This has been a thing that has always been a mystery to me.
When someone has powers, does that mean that they use more of their brain than someone who doesn't?
For instance, if someone has a special ability, say telepathy, do they use more of one side of their brain or both? If the person is using more of their brain will the brain eventually overwork itself?
I could really use some insight on this so I welcome all comments and opinions.
Based on what limited scientific research that has been conducted it has been proposed that individuals that contain a "so-called" 6th sense or special ability have an increased brain usage pattern.
It would only make sense that the brain uses an increased area since there is so little that is known about how the human brain functions.
I allways thought that people of high inteligence used more of there brain then someone of lower inteligence.
As for which side of the brain would be used for certin powers, that would depend on the person that has the powers. Some people use one side of the brain for one thing, but another person could use the other side.
Typically we use about 10% of our brain potential. There are different areas of the brain that control different areas/functions of the body and mind. studies have been completed to map patterns and find out what areas control what.
The thing I have found amazing is when there is an injury to the brain and some dr says...."will never speak/walk/talk/ whatever" and somehow the brain creates a new path to perform the same function that it used to and the person IS able to walk/talk/whatever. Now that is amazing...:)
i do believe that considering the complex nature of running the human body our brains are capable of much more than what is required of them on a daily basis yes i do think that those that have those special abbilities are using a part of thier brain that the rest of us havent figuered out how to call apon..
~with 10% of the brain used the most~
It is very optional that if things go "wrong" in ones life
alarm bells start off........this is a natural reaction to all of us~
the better {for lack of a better word } part of the brain is used for the things we are mentally unaware of
I too suspect some people use more or different parts of their brain than most. But I've never seen where a person's IQ had to do with more brain usage than those of average or lower IQ's. If that's been studied I'd love to see the results of it.
I dont think it means one uses more of his or her brain power but uses parts of the brain that others cannot or have not learned to access.
The brain is amazing. I was born with severe hearing impairment and the doctor said that my brain drilled holes through my semnicular canal to bypass the affected area. It's unheard of. My hearing is getting better extremely slowly over time. For example I couldn't talk on the phone until I was 14. So if my brain could do something that small, then people who move things with their minds must use more of their brains.
Considering the "normal", average person doesn't use the full extent of their brain. If the ones with gifts are able and that portion of their brains been tapped into. I don't see why we can not do all those things, such as mind reading, moving objects and such. There are so many gifted people in the world. They have the ability to tap into the hidden portions of the brain.

I can not say that I have an answer. I look at it a few ways.
1. The possibility of extended brain usage.
2. Gifts.... if it is a gift from someone higher then it wouldnt have to be brainn power....
3. The individuals that are able to do things that others can not, are perhaps not simply human.... angels unaware, vampires, etc.... it could be most anything.....
Nothing is for certain, and somethings are to never be known as far as I think....
Mind you this is all just theory to me, and I by no means claim to be right. :)
It makes sense to me that if someone has a special ability that they may be using a part of the brain that is not normally used.
I would tend to believe the same ammount is being used the 10% we use now only certain peoples hard wiring as it were is differnt then others is all my opinion here nothing more
Said "abilities" have nothing to do with brain power or intelligence. On the contrary, I tend to find that it is just the opposite. People who tend to be very "sensitive" to those types of things tend to not be very intellectual at all. And they "feel" more than they utilize "reason"
By the way, the "we only use 10% of our brain" thing
IS BULL
Actually do research before perpetuating BS
Anti it is what we've all been told much of our lives we only use 10% of the brain. Not everyone will research things although I will..I have a gift as well and even though I am not formally educated I also use my brain, so well Antieveryone people can be both...
"Not everyone will research things"
If it sounds fishy, and by all definitions of the word, it does....it has to be. Following information blindly is a bad, bad habit. You miss a lot and make your self look less than credible when you don't look deeper. There really is no excuse, but oh well.
Something to remember also is that when the brain is damaged, there are other portions of it that have the capability to take over the functions of the damaged portion.
Therefore I would argue that the brains of those who have a "6th sense" are actually able to have limited access to other portions of their brains. This considered, the self can also learn to control those portions better over time.
Antieveryone I says this due mostly because people tend to buy into myths they often do and let it alone after that..I research it is what I like to do..Many here wont even read the VR manual let alone something like this, they will tend to believe what they want and leave it at that. No more no less....
I would have to agree in saying that if a person were to have any such 6th sense or any other aility, they would have to be able to tap into the "unused" portions of their brain.
I heard it said that people that excerise more of the brain like on mind teasers and other things they have a tendency to be able to use more of their brain then most. Kinda like the more you learn the smarter you are kind of concept
OR. perhaps they use the same parts as everyone, but those areas are utilized in different, more effective ways.
I believe that the "6th sense" just represents the people that can better use their 5 senses. Like for example, many people say animals have a "6th sense"......but it could simply be that their 5 senses are so acute, that one mistakes that for another sense. You have to consider other angles, other...less exciting angles.
Frankly, I don't think it is a matter of the amount of the brain that is used, rather the parts of the brain. The brain seems like something that is monitored, registered if you will. Farbeit for me to judge who or what that does that, but I think that the useage of the brain is standard. Someone with ability uses different parts of their brain that may be closed off to others. But, those with abilities might be closed off to common, perhaps creative or skilled parts of the brain.
I have some(albeit limited) pyrokinetic powers. Because a good friend of mine is a student at neurology , he made a encefalograme while I was heating a glass of water. The results? My brain waves are slightly higher than the normal when I'm doing this , and also their frequency higher.
Supposedly, from what I've learned about this, theres a specific part of the human brain that does not get used. Only specific people born wth said trait use this part of the brain, usually those people have telepathy, or visions etc.
I have seen reports and research that shows and visually do, that the brain when active with the ppl who use their habilities, has more colors (or brain activitie) but more like a fill up of the space that usualy that we see on scan that are not active or even filled or in color, now radiates with both energy and ctivity and the magnetic field has increase around them, and in their brain att hat time.
I threw up a bit in my mouth when i saw that 10% myth being perpetuated...thankfully, AntiEveryone tried to breathe some reality into that post however unsuccessfully.
If the mind is capable of performing these higher functions, it is not because we have some section of our brain that isn't being used by everyone else. While the brain can and does create new pathways when others are damaged or removed, it is not capable of completely diverting new responsibilities to already used portions of a developed brain (see lobotomy)
The process of thought creates electrical charges, the jumps that are made between neurons occur without direct connection, but if there are psychic powers, it is likely an extension of these normal processes beyond the body and not due to some part of the brain that we've been missing in the decades of study that have occurred.
I also thank Anti for bringing up the truth of the 10% myth.
I am more willing to accept Felix's explaination, that the phenomena can be explained as an extension of the brains normal functions. Perhaps the people with "gifts" are able to cause impulses to jump from their synapse ends to objects, or othr peoples synapses. I discount the theory that the brain is 90% wasted space and we just have to use the parts we don't normally use. Most of that space is tied up holding memories. If your hard disk is full of programs and mp3 files, while it's not being "used" as you post to the forum, it also can't be accessed to help speed up your internet connection.
I think people with psychic powers definately have different brain frequencies than most.
Ever see the movie "Scanners" with Christopher Walken?
I think it has to do if their "powers" are mental.....some people just have extra energy they can manifest
We know less about the brain than any other organ in the body. I believe that some are attuned to things that others are not, because certain parts of their brain are working more or are used more. This could be the direct result of genetics.
I feel that people with gifts do infact use more of their brain.
I've wondered about this before too. Personally I think that they aren't using anymore of their brain then the normal 10%. But the brain is able to make another sense heighted if one is failing. Maybe that has something to do with the gaining of special abilities?
I've only ever heard the 10% rule applied to teenagers. As teenagers we learn it, and so as teenagers we think that it applies throughout life. Due to brain programming.
I don't think that the brain is used for real thought anymore than the heart is used for real love; perhaps it is just a snot factory as the egyptians believed.
*chuckles*
I personally think that the brain is a filter for our actual thought which IMHO is part of our immortal self (soul?). How clogged your filter is, it's tint, or how activated the charcoal is (whichever analogy you wish to use) the better / worse you are at making paradigms. In other words, I think that the brain is a prejudice factory.
And so what we program into our brain (Like human beings are the only imperfict thing in an otherwise perfect creation; or I only use 10% of my brain) affect all of our thoughts.
Is there anyone (besides atheists/agnostics) who believe we cease to think after we die? If not, how do we think when our brains are rotting in the earth?
from what i have read about on this and the beings i have conversed with on it.. you use more of your brain.. parts that others dont normaly use... during everyday usage
Truthfully from what I understand...each different type of ability...empathy, telepathy, astral projection.... uses different parts of the brain. Only way to truly see the difference would be to watch a cat scan or MRI as they use their brain.
Kglitterous
you are, somewhat correct about the teenager thing. They simply have underdeveloped frontal lobes. This area of the brain is the part responsible for higher thought, morality, etc. This underdevelopment is said to make young adults more capable of violence and "primitive" behavior. It also tends to effect males in general, this is said to be why a mans fuse is shorter than a woman's and a man is more prone to try to solve a problem through lashing out with violence. It has nothing to do with intelligence, so boys no need to show how short those fuses are ;)
I think that in order to access those powers, you have to have some larger capacity of usage in the brain. That's just me though.
im sure someday they will make a pill so we can access more of the brain
my thoughts exactly CHORDEWA its all hearsay untill its done too. though I think you will find it already has been done and the fact that the info is so hard to find speaks for it self.
darkseleene they did and there are many.
they are of the phenethylamine family and also
indole family. all banned becouse of the out ragous ideals it gave people afterwards. its hard to police and dictate a people if they can think for them selves. its been a war for a long time to try and solve this. there are chemicals that will open the third eye to the point you can talk to each other mind to mind. all banned and with no proof what so ever of neuro toxicity. goes to show does it not the DEA can invent ICE which kills the world and the things that open a humans mind to the possiblity that there is more to life than there dead end job and voting liberale are banned. It will not be like this for ever. many are working on it as we speak.
I thought we only used a small part of our brain anyway,so I cant see us wearing it out by accessing special powers
well, we do not.
we use what we have, all if not MOST of it.
Well we use very little of our brains in actual fact.... we only use what we need at any given time... so i gues yes our brain usage would increase
I think that in many ways we are all given powers. If you are lacking in one area then you gain in another. But if you are not lacking and gain a little extra edge like any type of expanded mind then you just live on a little higher plane.
Im not sure it means that you are using more or different areas of your brain. but having the ablitity to access it is a learned ability
So. As statics show the average person uses about 10% of their brain. I've been through countless studies and I use on average 16%. When my emotions are involved that almost doubles. I have mild telekinesis when I get very angry. I've blown up lamps and caused power surges. I lose my temper virtually never as I do not wish to become a lab rat more than what I already am. So I keep much under wraps. The military uses whatever they can. So for me. Well.......
Luguile, please post the studies that show we use only 10% of the brain. If you've read this thread, you will have seen that claim challenged.
It is our understanding that the brain simultaneously fires in multiple areas of the brain at any given moment in time...Everything is wired together and used.
I have no idea where you came up with the figure, 16%, but if that's a result of a scientific study, I would love to see the data.
I would submit that if you pointed out the 84% that you do not use and I excised it, we wouldn't be having this conversation; and if you were lucky, you'd be having your lunch through a straw.
Threads like this one are a great example of how we often read the initial post and then add our own without reading any of the other responses.
Thank you Joli and Anti for trying.
i wonder...several of the people on this thread have claimed to use x % of their brain, how do they come up with this number?
it makes sense that people who do have extra abilities would access parts of their brain differently. it doesnt necessarily mean that they use more of their brain, but perhaps the way the nerves and connectory are used it produces an abnormal response.
I 've always thought that a person with supernatural abilities would of course use more of their brain. I also have heard if u try hard enough u could also be trained to use more of ur brain. I mean like they say we only use a certain % of our brain in a statistical point of view but it is not the only amount we can use.
Note: I am no neuroscientist, but would love an opinion of one if there are any on vr about this topic.
My opinion is that of most on this forum. However, any synthetic enhancements via "scientific progress" we may or may not see in the future do not interest me as I can only ponder nature in its natural form and not a manipulated form beyond ones recognition.
It's a true mystery to me. I have never researched this topic but it's a very good one. I don't know what to think when I see a child with a gift to play an instrument at a young age and be emotionally challanged... are they considered more intelligent than others? I have alot of questions about this too. Very interesting posts.
The general consensus is that certain abilities, such as telepathy, empathy, etc. are not so much using up more of the brain that we already use, as much as it is a matter of tapping into areas that we as a race have always had, yet seldom make use of anymore-that these areas tend to lie dormant for most people throughout their lives, unless and until something triggers it inot use. I for one think that we all have the ability to experience these types of abilities, it is just that most people either can't or won't admit to such things existing, and therefore never tap into the power that is at their disposal.
As far as I know the Brain it the one organ we know very little of so ... unless they can acurrately test it, It just don't matter. In my Opinon...
Why would something Supernatural be using more natural abilities?
If you are using a supernatural ability it automatically implies that you are NOT using more of your brain.
I am of course still suggesting that these abilities are attached to the soul; so I wonder if anyone has evidence of animals exhibiting supernatural behavior.
(Some of you I am sure believe animals have souls... I am not sure I want to get into that.) Perhaps this should be a new thread?
Luguile
I too would LOVE to see these studies. If indeed they do exist, they are from a time prior to our realizing that it is a MYTH.
It is asinine, we do not only use 10% of our brains, why not think about that a little.
by the way if you only utilize 16% of your brain......well lets just say you would be riding the short bus.
The brain consists of white matter surrounded by a thin layer of grey matter. The white matter is made of mylenated axons of neurons while the grey matter consists of dendrites and terminal arborizations. This can be thought of in terms of making a connection on a telephone. The grey matter are the people on each end of the line, and the white matter are the cords and cables that connect them. The grey matter is what processes information and the white matter is what transmits signals to and from different portions of the grey matter. I believe that the ratio of white matter (non-processing) to grey matter (processing) is where the 10% usage of the brain was derived; 10% of our brain is actually used to process cognitive information (most likely consciously) while the largest portion is used to transmit information.
So basically, just because you don't used most of your brain to actually process the information, doesn't mean that the remainder of the brain isn't important in implementing that processing by transmitting signals from one area to another.
On another note: It is known that Glucose use in the brain is higher in more intelligent people. Gifted people have a higher potential level of brain activity and can use it more efficiently.
I don't, however know anything substantial about "sixth senses" and brain activity.
hmm, so now it appears that we must argue, "what parts of the brain are important" well the answer is that all of it has a purpose, use 10% for this and 2% for that or 50% for this, it doesn't matter. We need exactly what we have in order to be what we are. Yes, people get hemispherectomies (half of the brain removed) but there are things they can no longer do, things they struggle with that you or I would be able to do easily.
ophelia0925 just posted what direction I going to talk about
Quote: On another note: It is known that Glucose use in the brain is higher in more intelligent people. Gifted people have a higher potential level of brain activity and can use it more efficiently.
The key words in this is "brain activity". There is a test I took while I back in college that would show to which side of your brain you used. Either little more on left or little more on right.
Durring the time I was there. ONe of my teachers would get the small mark on the scale to center up. ( between both sides of the brain ) All the test proved was it would show how someones thought process was being used.
Do I believe there is many secrets hidden in the mind? With out a doubt I do! there are books you can read, and articles to which will tell you how to change your thinking process. Once you begin to change your thinking patterns. Then you just start to scratch the surface of the true power of the mind.
Good point BlackSheep.
As far as I am aware, most, if not all, of what we know about brain localization are correlates of consciousness. When we feel something, where and when does it register in our brains? I have read some research into how we interpret sensory information and how the brain processes and relates that information, but very little of it is definitive.
Each of us develops uniquely and therefore have uniquely sized and active processing areas in the brain. Most people's brains localize information differently, making it hard to determine the exact proportions of usage.
At this point, there probably isn't enough that is known about the brain from a scientific standpoint to give an accurate answer, although if there is the potential for supernatural powers it seems that it would inherently involve higher cognitive processing skills than that of a non-gifted person.
Well with one book I have in hand is called Change your brain and change your life.
The auther of the book who is a doctor did a very long study on the activity of the brain. Certain emotions certainrections.
The one thing people need to understand is the chemical reactions within the brain. Stronger emotions bring out more chemical reactions. Thus special ablities
could be awakend within the brain. We all have a magnetic field around our bodies. If you can cause a chemical reaction to alter the field as in enhance to make it stronger . Could or would we be able to make a something move? It is possible to a certain degree...
The resources are out there to read on brain activity. If you do a search I think a lot of people will be glad they checked into it.
I agree that there is some really fascinating research that has been done and it might be worthwhile to do some research into. Fantastic thread.
And also what is our brain capable of, we only use 10% what powers could we possess?
Mind reading, psychokinesis, telepathy, contacting the dead?? the possibilties are endless because it is so unknown.
There is also a test you can take to see which side of your brain you favour and how to train the weaker side The Brain test
Also, hauntings, could they be manifestations of the mind, when you think of it in those terms you can just imagine what powers the mind holds. Its quite scary. If everyone had these abilities.
i agree with alot here when they say that those that have the abilities have figured out how to use a part of there brain the rest of us havent.......and yes our brains are more capable of thing we dont even know......
Im not a big believer in the lateralization of the brain but areas are specialized in the brain for certain funtions. Maybe it is the interactions and connections between these different areas that contribite to these "abilities"
It's interesting that you bring up Chakras. The higher chakras are not even in the body, I am not sure if the lower Chakras survive death. It would be interesting to assume for a while that the chakras are an aspect of the soul, and that there is a physical representation of all the lower chakra points.
I think those of us who are awakening to the powers and gifts we possess are using more and more of the small percentage the average human uses.
yes i agree with most that if we could unlock the other 90% of our brain we would probably possess certain 6th sense powers, i believe there are some people who are born able to use other parts of their brain
I think that smarter or more gifted people do use more of their brain.
i do think the smarter u or the more powers u have the more u use of your brain as einstien was said to use more of his brain than average ppl
its definitely not the smarts you have. Some of the most intelligent ppl I know are morons when it comes to what some call powers. I think we just use a different part of the brain..some can some cant..its all there but access is different in all brains. logic vs creative
looking back with remorse on my idiotic drunk post, how do we think chemicals play into the ussage of our brain? are there drugs that can highten it? Obvioiusly alcohol can lower it temporarly (though thats when I have to most sucess with foriegn languages.. so maybe it doesnt negatively affect ones brain usage)
I think it is possible to use more than the average 10% of the brain therefore some people seem to have a sixth sense.
Using common sense, one would generally be left with the impression that those who do have these "special powers" would have an increase in brain function. However, whenever I read the news, I find myself questioning whether or not humans in general are a steady brain function decline.
Just reading this thread from beginning to end proves that some of us use less of our branis that others.
I feel that we are all born with the potential for "special powers".
We learn to speak because we are spoken to. I we learn to read because we are read to. We learn to love because we are loved. We only need to be reminded of how to use what is already there.
Lamia12 - I really want to agree with you...the posts that continue to spread ignorance almost prove their own point but alas, ignorance isn't a sign of using less of your brain...just less of your education. So while I applaud your sardonic methods, I will assume it was just sarcasm.
from y understanding, what little most people use of their brain as opposed to those with... extra abilities, is staggering... and no the brain won't overwork itself. it's not like heart that the faster it pumps the more strain that's on it. if you are able to use a section of your brain that controls esp, or any other ability it would not even feel like an effort really.. more like a relfex you can control such as blinking.. after awhile you just learn how to control it. and it takes no effort... for very long of course
I believe that we can learn how to use other parts of our brain. I think that psychics have the ability to tap into another part of their brain enabling them to see and hear things that other people cannot. I think that until man learns how to use more of the brain, we will not truly evolve to our full potential.
They say we only use 10% of our brain. Those with the capability to tap into more of it, I believe, have these "powers". Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow learn how to use more of it? Most people, I believe, are just genetically predisposed to using more of their brain potential than others...
yes... you can usually spot people with the potential by the simple fact of being a.. genius in disguise.. someoen who may seem average..but if you really watch carefully, you'll see someone who may seem to not be trying hard or not learning..but sometimes it may be someone who actually feels like things are moving too slow. imagine a 12th grader in kindergarden..he'd feel that everything else was so easy since he already knew it..that what was the point in even making the effort... potential is a great thing..when you can spot it correctly. and these are the kind of people that i think in the right enviroment.. could be the key to advancing this species to new hightes... if done right that is... and this people may be the ones able to tab other parts of their brain, and not even know it
Someone said earlier that that more intelligent people use mor eof their brains... that isn't true.
We use about 10% of our brain capacity. Only 10%. Imagine what would change if we used 20%? Imagine the possibilities of that.
Parapsychology isn't really taken as seriously as it cold be, so I don't really know if there are anything that had the potential to prove that the brains activity increases, or the amount of the brain a person uses at that time, or whether the neurological pathways change in anyway... but its a fascinating topic.
NosferatuWoman
they???? who in the hell are "they" because like I said before, it is a FALASY. A perpetuated myth, do some research, we do not only use 10% of our brains. People still don't bother to read the whole thread.
I don't know if those gifted with special powers, etc use "more" of their brain. I think maybe just better use of them. I also recall the left side controls motor skills on the right side of the body and the right side controls the left side of the body. So, that makes us left-handers the only ones in our right-mind.
very well put Irishvampgirl!! hahah
What I find amazing is the 10% of brain useage is still being discussed ! Well mabie those whom believe that do only use 10%
you would think that it would increase the brain function in some manner.
I don't think the brain will overwork itself. The body will over work before the brain does! I guess it could be that people with special abilities are using more of their brain. At the same time though, I kinda think that some people are just born different! Some are born with defects so why couldn't it be that some are just born with abilities.
you think it would only make sense that they would use more.....
