Please this thread is about knowing and facts, not about judging and flaming.
Do not post judgmental comment or idiotic post that could offend please, post to mention facts or opinion but always with respect.

Now that this is said here is my hypothesis and also what I have notice with time.

Is the paranormal activity and ability related to the IQ of a person?
I mean many will say both extreme, genius and ppl with a lower IQ then normal (no offense here please just a question and fact) seems to be more in capabilities and abilities of the paranormal, they seem to be some sort of relation between extremes in IQ and the paranormal world.
What do you think? Did you notice it?
For example, I know that a child with a lower IQ, consider disadvantage to the human norm, can see and make contact with paranormal entities easier then normal ppl.
Also ppl who are genius say they ear voices from beyond.

So do you think there is a link between the two?
between the IQ of a person and their abilities?

Please again I mean no disrespect, only seeking knowledge and opinion with respect

The relationship that you are seeking is directly related to each other. Both are aspect of the sixth chakra or third eye. On one side the chakra controls the intellect, and the other, physic abilities. One reason why thinking too much will hinder the six sense.

Those with the brains "know" there is more out there and therefore more open to it. Those that have the child still in them just accept this as normal and do not judge it.

Very interesting, I have never thought about it before, but I suppose people with lower IQ scores could match the same as children in paranormal testing. With children, they haven't put up the blockers yet, they haven't been told repeatedly "there's no such thing..." to them its all real, every shadow that moves, every "imaginary" friend who answers back.

It makes complete sense to me that there would be a link. Slower people tend to think like children and children are more apt to see and feel things that the average adult would not.

I think it would not be the I.Q. of the individual, as I know many with higher I.Q's who have these abilities as well as lower level I.Q's.

I would think it deals more with the reseptors of the minds eye, example being a child not knowing adult content or thought would see ghosts as their reseptors have not been shall we say, desensitized. As most adults are desensitized, they see less then what children do.

Lower level I.Q's seem to be more sensitized since they do have trouble catching on with certain situations. But those of higher levels tend to over think and over analyze said situations too much drawing speculation rather than seeing what is actually there.

Personally I think it has more to do with the sense, whether or not one has been desensitized.

IQ is a gauge of the normal concept of brain ability. As noted before, children (who may have very high IQ's and those who are considered challenged can be much closer to the paranormal than adults regardless of their regestered IQ.

I've found that people with higher and lower than average IQ scores do tend to be more open to the paranormal. It doesn't mean that they have paranormal abilities, just that they are more open to it.

Working in psychiatry for many years I have had the pleasure of meeting many adults and children who have claimed to have paranormal abilities. I have found no correlation between IQ and paranormal abilities.

I think as we grow older we start becoming 'logoical' aliens are not logical, they do not meet our norm, so anything paranormal is blocked out. In other words we walk around blindfolded. Kids are not blindfolded, to them anything is possible. They will see or hear, and then pay attention to it, rather than write it off as 'just a cat' or 'just the wind'. People with the higher intelligence, are usually so because of their inquisitive nature, they want to learn and to know. Also scientists and such are taught to think outside the square, so again they are not blindfolded.

From what I have noticed I believe it to be a case not so much IQ altho that is part of it, but of logic. ( for I have known people with high IQ that logic seemed a totally alien idea) It has seemed to me that people that actually think about it and read a bit and maybe talk to reliable people and such start to see that there has to be more to this than they know...and therefor open themselves to seeing and understanding. ( and not talking themselves out of what they saw or sensed) On the flip side perhaps people with lower IQ simply accept what other have to fight to get back to understanding?

I agree with Psyche. individuals whom I have met with above-normal I.Q's were more open-minded than those with an average I.Q. I think, however, that it is more how a person is raised, and their religious preference. Many believe that ghosts and spirits, psychic ability and telekinisis are products of the devil, or evil in nature.

I actually disagree. My personal opinion is that people with supernally high IQ's would be less likely to be a) open to the paranormal, and b) practitioners of the paranormal. This would be mainly due to the logic inherant in the higher IQ ranges. This link shows some characteristics inherant in highly gifted people which includes qualities such as:

  • A need for precision in thinking and expression - this goes against the very grain of exploring the occult/paranormal simply because very rarely is there precision involved. How do you precisely record a ghost? An alien encounter? A spell?

  • A need for the world to be logical and fair - there is little logic involved in the supernatural. Nor fairness. This concept would be exceedingly difficult for the highly gifted to come to terms with.

Of course there are many qualities in that list which would also lend themselves to greater appreciation of the paranormal as well. I believe that ultimately there is no actual link between IQ and paranormal abilities. It is all in the attitude and abilities inherent in the person regardless of their IQ.

I don't think having a high IQ means you are more susceptible to paranormal activity. I think it has more to do with a person's sensibility......... there's another word I was looking for, but can't think of it right now, too early in the morning, heh.

Afterall, a child's IQ is far less than an adults, yet they are more susceptible to paranormal activity than adults are.

zodiak, if you got nothing interesting to say then dont post its anyoing.

Now that said:

Now as for the one with hight IQ, I notice that some genius, dont actually think, their brain goes so fast that it simply makes them see things that normal ppl dont see, I know a person from the Mesa (sorry if I spell it wrong, its was 2 years go, its a group of genuis, you can even test to see your IQ with them) who was actually seing things like I was, he could see spirits and ear them at times, that mostly why his family who refuse to accept his "gift" had put him in a mental institute for a while hoping it would go away.

Showing how much those who are gifted are judge and hurt alot.

Ok my 2 cents.. i do not think they are related.. i think eeryone is born with the ability and/or intuition. As we grow up in life we gain new abilities and practice those while others go un nutured.. hence us loosing the ability by the time we become adults..
I was lucky enough to have a family that supported and help nuture all my abilities, therefore i still continue to grow

Indeed the more you know it does have some perspective, but also genuisu are known to never take for granted their knwoledge they always seek it therefore will seek to know more aobut it creating a desire to seek even towards the paranormal, they wills eek to knwo why and hwo come this or that happened or occured and wheat is it leading to, as the average IQ would simply ether ignore it ro deny it, the genuis wills eek firther since his mind is a constant question mode, asfor th lwoe IQ they are seekign simly cause it is natural for them to seek it us pleasent and fun.

Well, I beleive IQ can help in developing abillities, since the person is certanly more perceptive of its surrondings, but it all depends, is this person a mathematician, or a swimmer, or trying to achive on the paranormal field?

Proly it wouldnt even notice things, if those are not of its interest?

I belive all is in the character of a person, whether it has high IQ or normal, or below.

It is about orientation, about establishing one idea, and following it.

I guess, it is hard to find an orientation and establish the idea, if a person is not so perceptive, not so smart?

Surely, it gives to the clarity, the higher IQ, but than again, if one doesnt know how to use it, is equaly useless.

All children...no matter their mental faculties have the ability to see and hear things adults do not...its a chemical thing.Once a person hits puberty...hormones flood the brain...cutting off the parts that "see" things that adults tend to shun or refuse to see. Some adults brains do not have this chemical...so they tend to see and hear things others can't.

Basicly it would be chemicla to sense or not paranormal activity? No offence here at all, but ti does rise a point and make some sense, I eman lower IQ have a different chemical balance the the average IQ and so does the hight IQ, so maybe thats the key?

Since their brian have different chemical balance then their IQ is affected, menaing some how were maybe lower IQ or higher IQ then the average but we never explored it?

This is just a theory but it has some logic in it.

CryingMist, I think you've hit the nail on the head with that last post. Chemical imbalance or perhaps a better ratio of neccessary chemicals most likely does contribute to "paranormal" activities.

There may be a relation to the "nature of majick" posted by Oceanne, as well.

That's true. We could experiment. The first step being to discuss the parameters - standard testing, consider what basic activities are considered "paranormal" without getting to advanced, and then obtain medical assistance and lab use (much more difficult than the first two things).

It would require quite a bit of money to find out.

THere could very well be a link between the two. Perhaps it could be that more intelligence is required to think more abstractly, and thereby have an inate understanding of them.

It would require someone of intelligence to understand some of the intricacies of what is involved with paranormal abilities.

In not all cases, though is there a requirement for higher education involved, and some confuse the two. Intelligence is the ability to learn, not what you have already learned. It is a test, so to speak of your ability to handle such things as new input, or new ideas. Your ability to grasp a new situation, and figure out the best way to handle it.

Edgar Cayce was such a person. He had little formal education, was a minister in a small church, yet displayed such a wealth of talent that His work goes on today through the Edgar Cayce Foundation, and the Association of Research and Enlightenment.

So, like every other ability, it seems somewhat well dispersed throughout the main of society, favoring neither the rich or the poor, the well educated, or the illiterate. Sort of an equal opertunity thing.

My belief is that We all have inherent abilities. Some just never develope, or try to develope them. Like muscles, you must exercise them if they are to become stronger.

Those with a higher IQ or even those with a stronger education, are often able to think of more logical reasons behind what many consider paranormal. I often think that the amount of truly paranormal occurrences are far less than the amount reported or discussed in most cases. There are those who are quick to label something paranormal and magical. While I don't doubt the possibility of paranormal phenomena, I am far more skeptical when first confronted with a story of such things.

Dreams are not always premonitions. Noises in the house aren't always ghosts. Blurry lights on photographs aren't always spirits caught on film. Someone who gets a 'high' from blood drinking or blood play is certainly not always a vampire gaining 'energy' from such an interaction. The sooner we all learn to accept the rarity of a truly paranormal event, the sooner we can learn more about what might be metaphysical in nature without getting distracted by wild conclusions for everyday happenings.

That being said, I think those with a lower IQ or ability to grasp logic, are more prone to calling a normal event paranormal and therefore more likely to have stories of strange and paranormal visions, powers and phenomena.

I wholeheartedly agree with Felix's angle on this....
And Cryingmist, I believe it's not a matter that those with lower IQ tend to make things up on purpose, but simply that their education, what they have learned, or more appropriately what they haven't, limits their abilities to reason rationally; thereby opening the doors to explanations rooted in what could be deemed fantastical or superstitious.
This isn't done intentionally , they are merely acting on what their level of reason or intelligence allows....

Well coming from my point of view, I do believe that there is a connection. Especially with children. It has been noted repeatably that children with disabilities are more in tuned with things. They seem to be able to better grasp abilities then other children. I found this site to have a lot of good things in on this subject. http://axislumina.org/_wsn/page4.html

people with a higher IQ usually spoend more time learning facts and finding out how things work, they would be less likely to be receptive to something without logical reasoning

IQ and paranormal abilties..link or not?

a/ I would say that talking about paranormal activities is refering to an almost infinite variety of events that might occur which nature or source cannot be fully understood or explained. Things that can be done through IQ such as suggesting certain types of behavior in other people would not fit into the paranormal activity, because the result is already known which is the manipulation. There must be other types of paranormal activity that are solely based on random picking by nature. Telepathy, Telequinesis, etc... are very complex topics and obviously cannot be fully understood. Maybe abilities like telepathy could be reached after a certain intense training by a group of people. But then again... theres people who have it uncalled. Im not sure about facts on Telequinesis.

as one mention earleir yes some who have a lwoer IQ tend to be more with a child's ehart and mind so more of tune to be touch by the energy or createus of the paranaormal realm, as for higher Iq well I bleeive they will seek it, maybe with logic but still seek it to try and know it more and know the reasons behind its presence.

Einstein said, that true intelligence is knowing what you know, and also knowing what you don't know...It is true there are some very smart people that are also closed minded...However, true intelligent people know they do not know everything and remain open minded to the paranormal.

Children on the other hand remain open to the possibilities.. Prehaps a persons paranormal abilities are not so much tied to their IQ, as it is tied to their open mindedness.

I do not think it has any merit. I have researched paranormal abilities. Many people can tap into parts of their brain which is normally not used. I don't think they realize that they have done so, but do experience abilities that "normal" persons do not.

I worked in special education for 8 years. During this time I was priviledged to work with all levels of the arena.

It is my opinion that children with a lesser IQ are more likely to enjoy the thrill and mystery of the paranormal. These children are more likely to express an interest in a family ghost story than the Civil War. The story is familiar and brings a thrill of rememberence when recounted.

I am not sure that I believe there is a relationship between IQ and experiencing paranormal activity. I believe it is a person's ability to sense energy shifts in thier environment that leads to experiencing paranormal activity.

I don't know if its the IQ which is linked,I think it's more of using a section of the brain more.

For example I am good in languages and discussions but then I'm ignorant in mathematical and scientific subjects.

However I had some paranormal expiriences, so maybe I use a certain part of the brain more than the other, and the other part of my brain gets ignored?

Bah..maybe.

there is studied going on, sadly its all in french so, I dont know if I can find the english version of it, so there is sort of evidence that are explore.

I think what was mention about the fact the one part fo the brain being less active, lower IQ, the other part, the one open to paranormal and extrasnesorial senses then have more space to expend and evolve, its the some for higher IQ, they are using more of their brain and by that the brain continues to seek more and more knowledge and things, creating an opening to the paranormal and extrasensorial perception, as it is in a constant growth and constant quest.

This is an interesting post. I suppose that if you think about it then it is true. The people with the lower IQ perhaps question less about the ability for the paranormal to exist and communicate while the people with higher IQs have the potential to understand it fully. Given I am only expressing my opinion but it makes sense to me. I have only ever had contact with the paranormal while I was still an infant but after that it subsided. I cant explain it but hopefully someone can...

Something I have found really interesting with children is the invisible friend phenomenon. I had one as a child and I know she was incredibly real to me with independent thought. Perhaps this is a sign of the supernatural at work?

It is possible that as children we do not understand the limits logic puts on us and therefore we can see the unseen.

well from what i've been gathering from the previous posts, we can probably make a safe assumption that it does have to do with how the individuals brain is "wired" and what the chamical balance is like in it. and then add in how the person was raised and how they percive the world. therefore eliminating IQ from the equation......
WTF was that, wow did that ramble make any sence...i dont know....
all i know is that when i feel that little tingle in the back of my mind and see the shadows omve out the corner of my eye it usually cause there is something present that cannt be seen in a normal fashion

Those with a high IQ have always tended to walk around "with their head in the clouds", to borrow the coloquialism. Their brains do indeed work so fast that they are barely able to work within the normal bounds of physicality (Einstein failed high school mathematics), so the paranormal (that beyond the normal) becomes the normal to them.

On the flipside of the coin, those with a lower IQ may be more connected to the spirit realm than the physical, thus their mental faculties are impaired by their lack of connection to this reality.

I do have to agree with Alastordarc there above me. Those with lower IQ's may be more "in tune" as it were with the spirit realm because they may be easier to commune with, and more willing to believe (IMO). Those with higher IQ's also may hear voices or see things becasue they also are more willing to believe, and/or "have their head in the clouds."

Okay, I'm not saying by any means that ONLY those with a high or low IQ have the gift, but that they may be more accepting, or more readily receptive to the gift. Any body can see or hear the paranormal, it just may be the case that it presents itself to certain people more readily.

I don't doubt that an extremely scientific mind is largely incapable of accepting anything paranormal at face value. This is perhaps a hindrance when the phenomenon in question is truly inexplicable. So in that sense, the skeptic may have a harder time finding something truly paranormal/metaphysical. On the other hand, I have always felt that the occurences of paranormal events are so very rare that most phenomenon deserves that rational explanation as the answer and that it is those without enough training or rational maturity, that will mistake these many mundane events as paranormal.

It likely takes that unique individual who possesses enough mental maturity to be skeptical of the many overstated claims but enough creative thinking to recognize the metaphysical when he/she sees it.

Personaly I'd have to say I think that IQ has nothing to do with any kind of paranormal abilities. I propose that it's a matter of innocence. I believe children are connected with the paranormal simply because they have innocent hearts and will not question what they see. I can see, though, how one could relate weither the person questions what they see to IQ. But one must understand that an adult, with lower IQ may not have that connection that a child might.

I think as one becomes more intuned to this world that one separtes from the other. If one was to stay in tune with the other, than as they'd grow older, they'd retain that ability they had in their childhood.

I probably don't make any sense...

It seems easy to believe that children and adults with lower IQ's would be more open to the paranormal as their imaginations know no restrictions. I find it a little less plausible that people with high IQ's are the same because they seem to me to be more analytical and less open-minded.

I've once looked into this topic many years ago myself, as well. What I found at the time was that it seemed to be true that those who had a higher IQ did tend to possess more likelihood to be open to the paranormal.

First off, let me clear up a common misconception about IQ. Many come come to believe that IQ is a measure of intelligence. This is NOT true. IQ is a measure of your ability to think or how well your brain works. Actual intelligence cannot be measured except on extremely intense tests asking a myriad of questions. :)

There has been a similar study done several years ago on IQ vs Believe in God or Supernatural. I cannot find the link that that, but I have found a link to a similar study. [Link will open in a new window.] In this study they show conclusive proof that it is more than likely that the higher IQ one has, the less likely they are to believe in supernatural things.

This only supports what I believe, in that the less you know, the more likely you're to believe in things which normally have a logical and rational explanation.

Mind you, there are things I have experienced which cannot be explained by logic nor ration. It is THIS fact in our existence which compels me to seek out and learn all about this 'other side' of life.

It would seem logical to presume that if one has a super-high IQ, that they could somehow figure out how to tap into hidden abilities in our own being and begin to use them for their needs. Such as telekinesis or telepathy or even energy manipulation [which leads to psy-vamps, but that's another thread topic].

I have an IQ of 185 but I am also moderately autistic. I have Asperger's Syndrome. I can sense spirits and I can tell if they're good or bad. If I sense a good or neutral entity, I feel warm and sort of tingle. It feels like putting on a cotton sweater which has just come out of the dryer. When I sense something that wishes to frighten or harm, I feel as if something has started crushing my stomach. Also, for some reason, my spiritual energy or aura is a little different. It's kind of off balance. Because of this, I seem to be impervious to possession. I was attacked by a powerful demon as a child who is well known to seek possession. My case is rare so I'm not sure whether IQ has a vital role in this. I can't think of any reason it should.

Given that the average person only uses 10 % of his or her brain I believe that if those with higher IQ's are some how tapping into the other 90 % then yes there is a connection. Who knows what the human race could do if we had complete control of our brains. Talk to people from beyond, sure I believe so.

According to Gardner, there are eight different intelligences. IQ tests only measure one type of intelligence. I submit that the person that has paranormal abilities has to have a high intelligence because they are using more of their brain. However, the intelligence that is high may not be the one that is measured. So by this, it could appear that the person is less intelligent because they have a low IQ score, but they really have high intelligence in one of the other 7 intelligences so they are able to use paranormal abilities.

I am kind of iffy on this one as I do believe that IQ is a factor, as was already mentioned, that those with a higher IQ seem to be able to tap into the 90% of brain not being used, but on the other hand small children have paranormal abilities I believe because they don't know it isn't possible they just do it until they get old enough for peoples disbelief to choke off abilities. Hope that made some kind of sense.

High/low IQ does not dictate if a person has paranormal abilities. I believe children who are stupid as hell can see things that albert einstein could never phathom. Even if someone has down syndrome, actually especially if someone has down syndrome. You need to see some of the talents those kids have. Sure than cant speak a proper sentence in english, but their other abilities SKYROCKET. I think there is something paranormal about that.

Not to say someone with a high IQ couldnt have paranormal abilities (i.e. have a sight to see auras, channel ki in healing/destructive ways, feel chackras) Im just saying there is no link between IQ and a persons other-wordly talents

I haven't noticed a link directly relating a person's IQ with the paranormal. I know some people with above average intelligence, some with below average intelligence, and some that would fall in the "normal" range. I would say that the paranormal affects about the same percentage of each group.

i dont know about that. children tend to have these abilities simply because they have not been taught that they are not supposed to see that or that it is all their imagination. children have not been taught to close their mind off to possibilities like adults have. but then again maybe those with lower IQ's have the ability because they have the minds of a child. hard to say for sure

I believe there is a possibilitie that someone with a lower IQ or with born with a mental disorder will use other area's of the brain that those with a higher intellect tend to neglect through logical thinking.

Mind you there have been some with rather high IQ's who have had strong psychic abilities, so again maybe they learnt to use other areas of the brain that we don't normally access.

I think logic and reasoning in us 'norms' is what holds us back from being stronger as psychics. Those with rather high or very low IQ's maybe tend to by pass logic and are more open and receptive.

I think it is very possible that people with a higher IQ are able to access more of their brain then the normal person so may be more open to the paranormal or be able to access more parts that are linked to telepathy and other things considered paranormal. As well I think that the lower IQ does make that type of person more able to accept that there are paranormal things out there because they don't see it as being so much different then the normal world and have not learned to block that which they don't understand. Most people who are considered normal are raised to believe that there is no such things as ghosts and that ESP and other things like that are not real so their brains will not allow them to see these things. People with the lower or higher IQ can look at it from different perspectives and get over some of the 'brain washing' that society places on the normal populace.

While I hesitate to bring it up yet again, the 10% brain usage is a myth. CAT scans show that we do in fact use ALL of our brain. However, if we're talking about HOW we use our brain, then I think there are plenty of people who only use 10% or less of their analytical, creative, and emotional acuity or skills.

It's interesting that many on here have said that children and those with a low IQ have more access to their imagination and that this would help as oppose to mislead them. It seems to me that if one has a low ability to learn and analyze, but a highly active imagination, they're more likely to believe everything is paranormal even when it's not. I don't see how that would help discover truly paranormal phenomenon.

I also think that one has to establish the paranormal as something that happens outside our experience of it. In other words, to believe in a ghost or not doesn't change the reality of whether or not they exist. So having a paranormal experience wouldn't depend on whether or not you believe in the experience as paranormal.
