afriend of mine seems to think that multiple personality disorders are caused by more than one soul being trapped in a single body, but i was unsure as to whether that can actually happen.
opinions?

Multiple souls in one body would be too impossible. It would be too cramped. I don't think multiple personalities have anything to do with multiple souls.

i guess its possible but i personally doubt it. just my opinion

I would tend to think of it more as there past lives coming through in a heavier flow than they can handel . Or perhaps they remember something we do not . Like the trasition between the 2 lives .

You have a vailid point with that one . The case of creating alter persona to block out memory . I had not even thought in that direction.

Multiple personality disorder happenes when a person is faced with such a trauma that they aren't able to .. handle it is the best way I can think of to say it. Their mind makes different personalities to handle different aspects of things.


I know someone who was severely beaten by her husband for many years. One of her personalities is full of rage, another who is a child, and another who is a calm adult and she has more.

I have to agree with Mrs. "something extra" there.

If it were multiple souls, I do not think that psychothearapy and drug thearapy would be able to ameliorate the symptoms as is evident is so many controlled studies.

Not to mention that the brain waves of people with multiple personality disorder change with each personality. Handwriting, speech, and tons of other things change with each individual personality.

Well, now that I think about it, maybe it could be something else coming through. There have been thousands of documented people with multiple personalities where a personality knows things that the original person never did, like foreign languages for instance.

well as i did say that i doubted it was possible i have to go with Lagniappe and what was posted. the medical definition or cause of it.

I highly doubt that the human body could hold more than one soul. I will have to agree with Lagniappe and what she had written down.

Very interesting thought but I agree I don't see how it would be possible for multiple souls to live in one body.

May not be another soul, but as said the trauma was so great that maybe a past life who was stronger or more dominant appeared and took control for survival.

There is so much of the human mind that is unmapped and that they do not know what it does that, even drs. do not know everything about the mind yet.

They just want you to think they do and they truly do not and noone does, because they say geniuses only use about 10% of their brains and if that is true what is the other 90% for? Noone knows for sure as of yet, but maybe in time we will.

cerebral you make a great point. They thorise that some of the most famos minds used up to 12% of there brain . So the possibilities are endless.

multiple souls in one body no but multiple souls controling it yes, I know a person who is at times controle by multiple souls and spirits and demons, and it can happen

it might not be possible to proove medicaly but is it true, I saw it first hand many times.

I believe there to be another 'soul' within me... just locked away... tho it gets out alittle bit every now and then

i have a first hand experiance with this thing, as it happens to me. i have maybe... 23 different personalities, i think. some of them are my past lives, and some are other spirits, or souls, that dwell within my body. it is not uncommon for the other personalities to take over my body and have conversations with people that i don't even know about. i recognize faces and places and words that i've never seen or been or heard before. i am not th eonly person this happens to. i know of five other people that i see on a daily bases that this happens to as well. some people thinkit isn't real, but i know better

i don't think there are multiple souls there are only one but for as multiple personalities there are u can call them mood swings or by polar

do you think it could be because the lives they lead currently not past i mean it is possible but not therotical & two because i have a friend who is like that & she never got abused once & all so a few others where i uesed to live

i mean what if it is things they have done to other people because there have been articles i have read that have said a person can have a split personality because he/she did not want to live in the life where she had done wrong so she had another personality that she used so he/she could get away from it

I totally agree. A lot of people have many different ways of dealing with stress. SOmetimes they read, work out, play video games, OR... invent someone else that doesnt have these problems and has ways of dealing with new ones. So they become that person from time to time subconsiously. Its actually been defined as a mental disorder.

it is possible. i do that sometimes, too. when things get too hard for me to deal with, i'll just "push someone in" to take control of my body, another part of me that can handle it, while i go sulk in my mind.

I doubt that it is multiple souls in one body. It is usually something wrong in the mind.

The closest thing i can think of to where you have 2 of any spiritual being in your body would be possesion, but i wouldnt consider that a 'soul'

i get possessed all the time, it just depends on the intent of the spirit

I think the battle for two souls control over one body would rip the mind apart and eventaully, when one soul won, the winner would still be battered in beaten

I think that multiple personality disorders are caused by chemical imbalances, not by more souls inhabiting one body, since the person afflicted with this disorder is the same person as always, just acting out of the different personality parameters, for exmpl, evil, or good.

My opinion, based on my own case and those of others I've met: many cases of multiple personalities seem to be caused when coping with a major trauma would require such radical changes in the current personality that it's easier for the mind to put the current one aside and start from scratch. Essentially, I agree with Lagniappe's post, but I'm adding in the bit about the radical changes, because the mind can adapt the personality to deal with most traumas, except for the really major ones such as sexual and physical abuse.

I do know of one case where it seems another soul takes over, but that's more of a short-term possession than a true multiple personality.

So I don't think it's multiple souls in most cases, just different facets--we turn the gem to show the side we wish to at the time because we developed that mechanism to protect us sometime in the past (often in childhood). And as adults, we've established that pattern for so long that we are hard-pressed to change it.

I believe it could be possible after all isn't possession in some cases when another soul inhabits someones body? In most cases though I would say it's a psychological problem.

Multiple personalities is something we all have to a degree. ONe for work, one for family another for friends ect. Its a coping device. Problem is some become separated from this to the extreme. Not knowing what the "other" is doing. Caused by tramatic stress.

I don't think it's multiple souls in one body. It's a malfunction in the person's brain, a chemical imbalance or misfiring neurons or whatever.

Multiple Personalities are created when someone has a tragic trauma in their life that they aren't able to cope with anymore. It has nothing to do with multiple souls.. Each person has their own soul and no one elses...

One soul to one body. As for possession---I do not think of them as souls....that would be a demon and demons have no souls. (That is why they ARE demons)

Lagniappe Makes good mention that I feel sums up what I have seen on this subject.A well phrased question.Leads me to question further the delusional mind that seeks to deceive becoming the altered persona.

Also questions come to mind with channeling and mediums not nessarily possession but temparary leasing a host.

A thought just occurred to me.....
Perhaps multiple personality disorder is actually uncontrolled channeling? Mediums are able to have a spirit use their body to communicate for a period of time. Maybe those people who suffer from the disorder are actually just strong mediums and their "personalities" are actually spirits temporarily taking advantage of their bodies?
Just an idea. Probably not the case, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway.

Can anyone say with absolute certainty that possession of a person by a ghost is impossible? I'm not trying to say it's probable or that it's common just that it's possible. If it is possible would they not most likely be diagnosed as mpd? Not that it would account for more than a minute percentage of mpd cases, but just be possible. And even if possession was done by a demon would that not still be a seperate personality?

I tend to agree with Serebro: there are many facets to the personality and soul. Why are there multiple facets of a soul? I would consider past lives a major contributing factor. A split personality still has only one soul.

Yes, trauma does have a bearing on multiple personalities. Trauma (and stress) can cause major changes in life: it's a survival mechanism, causing both personality changes (including multiple personalities) and repression. Some things are truly better forgotten!

Now, possession is a whole different thing: in possession, there is another soul involved because there is a whole different being/entity actually involved.

I truly wish we could provide scientific evidence, but all we can go with on this one is our own beliefs and thoughts. I'm glad to be able to read others' thoughts on this subject! This is a good thread!

people have speculated that multi personalities were a result of possessions. i am prone to buy this however i do not believe that all personalities are due to possessions. i feel that some people create these alter egos to form a sort of escape from the every day. so that they can get away from pain. just theroys here but that is what i think

well i think that everyone has atleast 2 personalities because i mean i know that i have two see sometimes i act like an adult but when my friends are talking about certin stuff my mind is like a 6 year old and i cant help it

I believe that multiple personalities are the perversion of a single distorted soul usually brought on by some sort of trauma earlier on in life. They are usually created to help cope with whatever has happened... the person can be aware of them or not, it depends on that person. I know what happened to me and I know how they came about. I just don't know how to get rid of them. They are a bit of a problem sometimes....

to be quite honest multiple souls in one body is possible. it is up to the individual to choose one and stay with it. Multiple personality disorder in my medical opinion has nothing to do with multiple souls. Multiple personality (medically speaking) is when one assumes to be someone else, this occurs through a chemical imbalance within the brain, or a horrible trauma that the person has gone through.

Multiple personalilties are the result of psychological trauma that the mind is unable to cope with. The body only has so much spiritual room...more than one soul would equal a lot more issues than just each personality coming through.

Each soul needs it's own body... If more than one tries to occupy one body, I believe that they would ultimately rip the body apart trying to gain sole possession over it.

Such a question can't be answered by Science,I believe,for Science doesn't believe in souls.

I have DID and PTSD. My therapist told me DID is the brains (minds) way of dealing with insanity around you that your mind can't handle. Yes I was abused. I was Dx'd with DID about 6 years ago.

As far as I know I have no other souls inside me I do have alters.

There is nothing supernatural about multiple personality disorders. It is perfectly scientific.

Even the Bible speaks of possession and Christ cast MANY demons from one man. Possession is mentioned in almost every culture through out time. Show me anywhere that it is written that 2 or more souls/entities can not inhabit 1 body. In essence that is what one form of remote viewing is where you send your astral body (essentially your soul) to another person and you see through their eyes. Another misconception about mpd is that it is when a person just acts different around some people and that is not it at all. when a person has mpd each personality in most cases has a different name and in many cases 1 personality may have allergies while another may not to the point that even blind tests will reveal the allergies so that it can be proven that it's not just a psychosomatic allergy. The majority of these cases are from psychological trauma but I believe it is possible that some small percentage may be from possession of some type.

Multiple personalities is a way for the mind to cope, a mind with an illness. I don't think that it is possible for their to be more than one soul in a singular body. It just isn't possible.

I completely agree with Langniape but I still find it hilarous that folks seem to think that more that one soul "wouldn't fit" in one body. I mean is the soul (what is considered by most an etheral and mystical thing, given to the same rules and laws as water or a cup of flour? As much as I agree that a multiple personality disorder is not a multiple soul disorder, I don't think human volume is limiting to souls if they exist. That would imply that if you lost a lot of weight, your soul might be getting squeezed out your ears lol.

They have nothing to do with each other. Having multiple personalities doesn't have anything to do with having more than one soul in the body.

MPD, Multiple personality disorder is generaly caused and made thru coping mechanism formed through traumatic experiences. Not just one experience but repeated saver abuse and or trauma be it physical or mental . Its a way to keep the mind from being damaged and to dissociates for what is really happening and generaly what the person can not do any thing about.

One body one soul is my belief...

i guess anything can be possible
