Does anyone know any superstitions against animals? As in...anything animals can do to receive some form of bad luck?

I guess that would fit here too. Do share with us, 2007skittles..

There’s, of course, the old ‘if a black cat walks across your path’ superstition that foretells bad luck. One that I am familiar with is that of the white owl, which foretells death (in the family).

A few trucker friends of mine have one about seing a black dog ( no its not just a movie) . They say if you se a black dog running beside your car that you are going to be in a really bad crash

alot of people believe if a black cat is to cross ur path you will have bad luck, but i find it is the opposite lol

I know some people believe that black cats are bad luck but i think it's a stupid superstition they don't cause all the stuff people are so leery of. If they did i would be dead a million times over by now because i have one.
The black dog one yes i have heard that one too my cousin used to drive 18 wheelers cross country and one driver he knew swore he saw the black dog once so that one i do think has some merit.

peacocks, those beautiful birds there tail feathers the eyes, they say if you have those in your house they are awful bad luck

Went to look for this book my aunt gave me for Xmas. It tells in it that in United Kingdom black cats are considered lucky while Canada and Japan consider tricoloured cats luckier.
One i used to hear from my grandma years ago was if a dog eats grass it brings rain i think you wanted them against animals but this one is connected with animals.

are you looking for superstitions about animals or ones FOR animals to bring the animals bad luck?

only ones i know of is the black cat crossing your path is bad luck and if a lady bug lands on you its good luck.

The original topic was superstitions for animals that bring them bad luck, but I guess it turned into animal superstitions for human bad luck.

ahh well i have not ever heard of any superstitions that bring animals bad luck. do you know any? i dont remember if you posted any or not

There is that one cat at a nursing home that predicts peoples deaths

I couldn't find anything about any superstitions that bring the animal itself bad luck.

But on the other topic I have heard that if a bird poo's (for lack of a better word) on your car or head its good luck. Personally I would be pissed.......but whatever lol

like pandorasbx i couldn't find anything suggesting that animals themselves can have luck of any kind
BUT it's a very intriguing idea and i'm going to look around some more

i'll be watching this thread to see if anyone else finds anything as well

Vampirikia i honestly have not seen anything like you are meaning really but i wish i could find something along those lines as i think that would be interesting to read up on. i figure all the people belieiving that stuff about black cats will bring the black cat bad luck which is sad. if you ever do come up with somewhere that does have the info you seek please let me know i would be most appreciative.

well i for one am waiting to see if anyone comes up with any, i mean if they have them for us why not for animals as well? its a possibility at least.

This is one superstition that i picked up from a friend of mine.....He tells me that in some cases, cats can be sensitive to the realm of the dead, and that they can be used as a way to see into that world

The only 'sea' superstition involving animals is the albertross. Sailors of old believed that if an albertross flew behind the ship that the ship was going to meet with disaster.

Crows in some countries are harbringers of death, or soul carriers, same with flocks of sparrows.

Overall..so little is known about the sea and many of the discovered things in it, not to mention all that's undiscovered..

well of course everyone knows about the black cat. they're suppose to bring bad luck. However I always have more luck after seeing one. I guess it's the opposite for me.

It does not specify any particular kind. So I would guess that means ant cat.

Good question... in my experience when a death is about to happen the cat leaves the house.

As for sea animals ..sharks following a ship signifies death...while dolphins are seen as good luck. If the dolphins head north expect good weather, however, if they head south expect a storm

I suppose theirs would be the same as ours. If a bird flies into a glass window someone inside is supposed to die. It can be anyone in the house~ human or other~ it's still a someone.

There is one..something about a crows caw calling for someones death, or something like that I remember hearing referance to a lot still. The black cat crossing your path of course...and several others I can't think of right now....>.

In the middle ages it was believed that witches could tranform themselves in to cats. The thought a black cat could be a witch in disguise and hence the superstition.

throughout the years there have been many animal superstitions.i only wish i had the links to put in here.

To talk about the original topic of this post I have done some research in trying to find something on animal's who are affected by superstition and not humans.So far it seems that animals do not really have any based on themselves from what I can find.Perhaps their perceptive abilities is enough to keep them from such travesties, I mean after all for those who believe in animal totems our totem guides tend to try and warn us of danger.

I saw a few post about the black cat but non of the Raven or Crow..

I have heard two on this
First it the Crow/ Raven / Black bird is seen before death comes he ushers it in and takes your soul away to the river sticks.

the second one is that the Crow / Raven/ Black bird carrys the souls of those who can not rest in piece back to the plain of the living so they can finish what even has been left out of place.

I believe my cat (no shes not black shes persion)has crappy luck she constantly steps on things and has bandaids on her mitts at any given time she is an indoor cat -doesn't matter if the vacuum missed it she'll find it also she runs into things hardcore last vet visit her eyes and everything else is in perfect health she got stuck in the couch walked to close to a candle and caught her tail on fire I think thats about it but isn't that enough has to the why and where it came from I would love to know so I could do a banishing for her hey I should just do that anyway g2g

I have heard of the raven and the crow as being bad luck. I know for my self seeing a fox is always good luck for me.

When I was growing up, we were told that if a bird (any bird) flew into the glass pane of a window, that soon someone in that house would die.

I have heard that if an owl hoots outside your window at night that it foretells a death of some one close to you. The links were pretty informative as well.

There is one superstition that if a shark followed in the wake of a ship that someone on board would die and that the shark was just waiting for it's meal to be consigned to it's watery grave.

Manta rays or devil fish were also feared because sailors believed that they could attach themselves to the anchor and drag the ship down to Davy Jones's locker.

As per the original topic of superstitions that bring animals good or bad luck.. I guess their haven't been too many animals writing about their superstitions..

I'm not sure if it's a widly accepted superstition, but I was always told that if a bird enters your house, it means that someone in the house is going to die.

I like this thread. I don't know of any that hadn't been mentioned, but it's good to learn new things.

I too have only heard of blk cats being of bad luck

the black cat of course...one girl mentioned a bird in the house, my grandmother always told me that means that there is going to be alot of havoc in your life.

I know about the black cat one and the dog thing I didn't know about the car, but I knew if you saw one and it was just watching some believed it was a bad omen.

Plus I have a black cat her name is Nightmare and I still have good luck so I do not believe the black cat one.

I've heard a couple concerning horses...

they're not really bad luck, more just behavioral patterns of horse saying that it can tell you when something bad is going to happen to you. I think that's all the superstitions are. It's not the animals that cause it to happen to you. They're trying to warn you of something bad happening so you don't get hurt....

legends have said in many cases around the world that multicolroed cat are considered to be money cat and will bring you good luck and in fact that black cats bring badluck but i have had many cats in my life and plenty of them to be black and they all brought me goodluck and it was the one white cat we had that only gave us bad vibes at night it also has been said that if a cat of any gender sleeps near your face they will try to steal your souls while you sleep so i really can't say if black cat are bad luck but i can say not in my life anyway.....

Wow... Several things I can talk about here. :D

First, there was a post about a cat stealing your soul if it slept near your face. I think this might stem from the fact that a cat in your face might feel suffocating. Actually, haven't there been cases of babies dying like that? Hmmm... Something to look up, huh? ;)

Another thing I'd like to share is folklore regarding horses and vampires. They used to take a horse through a graveyard to find the grave of a vampire. If a horse became nervous, huffing and neighing and stomping, at a particular grave, they would dig up that grave and then do whatever it was they did to "vampires." You know, like garlic in the mouth, beheading, stake in the heart, etc.

One animal superstition that I'd like to share (I have a TON) is that if a bird flies in your house it's supposed to foretell a death in the family.

Snakes are supposed to represent the devil/ sin. I know a lot of people who won't even go near them in fear the devil will work his evil magicks.

The legend about saint patrick that forced all the snakes from Ireland has another meaning too. The Snakes are supposed to be witches. So the story is just a metaphor for St. Patrick to have eliminated all the pagans in Ireland.

I don't know of any not already mentioned.

The black cat thing is one that most people have heard of.

Although I find them to be good luck.

When you see a one-eyed cat, spit on your thumb, stamp it in the palm of your hand, and make a wish. The wish will come true.

dont walk infront of a black cat for that bad luck i hear. but i think that one is wrong.

Bird droppings are another superstition. If a dropping falls on you, it is meant to bring you good luck. So..lets all go and visit an aviary!

Some people believe that if a black cat crosses your path, then it will bring you bad luck. Also, some say that if you lick a frog... *yuck* that you could turn into some sort of demonic creature or a witch of some sorts. Neither of these I believe to be true. Again it's a "superstition" nothing that has been proven as fact.

i think animals have that 6th since that something is going on that we dont know about so yeah they do have that ability but i dont think that they have bad luck though because having bad luck is only in your mind because lifes what you make it and if you think everything goes wrong when your around then things are going to go wrong so no animals dont have bad luck

I've heard that if a bird gets trapped in your house someone is going to die.

Being from the South, we are of course STEEPED in superstition to one degree or the other.

I was always told not to look a crow in the eye, as it will steal your soul.

A cat with only one eye is how the Devil takes form to walk amongst us to cause trouble.

And my stepmother (when I was pregnant with my son in 2000) told me I HAD to get rid of our two cats, because the cat would steal the breath from the baby and kill him...Suffice it to say we did NOT get rid of the cats, and Connor has been around them since day one with no trouble. My persian, Chelsea, often would curl up on my belly when I was 7-9 months along and sit on top of the baby and purr...

i know many of my Italian friends say that birds are bad luck. They would never have birds in their house when they were growing up. I think it's an old wife's tale personally. However birds were used in mines to detect fumes. So these tales may be based on fact somewhat if birds are sensitive to air quanlity.

Bird on your window still brings death.

There is one if you see and eagle it's good luck.
If you see a bunch of valtures or something like that circling then it's a omen of death.

i have no superstition just what i hear.. and the black cat and when you drive to long you may see the dog.... cause if i seen some dog in my view id have to pull over

gypsies would always have cats since they said ghosts were scared of them. All animals can supposedly sense ghosts, but cats are the only ones who can actually see them, so the ghosts get scared
