What is it that has the humans deeply afraid of us?? Is it due to the fact that we portray ourselves differently and live different lifestyles than they do?? Or is it because of "outside sourcing" such as hollywood (as previously brought up by myself, and yes i am aware of this). I'm kind of curious about this subject, due to the basic fact that i've never actually comprhended why this is. In all honesty, I believe that humans and vampires can live lives together in a nonsensical continuous battle, without having to fear one or the other. Can't people just leave out the stereotypes and get to know us, before jumping to their nonsensical bullshit judgements?
Myths
Media
and
Fear of the unknown
Thats what I think feeds the fear of Vampires and really anyone that lives differently from the "norm"
Sadly, the vast majority of the world is programmed by what they see on TV, movies, and in books. Even the majority of the goth culture doesn't understand what real vampires are. It's sad.
Ignorance plays part in most of human's fears, usualy fear what they don't know, what they don't undesrtand. Ghandi said once: violence is the fear to other's ideas, and it is true, fear is not always shown as a "run-away-reaction" feeling, it can be shown as violence, discrimination. Humans fear what is different, at least ignorant ones do.
people have tendacy to fear things that they cant comprehend
does it make us different since we don't fear what we don't comprehend?
Yes...This and many other things seperate us and them...They should fear us...
Obviously, as many other have already said, a lot of it has to do with the media. Plus, humans are afraid of things they don't know about or don't understand.
Humans tend to create a story or an image if they dont understand something or if there is something they fear. Just look at fairy tales, they got created to teach children whats good and whats not and to warn them to do bad things, cause the moral of most stories is, do something bad and you get punished.
Same with vampires and witches, to give themself peace, they told, that they dont like holy grounds, cant pass flowing water, dislike garlic and so on. There are endless examples of the fear of humans from the unknown.
Humans fear that which they do not understand. It is an age old tale of ignorance that has continued for centuries... So sad and yet so true.
humans fear us for good reson, most of us (me included) feed on human blood. an even if you all say there are mostly good vampires out there, there is always the ones that dont ask befor takin if you know what i mean
I agree with Raynne.... the fear of the unknown is really what it is and it also spawns other stupid things like hatred... I wish they would come to their senses as well but humans are lazy and it's easier to hate than it is to try to understand something..... Sad but true.
Hehehe, don't be so conceinted!
Most of the people don't fear the vampire anymore.... they don't even believe in their very existence or they just don't give a damn.
On the contrary, most of the people who is actually interested in vampirism, or better said, in the "vampiric lifestyle", just adore the FICTIONALIZATION of their vampire.... very few even have an idea about the psychic vamps (a little bit more realistic approach of the subject).
A lot of people see themselves as superior to humans, like they are "prey" and nothing more.
This general lack of respect can lead to people who take this too far ending up in the news and the papers, and then everyone decides we are nutters.
Don't you think that tolerance needs to come from both sides, instead of epecting unerstanding to be thrown at you, when a lot of us give nothing towards it.
Well said Echo!
Sometimes it's cause of the arrogance of certain vampires/''vampires'' that others fear or dislike you.
well I do not think every human fears us. Some do not beleive in our existence, others brush our existence off because they do not wish to accept it, and yet others are attracted curiously to it. Some seek out vampirism so it becomes part of their reality.
The ones who do fear obviously are judgemental and incapable of seeking out truths other then their own. Shallow and feeble minded. You cannot fear what you can understand. Once you look at fear in the eye the only possible options are to run away from it or confront it. When it comes to harnessing fears , ignorance is bliss.
Thankyou my dear.
If we stop seeing humans as different, then so will they. This is my usual point of living from a film like status.
Its a constant programming of the human mind from birth and continues till the person breaks free of chains and of the program. From birth fear of many things is implanted...
"no! no! no!" is what a child hears the most. Then of course danger warnings, flashes of what is acceptable and what is not, evil is determined and the things that are considered evil are magnified over and over agan and again to nurture the fear seed and make it grow.
All evil is grouped together, people don't even know what they are really afraid of, they will associate one thing with another/that is totally not related.
Its in the programming.
A human mind is so easily molded.
But its a beautiful thing once it is free.
Can we ever be totally free? That is subject to opinion ans state of mind.
humans fear with they can not or are not willing to try to understand. it has been that way throught history
The world is run on fear ,our goverments and leaders require it and that fear runs down hill . We are tought to be afraid from a young age but nothing is impossible and we should learn to accept tc
exectly king.. (such as death)... that's a perfect example ;-)
pplz today fear wat they dont kno. they believe that movies portray wat we are really about. if u were to take a movie and compare it to us then you wiould see some similarties but not much. like i said pplz fear wat they dont kno or wat they dont believe in.
Lilith
I think its Hollywood, the unknown and also just ignorance. But I will agree with Darkthrone, I dont really think you will find that many people that actually believe in vampires outside of the movies.. To them it is something just totally made up.
defiantley hollywood... they felt safe before they found out we could walk to he day... now they just think were out to take over the world... which would be a good idea...
I would have to say that it has to do with the outside sources such as hollywood and some books being writen.
Hollywood always feels they have to "spice it up" aka bullshit their way to make an "ok" story line that's all it is
In my experience it is not necessarily a fear, but a wariness.
Okay this is not meant insulting, but consider this. The vast majority of people do NOT believe in vampires. THey view it as a made up fairy tale. So if you tell them you are a vampire, they immediatly think you are an unstable psychotic person. SO maybe they are not afraid of the fact that you are a vampire but instead because they think you are a mental case. Just food for thought :)
I agree extaz1. The only person I know that is afraid of vampires is my sister, and she is only 8 years old. Everyone else I know grew out of that fear at about age 10. If I told people I know I was a vampire, they would ask me if I had taken my medication for today.
As said many a times, they fear what they don't know. They also don't like being a rung below us on the food chain either. If they can't control it, they fear it..
they are just afraid of what they do not know, and they are to closed minded to try to understand it, (most)
I think it is the Wizards First Rule.....people are stupid
so basically what everyone is saying is that hollywood in a round-about way is being "racist" towards our race?? i mean, it's kind of like calling an african american the "n" word... or a hispanic the "s" word, is it not?? hollywood is downgrading the vampire race so that everyone is afraid of us?
I would say that is very true. I have seen a number of movies about the subect and not one that shows us in an even neutral light. I think some of the sounds clips to the video on the home page here sum it up well.
Fear My Ass I Don't Fear Nuttin.
**Laugh's A Evil Laugh**
well, the media and movies do portray it as a scary thing. But also, people are scared of the unknown or unfamiliar so they are naturally going to be scared about it...
I'm basically only repeating what everyone else has mentioned. Myth...media.....tv....alot of books.....comics...everything that involves vampires. It makes them look "evil" and not "hip" to the cultural world of what people see as "right" in civilzation. Anything that is not normal, or is not usually seen every day is considered a taboo with them. Vampires are one of them.
i agree that it's fear of the unknown. and this fuels itself...
but then, how many of us would be like this if it weren't for the stoopid steriotypes, gradually pushing us to the fringe, us rebelling and revolting against it by becoming even more different...etc...
NOT just this vapire style but gothic in general those in that "holywood" style are simply scared of what is different especially considering we spread almost like a disease
the fear is a natural chemical reaction to things alien that the mind subconsciously tells is we have to fear for we are predators..
Yes. Well, sounds like were all saying the same thing. Fear of the unknown. More then that, most people grew up on these horror stories of vampires. The idea of them being real makes it ten times worse. Look at the romanians, they REALLY believe in vampires. In the older villages, deep in the heart of Romania, people still hang garlic on there doors....painted crosses....they stake there dead through the heart.....alot of stuff.
it's a wonder.. that's been a tradition a very long time there..
Yes it has. You can thank Dracula for it too. Actually it was around before him. You should really see the pictures they use to describe vampires....winged demons. Some are red...others are white...black...some are weird spirit sort of vampires....it's wild.
Dracula, when he died they'd started a rumor about him and his head. His head was missing, so he walks the earth at night, searching for his missing head. Many people have claimed to have seen him walking the cemeterys at night. Some also relate this to vampirism.
Did I mention there are bodyless vampires, who's head just kinda fly around using the veins from it's neck as wings, and assualt women or men in the middle of the night? Kinda cool huh....
Another good one was the big demonic looking red ones that hide inside tombs and lure people down in there so they could feed off of them, using a sugar sweet voice to lull there victims.
Are we really categorized as a race?? I think you have to be nationally accepted to be a race to most ppl .. I mean take Wicca it had to be allowed to be a religion to be considered one yet for centuries it has been practiced.. So is it really racism if we are not nationally considered a race? "Humans" fear the unknown like everyone has been saying it is not just the media because if you look at history there is mention of vampires and human fearing them. it is more breed into them then anything. And the truth you can go up to a human say you are a vampire and they will laugh but then they will be scared at night because they alive there are "real" vampires out there the thought of meeting one in person is just implausible to them. there mind tells um that it is not real but when there guard are down then they fear what shadows they don’t know.
omg spell check just made me sound strange. *believe*, *guards*, *them*
every creature fears lose of power.
if you are more powerful then me i would fear you. you would make me weak and i don't want that, so i wouldn't like you and would have to fear your existance.
In my investigations through out the web, I've seen a lot of web sites that say you must be on guard against vampire attacks.
Why is that?
Because of people that don't understand the nature of the vampire.
I don't think there's a reason to fear vampires, specially, if the vampire holds some respect for the people around him/her, and doesn't exaust them.
There's no reason to fear a conscient vampire, that will not drain 1 person only to the point of causing the person indisposition or desiese.
Echo spoke of tolerance, and I agree.
I'm not a vampire, but I believe that a peaceful coexistance is possible, if people know more about what they fear, and the vampires stop trying to make themselves feared, because becides Hollywood, that's what backfires at vampires that get out of the closet with an attitude...
People fear vampire's because of the way hollywood portray them...as evil, vicious, manic killer's...when really if you look at it...most human's are evil vicious manic killer's...
Some Vampires are calm, peaceful and non-violent...but the rest ARE killer's...it just depends on which one's you meet and when! No all vampire's are the same...and visa verse not all human's are the same!
As you already know...! But i agree with most of you....hollywood is the reason why human's fear our kind (vampires)...Stereotype's i can't stand them....they're all full of shite....that's the reason!
Personally I myself enjoy the fear of humans, I find the energy and the smell rather intoxicating. I love to watch them shrink away like a scared mouse. It really ups the predator /Victim persona.
*appears*... It is rather amusing at times to see the fearful look in their eyes even I must admit!!*vanishes slowly*
exactly.
fear of the unknown...
and also all the hollywood bullshit
Humanity's fear for the vampire is based upon a mixture of several factors.
First of all 99.9% of all humans don't even believe in vampires, for them we're just a very large bunch of freaks or worse potential psychotic killers and blood drinkers representing everything bad in the world.
It's not a secret that humanity is slowly but surely falling victim to vanity and corruption and the possibility that there might be more to vampires than just Anne Rice, maybe even a possibly wide spread, dangerous, practically unknown, dark and predatory species which could well question man's dominant stance on this planet's surface is just too much for every human instict, especially for one of it's most powerful, self preservation.
In essence when it comes to humanity's so called civil societies the modern vampire is only little more popular than in 1565 with one sole difference, unlike then we are protected by our Governments today instead of being hunted down by our own systems.
Therefor the masquerade if it actually does exist must be kept under every circumstance or we could find ourselves back in the line of fire real fast.
In theory the masquerade controls every aspect of human life, it infiltrated every major company's board, every Government and especially Hollywood to let humanity know "You want to see more wonders of digital cinema, you want to witness the ancient bloodshed between the otherkins in modern times? Go watch Underworld, it's all just fiction, everything about it is"
And with every Cent taken in the masquerade is gaining power and influence, if it actually does exist and I don't mean in the form of a popular computer game called "Vampires - The Masquerade" ;)
It was a pen and paper game before that, as well as a card game called Jyhad-- just thought I'd toss that in there. ;)
Just as the primordial man feared lightning when it struck a tree and made fire, so does man revere the vampire (hollywood) as well as say it shameful (religious-- primarily christian from my viewpoint).
god should be the only one with power, if man was given power he'd destroy, psychic vampire have power both known via Awakening-- thus making psychic and sang vampires 'evil.'
I certainly don't look evil, tohugh. :D
You don't ^^ It's all about power, while the catholic church was still in absolute control of the western world it was easy to condemn witches, vamos and any other kin, but in today's democracy it's not that easy anymore.
I wonder just hypothetically lets say a true masquerade does exist, in which degree it manipulates the vatican, whoever controls the pope controls the minds of nearly 2 billion individuals worldwide ^^
Predators and parasites of any kind produce phobic reactions in most people. Plus vampires are traditionally dead people who have risen from the grave to prey upon the living. That's always freaked people out.
Literal blood drinkers who adopt Goth lifestyles and actually drink blood samples taken from their friends conjure up all sorts of HIV phobias. I love vampire movies, books, traditions, etc. But I always feel like I should be wearing rubber gloves and a Hazmat suit whenever I'm in a crowd of literal blood drinkers! Sorry, folks! I respect your choices! But I'm paranoid whenever I get around the bodily fluids of strangers!
it is also about control
and fear of its loss
and control is about power
also it is about fear of instinct
we usually project when we fear
when one fears and needs to suppress ones instinct, a display of it around us , automatically arouses fear
like how we cant stand the things we hate about ourselves being displayed in the behaviour of another
sour grapes and not wanting to admit it
Everyone at some point in their life is afraid and fear something or someone for that matter....it's a fear of the unknown..In other cases it's just being plain rude...Some fear different, and change.
My fear is the future for my children! (Don't want then turning out 100% like me) But they are who they are, and will become what they were meant to be.
my dear, people are small-brained.they are never gping to understand us because one biig institute: CHURCH.
hmmmm...fear.....and why shouldn't they fear?
When a lion attack a antilope, her fear decide if she'll live or not, that fear protect her and give her the power to escape.
the old saying goes:
"people fear what they do not understand..."
but thats only half of it..society increases that fear...its mass hysteria about things that are suppose to be "evil"
The point is that humanity fears two kinds of vamps, the fictional stereotype hollywood created and the human wannabe's everybody has seen on various talkshows.
For the human kind we officially don't exist, there are about as many humans believing in vampires as there are people believing in the Monster of Loch Ness or the Yeti for example which is our greatest tactical advantage, ironically their ignorance is what ensures our survival.
And consider this, humanity is the most ruthless species ever to become dominant on this planet and as primitive as they are humans tend to react extreme to any new potential threat doesn't matter how unjustified their collective rage against the unknown may be.
If science was to prove our existence publically, noone can tell what would happen, many Govenments would surely promote a dialog and harmony between the race of man and the vampire species but the majority of humans would react just the same way they already did on countless occasions and that's in the form of fear, hate and eventually marauding mobs or worse.
Most humans wouln't just simply accept a coexistence with us wishing rather that the world be devided.
Just imagine how the radicals in Saudi Arabia for example would salve the " devil sent problem", in wide parts of the world there'd be blood running in the streets and history might be to repeat itself terribly I fear.
Humanity is just not ready for such a revolutionary change of perspective and honestly, I don't believe they will ever be, it's their nature.
In the current situation we are relatively safe and I see no reason why that should be changed especially when you consider the fact that neither man nor vampire would profit in any civilized way, we have a symbiotic relationship with them already and the best is that they don't even know about it, an ideal solution for the moment.
most of the reasons i could come up with have already been posted so i will just do a brief overview,
they fear vampires because they do not understand them, they think that they will just kill them straight off,
in a way this is like how some people portray others that are different e.g. gay people,
people see gay people as if they are just going to try and get with every guy they see, people see vampires as if they are going to kill every person they see.
We are strong willed and do not show fear ourselves. plus we expect to be respected for our points of veiw. plus as stated before it is fear of the unknown.
I believe that dominance and the general need to be better than others, plays a bigger part in the rejection of all things different from what society deems acceptable!
The full fact of the matter is that we should let ourselves be feared. Some fear church ('you're going to hell') and others fear state ('you're going to jail').
Even others will fear more ghastly things, and that will drive others-- not necissarily into madness per say, but drive them into forming 'hunting' parties and the like.
Others just see it for 'the fantsay it is,' and leave it at that. Nothing more.
Personally I don't really care what others think except where I work. I'm an oddball like most there, so it works out.
When a psychopath names him/herself a "vampire" and is portaryed as such in the media, the populace sees us all as that. Much like that saying, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. Nomatter how wrong it is, we are all stereotyped by the ignorance of the masses.
Humans are prone to fearing what they do not understand and cannot control. Though there are the rare few out there who are willing to learn, there are unfortunately many more who don't want to understand. I do what I can to help those that want to understand.
they are just stupid. they are scared of what they can not prove with science and what is not out in the open. not to mention it "goes against god" to many its just a made up world but tis not we exsict so get used to it
Hmmm - how many people rally come out and just TELL a mundane sort that s/he is a vampire?
It is really a delicate judgement call on our parts as to whom we divulge such personal information! ! !
There are a few things to take into consideration such as the receiving party's knowledge base and how far they are willing to expand that base should we throw a curveball into their tidy world of assumptions...
A stranger merry met at a bar just may sneak away in fear of your boastfullness, however!
Depends on your motive, I suppose...
Whatever you want to have happen,
You can make it happen.
Sometimes it's all about your APPROACH.
~.mindless.
i love the feeling of fear rushing through my body when it comes, i really like fear
i have to agree with alot of you guys, people fear what they do not understand
great topic its because they think that were not real just a figment of there imaginations that were all on some kind of halucinagen that what scares society
Society deems what is proper and what is not, and there was a great article about society. Unfortunately we are brainwashed and some of us open our eyes early and decide not to follow the "norm". Society is the one that dictates what is or isn't normal. We here as far as I can see has broken out of what society tried to bound us to. The general population fear what they don't know, nor do they care to open their eyes. There are more than one way to skin a kitty..cliche' as it may sound.
I like who/what I am and I do not and will not judge others for who/what they are or believe.
It is very simple:
People fear that which they do not understand.
fear is in the subconsous part of the brain taking control of the body
i won't say that i have no fear, that would be lying and i hate lying. i believe that some people may be afraid of vampires because of the way that they're portrayed. people see the whole cutting into others flesh for a meal wrong. i know that vampires have no problem with it, but others do, so i guess that's why. Plus, they've been portrayed as a monster for years and that's never going to change. i'm happier to see the vampire as the bad guy than the good guy, that'd be awkward. fear is power, go with what you got
My honest thought on why people are so afraid of "Vampires" is because ever since I have known about vampires. From books, movies, myths etc.
They have been portrayed as evil beings who only exist to feed off of peoples blood.
So yes things have changed a lot since those times where the stories have originated from but it is hard to change peoples views when they have been told something for thier whole life.
So True the World buys the nonsense portrayed by television and Video Games and Magazine articles...While each may have a Bit of truth they are not Completely Who and What We are its a Shame! People should be more open and not be so quick to judge! But Alas that is Society Today!
Fear can be very powerful, ether way for a violent reaction, or in search of the unknown for an answer to lose this fear
You should check out my Journal, I wrote an essay on fear.
To echo what Vanish states,
I think that people fear anything that will disrupt their image of and comfort in the world they live in. I think the majority of people will fear something rather than allow an idea to disrupt what they believe.
IMHO, It is actually fear of themselves that they are portraying... Fear that they will no longer understand who they are.
we all know that ignorance is bliss and most people must have something to make them orgasmic
POOKACHU - You made a GREAT point that fear sometimes stems from people being forced to change their own self-ideas by disrupting their tidy little assumptions.
~.mindless.
I think it's just that people fear what they don't understand. And most humans these days are to close minded to try to understand what they don't...
