Throughout history people have believed in death omens. Be it an inexplicable rapping at the window or 'corpse candles', lights reportedly seen travelling between a house and graveyard, foretelling of a death, the stories have persisted. Which brings me to question, is there anyone here who has experienced something that could be viewed as an omen of death?
In our family we have 'the black cat.' It's not exactly an omen because it normally doesn't appear until after the death but it is always seen when someone in or very close to the family dies. Though we do have cats, currently including two which are black, it is not one of ours. It's never seen directly, just glimpsed but the mind classifies it as a cat and the sightings have taken place in enclosed rooms as well as in brightly sunlit gardens (and once in a public library.)
Does anyone else have experience of something similar to this?
Well, anything can be made into an omen. But...my grandmother had a ring that when she put it on, people seemed to die, this happened twice, needless to say she stopped. Funny, it only seemed to cause trouble for her, my mom could wear it without incident. Also creepy as it is, every time, and I mean every time someone is born that I know, someone I know dies. The cycle.....or just coincidence?. I am not sure.
We have the falling in 3 `s...
If one of our family passes 2 more will be sure to pass on in the next year or so ...
It has always happened that way ...
It doesn`t seem fair ..
But it`s that way ..
I would have to say that like sleen's family, death seems to happen in 3's in my family! However I have noticed that it seems all bad things happen in 3's in my family! I don't know if it's bad luck or whatever, it just seems to work that way!
The hardest period in my life, we had the deaths in threes multiplied by 12 over 2 years. It was a very intense, transformational part of my development. I found out who my friends truly were, from those that viewed these events as “excuses” in my erratic behaviour.
After that period, I stopped looking at omens and dreading, choosing instead to just live and see what is next.
On my dad's side of the family, your hair will turn white with age but right when you are about to die it suddenly turns black. I think we have a rather interesting omen. =)
Well being native some beleive that the owl is a omen of death and if one crosses your path then you will die or someone close to you will die.
I know that I lose a lot of loved ones near my birthday. (how is that for a death omen...)Hell my godfather died on my birthday. I know about the death coming in threes, but I think to dwell on death takes away form life. so I try on to dwell to much.
at my age I have seen a lot of ppl I care about die. It hurts and you grieve and then hopefully you move on.
I have to agree with PrettyViolence about hopefully getting over it and moving on.
I know also that many experience Death in 3's, I worked for years in hospitals and a nursing home and it was that way always. Yet To see the OWL is an Omen also to my family or if one of us Dream of a wedding we lose someone and then 2 will follow. I have seen alot of Death yet, I try to become stronger after wards and Live Life as full as I can.
for me it was a sudden void. No sense of feeling one way or the other about the person. My husband died and it started the night before and my stepdad died last night and it started on Wednesday night.
they always say that the scream of a banshee the night before brings death the following day
It is funny how we look to see patterns to predict our hard times where we are faced with the absence of life.
What about omens for good things? Or do some of the people here hold that death is a good thing- a moving on so to speak?
prettyviolencesbrat I have also heard the death by three's thing and that seems to run in our family.
When my daughter passed away, my friend and I were driving over a cause way in Miami, and she took a picture. When it was developed, the clouds over the bridge were in the shape of a bassinet. It was really obvious to anyone who has seen it.
As am Empathic EMT on an ambulance, I saw alot of death. We had come to a Nursing home to pick up someone and I remember watching as the room got dark, as one patient coded. As their life saving efforts weren't making a difference, I felt a brightness and a pull at me. The room got considerable brighter as she was pronounced. I had trouble breathing, never knowing what i saw. (i didn't know i was an empath at the time) It wasn't until speaking to pagan friends, did they tell me of my power and I found out what i witnessed. One said the angel of death...another the soul being taken....either way....it was a enlightening experience to say the least.
In our family, we have this strange old wive's tale that my gram and mom still believe in. Something about if a bird tries to get in the house someone will die. If the bird is successful in getting in the house multiple people will die. I've never see this happen, so I don't believe it...but whatever.
I have heard the old wives tale of the bird in the house. When my grandfather on my mother's side was about to die. he began talking to dead relatives ( his mother and his son who died in Vietnam. ). He told both of them not to leave him and that he wanted to go with them. He said it as if they were in the room. He had a series of strokes prior to doing this and his speech was limited. When he spoke to his deceased loved ones, he spoke clearly.
The deaths of friends, aquaintances, family, and in general, people surrounding me all seem to happen on or within TWO days range of the night of the full moon. All the deaths in my family have occured at night, for example, my great grandmother I was named after died at 11:26pm one night after the full moon. All the friends I have that have died, wich have been THREE have died in fires. I sometimes wish I had pyrokenisis so I could move or stop the fires so they wouldn`t die or get hurt.
People in my family always seem to get visited by the person the night they die.( out of body) I myself get wakened up abruptly at 2 or 3 am and usually someone has passed in the family. It sucks.
Close to where I live is Berry Pomeroy Castle. There is supposed to be a ghost there that, if you see her, you'll be dead by the next dawn.
Folk lore says that even if there's a group of people, only the one who is going to die will notice the ghost.
I belive that there are many forms of death omens, I studied the Mothman prophecies a few years ago after watching the film. I found it amazing just how many mothman sightings there have been, he has been here since the beginning of mankind.
In my family, when a great grandchild is born the great grandparent passes away... although it only seems to be true of the 3rd granddaughter not grandson. I thought this was something crazy that my parents were telling me until my daughter was born and my grandmother passed away and then when I looked at the family tree we have I realized how true it was.
The 3's thing in our family can also be good things come in 3's so not sure if thats necessarily an Omen for us. And besides the visit of that person the night before or visions days before a person passes...we have the black bird, the owl, and and a sudden falling of a picture where the glass breaks. And the old wives tale of the white wedding dress in a dream.
we also have the 1 death will bring 2 more, but a foretelling of a death, no. After death my family has believed in the presence of people through things....for instance my moms family~their mom loved cardinals and every time they are all together, they will 8 out of 10 times see one. They feel it is mom paying a visit. Dads side had a thing with balloons and his dead sister.....again, I believe in coincidence more than anything
Thank you all for sharing your experiences. It's interesting the number of people who have commented on the 'threes' in their family. I'd be curious to know if this is as common as this thread suggests.
mine comes to me in visions while i'm sleeping everytime someone close to me is gonna die i have a vision a week before it happens.
in my family there seems to be no omen, although both loved ones ive lost came as a result of a bout with some illness and spending time in the hospital. sadly my uncle wasnt able to make it thru a tough portion of the surgey he was going thru when he went
I also have experienced the death in threes of friends and family. One year I had 6 people die in three weeks. It started with a good friend that I almost married, then my great uncle and a counselor from my high school. That was just the first week. I thought I had finished with the deaths but during the next two weeks three more died.
Some one mentioned that people tend to die on their birthday well on my brothers birthday we tend to bury family Members. We have buried my grandfather, grandmother and an aunt all on my brothers birthday.
A Bird flying up to the window of your home is always a sure sign that the reaper is near. An Owl calling one's name is an old Native American precurser to Death. My health is not so great. On a regular basis I get little signs and reminders of the brevity of life. I try and thing of myself as a Lucky Man like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer would say. But the signs of impending doom unnerve me from time to time.
I find it very interesting that so many people have the three thing. I thought it was something in my own family but it seems that many people have the three thing either people die in three's or many people dided in three weeks etc very interesting.
I myself have inherited my gypsy tarot cards from my grandmother. I was doing a reading for one of my friends and the cards said that her sister's baby was going to die (she was pregnant at the time). It came to pass. I felt horrible about it and asked my grandmother to take them back, but apperantly it's what they do. These cards tell when someone will die. .. I personally would rather have one that tells me the upcomming lotto numbers.
I have worked in nursing homes for a while... And almost every time someone did pass on.. right before they were talking to either a wife or husband that had passed on before them.. almost as if they were telling them that it was ok...
Also it always seemed that it happened in threes and it was usually two expected and one unexpected.
Honestly this is one I see as looking for patterns to bring order to an often chaotic and frightening existence.
I have a friend - she grew up in a household where she had absolutely no say, and no friends outside the home. It was very isolating. Her coping mechanism was to make grand plans for her life after she left home. She married an individual that would pretty much let her run the macroscopic things, and has gone through and lived her life "just as she knew she would..."
Fate? No - self-fulfilling prophecy. The one part of her plan that was threatened was when she wanted to have a baby... and she went to irrational and inappropriate lengths to ensure she got pregnant "on schedule". .. and honestly the pregnancy hasn't gone "as planned" which has caused other problems...
Bottom line, we all try to impose order or some sort of reason on our lives. Some people talk about omens and fate - others form intricate plans for their lives and work to a timetable.
Like some of the others my family too revolves around the 3's.But since this is my # it's not always a bad sign. 3 siblings 3 weddings, 3 births...ironically ,July,August then September. Recently we had the 3 deaths. We sit now and wait for the next set to make its appearance......
In my family(from my mother's side, death came in 3's as well.)
One month after the other, one expected the others weren't.All on a Friday, all male, the first one on the Lady of Sorrows day.
All the women of my family including me had a weird feeling on the day they died(before we knew they died.)And seams there is some tragic story on the males of my mother's side, but that's another topic.
mmm... in my famiy... i think we don't have any omen 'cause we die suddenly... but with my friends... it happensa that they're doing very well at all, almost perfect, but suddenly u have a lil' problem, fight or accident a few days before your death...
I'm not a superstitious person but when Famous people die it dose seem to happen in threes (3s).
My Ex-Husband has a wierd re-occuring time phenomenon. Whenever he happens to look at a clock around the 10:00 hour am or pm it is 10:06 exactly. This has been happening to him for years. I used to tell him he was going to die at 10:06.
The rule of 3 seems to hold in my family as well, a good friend got killed, then my aunt died followed shortly by my father. It's happened several times like that for us. I've heard of the bird and owl omens but never known anyone that actually experienced them.
Graham John Clifton Bond, a promising and clearly talented rock musician, was born in Romford, England, on 28 October 1937. John Russell Pope (who would later changed his surname by deed poll to “Pope de Locksley”) was born in England on 11 July 1953. These two individuals came to be linked by one single factor. They were drawn at an early age to the occult, in particular a brand concocted by Aleister Crowley known as Thelema.
In the early days Bond was noted as being a silent, humble figure with a plastic alto saxophone; always on the outskirts of what was going on, never part of it. The thing about him was that he was not noticed. This would change. The versatile keyboard player and saxophonist, who also did some vocals, developed an obsession with the occult, especially the brand of Satanism devised by Crowley, known as Thelema. Like his mentor, he also became seriously addicted to drugs and alcohol. Pope owns to using hallucinogens, albeit briefly, early in life, but soon found a preference for alcohol and forms of sex magic. According to the posthumous biography The Mighty Shadow, written by Harry Shapiro, Graham Bond sexually abused his stepdaughter. Pope might claim to be Crowley’s “spiritual successor,” but Bond went one better. He claimed to be an illegitimate son of Aleister Crowley. In the world of the dark occult nothing is too sacred or taboo for exponents of Thelema.
On 8 May 1974, Graham Bond fell, or perhaps jumped, in front of the wheels of a London Underground train at Finsbury Park station, and died. In the previous year he was called in by another rock star, Long John Baldry of Muswell Hill, London, to help in an “exorcism,” as the media insisted on describing it. Baldry had been receiving threats and curses from a local self-proclaimed occultist who was a close associate of John Pope. This was confirmed to be the case in repeated boasts published in local newspapers at the time, eg front page headline story of the Hornsey Journal, 28 September 1973. Baldry had reason to believe that his missing cat Stupzi had been sacrificed by Pope's associate in a black magic ritual. Whilst not denying the ritual sacrifice of cats during this period, the associate maintained that the one he killed in Highgate Wood was not Stupzi, but a stray.
On one occasion, Baldry and Bond arrived at the associate's bed-sitting room to confront the sender of black magic threats, but only found John Pope whom his collaborator had been using to deliver the clay effigies with accompanying menacing poems.
The two rock stars still continued to receive black magic threats from Pope and his collaborating occultist. When Bond met with his unfortunate death, Pope immediately claimed that he had "killed Graham Bond" with a curse, which he confirmed in a recorded interview (now available on a CD).*
Mystery has always surrounded the untimely demise of Graham Bond and many commentators in the media have looked for simple answers, sometimes erroneously describing Bond as a “white magician.” There is nothing “white” about the magic that springs from Crowley’s Thelema. Baldry grew ever more terrified of the curses he had received and quit England for Canada, never to return.
Pope's associate issued threats to multifarious people at the culmination of which he was arrested by Scotland Yard detectives who discovered a satanic altar with black candles and an image of the Devil in his small bed-sitting room. He was held on remand until his trials at the Old Bailey in June 1974, resulting in a four years eight months prison sentence.
Pope remained free to continue with Crowlianity. Bond died a month before Pope's collaborator faced his own fate in front of a judge and jury.

i have always heard that when a dog howls for no apparent reason, someone will die. i know for a fact though that deaths do come in 3's in my family. i usually will have dreams telling me that someone is going to die a month to two months before it happens (some of my cousins have nicknamed me the banshee of the family).
I believe there are often clues around us that we do not pick up on at times. I do feel an event both positive or negative often before it happens.
Before my great gma died it came in 3's at the nursing home she resided in. As for me & my family ive never noticed any certain types of omens...
Usually before I or someone in my family loses someone close to them, we see a shadowy black figure, sometimes multiple ones. My brother and I both saw it at the same time a week before my grandfather died. There have been a few other times it’s happened as well. I saw it before I lost my grandmother. But it was just written off because of the family's history of mental illness. But I really believe that it is an omen or a sign of some sort.
I beleive that if you pass a rose bush with a single rose bud, someone close will die within a month. But if you pick it off they are safe from soon to be death. This has happened to me twice.
Although my family has no such history, I do believe in the 3's but other then that I have no experience; so I greatly enjoyed reading everyone elses posts. Some really interesting ideas out there.. and some very sad ones.
The nuber 3 has been brought a few times on this topic. I had never heard of it until I worked in nursing homes. That was my first real experience with death- and sure enough when one died- 2 more followed and both nursing homes had their own patterns. In one week 3 would pass on, the other home it would take about a month. We also had the light dimming in on of the homes when a death was occuring. Very creepy for a naive 18 year old.
This is weird, but a death omen to me, would be black dogs. Big black dogs come around and something bad always happens..to me anyways.
My grammy used to say if it rains and there are snail tracks across your door step.....watch out someones gonna get it
personally before anyone close to me dies i have really bad deja vu. yes it is common to hear of having but it seems whenever a death occurs there have usually been at least 10 cases of deja vu i have witnessed, the day before...i hate it.
We had an occurence with a distant cousin of mine that died. He had cancer and was sick for many years. The day before he died, a huge raven perched in the tree outside his window and sat there, immobile, for like three hours.
Stuff happens in 3's around my family too, could be good or bad, like death, weddings, births...
but how about this....When I dream of death at night while asleep, it usually means someone is dying right then, and many times, they come to visit me to actually say goodbye, or pass along messages....that could be an omen, it's been happening since I was a child...but I don't see it as bad, I'm honored to have them stop by, and talk to me.
I dreamt about a specific uncles dying, recently...time will tell.
i just find it amazing how people fear death until they live for what they feel is to long and then when they are about to die they kinda just give it up they have like a fear and readiness mix
In my small town there are few people who die since there are well... few people. but whenever there is a death, right before i find out i see a crow sitting on a branch in the woods. its quite odd and i don't know if its an omen since not that many people die here but the few times that someone did, i saw the crow right before i found out.
I do not know of any death omens that I have experienced. Maybe I will only see one when I die.
I've felt a sence of foreboding but it has not been so much as sence for death as it has been one of decision.
I have seen many. I've seen dark clouds in the shape of a wolf and sculls. Soon after someone had died. I don't think black cats are a death omen, but I could be wrong. I've also had dreams about deaths before they happen
My Grandma used to say if a bird came into the house and tried to leave by a window someone was going to pass. This happened about two weeks before my Dad passed away. She also said she heard him ask for someone to open the basement door, and he was nowhere near the basement at the time.A couple of days after the funeral,my brother's girlfriend received a phone call. She said it was very hard to hear the person but they said "Don't worry.Everything will be allright."She swore it was Daddy.
here inthe Phillipines there are like a hundred things that can cause you bad luck..from marriage to photos..it never ends..
in my family i have found that every time u have a green christmas or an abnormally warm fall, someone dies. This happens a lot in our whole town actually. It has been true every time an uncle, aunt, or grandparent has died, as well as friends and friends of my family.... and it usually happens in three's. Like to people that we know. It is a small town, so everyone knows everyone else....
In my family i always lose loved ones around thanksgiving and Christmas, and its like we are cursed or something, i mean i see images in my dreams of it, then the black cat starts acting strange, and my dogs start howling,
i have seen elderly people talking to relatives that are deceased. Swearing I could see them. I have also seen a elderly man reach his hand up in the air taking his last dying breath as tho someone was reaching to take him into the light
My family has the rule of threes as well. Both for good things and for bad.
I don't see the point of looking for omes though. Even knowing ahead that someone will die doesn't change the fact. Supposing you could pinpoint it - you know grandma was going to die - what would you do?
death is a strange thing. to many its an end but to others its a begining it all depends on the others
As a EMT i came into the contact with death alot. But one instance stuck with me. I was waiting in the hall of a hospice hospital and I could lean against a wall and look into a particular room with 2 women in it. I watched as i saw a shadow move in the room, so i moved so i could see the whole room, nobody there, both women in their beds. I felt a chill and then a stench that was bad enough to make me back away from the room. At that time my partner joined me, to tell me the patient we were transporting was ready. I hesitated before leaving the door. He noticed this but said nothing until later. He asked me why i hesitated at the room and i told him what i felt, saw and smelled. He smiled and told me that i met death. Sure enough one of the women died that night and I always knew from that night one, when I felt that chill and smelled that smell, I was fighting death personally.
A murder of crows usually signifies great loss in our family. This happens rarely, but when we see an unusual amount of crows gathered on the property of a loved one we know what is to come and it always comes to pass.
This makes me think of when my mother in law passed away. She looked at each person who was there and then looked up and then smiled as though someone was there to guide her to her after life.
well in actuality there is no set pattern you can go by or look to as a sign or foretelling of death. My grandmother always said"life is uncertain but death is sure." and that is true regardless of who you are.
i am not sure on how true but they say that we can smell death and that prepares us for the comming some people in the medical feild say you can smell sickness
I have known two people in my life who sensed there death was coming and made it a very calm experience. They siad they could feel it and just knew it was time.
We have had a death follow weddings, 4 times in 10 years. They were the only weedings IN the 10 years also.
AND at christmas time we have lost my gran on Xmas eve. And my grandad a year later Dec 26th- so suddenly.
And almost lost my own daughter Just before Christmas- 1999.
My mom told of a story that i truly believe now as it has come true so far ...Her father came here to amercia from germany back in the 40's. He wanted this land to build a home for my grandma and he hadda arguement with a gypsy she claimed.Well he was a stubborn man he didn't believe in the curse she said she would cast on him and it was this "That every last one of the people he held dearly to him would die at a young age if he did not give her the land."Well he declined and it all came true ....my mom&dad they were very young at death, my grandpop was 61 my grandma died 3 day's after him 56, my uncle was in 9-11 bombing at twin tower's in NYC. He was 43 and the list goes on ...i have lost so many relatives at young age's it's unreal ...so i believe it was a omen or spell call it whatever .....
I wouldnt call it an omen, but when someone close to me dies I have a strange feeling...I get it right about the time they die...than later I find out the person is dead and I dont really know how to explain that crazy feeling I get..it worries me
I have this thought on all this, no one knows there time of death ( only the Gods Know) and worrying about it is a waste of the life you have. So I spend no time on such thougts, but thats me.
i get the chill sensation when someone i am close to or family passes.....i hate it
I had an aunt with clairvoyance/precognition who swore she would "see" whoever was about to pass away just as it was happening.
One time she said she looked up and saw another aunt who lived almost 500 miles away standing there. Less than an hour later we got the call...
in my family we dont like owls. they are a sign that something bad is going to happen. one night my dad saw an owl. turns out his friend was beat to death . so we dont like owls
I had posted here before stating that the owl is a messenger of death. This is something that I had heard. Well recently a Native American medicine women told me that her people beleive that an owl is a messenger yes but not of death but of thoughts and prayers. It is beleived that it carries you prayer to the Great Spirit or you higher power.
to straighten the banshee comments:
the banshee is an irish female spirt in irish mythology. She usually is seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the under world.
Traditionally, when a citizen of an Irish village died, a woman would sing a lament at their funeral.
When these oral narratives were translated into English, a distinction between the "banshee" and other fairy folk was introduced which does not seem to exist in the stories in their original Gaelic forms.
Similarly, the funeral lament became a mournful cry or wail by which the death is announced. In these tales, hearing the banshee's wail came to predict a death in the family, and when seeing the apparition of the banshee portends one's own death.
"Banshees" are also thought to be irish fairies.
Animated Version of the Banshee's History & Tale
My old house in England, whenever something good or bad is about to happen. There is a ghost couple that is seen either laughing or holding each other in grief. They are ususally seen outside in the garden, but have been heard indoors as well.
I know of the 3 thing it happens with Celebraties and in families not sure how that is an omen but we had two deaths in Jacks family recently two babies we're waiting for the 3rd death....
I've never personally seen this but my mother said she saw a women dressed in white before her mother died the women was crying and she my mom knew her mother had passed when the women just wasnt there anymore
I think folks should be a little careful getting too carried away with this. People naturally look for symbols and then the mind gets so used to it that it starts seeing them everywhere.
You start figuring that some things are a death omen and you probably start noticing death every where not because it is a real omen but because you have conditioned your mind to look for examples of that.
my mother smells roses the day before someone in the family dies. we allways know that time has come for someone when we hear my mother say" the roses are back" then we just sit back and wait for the phone call
Im my family we have alot of 3's also,Seems very common to have that now with all the posts,We also have vivid dreams which only happen to the females and thats usually a sign of bad things to come (deaths).
A friend of mine went to school to get certified to do bio-feedback therapy. It's a holistic approach to healing. Supposedly it manipulates the energy field around a person so the body can heal itself. Anyway, she said in her school they were shown studies of different people’s energy fields. Up to a week before a person died, no matter what the cause, their energy fields showed a significant change. When people died there was also a surge of energy in the atmosphere around them and supposedly you could actually see the energy leaving the body and being absorbed by the energy surge around them.
I didn't go to the school myself so I haven't seen the tapes, but I find the whole concept fascinating.
before the time of death ,and certain calamities, accidents misfortunes and so on certain ethereal beings tend to predominate the vicinity they are there ofcourse as part of the role they play in the universe, for the most part, some independant beings also appear from time to time for parasitic and other purposes,
most omens , animal behaviour weather phenomenon, simultaenaety and so on, are brought about i have found by response to said beings and manifestions facillitated by them,
these omens i have found may occur even when there is no death to come, but when these beings appear, as when one works with them for example, or communicates /conducts commerce with them,
the very same omens will occur around persons who have close contact with said beings and are always in what can be termed half contact with them, what is said in literature about how dogs howl and crows begin to caw when so and so person passed by
observations over the centuries around death has perhaps linked them with death rather then to the beings that are actually responsible for them
these have been my observations and experiences regarding this matter
I have never had the death in 3's thing happen in MY family, but last year, three of my friends had a grandfather die, all within the same month, all on their mother's side of the family, all from heart failure... so I don't know if that counts, but I figured I'd throw that out there for you! ^^
I usually see shadows of figures....my mom also sees them as well.
In most of the deaths that have happened to those close to me I had no omens that I can recall that is, but when I was 12 my grandfather was dieing and while my parents were spending the night at the hospital, my brother and I were spending the night at our aunts and we were in the room playing with my cousin, the phone rang (which was not unusual) and I stopped playing and looked at my brother and cousin and started to cry and my brother asked me what was a matter and I told him our grandfather had just died...on the phone was my mother calling to tell my aunt...how I knew *shrugs* the best explination I can give is I just felt his spirit stop by to give me one last hug and let me know he loved me... then he was gone...
I dont think there are "omens" per se however.......I believe that Death comes for us sooner or later.....and if you want to live on so to speak then make a deal with him!
i've had dreams of people dying....and they do.. We , dont die we move on , so the departed can reach us. memnoch666
I believe in the rule of three. Where I work it happens more often than not, that if one dies two follow.
In my family home in England, there is a ghost couple who are seen before a happy occasion or a death in my family. They are mostly seen outside in the garden, but have been seen in the house.
I think my family has a strange curse every female when they turn 16 are in a life or death car accident and every male when they are 20 get into a major accident at work.
was reading the post about t hings happening in 3's , i noticed that does hapen alot at my job
