was told about how they were so smart, they could open doors and unlock things.....they could understand human speech and it's patterns but not speak it themselves. They could smell fear....etc....these creatures were highly overrated. Blood red eyes...7ft in height. Considered very dangerously to farm animals and human alike. They were also considered canivores, hot just blood drinkers.

Yep....well I'd go on about what I think, but you get the main idea.

The Chubacabra is a hard one to touch down on, hard to say yes or no to it's reality. :)

Apparently, and please dont stike me down on this.

These creatures were placed on earth by extra terrestrials for research purposes.
People have reported seeing these creatures around places where UFO's or other paranormal activity in the sky was reported to be found by numerus people such as farmers and country folk.

There is a movie coming to theatres I saw the trailer for. The pretext is they are on some small cruise ship and an unknown animal attacks most on board.

As I watched the trailer for it, the Chupacabra came to mind.

However, Hollywood has given it wings and surprisingly, a very 'vampiric' looking bat image...lol.

I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the film now though.

On one of my Python DVDs there's a trailer for a movie called Chupacabra. However, the creature they show preyed on humans on some South American riverboat... That's the only time I ever heard of the creature, which in the movie, was portrayed as big as a human.

Saw this special two nights ago on the Discovering Channel. "Alien Vampire." Why does things always have to come from space? One of the investigaters claims it is a CIA experiment that got loose. Another guy is collecting hair samples and foot prints that are being left at the scene. All samples are turning out to be that of a dog.
If anyone claims the dog is from space, I will hit my head on the keyboard. :O

I have watched several documentaries of scientist searching for the legendary creature, as well as other such similar creatures. People who have even claimed to have seen it and described it and they all seem to say the same things, much like the people who claim they seen aliens. Descriptions and stories seem to match in great detail, I wonder if these people all live in the same trailor parks or know each other so well that the stories being told are growing such as a rumor would with 1 detail changed for each person. It's not like me to think that such things dont exist because of the things i have seen in my life but its weird that every story i see is like listening to a recording over and over again but each time its a different voice.

An artists rendering of the Mexican Chupacabre

The Alleged Texas Chupacabra.

**WOAI Channel 4 first broadcast the discovery of the Texas Chupacabra in July 2004. A rancher in Elmendorf shot and killed the creature after it attacked his chickens. The animal was hairless, except for a strip going down its back, with blue-grey skin, a long, rat-like tail, a serious overbite with large canine teeth, and appeared to be suffering from mange, a chronic skin disease of mammals cause by parasitic mites and characterized by skin lesions and loss of hair.

Several months later in October, another animal resembling the "Elmendorf Beast" was shot and killed and several sightings were reported in Lufkin stirring another wave of WOAI Channel 4 chupacabra broadcasts.

Before its latest northern migration, alleged attacks of the Chupacabra, or "the Goat Sucker," first appeared in the 1960s in Mexico and Puerto Rico. An impressive series of attacks plagued the Mexican livestock in the 1990s and the Chupacabra was termed "the single most notable cryptozoological phenomenon of the past decade" by America's leading cryptozoologist Loren Coleman.

The beast preyed on livestock, usually goats and chickens, and killed the animals vampire-style, draining the blood completely through the animal's neck and leaving the meat intact. Consequently, there is some controversy surrounding the idea that the Chupacabra attacks humans. A homeowner caught a glimpse of the creature after the Chupacabra allegedly broke into the house through a window, tore apart a child's Teddy bear, and left a pile of slime and a piece of rotten meat on the windowsill. One woman claimed she was attacked by a beast with horns and wings. From the bite marks on her neck she believed the beast was a Chupacabra. Another physical attack was reported in Guanica, Puerto Rico. Osvaldo Claudio Rosado claimed he was grabbed from behind by a gorilla. He was later treated for cuts and scratches on his torso. What makes this attack so mysterious is that Puerto Rico doesn't have gorillas.

Though eyewitness accounts vary, the Mexican Chupacabra towers at a ferocious 3 to 5 feet, with bulging, red eyes, a snake-like tongue, gray skin, long, spinal quills, and a sulfur-like stench. The Chupacabra also boasts multiple talents such as the ability to fly or bound like a kangaroo

My take on El Chupacabra is that it is a either:

a) A vampire whose thirst for blood has driven them so much that their bodies have begun to reflect the feral and primal desire for blood. Perhaps it is an outcome of vampires who have deprived themselves of blood for so long (or drink blood too often that they are even more dependent on blood)

b) Chupacabra is an alien- From reports to reading of your posts, I can also safely conclude that it may be an extraterrestrial. It has the big almost insectoid eyes characteristic to that of a Grey alien (the typical alien stereotype that has been brought into the mainstrema media), it is completely hairless (another common theme from alien abduction reports descriptions of the extraterrestrials), and it seems to be small in stature (not an alien trait per se, but still viable) at least from what I can gather from my own ideas and the few pictures there supposedly are of it (the famous "Milkbone" parody and the one just posted by Ishta).

Just my thoughts.

as a child I lived in both mexico and puerto rico with my grandparents. Let me tell you. I was scared to death of the Chupacabras. Especially because where i lived in Puerto Rico (Vasquez) there were a lot of missing dog issues running around thus the chupacabra was a very real thing to children. So when my grandmother told me to be in bed before the chupacabra came to get me. Hells yes I listened. But the description of what one is varies so much from person to person.

My grandmother told me it was short and thin with big eyes long nails grey scales with spikes on his back.

my grandfather said it was more like a big wolf thing with red eyes and a forked tongue.

so either way the way I saw it was there was something out there waiting for me. So I was pretty scared.

I myself believe that , like others have wrote, there are small bits of truth involved with most all myths or urban legends... However, the family that lives above me here in my apartment complex are from Puerto Rico. We were just speaking yesterday about the whole Chupacabra sightings thing. (funny how that happens isn't it? You talk about something you normally don't and then all of a sudden that subject is every where around you) ANYWAYS... This family truly believe in the Chupacabra. They claim to have lost live stock back home, and they are actually afraid of the Chupacabra.
They asid that some people live in suck fear of El CHupacabra that they won't allow their children to play near any live stock, etc. To them it is a malicious demon, and some feel that Chupacabra is controlled by those who practice Black Magic. They say that the beast is sent out by these practitioners to harm those who have wronged them....

all of you talk about the chupacabra like it was something new, like it started to exist ten years ago, but the legend of the chupacabra is old.

some of you posted that their grandparents told them about that creature... so you see its not about 20 years old myth..

the myth of the chupacabra goes back to the old aztek culture that was spread over latin america and the south of the usa. in their mythology existed something like the chupacabra and it is still alive like a lot other myths and traditions. the hispanics integrated their old believs in the christian believ and so the chupacabra was born and still alive..

if it really exists or not is not known

Genuine Blood- I don't doubt you that there are histories or folklore from other countries that involve livestock victims of some kind of vampiric nature...

I was just saying that the term Chupacabra is first used in 92. Obviously with the global folklore for vampires out there, some of those countries had livestock as victims. That's why I mentioned the rain forrest 'mosquito man' legend. No apology necessary.

el chupacabre= a mythis creature, one that sucks the blood or liife force from it's victims in attempts to gain supernatural power to sustain it's own life....why not ,there are lykens, goblins, dwarfs, trolls, every myth is derived from one truth or another, who's to say that they are not just another form of a vampire, possibly related to the nosferatu, cuz they are some ugly vamps,my grandfather supposedly was attacked by one and it killed my great grandfather, and y the hell does it attack mainly hispanics, must be a rascist vamp, lol

MstJuan - of course since that's the "skeptics dictionary", you may get some blowback from those that are really keen on the idea that it exists. To quote your source, "Nobody wants to read a story with the headline: Chupacabra turns out to be Chihuahua."

The ol goat sucker eh? I have heard of them. I also heard they can only kill very small farm animals. I seen a movie about them on Sci-Fi. They made them out to be man eaters. LOL -It was pretty damn funny. I have most likly hit one with my car while drunk. Come to think of it, so have most of you I bet. :D

You are one of the most intelligent people posting subject matter on the forum. I wish to thank you for that. I have a problem with dumb people who share their stupidity with the rest of us. I have heard the legend of Chupacabra. The first time was from a Cuban friend of mine.

This is an interesting subject....I don't believe myself in this creature not to say it doesn't exist..I rather tend to think that maybe Vampire bats are in these areas..I don't know this as fact as I have never studied vampire bats...The siteings might be something strange something they couldn't explain

well, I believe there is some truth to it, but it is a story so how much truth to it depends on how much you believe in it.

MstJuan - I tend to agree with you...though too skeptical is just as bad as blind faith. Both require a closed mind.

Mikhail - Vampire bats typically don't kill because of the tiny quantities they actually feed on. Also, a vampire bat doesn't really leave to 'suction holes'. They bite an actual wound and then lap at the blood like a cat. To have a dead farm animal exsanguinated (bled dry) and to have a couple of suction marks on the beast...seems to require a different type of predator...that being said, a lot of the autopsies (as MstJuan pointed out with his article) end up being dead for a variety of more natural causes.

**I put this in the same unsolved category as UFO's and certain forms of spiritism - if there is truth to it, it's been so horribly muddied by pranskters, fanatical believers AND fanatical unbelievers, that we'll likely never find a truth that will effectively end debate on the subject.
