I was just thinking. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, everyone's favorite Prince of Darkness (Dracula not Ozzy) was foiled in his attempt to gain a foot hold in England and claim Dominion in London. Hunted down by Van Helsing and a small group of like minded individuals, Dracula is eventually defeated.
So this got me thinking.
THAT story happenned in the late 1800's (if memory serves). So the question I have is this:
How do you think Dracula would fare in London 2008?
I believe that he would blend in better because of the cultures that exist outside of the mainstream. His feeding could almost certainly go unchecked since essentially people do not seem to care these days!
He'd blend in better with the outside world and go with flow. As the Centurys change each year he will just fit right in and when he needs to feed there would be alot of people missing :)
Actually, i have given a lot of thought to how a vampire like Dracula would manage in 21t century England. Blending in is not a problem, but finding somewhere to live / store his coffin is another matter. Not being truly alive, he lacks an official identity - so he would ave no passport, no proof of ID, etc and would not be able to even open a bank account. of course, he could use his hypnotic powers to gain a foothold, but they dont work on just anyone, He woud also need the right victim. he would definitely need a "Renfield" - someone with a large enough house and not too many close friends and family to ask questions. remember that his influence eventually drives "renfields" mad.
That's a good point Karnstein, but in our lovely UK there are plenty of immigrants without the relevant papers who manage to get off-the-books jobs and places to live, so I can't see it being any different for the Uber-Vamp himself! All he'd have to do is pretend he couldn't speak much english and the government would be falling over themselves to help him...
Sounds not much diff than the USA...with the exception of Homeland Security.
true england now a days is so full if illegal immigrants. If dracula was to decide to come over here he would not have any trouble getting in!
And there are so many people being stabbed and murdered now that a few mysterious deaths wouldn't make any difference!!
In the book Dracula had vasts amount of gold at his dissposal, gold can be exchanged, he would have the money to get a passport, entry visas, a house in the middle of London, with a basement, and more than one door to the outside would be easy to find.
Now there would be more victims but they would not even be noticed missing. And in today's climate, no one would accept the fact that there was a vampire running around London, so his safety would be almost complete.
I'm sure he would blend right in with all the other people. But, the biting of people might give him away.
I think he would blend in very well. since 'living forever is so tempting' there would be many who would offer him blood in hopes of being turned.
since so many more people said that he would blend better I would just have to say I can see Dracula all gothed out. Im sure there are so many people out there that are so fasinated with vampires I dont even think he would have problems with feeding. There would be so many doners for him. Im sure.
i think through the times of life he would adapt to the surroundings he was put in. if he just awoke, he may be surprised and mystified at the world and its changes (to say the least!). But like any predator he would adapt to the enviroment he was placed in.
While I agree with the consensus that he would have no trouble at all blending in, what about the other factor: Van Helsing.
With Vampire knowledge in its abundance I think Dracula would feed on someone and a relative or lover would attempt to find out what happenned, and I think more than five people would follow him.
What about that?
I agree he would not have a problem blending in, he would also not have difficulties in obtaining food. There are blood banks and of course the loyal doners you can find online now days.
I do not think there would be any problem. According to most legends, Dracula had untold wealth. There would be no issue with him living somewhere excentric as people would know that he was wealthy beyond measure. He could pick up residence any where he chose. His powers of mind control would allow him to move about freely and undectected until he felt it necessary to reveal any thing.
He would be riding around in a Prius...listening to an iPod...talking on his iPhone
wearing Hemp clothes...Prada shades...tele-confrencing with business partners all over the world...drinking vintage virgin blood from Transylvania.
and all the while leading pretty young victims up to his loft apartment in London, after a night of partying.
I think he would fair fine. He could blend into the crowds at night. Tempt and lure some virgin and drain her dry.
I agree with most that he would blend right in with the gothic crowd.
However, he would have trouble in the areas of travel and finance. I believe the UK has something like the Patriot Act. He would need a really good assistant to help him clear customs, get a passport, get a bank account, etc.
I think since the general population does not believe in vampires, if Dracula was actually a real vampire...he would have a hell of a feeding ground to run in, like a fox in the hen house.
What I can't figure out is why most of the population tend to think that vampires only lure in virgins or whores. Kind of Hollywood there, ain't y'all? Trust the newbies to believe in the myths of films characterization. *eye roll*
I agree with the queen.. Big time like a fox in a hen house.. It is feeding frenzy for him.
I agree with ryet... cultures are so diverse today, he's just blend in.
I think he would fair quite well being rich having has centuries to aquire all the wealth he needed it would be nothing for him to have any papers needed drawn up for him to go anywhere he wanted. Plus with the styles and subcultures I think he would fit right in now a days.
I believe snow walkers second statement was the hunter backlash.
Humans are a paranoid people..true he has money..but ONCE the police caught wind or a vengeful brother/sister/aunt/uncle/child/dog/spawnofdevil decided he was evil..he would be hunted
i believe he would blend in very easily. his wealth and persuasive abilities would get him the contacts necessary for proper documentation. also, his feeding would go unnoticed because of the number of people who would offer themselves to a vampire in the hopes of being turned
Honestly, I don't believe he would have such an easy time fitting in with everyone else. Yes, our culture is diverse. But it doesn't leave many hiding places for a vampire. He would have to eventually get someone to help him and in taking on someone else, he would risk his identity. Sure he could try to survive by himself in the world as it today but profilers and detectives would catch up to him. I also think paranoia would get the better part of him after awhile in our world.
I would like to think we would have a chance and all, but how the heck would he?
I think Dracula would find himself hounded by humans who insist they're vampires just because their weird enough to like the taste of blood. Most likely he will kill them for being so lame. ;)
Yeah, but how would those people find out? And if they did, wouldn't the gossip get back to others you didn't worship him and saw him for what he was?
Think about it, some how or some way, someone would turn him in. People would try anything to kill him or at least get rid of him.
Would that cause him to become reclusive or become the godly figure of our days?
Money makes everything easier.. He had mass amounts. I'm pretty sure he would fit right in.. Probably fare better now. Things are more accepted now. As for his feeding i don't think he would even have to worry there are and yes it's sad to say but plenty of people out in the world that nobody would miss. Not to mention blood banks.
I think Dracula would fair much better in today's Society.
During the times of Dracula, people were more afraid, due to lore and superstition. The creation of a vampire, also differed with culture and beliefs. In the past if you admitted to being a Vampire--you'd be targeted to be killed.
Vampires were also drawn (artistically) and portrayed as monsters--undead creatures that drained the life out of the living.
Books and movies have made the Vampire more socially acceptable--having, in some cases, been portrayed more as "human" psychologically, emotionally and physically.
In this day and age, if you admitted to being a vampire--people would either run, think you had a few screws loose or be lured in due to curiosity.
Most people would neither admit to being afraid of a vampire nor would they be running to gather a group of people donned with stakes, holy water and other tools of the Vampire Hunter trade to hunt one down--that is unless there is a cult out there revering Van Helsing, that is prepared for the day when Vampires do return.
So, Dracula......
"Come out, come out, where ever you are...."
I do not think that he would have a problem fitting in with today's society. As much as things have changed over the years.
With enuf $$$ and a good, unscrupulous (oxymoron anyone?) lawyer, Dracula would be comfy. I doubt he'd go Goth, though. he survived the real Goth ages, the modern version would just make him laugh. hahahaha. Like that. Money and blood, and babes and blood, and even blokes and blood would all come easy to him in London town. Not sure about the dominion part. Do you mean as in politics?
I think a lot of people would accept him in if eve discovered because whether you believe in something or not, if a supernatural occurence were to happen these days, everyone would want to be there to take a part in it
i think with all the crazy people who watch buffy, he wouldn't fare too well.
He so wouldn't be goth. He would most likely have a business like appearance...professional and refined.
In many instances he would be able to lead an almost normal life. We tend to forget that in the book Dracula does move around during the daytime, he prefers to sleep then, but he does move in the sunlight, however his powers are limited, he can not change from whatever shape he is in, also his strenght and mind powers are curtailed. With all the vampires want to bes around he would have not problems dating or feeding.
he would blen fine but if he was found out he would be screwed
I think he could do it, like many people have said there's already alot of illegal immigrants in england, so why should people suspect him to be any thing else other than a human being? Unless he started killing people and they noticed that these people were missing and eventually it all led back to him...I imagine he would be in a world of trouble then.
I feel that in todays culture and times that Dracula would blend in without notice easily. just my 2 cents...
I think he would fare better since people are more open to different cultures these days and not so affraid of the unknown. plus people are more ignorant too so he would probably get very well established before anyone important caught on.
Personally I think he would fair very well..probably more so now then the 1800s. So many cultures exist today that he would fit into. As far as the money goes he could buy his way through whatever obstacles he would face as far as an identity and such...and as far as being hunted down...well look at all the missing children in the world that are never found and all the ones who abduct and kill them are never found...the population of today makes it easier to get "lost in the crowd".
I think he would blend in well ... people today are much more accepting of the eccentric. He may get a second glance - as many people do, but I don't think anyone would really think much of it.
I believe that he would blend in very well in this world
If he was found out, would he just leave and try to make another life for himself in some other country? Would he stay and try to go into hiding once more? I think if he was found out his best bet would be to leave and start a new life in another country, but would he have to keep running forever? Eventually if enough people found out about him news would spread and he wouldn't be able to exist (I didn't think live was an appropriate word) in peace any where.
I dunno. Maybe he'd have us all herded like food animals :)
Dracula was interpreted by some critiques as a personified fear of the civilized world(the victorian - then modern - society) who is attacked by the obscure forces of an primitive and magic East.So East against the West and ancient irrational believes against the reason and paganism against christianism.
Pretty interesting (also a little funny) point of view if we take into consideration the fact that the final blow gave to Dracula comes from Q.Morris , an US citizen.
;)
From this point of view I think that the forces would be the same today. So Dracula would fit pretty well desquised in a techology world but he would still prefere the strange isolated places.
He would still have to carry with him that sacred earth and this kind of earth is getting very rare today.Even in Transilvania!
He'd have a much better chance of going unnoticed. People are more open to the lifestyle these days than they were before. So, if he did his work in a way that is undetected by the law, probably no one would give him much thought (other than "Ooo, pretty cape!" :P).
I think that "getting unnoticed"now much better then in the XIXth century is not the point: he got unnoticed in that society too, isn`t it?
The New World Order has already defeated poor Drac.
No use wondering if he would survive because if he did he is already a member of the goddamn Skull and Bones society.
Trust me on this...
SP
Didn't the movie, "Dracula 2000" answer this question....
Even Dracula thought the world was much darker now then it used to be.....
the only question I think needs to be asked is:
How far would he go?
I can tell now, and from my own experience, that no one reads the posts here except the original one.
Good stuff.
he would do pretty well id say, since at present we have so many goth people and vampire-style people who would love to be transformed or even offer blood to the dark prince...
I would have to agree with that. I think he would do just fine in todays society.
I read them --- fast. Every once in awhile, there's a pearl.
He'd be fine, as long as he layed low (worked the graveyard shift for example) and only preyed on rather inconspicuous animals (such as rats & mice ...) like Louis in IWTV did at one point in the film. The minute he preyed on a human and someone found out, there'd a be a battle that would ensue and he'd be eventually labeled a terrorist and the government would do anything and everything to hunt him down, attempt to capture him (they might be sorry though if they captured him) and from there it would probably only get uglier.
Our modern, scientifick society would deny that such a thing as a vampire was possible, that alone is the vampire s main power, that people do not want to accept the truth of their reality, thus Dracuala would now be safer than in the 1800 s
could probably be done but would need someone who was really good at fake id's and such.
good possibility the odds are differant now I would think..
I really don't think the military is properly trained to take on Dracula. I know when I was in the army we received none pertaining to force protection against vampires of any stature.
I was highly armed with excellent small arms.
None of those weapons were stakes or anything that would harm a vampire.
It would be a slaughter, I'm telling ya.
I think that he would be fairly effective considering no one is really on the look out for vampires anymore. he could walk the streets and just be another "weirdo" to most people. By the time the CDC figured out it wasn't an epidemic in the city but a vampire loose, he's have all the foot hold and underground he needed for a base of operations. Good Question!
It was stated earlier about him not having ID. If we remember one of his powers was hypnosis it would be nothing for him to have an official fake a social number as well as some form of ID to bring proof of his existence if he wasnt the one to create the need for id
interesting question... in 2008. he wouldn't buy a castle but a company I guess...
I think he would do very well, more ways to hid nowadays.
I concur Nocturnis things become easier to blend as they get older look at dogs one point they were wild animals like anything else now we would trust them with our lives while sleeping
didnt they mak a movie a bout this ... lol answering your question i think he would fair rather well he wouldnt have ahard time at all
I bet no one would even notice him...these days - nothing monsterous is surprising.
He would blend well ever changing with the times...He wouls assuredly have servants who would take care of the mundane things such as housing and such....getting across the border for a shape shifter is not much of a problem...
feeding and killing he would have to dispose of the bodies well with the new technology and more knowledge they would start searching for him if bodies started popping up.
i think he would have already conquered london today.he would be blending in so well that london would be taken off gaurd and sweeped.
Dracula didn't need that much blood. He preferred a slow drain with Mina. Lucy was a mere dalliance that went too far; no one has ever claimed that Drac was perfect.
As was mentioned, his minions would take care of a lot, and therein lies the danger. Better that they not be Renfields. A little knowledge can be dangerous. Better that they be humans who were so well-paid they were smart enuf not to ask many questions.
Now if Drac started to stack up the vampire brides, he'd be in trouble. There are laws against that kind of thing.
Dracula in modern London? Hmm, well there is brilliant goth scene there so I would say he would have no problem hanging around there :)
He ... would be fucked. Honestly, he'd do something to get himself killed easily.
The affluent have no problem acquiring entry into any country and would have ample victims at his disposal because of his wealth.
I agree. He would blend in rather well. You see all the freaks around now? hahaha........:P
It would be much easier to survive these days, look at th ecultures that are so wide spread, it woul dbe much eaiser to hide in the crowd, and murder is wide spread, and goes unsolved every day. People work at night, and are rarley seen in the day, it would be much differant than back then and he could easily move amongst us without detection.
I think he would do great --- people would look the other way and blame it on something eles .and the people who didn't wouldn't be strong enough to stop him .
i think the world has stoped believing in things like dracula.....i think he'd kick ass.....retrobution time
Forgotten?
If so, why are there so many games, movies and books, not to mention Vampire communities, out there about him and his kind?
The fact that we are talking about him now, proves this point as well.
So many wealthy people are eccentric that I don't think he would stick out in the elite crowd at all. With all these years to think I am sure he could find his way around most things.
i think he would do very well in 2008 cuz he knows wat he needs 2 do 2 get wat he wants
dracula could take any form.. He blended well. But if people knew what he was, they would do anything to kill him off..
he would thrive...! and never be caught. The undergraound scene would serve him well
The count would do very well for himself, as stated he has a lot going for him. wealth, the smarts to survive as a predator. predators eventually do get hunted. I see him living comfortably with a few followers. He basically wouldnt have to worry, but only thing he would really worry about is the van helsing's of the world out to destroy any and all vampires. I think the count could hide himself well in the U.K...
Can you imagine the power to bend the will of others, the ability to change form, the ability to walk in the daylight? There would be no way to figure out what he is. If someone did they would simply disappear in the night or become one of his slaves. He was killed in the movie because he was already known about, and he just happened to bite someone who was treated by the person who knew of his existence. Now days his behavior would not be noticed as he walked amongst us in the shadows.
I think he would be just fine in any country of this modern day society. There's so many rich weirdos in the world these days, I'm not convinced Dracula's not out there some where....sharing a bucket of KFC with Elvis. =) But seriously, I don't think there are many Van Helsing types to push him back. Every body likes the "bad guy" anymore.
In today’s society, Dracula would go unnoticed if he so chooses. He might fare well drawing victims from the homeless or people who fall into the category of runaways. Of course, he could also flaunt his gothic blood drinking lifestyle with little fear of persecution in today’s non-secular government acceptance of eccentricities and fetishes.
In a society where nothing is forbidden anymore and there are so many weirdos out there, Dracula would fit very well... This is the time where anything is allowed, nothing is outcast and if you have the money and the power of seduction, nothing can stop you...
i think that he could blend quite well to be honest, depends if he watches Queen of the Damned and gets some crazy ideas
i think he could get along quite well if he justlooked all gothed out, he could just be a london goth.
I truly think he would succeed in his quest. With the current social make up of London these days it would be easy for him to blend in and set about his task.
If he does try, please let me know.
He be someother "weirdo" or "goth "person. He might be more scared of us now, then us of him..
I think he would come back stronger, more in depth if he was t come ack in a movie of 2008 i bet some hard core and more paaranormal, things will happen i se this as asite, love dracula, interview wit the vamprie etc, if he came back with a movie now it probably much more modern and in depth, of some horrors we never seen or heard before. I do hope thay make some thing,. new, i love old horror flicks.
He probably would do well, going completely unnoticed and blending in with everyone else.
He probably would not be noticed unless he wanted to be. My aunt is British, and she says that there can be the most amazingly bizarre person walking on a street, and the older Brits will pay him/her no mind and just go on about their business! Younger ones might make a comment.
Living in england, and hearing on the news about the stabbings, i dont think he would last very long, there have been 7 stabbing in the 6 months to a year, most of them asians but i would put it past them to stabb and kill the alturnitive people!
