I dont see myself as a loner. I am quite social. There are times that I prefer my solitude, yes, but this site serves as a prime example of how vampires ARENT loners. I see a rather large social network here

Well considering how they might be treated if ppl were to find out what they are yes. I know I would hate to be disected by a mad crazy scientist...*~* Then again there might be some that don't care if ppl know? So the only way to know for sure is if you are lucky enough to meet one that is if you even would like to meet one?

Okay everyone seems to be giving you a lil of a hard time here. However what they have said is true. I will try to answer what I think you are asking. I think some vamps are loners. Society in a way makes vamps this way. Society looks down on it, so it's easier to hide it. I have noticed that alot of the vamps do seem to be shy or loners! Still tho it depends on the person, cause some are not like that at all!

Ok, there were several posts made between the time I was writing a reply and when I closed the thread that were on topic, and had some substance that were pointed out to me. So, as long as the replies don't degenerate into one line answers of yes and no and I agree, I'll leave it open.

Ok. Are we talking about vamps as people who choose to live the vampire lifestyle or are we talking vamps as in the mythological creature??? I'll answer about both! :-D

Vamps as humans who live the lifestyle may or may not be loners depending on their personalities. I don't think they tend to be loners though. Not as a whole. Not as much as they might have in past times. It's becoming a little more commonplace nowadays to be a vamp. They don't feel the need to conceal their identities anymore and that makes for much easier socializing, right??

Ok. Vamps as the mythological creature. They might be a bit more inclined to be loners. Just as it was stated earlier who would want to be hunted down and dissected by a mad scientist?? Not me. That might make them stay away from the general public, but would they be loners within their own circle? Again I think this depends upon the person.

Hmmm... Did I even come close to answering the question??? *scratches her head*

In my opinion thats something that would depend on the individual. I know some that are very social and some that arent. I will tell you that in my experience the few that I know dont hang out in large crowds but in small groups.

People are loners. Loners are loners. I don't feel that a single Vampire is a loner. No one here is. They have obviously put themself in a place where they could possibly be speaking, via internet, to many people. Even some of the profiles here that proclaim "I hate everyone, don't talk to me," was made to be seen by many.

Even in the fictional stories the Vampire is always looking for a mate, or someone to spend eternity with.

Another question of this fact, who told people that vampires like to be alone? Obviously someone had to be around them, the vampire, to receive this nugget of information.

As with every person is a little bit different, I've always believed every vampire is a little bit different. Mythological or otherwise. Each species has it's own personality.

If you go down to the SPCA, you see the animals there even have their own innate personality.

I think that your environmental upbringing really affects your social skills. Some vampires may be more used to social situations. Therefore they are less likely to be "loners".

But I also believe that everyone has moments where they feel out of place. They feel like they are better off alone.

Let's see, if you mean the fictional, undead vampires of lore, I'd make the assumption that yes, they are loners. There can't b much of a social life involved there.

As for real vampires, people like the rest of us, I think they would be more affected by social issues. There's nothing inherently solitary (as far as I've experienced) about vampirism.

I think La6Muerte66 has summed it up for me nicely

The vampires of myth almost had to be loners. They weren't liked, people ran away from them and could only come out at night - I don't think it would be easy to have much of a social life like that

Let's see, if you mean the fictional, undead vampires of lore, I'd make the assumption that yes, they are loners. There can't b much of a social life involved there.

Modern people who have taken up the term 'vampire' to describe their lifestyle (I'm not even going to try entering the'real' vampire debate) - they are in human society, there will be loners among them definitely but only like there would be in any other society.

We could also consider if being a member of an online community like VR makes people / vampires whatever less of a 'loner'.

Or they could be complete loners in real life, and make up for their loss of any sort of real social life by chatting with online friends. It's a convenient escape for many, I'm sure...

La6Muerte66 yes definitely.

I would think in the old days when people were loners they sat in a room and stared at the wall. I'm sure some people still do this, I would call them the real loners

Now they have the net and some way to socialise, I think of them as less of a loner - maybe eventually there will be a different term for this type of person.

To turn back to the first question and, if my thinking is still holding together, the vampires that are here can't be loners

As for the loners who spend their days "socializing" with people online...

We already have a term for that. They're called "losers." The terms aren't that far off. lol. (I admit to being a loser... at least some of the time...)

My personal favorite is "Pathetic"

Back on topic... yes I think there is a very strong "anti social" aspect to vampires. But just because someone is introverted does not mean that they still won't have their extroverted moments when around other introverts. AKA... when they are around similar people.

That is why I think so many people both "hook up" and find great friends here... we all have one similar thing... vampires.

are vamps loners

i think everyone has made such good opions on this subject . i do feel that it depends on the person..... some are more loners and some are not affraid to be out there and have everyone know who they are...... but i think that goes for everyone not just vamps ..... some people tend to be off on there own not like to be around people for what ever reason that it might be.... shyness etc.... outhers are more bubbley more open and love to be around people........ its just a matter of the individual...... so i dont think you can really say all vamps are loners

Not entirely. It all depends on the person. Wether they want to be a loner or not is their own choice. Being a vampire doesn't make them a loner, their personality does. The same with any other species.

I think the general consensus is no, vampires are not "loners" unless they're just socially inept human beings, in which case they'd be loners anyway...

And fictional vampires, it appears, are loners by general consensus. There. Mystery solved...

It would depend on the vampire and whether he/she prefers the solitary life of keeping to themselves or the company of others. I don't believe vampires are loners. Nor do I believe they want to be. It's how society percieves vampirisim - Taboo. It's not very common you walk into a vampire, but then you wouldn't know if you had - them being cast out of the everyday living routine.

I don't think Vampires want to be, but sometimes there are those in society that dont understand us and so we sometimes are forced to remain alone unless we can find some that we can be with. I know I have spoken to a few and some believe they have to be alone.
I think one decides those things for themselves.

i think it depends on your defenition on loner.
to me a loner can be someone surrounded by people and that has good relationships with people, yet the keep everything inside. at night they sit alone inside their own mind, resting safely in the world they have made inside their mind.
you don't have to be alone to be a loner.
yet others may have different views on what a loner is.
so in my oppinion, there is no set way "to be" you can be a loner or a social bat (flying and traveling through many many different groups of people), you can be whatever you choose to be.

You got it in one. It definatley depends on the individual's definition of a "loner". You could be in a room of people, and still feel empty like there's something missing. Maybe it's a balance you can't be alone all the time but you really cannot be crowded with people too.

I tend to agree with what SouthernFreak said, where society makes vamps this way. I believe that a large portion of the society believes that vampires only exist in Hollywood, and therefore cannot be encountered in their own little environment. The ones who believe that will be, human nature, repulsed by use because they only thing they know of us is what Hollywood "teachs" them. That fact alone disgusts and even somewhat sickens me, but I say that about society because I have been there and done that on more than one occasion. Some may agree and others will disagree, but I hope my personnal insight on this matter will help you answer your questions.

you only get bit because you are desirable

once bitten twice shy

turned into a reject you become a loner

there of course differences bewteen the born vamps and the ones made

the born prolly are social creatures even though they are outcastes of some sort, and they may travel in circles and packs, unless you live in some woods in the Ukraine.

The immortality trip I am in the middle of one haa a chance to revamp themself, and in so doing they can reclaim all that was lost in the desirablitity factor, and then they need not no longer be rejects, or loners.

The vampire maker has taken the ignored feature of the made vamp and put them on a path to find the acceptible format that society can embrace the darkness of finally, but only if the vampire chooses death will he be immortal, and in the power of immortality, acceptance.

So the answer is NO

vampires are not loners, not the born ones

the ,ade ones may become loners, but if they do not have magick working for them, then they will stay loners

but death spirals can be gotten out of, just hit the throttle push the envelope and shoot out the side of the earth, and become one with this earthen hell.

I personally couldn't be more contrary to the stereotype of being a loner. I actually have a phobia of being alone. It's called Autophobia, Eremiphobia, Eremophobia or Monophobia. I constantly have to be with friends, talking on a phone or internet, or listening to music(just a voice is comforting). So in the case of loner Vampyres, it all just depends on the person and there personal preferances.

I dont think just becuase your a Vamp your a loner. Anyone in any given group of individuals can be loners or they can be a social butterfly. I dont really like the term loner but when I hear that word I think of a quite person maybe someone with social issues. I think of someone who keeps to themselves and dosnt stray out. I think this is such a broad term.

There's no rule that says if you are a vamp you HAVE to be a loner...

I personally am a loner, but there's a lot of stuff in my past that has made me that way. I've gotten burned many times by many different people, so I've chosen to keep myself closed off from most people.

However, when I meet someone that I feel as though I could open up to, I do try and I have made a couple of really good friends here on VR. So, I would say that although there may be some vamps who are loners, not all are.

If you were to pick up and start reading any sociology book, you will find that vampirism and gothic culture could be defined as a "counter-culture." A counter culture is a group that tends to go against the general culture in one way or another for one reason or another.

Usually, people find can themselves identifying with a counter-culture because they feel out of place in their mainstream culture, yet they still have a deep need to belong to some sociological system.
(There is a good user post that describes this called "Slave to Society" in the member articles section.)

Another example of a large counter culture in recent years would be the hippies of the 60's - a movement that was further pushed into the mainstream when more and more people got fed up with society supporting the vietnam war effort.

I have walked through many a coffee shop on a friday night in the last 10 years, looked o'er the crowd, and thought, "Hey, would you look at that! Goth is the nouveau hippy!"

So my quantified answer would be, If you identify yourself as Goth or Vampire, then you are identifying with a counter-culture probably because, Yes, Virginia, for one reason or another, you feel you are alone.

As everyone else pretty much said it depends on the personality of the individual as to whether they are socialites or prefer to be in solitude.

If we are speaking about the vampire of myth and legend then it would seem to me that the need for discretion would make them loners.

As for the mortal vampire...I'll go with the majority and say it depends upon the individual.

about this thread i would say that lamuerte has pretty much summed it up, as i would agree with everything he said, and i think he put it the best way

anyone in the vampire/gothic community is in some sort of a way a loner and thats because it is not exactly the majority of society and is an alternative way to live

I for one cannot speak for mythical vampires, I don't know of any. I also cannot speak for the modern vampire, so I will speak for myself. I am a loner. I have always been that way. I may serve in the military, and have a few battle buddies here, but none know me or I don't let them see the real me. none know i can manipulate energy, tis something that would get me in a funny white jacket if I spoke about it. I joined on here to find others like me, who would be willing to show me more of energy manipulation without the fear of being laughed at.

If You say You are a Vampyre, well people....thinkn you are totally off your rocker

I do understand this an before I met LordLestat, i diddnt ever think i would become as 2

i was a loner from bith of my virgin mother { not the virgin mary }

I knew i was different from a young age and so did all my human family{who are all immortal now}

Can our abilities or hightened awareness not make vamps loners? I mean me personally, I don't like to be around alot of people. I feel their emotions & for me it can be almost unbareable at times. So yes I think vamps probably do tend to be loners! Not all but some, & for each their own different reasons.

people tend to believe what they tend to believe, and this is about more of what the individual does perceive bout them self as they are encouraged to feel what their master wishes them to feel, as anything they are not allowed to feel is not encouraged or rewarded. Whether the individual is hypnotized to be social then they will be social, if the stars are just right and the moon says stay in and rot, then you do that too.

Life when ya boil down to it is best defined as the inclusion of others, and vampirism is the draining of life force from another. Sometimes you drain someone through excommunication, and sometimes you drain by being in close proximity.

So if a vampire is going to feed, and they have to feed on others then they are social only to the point they get their fill.

Ultimately however, life is not inclusion of others, it tends to be more of excusion of others. Making other people feel like they are nothing by keeping them away from priviledge, country clubs, even "gangs" is a sociological phenomena of inclusion and exclusion dynamics within the social strata.

Asking if Vampires are loners is a bit of an opened question my dear. As with the mortals they once were this is an individualistic choice, though some would argue that ALL vampires would need to be social to some degree in order to feed successfully regularly... but it is my opinion that the predator in a vampire would see only weakness as far as mortals are concerned, and the immortal would be considered as possible threats... hence a vampire may be crowded byaddoring mortals, but be forever alone

The space vampire flic LIFEFORCE

well, when there was only one vampire left, she went into hibernation.

Then the space ship captain found her and he brought her down to earth by accident, and then she took over just about all of england.

That would indicate that a vampire without hosts would either die or go nto hibernation as she did, because they need lifeforce.

I for one do as I feel at the moment, no guidelines. In my opinion thats something that would depend on the individual. I know some that are very social and some that arent. I will tell you that in my experience the few that I know dont hang out in large crowds but in small groups.

Yeah, I agree that it can be up to the individual...tho in my case, since I was awakened and around before online stuff came about, it was up to me to seek or not, anyone to keep company with in real life- a task which was harder than one would think....as so many of us naturally are nomadic, or reclusive...in a sense.

I am a very social person, being a Leo too, I can get out and talk to anyone, go just about anywhere and blend in. Sometimes I am just about invisible too if I am taking a low key approach.

The thing about vamps inb the community as a whole is that usually, unless they subscribe to big online groups, and take that risk of meeting offline...many really are loners, in that so many avoid having to meet..I think it's kind of like a anonymity thing.

well I maintain it is a stage thing.

I have gone from poseur to voyeur and back to0 poseur

being a poseur is dependent upon being in the light

losing body would tend to be more voyeuristic, and regaining the body would make one more in the middle of things.

Reanimation is possible. The very same trait which took the body away is the same power to bring the body back.

The traditional vampire of myth was often a family member coming back to feed on it's own family. Various stories were told of meeting a dead relative in the night who seemed to almost not know they were dead. Sometimes happy to see a familiar face and sometimes saddened but not so much a loner.

Fictional vampires and later myths hold that the vampire was a predator and not a predatory pack hunter. That would make it more solitary. One doesn't appreciate competition for meals and too many predators would provoke a defensive reaction from the prey.

Human vampires or those that have 'evolved' into modern vampires, are perhaps viewed best as individuals and while most wouldn't necessarily explain their nature to a common stranger, have developed social structures or normal relationships as would anyone else.

I think Pookachu was right on target. The "outcasts" often are loners in a way. The way of being different from those around them. Yet the things they have in common with those around them is often the need to belong.
A basic human instinct...one of survival as much as anything else. Cave dwellers had to belong to a clan to make it...loners rarely lived long outside of the clan. I don't think it is much different today. The clans are just not in the caves.
So, I think "vamps" are "loners" until the find thier "clan".

I have to agree with Elemental. I think everyone is at times out of step with "normal" society. Some are just more so than others and until they find one or more individuals that has similar interests and lifestyles they will appear as loners. Then there are those who simply prefer their own company much as hermits have through history.

Yea, it is up to the vamp to be a loner or not, but why share the darkgift alone? Vamps would meet and be social, sharing tales and memories. I'm social, lots of people are, living a lonely life can drain you. Vamps would want friends.

I think most beings are social creatures by nature. Sure, there are some hermits running around out there that seclude themselves from the general population, but overall I think most have the need to interact with other to maintain sanity as well as physical desires.

you have to be a loner, to have the peace of mind to retreat from a confusing world, to summon the collective wisdom of the ages, and then to out from that reclaim your lost clan.

Many religions have a solitary journey they must undertake before they preach.

The journey leads right back to the center of the hearth and home. People who do not leave them selves behind to internalize the outside reality, can stay misfits if they want, but I think the vampipre trip brings us right back to the world in which we were meant to live.

Life is the inclusion of others, the study of death is to become a patriarch or a matriarch, andn to have all the pieces in place to safeguard your bloodlines

As the actual "vampire" existed only in the Slavic accounts of Eastern Europe (no, vampires cannot be found in almost all cultures just because other beliefs exist in demons or creatures who might share a trait also ascribed to the modern fiction of the "vampire"), if the truth is to be sought re: who and what the original "vampire" was and is, one must go to these earliest of accounts and not the later fictitious bastardizations of same that resulted most recently in Stoker's "Dracula" and all subsequent Hollywood-esque fictions.

And should one do so, one quickly discovers that the primary traits today considered "vampiric" did not exist prior to about the 17th Century. The only trait still found in modern fiction that was originally factual is the belief that the "vampire" (upir', vapir, vampir, etc.) was one who had returned from the dead. As to why they had returned and what they did following that supposed return... well, to discover truth from fiction, one must study the actual first-hand accounts of all such as reported by the Slavic populations of Medieval times.

Well putting more thought into this forum the idea hit me that anytime you dont fit a social norm or have the feeling of being an outcast dosnt that make you feel kinda like a loner. With this said i can see how a modern day Vampire could feel this or how people could give them this kind of title.

lonerism is vampiric, leads to vampirism because

of the alienated feeling vampiric people's feel.

When you realize everyone on the planet feels the way you do, pretty much, as most people are goth on the inside, it just that they do not wear their black hearts on their sleeves.

There is courage in going about life on your own, but you find your ilk and fit in in time.

There is nothing wrong with us, living in isolation is just waiting for a transformation to come when we see through the SUV driving red colored shiny happy people, it is just an act.

I wonder why don't they get real and stop pretending life is good and happy and they are successful, the only way you change or change life is through the admission that our life powers are too passionate to share with a bunch of fakes.

Go ahead pop a zoloft, make my day.
