Have any of you had dreams where you get injured and upon waking up you physically feel the pain for hours or even a few days afterwords?

If so what waas the dream about, and did the after-effect freak you out a bit?

Does anyone have any ideas why this might happen? I know of some but I am open to hearing what others think and I am curious.

I had a strange dream once about a monster chasing after me and I was crawling through a tunnel to get away. As I was just about to make it out and free an identical monster clamped his mouth down onto my side ripping at my skin. I woke up and my side physically was in pain and sore.

It lasted a day and I just put it down to clenching my muscles in my sleep.

I don't remember anything about a dream associated with it, but I once woke up with my shoulder dislocated! People have tried telling me it's physically impossible to dislocate your shoulder in your sleep...

hmmm... that doesn't sound very nice... at all... but I don't think most dreams like these would be.

I guess before anyone asks I will tell you about mine.

In mine a ghost was very mad at me and started throwing all these bottles at and around me so that they would break and cut my skin.

When I woke up I felt like it had really happened and it felt like the shards of glass where still in my skin... it kept feeling like all those little tiny shards were stuck there no matter how much I rubbed or scratched to get the feeling to go away. The pain/prickly feeling lasted almost constantly for the first day, and then came off and on for the next two.

It was very uncomfortable since the bottles had broken on my arm and on my hip on the other side. and also on my calf on the same side as my arm. It covered a pretty large area and even in the spots where a bottle had broken near me and only a little bit of the glass had cut my skin I still felt it.

Most of the misadventures of the body part injuries are succeptable to sleeping the wrong way.

While I agree that sleeping the wrong way can be an explaination, sometimes it is not enough. I have had nightmares, and upon waking have had pain. I think it may be that your mind makes it so real, that the body cannot tell the difference. However, this is just my opinion.

Yes that is what I think... I think that maybe your brain sends messages telling your body that it is actually real and not a dream.

I have woken up with my ankle sprained.... idk how it happened but there was no dream to go with it either... I just look at it as a fluke. (lol the doctor looked at me like I was crazy when I told him that I just woke up with it.)

it could also be a result of night terror like behavior where people have night mares and in turn hit thier partners, and move around in bed screaing and thrashing? I have yet to see anybody prove that your dreams can have physical manifestations.

This has happened to me lots of times. I told a doctor about it once. He told me it was fairly common. The thoery on this is that in your sleep you get a pain or a cramp and when the signal goes to your brain that your in pain, you subconscious slips it into your dream. That's why if you are stabbed in the leg, you have leg pain. Only the dream didnt cause it. Actual pain caused that part of the dream. It's weird, but makes perfect sense to me.

Don't even get me started with night terrors...I hit my X on accident in the face because of those. Clocked her a good one, I did.

Even jump out of bed wanting to fight the wind, sometimes I hit the wall next to by bed before I wake up...Finding my hand bloodied in the process. Unless someone is there to actually witness it...They think I am full of it at times.

Very good explanation from the lot of you though.

Wow.. have heard other ppl tell me about doing things like that in their sleep. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that... Normally once I sleep i don't move at all.... it's like I'm dead.

When you have night terrors do you remember them? I have heard that sleepwalkers do not remember walking in their sleep but have never been told or not wheather ppl who get night terrors like that remember them.

Sometimes I'll have dreams where I'll bump my arm or something and a few days later I'll have a small bruise where I got hit. It must of been from my dream because I don't recall hitting myself in the area where I got the bruise at.

Yes I have had many of these such dreams. I put it down to the fact that my subconscious is actually in the dream and by this what happens to it happens to me. Even though we are not physically there because our subconscious is we tend to feel the pain and at times even have the bruises to show it. It is our body feeling the hurt through our subconscious and reacting to it.

Yes I have. It is the same dream I have every night I fall down as I am running and I hit my knee several times and when I wake up usually it hurts for about 4 or 5 hours afterwards.

I believe that when you dream it is maybe another world where you are there in a sense. Which could cause this.

I have always been able to feel in my dreams...from a minor bee sting to being shot, or stabbed and there have been a lot of them that when I woke I was in a cold sweat for I thought I was dying...

When I was little I felt the impact from falling and never woke before I landed...I would always hit hard and feel every part of what it would feel like if I did it in real life...

I have been shot many times and felt the bullets enter my body...when I was in the Gulf the first time around just before the ground war a jet came down on a run...I could see the bullets impacting the ground but I could not get out of the way...the rounds cut my right leg off and I was lying there....looking at it...not attached to me anymore...I never knew that you could not feel in dreams or for that matter they have always been in color...not sure if that plays into it or not...might be interesting to see if the ones that feel pain dream in color....

I have an absolutely serious and true story. I was sleeping and I had this dream that I was being stabbed by oompaloompas and when I woke up my sheets were red with blood. Somehow two pounds of my flesh was cut off and disappeared. It really freaked me out and the doctor said he had no idea what to tell me

It's a psychosomatic response to the dream. You felt the pain and your mind is still feeling it even though it isn't real. Pain is nothing more than your brain responding to electrical signals, it is the same in reverse, your brain is what 'tells' parts of your body to hurt.

Yes. I've had several dreams like that. But one inparticular freaked me out.

I was running in a castle and something was chasing me. And i just kept on running and then I turned around for some odd reason and there was a charming yet incoherent figure standing behind me. It came and kissed me and when I woke up I had a lot of blood in my mouth.

I went to the bathrrom to check my tongue and insides of my cheeks and nothing was wrong. Though I had a terrible toothache for almost a week afterwards.....

Well the only thing that's ever really happened to me was that my foot cramped when I was sleeping.

I don't remember what I was dreaming about, but I know it was something scary because I subconsciously started to clench the muscles in my feet and I woke up from the pain of the cramp in my foot.

I think it can happen, look at people who use deep meditation to control body temperature or their heartbeat etc. Whether its considered mind over matter I don’t know for sure but with sleeping you can get into those deep realms that if you are in a night terror and it’s bad enough or have had a past tragedy you will suggest something but it only lasts temporarily. If it lasts more than a day it would then be a combination of suggestion with sleeping wrong or thrashing or even sleepwalking.

I honestly can't imagine not having color in my dreams, it's part of what makes it so wonderful. (I can't remember ever having a single dream in my life where it was in black and white.)

Something I have been kinda of wondering is if the dream world is just a veil for the etherical or astral realm, because I have woke up with many pains from battles which maybe associated with sleeping wrong, but how do you explain waking up with scars that u saw your flesh ripped and then healed later and the scar be there in the morning and it was not there the night before. Funny huh?

I have night terrors and have since I was a child.. I have often woke up to bloody scratches and bruises that I can not explain.. I feel as has been said it could well be self manifested or it could be things unseen to most as the cause.. I don't know why it happens but I find it interesting as to go to sleep and dream of fighting spiritually and to awake feeling as though you have been ran over by a mack truck and feel this way for days after the dream...

princesskayd1 ~LMAO~ some of the funniest things come from typing fast here...

I must have worded it wrong. I meant that I have never thought that others couldn't feel pain in their dreams.
I do dream in color.
I wasn't sure if there was tie between the two.

Also when I dream I don't know that it is a dream and that everything looks and feels so real. I feel hot cold which might be what I am feeling in the room or it could be tied to how I am sleeping but I wouldn't know how to explain the fact that I can feel multiple places of pain at once like being shot several times in different places that I cannot see to being tied to a sleeping postion. There are times when I do dream that I figure out it is one and things change I can control the dream instead of just being along for the ride.

I would like to know if all that have posted here that feel pain think that the situation is real or know that they are dreaming and if they dream in color?

I had a dream I was in a fight and I was getting shot over and over with automatic weapons. I felt the bullets enter my body and everything. one of the guys put a shotgun up to my head and pulled the trigger. I saw the shot flying down the barrel. Right before it hit me, I woke up drenched in sweat. Once I calmed down, the only thing that hurt was my hand because I punched my 3 in thick wood headboard so hard I broke it in half.

I used to have a recurring dream about going camping with some of my friends ... the whole dream was in black and white except for a snake that was a bright red and yellow. With each dream, the snake came closer and closer ... then the final dream I was on a picnic table and the snake had slithered up to me, my friend told me not to move and it would go away ... I tried to be as still as possible, but my hand jerked and the snake bit me on the hand right between my thumb and pointer finger .... It hurt so bad. I woke up right after that and my hand was still hurting.

I have also had dreams where I couldn't move my legs and other issues .... lol ... not sure what causes it ... I just figured I have strange and vivid dreams

Literal dreaming is where the dream is actually happening to you a subconscious thought can convince you that something not real is real and why most addictions are more psychological than anything else. If you have a dream that your arm is ripped off and you feel the pain in your shoulder because that is what you expect to feel.

A lot of what you feel is psychological, even with wounds that you remember getting. For instance, have you ever 'forgotten' that you had something like a cut or bruise while enveloped in conversation with somebody, and once you brought yourself to think about that injury once again it begins to hurt again?

If you can convince your brain that you are injured, and your brain has become constantly aware of it, it is possible that you taught your brain to feel that pain.

I'm still fealing the pain from a dream that I had. I had a dream where I fell on my back and nearily killed myself. My back hasn't stopped hurting.. I've had this problem since i was a kid and I think its because when I sleep, I release and alter my energies to suit the purpose for the time and somehow pain is trasfered from the dreams because it alters the energy flow to the point that was injured in the dream.

I think if the dream seems real enough to the person, then their energy will alter itself to protect the spot the body thinks is injuired which leads to the pain...

I think it was stated above already but this is called a literal dream..... I mean have you ever dreamed that you were on the toilet and wake up urinating on yourself? Seems pretty literal to me. lol. You could be astrally somewhere else doing what you are dreaming if that makes sense......

The mind is the most powerful thing in existence, i have had these dreams on nemerous ocasions, from running and tripping on a road and waking to find slight abraisons and pain in my knee, to a full out bleeding cut over my right eye.

When the mind is fully unleashed and something is believed so badly the mind is able to control the physical body to the cellular level, at the least.
So when in a dream that seems absolutely real, as i am somewhat gifted with an overly vivid and powerful imagionation, the mind has no other reason then to create the real.

That is why that no matter how many people say they witness their own death in a dream, it is impossible. If your mind dies in a dream it dies in real life, if you believe that you have fully witnessed your death in a dream the more likely senerio is that you witnessed to the mere point that you died, and when you awoke you filled in the blank by thinking about it, and came to the conclusion that you had parished.

I've had dreams where I've fallen down the stairs, wake up and my legs be hurting, or arms. I dont know where it comes from. Maybe since you're feeling the physical pain in your dreams, your mind registers it after you wake up... dunno.

I've had those kinds of dreams, but only every once in awhile. The pain is mostly on my spine in the middle of my back. And when I wake up the shock makes me feel pain in that area... Usually when I wake up I'm tense and my back is upward because I'm afraid to lay down with the pain... It's kind of weird but I guess it could be linking to back problems...
I've also had dreams where I've been shot in the back and stabbed in my gut... It's kind of a shock to your system though so I assume that's why you feel the pain physically... Sometimes I wake up immediately from the shock but other times I stay asleep. It's kind of bizarre. D:

I cant say that I got hurt directly in a dream, but as a consequence of a dream, uppon waking up, dreaming something very lively, and after that, half in a dream, and half awake, fallen of the bed. It was a medium injury, in wich no particular damage was inflicted, but I was rather shocked, as, what am I doing here beside my bed, a bit shaken from the fall.

But thats about it.

Luckly my bed is not a high one.

A few weeks ago, I had a dream I was pregnant and going to the hospital because I wanted to have the baby. In the dream, I was on an elevator when I started having contractions. I woke up a few minutes later with my bladder cramping up, I felt like my eyeballs were floating. LOL

I've also had an experience where I fell asleep listening to the radio. I heard a song while sleeping and my dream focused around it.

Your mind tries to rationalize however it can. If you're waking up with bruises, you are either tossing and turning so hard or you are beating yourself up. Are you feeling guilty about something? Could be that you're doing just that, unconsiously 'beating yourself up' over something.

In dreams it is possible to experience many things including pain, sense of smell, sense of touch etc., but the mystery I think arises when you awake with a bruise, or a cut on your body!

I used to have a repetitve dream that I actually felt... It was mostly the same. It altered over time: I remember consciously wondering what I could do to change it after I woke up. The dream was of someone choking me... Over time, it evolved to a point where it hurt but that he let loose and I said something. I could never remember the words when I woke up and I couldn't remember his face for very long after the dream. If I didn't have the dream for a long time I wouldn't think about it.

That repetitive dream did actually come true: my fiance got drunk and did choke me, but because of the dream I knew to remain calm and knew what to say to him when he briefly let loose... His hands lingered loosely about my neck before he finally let go, as if he was unsure if it was realty or an alcohol induced illusion. The engagement didn't last very long after that. He's sober now...

I think I was actually more calm and relaxed because of the dream, and that working through it with each progressive dream helped me. In the first dream, his hands were still tight around my throat when I woke up, and my throat hurt so bad!!!

Definitely! Premonition can be a really good thing if you recognize the actual event when it first starts happening! If you recognize it in time, you do have at least some chance to change the outcome!

When I dream recently, it is all work related LMAO, last night my dream woke me up with the notion that my whiteboard pens had grown legs and were walking from me. The funny thing is I need to buy some for tutoring a class on Monday, so maybe dreams express our conscious thoughts also :)

It happened to me many times before... I remember once I dreamt that I slid down a mountain and then fell into the ocean and then I woke up with scrapes on my hands. It didn't really freak me out that much, I was just curious as to how I got the marks and I have no idea to why this happens.
