Just a curious thought the other day...If someone is a Satanist (not that I am tho I have no prejudices) should they say "OMG," since it usually stands for 'Oh My God' and they don't consider 'God' theirs, then what?
Or is it that 'Their "God"' is different from the assumed theory that society usually takes on?
It could just be what everyone says in text talk and such and not really matter to the person, but I wonder if many people think about it...And if they do what is their opinion.

Interesting...I'd think that some may say it - sort of out of habit. Then again, they could say OMD - 'Oh my Devil'...

i like to think the phrase has permeated our culture practically to the extent of losing what it actually means and shifting into the generic exclamation category.

also, yeah, what some of the others before me said. it could be god with a lower case "g" and therefore a "catchall" deity of choice and not necessarily the judo-christian God.

I think OMG is defined by someone up there^ is a cotidian phrase replacing the exclamation connotation. People just say it like as an expression more than the word association. Jesus! Geez! Sheesh! I personally like: Oh my lord!, or Oh lordi!

Not to burst the discussion bubble here, but this thread has such an adolescent question to it. "OMG?" How low are these thread going to get? What level of maturity needs to be brought into these threads for them to work?

To answer this thread in my own way...

In light of the topic "Satanism", most "Satanists" do not nessessarily worship a "devil" deity. They simply live by a guideline brought about by one Anton Levay. Which is just living by a moral code in such a way that the individual does not believe in reincarnation, so they take every day as it is...

If someone messes with them in a manner that is discontent or disatisfying, then the "Satanist" deals with that individual according to their "Satanic" guidelines.

The phrase "Oh my god." I agree, should not be used by the Atheists. Since in fact they claim not to have a belief in ANY deity.

Of course, since we are on this topic, the pagans should say "Oh my god(s)", as plural since they tend to believe in more then one specific deity.

I don't think you should be allowed to say "oh fudge" unless you are a baker.


I think both deific satanists and nondeific satanists alike would find this insulting if it weren't so funny.

But when you consider that Satan means opposite, and the idealogy of satanism was created in response to the hipocritical christians La Vey dealt with, Satanism is a good name for it, as it is the opposite to christianity. Satanism is about self worship, and doing what feels right. Creating our own good and evil, and taking responsibility for it. Unlike some Christians who comit adultery, gamble and drink lots, but aslong as they go to church on Sunday and say sorry it's all good.

Well now, if the individual wishes to super impose the use of the term "using the lords name in vain", they would need to specify to which "lord" they refer to. Since the use of the term "lord" is usually associated with authority in one form or another.

Then again, I dont think society will digress into terms such as "oh my majesty", or "oh my maiden", or "oh my duke."

There seems to be a direct pattern here. So much "faith" in one term that acknowledges said deities, but denounces them in some cases such as the Christian belief.

The use of "blasphemy" is a very broad scope when using the "oh my god" phrase. The progression of this thread would then be considered to change to: Should the phrase "oh my god" be treated as blasphemy?

This thread has the lingering suggestion that someone is nitty picking a person who claims to be a Satanist.

I like how if a person of a faith other then theirs does something out of Character for their faith/ practice. People of other faiths are right there to lambast them, yet when confronted by their own obvious Contradictory behaviour relating to the guidelines of their faith, the same people blather incoherantly in their defense.

So said when Christians so badly want others held to the same restrictive pap that they are.

Regarding the original question, while I agree with SoulShroude that this is childish, I'm posting here so I'll answer.

OMG, whether said as an actual OMG or the elongated Oh My God, doesn't really mean anything to me. I use it frequently, but more often than not I'm actually saying 'gosh' as opposed to God. Why? Because I always have to monitor my language at work and around my minister Father.

Considering a lot of people say OMG and have it mean Oh My Gosh I don't see why you need to attach religion to it.

God is a term to refer to various deities. There are the greek gods/goddesses. There are satanists whom worship themselves and call themselves a god. And there are Christians that believe in a sole god.

All of these are a god to someone somewhere, the word "god" isn't an all inclusive Christian thing.

I am Reminded of an Episoid of Penn and Tellers Showtime show BullSh** Profainity.

An advocat for censorship in the show mentions how insteed of saying Quote "G--Damn It" unquote, she says Buddha Damn It, Penn then mentions how idiotic that is, so blasphemy to another believers icon is fine in her book.."?".

A person should have the right to say whatever they want without comment,opinion,prejudice,and so on.

So what if a Satanist says the occasional "omg".

Also, God/god isn't just a supreme deity, it's an embodiment. Meaning it can embody emotions, and such. It's just a phrase unless you give it meaning.

The word god is just a title and not a name so any deity that a group would worship would be their god although Satan was an angel, lol.

It's just a frame of reference. Many in the west identify with that word as meaning one deity but technically it is not fact. I see no reason why they couldn't say that relative to whomever they believe is god. Even atheists say that. It has become common in the English language to say the phrase. I don't think people even think of the literal connotation of saying it.

Islam has 100 names for God, one of them is a secret name. Judaism uses IHVH (transliterated), but generally if you capitalize G it becomes a name and not just a noun.

So, if you said OMg then your usage is not potentially blasphemous, and could apply to other gods and not the Monotheistic God, but as an achronym.

I believe you are suposed to smallcase o and m as well when you achronym ... so you should be saying omG or omg anyway. I recall in the early days of netspeak... or whatever you call it... we always wrote it omg anyway and Never OMG... Capitilization was yelling.

well since there is really no standardized definition of what OMG or omg means it's kind of pointless to say this or that person shouldn't say it even if you had a right to tell people what they can or cannot say which no one truly has. omg as it started out means generally oh my gosh or oh my god with nothing capitalized and that mainly because capitalization was/is considered yelling so whether they meant "God" "god" or "gosh" you would only know if you asked them and it is the intent behind it that makes the difference. with the advent of cellphones and texting these abbreviations became more popular than what they ever were originally on the internet. With texting the concept of yelling doesn't hold as true because there are still many phones without full keyboards and many are a pain in the ass to switch back and forth between caps and standard. Add to that many want to over dramatize everything anyway and you get everything in caps.

From any other religion assuming you didn't mean gosh it could be viewed as them referring to their god and not the Christian God so it's an intent issue.

From a satanists view it could be God as a purposeful slur of Gods name but I doubt many(not meaning just satanists) have that much fore thought with everything they say. So see above.

So to the original question only the satanist saying it knows if they should be saying it or not as only they know what was the intent behind it.

I'm an atheist and I still say "oh my god." It's a phrase I grew up with and am conditioned to use. Doesn't mean I'm actually referring to or acknowledging the existence of any particular deity. I also answer when other people use the phrase, too. lol. I wouldn't take the concept too seriously.

I have to disagree with you here because there is differents form of satanism. Not all satanists worship a devil. To mention a few forms of satanism

*Traditional or Spiritual Satanism - Also called Theistic Satanism or Luciferianism, is the oldest known form of Satanism. It has been around for Thousands of years and has even been traced back to the Roman times before the christian lord and savior "Jesus Christ" ever walked the Earth. The Traditional Satanists do actually claim the existence of a Satan or Lucifer as a "Higher Power or a Guiding Force." The Traditional Satanists don't literally worship Satan or Lucifer as their God. Those misconceptions have been created by the church and other nae sayers who want their respective religions to flourish on the fear of society. The Traditional Satanist looks at Satan or Lucifer as a "Father Figure" and idolize him in that capacity. It is in my understanding that some Traditional Satanists have performed a Sacrificial Ritual, but it is not required in their beliefs. Some Traditional Satanists touch on Demonology and go a lot deeper into that aspect of the spiritual realms.

People say OMG that don't believe in anything. It's just a 'saying'. I wouldn't analyze it.

The sub text of this question suggest that someone is attempting to gain leverage against another persons belief, by hyping a common phrase, somehow this implies that somehow the person is " slipping from their belief, (or professed practice).

Just to reply to the original question, yes because it's just a phrase. There's no rule about what anyone is allowed to say or not, there can be moral ones, but you can decide to obey them or not.

This reminds when I and a group of people were discussing about Atheists cursing god and they said, that they shouldn't do so, because they don't believe in anything, personally I wouldn't care less.

OMG is just an exclamation of surprise, it's not about offending or praising a god. Many use it, because they got used to it.

Once again i disagree with you. Im sorry hun but let me explain why all the different forms of satanism have the label satanism. There is a good reason behind it. First of all let us see what the word satan means.

Satan simply means "adversary" or opponent in Hebrew.
The Character Satan was later created by the church, to instill the fear of evil into the masses.

It can also be an adversary or opponent to how the world working and against what the world see as normal. That was an example and there is many examples on it. It only is needed to lift the eye up from the holybible and see it in a wider perspective so to speak. So yes you can be an satanist without to belive in what the holybible says satan is. I just wanted to clarifie this matter up in this topic.

Depends on what brand of satanist your talking about, Anton Levay worshipped the materealistic and flesh aspect of the world and our purpose in life, his theorie is if it feels right then do it! or it could be those who truely worship Satan, in any case since "oh my god" is a blasphamie I figure any true Satanist would jump at the chance to exloit God. To believe in Satan you have to believe in God since each is a counter balance.

Still, I never agreed with the Churches that Jesus hated Lucifer either. I think the only reason OMG is questionable at all is that one of the 10 commandments prohibits using gods name in vain. But yet I don't think many people believe saying OMG breaks the commandment.

Really, it would be the same logic as with OMG - Satan is the God that I worship, so when I say 'Good Lord', it is Satan I consider my 'Lord'. For me, saying 'bad Satan' would be counterproductive. The Satan I worship is not 'bad', He brings enlightenment and knowledge to those who seek it.

most satanist I know, say OMG mostly as a joke. It's weird. But it's what I have noticed.

i agree with karro up top OMG ...their god is SATAN...hence to their personal believes he is their god...so when they say it its in ref to him . athiest on the other hand do not believe in any "god " so to them its irrelevant.

yes they can say oh my god or by the gods it does not matter which diety you praise the OMG is just a phrase many say if i worshiped a rock and it was my god i could still say OMG but for me it would mean the rock

Same goes for the preps and stuck up snobs out there that use the initials of O.M. and G for their conversations.

Once the first ammendment is vandalized and stripped away from us, then so be it... But I doubt it will happen any time soon. Live with it and remind yourself that society couldnt care less about who says what to who.

it is actually telling when peoples obession over the degree of devotion they
practice, and apply to their beliefs, or philosophy.

It is rather notable that most who are so preoccupied with the devotion/or lack of devotion of others are usually in waining in their practiced faith. How often I see " hazard Christians" dust of their holy robe, and call people of other beliefs on petty semantics.

I would wager that such people are confronted by their own contridictions, and hypocrasies so much that they welcome.. Even pounce upon such petty things as a professed Satanist ejaculating OMG. I would suspect an underlying motive in such a case.

well of course they can they have their own form of higher power depending on the type of satanist some worship themselves as a god though in a way it may sound ironic at first but even though their god may be the opposite of anothers...

I personally am a Levayan Satanist and I do use the term "OMG". However, this oddly enough is a question that I have asked myself. My typical conclusion is that this term and others similar in nature are simply common phrases that have lost any traditional meaning. I grew up hearing other kids and even family members using the term quite often, yet I never attached any religious signifigance to it. Although I am sure that there are others who do easily identify it as a religious term, I personally never have. In my eyes it is a quite simple exclamation that many people put to much thought into.

well I think it is just a phase/ reaction not like they are calling on god for a prayer or anything as such. I say it but, out of habit nothing more.

So Why can't they say it ? I do not see any reason for them not to be able to say it. and it does not mean it is my god or theirs or anyone technically so....

it's more common speak than anything now. everyone says it no matter what religion they are. but i have hear variations like "oh my gods", "oh my goth" or "oh my thor".

Simple variations heard throughout society may be:

OMG - preppy
Oh my god - out of pure excitement
Oh my god(s) - Pagan or polythiestic
Oh my goth - Mockers of the goth genre
Oh my (name of god here) - Religious followers
Oh god - pure excitement in the most intimate of times

That about breaks it down...

I'm sure it might have been said above, but OMG is something everyone says. My boyfriend believe in nothing yet he still says it. It when said "Like omg did you see her pant" Or "Omg Really babe you went and did that?"
When you say it like that it holds no true true meaning to it.
Now when said like "Oh my god please help me" Or "Oh my lord do you hear me" Is more of a asking your God for help or begging for him to hear you.
I do not think it would make a difference if you use a lower case g to a upper case G, its all really the same.
