A curse by definition of Webster is
Main Entry: 1curse
Pronunciation: 'k&rs
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English curs, from Old English
1 : a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one : IMPRECATION
2 : something that is cursed or accursed
3 : evil or misfortune that comes as if in response to imprecation or as retribution
4 : a cause of great harm or misfortune : TORMENT
(heres that link http://www.webster.com/dictionary/curse)
They do work if done properly, but that verse is true. If someone is undeserved of something it wont work. Most people think that they can curse anyone in which they please, and it will work... Total misconception. The verse is the same as the 3 fold law, just worded different.
I personally think it is easier and much safer to just let karma have its way. lol.
I do believe in the validity of curses. There are too many instances of them coming true to be just coincidence. Before the war, Armistead uttered a curse upon himself if he raised his hand against Hancock, his best friend. July 3, 1863 saw him doing just that during Pickett's Charge and he was mortally wounded and died a few days later. I don't feel one could dismiss this as coincidence.
I know one guy who , when he was lying , would say something knowing it was a lie and follow it up with " I swear on my kids' lives".
His son died in a drowning accident in S.E.Asia.Now he has his daughter left.
Bad luck or cursed ?

If you believe in curses, would you not bring it into action, just by the negative thought, energy you give out? :)
belief in anything if strong enough could cause action..I think look at all the things done in the name of some ones beliefs. I think that if you put enough energy behind a curse if you truly think its deserved then it will come to lite some how. that also means then you should not half mean it or just do it in heat of moment cause it will come back on you then and probly be worse then the original energy you put out.
I'm with vampirewitch39 on this one, if you believe you are cursed enough you'll cause it's effects at least in your own view by the energy of your belief in it.
if you believe in something strong enough, it can happen. be it a curse or a spell.
A curse is all in the mind, it is only valid if One believes in it...
i think its how much you believe in them. the world is made up of energy and if you think and feel that you are cursed then you will draw bad energy twords you and make it seem that way..I would like to think that if you send out good you'll get it if you send out bad thats what you'll get...
I believe that a curse is only good if the person really believes they have been cursed. Like most things it is mind over matter
I think that you have to be a firm believer in a curse for it to actually work... The more you believe the more chance you have to curse someone.
CursedtoDarkness has it correct I think.
I think curses can and do work.....based on belief becuase belief/faith has power.
I also think the verse is the 3 fold law....worded different.
Curses only work on those who deserve it...but then they must already have a dark aura anyway. But I also try to let "what goes around, come around".
a cruse is real, most would say that if you belive it its real. but im the fact of other wise, ive been cursed my whole life. and didnt even know about it. so yes its real, and there are ways to get free of it. if your strong enuff.
like with me, mines a family cusers that can not be taken off unless the one wronged is right...or i fined someone to love all of me, even thats darkend side of me.
They can and do work but as said only with faith and belief.
And as CDT and Elemtenal said karma is the best way to go what goes around comes around
I belive in curses and all kinds of different things andI belive what you send out comes back to you x10
I believe in curses. Shit I used to wonder if a ex put one on me lol. My friend ex g/f had a curse on him and it was horrible.
I've been sitting here for several minutes trying to decided if I believe in curses or not.. I just think horrible things happen and to reason them out people need to put the blame somewhere....... but just in case I'm wrong.... please don't curse me I have enough issues!!
I believe in them and I believe I've been cursed before now.
However the person that cursed me did it as a joke because they were messing with some occult things they had found on the internet.
Yet I still was the victim of it, was it my own belief that brought the curse into effect or do they simply work regardless of your actual intent?
I strongly believe that curses work, but yes, the 'victim' has to be deserving of the curse or (a) it won't work and (b) It'll come back on the person who issued the curse. However, the 2 curses I've done have had an interesting effect, and it hasn't come back on me as the people concerned did deserve it.
I believe that curses are real regardless if the person believes in them or not. I have intentionally cursed anyone or been on the receiving end of them. I do notice that if someone mistreats me that little bad things up to large things start to happen to them. It has happened recently where I was betrayed and then the job the person had lined up was taken away, ecetera. Having said this, I would never intentionally curse someone as I do not believe that anyone really deserves to be cursed.
I think that the only power a curse will carry is that of the power of suggestion. It will come to be should you believe it will. The body has become conditioned to do as the mind dictates. The curse works because the mind believes it and conditions the body accordingly.
I feel that it is also a belief either triggered by a physical event that could not otherwise be explained like the Egyptian curses which no we know they had biological causes. Also they could be the self fulfilling prophecies of an individual’s on thoughts and beliefs such as others have suggested. There’s also the possibility that two or more individuals could have a battle of will or energy if you with (magical battle if you must) and the negative result the, loser feels could be labeled as a curse.
Ah, Sacred.
That is a very valid point. My mother always said she was cursed and had a "black cloud" over her. In reality the majority of her issues revolved around her enabeling of my drug abusing sister. There was no "curse", it was just her lack of will to allow my sister to suffer the just consequenses of her behavior.
As to other curses, I do believe that they exist. Whether they only work if they are "justly deserved", or only work if the victim is aware and believes in them...I can't say. Both scenarios seem plausable.
I think curses can be real but if you classify it as just a series of ill luck, I been having one hell of a long series
I Have used Curses Before on co-workers.
One Was My Boss, Whithin A week Of Me Casting them My co-worker lost his job and apartment, and My boss busted his finger.
Now this may have been coincadince, but Until I have proff that it did'nt I will curse those who piss me off.
people think that if you htink about it hard enuff itll happen....but you can see the curse if you have the right eyes. my friend ash said she all ways saw a green like mist around me, mind you not my arua. but she asked what it was and i smiled and told her i was cursed and it was a family curse.
i didnt find out about it till i was 15 when i wen through my grandpas stuff and found a note heleft me tell me about it. and before then, id been haven bad luck non-stop. but hey we all believe what we do.
now N.X.H. you should not curse people for the three fold law, and i believe it. just becareful for what you do, magic is wild and untamed, and CAN NOT be tamed no matter WHAT.
I also believe what would said about believing in it is true. If you do not believe in curses than I think it would be hard to be cursed. lol that kinda remind me of that movie "The Skeleton key" they had to scare her into believing in curses & witchcraft before they could put a spell on her. I think that is very true.
I beleive in curses, I can even make them, I did several times, but the thing is you have to be willing to pay the price for it, cause a curse bounce back, it can do it in a bad but not to bad way or it can almsot cost you someones life or the healh, and this is no joke, when I curse someone I make sur the rebound is gonna hit me perosnaly not someone I love, as it use to happen, for exemple one time my bother broke his femour as a result to a curse I did on a person I hated and that had hurt me. So like the saying goes: be careful what you wish for, you might get it, well its true be careful cause it might cost you more then you were willing to pay for.
Perhaps it is like what they say about vodoo the more someone believes in the curse the more effect it has on them. As for the coming back on the person who uttered the curse if the person does not truly deserve it *shrugs* isn't there something about black magic that is the same, about it coming back tenfold reguardless if the person deserved it or not *shrugs* I know I've had my run of ill luck before and though it did feel like I was damned or cursed I think it was just bad luck, my moment of hell to realize what good is and appreciate the little things in life again...
I believe that curses, when done properly can and will work. I also believe that if you curse someone who is undeserving, and you swear on a child's life, as Sabre mentioned about someone he knew, you will jinx the child, and most likely yourself if you are untrue. A curse, like a spell, should be handled carefully. I personally wouldn't do a curse. Remember the rule about doing something bad, and it comes back to you threefold. thats enough deterrance for me!
What I know as far as curses go.. and I do believe this.. its all based on past lives, and what you put out into the world..
Curses can also be just that a string of bad luck.. however, in my case I don't know what to believe.. maybe it is a karma thing just in general.. All I know is I am getting sick, and tired of all the bad times.~NFA
Ancient Egyptian Curses...interesting
Well let's hit the basic.....Just as any thing projected through thought...thoughts manifest...those skilled in manifesting a thought can cause a "Curse" to come into fruition. ie: Evil thoughts projected.
But many "curses" themselves are products of chemical reactions in the system. The Egyptians were very much aware of what certain herbs and fungi collected could produce. And why not they were master healers. They were performing the most delicate of eye surgeries while most of mankind were still living in caves beating each other over the head clubs.
The sciences were a second nature to them and placing a "curse" in glyphs was a warning that the entrance to a particular tomb was "protected" by an air borne virus that had been introduced into the tomb upon sealing it, hence breathing in the air would cause the person to fall ill and eventually die. Some took longer than others due to their immune system and possible medications in the blood, but the eventual end was always around the corner.
Many people do believe in Curses....they did in the Egyptian era with opening a coffin and people would die.
Cursing someone can be thought of as merely wishing for bad luck for someone, or it can be thought of as trying to cause someone bad luck. Or worse.
Cursing has been around for a long time, and in my personal beliefs works wonderfully. However, I don't beilieve it's a matter of magic or universal justice... karma, I think it's more of a mental process... which would prove the proverb correct in a way. Because a guiltless man would have no reason to dwell upon the curse... knowing he was innocent he wouldn't worry about such things. While he who cast it would find it growing into obsession, and eventually harm himself somehow...
I always find curse words interesting. Swear words, also known as curse words... are meant to bring bad luck or such to those they are used against... I worry that in a world such as today, where almost everyone swears on a regular basis, what kind of reality are we creating for ourselves?
I agree with Zodat's observation that curse words, as they have become common place, are really meaningless, as far as cursing someone. I do believe and practice magic in my religious beliefs. Curses are not the normal practice of sincere and ethical Wiccans I know, but the dark side is available for use as is the magic to help and heal.
As I see it a curse can be given to anyone, in any form, in any way. The quote from Proverbs does work, but there are times that a curse will still work even if the person doesn't deserve it. It just depends on the person casting it and if they believe in the law of three.
i think curses are real, to some degree. I believe someone puts a curse on someone and that person believes it is real and as such the curse can become true....very much like voodoo etc, its wat people believe in that makes them real
Yeah, You most definetly have to believe in it. Can you put a curse on someone who does not believe?
A curse is anything negative directed at another person.
As for the placebo effect, not sure on that...
The proverb well my thoughts on that are if the person doesn't accept nor care, believe or understand the meaning behind the curse then it won't affect them. But the person laying the curse will have it rebound back to them and they will be the one to suffer. Basically karma will come back and bite them on the butt big time.
Ant thing you give enough thought and power to can happen... So yes Curses can be cast but most all the time it is the person or persons that self fulfill it not an curse at all...
Curses are like , "prayer", but in a nasty way....I believe everything comes full circle on EVERYONE...hence my previous statement, you reap what you sow.
good point I think that curses are a run off of the placebo affect. In that they only seem to work if you believe that they will
There are a couple of ways to look at curses....some believe that they do work and others dont...however is it possible? Sure. But I think that they only work on certain people
yes i would say it is quite simmilar to the placebo effect any thing if believed strong enough will affect the mind
personally, i do believe in curses. The use of curse has been practiced by many cultures. The most universal method of laying on a curse is by effigy, which is an image or representation of the victim, or the person who is wished to be harmed. Waxed effigies were common in ancient India, Persia, Egypt, Africa and Europe, and currently are still used. Also, effigies can be made of clay, wood and stuffed cloth (poppets). Often the effigy is marked or painted to looked like the victim. It is thought that the closer the effigy resembles the victim, the more the victim will suffer when the effigy is harmed or destroyed. The theory behind the harming or destroying an effigy to do harm to a victim is pure sympathetic magic. As the effigy is harmed, so the victim is harmed. Likewise, when the effigy is destroyed, so the victim dies.
I definitely think that curses do work but I agree with what many of you are saying that they only work if we give them the power to work in our minds. I also think that curses only work on those believing in them and are deserving. I personally dont think that I could go around cursing people even if I had the power because of that thought...are they deserving of it....will it come back on me....Karma works just as well in due time.
All I know is that when some one has wronged me and I wish them to pay for it bad things happen to them. Not sure if that is a curse or just karma. Maybe I have the "Evil eye". lol
I strongly believe in curses. But if you bring a bad curse falsely on anyone, it will get you full circle.
Of course they exist. And most times just the word spooks people enough where one doesn't have to do any magicks at all*grins*
Life is a curse.. lol Lets face it. Everyone has and will go through some turmoil in their lives. Some call it bad luck, some say it's a curse.
A curse in my beleif is a state of mind, the power of suggestion, mind over matter. Things that may follow after you think you've been cursed
is just a coincedence, bad luck. Tragic things happen everyday to anyone.. that is life! If you beleived you were cursed to be lonely for the rest of your
life, then it is quite possible that you will put all your faith in that to the point that you're ultimately creating your own lonliness. If you were cursed that a member
in your family would fall tragically ill, then I'm sure the coincedence would be scary but how long did it take to happen? Humans are bound to get ill sooner or later,
only a matter of time. I personally feel if you beleive in curses then you're beleiving in your own guilt. You think you deserve the curse that has been brought upon
you.. the only way you can break it is by simply forgetting about it. ;P
I have to admit that I truly believe that curses are worthlees unless the person cursed believes they are. It's more of a negative karma type thing rather than what you do. As far as luck i truly belive the only "luck" is the luck you create for yourself.
A curse is the effective action of some power, distinguished solely by the quality of adversity that it brings. A curse may also be said to result from a spell or prayer, imprecation or execration, or other imposition by magic or witchcraft, asking that a god, natural force, or spirit bring misfortune to someone
i believe that curses are valid and also believe that if its an undeserved curse that it will fall back on the curser and if not it SHOULD
I agree with the above. if a curse is malplaced, it will simply not work or backfire. i am under the impression that witchcraft or magick in general is all for the betterment of the universe, cursing someone that does not deserve it is not for that cause ind will thus backfire...lol or not work
Oh dear, curses. Well, I can tell you that if I curse, there is usually a valid reason for it... :)
Hm, well, I'm not one for the validity of any type of magic, so I'd have to say that this is purely psychological. It all depends on who is being "cursed" and how much stock they put into that. A personal story goes along with this... My grandmother is a spitfire, and currently having trouble with her words. So I like to take advantage of this, and got her all excited over this guy I was "engaged" to and then made the punchline. She got pissed off and gave me the "maloik" (I'm not sure how to spell that, but it's like the Italian equivalent of a Jihad) and she had the most UNLUCKY day in the world. Now, seeing as I was the one who was cursed, wouldn't one think that I would be unlucky?
i think its like what they say about voodoo... it only works on those who believe. once u believe, its on.
In my experience...the subject that the curse is put on...needs to believe in curses for the curse to work. But maybe now...just how it seems
So if one must believe in or fear curses in order for them to take effect, then why don't people just... wise up?
Because the mind is a powerful unknown tool. As long as someone believes they have been cursed then subconciously it will affect them. Just like taking a placebo. If the doctor tells you it's an antibiotic then your mind will convince you that you are getting better because of the medicine, even though your body is healing itself.
OOoh I love this thread, Ireland is so full of curses!
"May the snails devour his corpse And the rains do harm worse May the devil sweep the hairy creature soon!"
The curse of misfortune
Tania Ahsan - Monday, July 10, 2006
METRO London.
Your partner dumps you, you get mugged on the way to work, your boss fires you and you return home to find the bailiffs round. Cursed or just very, very unlucky?
The history of being cursed is a long and varied one from infamous Romany curses to the curse of King Tut; they all have the requisite amount of ominous coincidences. Is a curse just a superstition or is there more to it than that? One of the most prevalent beliefs about being cursed is that you should never refuse a gypsy or annoy a witch as they may put the heebies on you.
Fortune-telling.
Carly, 24, was visited at home by a woman claiming to be Romany and offering to read her fortune.
'I didn't want to have a reading as I'm nervous about being told something bad,' she says. 'But I did buy some lace from her because I remembered the saying about not refusing a gypsy. All the time she was saying: ?Don't be afraid of me, I won't hurt you,? but, of course, that made me even more anxious.'
This reputation for cursing has caused prejudice against Romany people but documented cases of a proven Romany curse are few and far between; perhaps the most famous is that of a curse placed on football team Manchester City's Maine Road ground back in the 1920s. It is said that a group of gypsies placed a curse on the ground when they were moved on from a site they considered to be their home. Anyone looking at the club's rocky fortunes over the years can find much anecdotal evidence for a curse being in place.
Modern witches also have an unfounded reputation for cursing. Many are vocal against their characterisation as compulsive cursers. Mavis Collingwood of Occult Art Company (www.occultartcompany.co.uk) says: 'I can't speak for everyone, as each individual witch has a different view on this. Most practising witches consider cursing unethical but there are some who will curse if they believe the other person deserves it.'
Witchcraft ethics.
The method used by witches to curse can be as simple as 'ill wishing,' or directing negative energy toward someone, or as complicated as making a doll (pictured). Collingwood says she has seen some interesting examples of effective curses involving poppets (dolls) filled with hair and nail parings, then stuck with pins. 'Rather gruesome,' she admits. 'But apparently they work.'
So what should you do if you sense you are the victim of an unjust curse? Collingwood advises: 'Chances are you're just clumsy or unlucky. People sometimes find it difficult to take responsibility for the outcomes of their actions so they blame their bad luck on a curse.'
Reversal spell.
'But if you really think you're cursed, the best thing to do is a 'reversal of misfortune spell'. Cast a circle of protection, wear a mirror or visualise a reflective ball of light around yourself, and meditate on reflecting any negativity back to where it came.
'Never perform a retaliatory curse or ill wish anyone because you just might be wrong. Protection should be general rather than directed against an individual.'
White witch and author Titania Hardie also has a general protection against cursing. She recommends you carry a willow or rowan tree twig in your pocket as a protection from just about anything. 'If you can't get this, a hazelnut in a pocket will do the same job.'
My grandmother always said to put willow in our pockets, now I can understand better were this comes from, thanks Sabre :)
Curses are real … if you know what your doing how could it comeback on you? yes it is the power of the minds intent or will. No a weak mind stands no chance, even a placebo can make you sick if you believe. I recommend to all get a witches bottle made, believe me it works.
Perhaps I should carry a bouncy ball in my pocket at work. Then maybe I won't break anything!
Sorry, I really couldn't resist. Superstitions are just that: superstitions.
i guess negitive power like energy might provoke a curse of some sort on yourself or being to self paranoid
fortunate fool, i think people dont wise up because they get wrapped up in it. there is a really good movie called Skeleton Key that is really good and is a good example. Once u see it, u start to believe it and all it takes is jus one inkling of belief.
Oh and especially if u see other people who really believe and you see the effects. its like a string of events.
It would be interesting to go back into the history of curses.. hmm, I wonder what was the first recorded one?
Curses do exist.but if someone chooses to put one on someone.what they unleash will come back at them.similar to life itself.you reap what you sow.
sacrad that could easily be true. but because you believed it would happen it makes it true. thus it would end up not being you believing in it but in truth reality
I don't know, curses are tricky. I think it's all really just a huge mind game. Which doesn't answer any of the questions... Basically, people will believe what they choose to believe.
The Curse of the Mummy..weren't the Epygtians one of the major races for making curses?
Just like white magic, earth magic and sex magic, curses do exist. Placing curses, however, creates a LOT of bad karma, and will adversely affect the castor's future in this life AND the next.
Well, the Egyptians did have their curses, yes. Mummification was believed to release the soul from the body so that it may be reincarnated, the whole nitty gritty process was for purification (if you were good, that is). However if you were a bad person, they did do very mean things... such as scramble your brains while still alive... ew.... I think that they had the same process for both good and bad, but the way it was performed made the difference. Maybe.
I have an evil mind, I hope I never learn to cast curses even though it is very tempting...
my family believes in curses, I have come to believe in them too. I was told witchcraft is part of my family's history, my mother wouldn't even let me get a ouija board. That's one thing she doesn't play with and she has even asked me not to play with it.
I believe also that it's all about power u put into it. It could happen. There have to many times where things have happened where people suspect that it was because of a curse.
Curses do work on the deserving. One should always be careful when dabbling with curses. Let's not forget the law of three fold.
well if you really want to delve into the bible in the new testament(also defined as covenant or promise) Jesus's work involved the spoken word or the laying on of hands. The woman with the issue of blood was not cured until she touched his garments. Jesus and his apostles spoke and rebuked demons. I once read where this was called "a point of faith". Faith is intangible, therefore we as mortals must have something mundane in order to invoke our true faith. Anyway, I've had personal experiences with curses, yes I believe in them and no I will never preform one again. The payback is far too great.
a "return to sender" spell could be considered a curse by the person that recieves the effect of the spell
I do believe in curses. However, I also do believe in the so called "placebo curse." I guess if you don't know a curse is put on you and things begin to happen and then you find out you have had a curse put on you then yes it is a true curse. But like everything else, if you think something you make it true in u'r own mind and then it is what it is.
I think it is all a matter of what one believes. Personally I don't believe in curses. I believe that those who think they are cursed, merely haven't stepped back to look at the whole situation and realized that their misfortunes are not due to a curse, but something on their lifestyle or behaviour which is causing the symptoms of a curse. Due to their lack of knowledge they resort to supernatural explanaitions and henceforth myths and strange beliefs are manifested.
Although I would neve ignore a curse.I basically think they are a mind game.If one believes in it, then the person sending the curse has won.
I would put up a good shield and some basic energy against any ole curse*lol*
I have seen curses and hexes work. I'm not sure if all of them work but I know that some do.
i think cures can happen , i have used a few my self, but i think it depends on the curse you use, you cant justy say bugga bugga i curse you , noting will happen
I've been cursed un earnest by others more than just a couple of times.
I'm still here. Funny fact, at least one of those persons cursing me died a rather bizarre death. Must have believed in it to much....
No noticable effect with me, though!
i have a question..if u believe in luck or ill luck, how can u not believe in curses
i agree curese work its just a matter f what and how it is
i heard there are like at least over 6 diffrent kinds of curses
