a phantom vehicle is ghostly apparation of a vehicle of some kind usually involved in fatal car crashes the same vehicle mysteriously reappears and disappears at the spot where the accident occurred. I've heard many reports on this. A famous one is the ghost train of Abe Lincoln one thing I dont understand is to how this could be because vehicles dont have souls can someone help me to better understand this
I live in Ny and there is a ghost train by us, In Poughkeepsie it is called,. The train station had lots of sightings a while back. There is an old place where they took the tracks up. About 20 minutes away from me. But u can still here the train when u go up there as if it is going by.
An urban legend here in california and in denver is a ghost level to a transit system one in the area of an airport. They are usually a come on to people selling other conspiratorial publications, one guy even charged people for tours. he would get on the train with them and then tell them he would go to a special car to cue them when to look at the ghost platform.
I never saw any but I’ve heard of it. I’ve heard of a place where I use to live that if you stopped your car it would still go up the hill, on neutral. There is apparently some curse about a car that someone was killed by being push towards the railroad up the hill, since then every car that pass by can feel a push to go up hill even when in neutral and the hill is one that is of about 20 degree.
Wasn't there an urban legend about some train running through some houses that were build on an old railroad corridor?? Or was that a movie? I can't quite remember.
Okay, let's try to dissect the concept of a "phantom vehicle" -- can a mere vehicle of transport suddenly become part of supernatural phenomenon simply by existing or is it due to an event taking place on the actual vehicle? If so, what was so tragic that happened on Abe Lincoln's train? The man was assassinated in a theatre.
Stephen King has written a couple of novels about cars with "issues"; both "Christine" and "From a Buick 8" mirror the theme of this thread, but again, what would the catalyst be for such an event?
I have to agree with SatansBride because I was from around that area for many yrs and took the train into NYC a few times and I know actually where she mean't about the one near her
Such an attraction must produce tourist dollars. To thrill seekers. One spot has cars lining up, they even give out two for one coupons for a local diner, So what ever happens keeps people coming to witness it. Good ghost in my book.
Good ghosts or good marketing? If the legend is made to be believed, does that make it true?
I would go out to see it just for the coupon... I like a burger after a good mystery encounter.
about 25 years ago I was run off the highway. Myself and 2 other cars chased after the car that ran me of the road. We could not find that car like it vanished
i live not too far from satans bride and i know of the place she is reffering to and its tru ...you can hear it as if its still passing through
I have heard of many rumors regarding Phantom Vehicles and yes I have actually seen an incident like this. It was where I once lived a few years back and I have never forgotten it.
you may not be seeing the soul on the vehicle but the soul of the people inside reanacting how they died.
I've heard of this, I've also heard theories that there are certain "types" of ghost hauntings. Mainly:
Ones where spirits return and interact. (Ghosts coming and doing things with people, appearing in different places, interacting with their current surroundings)
and ones where it is almost recordings of things, memories or moments in time. (the same sightings appearing in the same places over and over again, trains going down the tracks, ghosts appearing in windows or walking up stairs)
I wonder if these theories are kind of true..
I can tell you how to become a ghost in a window. That is a fun simple one the family can do at Holloween
I can't say i am buying into the PV bit. Maybe the occasional angry tricycle or locomotive, but an actual manifestation of vehicles long gone only makes me think of Large Marge and her 18-wheeler in PeeWee's big Adventure.
I think the concept is nice and ghastly, though.
I like the variations i read about, I can also suggest now that a tired, perhaps drunk person preconditioned with such tales can be subject to a reflection in the car they are traveling insides window. a glass pane leaned between two trees on a remote road could duplicate an apparition of an on coming or passing car. or even be treated with glow in the dark paint. The phantom rabbit trick is a common used effect.
I have never seen any for myself, but i have totally heard alot of information on them and i think it would be cool to see one for myself!!!

getting back on track I think the easy 'get out' to explain why we see things without souls is to talk about that old favourite again -- 'Energy'.
If a 'ghost' can 'create' clothes to wear....why not a car etc ?
well anything is possible and I feel the same why not? I mean houses and stuff get possessed all the time or have spirits that linger in them .... so I feel unless it can be proven notto be, then it is possible ...
This is the first I have heard of it happening in other places. But I have not seen it happen with my own eyes. Still, I do believe it is very possible. Why not indeed.
I have not witnessed this yet a lot of urban myths seem to point that this is a fact, so i really cannot go further on this, untill i check more on the subject.
Maybe just maybe it is the people that died on the train that make it appear to people. I know a place in illinois call tolono that they have a ghost train there. It is always around 4 in the morning you can hear comming down the track and hear the horn but there is usually nothing there. But maybe the dead do not want people to forget about it and use their energy to make it appear or be heard.
I have never personally witnessed an event of this nature. Seems there would have to be a ghost of the deceased person making this happen.
I have never witnessed this but I would imagine more like something of like old ghost ships where enough people died on that ship or train that the sould lingered there. I have heard stories of vehicles appearing then vanashing. I am not sure but I do find this subject facinating.
Has anyone heard of James Dean's Porsche Spyder? Nicknamed, "The Little Bastard"-deamed to be a real life "Christine." The car and James soon came to an early death during a simple drive when a teen attempted to make a left hand turn in front of him causing a head on collision leaving James trapped in his beloved car soon to die of his inflicted injuries. The then known as "King of Kustomizing" George Barris gathered the remains of the Porsche after Deans fatal accident and sold the remaining functioning parts to whomever. (Doctors and racing inthusiasts alike.) Those buyers soon succomed to the same fate of James Dean. Yes, urban legend but is relevent to the subject. Opinions? Phantom or legend....I personaly believe this is not all coincidence.
I once saw a Limo in my drivers side mirror...but when the car past me...it was a four door Chevy.
Oh....Yes....
I had seen one...perhaps more, though let me talk about one very specific.....The vehicle I had seen, had tinted windows...A car disguised to be old..to fit the time...but..in fact..were visitors perhaps from the future...I had that gut instinct...May have even been myself from the future or a parallel world....Or perhaps one of my not so happy...
Spying on me....Since I am obviously a part of something secret and great, :P mostly never heard of, and unearthly...a secret sect. A time traveler, dimension hopper, reality swapping, whatever...:x he he
I was driving south on I95 and had just gone through the toll booth to go through the tunnel under the river. This was about 0030, and I saw an 18 wheeler behind me, in my right rearview mirror. It was moving a lot faster than the 40mph limit on the tunnel approach. I stayed to the left heading into the tunnel but the semi was right on my ass and pulling to the left like I was'nt there. I was driving my white jeep cherokee, which I was sure the driver must have seen me. Just at the entrance to the tunnel the semi pulled in front of me and I heard glass breaking and metal grinding against metal as it ran me off the road. I watched the side of it as it went past at high speed and entered the tunnel. It was all black, not bright black but dirty and flat black. I watched as it disappeared, and I noticed there was no license plate. I sat there and when the MD State Police came up behind me I realized I had been sitting there for awhile. I reported the incident and then continued on my way. The police never caught the 18 wheeler, nor was it spotted on I95 or anywhere else in the vicinity.
I cannot believe that what had happened was a "phantom 18 wheeler" scaring the merde out of me....but it does seem very suspicious, don't you think? This is not a work of fiction, it really happened at the Fort McHenry Tunnel, just south of Baltimore MD.
Woah. that 18 wheel story sounds intense...To be ran off the road..fuck that...
no license plate...damn..i can't even remember if the one i saw had a license or not...
hey, it ran you off the road? that's really fucking weird....and did you watch it dissapear too?? :)
tales of phantom vehicles are as old as the wheel. it's the concept that draws peoples imagination - a vehicle (be it a horse pulled coach, a phantom train, or even a phantom aircraft) is a conveiance - something to carry us from one place to another, so it would seem logical that such a thing would exist in the spirit realm to carry our soul to the afterlife / heaven / hell. thus, phantom vehicles are often believed to be harbingers of death.
most Western belief systems deem that only living creatures have spirits, and that as a vehicle is not truly alive, it cannot have a spirit - but this view is not shared by older religions. Native American Medicine men believe that everything has a spirit - even rocks and rivers. think about it though, how many ghosts appear naked? very few, most are fully clothed, but clothes are just inanimate objects, supposedly without souls.
i have never seen a phantom vehicle myself, but i know people who have, and i have seen a phantom house.
is a ghost a manifestation of an Earthbound soul? or is it the manifestation of an event? a recording of some past event which repeats itself like a video tape, only it is recorded by the Earth itself. there are magnetic fields around us all the time, is it not possible that stones or clay could contain enough iron atoms for it to retain a holographic image and sounds, and later play back under certain conditions? just an idea.
what Oceane talked about is about 20 minutes from my appartement. So it is not in a movie.
I when there to test it with my car when I was younger and brave lol.
It does it my car moved up the hill.
_At the place where I lived all my life, we had this train where kids could ride in it, it's just a small train run by a tractor, however, whenever it went by the lake, it used to tip, at the same spot, and there would be no bumps, turns, or anything in the road. Also, whenever it went over the bridge, it made it's way to the edge. I remember that I got trapped under it once by the lake and broke three of my ribs._
I found this on the net..Hope it helps you a little.

The final journey ghost is a ghost that appears as an unmanned vehicle traveling at high speeds over its' final route. The most common final journey ghosts are phantom cars, trucks, motorcycles, trains, and horse drawn carriages. These ghosts are a peculiar enigma because physical objects do not have souls. Therefore, vehicles should not have a ghost. Just because there isn't a visible apparition inside the vehicle, does not necessarily mean that there is not a ghost at the controls.
Phantom vehicles appear as real and solid objects. They emanate bright headlights and can sometimes be seen traveling several feet above the ground. Phantom vehicles seem very realistic to witnesses who believe them to be real until they suddenly vanish into thin air.
Phantom vehicles are always period vehicles; meaning that they are from a different time in history so they have a distinct appearance. There are sleek looking phantom sports cars from the 1950's and 60's, who crashed violently while speeding or drag racing, killing the driver and passengers. There are phantom black gangster cars from the 1930's and 40's, which speed recklessly down deserted back roads where gangsters used to dump their victims. In some southern parts of the USA, there are reports of phantom horse drawn carriages that bolt wildly down old dirt roads with and without phantom horses. There are even phantom steam engine locomotives that rocket through empty cornfields at the site of terrible train derailments where train tracks use to lay.
Phantom vehicles are more than just replays of a past event. They act and react to living people and other vehicles. Phantom vehicles have been known to speed directly into the path of oncoming traffic only to disappear right before impacting with another vehicle. They chase innocent pedestrians off of the road by steering straight at them. In some of these cases, the phantom vehicles are actually seen driving off of the road, crashing violently in front of shocked witnesses. The witnesses report hearing the tires squeal and the twisting sounds of metal impacting. They can see the fire and smell the smoke rolling from the accident scene. They believe that they have just witnessed an automobile accident until the phantom vehicle and the remains of the catastrophic crash disappear without explanation.
The exact reasons as to why these phantom vehicles continue to haunt their last route with this type of aggression are unknown. They appear to be reenacting the last moments of their life in the same way as other traditional ghosts. Veering toward innocent people and vehicles might be the only form of communication that these ghosts can offer. Maybe these ghosts are acting out of desperation and trying to do something different on that final route to change their awful fate.
The final journey ghost is most active on the anniversary of their crash or disaster. These hopeless ghosts are continuously traveling the same route while vigorously striving to reach an impossible destination.
I'm not really sure on how to post stuff like this when taken from the web. So if I'v made a mistake in doing so. Sorry.
I'm not sure but... my way of thinking about it I believe that the souls who died in the crash will constantly relive that moment in time and the energy level is so high and b/c they never saw it comming the contiuously relive that moment over and over again it is all they have IDK why this happens I've never experinced it before but... if I ever see one I believe that would be quite a site and something I hope I capture on film...
OH..and when in a couple posts above mine...when Karnstein said, or asked,
"is a ghost a manifestation of an Earthbound soul? or is it the manifestation of an event? a recording of some past event which repeats itself like a video tape, only it is recorded by the Earth itself. there are magnetic fields around us all the time, is it not possible that stones or clay could contain enough iron atoms for it to retain a holographic image and sounds, and later play back under certain conditions? just an idea."
That's really interesting about the magnetic field...because...electrons have a magnetic field too..and photons (light particles) some how they change their actions just by looking at them...now that's pretty strange to think about...
maybe there are machines to catch certain energies..perhaps in physics, or quantum physics..maybe we one day will understand very clearly all these phenomena...though of course we will always have some mystery...for the most part.
plus i'm also fascinated with magnetic fields...i know that they are healing and important for our survival...the NASA astronauts, have to use infrared magnetic fields..otherwise outside of the earths magnetic field, they become sick and don't heal as well...the missing element and key was the magnetic field...When I had an MRI done, i knew it wasn't coincidence that it increased my circulation, warmed me, and made me feel a lot better...extremely healing...especially in the range of 3Teslas...it's not just better image quality, but..better for your health, and earths magnetic field is depleting and weakening...plus you hear things about magnetic fields and electromagnetic fields...and then I think of things like nikola tesla, time travel, and einstein. haha.
As far as the ghost vehicles, and ghosts..who knows what magnetic fields can influence or manipulate...I know that the magnetosphere, and the magnetic field strenght varies in different regions of the earth..and the magnetosphere, is not an exact north and south pole..it's more complex from what I had learned, after my obsession with magnetic fields and energies...not to mention vibrations, frequencies and soundwaves.Hmm...
That's why I think ghost cars, or the energy of the deceased is some kind of glitch in reality..sounds to me like they are stuck and embedded...or not just in one place at one time...fading in and out...existing sporadically...maybe they feel they are in a prison, and lost within dimensions, and tormented by the fact that they have a conscious and energy.. caught in between...whether it loops..or is combinations...the energy exists...
It could be the last thing the soul was seen alive in, or the thing the person died in.
Picking up off that last comment, I would believe the ghost vehicle's manifestation would likely be due to the connection of the soul-spirit in question that has developed an attachment to the vehicle in question, and therefore, is able to make it manifest.
This is the same way ghosts manage to be viewed wearing cloths that don't have souls, nor holding objects that don't have souls.
It is the spririt that provides the catalyst to make these things appear.
So even if the ghost had not died in a car or other vehicle it could manifest one?
The most famous of phantom things are the sitings of ghost ships that will appear and disappear right in front of the ship
maybe it is the souls of the departed reminding people of what horror took place all that time ago, or maybe it's like when buildings have memories of something tragic happening *IE it was some how recorded into the stone of the building*
but I don't know if the same could happen with transport.
i've always thought that after a person passes away they can come back a a ghost or spirit but sometimes those sppirits become attached to the things that they are familiar with thus you can get a phantom vehicle and what not.
I think "phantom vehicles" are able to be seen because of residual energy rather than a lingering soul. That would make some sense, considering vehicles (as far as we know) do not have souls or spirits.
it is worth pointing out that a ghost does not appear in it's physical body - the earthly remains remain in the earth. there is no reason to believe that a spirit will have the exact same form as the body it came from. ghosts are usually seen wearing the clothes tha they either wore at the moment of death, or wore most often in life - very rarely are they wearing the clothes they were buried or cremated in.
it would seem that the form the ghost appears to take is a projection of an idea, so it is not inconcievable that the ghost might take on the form of a vehicle. in other words, we are not seeing the spirit of a car (or whatever ), but the spirit of the person who died appearing as a car.
just a theory, but as good as any other i guess.
A a child, my late paternal grandmother told a story about a 'ghost' truck full of convicts returning from fieldwork somewhere in Arkansas during the Depression... how the truck was speeding and overturned, killing all of the convicts, who were chained together. She said that on the anniversary of the accident, a person could see the truck speeding down the dirt road...that story always scared the shit outta' me. Fast-forward to the present, I'd totally laugh it off. But in retrospect, who am I to say if it wasn't real or not? The world just has too many things that can't be explained...creepy.
How does a ship, train, or even a car get the power to manifest its self? And could a house do the same thing?
I don't think a vehicle, house or any object has a soul. However I believe that our souls are so powerful, the energy that surrounds is permeates into objects. I think in cases of tragedy that the energy from the people, & the emotions involved at the time put an imprint in that passage of time. Like taking a photograph on film.
Then it re-enacts itself over and over again when the memory of the moment relives itself.
I don't honestly think its possible; just people over-using their imagination.
A ghost is generally known as an imprint of a soul; a car, train, ship, et cetera ... doesn't have a soul, therefore no ghost coukld appear.
Hmm...Maybe its not the actual vehicle manifesting itself, maybe its whoever was involved in the accident manifesting the vehicle.
That's actually an interesting thought.
Wouldn't a ghost, though, need to have a massive amount of paranormal or psychic power to do so.
Wouldn't a fatal car wreck, especially an unexpected one, be a giant shock? A really surprising way to die?
I don't know much about ghosts or spirits, but I would figure that the more peaceful the death, the less power the spirit would have.
I mean its not like someone in a car wreck is being tied to a table and tortured, but still, it's not a good way to die.
Hmm ... it's truly possible that could be a cause.
It could also be from gaining power over time or they were truly a powerful being in the living part of their existence.
Crap, pardon the account switching.
Anywho, what about a person who has commited suicide? They also might have a large amount of negative energy.
Yeah, that could acquire a bit of energy, but I don't think it would be as traumatizing. I bet it depends on the emotions of the person who kills themselves. If it was someone who killed themself out of depression, real depression, the lack of will to live, wouldn't you think it would be a relief for them?
On the other hand, if several horrible events had happened, anxiety and emotions were running high, and they just panicked and freaked out and killed themself, then I could see how that would acquire a lot of energy..Because their spirit might be confused.
It depends, really. Someones depression might carry over to the other side.
If someone was making them severly depressed they may gain power in order to get revenge on the people who caused it and others like them.
Seriously, there might vehicles controlled by ghosts, but not true ghost vehicles.
I agree that a vehicle may be able to be controled by the dead.
I'd have to think that would be the reason behind ghost trains and the like.
In the case of phantom vehicles, trains, cars, ships it is generally the energy of the souls lost that project the vehicle as well. It is the lost souls in their final state of life.
Seriously, by any stretch of the imagination I would never grasp the concept of a phamtom vehicle! Ghosts, are difficult enough to prove.
However, the Story-Makers use this idea and there are some fabulous stories about ghostly vehicles.
A soul technically can't be in a stage of life, can it, without a physical body, huh?
On that point I can not see a ghost being a part of life, its more like a copy of the person, replaying its last moments on the earth. MBK has a point, its the person making the ghost car.
It's a Hollogram my dear....basically everything that happens will make an imprint in the astral.
When some one dies tragically an imprint is left behind. What ever that soul was around or attracted to can be part of that imprint.
mystikalmoon15-
I was looking for that word but it was on the tip of my lips
Computer problem as I tried to type there.
Perhaps as people use them for transport, they become imbued with a piece of soul or human essence. On the other hand maybe it's because an accident is a traumatic event even if no one dies and it becomes imprinted on the fabric of life itself.
I saw a Phantom Boat after a severe storm on the river.
All things have an energy signature beings they are made of mass; perhaps the incidents cause the signature to be left in the area.
But how does a none living things have any kid of power to it?
I have heard of such things and I've even got my own story :)
This has nothing to do with a crash but it's definitely no "real" car.
Two friends and I were walking in a local park/greenway during summer at about 11pm. The moon was out and even though the path was tree covered you could still see good bit.
Now the way this area is set up you have to cross a wooden bridge to get on or off the path and its not very wide.
We were walking and came upto a white parked car sitting slightly off the path with 2 wheels in the mud. We didn't see anyone in the car and promptly turned around and left.
By the time we got back to my car (in total less than 500ft away) we saw the white car pull up very fast up the embankment and sit on the small mound in front of us. As we franticly scrambled to get inside my car this "phantom" began to turn it's lights on and off.
I pulled out of the parking lot and saw the "phantom car" pull out as well then it simply disappeared. We never heard the car, like a engine or anything. But we did go back the next day (in daylight) and we saw only a single line of tire tracks, not two.
Anyway scared the poo out of all of us!
Well i hear of stories of PV and as i was reading the thread i was remebering a storie my father in laew told me a bout a 18 wheeler who would pic peopl of the road and then dissapear in to the night also told a storie about about a car that has dark windows and chases cars down the dark road anyways i think it all about the energy that these cars have had threw their owners that couses the things
I live near Satan's Bride, and I know of the train that she speaks of and it's true... you can sometimes hear it passing by.
I have not encountered any, but actually do believe they are real. And, yes, I do believe that inanimate objects can have souls.
there are quite a few cases of this in my area but i have yet to experience first hand...i know it is possible
I've heard of many things in IL but never actually seen them. It would be very interesting to see if the "legends" were actually true.
We have one in scandinavia called Søvpilen (Silver arrow) It is said to transport departed souls to their final destination.
If a living human went aboard this train there was no going back, you would go to the final destination yourself.
Back in my home town there is something called cry baby bridge, every night at mid night you will here a baby's cry and then see two cars coming right at you, then the next second there gone. Its weird
There is a phantom car about 30 min from my house, it will pull out of the parking lot right in front of you. then it disappears. I have only seen it once, but always be more careful traveling that road at night now.
If there were indeed a ghost car there, there'd really need not be any need to be careful [if it were anything truly like a ghost].
And to answer the question, I don't believe in things such as a ghost vehicle. As with a 'ghost ship' it would require too much spiritual energy for a ghost to manifest or control.
In Irish Lore, there is the Death Coach, which once summoned by the harbinger of death, which is the banshee, can never return empty.
I have never heard of any other type of ghostly vehicle other than this. So that question, I can not answer.
here is a website i found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Phantom_vehicles
Try this..........

Wouldn't it be something for phantoms having a vehicle that looked just like the one Batman used. Remember that vehicle where both sides of the top went up to get in and out of when using it. I think they arfe called a Lamberginie, if I am saying and spelling it right.
James Dean's "Little Bastard" (car) is quite a spooky story. I wrote about it a looong time ago in my journal.
It's a bit like Steven Kings Christine. Whoever went into the car met a nasty ending.
& When they scraped the car & just sold parts of it, put it onto another car, freak accidents still occured.
For these 'Phantom Vehicles' to be factual, I would have to disagree with you in one area: that for things to appear as phantoms or ghosts, they would not have had to have a soul.
In that, a ghost is really a replay of a certain event in time and space. This statement accounts for a traditional ghost's perceived will of remaining in or around the same location.
fo these phantom vehicles, yes they make a decent plot for a movie but in reality?
it could be an eco of the crash or the people. it could also be that when the people died in the crash that particular time frage got stuck in a parallel universe
