Vampires are said to have personality defects that most of us regular mortals would consider odd or even crazy. Vampires are known to have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD is a neurobiological disorder where the affected have recurrent, intrusive thoughts, impulses, and obsessions of repetitive behaviors and mental acts.
Common symptoms of vampire OCD include bizarre checking and counting rituals. For example, a traditional method of escaping from a vampire was to throw down a handful of seeds. The vampire is powerless against its obsession to stop, pick up and count every single seed that was thrown down before doing anything else. An ancient method of stopping a vampire involved filling up its coffin with seeds. The vampire would never be able to escape from it's own impulses of check and counting the seeds.
Vampires also have a repetitive nature of untying every single knot that they come across. If you were to tie one thousand knots on one thousand strings a vampire would have to stop and untie all one thousand knots. It's sounds crazy to many people, but OCD is a real disorder that affects millions of people and vampires all over the world.
(this was an artical i came accross)http://www.zerotime.com/night/crazy.htm
Woops!! forgot my question for discussion
DOES ANYONE BELIVE IN THIS? have any of u vamps out there experinced this?
Anyone who believes they need to drink blood to live is definitely going to have a few "personality defects." ;)
not that bad just having thing be a multiple of five and only small knots
but never so back i would give up a meal
I, who am a sanguivore, find myself untying all of the knots that are tied in the grocery bags before bringing them upstairs. Even though we already have a ton of bags saved up for the small trash receptacles and have no need for more, I still catch myself untying the knots to save them. Only after my girlfriend tells me to stop doing that three or fours times will I actually stop. I also find myself stopping to straighten up everything that is out of place and even up the ends of towels that are hanging on the towel rack and making sure that all of the shoes and boots by the door or in the closet are parallel and even. I know I do a lot more OCD things than that, but they are just little things to my that I don't even notice and nobody really says anything to me at the time that I am doing it but later on when I am not even doing anything. Hope this helps gets things rolling for you. Carpe Noctem
Every vamp I personally know has some sort of quirk that one might call OCD. I don't have to count all the grains of sand on the beach before can go for a swim, but I do check and re-check that things are turned off before I leave the house. *heh* I know clean freaks and at least one vamp who can't sleep until their shoes are lined up in a neat little row under the edge of the bed. So there may be a little truth behindthe myth. *snicker*
i dont think ocd is a defect who hasnt got different traits thats what makes us unique
everyone has OCD to a point....some more so then others....
I have experienced this, I have the checking thing very bad. lol
yeah for some reason I love to untie knots but I never even heard of vampire OCD until now. But I still believe that everyone has some type of OCD situations that they have to go through in life.
OCD is a realaty, its not just the vampires but human also.
I believe in (ocd) but i do not know if i believe that a true vampire would have to count seeds or undo knots, but i have never thrown seeds at a vampire to see if he would count them...
sorry i didnt post sooner i had to count some seeds and then how maney letters were used in the post lol
I don't really think that vampires are more or less prone to OCD than anyone else.
I never really thought of it that way but yeah, I guess I would haev OCD. I have a habit of counting things over many times. Bugs the hell out of me if I don't do it.
I feel like OCD does find it's way into each life at some point. Mine is controlled and I have actually been diagnosed. Mostly with teeth brushing and hand washing.. but as i get older mine has gotten better.
However my best friend , her OCD has worsened over the last 10 years. She can't touch anything unless she uses instant hand sanatizer right afterward. and she carries like 3 bottles with her in her purse.
true throwing seeds to stop a vampire would only work if they were all together in a big sack from a good hight ... known to stop most things
as with most i too have ocd traits. however i think the corilation between vampires and ocd come from a person coming into their vampyric traits and they start noticing the things they do. which they might not have noticed before, and now that things are changing they think these traits are part of it, even when they have been doing it before they were self aware.
A very interesting thread....yes yes.....I have actually thought about this....Vampires and ocd.....Its a very good point..However OCD doesn't pertain to seeds alone...The vampires will go crazy then...Checking and rechecking almost everything....Is there any other methods which people used to do to exploit the Vampires weakness(OCD)apart from throwing seeds?
Sorry it was supposed to be
Are there any other methods.....blah blah
I dont know if OCD is a vamp thing or not.....But I know I have OCD the voices in my head told me so lol no I have a Dr. tell me that, I count alot of stuff and I always just thought it was cause I like math, who know it was a vampire thing......Oh and as for the knots I do that to but thats the OCD and the voices again lol.
But I can do other things to that might be related to being a vamp but I dont know. I can see anyones past, presant, and well I try not to go there but I can see ahead too. to really weard bumping someone and knowing how they will die. Any way thats off the topic
OCD... Yes easy to prove also! Merely toss a handful of grains on the ground near you, and if you suddenly begin to pick them up you are either a clean freak or a vampyre! Besure not to attempt this near dawn!
I think that this is very possible though i have never seen it happen or seen anything like it. Would be interesting to see if you did through down some seeds that the vampire would stop and count them.
I can see this, although I had never heard of vampire ocd, I was aware of it in humans.
I have heard of this, I heard that people used to protect themselves against vampires by hanging a jar of seeds outside their front door, and the vampire would have to count them all before entering.
Its a shame that a lot of you think this dis-order to be 'funny'. As an Englishman let me remind you of this...........In the United States, 1 in 50 adults have OCD, and twice that many have had it at some point in their lives.
Think before posting insensitive crap and read the thread and maybe you'll learn.
OCD sux. Im sure not many vampires have it though...how ridiculous.

If you consider yourself a Vampire- you are still a human with human traits. So you are bound to have personality disorders as humans do. This is not exclusive nor are you more apt to having it than anyone else.
After reading some of the latter posts, I am going to have to agree with BLOODLIFE. Read the thread before posting a comedic response because that is not what the thread is asking for. The people who have posted their OCD tendencies already did so because they are trying to help another learn more about this culture, NOT to be made fun of or sneered at because of things that they do or rather cannot stop themselves from doing. Have a little consideration for those around you before saying anything, and yes, it does help to read the thread and the responses to that thread in order to get a clear understanding of what some threads are asking.

Damn...I'll bet the Vampires go crazy during Hail Storms.....Heh hee
And i'm not making fun of the disease but Fictional Vampires who suffer from OCD...
yeah, i like doing tedious things, but i'm dont have ocd.
Yeah, I have OCD and it sucks! I have to take meds for it to keep it under control.
Counting seeds is one of the weardist things I have heard about vamps but the counting thing seems like we all do it so maybe there is something to it, I had heard the thing about you have to be asked into someones house but not the counting part, I never really held to much stock in that one anyway.
I didnt see any posts on here that are making fun of anyone who has OCD for real, I know if I didnt have it I wouldnt be able to joke about it on here or anywhere else for that matter.
I do bleieve it if it effects that many people all around but then again if people are always counting every single thing in life as most of us do then the real question cause all of us be effected with this in one way or another?
I've heard of this before, but I don't think all vampires necessarily have the compulsion to count everything and untie knots.
To the two darlings who were sensitive to this disease I thank u for making that point to everyone it is something very serious and very hard to live with so please those who think it's ok to joke it isn't so please don't adn to Gautham I do believe i heard something a while ago about a metal strainer and vampires, to get away from a vamp throw a metal strainer down and they will be forced to count each hole before continuing to catch their pray.
thank u all for your oppinons I'm glad it's been something many have thought about and have tossed around in their heads for a bit.
many hugs to u all I hope u all have a wonderful rest of the week!

no i dont...some people say throw rice down and then will have to count it...wivestales...
I would find it odd that many modern living vampires (who so often claim to be very seperate from the legendary or fictional vampires) would be so eager to adopt the personality disorders of the legend.
If one is to assume that a modern living vampire is a normal human for all intents, then of course they're subject to the same psychological pitfalls as the rest of us, but that would be due to genetics and environment and not vampirism.
However, if someone is trying to suggest that modern living vampires would have similar weaknesses (sunlight, OCD, garlic or god forbid moving water) and yet hold none of the powers of a legendary vampire (immortality, hypnotic powers, flight, strength, etc)...then I think we're talking about the cop out of a wannabe or delusional person who can fake the weaknesses but can't fake the powers.
I have OCD. But I'm not sure if it has anything to do with being a vampire or not. I know lots of humans that have OCD (along with many other issues).
i have a slight case of ocd however when it it time to go ont the hunt nothing stopes me from getting dinner
i posted an almost identical thread about a year ago - and got a lot of responses from vamps who admitted to having OCD. i suggested that the modern equivalent of the tangled fishing net and handful of rice ploy would be a rubics cube with the colours mixed up.
the traditional ploy was never meant to stop a vampire chasing you, but the idea was to distract him from leaving his grave by leaving it in the graveyard, or prevent him entering your home by leaving these things on the doorstep. i likened it to a fascination with puzzles rather than OCD. many mythical creatures seem obsessed with puzzles and riddles. many claiming to be vampires scoffed at this, but they got very upset recently when the game page closed down. LOL. until i ran my thread, the OCD connection didn't really occur to me, but it does seem a reccurent thing here.
Indeed that it does. Thank u for making me aware of this and as many greats have said (Great minds think alike!)
smiles!

I don't proclaim to be a vampire but I don't think that being one automatically gives you OCD. Some vampires are probably unlucky enough to have OCD. Remember that during the time that these legends came about, that people were scared. They felt powerless so they made up certain things that they thought would work in order to feel more in control.
karnstein has a keen understanding of the stories and the myths. It isn't necessarily a matter of OCD but many of the old stories relate to distracting them with puzzels or other things.
I've heard about vampires being OCD like that before..
but why are they that way.
I can understand that maybe their being OCD as mortals could have been heightened by the change..
but this is sort of referring to a mass of the vampires out there.
hhmmmm
I feel like I have a mild OCD...I have the habit of wanting to constantly check things..and its like my brain knows that i already did it..but i wont be able to calm down unless i check it multiple times..but man i do it with alot of things...Im not sure how it would be related to vampiric nature....but i suppose it could be possible...
Everyone is a little OCD about something. I don't think it's fair to assume that it applies only to vampires.
I don't think the seed thing is true. That is just crazy. Again too easy to throw a vampire off. I agree though with some of the others that it is possible vampires have OCD. I also agree we all have it to point. I always have to make sure I turned off the coffee pot and my curling iron or straightner before I leave. Even when I am sure I turned it off, I have to go back and check...
well most vampyres like my self dont feed on the blood but the life mana whitch you can get a number of ways other than the blood.... but it is still sweet
Uh, never actually heard of that one.
I'm actually diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder...And people with it are able to resist doing their "rituals", it just makes them uneasy or anxious.
i know several ocd people. i feel bad for them cause they cant help it.
im mildly ocd. i cant stand things being neat and orderly. i put things in their 'place' but its never straight. if there is a stack of papers, i will knock it over or turn part of the pile the wrong way.
someone did try to throw me off one night. friend of mine pissed me off and i ran after him. he then picked up some beads and threw them. i guess he heard this myth. all it did was piss me off more. i did catch him though hahaha!
Everyone has OCD to an extent, just some are worse than others.
Every time I see the title of this thread it makes me smile. VAMPIRE OCD, just looks funny. I still think we all have OCD to different extents...
Has to say i have this checking disorder i find myself constantly going aroudn picking up and cleaning at Home at work i cant stand it hell i find myself picking up after my best friend too and it drives her Mad but she fortuineately knows its just me now and lets it go phewww
I have OCD and I'm not a vampire. Guess I would fit right in with the vampire race. LOL
This is very interesting I have never heard anything like this before
Yes, I have heard this theory about vampires having OCD and I agree that they were once human and would be subject to similar traits.
OCD can be very serious...
I have it..I am aware that I have and I keep it under control......
One of my things is I cannot rest because I count and recount things in my head constantly. I cannot get my mind to slow down. So there are things I have to concentrate on to help in controling it.
There are people who have it so sever that it takes every thing they have just to get dressed.
I know a vamp who constantly checks her watch. She's ultra neat, too.
I have OCD quite bad, I have to have it so that all my shirts face the same way on the hanger and in my closet.. my hair has to be perfectly flat when I put it up. I've not heard of vampires that have OCD, and is something I will have to research more.. interesting topic.
As a human I have OCD. Have had since I was 11. It is with lotion, chapstik, and being clean, and cleaning. I can choose to add things to what I obsess about doing, such as at work, but the rest I an absolute must, 15-40times a day I put lotion and chapstick/lipstick on. 1-4 showers a day, and If I didn't have a life I would clean constantly. I also count stair steps, even if it is a flight of stairs that I have used a million times I count each step. As for knots, and seed counting, only when bored.
I have never heard that generalization that vampires have any kind of OCD.To generalize any group is to forget they are individuals. Is this your belief, I have not heard of it before. And I have been a vampire and in the communities for many years. What article or author are u citing for this assumpition.I would like to know, as it's news to me.
So by saying all vampires have OCD, it is saying we have mental issues? I don't agree with u at all here...
I think I would have to agree with cherryblossom in that all the little 'quirks' are what make each of us unique.
Vampires were supposed to have been distracted by having to count seeds, grains of rice and so on - it was only a matter of time of time before someone stuck a label on it
If I take that line; does being a vampire make you more likely to suffer OCD, or is it the other way around - if you suffer from OCD you are more likely to become a vampire ?
Of course, if people get too hung up on that label (assuming it is correct) pretty soon if you don't suffer from OCD you won't be able to be considered a vampire.
I have noticed that this whole site does feed people who simply have to complete something - the constant need to rate, post, earn favor, login .... spooky
I actually have OCD. It's sometimes annoying. But yet sometimes it's funny. I can control it on occasions but other times it's just like...CRAP!
