Because magic was feared in ancient times, do some find it difficult to use certain magic skills because of limited resources. I've heard a comon complaint about this, has anyone had a simular issue?
Ok, are you talking about Magic (the stuff used by people like chris angel) or "magick" the stuff used by religions and ritual and so forth?
Hey Sis I got this one! She is talking about Magik. the other is a trick of mind and eye.
she is inquiring about whether or not there are those that practice magik that is finding that there is so much of the lore that has been lost? Has anyone feel that due to the witch hunts and the practicing in secrecy, the deaths of the druids, and the lost of the egyptians, and the lost of so many of the Societies, and ancient civilazations that where known for the mystical practices that some of the magik that was used long ago has been lost and do you feel the lost of that magik?
I don't and won't let anyone dictate to me what I can and can not do. I am comfortable with my abilities and gifts. To judge and to be judged. That was then, this is now. I say express yourself, so long as no one is harmed.
Bring knowledge back to society, if they stop fearing. Then they may understand.
There's always going to be a loss of magick and alterations to certain spells over the years.
I am not a magic user. but there is a lot of magiks that were lost due to the fear and ignorance of a few people.
Thats exactly what I was trying to say Sis (PV). SatinMist I'm glad u r proud of who you are, although do you find it diffucult to practice what you do, being that alot has been lost though time?
I have found it very hard to practice magick due to the lose of so much knowledge. Even the brief glimpses of My past lives are not enough to enlighten Me on some of the things I wish to know. So yes, I do find it rather rough to practice magick. I know I have the ability to do most of the things I feel I can do and some of it I can do. But alot of it is lost to Me due to the lose of so much over so long a period of time.
I still believe that society only fears magick users and what they can do because what they can do goes far beyond their normal comprehensions.
Deathnitegrl Edit:Please try not to flame other religions.
And I would say that it may have been more practical back then (for healing etc) now we have so many options.
I belive that there is not enough knowledge on Magic and there is a lot of misunderstanding about it whatever it's the reason.
I also find it difficult to find the tools I want to.
I know that it only upon you to practice magic and it doesn't matter which tools or books you have, but I think it is nice to know more about on what you are doing and seeing the differencies between types of Magic.
In my own opinion, I do think a lot of lore has gotten lost due to oppression, conquering peoples, etc., through the ages. Just for an example, think of what may have been lost in the destruction of places like the Library of Alexandria?
One thing I've found is that available magickal knowledge has also become watered down. But I've also found that the spirits are great teachers.... so it's not completely lost....

i am a magick user and i have found that some resources are limited especially in countires that don't have a magickal background and in some cases lots of knowledge is lost. But the spirits are really a great help.
due many of inquistions on the part of two of the largest sect of religion, and not to mention witch hunt hysteria in the middle ages. there is a lot of magick that has been lost and that will never be retrieve. there are many different paths that have been totally lost. I know that there are many who feel it.
I am not a magick user though there are those in my family that are. It is a recurring theme throughout history.
Starting as far back as the Sumarians. some of the civilizations that were based on the use and harnessment of magicks fell due to fear and ignorance.
My own people also suffered for this lack. As we have lost many a storyteller and these special people were the holders of our history and magicks, and our way of life.
The use of Magick, is just differing levels of energy manipulation...While spells and rituals are interesting, thay are not necessary...It's about Awareness, Knowledge, and the Wisdom to use them properly...
Enigma, I completely agree with you. Magick, or magyk as I call it, is really just the control of energy and the will to use/harness it. Those will immensely strong fortitudes find it easier to use this type of magyk, but some actually can harness massive amounts of energy just by using repetitive spells(rituals/long-term spells) and such.
I am may not be a Practitioner anymore, but I do know a great deal about the use of magyk and other forms of energy manipulation. If anyone has any questions, I can probably answer them to a satifactory degree.
Anyways, the various magyk forms that seem an endless variety are all rooted in one common form: Sorisk v'el Crith, The Path of Elements. It's a very old, almost forgotten magyk; it took me several years to track down a text that barely mentioned it and offered little information, but I do most of what little is left. Unfortunately, the last surviving copy of the text was locked away in St. Peters bascilica in Rome. I would have very much liked to have seen it before me for closer examination of the text.
I do not have problems doing the forms of magik that i do
I believe that alot of reading material about it has been lost! However, I think that it is inside you! You don't need a spell or certain tool! Use whatever tool or saying you feel! Someone created the spells & rituals to start with! All they did was look inside themselves & say what they felt! I feel like if we all look inside ourselves to find the answers, then we will! As others have said spirits also help guide you! I think the spirits are guiding you to find your way, & your own true self!
Some rituals and traditions have no doubt been lost with time but since I believe magic is the manipulation of energy, we still have the ability to perform it in different ways.
My blief is that yes previous knowlage has been greatly lost and much has to be rebulit as in the darkages for total progress. however, one must find their own way to manipulate the Magick(energy) inorder to produce a desired effect. everyone is different yet the comon factor would have to be your will to do such a feat. With control much can be produced if your will is strong enough.
It is my beleif that much knowledge ABOUT magik has been lost but not the magik itself. It waits for us to unlock its mysteries.
yah i live in the bible belt, and sometimes i want the "toys" of this "trade" and theres only one metaphysical store around here, and its like 40 miles away and they always seem to be closed when i have a chance to get there
Some of the history of Magik has been lost and can never be regain although It has came back.. Like my ancestors reglions. It will return will time harder and stronger than before that shall be a good day!
it is true that some of the more feared forms of magic, but remeamber there are some forms that should be feared becareful what wisdom you seek
Magik is as Magik is.... The fear lies in the person and the fear that that have of what will happen if they use such things..... it is only lost if those that can don't and those that don't know aren't willing to except it.....
i see how it can be hard to get all the supplies u need for certain things..
but magic is not just about that..its about your intent..perfect love & perfect trust...
u must have that, who cares what ppl think...
its either in you or not
Magick evolves. As old spells and rituals that manipulate the energies are lost over time, new spells and rituals replace them. More and more 'spellcasters' are self-taught through the teen-witch books that you can buy at any mainstream bookstore. Those spells are usually developed for that new book that was written within the last few years.
It is the Energy Manipulator's intent, focus of will, and strength of conviction that shape the energies to the spellcaster's desire.
Most people lack all three. Even those who claim to be practicing magick users.
aside from the concepts of energy manipulation..one thing that rarely gets mentioned in these threads is exageration
we read stories of great and powerful magics...
how much were these stories exagerated from their original source materials?
the story of king arthur is the perfect example....the myth
A king chosen by god and gifted with a magical sword and sheild, and a crew of knights of utterly heroic proportion and ability, a master magician advisor, and a castle of silver and gold.
the reality
A possible roman legate, who decided to stay behind upon rome's vacating of britain, armed with quality steel and good military tactics against a barbarian armyattacking defensible positions, with a druid advisor who knew much about herbal healing and natural happenings, and the help of other roman trained ex sodiers.
I think it is the same with stories of magic
many would have used some sleight of hand to make natural events seem extraordinary, or to make small lagics appear large or fantastic.....so were they actually doing great magics that we can no longer match?
or were they making small things seem large?
Daermon, what you say makes a lot of sense. We know that often during the course of time, stories seem to grow to 100 times what they were originally.
But there is a grain of truth (usually) amongst all the exaggerations.
I think that there is a lot of truth about the druidic society and the a lot of truth about the egyptians and the sumarians.
some of the things that they were able to accomplish, we still cannnot not duplicate.
and you woud think with all the technology and scholars and super brains that we have ilked out that someone would have figured some of their more puzzling feats out.
but we haven't. and probably never will.
that only tells me that there is a good possibility that their tales of magik, might have just a bit more truth in them.
as oppose to the legends of Merlin and his boy king.
Fortunatly not a problem at all, I have had a few good teachers, and I just ask the Daemons or deads any questions.. It was frustrating for the first coupe of years as I was only book learned, but fortunatly got past that :)
Night
I think some of the stroies were exagerations, while others actually happened but we cannot conceive of them in modern day society. Things were much different back then. Some things that we would see as a mircle today were quite natural back then and vice versa.
Btw, does a  go towards ones post count? LOL
Night
There is a PATHWAYS store here. Witches are always welcome. They cater to us, as a matter of fact
Magick is still there unchanged throughout time, the knowledge has been lost the power has not.
I feel that the magic is not lost as much as the old ways of magic is lost due to the fall of many ancient civilizations whom practced the "OLD WAYS" and had more power in my opinon, yet many do and can still practice their magic. It is also how you channel your energies into what you are doing and to control it.
Yet as to being LOST Yes I truly believe alot of the original magi has been lost. It however is coming back slowly as more and more sre looking and learning of the old ways as to say. just my opinon is all, and I do practice yet it is more on the energy levels then actual spells and such.
Yes...It has lost alot due to all the lore , but others like myself are always on the hunt to find and obtain anything on the older ways...It takes alot of time but if your willing...Alot can still be found.
I have to agree with NightMystress. There are, of course, exaggerations, but I don't believe all of it was. In every myth or story, there is some grain of truth. And there is alot that is hidden in metaphor in the old accounts. And wisely so....
yes most definitely on the lack of resources part. There just aren't enough shops around to get supplies.
General Society is still afraid of magic users. I do know of a few people that try magic. Herbal fixes usually work, I'm not sure about the other things they try.
i want to learn how to do this.... so if you could teach me please do.
Annakeeya, My sisters and I are also being training by our tribal elders. Though they often lament over the fact that a lot of our traditions have been lost due the expansion of the colonies as the United States took more and more of the Native Americans land killing all those that were in the way. There have been, many different tribes of north american natives that were completely removed from the face of our mother earth.
no i havent but then again i only mess with spells that are withen two elements.
prettyviolence
I can agree with you on your comment about the loss of our native american ancestors.
the healing and love arts are still very much used and well quite common.
i do not practice any magik but I have friends that do and they have told me that they have some trouble but not a lot to stop them from continuing or anything.
i practice magick, and i do have that problem. i seem ot find online resources the best, but there are occult shops out there. i'm proud to be a witch, and i practice my beliefs openly.
For me magic is a very beautiful art , and a nice world to me , i don't practic magic , but i'm very in magic , i thing everyone have the right to choose what they like...
All magic is eternal. You just have to risk harm to re-discover the methods to use it. A Lot of people lost their lives to discover certain types of magic. We just have to do it again
I love to use magick and I Love my abilities, and If I have too I will tell the whole world about magick so they can get use to the Idea of abilities I know alot of ppl who use to do it and were scared of ppls reaction, I on the other hand will tell anyone who says Im crazy for thinking this to screw off because I love magick and Im very comfortable with it to a certain extent that I will stick up for it!!!
I don't even pretend to have any magickal abilities, kudos to those that do.
There seems to be a lot of talk on here about the power sometimes being lost over time, maybe forgotten.
Doesn't magick evolve over time, after all it must have evolved to exist at all ... just because something changes, is that a bad thing?
I think some things were lost to protect them, others just forgotten. But, like it's been said, magick is so misunderstood... If you look around and many of the younger kids, younger teenagers, many of them are trying to perform magick without any bearing on what it really is. There are so many books out there (in the "new age" section--how does THAT work?!) that are really very UNhelpful. But it's rare to be advertised to "go here for help" for such things...
resources for certain things are extrmeley scarce. They aren't the kind of things you can just get at any time of the day anywhere. It's tricky...
I think that everyone has the potential, but it all depends on the strength of will and personal power.
i wish i was a magic user i really want to learn..........
"Doesn't magick evolve over time"
this makes me think of a concept I was discussing recently with oblyvia...
concerning the creatures of magic and lore, the fey, and other beings of so called myth....
did they vanish...or do our own mind disguise them to our eyes...do we see them every day and simply...not acknowledge them....
I do still think tho that many of the old legends of great magics were highly exaggerated
heres a question.. would YOu consider a elementalist to be a magic user....
In my opinion, knowledge was going to get lost as time goes by anyway, it's just the way things work, some things are forgotten or at least put to one side to make room for new rituals to be learnt, but the fact that the Wiccans and Pagans were nearly wiped out by the chistians isn't going to help with so many things burnt during those times........
Knowledge is the best thing we could have. To educate those that are frighten or unsure of Magick.
I believe there is a little magick in us all. Some are more drawn to it than others. I think also the way we are raised dictates to us. From what is possible and was is not. I think everyone should open their minds to other possibilities.
i think it all depends on where you live or who you know. i lived in a small town in Illinios and it was hard for me to find anything. i had to go up north and get into the Chicago area before i could find the things i was looking for. if your talking about books then no, because every Barnes and Noble has a huge section about all of that.
When I get asked my religion and I tell them I am a witch, they all look at me funny and kinda do the thing where they cross themselves as if warding off evil but that dont stop me from shrugging at them and going about my business. I dont care what they think one way or the other as long as they dont start preaching to me.
i am a druid if that counts, for anything and a master druid at that one
thanks meowmix....in 20+ years of occult study i have learned one main thing....too mnay occultists follow what they are told or what they read by rote....meaning they follow it without thinking about what it means....without actually trying it for themselves to make sure it is as they were told...I try to ask the questions that make people think about what they are actually yapping on....sometimes we find this way that what we were taught is not what we actually know to be true
Daermon, that's 2 very good points you've brought up. I agree we've all been trained to overlook things unusual from birth, so I've also thought of some of the older myths as being possible just not quite the way we now know of them.
I have found some magical ideals, spells or even items just didn't "taste" right to me and avoided them. Perhaps I made a mistake and overlooked something powerful but if it doesn't suit me I'm just not comfortable using it.
I think that most people have the potential for magic use but most perfer to be blinded to it's existance due to their upbring, religious training and other ideals.
Lore has been lost, but then again, much has been learnt!
The thing is, as a race, we have a terribe habit of looking back at "The Good Old Days"
Modern Day Practicioners would do well to learn from the past, but to develop their abilities into the modern world.
Learn as the elders learnt, by trying stuff instead of reading books!
Granted, there are risks, but nothing is worth anything without risk and effort.
I consider myself a modern day Druid. This does not mean I do not attempt to learn the wisdom of the past (Such as can be filtered from the Roman observers and Victorian Fantasies) I also examin the world with a modern eye, I don't need a stone observatory to know when the solstic is, I have it in my Outlook Diary! :-)
If you limit yourself to anchient learning, your doing just that.... limiting yourself!
I am sure that the history of Magik has been lost (or perhaps better phrased not preserved). There most have been many practices, rituals, spells, etc that were specific to different regions that have perished.
potion magic, alchemic magic, spiritual magic? what kind of magic, there are many types? or do you mean magic in general?
i have no problem at all with casting my spells. then again, i have unlimited resorces cuz i work at a wiccan shop. but no, i find it quite easy, if i dont have anything i need like certain powders i just bye them off the internet at luckymojo.com
Well my beleif you should be proud of the gifts your given. You should also know your suroundings and the people you can trust. Always be safe but dont let your talents and gifts go due to being affraid or worried what someone may say.
I would have to agree with KittyKattp18! I live in a kinda small town & resources are limitted! Sure you can find the books, that's always easy! The other stuff tho, it's hard!
My magic, for instance, is made easier to channel by music. It does not even depend on what genre that music is. Certain qualities in sound and sound generation pretty much determine the effectiveness of the magick I use.
So yes, there are difficulties, but there are also usually ways for people to overcome the difficulties they have for this sort of thing.
There is some that is lost, but there isn't only one way to glean information (books). It's just about searching, and trying other possiblities to find what you want.
faith can be a form of magic if you think about it... its all spiritual, mantal, and something more.
I agree with satin...I am VERY proud of what and WHO I am and I belive we will alwayz have magic but as you were say and I think I am answersing right....I alore of it is some what gone becaues of people and having to hide ..... :)
i agree there are many things lost from the past but i will continue to do as i can to gain more knowledge and hope that i can obtain insight with every approch i use
i just sometimes wish there was someone to guide me through what i'm doing, or help me practice at least. just difficult finding new exercises to do..hehe
Magic is mainly what you think inside, it is largely about what you are thinking of and feeling passionately. You do whatever 'feels right' and you don't necessarily need a book to tell you that. Books are good to know about different tools and suggestions of things to use, who to call to, when to do a spell and where to do it, etc.
But the most important things are your thinking, focus and belief.
The last spell I did, I..miiight have fallen asleep with two candles burning and woke up to find a wax icicle from the table to the floor and wax absolutely everywhere. It did however make the candles melt together which I believe to be a good thing ;)
very interesting cherry. Well some magik you can read about and study in books but I find allot of things come naturely. Some have more hidden talents then they are even aware of. Look deep inside of yourself and hey ya might surprise yourself.
In the olden days my ancestors would be killed on sight for using magic. But I don't think that we as a family have ever had limited resources, but I have also heard a number of complaints from other lines of witches.
As time goes by people learn to adapt to change. Back in older times people were superstitous.
Magik is very popular today and most people know someone who does it or do it themselves.
Of course there will always be the odd one or 2 people who don't agree with it but you get that with everything.
Very good insight Mistress I can totally see your point it makes sense.
i have no problem with using magik i have no problem with anything else either
to depressed life line:
alot of the times people do things alone but in your case i would guess it to be easier on your own. i always do that kind of stuff alone. when i do it with friends its normally for shits and giggles, just harmless fun. if you want to get serious with it do it alone and make your own exercises that benefits your sertain needs and no one elses because your mind and soal is different from every one elses so there fore different things are needed to make it tick.
I have been attempting to pactice magic for awhile and I do believe there is a lack of material for some like me to learn. I base what I know on what my friends have shown me.
It isn't the lack of resources, its the lack of strength in the ideal of Magic. This is do to the modern world and the aspect to control all things that can be controlled through the physical means of science.
Things that can't be fully controlled through a proven means cannoted be tolerated and is riddiculed. In this, its caused an issues with the basic flow and touch of everyone to the beginning aspects of what this world was created upon, magic.
- Sin
Everlust- I have had that problem myself. I have found things online to help me.
http://www.abaxion.com/
Most of my "tools" I find in nature. As far as the rest of it goes, I improvise. Candles from the dollar store work just as well as from any where else. The problem I run into more often than not is finding a secluded place to actually perform ritual. I live with my grandfather who is devout Catholic and I have a feeling he'd be rather upset if I start singing praises to the Lord and Lady in his home. So as a matter of respect I try to find a place in nature away from people to practice. Easier said then done on the Jersey shore. But I believe you will find everything you need if you truly want it. The Gods provide all, all you need to do is ask.
So much knowledge has been lost over the ages. Look at the Egyptians, the Romans, the Mayans...all these civilizations wiped out and much of their creativity and spirituality was lost. Who knows what might have been possible to a lost people? It was rumored that when Atlantis sank that many people escaped in airplanes. There are many mysteries this world still holds and one day we will know them all. I have no doubt great magiks did exist, but I doubt we will come to the knowledge of them on our own.
We all have things we have to hide. I have abilities that I have to keep secret. Without going into too much detail, lets just say that Magick runs in the family...
Being who and or what I am and my hertiage...I have studied wiccan for two years...My friend with 15yrs+experience has been helping and now I have started to help in the journey of two new witches to our family with the help of a book I thought lost or burned over 300 years ago thanks to those who helped bring my families baby back to me!~Bless~~~Butterfly~~~
i have friends that are witchs and it is hard to fine all that is need for some spells
yeah i can see that.
especially since so many things were passed down by mouth it's hard to find some actual texts to go on that aren't just texts and are ACTUAL texts. i've found it difficult to study druidism and the path of the bard for those very reasons.
magik is a form of energy. its allways there but the knowladge of how to weild it a perticulal way or use it for sertine things have been lost. i for one feel this lose as well as the lose of thous who can use it and are of it.
