I dont practice magic but im fascinated by it. I know many ppl here on this site do practice and i was wondering:

The magic ive read about is something like "will that you will be protected today and you will be" If nothing happens to you that day, then your spell worked? Has anyone that practices magic had direct results that they could see and that couldnt be explained by a coincidence?

Everyone has that at one point or another. It can either be explained either as synchronicity or something entirely different.

GentlemanVamp,

This is an extremely difficult one to give you a straight answer to.

For myself, I'm currently utilising a system which determines that I must totally forget the intention of the magick which I was attempting to work, leaving me with little opportunity to recognise or measure it's success.

Though, what I have begun to notice, is the placement and seemingly random organisation of various items.

For example, file folders on my PC gather seemingly disassociated images and documents, audio files, etc.

Then, after a few weeks or even months, I'll find this forgotten folder (named 'New Folder (6)' or similar), which contains a mosaic of information, which my concious mind then reassembles into a meaning, a psychological imprint captured over a certain period of time, which then allows me to re-evaluate what that whole concept means to me.

Not a great explanation, but say I collect a few songs, a few pictures of a person, some e-books and a few oddly named stock images.

Putting them all together in one place and accepting them all in one moment, might describe some greater sum of meaning towards that person, dependant upon the focus of the information- positive or negative or mixed...

I focus healing energies every day. As a 3rd level Reiki master and a massage therapist I get some pretty amazing results. There is a definate heat that comes from my hands while I am working. This gets commented on regularly. On a daily basis I help guide people to remove pain that they have lived with for years. Yes, I see working magic.

Ah Sabastion,

I am most impressed and totally appreciate the benefits of healing energy.

But, would you consider that to be Magick or 'Psionics'?

Just curious as to your stance on it.

When I lived in Texas, my circle performed a healing ritual for a young girl. She was in a car accident where the vehicle flipped 9 times, ejecting her from it. She was in a coma for a week and kept unconscious for 3 day. We did this ritual after her mother received news that she might not make it through, and if she did, she would never walk or speak again. The very next morning, after this ritual was done, this young girl got out of bed, walk to the door of her room, and verbally asked for a glass of water. I think that is a definant sign that results are possible with magic.

I will explain...

Going into this ritual, Magic was on our minds. This is what we did, end of story. If anyone has a good memory here, they know I have stated that I am an Atheist now. You are right, I do believe that Magic is in the mind of the user, and they are perhaps using something available to everyone. Psychic healing energy, I think this is what you called it? Is Magic something that has to be defined, if it is defined by the user?

Forgot a few thought...

Yes, the results can be the same using different processes. This IS why I don't consider myself Pagan anymore. I found that you don't need Gods/Goddesses, herbs, candles, etc. for it to work. The same can be done with one word, and I know this, that can be done with a hour of dancing around a circle.

I think the principles in channeling energy and working magic are the same. With magic youre using tools and equipment, channeling youre either asking spirit or sucking in the energy yourself. You're affecting whatever it is your affecting using the same spiritual forces..In a different way

Ah, I see your reasoning!

But surely, if one wishes to teach, a clearly defined set of rules is required?

Sort of as in the 'traditions', as it were?

If we all make up our own systems, how are we to find the common language with which to translate them to others?

"You say 'tomayto', I say 'tomatoe'..."

In the end, it's still what it is, but try telling a child to pick it up.

*is going to bed now*

see you later...

:)

Magik can be explained as the supernatural (beyond what is natural)manitpulation of energy, objects and or people to obtain a desired effect.

I my self practice no "organised" form of magik, rather a free willed form. That is to say a number of abilities useing encantations and the ocassional object e.g candle, stone ect.

I also use various abilities/gifts that some may call magic however they are simply an ability I have.

Magic is hard to decifer from concidence. Magick takes time to manifest. Unless its a very well cast and powerful working, it can take a few days to months for a spell to manifest. At least this is my experience.

Stabb, I think that it would be defined more as psionic energy manipulation. While I do have a ritual that I use to focus and ground myself, I don't do it with the intentention of spell casting. I don't light candles, chant, or quote bad poetry from books. I do, however, know that the free flowing universal energy that I use in my practice is also that same energy that is being tapped by witches, priests, and other magi.
I find that by simple meditation and clear focus I usually get the results that I seek. I will also be the first to admit that I have never been able to forcast the winning lottery numbers. And its not for lack of trying, although I usually blame that on all the other people influencing the outcome. :)
Assisted healing, I'm pretty good.
Fortelling the furture.. not so good.

Sabastion,

Can you manipulate something that does not exist to you? What I mean by this is is it possible to work with something that you don't know of--have no concept of? And, if you get results without this knowledge, what were you using then?

I would have no way of knowing. I am very aware of what my intent is and what I am attempting to do. If I have someone who has an injured muscle, I know what I want that muscle to do as a therapist. However, I don't cause the healing to occur. I am simply encouraging the body to heal itself. If there is another problem and the body fixes it while I am encouraging it to heal, then that's a bonus. I've had clients who have reported other minor afflictions (poor digestion, insomnia, ect) clear up after a treatment.

Without a doubt, this is what I do too. I keep it simple. I decribed before, a healing ritual. It had results. I can honestly say that I did not have the knowledge I do now. I know I was repeating words, created by someone else in the circle that had a specific sorce. However, I don't do that. I did not do that. I know I blindly read these words, but in the back of my mind I said, "Heal." Is it arrogent of me to think that my message of a simple "heal" was what did the trick, and not all the channeling and prancing about?

•  REPLY  •

I absolutely think it was the fact you had the intent to influence healing, not the words you spoke, although that may have helped you to focus your thoughts and energy to have a positive effect. The body wants to heal. Sometimes we just need to give it a little boost to remind it how.

I have been studying and performing spells nearly 10 years now and the most common are for healing and protection.
These are also the ones that I believe have been the most successful. I believe this is because they directly affect health.
The ritual involved in spell casting differs so greatly from person to person that it cannot truly be required, in my opinion.
I believe it is more for the practitioner to be able to better direct their mind and energy.
Anyway, I believe it is all mental energy being used to aid and manipulate other energy.

"Whilst both entail 'will', they are acheived differently"
this is the point I have long made
one is called psy..the other magic....
I hold they are the very same thing....the only defining difference is that some people require the acts of ritualization to focus their minds and will enough to mold and contain the power for use in their intentions.....while some are simply people who have a strong enough mental focus, a singularity of will, so to speak

I agree with Daermon. The energy used is the same for either psi or magik. It is what the individual needs to focus that energy whether it be rituals or merely the clearing and meditating of ones mind. Both require focus...one relies on outside sources to focus, the other relies on inner sources. But the energy and the outcome are basically the same.

Well im gonna play devils advocate here for a lil bit...

Stirgocia and Sebastion, how do you know that your patients or that girl werent gonna get better anyway? I mean, with the girl in the car accident, how do you know she wasnt gonna wake up that day anyway? whether you performed the spell or not? and Sebastion, with your patients, how do you know that you didnt plant some sort of placebo effect into their heads so they indeed think they do feel better?

In all the answers ive seen, its just concentrating energy and meditation. How do you know that your not duping yourself into thinking something is working through that very same meditation?

How do you know YOU are the one that caused a particular event to happen?

I have seen them work I have seen people heald and I have seen people get the things that they need etc. I have also see the dark side of it which we call bad medicine which I guess would be the same as black magic. Dont meen to offend if thats not what ts called but thats what we call it. We pray meditate and do sweats and natural medicines to to cleans and heal ourselves and others.

Even if it is only through suggestion that these people make themselves feel better, then I have no problem with that. The outcome is the same. As I've said, I don't do the healing. I'm encouraging the body to heal itself. There are things, as a therapist, that I know I am doing through direct contact with my client. If I help someone regain normal range of motion with 'normal' massage therapy, I'm good with that.
If I have a client who needs to hold onto an injury for whatever reason, then I won't be able to help that person until they are ready to heal. What I mean by needs to hold on to an injury is that sometimes a person allows the injury to become their identifier. They need that to feel different or special. The mind holds a lot of power over the body.

Also, you asked how I know I caused a particular event to happen? The results are, for the most part, immediate. The client can feel the difference when they climb off my table. Secondary effects, like improving digestion or insomnia, take a little more time to notice for obvious reasons.

Sabastion,

Very intriguing methodology.

And I would see this as something akin to the same reasoning of those who 'pray' for anothers wellbeing, perhaps with a different focus, but essentially, the belief that it is helping may be the driving factor of success.

But from what you say, I would more likely call this a psionic healing, since I view magick as a non-immediate effect.

As in, with magick, the ritual which we undertake, causes an influence over our actions in reality and subsequently, affect events which contribute towards the goal. But this takes time to manifest through the non-concious acheivement of the desire.

Perhaps the difference might then be said to be psionics=concious will and magick=non-concious will?

•  REPLY  •

20:08:19 Oct 12 2006

Why is magick a non-immediate effect?
Granted, the larger the scope of the spell the longer it may take (example: changing the weather) but for minor spells, something that is going to effect only the immidate area, such as a healing spell, why should it take longer to come into effect? Perhaps its my impatience with traditional spellcasting that causes me to bypass the ritual and go straight to the results.

Ah, I see where I misled you...

What I ought to have said, was that Magick takes a period of time relative to proximity, opportunity and degree of seperation.

Whereas psionics, in theory, can reach any point in space/time through an immediate manifestation.

I suppose I'm taking magick to be something more practical, in that I don't see too much mysticism in it, but find that it gets results through action, rather than inaction.

I'm not really making myself as clear as I'd like...

May I ask if you were in the same room at the time please?

Not only am I in the same room at the same time, but I am in direct (skin to skin) contact. I am a massage therapist. I'm physically working the body at the same time as I am working the metaphysical aspects. Quite often, depending on my client's beliefs, I won't even mention the energy work that's taking place. For those people, I simply have skilled hands and a detailed knowledge of anatomy. The results are the same if they want to be helped.

I see.

And this is not what I've always read was 'magick', in a traditional sense.

I suppose the interperetation is down to the individual, but for me, this is psionic healing.

The term I've seen most often, is psychic surgery.

Although, that is more along the lines of using ones own for removing detrimental energy from the being, rather than reforming the existing and investing additional.

I guess it comes down to how we have been taught in different methods and terminology.

I think that for me, the magick aspect is more of a religious practice similiar to the rites and rituals of any religion. I do use more traditional means when communing with the Divine powers that be. I'm not one for casting personal spells, but more for giving acknowledgements to the Divine and hopefully gain personal peace and perhaps an epiphany or two.

A quick note on psychic surgery. I don't believe in this. I think psychic surgery is more slight of hand and dupping people into thinking you are actually reaching in and removing tumors and other diseased organs. Again, the big differance is the client is doing the healing. not me. I'm just giving the body a little boost and reminding it that it should do what comes naturally. If you break a bone, go see a doctor to have it set. Afterwards come see me and we will work on healing it back to normal with less pain and faster results.

Magic has many forms as many of the posters here have stated. It is in my beliefs, part of our natural state of being. It is something we do daily even when we do not realize we are doing it.

A simple word of hello, or a smile can create a catastrophic event in the person receiving it…consciously or subconsciously.

Prayers, spells spoken with intent for a person can do the same.

Touch, blood, herbs can also do this.

All are forms of magic, part of what we are and still do not have language to fully explore or science to understand.

Someone asked how do you know that you influenced the event- the point is we never truly know, we feel. Does it matter in the long run whether something by placebo effect or science? I do not think so. It is the result that matters most. Intent, what we do that defines to us if we view it as magic or not.

There a many medical doctors that I have known that I would consider workers of magic. They take a formalized approach in doing their magic called science, but are not the results sometimes miraculous especially when science says the results achieved are unfounded?

What about people who seem to know just what to say- to help or move shift another’s perception. Does this not lead to life changing events and possibilities for the recipient?

Vague I know, but we are and always will be magical beings. Just living grants us this.

Liebe,

Blessed Be and Damn well said!

Magik surrounds and infuses us every day and little is it seen or appreciated.

Stand in the wood and listen to the trees make music, that is magik.

Watch the sun rise and fall, is that not Magik?

Watch a child being born, or the spirit passing on after a fullfilled life, they are equily magikal....

Life IS magik, and Magik IS life, there is no dividing line.

Look across a crowded room into your lovers eyes for the first time, that spark, that burning fire, that is magik.

depending on what uses you are thus using your magic for depends upon the results. ive always been just a weather worker, and a healer and have had results. once again ones will is usually what may decide what you wish of the use of the magic.

i know i am setting fire here with this comment, but my belief has always been that magic or majik, is 50% imagination (or pychic power) and 50% belief (again, what you believe work better than what some other person think your power base is). I don't know what will happen it just a thought.

I have done magic, if i need to take a bad habit away I do it when the moon is waning. To bring something to me under the waxing. But magic you must have good intentions and excellent concentration. results if not come forth within 30 days the spell is lost. magic is not a big thing with me anymore.

i just got into it recently but i've noticed that tempature control is one of the easiest, on a personal basis at least. and to have an example of it, i once froze my hand to the point that steam was rising off of it in the middle of summer.
also making items out of energy (spiritual items, not like Full Metal Alchemist where he summons spears from the earth) i mean like making weapons of pure light... once more example... i made a bow and arrows out of light... accidently shot my friend... he felt it to... which really scared me the first time i did it.

I think that psy energy manipulation and magic are very similar. With psy you are channeling the energy within yourself, with magic you are doing that in addition to channeling energy from other people, nature, and what ever objects you use to aid you in focusing.
Belief does factor into it. Beleif factors into everything one does. For instance: if you believe that you are going to fail a test, most likely you will. If you believe that certain things will make you sick, they will. This is independent of "reality."

I practice necromancy and have seen spirits that i have called by "magic".
I think it all depends on what typ of magic you use asto what you can see and don't if you are using a spell to improve your life the results maynot be all at once it could start with something as simple as projecting posative energy at getting at new job.wich would the allow you to get more money and soforth

Magick, such an extremely wide topic,
seen in many ways, and used for many purposes, a tool, a weapon, double edged sword , seen in many cultures as something pedestrian, and to others a taboo,

To me magick is everything, it can be worked with one's thoughts, by reaching a high level of consciousness , and being aware of the energies surrounding thee,

Magick is something that changes from person to person, from religion to religion,
magick is within as well as without.

i have practiced magick for quite awhile although i have given it up recently, and the reason i did so was i didnt know if it was giving me any kind of results good or bad, there may have been many reasons as to why it didnt work for me, or maybe it did and it was such a subtl of a change that it went unnoticed

but has anyone ever had noticable proven evidence that a magick spell they used had a desireable result, or how can you find out if there was a result or outcome? sorry to get off topic but it seems to be relevent to the thread

In our house candle magick is what we do. Yes some think that there is no direct result of the candle itself, but more of a focusing point for your energies. From where I believe all magick comes from.

But we've seen the results directly from the spells we have done.

I've been Wiccan and practicing magic nearly 10 years now. I do spells with candles, fire, stones and rhyme, though now mine are more of focused will. I believe magic is a combination of psychic will power, belief and the forces of the universe coming together. Sometimes it works and sometimes the answer is no. I accept this as a part of my beliefs. Some spells especially protection and healing I do believe have given immediate results. But then I don't go poking into it since I'd prefer not to undo the positive results.
In the end, I believe magic to be what each person believes it to be for it is controlled by their will and intention. To embrace it and use it takes acceptance while refusing to accept it's existance blocks it, to my way of thinking.

First understand, working spells and doing rituals. Calling upon the elements and such. Magick doesnt happen over night. It goes in phases. Nothing is ever instant. There are very powerful Witches out there along w/other ritual/spell making religions. No magick should be laughed at or presumed it's evil.

Jakyna, I'm not so sure that what your talking about isn't actually my own beliefs on the nature of magic, believe in it strong enough and it will work, that sounds exactly like magic to me, for i feel that magic has more to do with psychic expenditures of energy than any outside force

Anyhoooow I to mostly energy workings today, with some spells now and then most work prity well anyways. But basically I think magic doesn't want to be known to all then everybody would win the lottery so I figure you can do suddel things with magic and sher believing.

I suppose that depends on how far you can take the idea of coincidence . As was mentioned before by another , a spell should be done and forgotten because any negative thoughts or questions take power from the original spell .
I believe I have done spells in the past that have no exact explanation to why it happened other than the spell .

I use magic every day and practice it every day. To give a indepth explination is hard because one person can cast a spell and have something happen and then the next person casts the same spell and a differnt experience can happen. It all depends upon the person and the intent.

I believe in a persons will more than magic. I grew up in that kind of enviornment, with rituals and spells and black magic and white magic. I asked my neighbor if it worked like she believes then why does it not work on someone that does not believe? Magic is heavily used in the hispanic culture, and I am hispanic but I have never been affected by it one way or another.

A lot of it depends on the individual's preference in working with energy. Also it should be taken perspective that not everyone has the same sensation when that energy starts being used.

I have known some folks that could hear it, others that see it, and yet others that could only feel or sense it. I think it simply goes to say that it depends on the attunement that people have developed.

working magick is different for everyone but to use real magick like i do it takes a lot out of you because magick is used from creation, love, hate, fear and every emotion/experience you have and if you use too much energy to work magick then it could kill you.

There are no coincidences in my life. Everything happens for a reason, so does magic. Candles, Herbs, Crystals, Rocks, what have you. Science has proven that certain cobinations of things create other things, right? You have a headache, you take an asprin, you have a back ache, you soak in epsom salt baths. Everything around you is there for your use, if you don't believe that it helps, it won't. If you do, it will. It's called energy, it's called faith, the mind can introduce you to so much magic you can't see straight, unless you believe, then it's all Crystal clear.

OK I'm confused here:

I can follow the argument that says some of the things that we do today (medicine, communications etc) would have been considered magic in the old days - but, if they had been around in the old days, they wouldn't have been called magic would they ?

The problem I am having is are the good folk here all talking about the same thing ?

Is magic some sort of energy manipulation, or is it a projection of thoughts focussed by a ritual, or is it instruction some other 'being/force' to do your bidding?

yes magick works..just behave yourself..dont do it when u r angry, or sad. no vengence stuff..cuz when u look around some of your butt may be missing, if ya know what I mean..Magick can be said to be another way of praying..some of the same practices are followed by many religions..look at the catholics... incense, candles, holy water, communion..etc.

I think most of the physical magic like conjurations or something of that sort is all, as you said, a coincidence. But other forms like bodily, where you try to heal something, remember something, etc is a sort of placebo effect. If you believe it enough, it'll be so.

i study radionics...the scientific approach to analasys and understanding of reiki and qi gung, it's rather interesting what you canaccomplish with a bit of REAL research...physics isn't an incorrect model guys....just incomplete...all the work you preform during your rituals patterns your energies in certian ways, causing change to occur in the surrounding world, there's documented evidence of energy fields being altered/created, here it's pretty cool, nice to see some real research being done into the effects of energy manipulation done without utilities...know what i mean?

the human energy systems lab at the university of arizona in tuscon is also doing some rather interesting work on the science behind the art but has yet to publish thier results....all we get for now is a vague "there is definitely something occuring in the electromagnetic, x-ray and gamma ranges"
they're also doing research into the fluctuations of the energy patterns aound the bodies of mediums who are channeling otherworldly entities...(it's some good reading...) this is thier page

Magic does work. Meaning my perception of practices, Wiccan, for me or other practices of "crafts" seem to have there desired result. The problem is the most of this can be and has been explained as many reasonable beliefs. I think we can effect the supernatural and there are many ways to describe this.

I have been working magic off and on all my life.. well since i was very young. The main thing i have learned.. is spells will ALWAYS have an effect.. you may not be aware of it at the tie till a bit later you look back and its an AHA moment. Or it may be something unexpected.. and of course it could be exctally what you wanted.

a couple of examples..

I cast a spell and it was a travel spell.. I was not as careful with the wording as I should have been.. I asked that the flight go smoothly.. the time I was on the plane was perfect.. no turbalance etc. But do you have ANY clue how much can go wrong that has nothing to do witht he flight.. lol I have learned to be much more careful with my wording.

I have cronic broncitius.. I have delt with it for over 20 years.. I can tell you exctally the stages etc. I cast a healing spell and instead of the 3 months it had always taken me to get back to where I was breathing normally without any effects of the illness it took me less than a month.

so spells may not seem to have the effect you wish.. but they have an effect.
