Dan and I went to see this movie opening day. It was the 440 showing and almost sold out..I have never see so many ppl at an afternoon showing. I love the book, liked the movie. I love the way ron howard conveys the point of "so what IF jesus did have a child" does that make him less miraculous? i love that point. What do the rest of you think?

I have read and seen that many people are protesting the book/movie. It is so ridiculous!! Dan Brown said in an interview (probably more than one, I only saw one) where the book is fiction, just a story. I guess some people have nothing better to do than protest something! lol

I've heard of the protests and I find it ridiculous personally. It's a book, If they do not like it, then they should ignore it. If it is really all that bad why would you wish to think on it even more by thinking out a protest?

I have read the book, and I would like to see the movie. I'm not sure with Tom Hanks being in the lead role as Robert Langdon though.

It's sad to me that the church's and individuals are protesting against this movie. Everyone has their own beliefs, their own rights.

i've read the book, and haven't seen the movie.

there's a lot of hype over the movie, and that means that i'll wait to see it for fear that the hype will be disapointingly over rated.

the book was really good, but i don't know if i would believe in it just becaues it's written down. i've never seen any proof of what it says in the book.

I have way to much to say on this subject to post it here, the movie and book was correct in MANY things, wrong in some, and left a LOT OUT.

Check this link out "Jesus lived in India

There is a lot more to this than most can imagine. Anyone want to chat about it, message me.

i believe a big part of the protest (whichs started long before the move) has to to with the "fact" section at the beginning of the book.

as someone raised by two very devout catholics (my father is the director of the catechetical institute for the archdiocese of a major city in the US) i can see why the in particular the hierarchy of the catholic church is so riled over the movie. there are many people, especially youth impressionable enough to be convinced by this, since enough of it is based on fact. if nothing else it is more than enough to sway the beliefs of many.

i grant it is fiction, but there are those who cannot quite seperate fiction from reality. however i really dont think people should get so personally insulted by heresy, or the mocking of their religion as a whole. while it is fanatics who start holy wars, it is people like this who carry them on.

all in all i found both to be very entertaing, and incredibly well executed. but i went to pick my kids up after and strongly recommended they did not see it. ;)

i havent read the davinci code, but im a bit skeptic about how all of this can make sense. im not religious or anything but i know this movie will outrage, as the book has already done, heaps of people,
and in saying so hope tom hanks doesnt score it in the middle.
if jesus was married, wouldnt he have sinned then?? this type of thing just brings alot of wtf thoughts to mind for me, so just ignore it...

The movie is very faithful to the book. But it helps a great deal to have read the book first as the film is very dialouge heavy.

I realize that Mr. Brown has said it is a work of fiction - certainly his "story" is. But there are historical events surrounding this book that are very much fact.

As Teabing says in the movie "The Bible wasn't sent down from heaven by facsimile."

Read the Gnostic gospels and study the true history of Constantine's "conversion". That speaks volumes in and of itself.

It speaks volumes to me that Brown's book has already sold over 40 million copies and that the film is breaking worldwide sales records; it says to me that people are searching; looking and questioning. Very much like Imagesinwords stated her church is encouraging. For the Christians here, how can any inquisitive gesture be wrong? "If you seek the truth...seek and ye shall find" right? For any others a fascinating and rich "expansion" to Western history.

But make no mistake, Brown's novel IS fiction. It overdramatizes points in the same way ANY good Tom Clancy novel does...Brown himself acknowledges it and makes no apologies. A good example here is the portrayal of the Opus Dei; in the novel you might think they are a cult of secret assassins; actual reality tells a MUCH different story; Numieries make up about only 30% of the groups population and for the most part they are only conservative, devout Catholics. In fact, the founder of the lay movement was sainted. There are numerous other examples that Brown lays out that simply are not supported by history OR science, such as the Merovingian line having no DNA characteristics in common with middle eastern descent, etc. Brown's book is fiction...most importantly, the author himself can't say that enoough these days.

The response of both Brown's book and the movie illustrate to me just how hungry people are for proof of "faith"; an oxymoron, of course, but the question of the ages.

Also if others decide to believe the movie/book,who cares?

If you are loyal to your belifs what others think shouldn't influence you.

I see all of the fuss created in Italy and most prolly is going to happen in Malta as well,as exagerated and unecessary.

It won't stop anyone from watching it.

Haven't seen the movie yet but loved the book. Ron Howard is a great director. But what I don't get is why all the fuss? This is a fictional work so why is the Church so up in arms about it? Isn't the church darwing more attention to the movie by the protest and comments they are making than if they had just let it go? I always tell the young ones to look beneath the surface as there is always more to the picture, to not accept everything that is told to them as the "gospel". to always question if the answer doesn't seem right.

The question Inferi asks is interesting as it sums up the connotation that has been rampant in the church for almost two mellinia - IS SEX "BAD" or SINFUL?

Come on! Goddess religions viewed sex as powerful and good. Therefore the masculine ruled "church" had to make it bad.

So it follows that to lay women low Mary Magdelane is villified, goddess religions are "WITCHCRAFT", Sex is EVIL and Christ could NEVER EVER have a child. Although it is VERY unusual for any Jewish man NOT to marry and have a family- especially during those "traditional" times.

Christ is a product of the early church. The man behind the myth has long been hidden.

I absolutely guarantee if this devolves into a jesus bashing thread, it will be closed. That would be a shame because I do believe there are people both on this thread, and on this site that understand the issues. As I and Mina pointed out...well hmm..maybe it was just Mina, I'm tipsy...but anyway...Jesus, as a historical figure was a Rabbi, and it, in fact, would have contradicted dogma for him NOT to be married; of course there is the issue that Jesus wasn't even deified until the meeting of the council of Nicine (sp?) so y'all get the picture....A LOT of HOLES...but the same can be said of any major religion; we should all try to be nice.

I read the book, unfortunately i've no still had time to go to watch the movie, i should go this weekend- at least i hope so. The books is really interesting, nice thesis and a good mix with thriller... about the protests it's absurd, as absurd was the church behaviour towards this matter, if they didn't want people to read the book they got the opposite effect...

i believe this movie and z book both ring more accurate than the church could ever be. And the church is in a panic about it. That is exciting. The church near my house has a sign that says that the davinci code is false. I think that it is hilarious. But I have yet to see z movie, i will go see it.

I'm gonna watch it again tomorrow, together with X-men 3. Haha!

Just check again if there's some part I missed. Though I think it's STILL bland.

well what i can say about Davinci Code That many shots where done here in Malta yes i could say that which is true that the Maltese Chruch was the only one to accept it becouse they belief we should think of our beliefs and be strong in what we belife. all of the above is true what i say is is not a film or a book how makes the man but is the man how makes the book. for those how thosen't know roman bible which we belief is to be the proper one . was forme and published by the first pope in 176 after christ due to the fact that there where many books around and many poeple where creating there own religion. therefore please don't base everythign you think on this movie/book and niether ignor it. if it's true jesus was still a good man and he did many good thinks ( this is writing inthe book of roman empire which they use to make a log of everything )
N.B. sorry for my english i am half asleep tired.

I went to see the movie the other night and it was fantastic, rarely do I sit through a movie that holds my interest as well.
I think that even if Jesus had bore a child it would not have made him less of what he was supposed to be in the bible, but more. I mean... what bigger miracle is man capable of than creating life?

i read the book and loved it; and the prequel to it called "angels & demons" i thought was even better - hopefully someday they make that book into a movie as well. going to see davinci code tonight hopefully. i'm not really paying attention to the negative reviews its been getting in the press, if i want to see a movie, i don't let anyone influence me against it. i prefer to form my own opinions. judging from what most people on our site have said, it sounds awesome anyways! looking forward to it!

You know everyone in the christian / catholic circles has been positively rabid about this film and while I've read the book and did see the film (good job that), I think most people missed the real unspoken bombshell.

No one can say for sure about Jesus and Mary and anything remotely definitive about that supposed scandal. However, the Council of Nicea is a matter of historical record and seems to underscore the idea that the bible was drastically vetted, edited and arranged by men with agendas. I'm surprised that it's mention didn't ruffle a few more feathers.

I'm thinking about going to see the movie, just for something to do.

I gave up on fiction as well, I stick to factual books.

Is the movie atleast entertaining?

Personally, I watched the movie yeasterday and I loved it. I noticed the few things Ron Howard changed in the film, and I still liked it. I do not care if it's fiction, just theories, or the full blown truth. I liked how Dan Brown pulled it all together in the book and I have read all his books except for Deception pointAnd I can not wait until his new book comes out called The Soloman Key Also a book with the character John Langdon in it. Did you know that that character was based on an actual Harverd Symbologist, Who also made the symbols for Brown's Book Angels and Demons I loved that book, Digital Fortress So far was good but it ended weakly. ^^ I like his works is all I have to say and I enjoyed the movie alot.

I am a historian. (See profile regarding History PhD plans.)

Yes, the subject matter has been covered before, but what is startling about this book is how it weaves that hidden "history" with factual evidence and has created something, which has resulted in a serious "re-thinking" of the Gnostic Gospels and the Council of Nicea (that's the correct spelling Sevenn).

"The Last Temptation of Christ" - while a good film - was set in the past and the subject matter was so controversial it was also "condemned,” but it lacked the spark needed to really get people talking and thinking. I remember when the movie came out and it seemed that it was hyped as mostly a "sexual" film and that doesn't speak well across generations and lifestyles. Besides, when "Last Temptation" was released there was no Internet to promote its theory.

"Dogma" was just too comedic for the Church to take seriously.

The DaVinci Code has made this theoretical information truly accessible to a wide range of people and may very well be the catalyst, which starts the change within our "industrialized" world.

The world has been in turmoil over this "religion" for MELLINIA. It is high time that the disingenuousness of the church is exposed and faith is re-examined for some sort of truth.
I think that every ideology has its time. It is time for us humans to question the conditions under which we live and re-examine the foundations of our faith.

I have hopes that the world will change for the better. I am not holding my breath - but despite the "meh" attitude that many take towards this movie and book - no one can deny that it has started a dialogue, which has rapidly gained momentum.

The DaVinci Code has been in the right place at the right time. I am glad that I am not the only person anymore to understand what has been “occult” thinking about these theories. One used to have to have a history degree to get this information.

I have heard that a few areas of the movie were pretty 'off' and sensationalized- in reference to a National Geographic documentary I watched. And I also learned that this book- much of it was taken from a few other book's ideas. If you see 'Da Vinci's Code' on the National Geographic TV lineup, you should check it out.

I read the book. I didnt see the movie cuz I really dont like movies to much. The point of the book;the bloodline of Christ is definatly an intersting one. I agree it would make Him no less miraculas. On the conrary. Ibelieve it would make him more so, for the simple fact that his children would also be devine.

You are correct, Cancer, about the theory of Jesus and Mary's union being around for ages - since the start of Christianity to be frank.

However, regarding the Council of Nicea - here is a link to what history tells us happened there: I am not going to cut and paste this lengthy info here (laugh).

If anyone wants to read what happened at the Council see this link:
Council of Nicea

As I understand it - the Council of Nicae was not where the canon was created or ratified - that came later.

I think Dogma is a great film by the way. And LTOC stars my favorite actor! Gotta love Willem Dafoe. :)

But no one can deny that Dan Brown's work had brought this theory to the forefront of world consciousness and this is something neither of the other two films was able to really do - strike a chord in the minds of the masses.

Happy Reading.

I misspoke. I confused the Council of Nicea with the Council of Jamnia (circa 90 AD). It is at Jamnia that the Rabi's selected the books of the old testament. Nicea was of course, entirely a catholic affair.

The thing that makes Dogma a great movie is that despite being a comedy, it is incredibly well researched. There's little about that movie that I can argue against.

Last temptation was visionary in that it showed Judas to be Jesus's best friend, and that it was indeed Jesus that asked Judas to betray him. These assertions are becoming more widely accepted today.

Thanks, Cancer - I misspoke too (laugh).

I am thinking of when the Gnostic Gospels were declared heretical which was later than the either of the Councils we refer to - I am not fresh on this - but think it was when the Cathars were persecuted (???) that the Gnostic Gospels were buried or hidden.

(My "area" of history up unitl I recently has been Western Civ from 1890-1945 mainly focusing on anti-semitism and the Holocaust.)

You're awesome, Prince!

People have been trying to prove JC being married for many years. It has been argued that his first "miracle" with the wine was indeed his own wedding! The theory being why would Mary, his mother, worry so much about the wine running out if it was not a very important event for her. The other reason for a married JC was that he was considered a "Rabbi" and traveled the land with several women. This was totally inappropriate for someone of his standing to do in that time period. For the respect that JC had as a teacher, and he did, he would not have this respect if he went with women if he was single. Society of the times would not approve of it, he would have been very unwelcome in the towns. But he was not, people run after him for his teaching and to hear his words.
I have always considered JC as more of an avatar than what the church made him out to be. If anyone reads his words and have an understanding of some Hindu teachings, it is not too hard to come to this reasoning. Reread his words and you will see what I mean. As an avatar, JC would not have been married. Period. It is simply not what they are able to do. His energy was focused in a different path. Hence the miracles of Healing. He would have the inner strength to overcome the many obstacles that a single man would face with his disciples, men and women. If he did run into trouble, he would have just left the area which is exactly what scriptures says he did. He taught to only those that wanted to hear and healed those that only wanted to be healed.
I have read the Holy Blood/Grail book and have a three volume VHS set of Da Vinci's life, I am familiar with what is trying to be said with this movie. I will see it only because I'm a Tom Hanks fan. Nothing more. It's fiction - and it's only a movie.

Does any movie ever really do a book justice?

This movie is good, I think. It follows the book pretty well and stays faithful to it. It is rather dialogue heavy though. I think it may be better if the book has been read - but it isn't necessary, as it can stand on its own.

Still - reading is always better. Tom Hanks was not whom I imagined Robert Langdon to be - but he did a great job as always.

Well I hear they were looking at Russell Crowe - he is more the age I thought Langdon should be...

but I would have liked to see a new person - or maybe someone like Patrick Dempsey - that age and looks!

Tom is great - just a bit older than I thought Langdon should be - but he pulled it off beautifully as he always does.

I haven't seen the movie yet but did read the book and greatly enjoyed it.
I know that this book is a fictional book with some truths throughout it but I love the way it has people talking.
In Dogma, they mentioned Mary and Joesph having kids and that's where the blood line came from (which, if you haven't seen this movie, run out and do so!) The movie also talks about how we should celebrate our faith, not mourn it and how humans got it all wrong...
It doesn't matter what faith you have, just that you have faith
This is why I love all the talking that this movie is causing. People talk and open their eyes to a whole world of misconceptions and lies.
If all this book/movie does is make people more open-minded, then I think everyone should see and read it.

The original idea behind Christ having to have been a virgin is that the catholic church conciders sex a sin, whether it is in the confines of marriage or not.. that is silly seeing as how we are created for it and commanded in the garden to be fruitful but anyways.. the idea was that if he had known Mary or anyone in the biblical sense that he would have been defiled and therefor his crucifixion would have done us no good.

Just soo the film yesterday and in my personal opion there is a lot to belive if you don't have a strong faith in what you do belive but the rest it's a very nice film beside even if gd had to havea child well the actions taken by him to help others are still good and that's what is relavant at the end of the day.

Actually the idea of Jesus being a virgin has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. The Bible was pre-Catholcism.

Well jesus was a real man as Mstjuan has stated...It is fact....God is not!!
Alot of the lost gospels were destroyed by the catholic church, they also tried to destroy alot of the older religions but failed with a few.....Oh yes a group of men a very long time ago decided to put forward to a largely uneducated people what there idea of religion was....lets just say that the people were conned..pity the fool!
Yes what jesus was tryng to teach was to have faith..... not in being catholic,or church of england or muslim..ect...ect
I have the book have not seen the film yet...very good read, cant wait to see the film.

I've read the book and seen the movie. Even though the movie doesn't begin to cover everything in the book, Ron Howard did a great job of pulling it all together and keeping the flow. I know that everyone thinks that Tom Hanks was wrong for the part but he was perfect. Robert Langdon was scholarly with a dry sense of humor which makes Tom Hanks perfect. The rest of the cast was perfectly selected as well.

I do not know what it is I have against this movie. I never read the book, never felt even the slightest inclination to do so (which is amazing because I read anything I can get my hands on) and just the thought of going to see that movie makes me angry. Weird. I really do not even know what it is I dislike about it, I barely know what it's about. Ah well, I'd rather stay home and read something else.

I dont really think much would change except for some super religious people you know but i think it would be awsome if it was true and he did have children like they say! i'm reading the book now and i saw the movie but it still makes you think it is a high possibility that we might not ever know about!

Hey Scarlett!

I went to see the movie a couple of days ago, It was awesome, like seeing the book unfold before your eyes. The director, Ron Howard, did a terrific job in depicting the movie.
Although, yes, the book is indeed far better than the movie.

It was awesome, 5 stars for this one.

Why wouldn't we hold high a man with such powers, even though he bared a child?
We can worship material things such as money, why not?
He did what he did, regardless of his sin.

Could not put the book down! It was a fun read.

I liked the movie but had a hard time with Tom Hanks as Langdon. Ian was great at 'the bad guy" as usual.

I was glad I had read teh book so long ago. I forgot how it ended so it was a surprise all over again.

I finished reading the book a little over a month ago. I loved it! I can't wait to see the movie.

I am reading a book by the author Simon Cox called Breaking the Davinci Code.

If you are done reading the book I would HIGHLY recomend reading this! It gives a lot of background information about certain things in the book. A lot of neat facts I didn't know.

I can't wait to see the movie. I am a fan of Tom Hanks. He is an excellent actor.

I finally watched the movie some week ago.

I loved it.

Most criticised it where I live, cause the book is more detailed.

Erm yes but that's the point of a movie,to shorten a story it's impossibile to make a whole book in one movie.

Anyway I loved it and I'll read the book someday.

I was aslo suggested to read Angels and Demons it is about what happened before the DA Vinci Code.

I read the book and loved it, but right now i'm in a position to where I can't see the movie. This sucks. I also heard about the protesters because the books go against Christian teaching and I also heard about the lawsuit against the author from a guy claiming that he stole his material. There's a lot of controversy swirling around this one little book. It's amazing how people in today's society take little things like books as insults
