when i was 8 i watched dark shadows, when i was in 8th grade i watched buffy, when i was in high school i was inlove with the notion of the supernatural and how tv made it look to me.

when the craft came out a lot of my former friends flocked to me asking me to teach them how to be like the witches on the show, they thought they culd do it, and tried to hex people because they saw it on the craft.

when blade came out people thought i was posing, even though i had always worn back since the 5 grade. and they thought i had had my teeth done, they never noticed i had natural fangs that are sharpe, they then tried to file there teeth to look like angle then later on spike and hunge out in grave yards hoping someone like spike would bite them.

when i went to job corps , people watched the crucpil by arthur miller and thought my friends were trying to control them or vist them in there dreams.

when the exercism movies came out there waxs a big buy im those boards, and has casued a lot of hauntings in there homes.

who else has seen the effect on young people and tv shows and movies

I was just about to say that same thing, Felix. Rather you did things prior to these shows or not- you did not invent it... and you found it to be something you liked somewhere.

When I first saw Wonder Woman in the 70s, I wanted to throw a lasso and stop bullets with my bracelets :)~

Hello and good evening,

I have not the problem with the culture but when I swordfight they think they could do it like learning off of video games or the movies and would try to beat me... That did not succeed when I beat them in two swings thus bringing on the excuse they weren't 'ready' or they are 'too tired'. Then I beat them again. It happens with every person I verse, almost...

Yes, I have noticed this effect as well. Younger ones are more easily influenced, and one of the biggest influences on them are movies and tv shows. It's a natural thing for creatures to pick up on their surroundings and adapt to it, and it often determines how they will be later in life.

Everyone seems to want to be someone or something else more extraordinary than they happen to be; obviously people saw darker characters and were drawn to them as so many others. If they were coming to you and asking for your help, maybe you should take it as a compliment and see that they put you on the sort of pedistal they put these celebrities; you are a real-life version of what they see and they want the same...?

Popular televison or movies will always have those who follow, that's why it's popular and most of those people grow out of it.
Imagesinwords, I'm with you on Wonder woman, I wanted those bracelets so bad!
Here's a curve for you I've worn black since I was a kid, yes it suited me but also because I was overweight and was told it made you look smaller. It never meant I was depressed or even goth just more comfortable and less noticeable in black but people would still ask odd questions about my beliefs and such.

I know what you mean, just last month a friend of mine were having a serious discussion about a healing spell she was developing to help her dull the pain caused by her bad back, some 17 year-old (only two years younger than me) over heard us and wanted to see her do it to heal a cut I had on my arm then they asked "Aren't you afraid of the consequences for using magic for personal gain?" This kid claimed to be wiccan too! Come on! How ridiculous can you get?

I ead through spell books for things to work like nocturnal witchcraft when i do aura readings. its funny seeing people flock from genre to genre on the lateste creations.

I have seen this in youth as well. There are many youth near where I live now that are trying to get into Wiccan because they believe they can do the things that they see on Charmed. I don't believe that they grasp the concept that this is simply fiction presented for entertainment on a television show. These shows take things to the extreme.

PlacidChaos - Well then there's not more to be done about it. An effort in the right direction is always it's own reward with the added bonus of giving you a better moral ground to stand on. Youth will go on being youth but a seed may have been planted.

Isn't every generation mostly sheeple. I'm 34 and I don't remember the average person of my generation being amazing free thinkers...even as they've grown up. My point is that when someone shows themselves to be ignorant of a culture or a belief then you have the option to plant a seed. Either reaction you give will plant a seed, but depending on how you react, you will either reinforce their behavior and or ignorance...or you can plant a seed that might make a change of heart at some point in the future. Why not make the choice that benefits you in the long run.

We are all influenced by pop culture in some way, it is impossible to avoid. Children are especially influenced as they are more impressionable and cannot differentiate fantasy from reality. That is because of the current media hyping vampires and witches; there are real people who are practicing wytches and magickans, and people who are vampyres. All the fantasy makes it difficult for adults to sort out.

The thing is that most people even on this site who claim to be "Gothic" or a "Vampire" maybe influenced by what the media and internet tell them and not directly what they may feel. I had many people online tell me they are Vampires or Psy Vampires or Sang Vampires etc... As much as I like to believe them it is hard. The ones I end up believing are the ones who seem to have knowledge outside the media box and basing much of their experience on what happens to them then anything else.

As for Witches and Witchcraft it is almost the same thing. Nine out of atleast fifteen people that claim to be a witch on any site is probably not a witch at all or someone who practices based on what they have seen on tv. Most of the time their favorite films are The Craft or today The Coven.

I hate it personally because people can't take film as entertainment. Unless it is history based you should not believe what they tell you. That is why many are considered fiction or fantasy or horror for a good reason. Some films do indulge in the truth but only by a fraction. Films like The Craft held some fact but that fact was overshadowed by flying witches and violences and hexes and spells that work quikly etc... All of which young teens follow. With Vampire films people claim to be Vampires based on the fact they hate the sun, like black, have sharp teeth (which is natural occurance in some people) and other characteristics which does not directly make you a Vampire. It is said but so true. It makes people who are Sang and Psy Vampires or whatever they like to be called look like fools.

Anyway all and all people don't trust the media. The best bet is read historical books and get opinions on the subject before deciding what you like to believe in or whether you are a "Vampire". If you don't you will assume so much that is not always true.

Hmmm, I remember seeing Starwars when it came out, and we roleplayed it for ages. I don't recall ever trying to become a Jedi though... LOL. Even if I did... how would I research a religeon that has been dead for "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...", oh yes... I'd reinvent it like witchcraft.

I thinks its funny how the *little* kids try to protray the things they see on television. If their parents haven't explained to them that it is make believe then we have a small problem. LOL
I remember growing up wanting to act like the Jedi knights and fight off Darth Vader, I can remember my cousins and I acting like the super hereos. I think *kids* now days just like to feel like they fit in some where. Sometimes they think if they look and act the part of something they have seen on television, that will make them fit in better or be antisocial. Its all a fad.

I believe it is called "the search for the self". From the time we are children, we begin the hunt for our self-identity. We all go through phases, whether it be Flock of Seagulls hairdos, mullets, punk, prep, rocker, metal, goth, or whatever you want to go through.

We will spend this time defining ourselves and will change like a chameleon until we reach satisfaction and understanding. There is nothing wrong with this. Eventually, if you're lucky, you find what suits you the best.

Now, yes, I believe firmly that Hollywood needs to really watch what they present in front of these children who are seeking to define themselves. But because the industry is the industry, it's up to parents to keep their kids out of trouble. Parents can open their mouths and find out about what is influencing their children if they wish to spend the time to do so.

I can relate to this so well. Much of the community do not like the fashion vamps as it gives off mixed signals. Some are lifestylers and others are not and like to dress. Those who get into the limelight and wear tinted lenses, dress in goth types of clothing make people think all vampyrics are goth and run around with a zillion piercings, tattooes and always wear black. I can assure you that this is far from the truth and not all are involved with witchcraft, Wicca or any form of Paganism and are not particularly dark in any way.

I get asked if I fly...geesh.
Some, in fact many do have a sensitivity to light. Glare problems and or UV sensitivity. The why I am not sure...but it's true all the same. I am one of them. Then others do not...but there are enough that do that it comes up but they most assuredly can go out in the daytime, have day jobs and do things like anyone else and spend the evening up and awake but even if we do have reversed circadian cycles one can adapt. Many get a diagnosis of insomnia.

As for fangs, pointy teeth do not make fangs. Fangs are usually from what I understand hollow. I have always felt the fang bit to be urban legend but that's just me. Therefore its not a scientific or documented belief...I think it is something mixed in from folkloric things. Maybe only some have a hint of this due to various bloodlines...I just don't worry about that. It's not really anything that necessarily identifies one as a vampyric...mundanes have pointy teeth very often at times.

It's just when we get people who come into groups dwelling on pastlife stories and things we know that come out of VTM and such...and insist there was a real Lestat that Anne Rice based her stories on our eyebrows go up. We try to gently re-ecucate them. We do not accept all the dwelling on Vlad Tepes either as he was not a vampire. Just a man, a Warrior that a writer used as a stereotype for his book when he ran across a book written about him along with the word Nosferatu he used from the same book which was a misunderstanding of the writer and is a misnomer ...its not a real word. Elizabeth Miller who is the foremost authority on Bramm Stoker has written about all of this. She is a nice lady as I have emailed her to reprint one of her articles that goes into all of this.

I hear it all and most often like everyone has been speaking about, its from young people, unfortunately.

TV, Music, and Hollywood, will forever influence our youth. Yes it's annoying, but lets remember they are easily influenced, and try to encourage them to not follow an image and be themselves. Who knows maybe some may really want to know the practice of the craft, or the knowledge of vampirism. Everyone will forever know this to be myth unless we spread the knowlege of what we know. Others will consider this to be a fad and just grow out of it.

In reality there is very little originality. We are all copying idea, thoughts, dress, etc from someone who had those very ideas before.

You can claim to have been wearing black since the fifth grade, but why did you start doing it then? Was it the perception from the media and others that that was the dark misunderstood color? More than likely you copied someone else.

There is a personality in one's style and that is a learned trait, but even if clothes were a choice for one reason or another and that one was never fashion conscious, there are plenty of things that we do based on our observation of others.

The music we listen to was influenced by our first exposures among friends and among family. The food we like is often related to how we were raised. The choices we make in our self expression (be it painting, poetry, drawing, singing, graffiti, sports) were influenced by our early friends and our family (either in rebellion against or because of the fun with). Vampirism or blood fetishes are almost always introduced by someone else. I can think of no person who simply said..."I'd like to start feeding off my friend's or boyfriend's blood...why? no reason...It just seems like fun."

In general, no one goes through life already knowing everything about themselves, secure completely in who they are and where they're going. If they say so, they're lying.

Karnstein, I believe the word you are looking for is mundane... there are also a lot of morons out there that are not mundane. I have always prefered the term tourest, there are people that can acept that there are things outside of their experience and those that can not. The ones that can not except cultures outside of their own, stare and gawk, like tourests... be it goth, vampire, sXe, pornstar, aborigional, or urban cowboy.

Many of us are guilty of not being able to accept that there are people that are mundane. Most, and I'd say nearly all of the goths that I knew from the old days are now mundanes, some of them you wouldn't even be able to drag into a goth club... doesn't nessesarily make them tourests or morons... just mundane.

Meeper I am not usually one to be flatly contradictory, but you are wrong. The way I am is not from copying somebody/something else, my ideas are mine. I'm sure someone has thought of them before, but I have not had contact with them. I often have conversations with like minded people and come to a new understanding, this allows me to roll their ideas around in my head and come to new or better understanding on things. I have not been influenced by the media on my style since I was about 9, and if that influence was still in affect today I would dress, act, and think completely differently. Many of those out there following have originality, but they are too insecure to express it. I have never worried about fitting in and I don't understand why anyone does, so it disgusts me to see people to suppress themselves for this purpose. As far as the whole thing with black, I wear it partly for personal reasons and partly because it helps me be unnoticed. As much as I enjoy watching some of the shows I like, I think that society would be better off if tv hadn't been invented.

it is just like anything it is a fad. People see something cool or interesting they want to be just like it. Then they try for a little bit then they eventually go back to being thierselves.

I wouldn't let it get to you. People follow what others are doing and if your a individual who doesn't follow the fad then you should be proud of yourself.

personally the effects on the youth and population in with it is expected. With the amount of tv the population watches they are very likely to mimic the things they see as you have said. But in turn this wouldn't be so bad if the things they show on tv wasn't crap. They make half the stuff they show completely up. This in turn makes people who mimic nothing more than wanna be's or just fanatics thinking as such.

Well I agree with what a few ppl said already you followed TV influence also.

I never watched those kind of shows when I was younger, I wasn't really allowed too. It came naturally to me growing up. There wasn't any goths in my schools until around High School I saw a few and thought "wow there are others like me" lol. I always been different and I cant explain why, just a born blood sucker lol

Does simple clothing really make the Vamp? I dont think so at all.Ive seen them in all types and colour of clothing.
One thing Ive noticed, is that even if you have an idea that ,perhaps you've never seen or heard of before, you can pretty much bet that somewhere, right around the same timeline, someone else is coming up with it too.

*twitches nose, appears in the forums* (for those that may not have caught the reference.. That was from Bewitched...... Yes there are those that dont know the show) Holy crap how did I get here? I can see the appeal to the television witches, vampires, etc. but does anyone else here see a lacking of common sense? Im not trying to be rude, but television is getting the blame, and I can totally understand it and see why, but there is something that I feel is being over looked...... Common sense..... Which makes me ask myself...... what is wrong with the younger generation that they lack good old fashion common sense....... Are we not doing a good job as parents, or are the kids frying there brains, or what is it? Seriously, I am curious as to what is going on to make this happen the way it is.... When I was a teenager, and I saw the craft..... I sat there and pointed out all the flaws and things they did wrong, and how that wouldnt work and how this was close to the truth and what not and so on and so forth...... Like I said Im sorry Im not trying to be rude or harsh, I am just curious what has happened to the upcoming generation..... (Im not saying that all youth lack common sense, just the ones that believe that things work they way they show them on television) *twitches nose again and disappears*

Unfortunatley in the United States most things are censored, and that goes back to the Puritans who settled here so long ago....We get the censored version of things, and then we beleive that it is real, and when we see how things really are, we start to freak out

after reading much of this thread I have realized that i have fallen into this to adegree and I am hardly a child lol. But at times I find myself useing the "in" terms mostly as its faster and easier to use them to explaine waht i mean.. IE I can say I am a being that lacks energy and my perfered method of getting it is from a person that allows me to draw blood so I may drink it.. or I can say I am a sang vampire that feeds only on willing donors...

I have noticed in other places.. not as much here... the for want of a better term.. wannas. of many kinds trying to convience others they are like what the movies and t protray.. which makes it much harder for those of us that wish to help inform. My version of what i am is not nearly as pretty or thrilling as being Lestat.. in many ways is frightens me for the youth seeking to learn.

I have also noticed that depending on where you live the influence can be alot stronger. I was standing behind to 18 to 23 or so year olds... they say my pent.. and asked if I was a witch.. I smiled and said no.. I am wiccan. They spent the next 20 telling me i know nothing of being wiccian if I am willing to wear a symbol of the devil.. that wiccans try to fight since he is the sorce of all evil... and I should be wearing the symbol of real witches like on charmed... I just kinda blinked slightly and told them polietly that they were mistaken about what wiccans believe .. tried to tell the the difference.. they srated yelling at me etc... and seemed shocked my only responce was to almost drop what I was waiting to pay for cause I was laughhing at them so hard...

shrugs sometimes you can help.. other times they don't want to see how "normal" these things can be

I think it is sad that there is alot of following, and not enough leading.. Alot of these youth today don't have a real clue what being a vampire really is.. Like when I was in High School the kids in my Goth circle where like we suck blood, and we do it everyday... First off blood letting could be very dangerous, and unhealthy if you do not know what you are doing.. but in most cases its all talk, and trying to get your acceptance.. I dunno people need to look at things realistically, and not try to be something they are not.~NFA

I don't doubt that my own "Gothic" appearance has been heavily influenced by the media or even some of the kids that I went to school with, even if I had no direct interaction with them. Whatever the case may be, the clothes, the music, the art... I like it all. I think I've only been called a poser or somesuch what, but I shake it off; I like it as I've liked dark things since my childhood, and I'm comfortable with it.

If someone else is influenced in a similar manner and finds comfort in it, all power to them, just so long as they can discern fantasy from reality and know their limitations. I mean if they take a serious study in witchcraft, even if their influence was a dubious source, and they learn the truths from that, can there really be a problem with it? After all, surely the majority of martial arts practioners got their start watching a Bruce Lee film as a kid.

...

When I was a kid I wanted to be a Transformer.

Being vampiric or gothic shouldnt be the point the point should be TV and HollyWood seem to portray alot of things completely different from the truth.......Im lucky both my daughters have chosen the dark side and im happy,... though if they didnt i would still support them.....considering my eldest one was a homie first and thought she would never change......................

Hollywood does affect the culture and youth but remember that sometimes life is reflected first in hollywood. For example, there was a book on a big boat named Titan that sank before there was a Titanic. As always we need to teach our children to question everything. If they think something is real, do the research and find out. Don't blindly accept anything that anyone tells you.

If u liked vampire shows, check out Forever Knight" they just released the seasons on dvd. its awesome. its from the 90s.

I understand where you are coming from being a teenager in the current time period. everyone considers being a "vampire" as either a trend or something that's totally awesome and they want to run around in circles pretending to be something they're not. i've heard so much bullshit from people. try'n to tell me who i am and who i should be. asking me to "turn" them and ignorant shit like that. i had a group of middle school kids come up to me the other day IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MALL!! asking if i would feed from them. so i said ok and took them outside someplace more quiet and told them to close there eyes... i took bits of energy from each of them while they stupidly sat (i guess waiting for me to bite them)??i dunno. then i just slowly walked away and left them there depressed. the whole time i did this is was angry... because no one understands what life is like for today's youth except today's youth. make any sense?? i know this is off topic completely but i feel it needs to be said... sometimes kids need to turn off the tv, turn off myspace, put down the Anne rice book and go get a life...leave me to handle mine.

ALL types of media ahve an effect on everyone.... tv ads, bill boards, movie traliers, magazines and radio... and well the net is the worst.... children and adulta alike are all in danger of being influenced by the media.... however if you are into something before it becomes "the trend" then ovbiously people are going to ask you what you know.... or how to do it.... or in general think you're a poser...
i know for a fact people in my home town started lookin at me strange after blade and underworld....

I have seen this just recently. this girl comes onto this chat room and starts ranting on how she is a vampire. I confronted her and she at first treated me like i was some moron and that my opinion had no care towards her. Yet then she finally answered.

It has planted its self in the existance of teenagers around myself.

I said I could reccomend some books and the next thing I knew he'd spent over 500 dollars on hexing and summoning bullplop. What these people need to keep in mind is that what they see on tv is FICTION.

EVERY person has been influenced by someone else in their life more than likely by several people since the dawn of humanity. that doesnt mean they dont combine that with their own original thoughts and change it to suit them. whether it comes from the the media, friends, parents or someone they just happened to see on the street that impressed them for some reason.I really think its funny when people argue over who's really goth when the goth movement was brought about by the media. as long as people that imitate things in the media know what's real and what is fantasy I dont see any harm in pretending to be something else. Thats where parental guidence comes in. Sadly that is seriously lack in today's society. To many parents use the tv as a babysitter and dont pay any attention to what the kids are watching. I apologise for rambling and kinda jumping around. one more thing before i end this. Kglitterous mentioned in an earlier post about not trying to study to be a jedi and joked about it being a dead religion but yet you can go to college and study a language "from the future" e.g. Klingon and people wonder why kids have a distorted view of reality.

Everyone has been influenced by something theyve seen on tv or by being around certain people. The problem with youth now is that they cant tell fiction from fact. Everything they see on tv they automatically assume its real w/o even trying to look further into it to find the answer for themselves...

I don't think it is all the youths fault. Hollywood misrepresents vampires, witches, and magik, but at the same time the resources that are there to teach people the truth are harder to come by.

Ignorance has created a lot of glamourized and false perceptions but it is up to the individual to look for the truth and do the research to dispel ones' own ignorance

there is a difference between tv and mental issues too. I didnt think of this before but some children are psychopaths adn you dont even realize it and society's first instinct is to blame it on tv... but in some cases its a mental thing and they need other kinds of help.

psychopathic children are never taken seriously because leagally it can not be diagnosed until ur older.

Television movies, features and other media programmes often set influencing patterns in the younger of today's society. In my opinion I believe this is what influences crime, illusions and produces an altered state of mind. I'm not suggesting for the media industry to be policied more heavily, but parents should take more responsibility for the factors that influence the youth of modern society.

I`m not even trying to call myself a vampire, I just have a very great intrest in them. But I know where your coming from with all these ignorant children who are starting all these stupid things about people who see life to a darker side. This really annoys me as well because I don`t want a stereotype or people to think a certain way about me because of what some people have done in the past.

it sounds to me like you little friends were the real posers
some people that are kust getting into every thing like this think that what is shown on tv will really work there are very few that really ever go to find out what witch craft and vampires truly ever are......
it is like how the schools now have clicks.... when hot topic was all about the big bondge pants every one had them now hottopic sells girl pants as guys pants and every one still has them
people go with what stores and tv does because they think that it is cool you just have to deal with it and put the posers out of your mind
if you know that you are not a poser than that is all that matters

Emerald i have to agree with you there...I never did take the time to think about that factor but yeah parents should take more time to put forth the effort to know whats going on with their kids. To bad most parents work themselves to death so their kids can have what they never had growing up.....For some parents (not all) they forget that spending valuable time or even being interested in what their kids do is important in life, not money or the materialistic things out there. Not all kids or teens are put into the category of not able to discern between fact & fiction on tv. Sorry for not clarifying that earlier on when i posted the 1st time....

The best thing to do is turn the tv off.. and keep it that way.

Don't let pop culture define what you are to you. You'll quickly learn who is worth the time and effort to befriend.

I don't know if most people are complete morons as some have put it, but, From as young as I can rememebr, everyone wanted to belong. You have wanna be ganstas, wanna be jocks, wanna be popular kids and so on. People always say they are special but still like to feel they fit in.

I started liking vampires when I first say Bram Stokers Dracula. Then I started to study up on actual vampire myths and so forth. The sensuality and the secretiviness of it drew me into wanting to know more and making sure no one ever labeled me a wanna be:)

Everyone draws inspiration from the things around them, including TV. Mimicing someone is the highest form of flattery.

Wolfysnightmare: maybe that would be a good topic to start another thread with. Parents I feel need a good kick up the ass to get with it, and tune in today's modern society. LOL, how about parents training class..

I have to agree. I don't see a parent's class as any different than dog obedience. Since most dog trainers will tell you it's not about training the dog, but the owners.

oh that didn't sound good but oh well.
