Me and my therapist were just talking today about how when people are revived with technology in hospitals after they die, the majority of them say they see a white light...And they see themselves, then the light and they are compelled to drift towards it... I wonder what is after the white light? Do you think that you just spend eternity drifting towards it?
if the afterlife does exist than i believe that it is there to direct you towards the hereafter
That is said in those books "Life after life" from people who has experiences... people "technically" death who comes back to life.
I have read recently about there is not an end, but a kind of "recycling", about being interdimensional beings, but I am not so sure about it.
Even I have always been skeptical about certain things and always thought that death was the end, there are certain readings that keep interesting hypotesis like the one i mentioned before.
have you ever stared into a bright light then closed your eyes, all you see is a big white light.
I am more curious at what comes after the lights go out, where we go to.
Our eyes are just mirrors and the reflection of light as we die sends a signal to the brain that the lights are goin out, the brain is generally the last thing to shut down. I beleive that during this shutting down of our physical selves that it would be beyond the white light where the answers lie
Much of the reading i have done also talks about the white light. Different ideas about it abound.
It is a guide to the afterlife. It is a gateway to the next level. It is the waitin area before the soul is recycled. Just to name a few.
I tend to think it is the guide.
some people say they see all their relatives there, they help them across.
fyi...i started a new story....SESSIONS...in my journal.
Sahahria Edit: this is a totally inappropriate use of the forum. If you do ONE more posting with this tag I will delete the entire post. Use the My Mascara section to get reads.
As I dislike like the thought of death, intensely, I hope there is a guide or something, whether it is a white light
I hate the thought of my state of self being stuck in a box with a full awareness of who I am and where I am.

From a physiological standpoint, your eyes receive in visual information, but it is your brain that "sees" or interprets this information.
If you close your eyes, you can still visualize what you last looked at.
The brain can do amazing things... but its internal wiring short circuts when deprived of the essentials - especially oxygen.
As your oxygen levels drop and your brain shuts down.. who knows what visions it will conjure? I'm sure a white light isn't the only thing you'll see...
...what does it mean? Probably nothing. It's just your brain's last gasp at processing information and creating a response to it as it has done your entire life...
Birra:
I would like to say that what you stated was very logical. It was stated in a manner that was very understandable to me.
But it was not very reassuring.
I will readily admit I have a hard time thinking of my own death, as I have a hard time thinking there is an afterlife.
Hence the thread on Past lives.
If there is the "White Light", I am hoping that it leads to a new life.
But like you stated, what if it is only a mirage created by my brain to cope with the undeniable truth of my death?
There are several scientific theories as to why this occurs, Birra shared one of them.
Looking at it from a rather non-scientific way, you could approach it with Einstein’s theories of light and energy. There is common feeling of people who have gone into this light that they are there for a very long time. Some have long detailed memories of what occurs while in the light.
One of Einstein's theories is that as we approach the speed of light, time actually slows down. So if this is true then what is to say that in being part of this white light time does stall since the being there is just ethereal matter or energy.
Good topic.
I believe some will spend an eternity walking into the white light and the others will walk through it to what lays on the other side.
Pleasent Nightmares, Rose (Blade)
I think that some people will go towards it and finnd what they thought was there, but others will see only darkness, and either stay there, or want to "leave" and "return" to the body.
Guess we'll know when the time comes what is there and what is not.... I believe in reincarnation.
Along what Birra stated... for a long time, it was believed that the eyes held the last image seen as the person died.
I'm afraid I agree that it's a reflection from the eyes last vision, especially if you were in the hospital. Those emergency room lights could blind you. I wish it were a guide but I just don't think so. But at least it's one question we will all get the answer to eventually.
I've always thought of it as simply pure energy, which our souls are drawn to. To my beliefs, it simply sends us back to be reborn time and time again.
I believe there is an after life. But at times I think there is just nothing there for anyone. I think that in time we will all find out.
i belive there is an afterlife and the white light is there to guide us in the right direction as well.
I like what Birra has said and would like to add an option.
Perhaps it is the brain using a symbol to explain what it has no point of reference to comprehend. It would be interesting to analyze data for those who have had OBE regularily prior to a NDE to see if their experiences differed, from those who have not, due to familiarity with being seperated from the in body experience.
I can get all of your points...I've always kinda wondered if things are like sort of heaven/hell based on if you fulfill what you were meant to in life or not...Like if you did everything you were meant to and did it well then you're in a heaven of sorts, and things are still the light and feel good..And if you didn't, you plummet into complete and utter pain eternally...Not a pleasant thought....But, death will always be a mystery to everyone...No living person can really say for sure what's in store for each individual.
I think u see the white light, then everything goes into nothingness.
It is the portal to your next life. Those that have seen it when on their death bed and did not follow it still suffer. So it is good to follow it when called
BLESSED BE
Madlyn:
I am not sure if I believe any of the theories that have been presented here.
But I do like yours the best I think.
I truly would like to believe that this "White Light", will let us to our next life.
When I was younger, I saw blinding white light. Of course, I was being brought back to life in the ER. At the time, I didn't notice anything spiritual. The light faded and I could see the doctors doing surgical things. For me, I was happy that I got to see the doctors again. I was only two at the time, but I remember it very clearly.
Scientifically speaking, I read somewhere that at the moment of death, the hypoxia and a massive "dump" of neurochemicals triggers the floating and "white light" response.
Now, personally, I believe that it is a passing thourgh a portal into the ethereal, much like on Stargate.
I think it is a beacon to wherever your soul is to go. And at the end you may join with those you have lost before. I think the white light is your connection to all the pple who have left before you.
I say that you follow your own beliefs after death... If you believe that you will come back then you will, if you think of heaven or hell then you go there accordingly...
Ok, I don't know what exactly happens to us when we die, but as for the seeing the "white light" theory:
I need to do a little bit more research on this, but it has been said that when we die, there's a chemical imbalance that takes place in the brain and the "white light" is the final release of energy leaving our bodies.
TheAlmighty13:
Again, Not very reassuring, for the likes of me.
I will have to figure a way to deal with this subject better than I do. I know, that I am not the only person, with death issues.
There is a post in the past lives thread of a gentleman whose only past live experience is being in a green a room and then being born.
So that gives me hope. Maybe it is what it is exactly what it is reported to be:
A guide: To a place where you wait to be reborn.
I don't know if I believe in this white light. I know that many have seen it. but I have been near death- alot. but I have never seen no white light.
PrettyViolence:
Again, you are yet another person that is not very reassuring to me.
I think I am going to read more about the "White Light" phenomenon.
I will make a judgement base on that.
Sorry Mistresssioban~smiles~ I know there are lives that I have lived other this one. I actually have othrs who know it also. but as far as the white light I believe that is a urban myth. so believe that you will have another life, you just aren't going to get there by a beam of light.
Perhaps the hereafter is very shiny? Hospitals are using too many florescent lights? A lot of people are being reincarnated as fireflies? Or having flashbacks to previous lives as moths? Whatever religious beliefs you have, there is an explanation. I suppose it's just a bit more comforting hearing it from someone else. Me, I like to think it through on my own and come up with the amswers that make the most sense to me. Maybe one day I'll share some. For now, I suggest you sit and think for a while. It might do you some good.
I think the white light is the way to return home to your family that has already crossed over
I don't know if there is a white light or not.
I have been researching and I do believe that there is a life after this one, I think.
I have a theory about why people see a white light. I believe that you are being re-incarnated, and what you are seeing is you being born, coming out of your mother. Miscarriages are from people that were supposed to be re-incarnated, but were brought back by technology. While you're a baby, you are remembering and forgetting everything from your past life, which is why you can't talk. You can only talk once you've forgotten, and now and then you are allowed to remember. Yes, I know, sounds nutty, but it could make sense, don't you think?
I believe it is your guided to the after life. Not sure what the after life is. I was taught to believe that it heaven or hell but not sure of that any more. As for those of you that say it is just a chemical imbalance that takes place in the brain as the person is dying what about the people like Eldar. They see the white light but don't go towards it. Then they see what is happening in the room where they are being worked on from above where their bodies are. The can describe everything in the room and everything that happens in exact detail. They have never been in the room before and they are not physically alive at the time most times they are flat lined. This can not be just a chemical imbalance that takes place in the brain because if it was then they would not be able to give exact details. I believe it is the persons soul that is out of the body at the time but does not want to leave this world yet.
If you've ever been kicked in the head hard enough, you see a whole series of blinding white flashes
When I have had an anaesthetic (sp?) everything sort of closes in from the edges., leaving just a white dot
It seems its just the brains way of shutting down
theyre dreams, only some people see that, though its the most common, the brain stays active after you die, even if its only for a moment
I beleive in re-incarnation. I know I have had past lives but i never saw this white light. Soem times I have flashbacks but the light i see inside my head is blue, like blue neon tubes. I am not afraid of death and never will be, since death is part of me.
I believe that when we die, we will be a lose energy...we will be a part of the energy involving the planet...
About the light...it was the last thing the brain remembered...but, sometimes we see our lifes running in front of our eyes...
I myself belive that you get reincarnated
But
if you wish to find more imfo about that kind of thing try searching near death experiences
I knew i had read something about this somewhere ....
Death is in Tibetan Buddhism defined as 'the separation of the Most Subtle Body & Mind from the more gross aspects of the body and mind'. As this separation is a gradual process, death is not a point in time, like in Western thought, but it describes a period during which this separation occurs.
During the death process, the Tibetan traditions describe a sequence of experiences. What these will be exactly, how long they last and their exact order depends on the individual person and the death cause. Generally they are described as "visions", which appear when the experience of the various physical elements dissolves and sense awareness diminishes.
In common sequential order they are:
1. Mirage vision: vision become blurred, mirages and dark images appear, the sense of seeing dissolves.
Earth absorbs into Water: the body becomes weak and powerless, a feeling of sinking or falling.
2. Smoke vision: feeling absorbed in smoke, the sense of hearing dissolves. Feelings of pleasant, unpleasant or neutral cease.
Water absorbs into Fire: the bodily fluids dry up.
3. Fireflies: feeling surrounded by sparks or fireflies, the sense of smell dissolves. Memories of friends and enemies fade away.
Fire absorbs into Air: food and drinks are not digested anymore.
4. Butter-lamp: appearance of a dying flame, the sense of taste dissolves and the body cannot be moved anymore. No more thoughts of worldly activities or purpose etc.
Air absorbs into Consciousness: the breath ceases.
- Somewhere around here one would become "clinically dead" according to Western science -
5. White vision: appearance of a vacuum filled with white light.
6. Red vision: appearance of a vacuum filled with red light, like at dawn.
7. Black vision: appearance of darkness, slowly losing consciousness.
8. Clear light of death: appearance of an empty vacuum. Few people have a sufficiently trained awareness to experience this clearly.
As this state appears quite similar to the highly evolved state of the clear light mind of an enlightened Buddha, very advanced practitioners are able to remain in this state for weeks by the power of their meditation; clinically dead, but without decay of the body. In Tibet, many stories are told of masters who died in meditation position, and whose body would not decompose or even fall over for weeks.
Thank you Gesar,
thanks so much for taking the time to type it out. Its given me something else to think about
i know when i died all i saw was a light, a shape of a man, and myself lying on the bed
im not sure wot is beyond but i would hope its something realy nice
Gesar:
Thank You. That is very through information. I am researching this subject due to persoanl reasons.
Where might find the information that you have provided?
Mistress Sihobban...you might be interested in a few passages from "The Gnosis of The Cosmic Christ" They describe what some gnostics believe happens at the moment of death. It is in the last chapter.
My sister said that she saw the light that you mentioned. She "died" at work. Turns out that she is allergic to aspirin.
It is possible to see this light without dying. If you wish to put the time in. It's a Tibetan Yoga technique. P/m me for the book title, if interested. ~ Billy
i have seen the light my self when my nan died .i was very close to her when she died i could not get over it so i tryed to kill my self to be with her. ive seen a white mist when i died for 2 mins the doctors brout me round .
if there is a such thing as an afterlife then most ppl will str8 to it - it's the rest of us who will be in purgatori that we should worry about...
what is beyond that Light is a mystery . . . is it our next life? heaven, perhaps? i think that differs between people.
I presume this white light people keep talking about could have a scientific explanation, if we just knew how to go about studying it.
I belief is that the visual cortex and the nerve endings still retain some amount of charge which as the body dies, this energy is slowly used up and thusly the white light is what the eyes see and henceforth the brain "records" as it's last memory.
When one is revived, I believe this memory is kept and thus seen by those whom believe it to be true to be vision of the gates of heaven or whatever they wish to call it.
This is just my interpretation of what I've learned about this phenomena, I may be incorrect, however, I may be quite accurate -- I will never know for sure until it happens to me.
I believe it was the Greeks that had the belief that you lived three lives, and if you lived pure lives you went straight to the Elysian Feilds, otherwise you had to work your way there. Or just go to Hades, if you were evil/bad enough.
I hope it is the light that leads you to another plane to be reborn or to spend eternity in... There are so many ways and beliefs on this that it just depends on what one wants to believe or think...
I would hope that it is a guide to the next level or our awareness, plane, afterlife, whatever you want to call it. The thought of trying for all eternity, or whatever trying to get to it but never achieving it is disheartening.
I am of the opinion that within the white light, the soul drifts around to an extent, some what aware of what is going on upon the surface of the world and that they remain there untill the soul is recycled and sent back to the planet
I think the white light is a guide on to the next realm.
I see the light as sort of porch light for the entrance to another plane. We would never be able to find the door way in the dark so they leave the light on for us.
It could be the entrance to heaven. This is probably unlikely though since most people see it and I doubt they are all devout Christians. It could just be a blinder while you are traveling to the afterlife (whether it be heaven or hell).
if we go on the premise that it is a gateway to the heaven why would only christians be allowed in?
I still think it is a chemical reaction to the brain shutting down.
have there been anyone besides christens who have seen the light? or is it just that group of ppl that see it?
theres a definiate protective white light around us all,all the time..and itll be there 2 guide u in transition 2 outher side nicely,w/out fear
Without any question, my opinion...a well performed trick produced by our brain...
Lots of people see the "white light"...millions dont...
Stare 30 sec. to a white light...then close your eyes...
What do you see?
Paradise, or the last image your brain received?
I think after the white light you enter whatever you believe comes when you die.
I have seen the White Light.
I have seen the faces of my family members who have passed away before me.
It was a warm, inviting feeling that was hard to resist.
I knew I couldn't go down this path and leave my family.
I would have, but chose not too.
i dont think its just christians that see the white light ... i think it is how open minded you are in the belief of the afterlife
working in a hospital i've seen many people die and come back. some have seen the "white light" i had one though who saw a place that he felt was hell. he admitted doing some really bad things growing up. what he said was that he was being dragged into a dark tunnel he was going by to fast to make out the tunnel clearly.
i had a little old lady in a nursing home that i took care of she was one of the only patients that i had that still had her senses. one night she kept asking us to pick up the staff that the angel had left at the foot of the bed because she needed it. of course there was nothing at the foot of her bed. but her other 3 roommates who basically were turn, water, feeds. were staring intently at her. these people who for the most part were just waiting to die (basically one step away from being comatos) just kept staring at her. she kept insisting that she needed the staff. that night she died. after she had died the other 3 went back to their normal life. makes you think.
well i will add 1 thing i have virtually died from a drug overdose and they had to inject me with some kinda shit and shock me so i would come out of, and 1 thing i will say is that i never saw any kind of light everything was completely black, then i woke up
drifting into a white light for all eternity is a possibility but I think that after death is just... oblivian
i have been knocked out a time or two so maybe i can add to this dicsussion...your eyes cant focus because of your pupils let everything in without direction from your brain...therefor all you would see is a light
Actually I dont think there is a bright light at all...
I think its a side effect of being unconceious not like sleeping.... but like really....
I'm not sure i believe in the whole white light theary, i believe there is another life after this wether its another life or just bein in another plain, but seein a white light im not so sure about that.
Raziel, I know what you are talking about. hence my thoughts on the white light.
I have never seen a white and I know that I have been at deaths door more than my fair share. I have never seen the white I can only come up with the fact that either it doesn't exist, or that even though I have been clinical dead a few times the chemical reaction that causes the white light sensation never happened.
i was always told that when you pass through the white light it is used to purify you that way you can pass into the afterlife cleansed of all the earthy filth and stuff...although i have never beleived this it is what was told to me growing up...and in a way it kinda makes sense because a perfect white light like that can be used to cleanse the soul i guess...but i dont beleive it...but of course there is no telling what is on the other side of that "light" until the day you pass through it...if you do get to pass through it...but me i have a dark feeling that i wont be seeing that light...
i have seen the light that you are talking about i have enter it and came back from it it is a warm nice place to be but i love life more
I think the white light could be simply nothingness, and quite literally shown to those about to die.....
i couldn't even think except it is the soul leaving the body and passing into another plane or ini my religion returning to the earth.
Some ancient cultures (such as the ancient Celts & the Egyptians) used the moth to symbolize the Soul.
Moths are drawn to light, thus, perhaps a form of "cultural memory".
But,in nature things move in cycles-the seasons, planets & moons revolving around their sun, phases of the moon, etc.
Why not the Soul?
Not a new concept,by any means,but logical,practical &,in it's way,comforting.
The bright light is,indeed, there to guide us. We,like moths, are drawn to it.
But,it guides us back to here,to continue our lesson.
Yes that tends to happen as your brain shuts down and starts to die.
My mom died twice when i was six, she saw a light, and a dark hallway. She walked through the light, and was standing in a river of gold water, She says the only reson that she came back was she saw my brother, and i cryen saying we couldn't play in the watter with her. I think it was the drugs
Being that I have nevor died or almost died, I really know about the white light. Some say that its realatives that they see others say they see the pearly gates, or angels. Although I do believe there is somthing past our own lives. Due to to being visited by loved ones who have past on.
A friend of mine who nearly died from an asprin overdose saw light blue shapes moving about in a white light. She saw this three times, it was when her asprin levels were at twenty-nine [thirty is toxic and can cause death], and she saw it only when she passed out. She says that she felt calm, like nothing would ever hurt her and that there was never anything but a peaceful murmer.
I hate white lights unless there on a car even then I have a little tent of blue to them
the light light pureifice the soul and allows it to pass on into the after life
theres no telling what comes after the light that will be told in the end.
I guess we will never know until our time comes. I don't believe there is a white light that is metaphysical, but then I think it would depend on what you have be taught and what your religious faith is.
To each their own perspective.
Well from what i have heard is that there is white light and that you may see your loved ones therre to guide you to the after life. Form there Im not sure where you go I guess it depends on how you live your life and what is there after you die. Religion has its own opinions and faith his its own as well. But I have seen and felt loved ones who still roam this earth in the after life.
I think that the whight light is there to direct you to what ever there may be after you die
And if you didn't see the light would you be stuck drifting in darkness for eternity?
You never know until your dead
Although the people that are revived might just be saying that because they actually saw nothing and remember nothing but want to be able to tell a story from it.
i personally believe that after you die, your spirit may roam anywhere it pleases. if your spirit sees a society that it likes, it joines it, which is the process of giving birth.
VampiraDracul, I think that more than likely your friend was having hallucinations caused by the asprin. Taken in a high enough dose, it will cause this. I did the samething as your friend, although I never went to the hospital! I saw all kinds of crazy things & it was the worst pain I have ever known! I remember some parts of it very well, & some parts of that day I have no memory of. According to everything I have ever read tho, suicide will automatically send you to hell. For your friend to see something good & feel great, I think it was just hallucinations & the effects of asprin! Possibly as she was passing out & being very out of it, maybe she was looking at the bright lights in the hospital. I don't know I think that maybe we just turn into a mist like energy & somewhat float, beyond that I don't really know. Maybe that becomes our new world.
MistressSiobhan, you may like to take a look at this site! It is very interesting, or at least I think so! It shows were people were thought to have had past lives! They did some testing. It shows were people have birth defects & birth marks were they had injuries in there previous lives!
ooops sorry forgot to add the link...
http://www.near-death.com/experiences/reincarnation01.html
I personnaly feel this has alot to do with the Crown Chakra.it is associated with the color white, this seventh chakra we use as a tool to communicate with our spiritual nature. It is through this vortice that our life force is dispersed from us,so it would stand to reason if our life force were returning to us we would see the white light of this chakra.
Never had this happen to me myself but I've heard that people see realatives and angels, pearly gates. People say that they dont fear death after this. I would imagine that it would be a great experience.
