I would have to say that if they have moved on to the spiritual plane and were not reincarnated then yes. This is simply my belief though and is not based on anything concrete.

I woud say yes. I believe that though they are dead, they can hear, feel and think. they know that they are hated, or very loved. thats why we hear tales of ghosts and hauntings. just because theyre dead, doesnt mean theyre souls still dont thrive. and just because theyre ghosts, doesnt mean they dont get angry, or hurt.

I'd like to think that they do but honestly i "know" better. the only reason we bury people is for the living, so they have a place to go think of the person. it's only to help the living to come to grips with it.

Do the dead care would be a better question. If death means passing on to a higher realm, then I think i'd care little for past hatreds and if time in death is fleeting and ages pass in a moment, then we'd hardly worry about the years left to our friends and their sorrow when they'd be joining us in due time.

It depends on what you're talking about....

If you're talking about the dead bodies then I don't think so, I don't think they would know or understand what you're doing.

If you're talking about the dead spirits then I think they understand. But after you're dead, would it really matter who likes you and doesn't. Maybe that's part of understanding.

As other's have said "It depends".

I personally believe that once dead our spirits or souls pass on to another type of existance. I also believe this happens at, or very near to, the moment of death. I therefore do not believe the dead have any automatic connection whatsoever with the burial site. Perhaps some who have passed on are obssesed with their grave and would be hanging around to see what goings on surround the area. Those individual spirits may be aware and have some positive or negative response to what happens at their burial site. I think most, however, would not choose to take note of the goings on where their body was disposed of as they have more interesting things to focus on.

Perhaps they do, but what matters is the solace you get either from leaving signs of affection or by venting your rage. Graveyards are for the living not the dead.

I do not believe for one minute that a dead hunk of meat has any sensation or awareness. Though I suppose also, barring anything I consider conclusive, it pleases me to think at times that there may be no consciousness after death at all.

Although it's an interesting (and horrifying) idea that perhaps we remain prisoners, completely conscious, stuck in our rotting corpses until there is nothing left but dust. How delightfully maddening that would be.

I don't think the rotting lump you bury has anything at all. If the spirit was trapped inside, it puts burning the dead into a new light.

If the spirit / soul has some feelings left how does that work with the reincarnation folk ? Does the reincarnated spirit suddenly get angry because of what is happening at the graves of its past bodies?

I think the dead do know when we visit their graves. I don't know that they care about the bones left behind. When I was a 8, my family always visited the grave of my dead cousin taht was my playmate until I was 3. Afterwards, I would always have a dream in which she came to me and we would play.

Does the body in the grave know or care? IMHO no, there's nothing there but an empty shell.

I do believe that some in spirit form will know and care, only because your emotions are so strong at such a time that they hear your cries. I've personally felt the spirit of my beloved great aunt embrace me at times of extreme emotional torment.

It would soley depend on that persons' energy.
If those who had a true self before the body's death, it stands to reason that their energy continues on many different levels and either knows or feels from it.

Is the body more sacred to the deceased than any other part of creation? Even so, surely there is some attatchement, how many humans do you know of that hold no attatchements; how likely is it that our souls would so easily give up something we ar so very personally attatched to. I find it dificult to loose my attatchement to someone elses body, how much harder will it be to give up my attatchement to my own?

The body is the temple of the soul; as such it needs to be accorded respect. I am not sure why we respect the body more during death than during life.

Assuredly there is a reason for the slow decay of our attatchemnt... it seams poetic that as our bodies decay and become part of the universe; so might our conciousness leave it's body focus and return to universal focus. Presumably this will take a varying amount of time depending on the soul. It seams likely that cremation would seam very be difficult to a soul that had not learned detatchment, as would any other percieved abuse.

I like to think so mem. I have a heap of reasons why I think they do and the arts you seek also think so. but its a hard thing to think about. you should no piss on graves its bad for your soul. when I went to see my grandfather who is dead something happened to me. It was like a part of me changed and I could feel something there. but saying that I dont even know if that was in my head becouse of the loss I felt over him. one would think that as we move around so would they. and not hover over there decaing corpse. Posibily its just the mind set of the person who goes there that they notice. but many talk of feeling there loved ones when they visit there graves.

If they're dead then they're dead. I don't believe that the bodies would feel anything or understand. But as so many others have expressed maybe the sprits do. Or let's say you believe in heaven or hell, presuming that you do, you should have some link to your body that’s buried in the ground. But other then that... it's unlikely.

I would like to think that those who have passed on are aware of what is going on with their loved ones and know when someone remembers them by going to their grave. I quess I will find out for sure when I die. Those who believe the dead are unaware could be right. It is one of those things you do not know for sure while you are alive.

No, I don't really think they do, nor would they care.

A certain part of something in us may survive, but it isn't conscious.

Life wouldn't matter if death were not an end. It wouldn't be so precious. if there is life after it defeats a little of the purpose of living every day as if it were your LAST.

The often repeated family ritual of going to deceased loved ones grave once a month, or more frequently, to "visit" and leave some flowers demonstrates a belief that in some way there is a presence in the grave. This belief is shared by many, and is practiced in many diverse cultures.
This is an afirmation of the belief that the dead have a link to their mortal remains. The validity of this belief is however uncertain, as all belief in such things are a matter of faith.
"Do the Dead Know? Well you will have to ask one next time you see one of them.

It would depend on the dead. If the dead, was still here either through reincarnation or through a spiritual path wuld it care?possible. it would depend on the feels that were of the highest priority to the said dead...my opinion.

If there was no strong emotion that might have kept the spirit earthbound then I would hazard a guess that it probably would not not care if it knew.

Ya, I believe they do. I think it has to do with whether they have been held back by a loved one who cannot let go. If they are free to go on, they probably do know, but view it differently than we would. I'm sure they don't get pissed off or whatever. If we believe they have moved on, why would we wonder if they care?

I have to say the idea that a dead body in a grave would have any knowledge at all about what was going on in the wolrd around them is a little far fetched but lets say you believe in a soul or spirit. Well I'm not quite convinced that those things would communicate the same way you and I do. They really would have no physical form and honestly would have nothing to do with the physical world in general. But then we have to look at accounts of people who claim to have spoken to thier loved ones beyond the grave. Just another hallucination made for the mind to bring closer or a true encounter between to very different worlds?

See, this is why I like cemeteries. I'm never afraid of the ones who are in the ground...it's the live ones who'll piss on graves that you have to watch out for. Makes me hope for comedic karma for the little miscreant.

Very good point Artemka... I must admit it made me giggle.

Well- It depends how you would like to define "know." Conceptually there re a lot of different schools of tought on the ides of what exactly is "dead" and I suppose that depends on your spiritual beliefs.

I believe in ghosts, so I suppose I would be inclined to answer yes... however I believe in ghosts in the form of energies rather than actual "beings", so that would infer visiting a grave as perhaps being a positive or negative spiritual connection with an energy rather than "my grave is being pissed on" as you put it.

I don't think any of us are in a position to answer that... but when I die, I do invite you to do the tango on my grave, and I will try and let you know my responce!

I'd have to give it some thought..and I'm not sure I want to know LOL I believe in spirits, souls and reincarnation. I believe there is some awareness of what is happening on our plane of existence after death..but as to what extent it matters...very little I would assume. I like to think our souls are always in a progressive motion...so what would be the point of looking back and getting angry because someone is pissing on your old, worn out physical body rotting in the ground? Karma will handle it ;)

alot have posted about body being shell, sould moves on, but whay of the "ghosts" that stay around some places..its a complex question if one thinks about it. who stays who leaves who watches who doesnt..I do believe that either way cemeteries, for the most part, are for those left behind.

People who vandalize graves and disrespect the dead should be more worried about Karma than whether or not the dead know or care about what they're doing lol

MRD, do you honestly think that it is possible to have no consciousness after death? If there were no spirit remaining after death and you simply to fade away into some kind of void how is it possible that individuals that are clinically dead can be brought back. Additionally, how would you explain hauntings or reincarnation theorem which have been around since before Christ?

SacredDefiance, Having been clinically dead on three seperate occassions throughout the course of this existance I can assure you that there is more to it than simply winking out. However, I believe that there are many directions a soul can take from that point.

Certainly. I can state for a fact that there is a Heaven and a God due to my personal experiences with death. However, as I have also been witness to paranormal activities I believe that it is possible for a soul with unfinished business in their lifetime to remain attached to this plane of existance. Finally, I am a believer of reincarnation; however, my belief is that this is a choice that is given to someone not a requirement. It could be possible that individuals are reincarnated in order to give their soul another chance for redemption. I cannot be certain on all of that because now I am getting pretty speculatory.

I am asking a direct question as it sounds that it might be what she is saying... if a graveyard is "those who hae been left behind" then what is cremation? I believe that the same would apply for both in terms of the mind and body relationship. ANy thoughts on this youself?

to answer your question i belive it maters not wether we are cremated or not ....( put in a mosaleam or burried in the ground) i belive we all in the end ... end up in the same place no matter how we were raised or what our belifes... and from there we decide wether or not we would like to be reincarnated or what not... every religion has there own belifes and what not on death and the after life ... wether you be buried or cremated or put in a mosaleam........i belive that the after life is yours and what you yourself belive it to be.... i hope you understand my answer..... i know billy the just said in a thread you go were it is you wanna go .... yes it would be so nice to think that... but how do we actually know till we get there and go through it ourselves... and its something we all have to do on our own..........

They can know if they choose to know but most don't give a rats ass unless they have some type of unfinished business. That makes the oddity since most earthbound spirits forget what it is they were needing to do which leaves them to become lost souls as most would call them. But then again I also believe in limited reincarnation.

My personal belief is that the body is only a shell that holds a spirit. So as far as the "body" as we know it having feelings after death, I don't believe it to be true.

The spirit I believe does carry feelings into the next life, if they didn't how then would we know of our past existant lives?

I believe they do. There is actually a book that touches this subject perfectly and pretty much completely encompasses my belief on the subject. The book is called The Lovely Bones. The main character in this book is murdered and forced to watch her loved ones suffer (they are unable to find her remains for quite some time) and her murderer continue to get away with his crime.

I admit I didn't read everything previous to this, it's quite a long thread.

But as I saw posted before, it does depend. It depends on your own perspective and theorums. Under one person's believe, yes, under another's no, and yet by someone else, they've moved on and have no recollection of what happened before.

This really isn't a question that can be given any solid answer, unless you're asking it specifically under which beleive structure, and even then, you're gonna come up with as many answers as you will people.

I believe they do know. I feel the soul will stay with thier loved ones for a time untill they are ready for the next life. I have felt the spirit of loved ones with me at all times. I have also felt them leave and move on to their next life. So yes they do know. Do they care? Thats a tough one I think their only concern is are you going to be ok once that has been established they are ready to move on.

I personally believe they would know what is going on, especially the spirits of family members who have not yet completely moved on/have been reincarnated. I'd be careful what you do - don't mess with the spirits of the afterlife!

I have to agree with most people on here posting, I believe that once you are dead, your body goes into the ground and your spirit leaves your body.

All that is there lying in the ground is a shell. Nothing is left of what the person was.
