Last night I was thinking about vampyres and how people think that they cant come out during the day. The moon shines by reflecting sunlight, so would they only be able to come out on the nights of the new moon?
I'd assume you're talking about the "hollywood" vamps. Well no, according to hollywood they can't come out in the daylight, but night, anytime of night would be fine for me.
As for us real living vamps. Yeah, we can come into daylight, but me myself, I'd rather not just cause I don't like bright light very much and prefer the nightlife.
Well, the tradition beliefs of vampyres that have been around for a while also refer that vampyres can not walk in sunlight.
And some people today still believe that vampyres can not walk in sunlight.
I think it a hollywood created myth. I think they could come out at day or night.. I think most prefer night because its easier to be unseen.
the light that is reflected from the moon is to weak to do any damage to real or fictional vampires because the surface of the moon is not smooth or flat therefore it diffuses the light from the sun
Like I had said, us "real" vampires can come out during the day. We just prefer the night as it's more "natural" for us. I don't like going out in the day unless I really have to. I tend to burn easy and get dizzy and feel sick if I'm in direct sunlight for too long. I tend to wear sunglasses whenever I'm out and about.
The "hollywood" vampires are most commonly associated with only being able to come out at night. Which helps to feed the myths about how vampires are.
I so hate hollywood.
Absolutely agree with MaxRage... I prefer the night... but since i have to work i hide from the sun anyways...
the sun stings my eyes and damages my skin big time... I´m extremely pale and i can´t resist the sunlight... I love the night and the moonlight... anyway i feel more receptive and sharp at night...
That's another myth that Hollywood has made up.
I can go out in the daytime, but I prefer the night more.
I really don't get sunburn when it is bright enough.
I just love the night for some reason. It just makes a person feel good.
I know that for me it is hard during day, but I do come out, even if my skin hurts and itshes so much, the sun also can make me a sun burn in less then 15 minutes, and not light one a painfull one.
actually the myth predates hollywood because no one ever reported seeing a vampire in the day time so it was assumed they could only come out at night. add to that light is usually considered pure and good while darkness is considered tainted and evil
I personally prefer Stephenie Meyers view of vampires (or for all you readers out there, she's the authoress of the Twilight series), they CAN come into the light however some difference in the skin attract undue attention to them so therefore they have a tendancy to remain out of the light.
..an interesting thread. Me? Photosensitive, so I just plain abhore it.
i call it paranoiya. that is something hollywood have maded all to belive.
I'm sure alot of it has to do with al of the Hollywood fluffy bunny type BS. The Moon is also a much softer light in comparison to the Sun. Even though the Moon does reflect the Sun it at a muchlower percentage.
there are skin conditions werepeople are achully allergic tot he sun, but, hollywood is just looking for a quick buck.
I believe it is a metaphorical based belief turned rumor as far as that goes. Day = light, holy, good health, life...Night = darkness, evil, sickness, death, etc. So naturally, a creature of the night could not live in the daylight on that school of thought. Another school of thought is, being a creature of the night....like owls, wolves, most felines, and other nightly predators...they hunt, move, eat, etc...mostly at night, and would be too exhausted in the day to do anything.
It is merely a fantasy created by authors and directors.
sunlight is another fable that hollywood and writers endulge in for the primary evil to vampires. as we go forth each day and work and do daily routines we do not explode into a puff of smoke
Seems to me like everyone said the same thing, almost. I have to agree, that is just something hollywood cooked up.
But the theory that vampyres can not walk in sunlight existed way before hollywood. So it is not a hollywood idea.
I believe that vampyres can walk in sunlight it just bothers me how everybody keeps saying that this is all hollywood. The ideas did not come from hollywood. They came from many different cultures that existed way before hollywood was even thought of.
ok, but if not for hollywood, almost noone would belive this non-sense bout sunlight, grant, my eyes are sensitive to light...but, i woutn die from it like holy wood keeps saying
I know that most people only know about stuff such as that because of hollywood I just wanted to point out that it was not hollywood who came up with these ideas
Well if I remember it correctaly the reason the myth of the vampire not being able to come out in the daylight was something to do with the sun being Gods light and as vampires are evil etc. But remember at the time the vampire myths started they did not know why the moon shone as we do now.
Now as for us living vampires
well I CAN go out in the daylight I just try not to. I can put on 50 SPF and like 5min later I am burning so its kinda a waste. I am a red head with the fair skin that goes with it. My eyes will sting and burn even with sunglasses. I also actaully have it on my medical records that I am allergic to the sun. My doc did not believe how sensitive I am so went out and watched me get sick and dizzy and gave in and put it in my file.
Maybe vampires can not come out into the sun because it is too bright of a light daytime is a lot brighter than nightime, so the light itself probably does something...
perhaps they eyes are too sensitive to light so they prefer to only come out at night when light is at its minimal
First off, any and all who call themselves "real vampires" need to use discression when speaking as such. Only lifers, roleplayers, and children of the same call out as they think they are.
As sunlight contains ultra v, we may all get certain bloches, headaches or whathaveyou, this is normal. The moon has little if anything to do with the sun aside from the fact that the sun reflects from it. Make as many excuses as you wish.
I personally am tired throughout the day, until the early night hours, but this may be from the fact that I work graveyard. All of it aside from being hollywood dramatics, is mostly based off old fashion gothic novela, Bram Stoker, and John Palidori Classics.
Natural or born, sunlight effects each individual seperatly. It may be group hypnosis and or hysteria that this happens to those who think they are.
When you are "awakened", you get a certain awareness for more things regarding your "nature". You are always born with this fact. You may never be "turned" by anyone, this is NOT cause. No one is ever "turned". It is and always has been a hereditary affliction.
I may not be an authority figure on this subject, but I know my way around this area. Feel free to rebuttle, rebuke, reiterate, conjecture, argue, or whathaveyou, do what you will. Just take in mind, that if you are who you are, than you know what I say is valid.
some people can not come into the sun due to a medical condition but that has nothing to do with Vampires. Holy wood did that so the could create evil that would only scare kids at night.
well for me the sun doesn't kill me but it does hurt my eyes so bad i always wear my sunglasse's when i'm outside even if im not looking directly at the sun
well sun hurts everyones eyes nomatter of what you may be. The sun is dangerous of many reasons and is for sure the single thing that is behind most cancer victims.
Shouldnt go by what hollywood says about the "vampires" its fiction some good some bad but as for the sun hurting someones eyes its clinically proven that lighter color eyes are more sustible(sp) to eye damage due to the sun.
SSome possibilities, vampyres were the enemy of man, strong where man was not so the night cycle would suit them as that is when man is at his weakest.
Or maybe it is racist, having very pale skin means they would burn easier, a subtle attack on the irish?
The myths that do state that Vampires cannot walk in the day can be described as thus:
Vampires are creatures of darkness and evil, therefore cannot walk during the day lest they be discoverd, and/or destroyed by the light or good. (darkness cannot exist in the presence of light)
As for the moon I think the question is taking the spirit of the myth to literally.
i truly believe to fully understand the powers of the sun and moon, and the power of both, u really should obtain info from a person who writes about it,,,,,,,,then proceed my dear
I believe that vampires can go out into the sunlight, but prefer the darkness.
Vampires are nocturnal in nature. Hollywood just made up the myth that vampires can't go out in daylight for their story dramatics. Thats just my observation though.
I think that things have changed and they can come out even if it is light or dark outside...the sun would hurt more though.
An aversion to sunlight is just made up by authors and directors the world over..to give a boost to their stories..everyone knows this.
too many people during the ady everything most interesting happens at night. daylight does not hurt but i do prefer the night.
I feel that a lot of vampires are not affected by the light.
Hollywood or history...I don't care...the idea that the vampire cannot go into the sun is simply classic. Whether people believe it or not, there are conditions in which people are very sensitive to sunlight. So, could a vamp be sensitive enough to want to avoid the direct light? Absolutely. Hell, there is a reason they use UV light in laboratories to dry clean areas...UV is known to destroy DNA.
I believe that you also have to look at the development of the peoples who started the myths, to these people thousands of years ago there were very real dangers that existed in the night, monsters and demons were always just outside the campfire light.
The Real Vampyres
They are pretty much normal people with a type of energy issue. The subtle body was damaged and in this it draws strength from the physical body. Well anyways, they do not suffer from a light issue, peraps some have a sensitivty to it, but nothing more.
as for the Game and holly wood stuff, its all about the creator.
vampires are a lifestyle... humanity has been small- minded and they we have been forced into the shadows... no one has all of the answers for the lifestyle... but please do not confuse us with myth...
There is an actual disease called Porphyria, in which people have a severe allergic reaction to sunlight, causing burns and abrasions. As for the link to the myth of actual vampires and sunlight, im not sure.
I have pale blue eyes, so naturally sunlight hurts, especially in winter when its always so low on the horizon. Vampires in stores is made up, as is most things, but it must have a root explination somewhere.
Good point to the person who made this up.. maybe it's because of two different brightnesses... or the stories are untrue of the sunlight hurting vamps..
This is only in movies. I know there are people with a disease where they can't go out in the sun. But thats it.
Everyone that I have known that said they were a real vampire could go out during the day. Most of them did not like to but they could. I have never thought about the light reflecting off the moon before.
LIke many others have said here it is complete and utter fiction...
So you you burn easily if you stay out in the sun to long...or you are literally allergic to sunglight...there are medical explanations for that kind of thing it by no means you are a Vampire.
Even fictionally speaking, what about vampires made in the land of the midnight sun? They'd really have a hard time.
i too prefer the nocturnal times. but ill have to say, i dont feel "right" when the moon is full. it kinda "eeks" me out.
vampires only cant come out in the movies.... everyone knows that. we dont want everyone to know about all our powers
I think the whole sunlight thing is a myth. It was made up to make people who are afraid of vampires feel safer. If vampires could only come out in the night, then people who were afraid would feel safe in the day. Hollywood just picked up on this and carried it on. Although in movies like Blade, they are changing that. So maybe soon the daylight thing will go away. I think a real vampire could go out whenever they wanted with no harm done. They may prefer the night but it doesnt mean they can't go out in daylight.
i personally don't like the sun it burns my eyes and it's true that vampires can't go in the day light i studided up on them
vampires sunlight aint this all mytholgy i think soo vampires dont excist they are
fictional creatures created by someone imagination but again as i say many time before its nice to live in a phantasy realm
The night is the time of evil, when all the creatures come out to play. Stoker used the sunlight aspect in Dracula and Hollywood picked up the idea and ran with it. They helped to create the modern mythology from bits and pieces of the old legends.
Well, it all depends on who you ask. Those apart of the Sanguinarium might tell you that living Vampyrism isn't a life style but an actual affliction of the soul. While others will say yes it is a life style.
As for the sun, yes there are real allergies to it. Which is a real medical condition.
Those with very light eyes also have issue with the sun, since it bothers their eyes, the medical explination for this I have no idea what it is nor will I look it up at this moment, but it shouldn't be hard to find.

even if the moon reflects sunlight, i would think it isnt direct sunlight, and it isnt nearly as bright. so it wouldnt matter... at least on the "holly wood vamp" side of things.
Who knows, it all depends. Magic no it wouldn't while science aspect then yes it would.
It depends on whose folklore you ascribe to. Some claim the moon has no effect or even promotes vampirism.
THe imagination of Hollywood can be fun..........I would have to think since most Vampires are night creatures as a rule , they then would be more adapted for the living in a low light enviorment. That does not mean they cannot exsist during the daylight hours , they just prehaps prefer the night or are more sensitive to the heat and the sun.
Bramstockers Dracula, he can walk around in the day without issues. Same with the Leage of Extrodinary Gentlmen, the woman who is a vampire within the movie could do the same, be out in the light without issues.
(Sorry about the spelling)

A good point to bring up in this would be those with an illness that causes you not to be able to spend time in the direct sunlight. If it was around back when the vampire myths started to generate(before Hollywood) then it could be a good reason why that aspect was brought into myths. Considering during that time period people with any illness was shunned this could have made it worse.
Many of the vampires of legend and myth also did not like the sunlight, it frazzled them (especially those that shed their skin)
Many of the folks who were called 'vampire' at the time are now explained by science as suffering from Erythropoietic Porphyria (Gunther's disease) and other types - amongst a lit of really unpleasant symptoms they get :
In some forms of porphyria, accumulated heme precursors excreted in the urine may cause various changes in color, after exposure to sunlight, to a dark reddish or dark brown color. Even a purple hue or pink urine may be seen. Heme precursors may also accumulate in the teeth and fingernails, giving them a reddish appearance
if they can come out in the day they probly just use the night for hunting.
ah, but when sunlight is reflected off the moon's surface, it becomes polarised, and loses some of it's spectrum, so it's not true sunlight anymore.
Hollywood created the "vampyres can't come out in the day rule". We can come out in the day but were just a little les powerfull, we certaintly don't die!
i didn't know hollywood was in germany - i always thought it was in america. shows what i know!
Who ever is talking as if they are some undead god, please understand that how you speak and prosent yourself as of right then makes you sound rather childish.
Hollywood didn't make up such facts, it was done through years and years of supersition and Myths in regards to creatures similiar to Vampires or are Vampires.
- Sin
i believe vampires may come out during the day, but they are powerless until night. very good question though :)
For as long as Vampires have been mentioned, they have never been able to walk in day light. Thats one thing throughout history thats always been repetative, that they turn to "dust" in the sun.
& I think they'd be fine at any time of night, it's not "direct" sunlight...
I personally believe that the UV light from the sun is what does the damage, but it is possible for Vampires to be out during the daytime hours.
Of course they can come out during the day. Not being able to is just a made up Hollywood myth.
Actually, it's not just a made up "Hollywood" myth.
The legend that Vampires can only come out at night has been around waaaaay before "Hollywood" was even imagined.
holleywood strikes again! i see lol in truth the sun has little to no effect on us
as long as there is no sunlight I'm sure they can come out in any moon.
Full sunlight is powerful. Alot of UV rays. Moonlight isn't harmful. There are diseases of the blood where people can't go out in sunlight. Even chicken pox you are supposed to stay out of it for you know. They don't ever say stay out of the moonlight. Yea!
Am I the only one who finds it annoying that people give hollywood full credit for the vampyres and sunlight myth? It existed way before hollywood was even thought up.......
since we are talking about modern vampires here... the ones that work during the day ... most of them are forced to be in the daylight... of course not exposed to direct sun... (not because they may die) because of how sensitive we can be...
i'm assuming you ment to type full moon in there. the reason they are uneffected by sun light reflected of the moon is....just that. its reflected light. no were near as intense as direct sun light. the reflected light from the moon has had a large portion of the UV and other light and radiation absorbed by the moons surface. which is also why humans dont get sunburned by moonlight. and why the moon light doesnt bother your eyes as much as sunlight.
but thats just my educated guess at the question
I think as long as its dark it doesn't matter, they could possibly even come out during an eclipse, I don't know but it sounds good anyway. lol
I think that whole coming out during the day thing is all hollywood i think there skin might be sensitive to the sunlight but nothing like a speck can kill them
The whole thing about vampires and light is made up by hollywood to make better pictures
I think vampires avoid the sun because it causes the skin to age ... and the whole point is remaining young and beautiful ... the whole can't be in the sun is just an exajeration
I'm sure Vampires can go out whenever they want. They just choose not to go out so much during the day.
