I'm not sure if this has ever been asked but.....
I want to understand why humans fear vampires. I believe them to be beautiful and unique. Do you believe its because of hollywood and movies? Do you think its because they dont completly understand? Or do you have your own beliefs? If so, please share them...
I don't think people in general really are afraid of vampires. Most don't believe in the myths as I don't. And I think most people look upon modern day vampires in disbelief or shock not fear. They don't understand but not necessarily are afraid.
Why do sheep fear Wolves?? Its a predator prey thing, natural instinct
i also dont really think that people fear vampyres like they use to in the olden days..now they are looked upon as people who have mental problems and such...
people make up excuses to explain what they do not understand
People don't fear vampyres as much as they use to. The main fear of people for vampyres is that people fear what they don't understand. As the fascination grows less and less people will fear vampyres.
haha people do not fear vampires, they fear death, they simple see vampires as dealers of death, so this projects an image of fear lol. peace
I don't fear them,I would be more scared to receive a psychic attack,but not vampires,if I'm understandable.
i think its from the fact that most people think that vampires are evil beings in movies or some parents will try and drill it into their childs minds that they are so.
i am fasinated by it, i dont fear the unknown...i want to be apart of it
I don't fear vampires nor many thing, people may fear the fact that vampires might kill them or whatever. Honestly, death is not a big thing to fear, I might get nagged at for that. Everything is possible of killing other things. People fear what they do not understand. Vampires are one of those.
vampires are the unknown, and its a common fear among humans to be afraid of the unknown
they fear what they dont understand, like vampires and death
In the old days people had a tremendous fear of vampires and other creatures as well..werewolves, demons and so on. And with all the tales and superstitions that abonded about such things back then it is no wonder. They were seen as terrifying creatures to be avoided at all costs.
These days there is a lot less fear, both because people no longer believe the old tales the way they once did and because of the ways in which humans have come to be at least a bit more open and accepting of the "supernatural."
However vampires or those living a vampiric lifestyle are still viewed with a great deal of suspicion and occationally fear as well. The average person doesn't understand why anyone would want or need to drink blood, feed off of another person's energies and so on. And humans will always fear what is unknown or not understood.
Sadly the vampire community as a whole doesn't get much good publicity. Most people here about it through movies and tv and news coverage of the negative aspects of it. Even things not specifically related to the true community tend to get labled that way.
An example would be the group of teens here in Florida some years back. These kids made claims of being vampires. They met up with a girl here and convinced her to join their little "family" and run away with them. In the process they murdered her parents in cold blood.
That's the sort of press exposure the average person gets regarding vampires and those who live the lifestyle.
Is it any wonder then that those who publicly claim to be vampire would be met wtih fear or suspicion or even hostility or suspicions of mental illness?
yes... they`re afraid of what they don`t understand...
Ppl are afraid of anything that is diferent, and if it has a tendency to feed on them they just go frenzy...
Its because Simple minded poeple want to fit in with the masses .............
And its human nature to be afraid of somthing they dont know of
It's smart to have a healthy fear of something that will kill you if it wants/has to. I sure wouldn't walk up and introduce myself to a Cougar or Polar Bear.
I dont think they fear the vampires in general, its the evil alot of people fears. Alot of people, my family for example, is God fearing. Maybe this is why they find it hard to accept this lifestyle.
human fear anything that can eat them, such as bears sharks VAMPIRES, werewolfs, even dinosaurs...
Humans fear vampires because they are lower on the food chain or can be killed by vampires??? As a real human this thought has never crossed my mind. I don't believe in such things as most don't. Where is the fear in that?
Well I was speaking more hypothetically. I must say, I've never stumbled across a real vampire, and I have never once sat around fearing them. But if they did exist then that is why humans would fear them - and it would be the smart thing to do.
if they are afraid of vampyres than they are afraid of them as bringers of death.
most humans fear what they do not understand and they do not understand us
I think its partly just a natural fear of the predator, and partly not understanding. Of course, being mis-informed never helps the situation mind..
I think it is due to the mistaken belief that vampires are all somehow "evil" or "satanic."
Thank you all for answering my questions. My own belief was alot like many of your own.
I believe its in the myth lores nad legends and holly wood that people fear vampyre also because alot fear the dark due to the unknown inside it which is what is closely associated with vampyres
it is thru this fear of darkness and death
for which excuses are made oh its how they were raised its the devil or some other BS reason that they really dont want to know us
i think that most people fear vampires because they fear anything that is considered abnormal by society.
I think that most humans fear vampires because vampires are different then them and the humans just want to stay in their "confort" zone, in which they can control.
I believ that humans fear vempire because they fear what they cannot understand. You can never comprehend a different species completely, because you are not of that species. And to humans vampires aren't a different species they are a different life form, and therefore are to be feared not understood and accepted.
It is my belief that most human fears are based on there childhood traumas and things they were taught my family and friends. at very young ages we learn to fear the boogeyman and anything that has a dark side or appearance, strangers, fire, animals, whatever the case many be. What many do not understand is that any type of fear they may have can be overcome if they face it with respect and not over-confidence. Like animals and fire. If you approach your fear with a mutual respect then there is no longer anything to fear. Its a defect of our subconscience minds. Fear is just part of our nature and those who have nothing to fear usually have faced all things head on early in life.
It's in human nature to fear the unknown, darkness, woods, new people, and places... the list goes on forever. Since not many understand the true nature of vampirism (many of us include) it is something to be feared. Humans also fear differences, as shown throughout history in forms of racism, genocide, etc. Hollywood has also had an impact on these delusions by usually portraying vampires in a negative light.... I don't have too much of an opinion on this however, because I know what I am, and who I am and am not afraid to be these things. I do choose to not let certain individuals know certain things about myself, lifestyle and choices included... because of fears instilled in society.
I think we all agree that humanity, for the most part, fears what it does not understand.
I believe also that the supernatural, paranormal, what have you, forces us to focus on our own mortality. One reason vampires are such romantic figures is their immortality. How can you not fear a creature that will live forever when you know you will not?
there no need to fear vampires its just all hollywood speculation of the films and shows they make about vampires and other demons or creatures they make them seem like some kind of blood sick ravonous creatures who will kill anyone they may come across althought that isnt tru now is it...
I have a theory (a very long one) that basically has to do with "foundational power structures" having to do with what people fear most, and in my opinion it all comes back to power ala the power matrix as explained somewhat by Foucault. Representations of power, or rather somehing that has power over you, ie. in this instance a vampire, strikes fear because of the human condition to struggle against enslavement; a basic struggle against the master/slave paradigm. Death is a factor of course, but it always is, because it sets an end point for all struggles--minus metaphysical arguments. In essence, its an instinctive class struggle...if YOU say you are more powerful or can subliminate ME, than I must find a way to subliminate you first. With vampires, this happens through the use of ridicule, disbelief, pathologizing those who identify as vampires etc. Anyway, just a thought.
i think those who fear vampires do so because they don't fully understand....don't know what can happen after
well i think that our fears in this life are from things that have happened to us in our past lives (example i am afraid of open spaces and crosses) i could have been crusifed in a public area
Humans fear Vampires because when looked at from a darwinistic standpoint they are the only thing that is higher on the food chain than us. Humans are the prey, Vampires are the predators, its as simple as that
Well since people are mostly idiotic and believe what anyone from a higher standpoint says they can be easily influenced by words and actions. Humans who fear Vampires... simply do not understand. They have a fear of having their life being sucked out of them, The End as most say. They dont want to be food for n Imortal Being, also they twist things up in their mind about how evil or vicious they are, which for most is not true at all but to each their own.
they fear wht they don't understand and can't explain or what they see as diffrent and those few vampire's like my cousin who attck just too kill they fear that vampire because they know they are weaker then the night ruler's
i agree with neneka... that and the whole instict thing... people dont understand and they tend to fear things with a greater power than them..
I believe humans fear them 'cause that means that humans are not at the top of the food chain anymore.
Its something which can't be explained by science and thats something most people tend to fear, human instinct.
And actually Vampires are not beautiful creatures, remember they are the undead.
its just a normal thing. People always fear what they dont understand or dont believe. We are also hindered by books movies and myths. But that is just all part of life and something we have to deal with
What I am reading over and over...(and over again) is that "people fear what they do not understand." With all due respect, I think that explanation is simplistic and inaccurate. For example, most people do not understand the massive quantum and chaos theories that keep planet Earth spinning happily along...and yet, it is not a common fear that we will one day just bust into the cosmos like a crazy bowling ball. Jewish theology stresses the "unknowableness" of God, as did early Catholic theologists like St. Anselm, and yet modern (Christian particularly) religion softens the image into "buddy christ". These are not the same people--this world is not the same world that thought a thunder storm was the message of an angry god, technology has answered those fears to a large degree. This was Nietzsche's central point in making the famous statement that "god is dead". We fear what we are taught and programmed to fear...or what we fear through learned behavior. An example of this is a child touching a hot burner or an open flame. In the instance of vampires, it seems obvious to me that the "fear factor" has to do with institutional beliefs about good and evil. People choose what they fear.
I believe its the hollywood version that humans fear. As for real vampires I don't fear them as a human I would like to understand them. Just like with anything else in life things shouldn't get judged until all the facts are known.
probably because of movies lol vampires are always portrayed as something to fear. in all the films ive seen vampires are always the bad guys trying to kill everone or "turn" them via biting lol some one should ask the general public a few questions about vampires and see what people say.....
People tend to fear the unknown. That which is different is scary. Mainstream tends to teach to keep to your own and stay away from things that are not pretty or easy. This leads to closed mindedness and fears. If people would just spend time to get to know what someone was like instead of assuming that because they ARE something, the fears would go away and understanding would be in it's place.
I think its instincs of the food chain. and also people dont know what happens after.
I don't if people have written this already but here I go. I believe people are afraid of vampire because they are beyond peoples idea of real life. Why we are afraid of God. Its unknown, there is no way to prove they are real or not real. No way to know what powers they hold. Its human nature for people to be afraid of the unknown and the reason we're not afraid is because we understand the unknown, we gone beyond fear of them, we understand them like they are just a part of life. We don't understand everything around us but most to all us don't fear it. Its just a part of life.
Human nature fears the unknown and that which differs from the norm.
Myths and Hollywood have both made vampires to be predators who crave blood and will stop at nothing to get it, while most of the media coverage of modern vampires only covers the negative events (people murdered for blood, kidnapped for rituals, etc.).
Religion and government have also greatly reduced the spirituality of the world, so people are quick to disbelieve that someone could be 'energy deficient' in the way that vampires are; they would try to prescribe uppers or recommend getting more sleep when we know that those things aren't what we need.
Humans fear anything that represents death and the destruction of their fragile existance. The fact that vampires are immortal make it that much more loathsome and horrifying. Knowing their death is feeding something that will live on past their ebbing mortality makes them quiver and cower. Yummy...isn't it?
Actually to tell the truth we all life and DIE. We aren't immortal and not sure why people keep thing that.
The actual condition we are people who have a life energy problem. There are those who believe that our souls never get recylced and we can be reborn into a new body. This is the idea the Strigoi teach.
Yet as for fear of us, easy, what scares people the most? That which is unknown, or perhpahs, that which is known, but at the same time unknown and completly human, except the deep animalistic desire that the rest of humanity tries to push away.
A.K.A

The fear of Vampire's is limited now. Back a few (cough cough) years ago....
Vampire's were considered evil demons sent forth to suck the life out of the own vampire's family. Vampire's were thought to steal babies for their innocent blood. They weren't yet romanitised by hollywood and the obsession of them.
Vampire's, if sought at all, were immediately destroyed... even if it just happened to be some poor lady who died last week.
Rhode Island was known as little Transivania because of the outbreak of consumption which was blamed on vampires.
I think they fear us because they do not understand the nature of the vampire. They find that they can use againest us to make them feel better.
i agree, lillyrose. teh concept of the vampire, whether people believe in them or not, is very mainstream. this has undone the mystery and lack of control i gues people felt when they feared vampires.
I believe humans fear us because they do not understand. They think it is odd or even groos that some such as sanguine vampires would feed on blood. They fear that they are victims. We should not be angry over their fears, yet pity them because they lack the ability to understand.
i belive that hummans fear us becaose of silly superstition and not understandind who we trully are.
As has been said.....humans fear that which they don't understand, the unknown....
...and there is the whole predator/prey thing....
....and the belief that vampires have power over humans......I know I would be afraid of something that could so easily control me....
People fear what they dont understand but I think that in these past few years the vampyre lifestyle has gotten more understood and less feared.
I believe humans fear anything that they feel is stronger than them, or anything that can harm them. Hence the plethora of phobias we have.
Human Fears.
Alot of you say that fearing vampires is a negative, degenerate thing on the humans part. I agree that there are vampires out there who duely want respect, and fewer of you who see humans as social counterparts, other than a route of substinance and regeneration.
However, the reputation has been set.
Unfortunately for those who desire some form of openness or co-existance, the reputation is enforced by the ravagings of those who take their status (as being either a cursed being, or simply a different form of existance) for granted, and go off foolishly to inflict havoc. ... Everything bad that happens on a public level is going to be viewed on vampires as a whole. Not knowing any better, just as any sescient being can be misunderstanding, humans haven't a choice but to fear.
They don't have much telling them that the things they hear aren't true.
And so... I've only added depth to the ever typical... "...because they fear what they don't understand." quote.
humans fear vampires for the reason that they do not understand life or the way of becoming prey
they think they will die a happy death
and that vampires are only real in movies
I Totally think the Vampires are real. And tnat most humans fear the unknown, like death. We are scared of what we don't understand, so therefore, we cover it up and make it seem more worse than it is. because totally, whats the best way to get rid of something? Make it big in hollywood as an urban legend or folktale
love
zani
People fear that which they cannot understand. With that, even the simple ideals of someone, a type of person being able to feed on them, without killing them. Only shows a stronger power in a higher rank within the food chain.
As bad as it is to put it in this aspect, its the truth. Those that cannot handle the condition tend to become scared of it. They find ways to fight it, not out of anger, but out of fear.
- Sin
for those that fear us it is fear in the unknown....all my human friends treat me the same even after finding out what i am
humans are sheep- they fear that which does not confirm to their vision of the "norm"-and vampires are as alien to their way of thinking as the moon was to cavemen-and that which we do not understand...we throw rocks at in the night...lol
I have to agree with the fear of death, for some of us seem to think that is the only way they can survive.
well i dunno bout u... but death by blood draining might not be the best life prospect for most humans... and its funny some people actually like walking around in the sun... now that's one thing i definitely could never understand!
I'd say the fact of being bitten and/or killed like in movies...
no because even people that are suicidal or sexual masochists fear vamps
I believe people fear vampires because of many reasons. 1. Their religions or beliefs. 2. Stories, movies, etc.. 3. Ancient lore. 4. Their own imagination. 5. Simply what eveyone else believes.
It is simply the fear of the unknown more or less. The ones who may have encountered a vampire may not fear them for many reasons, but then again may also fear then because of the danger. Those who have never encountered just pick or choose on what they want to believe about them for they really do not know.
People fear what they don't understand or know. That being said, I don't think as many people fear vampires as you would think. Most, I believe, don't even acknowledge that they truly exist outside of the 'big screen'.
Books, movies and games have made it difficult to sort out what is real and what is a fantasty. And its natural for people fear what they don't understand.
people's tolerance has also gone up
thanks to hollywood.
and the very thought of a vampire
I agree doens't really get considered seriously by many because they don't consider vampires real at all.
Fear makes even to most fabricated things real, even if people do not beleive they continue to stomp the fears. This assures them that it isn't real. Did that make sense? Sorry if it did not.
People ALSO fear what they are "programmed" to fear. Be it "myth", real, logical, or illogical.
By the same token why would a vampire fear humans?
But that is a whole other topic.
Death (IMO) is what every creature fears the most. Regardless of it's "source".
well humans tend to fear mystery.... plus as was said before... vampires are pretty much bringers of death... and technically they are parasites!
Humans fear what they don't understand as well as anything that is a threat to them.
most people will give you the answer that humans fear what they don't understand, but that's a crock. People fear humans because they really want to be like us. In older days people thought we were immortal, but now we know thats not the case. Humans should only fear what they understand, and don't like.
But, alas, no matter how hard we try, they still want to lock us in a nut house.
i think we just don't really feel like dieing just yet. course i'd love to meet with a vampire.
I must agree with everyone on this such great points were made here in and most of them are very true..I feel it is due to the way people are brought up in todays world..So many program their children that its wrong to be this way or that..Be it vampiric or just gothic they do not give anyone a chance to be themselves only what they want people to be and if you do not fit their standards then you are an outcast regardless
Vampires are portrayed as blood sucking fiends with nothing on their minds but mayham, death and revenge. this scares the public for its classed supernatural and supernatural things have never been completely sussed out to see if its fact or fiction. this scares the humans but not all some like me have come to open our minds and believe the possibilities. i believe vampires arnt brainless killing machines so they dont bother me, i see them as friend not foe.
Humans tend to fear things they do not understand and things they can not explain. Most fears are learned and passed on.
This is quite a simple, yet complex topic. It is believed that vampires are nothing more than bloodsuckers, this is due to hollywood's gross distortion of the legends of Vladimir, the impailer. He did, in fact, decapitate his victims, drink their blood from a golden goblet, and display the heads on pikes, in front of his castle. Dracula is thought to be, by many, a mere myth and nothing more. But to make a long explination short, I will state this: Humans simply do not understand our true nature, which includes, not only the seductive attraction to blood, but our devout relationships with those donors which are close to us, as well.

I personaly think that it is a lack of knowledge. It is just like if you tell someone you are a witch they immediatly assume you are of satan. If they really researched everything they would know that druids (in my case me being druid) don't even believe in satan. It is a simple lack of knowledge and being brought up to believe that it is bad. That's just my opinion though.
What cracks me up (so to speak) is when folks make the assumption that "witches" are of "Satan" when in fact Satan has nothing to do with the actual "craft".
Satan is a Christian "diety", not a pagan or heathen.
i think that it is a little bit of everything, hollywood, not understanding, the fear of hell, but i think that it is mostly the fear of death and immortality...
But in order to "fear Hell" one would have to believe it too exists.
"Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd." -Bertrand Russell:
Fear is an inbuilt safety system from long ago ... as Nyx said if it can kill or hurt you run.....
As the race ahs evolved so many cultural changes have taken place so that fear reflex has mutated to a degree.
Many embrace a fera factor in their lives to give a stimulus that isn'tmormally there, from fairground rides to bungee jumping. The hollywood horror genre gives those that enjoy it the 'delicious' tingle of fear. Some I find don't have the intelligence to fear what they should, and are afraid of what they don't understand.
When having (rare) conversations with people on this subject it is never the fear of the 'myth' depicted in novel or film that they are afraid of, but the possiblity that there are 'real' vampires walking amongst them, the fact that sanguine or Psy are not exactly like Dracula truning into a bat and sleeping in a coffin doesn't even enter their psyche.
The attraction to the spiritual movement is the same.....its spooky or scary and how they love to tremble but will still go and sit to watch someone work.... depending then on their own intellect they will accept and learn or just mutter under their breaths and never return.
When there was less media coverage urban myth was rife and the elders of the community could twist whatever they wanted to keep conrol, inquiition witch burnings etc etc...not so easy now but the ignorance still remains.
Mind you, fear tastes good *smiles*
I think its because they're soooo beautiful, they scare humans.
I would like to put something out there for everyone, yet, this is more for those of the Condition or A.k.A Vampyres.
We have explored the possibilities of the Fears of those of normal aspect. Yet, what do we fear? I have a feeling we have more to fear then anyone of normal soul.
So, lets get away from that which has already been proven through time and time again, and time to see what makes those that are supposed to be "Fearless" Tick. I know everyone has at least one fear, now its time to show who has the integirty to be truthful.
And I will be the first to give mine.
The fear of not being accepted within the world. Of being alone and casted out for my ideals and beliefs.
Second, swimming in the Ocean. As long as I'm in a controlled area of ocean, like a bay in which I feel safe, I will be fine. Yet if I'm shoved off a boat in the middle of the ocean, then I have a problem.

People fear the unknown. From when man first managed to walk upright and began to form groups. Some were in some were out. Those that were out were feared by those that were in.
Same thing today. The only change is time. But the wheel goes around and nothing changes
fear of the unknown, fear of the dark, and predetor pray relationship
in reply to sins last post ....
ppl fear what they dont know or understand . It takes a brave individual to open their mind up and understand things from both sides of the fence ....
But as they say hate breeds hate and ignorance is bliss so there ya go.
Hence why ppl feared at one time or another feared vampires. They did'nt know or understand all there is to know and we still don't know all that's to be known but hopefully we are less ignorant now then we were then ..more understanding and open minded today as well. That though remains to be seen cause there are still a bunch of close minded hate mongering ignorant people on this planet! Its truly ashame such beauty and wealth of knowledge is so misused ...misconstrued and misunderstood .Nothing wrong with learning about new and different entities etc.
But as for me i fear little cause my minds open to lots of different things and if i fear it it is for good reason i do!
I believe humans fear vampires as a sort of weakness. I believe that humans possibly are intimidated by something so powerful, so beautiful, so incredibly strong.
It may be because of the movies, it may be because of stories from childish days.
Regardless, I share the same views as you when you say you believe vampires are beautiful.
I don't understand why people fear them. I don't think anyone does.
I think they fear them because they don't know anythng about them solidlyl. Think of it like a sniper hunting you down in your family one by one, picking you off until you are the last one or that you are being held off by a sniper on the field. That's a bit much, but still. They've no idea if they are there or not and when they show up as so, they're something completely different than you expected. Just doing thier job like the man next to you.
Humans have-are & will always be afraid of that or thoes that do not look like them. Sometimes even so that to make themself superior " " & not be afraid they make fun of other razes &/or thinsg about them.

In response to Sin.. I don't fear but I do fear some thing.. All my true fears revolve areound my daughter. I fear something bad happening to her or her growing up and not understanding her inheritted gifts... Those are my biggest fears. I am sure there are more if I sit and think about it.
Like most things.. Humans fear what they do not understand...
and if they dont understand it.. its bad, evil, ect... its been like that since the beginning.
i think it probably has somethign to do with how the movies and people have portrayed us that make us feared......
Why does everyone say vampires are beautiful? Then go on to say "I hate Hollywood Vampires" because basically thats what you referring to.
Vampires are undead, they are corpses that have been buried and left. They rise up and attack, they are by no means beautiful. If you think they are, you need a serious eye test.
Rant over.
lol, i agree completly with vampricry666
hollywood doesn't dicate what vampires are and what they aren't

The majority of people are afraid of 'monsters'- they are afraid of what they see on movies and read in books.
The majority of people are also not aware of humans living the vampiric lifesyle... just because there are thousands on this website does not mean this is not seriously underground stuff.
This is not well-known. And for the people that do know, I am not so sure they fear it as much as they think it is 'off the wall'.
