How many of us here have spirit guides or totem animals? If you do, and would like to tell us what they are please share, though talking about your personal ones is not required.
I have to spirit guides, and one totem animal. My spirit guides are a black panther and a brown bear, my totem animal is a crow. :)
I used to , Until I passed Him, now he is just a good friend
Magnarock, Red Dragon, Guide
I would like to add to your post if it is ok..to see HOW you came to have spirit guides and totem animals. What process did you go through or did you just know one day?
I do not have either and have been curious about them.
Mine came to me, But Of course not all do , Mine came to me in a moment of distress and stuck by me , others may have to be found
i really don't have either, but i guess its a related subject to talk about my Egyptian cat. i found it one day on the ground all dirty when i was walking home one day. its a black cat that is posted straight up and only about 2 inches tall, but i've carried him around with me all the time for the last 8 years or so. it was only about 5 years ago i realized that he was a miniature statue of an Egyptian cat like they would have outside of a Pharaoh's palace for protection. i do think of him as a guide and protector...
Mine is the Dragon. Has been with me for as long as I could remember--even before I know that was the word to define what I saw in my mind.
I actually met mine through a meditation ritual that is actually designed to help you find your spirit guides. If anyone is interested in gettting the meditation, message me and I'll send it along. :)
Just as an aside, I have done some extensive rading and one of the things I have come across is the nature and the power of the totem pole.
Some people think that the figure ontop of the totem is the more powerful, but for the most part, from what I have researched, the figure at the very bottom of the totem pole is the one that has the most power. It holds all the rest up.
Well being Native I have spirit animals that have been told to me. I have a mother spirit animal of a butterfly and a father spirit animal of a moose. It is amazing when you see how the characteristics fit you. I know that in the past I have had butterfly's land on me and hang out. One time I had a butterfly fly into my home and stay for days when I was going threw a hard time.
Through some shamanic journeying meditations I frequently ran across coyote as a guide, considering his place in the native structure of things i'm still trying to decide if this is a good thing or not...
being taught by the trickster can be...odd
I do have some native american in me, but I don't know much about it! As a child growing up & continuing now, I feel that there are spirits around me to guide me! They aren't really in the form of an animal or anything though. Its just kinda like I know they are there. I feel them & as the years have passed it grew to more than one! I have seen a family member in a very stressful, upsetting moment! I saw my grandfather & I like to think that he may be one of the newer ones that I feel sometimes!
I have many Spirit Guides, I have those that have passed over and one of my Guides name is patty, she has been with me since I was five years of age. They have come to me in dreams and meditations.
a wolf... at the most distressing times in my life there has always been a wolf there, I feel as my "guide" to show me that I have made it through the latest problem and ready to move forward on the other side
I have a few guides.. mostly family that has passed on.. or people from past lives.
the animals guides I have have come to me in may different ways...
I have some that are basically there to protect me if needed.. they were actually a gift. My Shaman teacher asked them when I was young if they were willing to protect me and they agreed. And they still do But they come only when Iam in dire need.. so seeing them is not a good thing.
I have one of those that started out in the protection set.. that became a friend and she is around all the time.. she is my wolf. she helps me mostly learn to keep my mouth shut when I am mad.
I recentally seem to have attracted a fairy style of dragon.. when I ask her what she is.. i get a well duh look and a snort of Dragon.. I do not know much about her as yet.. the first dragon of any kind I have met.
I have a timber wolf as my totem animal...her name is Angel. She found me...and it's kinda weird, but one morning I came downstairs, walked into the kitchen and found wet paw prints on the floor, even though at the time I had no pets. I also have several spirit guides...5 that I know of...and they all came to me
My spirit guide is a wolf. Hes my close friend & the one thing in my life that i listen to the most. As far as a totem animal goes ive yet to find out what it is.
Many concepts of Witches having cats and them being their guide and familiars..Although I do have cats.. I believe my spirit animal is a Koala..As silly as that may sound to some..I feel a Koala so much represents me and so closely connected to them
I believe my cats are the ones that help me, because they do live w/me..They watch over me.
my spirit guide are wolve and owl as well as lynx my totem is a crow as well.... I am also native background.... thanx for bringing this post up
ive always seen a wolf about the time things are gonna go wrong ive always called him trouble..... its like he shows hims sell to tell me troubles on its way........
I dont know much about them, but I was told by a good friend that mine were a goose and a black wolverine.
I did research the wolverine, and I AM a lot like that, so I suppose it is true....
I have a question? How do you know you have totems, or spirit guides? I feel closely drawn to horses and dogs. Not sure what that means, if anything. Maybe someone could help me out here.
I think everyone has spirit guides. They just haven't found them. There are a couple of different ways to find out what your spirit animal is.
I think everyone has spirit guides as well. My understand about totems is that they are usually associated with a family or a group of people.
My personal guide is a merlin hawk. I met him through a simple guided meditation exercise, designed to contact ones animal guide. Now, anytime I go on a vision quest he is there.
the totem figures on poles are merely human tribal members wearing masks. The essence of animal characteristics can breathe to life traits not in us, but even though I have a love of animals, animals beyond a purity do nothing for me.
I learn much from humans. From what they don't say. There have been some zombies that have left a trail of bread crumbs to get me out of this enchanted forest.
Humans wear masks anyways, and some of us seem like animals too, but I feel an animal grounds you although most of you are talking about having metaphysical pets, I need a dog this winter, to get me out and about to bring me health on walks.
I guess all animals are earth signs, they ground us with their purity.
I've been told one of my Spirit guides is the Mountain Lion. I have alway felt an affinity to all things feline.
we all have spirit guides and totems..some just call them by different names..the family member that translated, the feeling towards a specific animal...you just have to find yours
ive never really looked into the prospect of me having a totem animal.
I am not sure if I have a totem animal or not, but, I know I have a spirit guide..since I was a a young teen and had a horrible experience, i have had this male of Native American descent coming to me in my dreams. He has helped me make some tough decisions. He has also helped me through some bad situations..I tried to tell my parents about him, and almost got put in hospital. They thought I was nuts..so I never talk bout it..
Apparently I am a topic stopper..everytime I post in one of the forums, it seems no one else does..so I will the forums to those with better and more interesting things to say..srry for wasting your time..
well despite the fact that i dont know what my totem animal is i know for one thing that ever since i was a child ive had one specific guide and his name is Jester but i call him Jest for short, hes what you could say a young native american child always dressed up in jester outfits that changed in color and style everyday. he never really talks to me but when he does he whispers to me in my dreams when i sleep. hes always been there for me and when im done hes always there to try to cheer me up.
Princess don't limit yourself on account of us. What admitted must have been very difficult, and maybe you are a hard act to follow because you make good points.
Thank you Vampariah..I think the things you say are not only thought inspiring but at times amusing as hell..thank you for the vote of confidence..muah
MPA dont leave..your experiences are necessary for others to hear and thought provoking..you're doin great hon, keep it up
My Totem is a wolf, and I have 2 spirit guides called Eva and Mary
i'm not sure of my animal/spirit guide. I seem to attrack all kinds of animals when i am out in the woods but i have an affinity for owls and wolves...
I would love to learn a ritual however to find out my totem animal..And thank you to those who made me feel better bout voicing myself on here..
My guide is a Wolf, I relate alot to wolves because of their ability to learn from experience and seemingly unnatural patience in things.
lol gothicjoker, always showing off, not that i am complaining* wicked grin*
but as for my totem i would have to say both the wolf and the tiger. they guide me everyday .
much blood and lust
I have tried to find out what my spirit guides and totems..to no avail. Apparently trying to hard.
The animal I closely associate with is the wolf. Due to the structure of the pack and the protectiveness they show in them.
My dog an Aussie/Collie is my beloved friend. She is always there for me through everything. She is mostly white with some color of the Aussie on her hind quarters, with blue eyes.
She is half blind and deaf. But if you just walk up to her you wouldn't know because she just acts like a normal dog.
When it comes to me she is very loving & fiercely protective over me. But knows when I need for her to stand down.
I love this post it's something I can relate to....... My spirit guide is THE WOLF not a wolf named billy bob or something just the wolf in general.... I have learned a lot about myself through studing wolves of all breeds.. I relate to them and use there wisdom when attacking problems in my own life. Because of the wolf being my guide I have owned 3 of them.. My first was always there to comfort me in hard times growing up. The second was only with me for a short time due to peoples lack of brains. But she is much happier on the farm I gave her to.But even in the short time she was with us her protection was always there(she pulled my toddler out of the street by his diaper) and her understanding no matter what the problem. My current wolf is the one I have pics of his name is bear, and though only a pup he comforts me in times of need. When I look into his eyes I see a part of me, but also everlasting loyalty, and love.... I don't remember how I came to learn that the wolf was my spirit guide I just knew... now as far as metaphysical I have once seen a wolf where there couldn't be one watching over me in a time of great fear.. and when I saw him I was instantly at peace and knew I would be ok. Now in hard times I just recall what I saw and still just at the memory of him I become calm......
My totem animal is a sivery owl that I use in shamanic meditations.
Well my spirit guides are people and animals, dogs are my animal spirit guide as well as a man from years ago who killed himself. My Totem animal would be a Dog if I had a Totem animal.
I do not know whether or not it is only a fancy, but I regularily see two animals... and i talk to the northern lights... Perhaps that is a different topic all together.
The one that warns me that I need to make changes in my life is this huge assed crow... easily twice as big as any of the others... and always alone...although i have heard that if you look you will always see that crows travel in twos.
The other is frog. And he is more consistant... reminding me to let go of things every once in a while ... you cannot swallow the whole world. I have a frog with wings tattoo... I tell people it is because a frog with wings does not bump his ass as he hops. In reality it is because in my dreams... when I am troubled... i know that my troubles are over (that I have overcome my tribulations) when I escape my troubles in my dreams by hoping across the ground and the swimming through the air like a frog.
I would like to know more about totem animals... but I am satisfied with my current mythos.
I know nothing of mine, but I do believe that just about every person has one because without a guide, you would have a lost soul.
coyote and the crow, they are mine, have been since i was a little girl, my grandfather being stockbridge indian told me that they would protect me for my whole life, and watch over my children, and my children's children. man i miss my grandfather he was a very wise man
Mine are the eagle and the wolf. Which I have seen in times of trouble, visions, and meditation. Being Native we are taught that they are guides and that help us get though hard times as well as teach life lessons.
Being Native we believe the we posses the characteristics of our totem animals/spirit guides. It is very common to feel a closeness to them as well as the ability to draw them to you.
i have two spirit guide but i dont like to talk about them for i feel it disrepects them but they have been there for me when i needed a freind and saved my life on more then one occasion
OK I have a bunch...for different reasons:
Wolf- I was one in a past life, and once I asked a Cherokee Princess to take a look at this huge crystal I had...she confirmed that wolf was a guide, and the other next one, and another I can't remember (but that's ok)
Hawk- Every time I drive, and get all introspective, I look up and BAM!- there's one in the sky...I seem to pick up on them as we're even speeding by. It makes me smile and think of freedon, and to respect and admire nature as I pass it. The Princess saw that animal too.
Ravens- They are on the front of my car (sticker, 3 of them, Celtic) as a guide/protector, against harm and death (makes sense, warding off accidents and all). Being wards of the underworld, AI love them.
Fox- Once had a personal experience...I was in a prking lot, testing out a car, and I was going thru a rough period in life- opened the door, and there was a red fox sitting a few feet away from me, just watching and hanging out.
Coyote- When I moved to AZ, this was a huge change, and so much was going on. Monsoon season was active, and one night I went out on a resort golfcourse, sat with a drink, a chair, and watched the storms, and when I looked over, there were 2 sitting less than 10 feet from me. They sat there the whole time, walked around with me, came close to touching them, and would then visit me everynight for a week.
Manx, or big cats- I am a Leo, right down to the anima core, alot of what I do can be called feline, and many people say I'm like a cat. For me, I have as much feline as wolf in me...odd huh? Whats bad is I'm now allergic to housecats...boo! I also have Bastet as a patron diety, and her cat always ends up in my life.
Butterfly and Dragonfly- Dragonfly is also an aide to the afterlife, and souls...wisdom too. I have often had them alight in front of me, butterfly as well, and have even often found them on the ground when they've died. Butterflies also hang with me. I've just always had a thing for them both. My dad once knew nothing of my affinity and gave me a tribal, totem talisman of one.
Sorry- big post, but I wanted to be detailed and concise.
I can't really answer based on the Totem animals I don't know much or anything that could possibly relate...but again there is one person I know that has knowledge of this.
Contacting Your Spirit Guide
by Sylvia Browne
Contacting Your Spirit Guide is divided into two parts. In the first sections, Sylvia Browne helps you find your spirit guides – the entities who are designated by you and God to assist you with life and give you guidance. You will not only learn how to tune in to this guide or guides, but you’ll also see how you can recognize who they are, the messages they can give you, and even discern what their names are so you’ll know how to refer to them.
In the second part of the book, (“A Day in the Life of a Spirit Guide”), Sylvia writes intimately about her spirit guides, Francine and Raheim.
Francine then tells her own story through Sylvia about what a “day” is like for her, and the book even includes actual transcripts from a research trance.
Sylvia’s love and respect for Francine and Raheim is evident throughout the stories that are presented. It becomes clear that through good times and bad, spirit guides look out for those under their care. Sylvia offers great insight into the workings of spirit guides, and in so doing, gives your the tools to understand your “unseen companions along the way.”
I am unaware of what my totem animal is. I just returned from a trip to Ruiodoso, New Mexico and became aware of the totem and would love to find what mine is. As for spirit guides, I am aware of Spirits aound me but for the most part I do not entertain them so am unaware of whom they could be.
I have 2 spirit guides one for my mind witch is a silver hawk and one for my body that is a big black bear
I have three cats, the oldest seems to be more in tune with my spiritual nature and needs. The middle one is truly my baby and helps me deal with life. As of totems I am seeking which animal is my totem. This may come later. For now my familiars are very helpful.
I have a spirit animal and it's a snake...... not sure why but that is what has come to me and I am fine with that.
i found my totem (a giant octopus/kraken) through meditation. my spirit guides i sought out and befriended during many spirit quests. they range from a few insects to some fey to a couple of dragons. each ofcourse had to be approached in differant ways, just as they all help in many differant ways
i believe that i am truly a lost soul. no guides no totems. nothing. i am scared of myself. i feel i have great ability to cause pain. but i DONT want to.
If I had a totem or spirit animal it would be a wolf or a tiger....
I don't have much knowledge of the totem, but will further investigate that for my own knowledge.
As for a spirit guide...I would have to say I have a strong connection with the tiger.
I have Native American blood in me and though I am not religious in any sense of the word, I feel deeply in tune with Shamanism. I grew up with animal guides and totem animals. I was taught when I was very young by the Medicine Man in our tribe that I was "touched". I knew things that I couldn't possibly have known. It's said that I have my knowledge from past lives. I've done meditative exercises but nothing comes to me, which is odd. But then we will be in the middle of a ceremony and they will be chanting and before they even begin with the drums, I'm chanting also and I can't even speak the language! I just understand it without putting it into words. My spirit guide is a wolf and my totem animals are a raven and a snake. I've always felt in tune with animals and plants.
I think the best spirit guides are the ones you don't intend to meet. And then when you do, you get off on a rocky start and eventually you build up a strong and lasting friendship. It's how I am with mine. When we met, we were paired up by the Elders and were forced to deal with each other. I can say we hated each other in the beginning and we fought about everything. The thing with my spirit animal is that she is the soul of a past living creature. She died when we were still in our fighting days, but we'd known each other for years before that. There was a pack that lived by the tribe grounds and they would visit us. She was born the same day I was and our Medicine Man saw a connection. We grew up together. When she died, though we still didn't get along very well, we had been making progress. When she died, I realized what a loss it was and it horrified me, a life without her was one I couldn't live through. Then she came to me in spirit form and we've been inseperatable since. In that form, we were able to look past our differences and have become great friends.
i search out my spirit guides. but when i do i'm searching for an entity that can help with the problem at hand. they do not always come nicely. they will most often, all be it grudgingly, help with what you ask then disapear. the ones you can become friends with through working together many times are also not always the best to help with what you need. simply because they will try to help with something they themselves know nothing about.
hmm. You make it sound like you use them. Actually, that's exactly what you're doing and that is not their purpose. It may be bad for you if you continue like that. If you only expect them to help you, yet you drop them as soon as they are done, there may come a day when you despertely need them and they will simply turn a blind eye.
sorry i made it sound that way. no, do not just use them. there is always an agrement and exchange. and usually it is i that gets dropped until they come to fully trust me

Ah, I see, sorry 'bout the mix up. I just get defensive about these things. Animal Guides cannot simply be 'used'.
I would hope that if I had a totem animal that it would be the bear as for the spirit guide I have always noticed that there is either a eagle flying over head or a crow.... but I'm not sure if either one is my spirit guide or not....
I have both Cherokee and Navaho in me and as such have two animal guides. The wolf and the eagle are my two animal guides. I am not sure what my totem pole animals are.
My totem animal has always been the wolf. I love wolves and have sponsored one from a New Mexico sanctuary.
As for spirit guides, I don't know that I have one of those. I have however for obvious reasons, started to form an alliance with the bat.
my totem is a owl and my guide is wolf
seeing im part lycan and such i draw more towrds the wolves when full moon i get a lil craving for blood..
I had an old Indian down in Oklahoma tell me my spirit guid and Totem was the wolf
My totem animal is a bat,and a guide has always been a wolf,it seems i have an affinity with both, the bat especially,i have had them come to me from across a street to rest close by on several occasions
ahh.. the totems.. i think i have a number of opposites that accompany me.. the crow, the rattlesnake, and the harris hawk all accompany me everywhere I go it seems like.. one is a scavenger (like me), and the other two are hunters (like me).. i'd rather not think about what that says about me..
D
my spirit guide has been very helpfull to me in times of need not just when there might be something harmful around but when I need to draw from it fore pice of mind. I'm not sure if I have a totem animal or not.
I think everyone has a spirit guide of some sort.
I will freely admit I do not always listen when mine speaks. Though it has way of getting it's point across.
How would I find out what my totem animal is and can someone define the difference between a totem animal and a spirit guide. Although I already know what my spirit guides are.
I only have one and its a spirit guide Well its a badger and i see it in all my visions
it all depends on the individual you are...
i believe our spirt guides are with us from the time we are born to our death... how i aquired them is way to long of a story... my totem is a white medium sized butterfly... always near always around somewhere never far away from me... wicked kisses and blessed be, darla...
I'm drawn to the snow egret. while I don't claim any totem or spirit guide, I've learned a lot from this simple but elegant bird who winters here and is a symbol for my life.
i have 4 guides that stand by me... they're with me all the time but they all become very strongly present in certaiun situations
i have my dragon, he came to me after I made a drawing of him... i didn't know where i got the precise image from, but it was in my head and I had an urge to start drawing it untill it was perfect...finished it came to life right before my eyes...
i have a cheetah.... don't know why but he has been with me from teh first time I went to my godmother In America...the neighbours had one and she was my friend so i guess her essence kinda stayed with me when I left...
i have a salmon... an indian tribe i spend two weeks me gave me this for i had proven I was a real member, proven teh abilities that a salmon posesses i gt it in a real indian ritual so... he comes to me most when I'm in nature... i always love to be in the pure calm nature cause there i can be free and think about everything so he's always outside i never see him indoors...
and i had a very little fairy really very little, she was with me from as long as i can remember but i could totally control her and ask her to come whenever I wanted... i gave her away to a vrey good friend of mine who really needed someone( a guide) that would look after her... if i see my friend the fairy's still with her, she comes to mee too when i'mwith my friedn but she realises why i gave her away and she realises my friend needs her more then I do...
so quite complicated but they all come along fine... and i just absolutly love each and every one of them and really thank them for helping me ad standing by me... i also thank them for choosing to come to me cause guides are something very special and you really kind of got to earn them by prooving yourself i think...
but no matter what happens when you're in trouble weither its physical or psychological they're always there when you need them...
hope it helped you
greetings
I think that this thread covers two different concepts, in that my totem animal is the Black Bear, but my 'spirit guide', as it were, is something entirely different and not connected with my totem.
My totem...the feline....always there in some form or fashion...wild or domestic to help guide, nurture and protect in whatever the case might be
STABB666, totem animals and spirit guides represent two different forces.
Yes, this is what I said.
STABB
totem wolf
guide is cat.
I was going through bad time and kept having these dreams with both animals in them.
A totem is any natural or supernatural being or animal which watches over or assists a group of people, such as a family, clan or tribe (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary and Webster's New World College Dictionary, Fourth Edition).
Totems support larger groups than the individual person. In kinship and descent, if the apical ancestor of a clan is nonhuman, it is called a totem. Normally this belief is accompanied by a totemic myth.
Although the term is of Ojibwa origin, totemistic beliefs are not limited to Native American Indians. Similar totemism-like beliefs have been historically found throughout much of the world, including Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Africa, Australia and the Arctic polar region. The bald eagle could be considered the totem of the people of the United States, though it carries no spiritual mythology amongst those people.
In modern times, some individuals, not otherwise involved in the practice of a tribal religion, have chosen to adopt a personal spirit animal helper which has some kind of special meaning to them and incorrectly call this a totem. (As noted above, a totem is applicable to a group larger than one.) This practice is prevalent in, but not limited to, the New Age movement. Beliefs regarding these animal helpers can vary, from merely adopting one as a whim, to adopting an animal that a person sees representing favorable traits reflected in their own behavior or appearance, called a power animal by the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. A few believe their animal helper acts as a literal spirit guide. Some Native Americans and other followers of tribal religions take a dim view of New Agers' and others' adoption of totem animals, arguing that a non-adherent cannot truly understand totemism apart from the cultural context, and that at worst, it represents a commercialization of their religious beliefs.
Mine is interesting.....my totem (which I have a tattoo of) is the dragon. My guide is a cat who has been with me since birth....that 29 human years!!!!!!!
KerwinBane, are you saying that it's more commonly found that totem animals represent a larger group as a whole, such as a tribe, and not neccessarily an individual person? But if that person does not belong to a group, they can still have a totem animal? I read in a book a few years ago (Witchchild, by Celia Rees), a Native American tribe was cut up into sections and that in each one, there was one particular animal to represent them. I've never heard of a power animal, but if the above is the case, then more people than not probably have this.
that would be good assesment godevil. i have read about some tribes around the world who have a tribal totem as well as clan totems for the differant family groups that made up the tribe, and yes i have read of a few tribes the have individual totems. this individual totem is wrongly by most commenly reffered to in modern paganism as a totem when it is infact a power animal. i myself in studying many differant cultures have found that many use the same termanology but can sometimes be switched. i have adopted for myself the custom of some north asian tribes use of a spirit animal (totem) which is a 'totem' and 'power animal' in one. when i speack of my totem i am speaking of an animal spirit that reprosents my in every way.
Right, so that is what I probably have. I learned everything I knew from the Village Elders, but they didn't explain that there were any specific differences, they were only going by their traditions. Thank you for helping me understand this better.

I had mine read to me.... Im not sure if everyone does this in that way, but that is how it was done to me in a pagan community.. My number one was a tiger, but I had seven.
I have never really looked into it. So if i do have one i am not sure. But it would be something interesting to look into.
We all have them its just that most are not aware or awake enough to see/know them
I think my totem is a water spirit.. seems wierd but its true and my guide well
It have to be cat !
well if a element can be you'r totem I would say mine is fire
I have two spirit guides 1 female and the other is a tiger.
