When you think of immortality, what comes to your mind? Do you automaticaly think of being one of these creatures of darkness.

Or is it merely creating a name or symbol, of yourself? Something of you that will never die, and that will be around foreever, long after you have past on.

Please feel free to enlighten me on what you think. Aaawwwooooo......

Honestly when I think of immortality I think of everything we pass on from one human being to another. Everything we pass on to our children, our friends, even strangers we may meet along the way. As long as what we have given to mankind is remembered abd reused the people we are will never die.

Many of us have intellegence here. I wasn't not sure this thread was going to stay open, but I'll hazard an answer since it hasnt closed yet seems to mean it might not...
I will have a form of immortality not like a movie monster or fictional character out of a book.
I am an artist so my work will be around long after I am, not to say I will ever be famous (not sure I even want that), but if we leave record of our being here we have a form of immortality..
Some through having children, art, poetry, ficton, non-fiction, or just the people who remember us both fondly and not so fondly....

Physical immortality, is non existent. Period.

Death takes what it wants, when it wants.

When I think of immortality..I do think of the children...the generations to come. Should anyoneknow their family history, they can recognize traits that are passed down from generation to generation. These traits make us "just like her Aunt Marie" thus making Marie immortal in say..me. Someday I hope to pass that on to someone else...my child...along with traits of me.

I also think of the things I create and the lives I touch. When someone dies, I often think...as long as I remember (or have an item of theirs), the person is not really gone.

Physical immortality isn't real. We continue on through our children. We can and will be spiritually immortal. I believe we lose this body/shell and move on.

Immortality can be taken in many different ways. I feel that people become immortal through music and literature. What they write and what they sing or play lives on forever, past their mortal body, but it cannot live past their soul, as the soul is immortal, it is eternal. The soul is immortal, but not in a sense that it always remains on earth. Art and such will be taught and read and played forever. That is my sense of immortality in a nutshell.

yes I believe it is real because everything we pass on from generation to generation keeps going so it is in a sense a type of immortality.

I think of the children and the next generation and what has been taught to them and passed down, So it is how you WANT to percieve it actually.

Eventually, and most likely soon after, even memories fade. So they are not "immortal" either" unless of course you reach fame....hell and even then, wont be forever.

Well, as has been stated already, physical immortality, of course, is nothing more than a mere fantasy.

But, when I think about meanings other than physical, I think about people like Michelangelo, Plato, Leonardo DaVinci , and the like. Though they have all passed on, their presence in history is essentially immortal. Its about the closest any living person can get to living forever.

Many have already hit upon what I wanted to say...

People are immortal through their children and children's children. Others by art, photos, the written word, what they have built, by what they have done, immortalized on the silver screen . . . in many different ways.

I think of myself as being like one of the gang and also of wanting to leave something behind to symbolize myself and what imprint I left behind for the world to see.

You see, I am misunderstood by many people which make me unforgettable in positive and negative ways. I am a vampyre. So many on here don't feel that way yet they want to be compared to them. I am unusual, important, memorable, wonderful, openminded, and I believe in love. I hope that the people i know and encounter will gain something from these qualities in what I am.

And in another sense, I have left something of me on this earth to be remembered by...my two little boys. They are flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood. That's the best way I could answer your question.

first off you have to realize that anything is possible if man puts his mind to it. just because its not a reality now doesn't mean that it will be in the future.

then you have to really think about Immortality......gift or curse.

would you really want to be immortal? out living everyone that you knew and loved. would you continue to build relationships with people knowing that some day they are going to die once again leaving you alone. or would you embrace solitude not wanting to form a bond with anyone in order to keep you from having to go through the pain of lose time and time again.

but if you were truly immortal would you tell anyone. if the government found out that you were immortal you might end up in a lab for the rest of your life.

I believe that immortality refers to the passing on of the spirit. The spirit does not die, as it is energy. It simply changes forms, shapes, etc.

immortals... believed to live forever....a truth, a lie... perhaps, we all see it in different ways, out words might be immortals, our passing through the shadows, ur very thoughts...nonoe of this dies, our souls stay forever, in sand, like marks in time.

I have no high moral prospects of leaving something behind that betters the world as a form of immortality. I have no faith in the 'immortal soul' as a means of stemming the sick and bitter taste that one gets in the mouth when thinking about death. I don't believe that 'living life to it's fullest' will in some way make me feel that in old age, my time was always well spent and worth it.

At the same time, I have little desire to see myself old and feeble and without the means to take care of myself or do as I please. I don't feel that having my friends and family around in my 'golden years' would be adequate salve for the pain of physical decay.

So while I don't want to die young, I don't want to grow old and will likely have to get used to being disappointed either way.

I disagree with some points here...and I want to comment on memories. In my opinion memories never die....they are always within us...we have seen cases of Alzheimers Disease...and even with all the challenges...etc. The memories are still very much there....and within, however something is clouding their vision, but if given the clarity...they re-surface...So...I am a firm believer that memories do not 'die' rather get placed somewhere were if we want, we can get access too....
Also by me saying that...that doesnt mean ppl choice to forget things...and leave those memories behind...because we can all put something in the past in the past and leave it there...but to actually say they die...I don't believe it.

What of the great artists ie. painters, musicans, writers, many are well before our time they to my way of thinking are immortal..We all leave a record of our being here now with the net this is even more so...
Yes children are a genetic form of immortality they carry your genes and pass them along..

Mikhail - Great Artists live longer in our memories it's true, but written civilization has only been around for a few millennia and great artists really for quite a bit less than that. Great works of art (sculpture, mosaics, or frescoes) from the greeks or egyptians or prior aren't necessarily remembered for who did them. We remember them not so much as art now with a creator but as archeological evidence of a style or time.

'Immortal' is a long time and I'd argue a great deal longer than any artist we currently remember.

When I think of the term immortality, it signifies life everlasting. I am not sure I could ever want to live forever in a world were friends and family would inevitably pass away...

People do live on through there ancestors or through art, music, writing, etc but there will come a day when artificats perish and generations pass where individuals are generally forgotton.

Meeper I wish I could say the same. After all for someone like me without faith or future, to keep living in a way that would allow active pursuit of life would be better...and to keep feeling, even if it were to feel the pain of loss, would be something.

When I think of immortality, several things come to mind. Are we talking spiritual existence, or through the achievements we have or leave behind, but for me when it all comes to the question of immortality still comes down to two things for mewhich is physical or spiritual immortality.

For me I would not want to be immortal. Even tho the Highlander series show did make being immortal look cool for a while. The one thing I do believe is the soul lives for ever. Throughout many beliefs around the world we are taught the soul goes to another level after the death of the physical body.

In my opinion immortality is your true essence within the shell of ourselves, known as the body. I believe there is an afterlife when our bodies give up. So then that would make our spirits immortal I would think.

When I spoke of immortality as in what we leave to man I meant even the smallest things for example.... The first person to wear clothing..that influence has lasted in several cultures. The first person to practice ritual....also has lasted for centuries. The first person to record data... so on and so forth. Yes even paintings, writing, and other things of that nature will eventually loose thier meaning and place. Its the smallest actions that we over look. You do not have to be famous or do something so grand that the whole world remembers your name. It could have been one thing you said to that kid down the street that begins awhole new idea or new way of thinking.
In all honesty I have no desireto be immortalized. There were many before me and there will be many after.

I believe in immortality

I believe you have a soul, and that soul never dies, but that soul needs to be in a body and the body eventually dies and then the soul finds a new host to live in. Which is why I also believe in past lives, because your soul lives in your body, but has also been in others and experienced many different things, and sometimes you can tap into that and feel what your soul has been through

I have to agree with Evangius on this. In the end we are only the legacy we leave behind, the good times had with friends and family and the life lessons we teach our children.

There seems to be three distinct definitions being discussed here at the same time.

1. The possibility that by some curse or blessing - a person can live for a very long time in the same sentience as an essence, or even in the same body. (OMG, Think about the corrosion of the chemical bonds that would go on here!)

2. The sentient soul or essense of a person, continuing in other forms, living other lives. (Reincarnation)

3. The legacy that a person leaves in one lifetime allows the essence of that person to live on....

The first is regaled in myth and folklore. The wandering Jew, the cursed Judas, etc. Then there are the stories of the Ghost that is trapped eternally in this world.

For the second scenario, there is the idea of reincarnation. Someone once told me, "If you believe that we have an immortal soul, then just to have it exist for 100 years or so would be terribly inefficient! Of course we are re-incarnated!" (The best argument for reincarnation I've ever heard, btw.)

Finally, the idea that the memories of someone else keeps our spirit alive somehow.

Could it be more than a metaphor? Could a person or group of persons' thoughts trap us on this world to wander forever as etheral beings simply by providing enough "energy" to magnetically bind us here?

I believe in immortality through reincarnation, but that is a tricky subject in itself...

I believe in the immortality of the soul, and the immortality of an ideal. A person lives on after death, I believe through reincarnation. An ideal can live on forever as well, but that's a different story. Immortality in the physical sense is pretty much impossible for a human.

when i think of immortality i think we all have it.... we live on through are children when we make them they all get a peace of us and that peace gets passed on through the generations. not to mention you can aslo be immortilized in outher was such as authors or actors or einsteine or davenchie for there works and such. i think its just how each person sees it in there mind on how immortality is.

My perception of immortality is the mind...It plays a major role in this through memory, you pass the memory onto others and it will remain forever as long as it's passed on. Another theory could be not just memories of loved ones, family, friends or strangers but objects or ink, drawings and paintings treasured and apprecited. The concept of immortality is that it never dies, doesn't fade away & remains forever. But what is forever? Can we really grasp the idea of something that will exist for eternity?

With that in mind, I ask what is the soul?

Is it perhaps a pattern of energy, one which exists alongside and within the physical of the body?

And when we die, what might happen to this form, which, since it is energy, must go somewhere?

Does it dissipate into the greater flow of the universe?

Or can it be maintained as a singular entity, retaining memory, personality?

If the latter is the case, than this may represent a path towards acheiving true immortality of the individual conciousness.

Immortality is a concept of the afterlife. Many cultures use many ways trying to be immortal, None still between us. After the body die, then, you soulk is transported into different plane of existance, mean, there many life after this one. The purpose of this life, is to get prepare for the next one.

Immortality is a natural thing, but, as is all natural things, it get deluted by humans who change things for them.

For me I think of my soul being immortal, and coming back to seek out friends and family again.

i myself truely believe in imortality. i am a diabetic and have since i was 10 yrs old. my blood sugars have been over 1000 5 different times and i am still alive. the first time it went above 1000, i stood before good. all times it has been that high i have walked into a hospital and walked out on my own. to this day doctors still ask themselves "why isn't he dead??" as a normal diabetic should be in a coma at 600 and tech. dead at 900. its a question that has yet to be answered. but i do believe that i shall live for all eternty!! any questions plz just ask!!

Immortality? Is it real?

As in we live forever as I am now without end? No ...I don't believe anyone or thing is immortal. Our physical body dying I believe that to be energy so it does have to go somewhere and I like to think that it goes on in another shape or form. I believe it becomes part of all things on earth. The Spirit or Soul in my mind have an afterlife.

Immortality and realness, is dependent upon these issues.

The key ingredient that determines reality and that which makes someone immortal is the ability to rectify a scenario where divided by lies and censorship because of fear and insecurity.

A god may forgive people who do not rehabilitate themselves to keep pews full, but pariahs who are alone will give the tough love necessary for people to remove the blocks they have on their individual expression by being brutally frank. Being real to get people to awake, changes reality. Every one of us will die. Some will be remembered longer than others, but eventually, every one of us will also be forgotten. Our legacy, our works, our marks on the world will eventually be lost, erased, or forgotten.

There is the debate of the soul being immortal, through afterlife, reincarnation, or other such theories, but that's exactly what they are, theories and beliefs. None of them can be proven.

However, we are all still immortal. Not a single part of any one of us, energy nor matter, will ever be destroyed. According to physics, that would be impossible. We will be forever in existence, constantly changing from moment to moment, some changes too minute to be noticed, some as drastic as dying. We don't have any memory of the things the matter and energy we're composed of were a part of, but it has been around forever.

I shall live forever through everything I have taught my children, through all of their friends I have helped, through my poetry and artwork and through all the children's lives I touched working at the daycare.

Knowing I have helped other people in this life is more meaningful than phsyically living forever.

Simply put, I do not believe that any one person or animal or being will live forever. Their memory can be passed down and their achievements remembered long after their death. In that sense, nothing ever really dies, but as far as actual life, I do not believe immortality exists. When it is your time to leave, you leave. You cant hide from it.

The normal person that has only passed down memories to their famly...I think that they will eventually be forgotten.. I mean seriously in 1000years or so, there great, great, whatever will not still remember them, so eventually they will be forgotten. The famous, & people who have done something great, be it art, battle, etc, they will be remembered because they will be written in history & continually read about by someone. However this brings me to think that the people left behind in graves will also leave something behind. Their name in stone for anyone who happens across it to see. However where I live there are alot of run down, forgot cemetaries that no one even goes in anymore, so that kinda rules that out as well!

I honestly think that VR has evolved since I have been a member. Lycan ask that same question a year ago and you would have gotten massive replies based upon mythical Vampire Lore. I am so impressed with the outcome here. And In a strange way proud of the majority of members that posted logical and sensible answers.

My opinion on Immortality differentiates between our soul and our lives as we lived it. I have not died yet so I cannot say that I believe firmly that our souls live forever, or reincarnate. But I do believe as mentioned so many times here that immortailty for us is lived on through our Children, music and art. And so many things. History plays a number of answers to that question alone. I guess it just depends on what each person here deems immortality to mean.

I think about spirts and how we will live forever.

In a sense that you can do things to gain more life and age slower, but to live forever is almost impossible

of this i will say, i have seen my life flash thru my brain twice. once when I "died" from a skateboarding accident, back in the early seventies, and this last time when in december of last year they removed my gallbladder and several feet of my intestines. I know I will die, and as much as I want to believe the fairy tale of immortality, it isnot real. my bloodline will end with me. I am not sure I wanted to have children inherit this mess of a world that we now live in.

I think of just being alive forever , not being able to die and staying young.

My impression of immortality has to do with energy; that bodies are energy fields and that energy cannot be created or destroyed. I think our energy is recycled, and re-born in another form. I am not sure that I believe we have memories of those "past lives" but I am a firm believer in reincarnate energy.

Immortality could be mant things. Vampires are probally the most common thing people think about when they hear the word immortality, but art and music could be immortal, too. Good music and art never dies.

Immortality to me is passing down of genetic codes of a family. The family line goes on as long as their are members living to continue the line...

immortality, to me, refers to that which lives on for longer than one lifespan after we die.. nothing is immortal.. even the vampires/immortals that might be amongst us will eventually get hosed by a large meteor/plague/war that will take us all someday, mebbe thousands of years from now, so thus, nothing is truly immortal...

Immortality could be anything, from what you pass to your kids and they to thiers. Or a poem published or written they continues to be read long after you are gone. Anything that brings you to mind to someone after you are gone makes you immortal because it stirs your energy no matter where you are.

For me immortality means your soul. There are people who have very old souls in younger bodies. The physical body may die, but your soul lingers.

It appears that potentially man was meant to evolve through vampirism, the things I am experiencing are so frightening yet so real and palpable, that I think there is a reason for all this.

when i think of imortality its really what you feel inside that is real and that if you think its real it can be real. I know that i have had ppl tell me that the more you belive something is immortal that they can reach immortality. I guess its up to anyone on what they may think is immortality theres just not really any way to explain it to each person is there own.

Well my thoughts on Immortality is its what we leave behind to our loved ones. Its something that we share with our kids,family,friends,coworkers,and even a stranger. It is as though our legacy. That is my thoughts when I think of myself and immortality.

Immortality is real....but maybe not in the physical sense that alot of folks on this site claim to be.

But, things of your life may live forever...such as pictures, heirlooms, or maybe just simple story. Your descendants may make you immortal by sharing your life story with others.

yeah, the one last thing was I had a chance to actually program my unborn daughter. I got into a wing of my brain, upon leaving it, and I hear three times baby talk, but it was feminine, now, I ain't never really heard baby talk, mother's tend to keep children away from me, and it was a female.

so as I was being rewired I programmed my daughters.

I told them be a good Damphir, sex is not evil, and if you find a good man take his hand and do not let him turn into a vampire.

Immortality is a thing that has been exagerated. If you thinkl about it we all live on through your children and there children and so on and so forth.

We all die but to me immortality is your soul and spirit living after your Body has expired. We all live on through the lives we make when we are mortal. As we die our spirit lives on.
That's just my thoughts on it.

I do not believe in Immortality I believe someones name or spirit will live on forever but not the person itself. Cause it is nature to die and be reborn. In whatever form or nature it is deemed to be.

When I think of immortaltiy I think living and never dying. But that is what most people think.

Recently I have changed my view of immortality as being something that will be remembered and added to the history books. Things that your family name will carry on well past your death and reincarnation.

Immortality is just something to be called never ending so as long as one person keeps repeating it then your immortality is set in stone.

i think we live on through accomplishments, and the memories we leave our friends with........

there are many different views but in mine is nothing last forever

I am the believer that immortality is only meant for a handful of mere mortals to achieve the level of greatness.. ie Alexander the Great, his name will go down through the history for his acheivements... Then on the other hand Hitler will be remmeber for all the war dictatorship and his massacre of millions of people( supposely) And i will be remember for all of time for being SPONGEBOB NUDDIEPANTS.... but seriously would you really want to be immortal, yes you could gain so much knowledge and learn soo much bout the world you live in.. But what about being able to love someone for all of time?? Your lover dying every 90years or so... I would prefer to live a single lifetime with the one person who i truly love and die with them... Then to live a eternity and to lose so many... Dion
