I am curious to hear about people’s religious or spiritual paths and what if any magickal studies this has lead them to pursue. I would also like to hear how this has enriched their lives and what if any unusual things they have experienced.

I grew up as a non-denominational Christian as my father was the church pastor and I taught Sunday school. However my children are agnostics and an evolutionist which got me to thinking. About 5 years ago I started to research other religions and beliefs. At this time I have none, preferring to believe that once you die thats it, final.

Why do we want a path? Can't we just stumble along in a drunken state of false gods and personal enrichment?

So many people use religion, spirituality, the occult to enhance their own viewpoint of the world that is merely a choice of which to subscribe to if any. Pleny use capitalism as their path to prevent any morals or ethics from standing in their way to achieve certain goals.

My path is not defined by an external source such as religious dogma, cannon, or other doctrine.

I believe people have an inherent sense of right and wrong as well as what it means to be human and humane. If we could just stick to that we might have avoid a few blights on our human history.

Well now that I have had some many of you share with me it would be downright rude not to return in kind. I am a Kemetic pagan which means that I worship the Gods and Goddesses of Egypt. I have dedicated myself as a priest of Anubis and the most unusual experience I have had is the assumption of the God form ritual which is really an amazing experience.

Cathlic, but my belief is in Love, Karma, gratitude, faith in God and the power of now-being in the moment. I know there is a high "force" at work and I can benifit from it. I believe in reincarnation as need be. I believe in Jesus and Budda. I love the Dalilama. I believe we need each other. I believe in the power of unconditional love.

I have no set path, since I do not follow any man made religion, as it is not for me...I have set my own path, which I prefer to name Universal Alchemy.

It seems to be derived from the ageless Sumerian beliefs that we are bound by universal ties to which ever is nessessary for any time day or night.

It is more like common sense then anything. As being caught up in the omnipresence of the universe, as the energies are given openly, I see no point in itemizing it into any set category.

I walk, live and act as I am a humbled individual who realizes that to partake in the universal energies is not only a right, but privilage. So be it, so it shall be done in a sense.

As the Sumerian beliefs are older than any other cultures, many have been borrowed and shown differant ideals as suited best by which ever culture deems nessessary to change up for conveniance.

I am my own, with the universe to guide me.

"Let it be that shall be, no more given to the one who would be." A universal motto.

I believe I was born a Pagan on the inside. My parents were Unitarians. My father was a lapsed Catholic. I remember spending a lot of time in my back yard, talking to the trees, bugs, flowers, rabbits and squirrels. When I was 7, Monsignor Phucktard paid a visit to my father, and told him that he, his wife and his children were all going to hell unless he came back to the Church. I was baptized Catholic when I was 7. I went from being ok with my spiritual place in the universe, to being convinced that God hated me, and I'd be damned for eating meat on Friday, and so on. That lasted for about 20 years.

I began following Wicca when I was 27. That was the year I came home.

I don't belive inb religion, it has raped anything we could have ever known about what was actually written in the bible. We have the catholics to thank for this. the popes throughout history have continually removed things from the bible to suit thier own greed, so that the people would belive what they wanted them to, not what had acctually happened. so I have no reason to conform to what a religion wants you to belive.

I was raised a devout Catholic. Then I grew up. I have searched out many Christian religions. I have checked out many non Christian religions. I guess you could say I am following the path of still learning. My son is a Wiccan. I find this path fascinating. By the way, I did not bring him up in any set religion. Others in the family tried to lead him down their path. He discovered Wicca on his own. I believe that above all else, religion is a personal belief that must be arrived at on ones own. I hope that makes some sense.

Firstly, i dont and wouldnt condone or piss take anyone for their beleifs as i have utter restpect for each individual.

I must say though, i dont belive that any one should be penalised in any way for what they beleive in.

it happens a lot unfortunatley.

Hmm, a path? Yeah I gues I have one, and that would be the complete understandings and worship of the materialistic existence the way it is through my spirit/ideas/eyes only. No false gods, no false leaderhips, no false religions, no incomplete sciences, wich lead no where but servants to another in some false sistem to others ideas, but the pure understanding of the same, and use it to complete the path/idea of ones own perception.

I was raised Catholic, but my current path is my own. I don't want to be tied to any religion with set rituals and practices. Your path should be you own.

I believe that children should be taught ethics, morals and some type of belief system to help guide their growth. As we see here, many changed from the paths with which they were raised and chose their own.

Key is that they did have a path when need as children, then as adults could make their own choices.

I am a recovering catholic ... lol

I believe that people need to explore their emotions, beliefs, morals, principles, etc on their own. Decide for yourself what is true and what is not. Don't let someone else dictate for you what you should believe or not believe.

I have the utmost respect for those who are passionate about their beliefs. It takes a lot of self-awareness to cultivate that passion, as well as a respect for life in general.

My path? ha - I'm still learning, I'm still growing ... what I do know is that I love deeply and care for those around me. I have often been called the "mom" to those around me because I am always looking out for them and nurturing them. I think it is so important to let people know that they matter .... so i try and do my part and let those around me know that they matter ... always.

I may have gotten off track there, but I will still put it out there for you all. lol

Even blazing your own trail is following some type of path. Moving in some direction even if it is your own.

I just think that we need to teach our kids a code of morals and ethics to which we, as a society. have agreed. Schools should help with that as well as other organizations. I don't know that religion is the only way, but it is one way to teach those things.

Personnally, right now I have completely fallen off of a path. I was raised as a Methodist, until about 8 months ago, when I finally admitted to myself that it was not what I believed, but rather what I had been programmed to believe. I am now trying to gain an education in Wicca, which I have always had an interest in and a respect for, but am having a hard time getting over what my friend and mentor has labeled the "fire and brimstone" panic whenever I get into certain aspects of study. Has anyone else been thru something siliar? And How do you get past it?

I was raised to be a non Christian. I have never worshipped a single God or anything like that.
Instead, I was raised to pay respect to the Maori God's who are more Elemental Guardians than anything else.
As for my path in life, I'm not quite sure as I've never really thought about what single path I may be on.
It's something to ponder over though

born catholic, I went to a Methodist church for Cabins boys and was christenexd church of England. After woking with those with physical disablement I decided I couldn't believ in 'God.',, but was amazed that I washed my hands before moving the cross in voluntary work (we use a churchs kitchen, to cook for the homeless.)

I find myself in an ocean of thoughts for this, but I imagine you wish specifics so I will try. My religious background began with christianity, and then dropped off basically at the age of fourteen. I have studied over thirty other religions, including buddhism, taoism, zen, confuscius, satanism, demonism, wiccan, paganism, wizardry, necromancy, and have started three of my own religions and ended them. I am native american and have always found an affinity for the earth and the sky and anything that I can acknowledge as real and true. My path has taken me across great distances and ideologies and is constantly under new reovation. I am set in the ways of the time and every six months to a year a new change takes place as kind of a universal update through the inter-spirit-web. lol My influences are constantly changing and I am aware only of the boundaries that I am given each scenario that I must live through. How is this all interesting? Basically, my faith resides in the fact that I am a small version of that which is understood as god and I have the free will to do with my abilities whatsoever I choose knowing that there are consequences good and bad for every action and thought.

I am a Wiccan and I had many things contribute to this choice for me...though I dont really believe it was a choice as much as a destiny. I wont share what brought me to this religion as it is quite personal.

I am a believer in God and Jesus. However have major issues with the christian and catholic religions. I feel more in tune with native american beliefs, Mother Earth etc.. I do believe in ESP Etc,. I had 2 separate moments of intuition occur in my life. 1. I was in the shower and had a vision of my 2 year old son down stairs taking out a light bulb from a lamp. when I got out of the shower and went down stairs, that is exactly what was occurring.
2. I was driving home from college late one eve, rural CA dark ,long way between town and home. I hit a deer - lost my headlights-blood on windows, i slammed on brakes, had a vision if don't let off brakes now you'll be off an 30 ft. embankment. My car was passed as I let off the brakes. Since I was way out of town I immediately got on towards home all dk and car window bloody, I made it to a neighbors and called my mate. The next day he went and saw where I almost went off a 30 ft embankment. So I believe in power and respect all persons beliefs and choices.

My core beliefs lie within the Wiccan religion. I mostly follow the Wiccan guidelines more than anything, and I do study magick. The only branch that I actually practice is crystal magick. Crystals are so amazing and each one is unique. No two pieces of something as simple as quartz crystal are exactly the same. My life has been enriched by crystal magick because they really help me to get a restful sleep and overcome insomnia. It sounds silly, but when you meditate on a crystal who has a property of alienating insomnia, it really will work.

I haven't had anything too crazy yet, at least nothing worth mentioning. Although if that ever does change, I'll be sure to let you all know. ;)

You know I thank you all for your response and for sharing something that is personal for so many. However as some one that wants to teach religious history and is at the moment trying for his history major I though that I might share this. As I am sure that many of you know most religions only differ on a few things like what to call thier divine on and if there is only one divine being. However many of the basic laws for interacting with each other and how a person should treat one another are the same. So why is it that we dont obey this laws more often than not? Where did they come from because frankly a selfserving animal such as man didnt come up with them thats for sure.

You know, the thing that I feel, I believe everybody feels, ones path should be followed out of its own inner, with a pure heart, no matter what one has chosen. Only than, after the inner has been realised, and the purity of the intention formed, can one walk his/her path toward its fullfilment, there is no doubt at that.

I'm Catholic and my path in life has been hard. I've turned to and practiced many different religions. I was always interested in studying religion and I was determined to find the one that was right for me, I tried being Wiccan, Hindi, Buddhist, Satanic, Atheist, and a few others but the religion I grew up with was never defeated.

I've been down in the dumps before and it took me a while in rehab to find myself, my beliefs, and the strength therein.

My faith makes me who I am, what I am, they way I think, and determines what I do and where I will go from here on in my life. It gives me the strength I need to look into the darkness and see a light the light being my own strength and knowledge. With God at my side I've felt stronger and happier then ever. Though there are those tough days I take pleasure in knowin that tomorrow may be better and that no matter what I will always be loved.

Some people may feel comfortable with a structured religion.. For me I follow spiritual principles of love, truth, giving and of cause the golden rule.

raised with no religion (taken to church because of family, but never actually forced to go once i could take care of myself well enough) which was a good thing... i had questions that could not really be answered by any straight forward religion. went christian for awhile, then found myself doubting when i was told to not study as deeply as i was (aka the "forbidden books of the bible") so to show them up i started reading about magick... then started having dreams about another life of mine and realizing that death wasn't the factor leading to heaven and hell ( i don't doubt that they exist, but at the same time i don't believe that it is an immediate "you're dead go here" thing). now i follow my own path, looking for more that i can believe to be truth.
i "practice" angelic magicks ("practice" meaning it comes naturally to me when i need to tap into the purest magick), i also study the mythology surrounding foxes and tap into the resource of the kitsune magick in me. as for ultimate study... the practice of luck... i do worship lady luck (real god or not, she's been kind to me), therefore i do partake in games of chance, as well as seeing just how well luck can hold out for me so far (... the irish blood aside) it's done well

Now I am a Wiccan. I follow the path of British Traditonal Wicca. I also study Druidism. I am taking courses to be a Wiccan priest and one to be a Druidic Bard.

I could write pages and pages on this, but I will try to be succinct. I was raised Baptist, in a very strict household, and when I had had enough at the age of 16, I was sent to a Baptist boarding academy (this was the King James version only, women-don't-wear-pants type of place). I graduated, went on to college, and began to compare religions. I studied Wicca for years, and this was a good jumping-off point for me as far as truly learning what I believed, because it was a nice break from...what had come before. Another milestone was when I took a graduate course in psychology during the course of my studies, all about how we learn religion from our parents and others in authority, and how it is passed along. For interesting reading on this topic, check out Boyer's Religion Explained. When I finally decided that the goddesses and gods of the pagan paths were not "real" in the typical sense, I sat down and cried. I had found the ideas of Gaia, Pan, Bacchus, Artemis and others wonderful. I now see them as archetypes -- sources of personal power.

When people ask, I usually say I am atheist, as that more closely describes me than anything else, although I suppose technically I'm more of an agnostic; for while I see no evidence for the existence of a deity that cannot be more simply explained through other means, I am open to the possibility should firm evidence present itself. Dawkins' The God Delusion is also good further reading for more along those lines.

I believe that magick works, although I believe that it is we who make it work, not some higher being. I think science will be better able to explain it in years to come.

I differentiate between "morality" and "ethics," seeing morality as something imposed upon others by others, and ethics as coming from the individual. If left to themselves, most people will adhere to a set of ethics deemed acceptable by society, something I believe to be a result of our evolution -- it being adaptive to do things for the good of the group.

I am comfortable with the fact that I do not know everything; I do not feel the need to make up gods and/or religious dogma to explain what I do not understand, as I feel that organized religions have done. I think it is much more honest to say, "I don't know/let's find out/let's wait and see" rather than assuming something supernatural.

LOL That's probably enough. I had tried to make this short, but religion is a fascinating topic for me, and I am always interested in others' beliefs as well.

I was raised in an open-minded Christian home (they DO exist! lol). My mother is Christian, and my father is into Witchcraft and the occult, but still follows Christianity to a point. So, pretty much, I started out Christian, gradually wandered more onto the Witchcraft path, and now I'm kind of stuck somewhere in between. Basically I am religion-less at the present. And I'm good with that!

Hmmm... My path...

I was raised by a couple of parents who have very light Christian beliefs, and they did not impress them on me, but rather allowed me to experience and investigate religion on my own.

After attemping to decipher the bible and visiting a few churches with friends, I felt that the club know as organized religion was not for me.

Instead, I live my life by listening to my heart and to the spirit of nature and the world around me. I am kind to all, unless they are unkind to me. And most of all, I value friends and family above all.

Personally I grew up in a Southern Baptist way of thinking. Throughout my journey in this world I have taken the time to explore many different religions and beliefs. Thus creating my own form of religion. Its a bit complicated to post here but ultimately it is based on the Pagan religion. Though there are bits from other religions. I do not believe in a conformed religion as it has been turned into something not beautiful or soul enlightened. I do not go to church and never will. The churches are based on how much you give financially anymore and I do not believe in that. No matter the god you chose to serve or not serve, money has nothing to do with it. Have been told it says in the bible you must give financially a certain amount of money and have read this passage. In my opinion you are meant to give a certain percentage of yourself to helping or aiding others in some form. But Im rambling now so shall come back later.

I was raised as a die hard Christian. Service every Tues, Thurs. and Sunday.
After I got to the age to "think for myself" I started to question certain things that wasnt being explained "according to the bible" but moreso by the secular rules imposed by those that lead the organization.
Since I didnt agree with that im now at the point where I believe in a Suprememe Being and I try to live my life as a good person. My wife is Wiccan and I will raise my children to fear a Supreme Being and understand that we are all apart of a Grand Design.
Dont know if you would call it a path but I am on different travels to personal enlightenment.

Myself personally am not into any religious beliefs and or magical impacts into my life. I am starting to delve into my pass lives and see where it started from and where it is headed but thats about it. I dont do any card readings or follow the stars etc etc, I just live my life by day.

However my wife is into card readings and she has been for a long long time, before I met her. I guess it depends on what and how you feel about it really.

I'm Christan, a bad one, but none the less I believe in God. I've thought about my beliefs a lot and tried many stupid things with magic and things I shouldn't be tampering with, like "spirit guides" and etc. I've been called a witch, and I hated it, so I stopped the day after, tampering with things I didn't know about. I love my God and I consider myself a bad Catholic.

I was raised a catholic and even at a young age I questioned and felt there was more to life than what I was told. I was lucky to have an open minded mother that taught me to find my own spiritual path and seek answers to my questions. So when I was old enough I did start seeking answers to my questions and found them in many ancient myths, and beliefs.

So I am eclectic pagan as I still follow my own path. I am a daughter of Isis and have always believed in an earth mother if that makes sense. Or mother nature, to which I also believe in Gaia.

I am drawn to female deities and in my worship and rituals I call upon many different feminine deities to help me through problems and difficulties in my life and myself.

I find this path I have taken to be a positive influence in my life. It opened my eyes to the world around me and has taught me to see beyond the negative and see the beauty in all round me even humans.

A spiritual quest for meaning can be difficult but also relaxing and peaceful. So good luck to all who are on their own spiritual quests.

I will leave you with a quote that I meditate on and reflect on to remind myself to be supportive of others and to be more tolerant towards others in whatever path they choose spiritually.

"Religions are all different roads converging upon the same point. What does it matter that we take different roads as long as we can reach the same goal." ~ Gandi

Time Magazine had an article on the Dalai Lama last week (TIME Vol. 171, NO. 13 | 2008, 3/31/2008).

Time Magazine March 31, 2008: A Monks Struggle

Fascinating reading. The article states that he considers Buddhism " more accurately called a science of mind that a religion." and also states that he is "the rare Buddhist to tell foreigners not to take up Buddhism but to study within their own traditions, where their roots are deepest."

I read the article today and it gave me pause. Someone so deep in their convictions that it leads them to seek to maintain peace. His path is a great one indeed.
