Do you believe it is possible for a human to be Immortal or live longer then expected (say atleast 150 to 200 years)?
I always wondered if it ever happened and still happening that people live longer then expected and the reason they don't come forward is because of all the press that comes with it. I find it fasinating to question how long a human body can last over years and whether or not the ability to age can be longer.
I have a friend whose family has a good life line and many of his family members lived up to 110 to 120... His uncle is in his 60s but you swear to god he looks more like he is in his early 30s. It is kind of amazing but then again they also eat heathy and do heathy activities and stuff.
What do you think of the possibility of living longer or even living forever? Or do you believe that death is just another part of a new life you will share?
Opinions and new question always opened... This is more then just Immortality but to question whether we already are Immortal as well. :)
i dont think any time soon. but if you think about it how long did people live 5k years ago... compared to 2.5k and 1k and 500 to today. people do live longer then the last generation. so long as their not shot in the head.
maybe one day we will decide that humans dont want to die and start being immortal.
the human mind is a weird place to be. and we dont even use all of it.
Just do not swallow the immortal thing, sorry just can't, ...unless someone out there can prove otherwise!
A long life-line is not hard to believe, it is in my family as well, ..still 100 or 120 years , is not immortality.
Immortality ? could you imagin the chaos, if it was a reality , and attainable by all!
I found that thousands of years ago or even hundreds of years ago that people or some people were able to live longer. The false conception is people live longer today then they did in the past... Not directly say only in the last few hundred years with the existence of polution and dease and overpopulation is what caused many premature deaths.
From what I have read is that some cultures lived a lot longer and some even lived up to 200 or so... It was only based on some historical finds but you never know.
It would be cool just to live longer or atleast long enough to see the world really change.
I don't believe anything can be immortal. Everything wears out, or decays. Given from our limited perspective, some things seem immortal, but I believe a better term would be 'PERPETUAL'. Perpetual things exist for a very long time, but never forever. The earth and the stars seem immortal, yet the stars too are merely perpetual as they too will burn out and the earth we live on is constantly changing, but will end as we know it when our Sun dies.
As for humans living longer, I agree with those who say that thanks to our modern day pollution and industrialized world, we are living shorter lifespans, but are slowly regaining a longer one. If we can change our dependancy on pollution creating technology or processing, then we stand a chance at regaining our perpetuality. :)
Last time I checked, living to 150-200 years is not immortality. I don't believe that it exists at least not in the form of the human body lasting forever. The type of immortality that I believe in is people that reincarnate and remember their past lives.
I have to agree with Jens on this one. I never thought of it in that matter considering I am writing a book about a time that once was and how they created a godly figure that gave life to what we are today (and of course goes into alien lives etc...)... I should have known better lol... Nothing directly lives forever and things eventually fade away.
I do believe if at one time before what we consider God or Gods or whatever there was similar worlds and similar wide open space were life existed and eventually that life faded... Today what we have is just an evolution of what was once existed prior to us.
I hope that make sense and not confussing anyone lol... >
My favourite depiction of immortality would probably be the Elves of Middle-earth, since they generally seemed calm and intune with their surroundings, although instead of flowing along with change they tried to keep things as they were and envied the Gift of Death that Men had.
If we were to achieve something similar to immortality, would we tire of life in the end, as well?
Good point.
I guess in away Death is a given to all life no matter how long they may live. Even the elves eventually find a form of death by sailing to the west.
I think the best way to explain Immortality is through Death. Is Death just another book to life or is Death the final book?
I do not think in this day and age people can live to be 150. Perhaps in the future with advances in the medical industry it will be possible. However, if humans ever achieve a life span that long, we will certainly be battling issues of over population.
Immortality is part of what gives Hollywood Vampires their lure to the general public and sells novels. The bible speaks of people who live hundreds of years, but eventually they all died. Even with our modern increasing technology including cloning body parts, which will in all probability become reality in the future, we will still all face the unknown.
Immortality is the ability to live on in peoples memories long after you have physically left this world....
Immortality, or as far as the only version I have seen is a continued presence of the spirit or mind throughout time. Better known as reincarnation to some.
Immortality is not about who can live longer,it is the one path to live without sin, reward on this path is eternal life.
Humans now in the present do not live longer than the humans in the past. Too many 'unseen' things aid to the early deaths of humans such as pollution in the air, steroids (drugs), etc. Most of this stuff was not around hundreds and hundreds of years ago.
I do believe that you can live much longer than usual, but the process in how you can do that all depends on the person. Everyone is different.

You know, medical science is always trying to push health towards allowing people to live longer and with a better quality of life.
But nature will always rule - with every medical advancement, nature always throws a new twist at us.. whether it be a new virus or a changing virus... or a comet heading for the earth.. whatever.
Immortality is not an attainable goal - everything that lives was designed to be recycled.
As is being discussed in the nature vs. nurture thread, geneics and how you treat yourself effects your longevity...
...as does looking both ways before crossing the street...
Immorality is not for humans. Too much chaos. Human cannot handle such a responsibility. They are too reckless and greedy. Immorality is an impossibility for humans.
Not all humans are reckless and greedy... Some have great power just by purely understanding their mind. Yes in general human nature is reckless and greedy and we have not over come it as a species however as individuals we have.
Seriously just looking at dictionary and choose a word is not the way to study.
Try research from single word chains to chains before you going to use word as human, human, human and human over
and over.There is diffrence between
immortality and mortality before the reward, another hint here.
I don't know about immortality, but I read an article about a person who as of 2006, was 365 years old.....that's a birthdate of 1641. So it's not impossible for a person to live a really freaking long life.
i've heard of ppl living lifespams close to what your asking, and it was i guess kinda common thousands of years ago. but i'm not so sure thats immortality, i mean, part of being alive is the ability to not be alive @ some point in existance. i'm guessing that living past 100 or so would make you feel close to immortal tho, based soley upon what you've seen and lived thru.
Well I believe death is inevitable. I also believe that people are living a lot longer than they used to. I think that modern medicine and modern technology have had a big influence on all of it.
I heard of immortality so many times that I don't know what to say. I believe that it is possible for a human to be immortal but it's just that they aren't born for so many years. Also I noticed that a lycan can die and then become a sort of demon and live forever after their human body dies...you can consider that immortality right?
Immortality is not to live 200 years is to live FOREVER...But scientifically it is immposible. The human body is designed by nature to live not as long as 200 years...Since the skin and many other organs in the human body are getting old from use,and they start to fall apart.Even in so called "perfect" conditions,or "perfect" health(which trully does not exsist),but hypothetically-it won't work, cuz it doesn't depend on health or condition matters...it depends on the organs and their "time of living" ability.People that live a "healthy lifestyle" might live less than people who ate hamburgers all their lives...It really as nothing (almost) to do with it.That is why I don't believe that a HUMAN can live for 200 years, and definetly NOT be immortal.
Well don't take it literally when you think of immortality... That is why I added more to the discussion on longer life.
And yes living healthier does effect your organs and has been proven that certian ways of living has protected how your organs grow and age.
There is a genetic deases in families that can cause premature death no matter how healthy you maybe but living healthier may help live a better and longer life.
I dream of immortality, weather it be in the minds of people or an actual life span. To liver longer than all others would be a gift.
I believe our souls are immortal.Being a nurse and looking at the medical standpoint..huge advances are being made in curing diseases and what not.But the heart, which is a muscle at this point and time can only beat so long .It wears out as do our other organs.Am not saying its not possible in the future however.Me, am still going for reincarnation*grins*
The only way a human can be truly immortal is through their children that way a piece of them is passed on. I know a woman who is 106 years old but that is the oldest one I know I have heard of people living way up in some mountains living to well over a hundred. Scientists have found that there is no reason for people to die because of the regenerative power of the human body and they have yet to find out why after so many years that finally breaks down and people age.
actually it is possible to live forever...there is a mathematician out(forgive me i cant think of his name right now, if this thread is still open i will post it when i get a chance to go home) who has been predicting the speeds of processors and the impact on humanity since the 70s and he has been damn close to the truth and he is predicting that by the year 2030 humanity will have perfected the only way that can make immortality possible, nano technology. if science can make a nano bot well enough humans could live forever. also this bot would alleviate the need to eat thus solving some of the worlds problems...
in my honest view we can be immortal aslong as though we have touched in life remember us in death .. then our souls live on
well last year when i went to a place near the himalayas here in india people told me that there are some sadhus who has beendoing tapasyas for the last 300 years and i also found it in a book pectacular incidents of india about it.
it is possible anything is possible but 200 years or more is unlikely...
Babaji is said to be over a couple of thousand years old, and he has been seen and studied with a few people. There is also, as already mentioned, a person in Africa that is over two hundred. The main reason we as a major society don't manage these years is because of our DNA. Genietics play an important part here. If we can get our DNA to replicate perfectly there will be longer life spans. But for some odd reason it stops doing that. It maybe our food, life style, or even our mental outlook on life itself.
It wasn't until a couple of hundred years ago when old age was forty, it is now over eighty. This was due to medicine and understanding the body. To get to the 120 mark, it's the outlook on life that makes it work. To go beyond that, somehow I'm betting it's something totally different.
hm. well immortality of the soul is definitely possible. but our bodies are limited and we limit them more every day by eating poorly, drinking too much, doing drugs, smoking... you name it. our lifespans are shortened by our actions and habits, and even then we are doomed to die at one point in time or another.
while i believe that some live longer due to better healthy habits (if not killed by something that is genetic to their family like high blood pressure, etc), it is not possible to live forever.
i wouldn't want to live forever while those i loved and cared for passed away lifetime after lifetime. gods, the highlander is a great movie.
I believe in immortalitly, And people living longer then usual. My grandmother lived long time to 98 but she didnt look old she looked young Looked like she was still in her 60's

By immortality is ordinarily understood the doctrine that the human soul will survive death, continuing in the possession of an endless conscious existence. Together with the question of the existence of God, it forms the most momentous issue with which philosophy has to deal. It belongs primarily to rational or metaphysical psychology and the philosophy of religion, though it comes also into contact with other branches of philosophy and some of the natural sciences.
Here go to this link and you will have all the knowledge you need to understand immortality.

In my family it is not uncommon for woman to live into their hundreds. I do not belive, personaly, that anyone can live forever in anything but the soul and mind. In what we do that affect those around us.
Someone in this thread mentioned that one way to live forever is through our children. That is very true. Each generation that comes after us takes something with them.
There was mention of Nano technology.. I am afraid that I have not done nearly enough research on that avenue of thought.. but I will..
This is an interesting topic of discussion..
To live forever.. would you want to? Look at all you would have to relearn just to keep up with the changes in society and the world.. that would be a task in and of itself.. It is one thing to spend your entire time learning but to do so just to live longer? Would it be more trouble then it is worth? To loose those around you who could not accomplish such a task?
Deffinatly some food for thought.
I dont think that people can live forever. Even if we had a choice to, I wouldnt cause I dont want to see my family or anyone else I love die.
I remember being youunger and watching a show about people who should have died from their injuries and such (gun shots, knife wounds, things like that) and survived... even though their bodies were legally dead in some cases. I remember wondering if it was just that simple, all in the matter of the will power, than shouldn't it be possible to live forever, to never let your body break down to the point that it's done.
Children don't know that there are limits in life, and thus are most likely to break through those limits... having no understanding of them... so perhaps those thoughts were real... maybe it is possible, if your will power is strong enough.
i think i had made a thread similar to this before and most of the opinions there doesn't believe that immortality is possible.
but maybe, living longer like in your friend's family, it could be in their genes to have a long span of life....
i agree with jenova, our environment affects our life spans and even though we dont smoke, we still have the tendency to inhale 2nd hand smokes from people who use cigarette beside us. too much industrialization affects our environment and this too affects our health
i dont necessarily believe in immortality persay but i do believe that people can live very long lives over 150 years if thats what was meant for their lives
I dont know if i would want to be or not if you think about it you have to watch so much bad stuff and you would live thow all the world wars and stuff so i just dont think so
I dont think we can live that long thats why we are so fascinated bye it.
Well the longest living relitive I had was 104 years old. He was my great uncle. I hope I live as long.
Even if I could... I would not want to be immortal. The concept of having to watching everyone you love pass away seems torturous.
It would be very nice if we could live to be that old...we would have more of a chance to see different things...however as it was said before on here by someone its not possible and that is why we are fasinated by it.
In Biblical references individuals lived to quite old, Such as Adam living to be over 900 years old, but how did they judge a year should be the question. Moses lived to be 120 years. So as humans progressed their life span became shorter, did you ever wonder why ?
The soul is immortal for those of you who believe in it. However the body has limits and those limits are effected by diet, life style, mental states, physical states, even your DNA...remember there are so many "sleeping" genes that we may never know the possibilities of the human body unless they wake up, and in doing so who knows, one of you kids may be born Blue....don't laugh the gene for the color is present in the human body....Hell humans are much taller in general than they were over a hundred years ago, so maybe as we progress our life cycles will also progress:
"As it was in the beginning so shall it be in the end"
I believe that people can live an unusualy long time like monks and spiritual people who can get in touch with more of there mind and body than the rest of us.
But living on forever...........I don't know but anything's possable.
I do not believe too much in the immortality, thing. I do believe in the living for longer periods pf time, though. For as my mother (Foreverseeking) and I, we have it in our blood lines. We have the past records of living from the years of 100 to 120 years of age. This is not considered immortality! This is considered a healthy set of blood lines, that are known to take good care of themselves! :/
I just do not think it could be possible.
I believe that in a sence you can be immortal, If you leave your mark on the world and are remembered for some accomplishment.
I have no doubt that there is immoprtals, I woould probably kill to be one myself, but on the other hand it couldent be as great as it sounds, because in life there is always ups and downs.
I'm sorry but i think that true immortality is impossibe..the human body isn't built to last much more than 100 years. and even if I could live that long..why would I want to?

Immortality, as in living forever, is just not possible with the limitations of the human body. It's just not going to happen, and all these "immortality" threads are getting worn. However, one can live to be in their early hundreds. My great-grandmother is nearly one hundred and three. As stated by many before myself, environment, diet and such all contribute to one's lifespan. I most likely wont hit that age, as I live too close to L.A. and I breath in all that smog on a day-to-day basis, as well as socially smoke. And quite frankly, I don't want to hit that age.
Immortality (or eternal life) is the concept of living for a potentially infinite, or indeterminate, length of time. Throughout history, many humans have had the desire to live forever. What form an unending or indefinitely-long human life would take, or whether it is even possible, has been the subject of much speculation, fantasy, and debate.
with cloning anything is possible all they need to work on now is a way to transfer memories.
That is very possible.. I know one person that is 110. But I am not so sure that I would to live that long..Seeing her makes me think about it.. She is so small and it is truly sad.
lol not without dieing ( which makes no sense at all ) now does it??
I believe my soul is immortal, but not my body. I don't think there really will ever be a way to be completely immortal. Only slow down death and decay. After all, everything decays...
My paternal great-grandmother lived to be 106 and my maternal great-grandmother was 105. Everyone was passed ther 90s (and some 100s) in my family when they died in the last few generations except for 2 (still elderly) that died of cancer. These people lived from the 1880s to the 1980s- if they could do it then- imagine what this generation with modern medicine in my family can do if we live healthy?
I beileve that the soul of all creature make them immortal in a way.. the body may die but the soul will live on forever......even after the destruction of this planet. they will live on in the afterlife in the next plane
Immortality seems like an oxymoron to me. I'm not saying there are people/creatures who haven't lived for centuries, but I'm not saying there are. It really hasn't been proven either way. But, if you think about it, even if you live for hundreds and hundreds of years, you're going to die at some point. That rules our immortality.
it has to be possible for someone to be immortal or else mortality would be unexplainable. there has to be a control and variable in everything that is how life works
The length of time that a soul stays with one body varies from soul to soul just as hair, eye and skin color vary. The women in my diect bloodline usually live into their late nineties/early hundreds but the men usually pass on in thier late fiftys/early sixty's. But the soul is always reborn into a new body unless of cource they commit such evil deeds that the balance of nature can't accept them. Then the soul in destroyed.
to this day people have searched for the elixer of youth. I am unsure of the occurance of living through the age of 200. The decrease in health and will-power would have or could have kicked in. But there could always be a possibility.
Its only the body that dies off. Just like the life of a vampire. The body dies off but the mind keeps at work and the youth stays the same in appearances.
In humans it is the body that dies, not the mind, But health functions and the body that dies off.
I agrree once more with NocturnisOrchid
on this the soul is immortal and thus reincarnation is immortality if you will...
I know that ones body dies as has been stated time after time..The body can only withstand so much and ones heart can only beat so long..
But our minds and souls go on forever be it to heaven or hell for those who do not believe in the reincarnation of the soul, or to be born into another body or creature in another time..
Don't buy it. Sorry. I can see a person lasting a little over 100 years, but after a while it all goes down the tubes. We can't all be Cher. In another thread, someone gave the reason as to why we age... something about something we breath in? Either way, if what they said was true then with every breath we take we begin to die. The body is not meant to live forever. As NO said, the soul is immortal.
not shure if i would want to. to see all my loved ones and family die time and time again while i carried on.. it would be depressing
Taking Jens' thoughts one step further, like Cerberos scratched it yet:
Do we really want to be immortal?
Heck, what if our bodys do not wear out, but our minds still do?
(se also the thread about vampire fears)
I am not talking about senile old people but really cracking after experiencing so much than more we actually do.
Would this really be a goal or is it true, that without the will to live the body dies too?
Heck, I do not want to be immortal, not really.. not in this life.
death to me is a new beginning... reincarnation. I certainly hope I am not stuck in this body forever.....
To live forever would break your heart, all you love and know would turn to dust in your shadow
with the way people are ruening the earth n polluting its highly immpossible for people to live long lives
I wouldn't want to live forever.
Now, a nice, long life could be fun. But forever?
I could see maybe wanting to live a couple of centuries. after that I'd be too far out of my element.
"Internet? you mean you don't have it implanted in your head yet? Old fogie!"
Physically, no, I can't see the human body being able to sustain itself forever.
Energetically, definitely, I believe that patterns can be 'recycled' back through the reincarnation process.
Longevity is a much more plausible idea though. If a sufficiently skilled energy worker were to regulate the energy passed through their system, optimising the cellular cycle, then it isn't beyond the capability to extend the usability of the structure.
This may also lead to the impression of an immortal being, if they lived for a long time in a region where others are short-lived.
But, the structure of the mind would have to be extremely adaptable and resistent to dementia, otherwise, whats the point?
It may be possible in the future, but as for today's age..no. human bodies aren't buiolt to last. unfortunately...
I believe everyone lives forever in the form if reincarnation. For when we die its only a mere form of sleep. Then we wake up and are born a new.
I believe that your soul lives forever, so does it truly matter if the shell that we temporarily use lives on???
even with the introduction of nano technology I don't think humans will ever live forever except by way of there progeny
i think it is possible scientificaly speaking but for myself id say i dont really want to live that long unless i had the way of my ansestry but that wont happen so id rather die in my 70 and be young and pretty forever lol
i don't think we can in this day and age. we depend so much on drugs, fitness and medication that our bodies have degraded so much from the past.
in the past it was all natural medication etc, as such our bodies were not decaying to the point they r now and i believe thats why with each generation we seem to be dying younger.....
accordning to some scientists by the year 2050 the average life span will be around 200- 5000 years... yes 5 thousand.... the agg group in the present that sits ar 50+ will be the last generation to die so young... new medical advances have proved that this is infact possible.... my question is.... where the hell are we all going to live?
I asked this question to a scientist and odly enough his answer was... well not on earth of course.... we have already skrewed this one up enough.... we are moving to mars..... yeah I dont know if we should trust that one.... but hey it is somethin to think about
dont think you can be immortal. its because they have a healthy lifestyle
I dont believe in immortality... We are born to love then to die...its as simple as that
life is nothing if it lasts forever
Immortality No.
We are met to Live, Love, And Die.
Vampires Or Not.
I dont thing so... Immortality and living forever with the way alot of ppls health is and the way the generations take care of them selfs... alll the desieses and so on... make it very hard to live a long life... im my family everyone has seemed to pass on ver young... anywhere from there 30s to thier late 70... Now if someone was to be in great health and really take care of them selves i could see 120 or so but very rare... I do believe how ever our souls go on and yes even have many lifes and can remeber our passed lifes... but to sit here and really think about why would one want to live for ever... I worked with alot of older clients and I saw the pain and heartach they went throw... I would never what that!
For now, a person cannot live forever, but I beleive that if they have left their mark then they will not truly die and be immortal as long as people remmember them.
But life needs death, without death there can be no life just like without pain there cannot be pleasure.
I agree with Raveana. I know this cause My soul is 500 years old. And i remember everything thing that i did in my past.
I believe it exists spiritually. We live forever through our souls.
i agree with lucky one on this. i also think that we have the ability to live past 100 years if we take care of our bodies, and mental health. but eventually out bodies will be too old.
