"Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark

Death Cab For Cutie- "I Will Follow You Into The Dark"

In the above song, Death Cab For Cutie describes death as going into the dark. Does anyone think that a couple's love and dedication to each other could surpass death?

Yes I believe love can travel beyond the grave because when one loves it is the souls for which that trap each other and the souls never die so the love never dies either.

Is it true? I do not know -- but it is worth having the faith that it may be. When you love someone so far beyond your own existence, i believe there is a power in that.

well, i happen to like DCFC but it's not them so much I'm focusing on but this particular song. I like the image they give, of death being this emptiness devoid of heaven or hell, just a place where two lovers can meet after death. it's a sweet idea, I guess.

what do you guys think of their image of a death without heaven or hell?

On the contrary, since death is the ultimate resolute, the love would last beyond it. Nothing can surpass death. But, anything can lingure on beyond it ultimately.

i like the image that death goes above heaven and hell. it's comforting because maybe the people who are in love can't be together in this life for some reason but can be together after death in emptiness.

Love is great an all, but after death? Heaven's waiting, and heaven is the ultimate love, which will probably replace whats in your heart.

If the emotional attachments are strong enough, there is no reason not to suppose that such a genuine love could transcend the mortal, and that is indeed a wonderful and reassuring thought, for such a thing to endure.

Being a hopeless romantic at times, I think true love can surpass death. Love is something so strong and undescribable, positive as well so I think it will be possible to lovers to be together in the afterlife.

There have been cases where the dead of their spouse has driven them to suicide in order to be with the person in death.

it's true, death is only the next step in the cycle of life so it doesn't make sense to me to fear death or anything that comes after it. and i hope that love can be joined after death, it seems only fitting since life on earth is such a pain for love.

Death does not change the emotional attachment we possess for another person. In fact, for the living, it explodes, yet fades as distant memories. For the dead, we have many stories of people trying to reach out from the grave to loved ones and others, but is that the living trying to keep the memory going ? Or does our bond continue ? We each will find out.

I think so. Love is definately more powerful than Death or so I believe. Me and my ex were once talking about it because he said that he was afraid of what was going to happen when we die. He was afraid that we wouldn't be together... And I sang that song to him actually and it made him feel better.

I think once you die, you are no longer concerned with anything you have left behind in this realm. You are a free spirit again, just as you were before your birth.

While love is an extremely strong emotion, I do not feel that the dearly departed carries it with them at all.

It is what is left in our hearts and memories.

Well I believe that we have a plan when we come here, mapped out before we are born. We make plans and contracts with other souls to make contact with and perhaps join with or not in this life. We may be enemies or friends or loves, whatever, but to learn from each other, our spiritual lessons.

Now "love" on the other side, in soul form? That would most likely be SOULMATES, as in ones that are the ones we choose to be with on the other side too, in all of the lives we have lived. Sometimes our soulmate is in this life with us and sometimes they are not here yet or left before us, to catch up with in another life or inbetween.

You know, we don't always love our soulmates in each life. They play different roles too. They can be enemies or a parent. A friend. We are just playing roles anyway.

I am the sort of person who kinda believes that when you're dead, you're dead. There isn't really anything after death - it's like going to sleep and never waking up. Mostly because I've been in nursing for so long and haven't ever seen anything to make me feel otherwise.

BUT in my heart I know that love does transcend death - I know that if you love your child, that love lives for generation after generation - because that child will love his children and so on .... If you love your mate - or husband or girlfriend or whatever .. that love lives long after you are gone. It lives in his or her attitude toward whomever they love after you - if someone has felt safe and loved in their life, they will seek that feeling and pass it to the person they are with. They share the feeling of being loved - by loving others.

Ack I can't make myself as clear as I'd like...I believe that the thing that connects us to other people is love. Even hate is a form of love - because you can't be bothered to hate something you don't care at all about. I mean - hate a toaster? Maybe for a minute - but hate a person who has been in your life and hurt you badly - you could probably carry that for quite a while. SOOOOO if something is loved - it lives forever....see? hehe

Love transcending death is surely nice to imagine. I would hope that someone loves me enough to find me after we are both dead.

I believe (but cannot say for sure) that this is an idea shared by many Christians, especially the elderly. You hear a lot of elderly Christians state they will see their deceased spouse in Heaven after death. If Christians feel they will be reunited after death, why shouldn't the rest of us?

DCFC's sentiment seems heartfelt; inspiration comes from many sources. Death and everlasting love seem to work for them, presumably in the here and now. Heaven and hell are irrelevent to me, and "true" love a treacherous muse.

Personally I see nothing 'magical' or 'spiritual' about love. It is a chemical reaction in your body. Like any chemical reaction, a bit of water/calcium carbonate/base/acid or whatever neutralizes it & is an antidote for 'love'. So any extra dimensional experience is dwarfed by the sheer physical reality of the reaction.

I used to believe at one time that we will continually come back if we did not get it right the first time...meaning soul mates missing the chance or opportunity to be with one another...but once that happened then what...to continue coming back and trying again and again....eh...not to be a sourpuss on things but I honestly don't know anymore...and I do hope that there is more to things after we die...but if there isn't people better make sure not to waste this life and really live it...

Well I don't believe we ever actually die, I believe our hearts and souls are constantly recycled and we live many lives on into infinity so with my believes, no matter what life you're on, you always have many, many more to go and you're love, you're true love will carry on, just as your heart and soul do, into whatever cavity or form you embody in your next life//lives.

I think the idea of death as darkness suggests that there is nothing after. The absence of anything. Death as dark implies that consciousness dies with the body. Following someone into that darkness, doesn't necessarily imply that they would be conscious and together. What I get from that song is that heaven and hell don't exist (no vacancies) and that death is sleep ("The time for sleep is now"). His holding her in the dark is metaphoric not literal. Granted I didn't write but that's how I interpret it.

Having said all that, can one really follow another through death without believing that something exists after death? You can only die as well and be nothing as they have become.

Now if your beliefs go elsewhere (reincarnation, afterlife, a great universal energy), then certainly it would be possible to be together even if you don't remember why.

Some said earlier in this thread that love never dies. I truly believe in this, for those that I have loved before even years ago, I still love now even though we have been apart for years.

I also believe that love is a constant not subject to the boundaries of just this lffe, and this may explain why it is that at times we meet people we instantly get along with, and have feelings of love for. :)

I believe true love is not contained within the restrictions of time. Love is immortal, eternal, and can far surpass the grave.

Even if one could only imagine, it would be likely, if one is assured in their belief, then it is so much more likely for them.

Who was it that had the famous poem.." slip softly into the great night..?"

I for one do not think that love transends all things. Death is the end of love as we know it here, even as a christian would believe love awaits you once you hit the pearly gates, do you think you would remember your loved ones that werent going to make it? It would be too painful to know that hell awaited them if thier lives werent leading to heaven. For the stories of loved ones appearing and guiding us after death maybe thats just someones way of easing us into knowing there are other forces out there. Most people would respond more favorable to a form they recognize then something foriegn. Just my two cents worth anyway

Well that is true. The Christian Bible states that loved ones that don't make it are erased from your memory.

I honestly do not believe this. What is the point of trying to create a life with friends, and family just to die and and there memory to be eliminated? That's one hell of a contradiction.

I believe that true love is so strong that yes, it does live on after death. i also believe in reincarnation, which leads me to believe that if two people have true love, they're destined to always meet up with each other in each lifetime. They might not be together in each lifetime, but I do believe that they are involved in each others lives in some way during each subsequent lifetime.

True love could and besides I believe we don't ever actually die, we are reincarnated, in the process our soulds are recycled so you then to carry on always loving that certain someone as long as it is a true love.

Like I said in my post earlier...... I feel as though ,love as we know it here, dies with us. I also believe that there are many diferent types of love, and one beings version of love could be to keep playing this game of creation. If there is one ultimate being creating us all, be it for one round or several trips through this life....... they must love what they have created for we are still here.......still debating.........still questioning.......and still loved.
Love deeply, for if it doesn't follow us.... it would be a tragedy to miss it here
