A warning to the site
A 12 year old girl and her 23 year old boyfriend have been charged with the murder of the girls family in medicine hat alberta.
Why does this concern a vampire site you ask? They met on a goth/vampire lifestyle site, and I am seriously hoping it was not our nice little community here, but the site name is not listed.
Exerpt from the Edmonton sun"Friends of the grade 7 girl said she had recently turned into a "goth" after meeting the 23 year old online at a site dedicated to goth and so-called vampire lifestyles"
The 23year olds name is Jeremy Steinke....normally I would not place a RL name in here...but it is publically available in the news reports so I see no problem. The family were said to be good church going people, so I thought I would offer this heads up on the possibility of a beginning witch hunt here folks...as this occurred ony a few hours drive from My location...

regardless of my general dislike for the odd person on this site..at times like this we must follow a saying, me and my brother against my cousin...but me my brother and my cousin against a stranger...meaning us goth/vampire types must occationally place aside our differences....this is one of those times

There are kooks and criminals out there in all walks of life... being goth doesn't make you a murder any more than being Christian makes one a saint, being a scientist makes one logical, or being a gun owner makes one a murderer.

I don't think we have anything to worry about, my friends. #1 there are millions of vampire/goth culture based sites for meeting people... it could be any of them. and #2 Even if it was on here, they couldn't do anything to this site, it is not like we all togethere planned the murder and knew it was going to happen. I hear them talking about myspace all the time on the news about how there are sexual preditors on there and so on... it's still running and climing to the top, so i really don't think the media is going to hurt our community in a way that would shut it down. the only thing i see possible is a couple extra glances and glares than usual in public as well as maybe a couple of people creating profiles on sites like this just to redicule people for being the way they are.

vr is like the myspace of the dark community heh. there was a case here in pa where some teen girl and her older boyfriend offed met off myspace and then offed her parents.

I don't feel that VR is in danger but I hope the proverbial witch hunt doesn’t begin in earnest here in Canada. There are people who openly hate the alternative community here but I have yet to see open persecution from the government. That would be hell.

And as usual cause a thing like this happened,no matter by who and where,the most who are seen from a negative eye are always those who are in the gothic/vampiric culture.

once again we are labled as the " bad people" i have had this happen before in my area, people went around as "gorths" and "vampires" and started alot of problems in my area. distroying things, harming bistanderds, for a while they were the talk of the town. bolth me my friends and my girlfriend at the curent time were acused of doing this seeing theres not that many people wair im at that are goth and are a vampire, but all of us proved to be inasent. i mean just because we all dress alike, or act alike, or hel even are alike, it doesn't make is al bad people. does it?

So, does anyone else wonder if this is what "Chaz" was referring to when he made his post about "the feds" descending upon VR soon?? Just a thought.

Another Article

This one names the site they were on, which is NOT a Vampire site. It's a gothic/industrial culture website. I happen to be a Site Admin there and when we see things like that, we delete it, but since we have over half a million members, we can't catch everything all the time.

It's not the sites fault, not any site should be liable for the actions of a user. This girl clearly had NO supervision and faulty parents. If they'd been watching her internet activity and such, talked to her, paid attention to her, then maybe this would not have happened.

In the winter of 1989 and early 1990 there were a few suicides in my hometown...all those involved were into the occult....thats all it took for months of police interrogation, psychiactric reports and media hype spanning the entire continent...anyone who wore black or had any occult interest was questioned..harassed....and ostracized...

Well this isn't a new thing with online communities we've all heard horror stories about Myspace and yet even with them giving the option to be able to make younger users profiles only available to their friends it still happens. Also i was in Alberta not long ago and my friend did some research while i was there and there are messages boards solely for the gothic/vampire community to meet up and you can easily find these sites on google!
It will be difficult if VR is named in the investigation, but i don't think they will close the site down...
But unlike myspace, Vampire rave makes a fair bit of money for political and influential people who have shares etc; in the site. And if they name the site then it will be marred with a bad reputation which is quite sad that the actions of a few reflect on so many.

and whos to say there going to target us intierly? theres more then one site out there that has a ncie camunity such as this one, trust me i go on 5 diffrent sites on vampires and what not. this doesn't mean that there is going to be some one watching this site 24/7, as far as i can see this it wont even tuch us let alone cause a isue with in our comunity

And if it shuts down the other site, the one they met on, it would be no great hardship. That site is full of poseurs and wannabes anyway. Kinda like faceparty for rock music. But i'm worried that sites like this may start being investigated....where will it all end? Can't they accept that people follow their own choices and aren't all easily influenced by websites? Credit us with some common sense...

yes this is the key word here " yet" and nore do i think theres going to be. the net conists of over 45 billion web sites about 75% of them are meaningless stuff such as porn. but this doesn't mean that there WILL be a witch hun, if they would they would have to hit EVERY site out there consiting with vampire's and goths, this would take WAY to much time for them to sort through everything.

Us on the other hand think that they will try there best to single out the site in which they met and publically trash the lifestyles in which us and other people chose to live.We think that they will search there computers and check out any matching sites pertaining to the lifestyle..

First things first, Vampire Rave is an Adult Web site. And second the minimum age is 13 yrs. I also very much doubt that the "vampire/ goth" thing will come to much attention. Most times the media looks at internet group sites in general. They will not give "free advertising" or attention to a site such as VR. Although they may ask parents to "Block" sites such as this one.

This type of thing isn't anything new if you been around in the community, Vampyre community long enough. This is why a lot of members have night Side names that we go by, to make sure we are picked out of the site by people who could or tend to try and harm us. Those that go about getting a person to change their life style and such and have them do things for them, in a not so good manner, tend to hurt themselves and get caught.

So this isn't really anything new, just keep yourself on the Down Low, don't do anything ot draw attention to yourself and you will be fine.

Sorry, did not mean to imply that it wasn't. Just that it usually comes down to media telling parents to "watch your children." And schools making sure goth sites are blocked. Predators are everywhere. The shopping malls near me were the first to limit underage kids for hanging around without an adult with them during certain hours. Thanks for the warning.

Daermon, I figured you'd be doing a post on it. I saw the Ed. Journal article which named vampirefreaks as the site they frequented, so I wasn't worried that they were from here; however, I AM worried that the general public will confuse the two sites.

Canada has to make a media circus out of it because they are so damn boring they have nothing better to do...I do not believe it will effect any site at this time the events in the world will make it seem little.. choas is at hand the new day arises...

And to add, I'm not sure who else experienced it, but after Columbine and Taber it seemed like everyone wearing a trenchcoat around here was getting questioned by the cops. I expect that as far as the "pedophile" thing, it will lead people (read: ignorant) to assume all goths are pedophiles. I expect more routine ID checks at goth clubs by law inforcement and the like. well from my run in with the media at my job which most of you know i work for FEMA , i was sent to louisiana, and no matter what the admin says the media will torque it to what they see fit, they always do and have, the media will cry ifyou sue them to "infringement of rights", but if you think about itits the media , its like the saying guns kill people , thats not true people kill people and i have seen alot of the violence first hand, i thik there are personally some very stupid people, so as we do with the terrorist i would say just keep a watch out, and if you see something funny or hear of something funny, let the proper people know, but keep in mind people will always Fear that in which they do not understand, they have have for years , and always will look at the goth community as differently, we have fought and won before we can do it again.

as a mother of a teen on this site i do not mind at all that there is people checking up on the site to keep this from happening again....

it is a sad thing that they have to blame it on the type of site they were on....

but my daughter used to be on neopets when she was younger and had grown men message her and try to get conversations going with her about things adults should not discuss with kids...

The second article posted says they met on vampirefreaks. Yeah, I can definatley see the possibility of media backlash there. But, this site's saving grace from the media will likely be its size. The media is claiming over 500,000 members on VF. We have under 10,000.

I really can't see VR beeing shut down....we don't advocate killing your parents....or anyone else for that matter...just because we as a community love dark things does not mean we sit in waiting for the right time to commit atrocites against the general public....it is an unfortunate event that has taken place....but these things will continue regardless of ones preferred lifestyle....and as for vladthegreat....I'm so sorry for you....that you prove to be just as small minded as media...pity really

Absolutely, salem was bad enough, we don't need a modern day version here. The fact that most people don't believe in vampires will be a double edged sword. Many won't, but again many will.

I don't think we're quite to that point, and freaking out will only make things worse. The most that has happened thus far are a few police investigations, just a reminder to everyone that they need to be careful and sensable.

People need to place blame when horrific things , such as this happen. That is the one thing that bother's me about people who point fingers at websites while the child is a minor.

They make things where websites can be blocked by the parents. The parent's do not take this step so the finger gets pointed at the website.

People then start to feel the website was wrong because she was only this age and what not.

I have heard it happen many times on myspace. The person was such an such of an age, come to find out there were a minor. The person they met happened to be over the age of 18.

It is also sad because now people that dress,act, or even partake in gothic lifestyle around this area are probably going to be shunned and questioned.

People like this are everywhere. I don't think a lot of minors/adults know this. Maybe because they are young and very niave. Or older and do not have the knowledge of being cautious online.

I think it is a terrible thing. People need to watch/help each other. No matter what the group is. Goth, Punk,Preps, etc...
Especially if they are younger and niave to meeting people online.

Parents need to watch thier children more also.

I feel for the friends and the remaining family of the victim.

and I was one of dozens who got this treatment when a few suicides occured close together and all three kids were interested in the occult in early high school, after that anyone who wore black, listened to heavy metal, or wore any religious gear other than crosses got harassed for over a year, the city council even banned a movie that had an occult theme from playing in town that summer.

Yeah it sucks that there are people out there giving goths and vamps and such a bad name. But in all honesty have you ever thought that maybe people like us need to start changing that? I mean, what if people took a stand and started giving our little subculture a good name?

Instead of saying "oh look they stereotyped" us "we always have a bad rap" why not do something about it like get a bunch of your friends together and do something for your community? I know it sounds kinda stupid but unfortunately goths do have a bum rap for being all gloom and doom so I say change it.

When i was in college I was in a community service sorority yes yes I know it doesnt seem like a very "goth" thing but I never said I was goth I prefer not to fit in any real box. But yes I wore bondage pants and listened to Atreyu and Slipknot. But I think that people saw what I was doing in the community and realized not all of us are bad people. (sorority girls and "goths" lol)

the police are considering criminal sex charges against him depending on further investigation.....apparrently tho he is only one in a string of older guys this girl has dated...so i think she is not to be considered an innocent either....I knew what I was doing sexually at that age....so there is no reason she wouldn't have

and back in 96' Roderick Ferrell who was 16 and living in Kentucky. After playing Vampire the Masquerade, he formed a "vampire clan". He and some friends would meet in grave yards and exchange blood. A girl who was a friend of his in florida asked him for help. The extent of there convesation is not know outside of court but the end result was the brutal murder of the girls parents. He and his clan were caugt when one of the members let it slip to her parents where they were going.

Needless to say life for people like me became hard as hell for awhile. Got stoped by cops about 12 times after that happend.
For the goths and vamps in Edmonton canada will have a tuff time ahead of them.

its what edmonton needed to get a goth scene going again. a nice push to get some momentum even if in the wrong direction, they will need to thrive in order to get where they want to be. Police in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, have asked Nexopia.com to take down items after two people, one of them, a 12-year-old girl, were accused of murdering a family of three in Medicine Hat.




"Are you stalking me? cuz that would be super" and "WelcomeToMyTragicEnd" were posted on Nexopia.com by the girl, says the story.




The other accused is a 23-year-old man, "whom friends have said sparked a romance" with the 12-year-old after meeting her on VampireFreaks.com.




"Both sites have been previously named in connection with tragedy, including the trial for the murder of a 12-year-old boy in Toronto, and security scares, such as high school hit lists that have surfaced in Calgary," says the Globe and Mail..




The girl, who looks much more mature than her age, and Jeremy Steinke, both of Medicine Hat, were remanded in custody yesterday, it says. They were arrested in Saskatchewan after Marc and Debra Richardson and their son Jacob, 10, were found dead in their home.




VampireFreaks.com features items by people, "with user names such as SuicideOfLove, TeenageOddity and RottingNails who share feelings of depression, loneliness and anger mixed with gallows humour," says the Canadian Press.




"In recent weeks, the Grade 7 schoolgirl had abandoned her clean-cut look for a darker, Goth style with heavy eyeliner and makeup."




"Vampirefreaks.com is brought to you by FuckTheMainstream.com," says the site.




"You must be atleast 13 years old to sign up for this site. You may not create multiple profiles. Nudity is not allowed. Do not start any trouble or drama with other users on the site. You can only post pictures of yourself, do not use other peoples pics as your own. Any text or pictures that you store on the site must belong to you, you are not allowed to use any copyrighted material. No racist, sexist, nazi, prejudiced or otherwise ignorant imagery or text is allowed on the site. Your IP address is being logged, failure to abide by these rules will get your account deleted and you will be banned from the site."




The FAQ says it's the creation of a Brooklyn youth who started it 1999 when he was 15.




"I was just getting into the industrial scene, and I would draw random drawings and graffiti in my notebooks during class, just something to do when I was bored," says the author.




"One of the prevalent things I would write would be 'Vampire Freaks', which I thought would be a cool name for a band or something, as I was also really interested in vampire stories at the time. And around the same time I also would draw a version of the VF logo, but with jagged teeth in it. So when I decided to make my own website, luckily 'vampirefreaks.com' was not taken so I decided to use the name."




In 2004, "My son, Joshua was born," the FAQ goes on.



"A month after his birth, the new version of Vampirefreaks was complete, I called it 'Vampirefreaks 2.0'. I completely revamped the vampirefreaks website, and made it a new interactive profile website, programmed in php. The new format allowed anybody to join and post their pictures, compared to the previous system where I had to review everyone's picture submissions and only choose a select few."

what is wrong with people these days?

This is truely horrific and abhoring but what we must look at in this is not the fact that a minor lied about her age and joined a webforum that allowed her to move into a relationship with an Adult.

But the fact that this Adult let it happen. He is the one at fault here, he got into a relationship with a 12 year old knowing it to be both immoral and ilegal.

On doing so they are said to have carried out these crimes.

The crimes they both should be given a fair trial and sentenced accordingly at the end of the case.

However the 23 year old should also be sentenced as a peadohile for the relationship as well as carry much of the brunt for the other crimes they commited.

His age alone shows us that he could of used his experiences in life to stop these atrocities in the first place.

Being an aldult he is the one that insdicated the offences and had the power to intervene and stop it happening.

Vampirefreaks I know for a fact has certain criteria on becoming a member the girl lied to gain membership so then cannot be shown any blame for what has happened

There are millions of communities of different types out in the world today, and unfortunately none of them are immune to crazy people. It's tragic what happened, and I wish there could be some kind of a way to prevent things like that from happening!

The crazy people can be helped...but what will you do about the large number of stupids that walk on the face of the earth? People, lets not make too big a deal of this. I agree it's horrible. The guy has some serious fucking issues no doubt. The girl's parent's didn't pay enough attention to the girl. But getting too wound up will be premature.

I speak with the knowledge of living it. I'm 6ft 500lbs and never really fit in. Piercings, tattoos, black clothes, priest cassocks, occult studies, outspoken pagan. So it's safe to say, I never really fit in. Everytime something retarded like this event happened regardless of what "genre" it touched, I was usually "known" to be of that group. That doesn't even include the fact that I'd gotten in trouble numerous times as a child for improvised munitions.
