Stigmata, a mark?, a symbole? What is its purpous, its meaning? whats its goal?
Did the person want it? or deserved it? Is it always religious related? Or can it be simply caused by the mind?
Throught the ages, throught the religions, throught the culture, throught the races, stigmatas have appeared for many reasons on different people, no one can actually establish a rule or reason that is above all a certainty to explain why one is having a stigmata and not another.
I could always list all the known stigmata, but it would still not explain them, so my questions here is simple, why? how come? and most of all why this answer? Would it be possible to decid this stigmata is real, and this one is simply cause by a psycosomatic reaction or auto-mutilation. If you see, or if you have seen a stigmata, did you beleive it? or were you sceptic? did you have doubts? Do you think it is link to the spiritual realm? Or simply to our faith and beleif? Do you consider it can be done by supernatural entities? Demons? Spirits? or even Angels?

Please elaborate your answers, post saying one line comment with no real adition will be deleted by dominars.

I personally believe that stigmata is psychosomatic. Someone either believe so much or disbelieves so much in the existance of god and it manifests in their body. It is the same as a woman who wants children so badly or doesnt want children so much that her body will believe it is pregnant and begin to show the signs even though there is no growing embryo.

i dont think that there is an explaination i was raised catholic and it was suppose to be a sign that the soul of that person was a pure one of god or jesus if u will
i think that if a person really believes strongly and is very spiritual that it can be brought on by mind over matter i dont know for sure if i can believe in it as a sign from god or whatever
some of the stigmata blood letting is not even on the hands as in a true crucifixion but one never knows there is more out there than meets the mind

I also was raised Catholic, but have since recovered.. lol It always seem to be associated with saints or God's chosen prophets. However, I'm not sure if there is any truth to it... perhaps these people inflicted these wounds upon themselves so they could feel the suffering of Christ I do not know anyone personally that had experienced stigmata...So I am not convinced as of yet.

This is a difficult subject. I mean most consider stigmata to be a catholic religion oriented thing....

Well I being druid do not buy into the receiving the tortures Christ went through to be an honor.... I don't dispute that there could have been a man named Christ, but I do not follow his teachings....

I cant really tell much about a stigmata, other then to say...... we need to find the roots of it, find the origin of it... the first recorded one, or what was happening at the time of it...... I mean seeing as the Church took so much from the pagans, there is always the possibility it could have something to do with that even.....

I was brought up catholic too and although I don't know a whole lot about stigmata's the church goes out of its way to disprove anyone that displays the phenoemum. I agree with boneyard I think its a psychosematic thing and brought on by religious hysteria.

I do remember though that no one has ever had all the 7 wounds of Jesus if they do they generally bleed to death. There is a movie called Stigmata and the film makers did the film justice by actually following the teachings and beliefs of stigmata's.

I was also raised Catholic and from what I remember in sunday school they said that the Stigmata was a symbol for Jesus being nailed to the cross .. That someone very holy would develope this because they are so connected to god. Often the person who was aflicted would find they also had the power to heal people . I have no idea what others were taught or told but that is what I can recall...

I never agreed with the interpretation that the recipient is pure of heart or what not. My interpretation is that their god is testing their faith to see if they can bare the wounds that their savior bore for them.

There are only 5 stigmata wounds as Soulshroude said.

It is also possible to just feel the pain of the wounds and not actually have the physical presence, this is called invisible stigmata.

It is interesting to note that there are no recorded cases of stigmata before the 13th century which is when the symbol of the crucified Jesus became popularised. It's also interesting to note that stigmatics commonly place their wounds at the hands, because this is where the symbol of Jesus crucified shows the nail to be placed, instead of the wrists, where the actual placement would have occurred.

My personal opinion is that it is all religious hysteria and self inflicted. There are mental diseases such as Munchausen's Syndrome where people purposefully inflict wounds on themselves in order to gain attention.

I was always taught there were 5 signs so sorry to discount anyone just from what I remember of my catholic lessons.

The first is the nail holes in the wrists,
second nail holes in the feet,
the third is the crown of thorns,
the forth is the whip marks on the back
and lastly the spear stab in the side.

From my recollections no one has ever recieved all 5 stigmata's. And the spear stab is the most dangerous and brings about death.

Also those that recieve the stigmata aren't always necessarily holy or truly devout, but come about as a result of the community losing faith and needing a reminder of the power of god.

Many of those that have recieved stigmata's have been given saint hood by the church, St francis of assisi is the most famous of the recipients of stigmata.

Here is a link for more information for those that may be interested.

during the period of time after chirst their was a rumor and it might be true i dont know for a fact when chirst was crusified he had been whiped then had a crown of throns placed on him and had his feet and hands nailed to a cross and his knees caps busted the catholics say some people get stigmata as a gift from god wich they will suffer the same as chirst did on the chorst everything from bleeding from the eyes wrist and ankles even as fare as whipe marks on their back but no factual evadense has been recovered of anyone being attacked the the indivduals who have stigmata is said that they actualy live it out and react like
they are being beat and even cry in marks it cant be explained some people think it paranormal ohanmanone or a curse or just some pist of person castin a spell or just a man or woman wanting attention but their still is no proff their you have it stigmata

I think from what I've read, that some many claim it to arouse attention. It's more often disputed than claimed as fact.
"Psychosomatic" ... hrmmm ... probably "self inflicted" I could agree with that much easier.

Knee caps broken, brings to mind his climb up the mount to the place where he was crucified. How then, could he have gotten halfway there with no help? This I think would be speculative.

As has been mentioned before, no cases were mentioned before the 13th century which leads me to think that the stigmata was either self inflicted or a product of the mind.

No matter how odd it seems to us now in this day and age, then, it would seem people in religious orders especially considered this marking as a blessing.

Sometimes a high price was paid for piety.

I can actually imagine how real it was for some people......and to quote a much used phrase in these threads.....who knows ?

For other senses of this word, see stigma and stigmata (disambiguation).
Stigmata are bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus. The term originates from the line at the end of Saint Paul's Letter to the Galatians where he says, "I bear on my body the marks of Jesus," with "marks" in the Latin Vulgate rendered as "stigmata." An individual bearing stigmata is referred to as a stigmatic.

The causes of stigmata are the subject of considerable debate. Some contend that they are miraculous, while others argue they are hoaxes or can be explained medically.

Stigmata are primarily associated with the Roman Catholic faith. Many reported stigmatics are members of Catholic religious orders. The majority of reported stigmatics are female.[1]

I see many will link it to religion, but can we link it to logic? or science or to supernatural action?
Btw I do not mean any offence or disrepect to any religion here, I am simply trying to find the most point of view and opinions and taughs possible on the subject.
Plus I beleive the stigmata are not only in the religious known area, it must be hapening in non religious or non known religion groups, or is it exclusive to religious groups?
Again I mean no disrespect I am simply seeking to know and learn.

I believe that stigmata is really just a person with an evil spirit inside them who likes to inflict pain upon it's host

or a very confused and hurt spirit

I would think that an angry spirit or entity could be causing stigmata, at it might be even a way to ether comunicate their anger or to simply show their emotions and make sure they are not ignored, would be possible.

There is alot of controversy on this and i myself even am not sure, Yet it is wierd that how some people just have these inflictions just appear on their bodies, so maybe it is a spirit or angry demon that is lashing out and using this persons body. It has always been interesting to me so I would like to one day really know if that is even possible.

There are so many diffrent opinions of the stigmata but, if you go by catholasism(sp) they that it happens because the person is so close to godliness that its bestowed upon the..which I think is a cock and bull story..why would such pain agony be bestowed upon anyone..So I believe as some of the others that have posted its mind of matter.

Its hard to figure out if Stigmata is to be a gift or a curse...on one hand i would say that it is a gift, but then again how could it be a gift when there is so much pain involved in it. Then there is the curse..., but if you love someone then how could you curse them?
I think that only thoes extremly close to God could recieve that.

I have always thought that when a person had stigmata they were pure of heart and soul, but honestly i think that stigmata can be caused by a persons mind, i think that a lot of people believe in is so much that they make it happen to themselves...

A person can have the mindset to pick up a car off of their kid when they are trapped and i think the same applies to the stigmata, people can have the mindset to make it happen...

From what I have read on the subject, it is where someone exhibits wounds, simular to those Jesus wore. Supposedly, the number of actual people showing stigmata on the face of the earth at any one time is equal to the number of the Apostles, but have nothing to substanciate this with.

I suppose it is possible, although I have read about people who, when hypnotised, coulld cause welts to rise on their skin in the form of words, so it is also possible that it could be a combination of both.

As for automutilation, if watched carefully, it could be caught.

many have mention mind over matter, could it be possible then that the mind fo another cause this to a third person?

I mean for expemple the mind of a parent who sees their child as a perfect or divin child could cause it using their own mind, witout realising it?
Not intentionnally but still causing it?
Or any other person for the matter, that has strong mind.

Why would anyone want to purposely submit theirselves to those kinds of wounds,to believe themselves closer to God,only people that believing to atone for their sins must inflict their bodies to purify the soul,I believe in Stigmata,it exists,facts could be produced if we could get into the Vatican files which I would give anything to be able to do plus on a lighter note..I had stigmata when I was injected with Dilaudid when I had Pneumonia,very strange sight for the doctor to see me come outa that bed like I was on a cross..No offense to anyone though.

Not necessarily.. it has been proven that those who have received the stigmatic gifts are either complete believers or complete non-believers. It goes back to the mind-over-matter subject. If people believe SO MUCH in something, they will consiously or not work towards that.

The Stigmata is supposed to weep the blood of the Anointed one, so if you were to test the blood coming from these wounds and compare them to the host you should be able to determine if the affliction is real by whether or not the two blood types or genes match up. I think I saw that on T.V. once.

Let me start by saying that I am a skeptic of Stigmata. I know that there have been many so called cases with witnesses that have been documented. Stigmata is the kind of thing that I would have to witness myself before I could be a true believer. I do think that if there is anything to Stigmata it would be psychosomatic. It would either be injures caused directly by our own thoughts or it would be someone concisely harming themselves to look like stigmata. If you ask me I think Stigmata is an attention getter and nothing more. I do have an open mind though. If I ever saw it with my own eyes from start to finish I might believe.

There have been historical stigmatics that were known to have faked wounds, such as Magdalena de la Cruz, who admitted the fraud.

Similarly self inflected wounds can be associated with certain brain disorders. Some people who fake stigmata suffer from Munchausen syndrome which is characterised by an intense desire for attention. People with Munchausen hurt themselves or fake an illness hoping to end up in a hospital where they can enjoy attention and care. Information from: www.crystalinks.com

I don't know that stigmata are real. I was raised Catholic and taught to beleive if all matter of things such as demonic posession, excorcism, miracles based on saints artifacts etc....

People do many things to themselves for attention or because of their beleifs. I think some give themselves stigmata at a sub conscious level. They may even be scitzo and not know one of their personallities is doing it. They may just plain be cutting, like so many folks do today.

I have never seen a stigmata in real life, it would be interesting to see though.

When I was in grade school, I went to a Catholic school, so they taught us that it was some kind of divine sign from God. That it was an honor to have the same marks as Jesus in your hands, side, and feet.

it is strange you came up with this subject i was reading this artical the other day i hope this helps you out ...

Stigmata
Stigmata are wounds or skin blotches that resemble the crucifixion wounds of Jesus. Some people believe that they can appear spontaneously through a miraculous act of God. But the evidence often suggests natural causes, such as self-wounding or unusual medical conditions.

Most stigmata take the form of wounds, sores, or purple skin blotches. Some of them have the shape of a cross or a circle, and some reportedly glow in the dark. In a few cases they aren't even visible, but are known to be present from the pain that they cause.

Whatever their form, they are usually found on the hands and feet, on one side of the chest, and on the head, shoulders, and back. They can persist for different time periods, from a few hours to many years. In a few cases they appeared on Good Friday and vanished on Easter morning. Some types, such as blotches or blood marks, never bleed. But real stigmata wounds can bleed, although they may only do so sporadically.

The word "stigmata" was used in ancient times as a name for marks that were pricked or branded onto the bodies of slaves and soldiers for identification purposes. The word was also applied to religious symbols tattooed onto members of pagan cults to show their devotion to particular gods and goddesses.

The first known use of the word with reference to the wounds of Christ occurs in Galatians 6:17, where the Apostle Paul says "I bear on my body the marks of Jesus." Biblical scholars aren't sure what kind of marks Paul was referring to. Possibly they were the result of wounds he'd received from scourgings and stonings by people who opposed his teaching. But another possibility is that he intentionally inflicted wounds on himself in an attempt to experience the same pain that Jesus felt.

Attempts to re-experience the suffering of Jesus definitely took place during the Middle Ages. Writings from that period contain many reports of mystics deliberately wounding themselves for such a purpose.

After self-wounding became common, people began to hear stories about wounds that appeared spontaneously. One such case involved Saint Francis of Assisi, who died in 1226. It was said that his stigmata became present two years before his death, and that his hands actually appeared to have nails in them.

After Saint Francis died, other reports of spontaneous stigmata began to appear, and have continued to do so ever since. Near the end of the nineteenth century an investigation by Dr. Antoine Imbert-Gourbeyre (1818-1912) identified hundreds of cases that had occurred up to that time. And the rate of occurrence seemed to increase during the twentieth century.

In some modern cases, people have reported that they went into a trance in which they seemed to be nailed to a cross, and when they awoke they found the wounds or markings on their bodies.

Many Christians believe that the sudden appearance of stigmata is a supernatural sign that a person is very close to God. According to some reports, the miraculous nature of the wounds is verified by the fact that they don't respond to medical treatment, but can suddenly heal without treatment and without leaving any scars.

Some stigmatics say that they gladly suffer from the pain because their sacrifice helps pay for the sins of other people.

Stigmata are sometimes accompanied by other unusual phenomena such as powers of prophecy and the ability to live without any nourishment. St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1381) reportedly went without water for an entire month while her wounds were present. And Angela of Foligno (1250-1309) didn't eat anything for twelve years except for what was offered at the Eucharist. Other associated phenomena include visions, trance-like states, and tears of blood.

Many people doubt the claims about supernatural or miraculous causes for stigmata. One reason for this is that none of the reported miraculous occurrences has ever been documented by strict scientific methods. In addition, there may be natural explanations for all of the reported phenomena. Here are several possible explanations:

--- A person could inflict wounds on himself while in a state of religious ecstasy and not remember doing it afterward. Failure to remember a self-infliction could also occur if an alternate personality temporarily took control of a person's body and created the stigmata.

--- Another possibility is that intense prayer or deep meditation could bring about a psychosomatic reaction that causes the wounds or marks to appear. This process, sometimes called "psychogenic purpura", has been investigated clinically, and there is some evidence that it can actually take place.

--- Some people have secretly wounded themselves in an attempt to get attention or look pious. One well-known example was Magdalena de la Cruz (1487–1560), who eventually admitted that her wounds were a hoax. In a modern case, carbolic acid was reportedly applied to the skin to create blister-like wounds. Another way to create fake stigmata is to paint them onto the skin, and several people are known to have used this method. The use of painted-on markings could explain cases in which the stigmata have unusual shapes, or glow in the dark, or appear to heal without leaving any scars.

Another reason for suspicion arises from questions about the locations of stigmata on a person's body. For example, many scholars doubt that Jesus even had any wounds on his hands. Available evidence indicates that the flesh of the hands isn't firm enough to hold a body on a cross, and that the nails were normally driven through the wrists instead.

Stigmata occasionally appear on individuals who aren't considered to be pious. Other people sometimes say that these stigmata are the work of the Devil.

Stigmata has always interested me...
I have hear of it in various religions, including Hinduism.
I agree with what others have already said - I don't believe that the torture Christ received was honorable or a blessing or anything good at all... However, if people receive this stigmata, there must be some kind of message in it.
So I do believe it... I just think there is really no explanation for it. There have been people who were faking it, and it was proven they faked it... Others are so surprising to see that they can't be fake.

I was raised Catholic, and learned nothing of Stigmata until I was in college. The Catholic church really does seem to frown upon it, or they would teach it in Catechism and Confirmation classes. I am not sure if there are any documented authentic casese, but do know that there are a numbeer of documented fraudulent cases of stigmata. It's hard to say for sure.

By the way, the dispute between 5 or 7 signs can be easily explained: the hands could easily count as 2, and the feet also could count as 2.

I don't really believe in stigmata unless I saw it with my own eyes. Personally I think people may have inflicted wounds on themselves to make it look like they're having this stigmata for attention or whatever purpose they did it for.

here are fact of people with the stigmata and the suffering they go through.

Stigmata

Stigmata is spontaneous manifestation of bloody wounds on a person's hands, feet, forehead and back - similar to the wounds of the crucified Jesus. Those who describe stigmata categorize these experiences as divine or mystical. History tells us that many ecstatic bear on hands, feet, side, or brow the marks of the Passion of Christ with corresponding and intense sufferings. These are called visible stigmata. Others only have the sufferings, without any outward marks, and these phenomena are called invisible stigmata. The infliction of stigmata is called stigmatization.

Healing is usually reported within a few hours after the wounds appear. Some people who suffer from stigmata report feels of sadness, depression, weakness, their body in physical pain, prior to the bleeding. The blood will pour forth from openings on the body for an unknown amount of time -then just as suddenly disappear and heal. The openings can be just in one area of the body - such as the hands or feet - or in several areas of the body at the same time. The person is almost always in pain and discomfort when this occurs.

There have been over 500 reported stigmatics who have displayed wounds similar to those inflicted upon Jesus. The first recorded case of these wounds was in the year 1222, by a man named Stephen Langton of England. Saint Francis of Assisi first suffered the wounds in La Verna, Italy, in 1224.

Other famous stigmatists include Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint John of God, and Saint Marie of the Incarnation. The most famous stigmatist of the twentieth century was Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (18871968).

Stigmata was more recently experienced by Brother Roque (19681996); a novice in the order of Los Hijos de Los Hijos de La Madre de Dios (The Sons of the Sons of the Mother of God in Villavicencio, Colombia; and Canadian Lilian Bernas who began claiming to exhibit stigmata in 1992.

There have been historical stigmatics that were known to have faked wounds, such as Magdalena de la Cruz (14871560), who admitted the fraud.Similarly self-inflicted wounds can be associated with certain brain disorders. Some people who fake stigmata suffer from Munchausen syndrome which is characterised by an intense desire for attention. People with Munchausen hurt themselves or fake an illness hoping to end up in a hospital where they can enjoy attention and care.

People also fake stigmata knowing that some who had stigmata were declared holy by the Pope. In this way they try to gain recognition. Self-inflicted stigmata heal naturally.

Though some people feel stigmata is psychosomatically induced, this is rarely the case. Stigmata can affect women as well as men. The blood may be of a different type than the person who is having the experience.

Classically, Stigmata appear at as many as five locations of the Holy Wounds, namely the hands or wrists, feet, and side (often fatal), and other wounds endured during the Passion, including:

Wounds caused by a Crown of Thorns, although sometimes invisible
Whip lashings or scourging on the back
A wound in the side, caused by a spear, or lanceNail holes in the wrists, or hands
Nail holes in the ankles, or feet
Formations of the flesh in the form of nails: the heads of the nail being rectangular and an inch on the topside and the tip of a nail on the backside, usually curved in as if hitting another surface.
Supposedly, a real stigmatic exhibits the wounds in a five-part series. Each series is separated by a length of time, only to repeat again like so: A; A,B; A,B,C; A,B,C,D; A,B,C,D,E. At the end of each sequence the stigmatic is sometimes known to smell a specific type of flower; see also odor of sanctity.

Also, according to experts, the blood seeping from the wounds of the individual should be the blood of Christ, thus yielding two types of blood from one wound.

There is debate over the historical method crucifixion, if nails were driven through the hands or wrists. Stigmata appear on the hands of some stigmatists, and the wrists of others. Skeptics see this as evidence that the wounds have a human origin rather than a divine one, as divine wounds might be expected to be more consistent. The odor has a smell of jasmine.

In supposed real Stigmata, the blood flows freely and cannot be stopped with traditional medical care. Faked Stigmata are superficial and heal quickly. Blood will appear fresh and of a bright, deep color. The blood flow will often go against the laws of gravity. The stigmata are usually received with states of extreme ecstasy.

In his paper on "Hospitality and Pain", iconoclastic Christian theologian Ivan Illich touches on the phenomenon of stigmata with characteristic terseness: "Compassion with Christ... is faith so strong and so deeply incarnate that it leads to the individual embodiment of the contemplated pain". His thesis is that stigmata result from exceptional poignancy of religious faith and desire to associate oneself with the suffering Christ.

The stigmata theme has been used in several movies, TV shows, and books.

Other Famous Stigmatics:

St. Francis of Assisi (1186-1226); nails appeared in his wounds.
St. Lutgarde (1182-1246), a Cistercian;
St. Margaret of Cortona (1247-97);

Bl. Catherine of Racconigi (1486-1547), Dominican;
St. John of God (1495-1550), founder of the Order of Charity;
St. Catherine de' Ricci (1522-89), Dominican;
St. Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi (1566-1607), Carmelite;
Bl. Marie de l'Incarnation (1566-1618), Carmelite;
Bl. Mary Anne of Jesus (1557-1620), Franciscan tertiary;
Bl. Carlo of Sezze (d. 1670), Franciscan;
Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-90), Visitandine (who had only the crown of thorns);
St. Veronica Giuliani (1600-1727), Capuchiness;
St. Mary Frances of the Five Wounds (1715-91), Franciscan tertiary.
Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), Augustinian;
Elizabeth Canori Mora (1774-1825), Trinitarian tertiary;
Anna Maria Taïgi (1769-1837);
Maria Dominica Lazzari (1815-48);
Marie de Moerl (1812-68)
Louise Lateau (1850-83), Franciscan tertiaries.
Of these, Marie de Moerl spent her life at Kaltern, Tyrol (1812-68). At the age of twenty she became an ecstatic, and ecstasy was her habitual condition for the remaining thirty-five years of her life. She emerged from it only at the command, sometimes only mental, of the Franciscan who was her director, and to attend to the affairs of her house, which sheltered a large family. Her ordinary attitude was kneeling on her bed with hands crossed on her breast, and an expression of countenance which deeply impressed spectators. At twenty-two she received the stigmata. On Thursday evening and Friday these stigmata shed very clear blood, drop by drop, becoming dry on the other days. Thousands of persons saw Marie de Moerl, among them Görres (who describes his visit in his "Mystik", II, xx), Wiseman, and Lord Shrewsbury, who wrote a defense of the ecstatic in his letters published by "The Morning Herald" and "The Tablet".

Louise Lateau spent her life in the village of Bois d'Haine, Belgium (1850-83). The graces she received were disputed even by some Catholics, who as a general thing relied on incomplete or erroneous information, as has been established by Canon Thiery ("Examen de ce qui concerne Bois d'Haine", Louvain, 1907). At sixteen she devoted herself to nursing the cholera victims of her parish, who were abandoned by most of the inhabitants. Within a month she nursed ten, buried them, and in more than one instance bore them to the cemetery. At eighteen she became an ecstatic and stigmatic, which did not prevent her supporting her family by working as a seamstress. Numerous physicians witnessed her painful Friday ecstasies and established the fact that for twelve years she took no nourishment save weekly communion. For drink she was satisfied with three or four glasses of water a week. She never slept, but passed her nights in contemplation and prayer, kneeling at the foot of her bed.

I think stigmata is a state of mind in which someone wants to feel like they went through what christ did because there really in the dark like the rest of us, it is the mystery of iniquity.

No it doesn't prove anything.

Anything unexplainable in nature was turfed over the church in G_d's department. Must be a sign...etc. Just about everything physiological that happens to the human can be explained in a scientific manner.

Stigmata
The phenomenon of stigmata is the miraculous appearance of wounds, like those of the crucified Jesus Christ, without any natural explanation.

i do agree with you there really is no proof to know if one has even had the stigmata because for all we know it could be self inflicted

Should mention that these marks were about the size of a half dollar us. Could very easy be seen as puncture marks if you didn't know better.

Well, I have never witnessed a stigmata first hand (excuse the pun) but I believe there could be something behind it. Coming from the direction of pseudo-christian beliefs, is it not impossible to believe that this could be caused by a divine manifestation?

As they say, god does work in mysterious ways after all. I have witnessed a few supernatural things first-hand, ghosts, poletergeists and the such, so to me it is not impossible to believe that Stigmata may actually be a supernatural/divine manifestation.

So yeah, thats my opinion.
